It’s been a most exciting start to the year here at Engine House Media and we are delighted to bring you the first issue of Devon Living. Interior designer Gillian Coates of Roomshadows uses her scrapbook of ideas collected from around the world to bring expression to our homes.

nterior designer Gillian Coates is an avid believer that the interior of our homes is vitally important to our wellbeing. “Home is where our creative heart is,” Gillian tells us. “It needs to feel special and loved, and to incorporate the characters of the people that occupy it.” As soon as her studies finished, Gillian hopped onto a sailing yacht bound for warmer climes, beginning a 15-year love affair with sailing, which took her around the world. “Whenever I was ashore, I collated a mental scrapbook of interesting and innovative architectural and interior design ideas. It was my passion to collect objects, textiles and scraps of decorating materials – as many as could be stowed on a small sailing vessel!” When dry land finally beckoned, Gillian lived in France for 20 years, nurturing her love for renovating and decorating houses. estled in the countryside, half a mile from one of the finest beaches in south Devon is the village of Slapton, itself an ancient settlement mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The Jewel in Slapton’s crown is the church of St James, established in the late 13th Century. It will come as no surprise therefore that among Slapton’s eclectic inhabitants is a business dedicated to the restoration of fine antiquities, in this case, violins. Paul Parsons, a violin restorer and dealer, and his wife Charlotte, relocated home and their business DE Vernon Violins to south Devon, giving up the frenetic lifestyle of Manchester’s city centre for a slower pace by the coast. “Giving up the mantle of the north west’s oldest violin dealership was an easy decision,” Paul tells us. “After 35 years of dealing with many of the area’s finest musicians and their fine instruments and bows, moving to Slapton is allowing me to continue to refine my work and indeed choose the work I really want to do, without commercial pressures.” Paul started work with the company in 1983, established by D E Vernon himself, back in 1964. Paul trained in repair and restoration techniques, then in a hugely busy commercial workshop environment and progressing such as to take over the company in 1989. “I’ve spent a 35 year career looking after fine instruments that are not only an investment

for the musician but in many cases are making a serious financial investment,” continues Paul. The laws of supply and demand have throughout violin history pushed prices upwards with many fine and especially old Italian instruments out of the reach of fine musicians. Paul has over recent years found and supplied fine instruments for a number of clients who specifically want investment quality items. Some investors loan instruments to aspiring young and talented musicians either directly or through specialist music teaching institutions, many of which themselves own fine collections. It would be fair to say that you do not have to be a musician to enjoy fine antique instruments. Slapton has an appeal of its own to the clients who visit the workshop and home of Paul and Charlotte Parsons to discuss restorations or buying fine instruments. aunched by Harry Roberts, My Favourite Cottages ﬁrst began when he decided to buy a Devon farmhouse and convert its old barn into a holiday home. Having discovered a slightly different way of marketing his own let, Harry later left his well-paid job in pursuit of his own enterprise. Everything he experienced with his own barn conversion continues to be relevant today. Whilst My Favourite Cottages is ostensibly a marketing business, for Harry, product is key, as he remembers from his early training in advertising. In particular, he values McCarthy’s ‘Four P’s’ – Price, Product, Place and Promotion – the most. Harry ﬁrstly explains how he adopts the ‘product’ side of this approach. “It’s essential, whether you’re starting from scratch or already have a holiday cottage, to know whether your product matches what the market is looking for. Are you up to date with this market? Put simply, being up to date with today’s market means contemporary kitchens, modern bathrooms, and as much added value as you can afford, including WiFi, games consoles, hot tubs, and so on.” He also discusses location, which is still “one of the most important factors in successfully renting a holiday cottage. Cottages by the sea obviously attract more interest, but everyone is looking for

s I head deeper into the heart of Dartmoor on my very ﬁrst assignment for Devon Living, I’m excited – if not a just little nervous – at the prospect of meeting my subject, on his home turf. Spring lambs bounce by the roadside, as rock tors rise ominously in my periphery. Taking a moment to absorb the surroundings, I descend the Moor into the village below, passing over a little stone bridge, snaking through a narrow country lane before arriving at my destination; a small farmstead of several cottages and barns. My host’s cottage occupies a tranquil spot in the Devon countryside, with sweeping views of rolling hills dotted with sheep and wild ponies. The subject in question is Carnegie Medal winning author Philip Reeve, who has won the acclaim of both critics and readers with his colourful, richly imagined stories, beloved of the young adult audience. His critically lauded masterpiece, Mortal Engines, is currently receiving the Hollywood blockbuster treatment by Universal Studios – due for cinematic release this Christmas. An author operating at the height of his powers, the ﬁrst in his latest trilogy, Railhead, has been shortlisted for another Carnegie Medal. But even had I expected an ego to match the success, I needn’t have worried; Philip is welcoming, affable and frequently selfeffacing, chatting easily over a cup of tea.

