It’s been a most exciting start to the year here at Engine House Media and we are delighted to bring you the first issue of Devon Living. Launching new media is somewhat akin to having a baby – the initial excitement, the anticipation... and then the sheer delight! I somehow managed to do both with the launch of Cornwall Living and six years on it’s still exceptionally inspiring. I would like to say a huge thank you to our clients, suppliers, team and you, our readers, for helping us make our dream of launching in this great county a reality. Every month we’ll be producing and distributing a whopping 40,000 copies of Devon Living across the county – from Saunton to Sidmouth, Dartmouth to Exmoor, you’ll see Devon Living everywhere. So, wherever you go pick up a copy to explore the best in homes, interiors, art, food and much, much more… This month Felix (our in-house editorial manager) has been looking at the booming Devon property market and in our cover feature (page 10) he takes a look at some stunning homes on the market. We meet Devon’s very own children’s author Philip Reeve (page 42) as one of his books makes the Hollywood screen and review Colin Firth’s latest blockbuster film The Mercy (page 74) that has put Teignmouth firmly back on the Devon map. Michelin star chef and philanthropist, Michael Caines talks about his plans for Lympstone Manor in Exmouth (page 48), while Will Chudley, scrum half for the Exeter Chiefs, reveals what he loves most about Devon (page 64). We hope you enjoy reading the inaugural issue of Devon Living as much as we have putting it together. We can’t wait to get started on the next issue, see you next month!

Renowned for its excellent beach break, Saunton Sands, and the neighbouring bays of Croyde and Woolacombe, offer a surfer’s paradise and a seemingly endless family playground – this is beachside living at its very best. The beach itself is backed by an expanse of undulating dunes with direct access to the South West Coast Path for those who prefer a stroll to sand between their toes. This fabulous Art Deco hotel provides the perfect base for exploring the area but, if you don’t feel like venturing far, two heated pools, a gym and spa facilities will keep both grown-ups and little ones relaxed and entertained. Dining comes in the form of a 2 AA Rosette, award-winning restaurant, The Dining Room. For those looking for a less formal eating experience, The Terrace Lounge offers light lunches, while the Beachside Grill, sister café to the hotel, is a beachside bistro with a laid back vibe – all have stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Rugglestone Inn makes runner up in Countryfile’s Country Pub of the Year! Situated next to a stream in Widecombe-inthe-Moor, Rugglestone Inn was converted from its original form as a cottage in 1832. Inside you’ll find a cosy woodburner, while on sunny days a large garden welcomes

dogs, walkers and anybody who enjoys being out and about in this beautiful corner of Devon. Indeed, it’s a true country pub, and this year it achieved runner up in BBC Countryfile’s Country Pub of the Year. Judge Mark Rowe says: “It just ticks all the boxes for what you want from a country pub – good food, fine ales, nice wine, welcoming people, and it’s just a perfect place if you’ve been up in the moors all day exploring the tors of Dartmoor!” For more information call 01364 621327 or visit www.rugglestoneinn.co.uk

Exceptional golf on the edge of the moors Situated on the western slopes of Dartmoor National Park, Tavistock Golf Club lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The course was established in 1890 and with continual updating and maintenance to the highest standards, it now offers a challenging course to golfers of all abilities. Thanks to excellent drainage, the course and the greens (which generally run true and fast) rarely close, thus allowing trolleys to be used all year round. Indeed, there’s no need for winter greens or tees, except during major course maintenance.

Dennis Redfield

Over the years Tavistock Golf Club has also built a reputation for first catering, which is provided by experienced chefs and delivered by a friendly team of staff.

PROPERTY We take a look inside some of Devon’s most beautiful and exclusive homes, from coast to country.

W

e all have our own personal idea of that dream home lodged somewhere in our minds, whether a vague, fuzzy notion or a very specific vision. It might be that grand country pile to reign over; perhaps a chic contemporary pad on the coast, or an elegant townhouse in the heart of the city. Whatever it might be, you’re likely to find it somewhere in Devon. Over the following pages, we’ve selected a small batch of some of Devon’s most gorgeous homes, taking a peek inside these beautifully realised properties, where the views are as breathtaking as the interior design.

But first, what’s the attraction of living in Devon exactly? Gail Streatfeild of estate agent Chartsedge tells us: “Devon offers some of the most beautiful coastline and countryside in the UK, and what’s more, you can still pick up some truly stunning homes for less than the price of a flat in London. According the UK House Price Index, the average price for a detached house in London in 2017 was a whopping £897,788, whereas a similar property would only set you back as little as £371,870. Advances in technology mean that distance workers get a great work/life balance, as much of Devon has superfast broadband meaning your office needs never be too far away. Great schools, friendly communities, stunning countryside and a quieter way of life is what living in Devon is all about.”