Philip lives here on the Moor with his wife, Sarah, and their teenage son, Sam. Today, however, he is accompanied by their poodle, Frodo, who jealously guards the sofa I sit on, eyeing up the digestives conspiratorially. A gentle humour and mischievous touch run throughout his work. Seemingly his only limitation is his imagination, which just happens to be as vast and vivid as the worlds his characters inhabit. But Philip’s literary career actually began as a freelance illustrator, working on the popular Horrible Histories series, “knocking out 10 or 15 of them every year” throughout the 1990s. Working to a strict brief, there was little opportunity to exercise his fertile imagination. So, in his spare time he put pen to paper, eventually shaping his ﬁrst proper novel, Mortal Engines. “It started out as a bit of a hobby really, which writing has always been to me, like having a train set to tinker with on days off... when you can’t get to sleep at night, thinking up storylines and characters. There was never any moment where I thought, ‘I want to be a writer’; it was just something I was doing. Luckily, it sold well enough that the publisher wanted more.” Like his hero, Tolkien, Philip has that rare knack for creating his own unique universe, fully-formed and entirely authentic in every

detail, then furnishing it with interesting and flawed, three-dimensional characters; at once otherworldly yet familiar, futuristic yet grounded within our own reality. He often spends as much time mulling over his characters and their world as he does actually writing, as the journey takes shape in his head. “I’m always thinking visually, but I think writing is much more filmic than illustrative; it’s much more akin to making a movie in your head than painting a picture...” It’s pertinent, then that just a week later, Philip will visit the New Zealand filmset where legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson and director Christian Rivers are adapting Mortal Engines for the big screen. If anyone can bring Philip’s complex world to life, it’s the multi Oscarwinning crew behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy who did what many said was impossible. You sense Philip’s genuine excitement and anticipation of the results.

The Moor While Philip originally hails from Brighton, his adopted home holds a magnetic draw over him. “I’ve always liked Dartmoor since I was a child... I remember going to Hound Tor when I was about eight or nine with my parents, and

thinking it was the most amazing place I’d ever seen. I loved Dartmoor instantly. Then in my teens I discovered the illustrator Brian Froud’s work, which at the time was very much infused with the spirit of the Moor, reinforcing the notion of Dartmoor in my mind, and giving me the idea that I wanted to be an illustrator.” With art college beckoning, followed by a burgeoning illustration career, Dartmoor slipped to the back of Philip’s mind. But its draw would prove compelling, and after several holidays staying nearby, Philip and Sarah eventually made the permanent move. “I was a full time freelance illustrator by then so I could pretty much live wherever I wanted... so I wanted to live in the middle of Dartmoor!” In fact, as Philip quips, the guesthouse’s owners have complained they keep losing business as all their returning guests love it so much, they end up simply moving down and becoming neighbours! I can certainly see the appeal of it myself. “It’s a nice place to work because I can go out and walk, and think.” Yet for someone who has made his name largely for sculpting futuristic landscapes, at ﬁrst this feels at odds with Dartmoor’s rugged semi-wilderness. Look closer, however, and you’ll see how it has

seeped into his work, whether the borrowing of geographic names (lead character, Tom Natsworthy in Mortal Engines) or even the landscape itself, as Philip recounted upon the release of Railhead. “A few years ago, on my wife’s birthday, we went to Lydford Gorge, on the far side of Dartmoor. It’s a place about as unlike a futuristic industrial city as you could imagine. The River Lyd ﬂows through the deep gorge. There is a famous waterfall called The White Lady, and a beautiful, mossy path leading up through the oak woods, beside the rapids. There’s also a spot called Devil’s Cauldron where the river plunges down into a deep chasm. Some previous landowner bolted metal walkways to the rock-faces so that sightseers could venture closer. The walkways are rusted now and maybe unsafe... But looking at them from the higher path made me think about a whole city built in that way, jutting from vertical cliff faces, half drowned in waterfall spray. Ideas lie in wait for us in the landscape, and they’re not always the ideas that we expect.” And there are more immediate inﬂuences too, such as The Dartmoor Pegasus, a recent instalment from his Reeve and McIntyre

collaborative series for early readers. It’s interesting to note how many significant connections in Philip’s life have gone full circle, many of these deeply rooted in the geography of Dartmoor. The other great connection, of course, is his literary influence – growing up on a diet of Tolkien, then years later having his own book adapted for the screen by the very same filmmaker who so successfully adapted Tolkien. Yet for all these connections, Philip is ever keen to push things forward, refusing to be conveniently categorised into one genre or audience, never one to go stale as a writer. “If you’re going to keep a career going for a long time,” he muses, “it is vitally important that you change every so often and do something different... you have to keep pulling the rug out from under your feet.”

MANORS We catch up with the inspiring chef, hotelier and philanthropist, Michael Caines MBE, to hear more about his plans for Lympstone Manor. WORDS BY FELIX ROWE

ichael Caines is the ultimate success story, overcoming adversity to achieve greatness, including an MBE for his culinary and philanthropic endeavours. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fiercely passionate about the landscape he calls home and the great produce it offers. Having attained and retained two Michelin stars as head chef at Dartmoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gidleigh Park for 18 years, he has since picked up his first Michelin star at his new venture Lympstone Manor,

on the Exe estuary, within the first six months of opening. So, naturally, we were delighted to get the opportunity to catch up with Michael to discover more about the man behind the accolades. Michael fondly reminisces over childhood, one of six children growing up in Devon, enjoying trips to the beach and days out in the countryside. While his love for cooking would come later, he recalls a fulfilling childhood, one that instilled an appreciation of local produce and homecooked food.

As a young chef, he moved to London and certain figures emerged who would go on to influence him and greatly garner his respect. “Raymond Blanc was incredibly inspirational, as a young man,” explains Michael, “motivating me to work for the best, and ultimately to become the best. The Roux brothers, too – I would walk past Le Gavroche everyday, so it was great to go on to work with my heroes. “They are all very different chefs, in terms of style and presentation, but they all put great ingredients and expert technique at the heart of what they do… respecting the produce and seasonality. Great ingredients and technique result in great flavour.” So, how would Michael describe his style of cooking? “I’m classically trained, but not classical in approach… I don’t like to pigeonhole myself. I just try to cook great food in a modern European style. Composition is very important. It’s important to give people an interesting experience, both in presentation and flavour of the food, but also the setting itself.” Michael’s latest undertaking, Lympstone Manor on the outskirts of Exmouth, is a case in point. “After 21 years at Gidleigh Park, I

needed to do something new and forge my own future. If you’re going to do something, you’ve got to act on it. Someone once said to me: ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. As a chef, Michael is a renowned perfectionist, selecting only the finest ingredients, then combining and presenting them with precision to create an experience for all the senses. These traits also apply to Michael the hotelier, with no expense spared to create the perfect ambiance for guests to enjoy, from the bespoke copper bar, well stocked with a carefully curated array of spirits, to the plush seating to sink into once drink is in hand. And then, of course, there’s the food itself. With an evolving seasonal menu that gets the tastebuds salivating, Michael is understandably reluctant to name his favourite dish. “That’s like asking someone to choose between their children!” he laughs. His menu reads like a roll call of some of the South West’s finest ingredients, from Darts Farm beef to River Exe mussels. Michael’s passion and determination are infectious – and show no signs of slowing down. Surely, anyone who has been awarded an MBE and multiple Michelin stars over his career has earned the right to kick back and

put their feet up. But never one to rest on his laurels or dwell on former glories, Michael is nothing if not ambitious. “What happens next is what really matters to me.” Michael’s long-term plan is to plant a vineyard in the grounds and produce his own sparkling wine in the Champagne style. As an amputee and an adopted child, Michael’s unique experiences have helped to shape his outlook on life, and he gets heavily involved in charitable and community enterprises. He set up the Michael Caines Academy in 2011 in association with his former alma mater, Exeter College, to nurture and inspire the next generation of chefs; he also participates in countless philanthropic activities with various charities. He speaks passionately about his endeavours, though in a refreshingly modest and understated way. Simply put, he just feels fortunate to be in a position where he can share his experiences and make a difference. “You have a responsibility if you are successful to give something back to society and my profile as a chef allows me to do that,” he says. “Hopefully my story will

inspire others to fulfil their dreams.” Michael’s other great passion is Formula One motorsport, as highlighted by his active role in hospitality for the Williams racing team. “I’ve always loved the sport,” he says, drawing parallels between motorsport and life as a worldclass chef. “It’s very glamorous and very precise, but requires great skill and drive too; performers at the top of their game, operating in a high-pressure environment.” While deeply passionate about Lympstone Manor, Michael is equally magnanimous towards his peers across the South West – sure there’s competition, but there’s camaraderie too and the belief that supporting each other is good for all. We’re eager to discover where Devon’s most accomplished chef chooses to eat out. Michael recites a huge list of names – too many to mention – from The Salutation Inn in Topsham to The Masons Arms in Knowstone, and The Elephant in Torquay. The Dartmoor Inn, Lydford, he says, is a Sunday lunch favourite. And Michael is equally passionate about

the great outdoors. “I do a lot of running, on the beach. I love Dartmoor and Exmoor too – it’s contrasting, but equally beautiful.” Indeed, despite having worked in some of the top restaurants in London and France, his eventual return to his home county was inevitable. “There’s no bigger ambassador for Devon than me! There’s so much beauty and a diverse landscape to explore… the tors, countryside, the beaches – they are all part of Devon’s rich tapestry. aunched in September 2015 under the banner ‘The Spirit of Exmoor,’ Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is a premium craft gin made from 11 botanicals, distilled and blended on the banks of the picturesque river Lyn in north Devon. Passionate about all things gin, husband and wife team Pat Patel and Julie Heap are the faces behind this exciting venture. Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin features complex layers of citrus and pepper notes finely balanced with the distinct flavours of juniper and coriander, resulting in a mature, premium spirit. Hibiscus, cardamom and kaffir lime leaves have been artfully blended with these traditional aromatics, creating a full-flavoured, smooth gin. Pot distilled in a copper alembic still, Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is lovingly blended, filtered, bottled and labelled by hand in exclusive 100-litre batches. Currently, Wicked Wolf produces a minimum of two batches a week, but there are plans, according to Julie, to expand towards the end of the year. On the process of making the gin, Julie tells us: “Each aromatic is prepared by hand, infused and distilled separately resulting in 11 individual distillates, which are then skilfully blended. This approach allows us complete control over the strength of each flavour, and enables consistency from batch to batch. The gin is filtered at each stage of the production

In the past, these have been Silver Bullet, at 57% ABV, and another called Full Moon. Julie excitedly tells us that a limited edition gin in partnership with Exmoor Ales is currently being created, “so watch this space!”

s somebody who’s always appreciated the calm and quietude of life in the countryside, I never thought I’d find myself craving a city break. And yet, as my partner Jess and I merged onto the A30 and set our course for Exeter, it was with a great deal of excitement that I dipped the car window, let the air roar through the gap and settled into the open road. In the city, where you’d expect to find the very essence of modernity and technology, strangely, you get to go back to basics – to a time when shopping was more than just a one-click affair, where you return home the following afternoon

to find your items magically stowed in the shed. With this exciting prospect in mind, after arriving and checking in, we immediately hit the high street, noses out in search of that unmistakable smell of unspoiled fabric, shoe leather, and things we didn’t know existed but would soon seem vital to our very way of life. The excitement! The problem was that no matter how desperately my wardrobe was in need of updating, our breakfast had been woefully small and we were soon forced to accept that our evening meal could no longer wait that long. So, when Jess called a French brasserie just around the corner, it was with great relief that I heard her say, “4pm works for us, we’ll see you then.” One of many across the UK, Côte Brasserie in Exeter is a must for anyone looking to enjoy French-inspired dining in a calm yet atmospheric environment, one that gently encourages you to relax and take your time. Next to the front window, our table was ideal, affording us uninterrupted views of Exeter’s cathedral from where we sat. From the off, the service was warm and welcoming, even though we’d arrived 20 minutes early. Our table was immediately set up and before we knew it, we had chilled and distilled water on hand and ‘proper’ drinks on the way – a French beer called Meteor for me, a large glass of Sauvignon for Jess. For anyone who’s been to a Côte restaurant before, you’ll know that choosing what to eat is no mean feat. This isn’t due to a lack of interesting choice – quite the opposite, in fact! Eventually I settled to start with the crab mayonnaise, served with avocado, cucumber, capers and tarragon with toasted sour dough bread, while Jess began with the charcuterie board, which included smoked duck breast, Saucisson Sec, duck rillettes and Jambon de Savoie, served with baby gem salad and chargrilled French sour dough toast, and before I could pronounce ‘Saucisson’, they had arrived. Given our level of hunger you can

imagine the voracity with which we tucked in and it wasn’t long before our first round of plates was being cleared away. Next up, for me at least, was the Breton fish stew, a masterfully prepared bowlful made with seabass, mussels, clams, prawns and squid, all brought together with a blend of tomato, white wine and chilli. Jess had opted for the lamb rump. You’ll have to excuse the lack of detail on this one – so focussed was I on the masterpiece set before me that I failed to take any notice! After concluding the main course, Jess eagerly reminded me that, being a French restaurant, crème brulee was probably on the menu. She had a point and, as you’ve likely guessed already, it wasn’t long before we were tucking into our final course – me a rich fondant with vanilla pod ice cream, Jess a perfectly cracked crème brulee. So, how to summarise? The food was exceptional and the atmosphere, rather than being electric or subdued, reached a comfortable balance between the two. The service was warm and knowledgeable, and the staff couldn’t do enough to make us comfortable. The best part, however, is that all of this can be found just moments from the retail mecca that is Exeter’s high street, so if you’re thinking of planning your own Exeter city break, Côte Brasserie, Exeter comes highly recommended.

SEASONAL, SENSATIONAL We catch up with Donna and Paul Berry, owners of The Swan in Bampton, and find out more about their incredible string of success.

n AA Four Star Gold classic English country inn and the oldest pub in Bampton, The Swan offers the ﬁnest dishes using local, seasonal ingredients, all seasoned with top-notch customer service. Among its many awards, the pub has two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence and, in both 2017 and this year, was named as an Estrella Damn top 50 Gastropub! Husband and wife team Paul and Donna Berry have been working in hospitality for more than 11 years in the heart of Devon, and both are talented, award-winning, industry–acclaimed chefs, having gained a reputation for creating some of the region’s tastiest dishes, while serving up the warmest of welcomes. Donna has always been passionate about good food and often used to dream about owning and running her own pub, so she pestered Paul to do it. They started out at The Quarryman’s Rest, but took on The Swan in 2011. Since, they haven’t once looked back! “I’m really lucky to be able to do the thing I love as a job, and on my days off you’ll still

ﬁnd me in the kitchen. I can’t get enough of it! We close for food on Mondays, which allows us to recharge our batteries, but on these days I still spend my time inventing new dishes.” Donna’s big love is seafood and she tells us: “I get very, very excited when we get something different from our ﬁsh suppliers. I’m a bit like a kid in a candy shop when the delivery van doors open!” In January this year, the pub was named, for the second year running, as one of the country’s top 50 gastropubs at an industrywide awards ceremony in York. “We polled 28 this year and received a special award as the highest climber in the list, as in 2017 we were positioned just inside the top 50.” So, if you fancy sampling what one of the UK’s top 50 gastropubs has to offer, be sure to book a table at The Swan!

We speak to Murray from The Fresh Coffee Company about his family and business’ move to Devon.

urray tells us: “My wife and I, and our one-year old daughter Madi moved to Exeter from Surrery last September, bringing the business with us. The Fresh Coffee Company has been in operation in London and Surrey since 2014, steadily building a reputation for providing quality coffee and service to its customer base, including businesses from local delicatessens to national chains and all sorts in between.” “It all began when my business partner Marcel was working for Harrods, who would only serve Bristot coffee. His passion for coffee and the quality that Bristot delivered created an opportunity and he became the UK distributor for the Italian company, creating The Fresh Coffee Company in order to do so. Bristot are what we describe as a ‘boutique’ roaster, roasting to order so that everything is nice and fresh. They’ve been at it since 1919, so have an incredible network with the farms across central and South America, as well as India and Africa. They know a thing or two about selecting the right beans to keep the quality and ﬂavour consistent. They’re part of the Sustainable Agriculture Network, and are acutely aware of the importance of the environment from which the beans are sourced. Ethical and traceable production is at the heart of their business.” The next piece of the puzzle, Murray tells us, is teaming up with SUNDAY-Collab – the creation of two surfers based in Hossegor, south west France. SUNDAY is a lifestyle brand with coffee at its core; the ‘Collab’ is the collaboration between likeminded people

who enjoy the surf, beach and art vibes of Hossegor. The coffee is roasted on their behalf at Bristot, using premium grade, rainforest alliance certiﬁed beans, boasting a beautifully smooth, rounded taste with no bitterness. xeter is a city that’s steeped in history. Situated on the river Exe, and the most south-westerly fortified Roman settlement on mainland Britain, the Devon city grew with the rise of the wool trade into the vibrant city and county town that it is today. There’s plenty to see and do, from soaking up the vast array of culture such as the castle ruin and medieval cathedral, to partaking in some retail therapy among the many shopping opportunities. There’s a wonderful juxtaposition of big name brands and quirky independent stores and modern buildings standing shoulder-to-shoulder with medieval structures overhanging the streets below, with narrow cobbled lanes revealing hidden treasures around every corner. You’ll find all the major high street brands you’d expect from a city (over 70 in fact) at Princesshay Shopping Centre, including an Apple Store, Cath Kidston, Gap, Zara and Topshop, amongst others. If you’re looking for something you won’t find on the high street, there’s an abundance of interesting and unusual shops in the West Quarter, including The Real McCoy, which stocks a huge collection of vintage and retro clothing. Music fans and budding guitarists must pay a visit to the music mecca, Mansons Guitar Shop – some of the biggest rock stars on the planet have called on its services, from Jimmy Page to Fleetwood Mac’s original frontman, Peter Green. The 600-year-old Exeter Cathedral is, in the current Dean’s own words, “one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere,” and it’s hard to disagree. The impressive vaulted ceiling and a fascinating 15th Century astronomical clock are worth the trip alone. As with any cathedral city, the cathedral quarter acts as a centrepiece to the city and creates a lively buzz around its many adjoining streets and lanes. The Cathedral Green is the ideal spot for a picnic in the summer, while in the winter it plays host to a fabulous Christmas Market, perfect for indulging in some yuletide treats and completing your last minute present shopping if you’re enjoying a festive break in the city or a nearby cottage.

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), a Victorian Gothic Revival building of local red sandstone, is reminiscent of a slightly smaller (yet no less grand) sibling of Kensington’s Natural History Museum. Home to an array of exhibits from ancient Egypt and other fascinating curiosities, including a life-sized elephant and giraffe, it’s free to visit and a captivating destination in the heart of the city. But it’s not just the city centre itself that draws people. Exeter Quayside is popular for its arts and crafts boutiques, as well as the outdoor/indoor activity centre, which offers kayaking, bike hire and Clip ‘n Climb – a fun and safe climbing experience for both children and grown-ups. You’ll also find the contemporary Spacex gallery. There are more places to eat here, including On the Waterfront, an eatery offering fantastic views over the quay. Whatever you’re looking for in a city break, you're bound to find it in Exeter.

One of our favourite areas of the city is Magdalen Road. Located less than a mile from the city centre within the highly sought after area of St Leonards, it has a variety of shops including a baker, fishmonger, florist and a delicatessen. For a number of years, this well-loved street has also held an annual Christmas fair, where the road is closed to traffic and sees many of the local independent retailers offering their wares of gifts, food and drink among the festivities. new exhibition featuring the work of abstract artist Trevor Bell opens in the Peninsula Arts Gallery at the University of Plymouth on 16th April. ‘Trevor Bell: Trans-Form’ is the final exhibition Bell worked on before sadly passing away in November last year. It features a selection of 11 monumental paintings from the 1990s and 2000s alongside a brand new sound score composed by Jamie Mills. The exhibition is a partnership between Peninsula Arts and The Box, Plymouth. Curated by Joseph Clarke, director of the Anima-Mundi gallery in St Ives, it will remain on display until 26th May. Described as ‘the last of the St Ives modernists’, Bell was born in Leeds before moving to St Ives, Cornwall in 1955. His presence there, along with the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon gave British Art an international reputation. When Bell held his first solo exhibition in London in 1958, Patrick Heron described him as ‘the best non-figurative painter’ of

his generation. Fellowships, scholarships, commissions and awards followed. He also spent 20 years working in America as a Professor at Florida State University. “Showing an exhibition of work by Trevor Bell is a long-held ambition for Plymouth,” says CEO for The Box, Paul Brookes. “His large-scale intense colour works will provide visitors to the Peninsula Arts gallery with an amazingly visual experience. We’re deeply sorry that he won’t be able to see the exhibition for himself, but hope it will be a ﬁtting tribute to him, showing that the vibrancy and energy of his work lives on.” A series of events inspired by the exhibition will also take place during April and May, including talks, gallery tours, family activities, yoga sessions and a newly commissioned dance co-choreographed and performed by Sarah Fairhall and Lois Taylor. Open between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays), and 11am until 4pm on Saturday, admission to the gallery is free, so be sure to take a look around next time you’re in Plymouth.

ew film The Mercy, released early this year, tells the true and ultimately tragic story of amateur weekend sailor and businessman Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth) as he gambles everything to compete in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. In the hope of becoming the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping, Donald leaves his wife Clare (Rachel Weisz) and their children behind to embark on his vessel named the Teignmouth Electron. The film gives a fascinating insight into the struggles Crowhurst grappled with – one of the most enigmatic tales of recent times. When his business, Electron Utilisation, runs into financial trouble, Crowhurst is introduced to Taunton businessman, Stanley Best, who agrees to back Donald’s company and eventually sponsors his attempt to sail around the globe, a process that involves having a trimaran specially made to Crowhurst’s own specification.

As Donald prepares for the race – overseeing the building of the Teignmouth Electron – many around him believe that he’ll ‘snap out of it’, that he’ll never actually go through with the race – after all, he’s just an amateur weekend sailor who finds occasional solace on his small 20-foot boat, Pot of Gold. In fact, Rachel Weisz, who plays Donald’s wife, says: “I think Donald had a lot of madcap ideas which often didn’t get carried out, so at first when Clare hears he’s going to enter this race, it’s such a preposterous idea to her, because he’s not a professional sailor.” But as you become more immersed in the film, you start to realise that Donald Crowhurst isn’t going to let this one go, despite his obvious wavering as he approaches the journey’s beginning. When eventually he climbs aboard his vessel, Colin Firth’s portrayal really comes into its own, showing Crowhurst’s barely concealed dismay as he finds the Teignmouth Electron in a woefully unprepared state, attempting to keep a stiff upper lip for the sake of his onlooking family.

The film is beautiful to watch, with rolling shots of Teignmouth that show just how beautiful a location it is, one that’s typical of a town so close to the English Riviera. Sweeping aerials of Crowhurst’s vessel show it ploughing through the Atlantic, and there are times when you really believe he’s going to do it. But things soon start to go wrong as you watch the protagonist come to terms with the fact that he simply cannot complete the voyage; as you witness him slowly but surely show signs of mental illness, cemented when a scene depicts him having a conversation through an unplugged telephone. There’s a frustrating sense of pride – that he must not let his family down – that comes out naturally from Colin Firth’s portrayal; and on the other end of the ordeal, Rachel Weisz’s depiction of Clare Crowhurst shows with great prowess how the real-life Clare managed to keep her head up, despite the obvious danger her husband was putting himself in.

You get the feeling that she understands why Donald is embarking on such a mission – that she wants to shake him and talk him out of it, but she won’t because she knows what it means to him. Indeed, Donald's defining line, “I am going because I would have no peace if I stayed,” seems to resonate throughout the rest of the film. The Mercy has really served to put Teignmouth back on the map, just as Crowhurst did himself as he spent several weeks in the town preparing for his departure, holding press conferences, making repairs to his boat and, eventually, climbing down the ladder to the harbour and being ferried to his awaiting vessel. On the location, Colin Firth says: “The people [of Teignmouth] were really very lovely. We were made to feel extremely welcome. It’s not convenient to have a film crew in your town, but there was an awful lot of affection for Donald Crowhurst and for this story.”

DID YOU KNOW? Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one of nine entrants to complete the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Bernard Moitessier, who rejected the philosophy behind a commercial competition, abandoned the race while in a position to win, instead continuing to sail for sailing’s sake. He eventually circled the globe one and a half times!

EDUCATION They invite parents and pupils to come in during the school day to allow them time to have meaningful discussions about your son or daughter, as opposed to holding the regular ‘open mornings’. What’s more, the school also holds an annual Amaze Me Day, Saturday 9th June, for any local children from nursery to Year 9. This is a great opportunity for local children to experience the facilities and get involved in some fantastic activities including pool kayaking, balance biking, dance, drama, coding and cooking. There are also workshops in which parents can join: Paediatric First Aid and Nutrition for children. During the summer, the school also runs a highly successful summer programme in which a range of activity based day camp options are offered. St John’s welcomes local pupils to the school, and offers local fees to those living within 15 miles of the school postcode, as deﬁned by Google Maps.