The countryside awaits…

| OPENING FEATURE

With Devon known for its beautiful rolling countryside, it’s easy to see the attraction of donning the wellies, taking in the fresh air and enjoying a simpler way of life. If your dream is of rural bliss tucked up in a fairy tale thatched cottage on the Moor, then perhaps Bush House is for you (price £985,000). Gail of Chartsedge says: “This magnificent thatched former farmhouse sits in the heart of the popular rural village of Spreyton on the north edge of Dartmoor. The property has been a much loved family home and has oodles of character and charm, retaining many of its original features to include stone fireplaces, oak joinery and floors, and beamed ceilings. It comes with six bedrooms, two/three bathrooms, a homely country kitchen with Aga and two striking reception rooms.” But there’s more to this idyll than first meets the eye, as Gail explains a potentially lucrative business opportunity, ripe for holiday lettings. “Outside and to the rear of the house and grouped round a courtyard there is a sweet three-bedroom cottage, a further barn that has been converted into a games room/billiard room, a traditional barn and a detached garage.” With the entire grounds stretching to around 3.7 acres, there is plenty of space to spread your wings. For more information contact Chartsedge: www.chartsedge.co.uk

RIGHT The Chanters House

If you have in excess of a cool £7 million to spend, and fancy being lord or lady of the manor, then surely The Chanters House in Ottery St Mary is the one for you (guide price: offers of £7,000,000). Currently on the market with Knight Frank, and nestled in the heart of the Devonshire countryside, this is a real gem. Partner at Knight Frank, James Crawford tells us: “Not every property has a private library over 70 feet in length and 30 feet high, but that is not all that separates the spectacular Chanters House from other important country houses. The library, added in 1890 for the then Lord Coleridge, whose family had already lived there for generations, in order to house his 18,000 collection of books, is indeed supremely

impressive, but the house is in fact a superb family home with all the mod cons such as swimming pool, modern kitchens and ensuite bathrooms, all beautifully refurbished and well presented, ideal for modern living. The house overlooks parkland with a river and woodland and there is a coach house, walled garden and two cottages all set in over 21 acres. “The Chanters House is also well located to access to all the best private and state schools the West Country has to offer, and is convenient to Exeter and its ever popular international airport. Whilst a private home, it could easily support a commercial operation such as wedding venue subject to the usual consents. In short it is one of the West County’s most important houses which will attract interest from buyers not only from within the UK but also from abroad.” Another grand home ticking all the boxes for that country escape is the magnificent Whitechapel, near Exmoor (guide price £2,650,000). This splendid Elizabethan Grade I listed manor house boasts beautifully manicured formal gardens and glorious views of rolling countryside. Edward Tallack of the agent Savills tells us: “Whitechapel is a most impressive listed manor house on the cusp of Exmoor National Park. The property has a fascinating history and is rich in striking features.” For more information, contact Savills: www.savills.co.uk

In the heart of the city… If the buzz of the city is beckoning, then you should swiftly arrange a viewing of 1A Baring Crescent, a chic four-bedroom house with an eye for cutting edge design (guide price £950,000). This contemporary build is located in an extremely sought-after address – a real statement home. The agent says: “The architect has created a unique modern dwelling which draws on the classical architecture of the original Regency Georgian villas within Baring Crescent, achieved by creating large internal spaces with oversize doors and windows and floor to ceiling light sources. The building has underfloor heating on each floor, washed oak flooring, a smart oak staircase with seamless glass balustrade, a Bulthaup kitchen, and an impressive six metre high opaque glazed wall with stunning glass chandelier.” For more information contact the agent, Wilkinson Grant & Co: www.wilkinsongrant.co.uk

The main draw to this picturesque and verdant corner of Devon is the lifestyle on offer Welcome to the coast… Of course, we couldn’t forget the beautiful coastline that borders the county on the north and south. Harriet Cundy, Director of Marchand Petits’ Salcombe office tells us specifically about the draw of the South Hams on the south coast. “The property on offer in the South Hams is diverse and varied,” says Harriet, “from period townhouses and cosy fisherman’s cottages, to contemporary coastal villas and substantial waterside homes. We are lucky to have sold several properties more than once, as family requirements change and owners

up or downsize to move closer to the water or purchase a larger home.” Hariet continues: “The main draw to this picturesque and verdant corner of Devon is the lifestyle on offer. With sandy beaches, hidden creeks and inlets and Dartmoor as a backdrop, there is something for all the family. Road and rail links, via the A38 Devon Expressway and Totnes train station, keep the region well connected with the capital, you can leave Paddington and have sand between your toes within the same afternoon on one of the glorious South Hams beaches.”

High House, Salcombe

Everything is perfectly considered, with neat touches and state-of-the-art fittings and fixtures throughout. With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, there’s ample room for bringing friends and family together in a truly gorgeous setting. Interior designer Gillian Coates of Roomshadows uses her scrapbook of ideas collected from around the world to bring expression to our homes.

nterior designer Gillian Coates is an avid believer that the interior of our homes is vitally important to our wellbeing. “Home is where our creative heart is,” Gillian tells us. “It needs to feel special and loved, and to incorporate the characters of the people that occupy it.” As soon as her studies finished, Gillian hopped onto a sailing yacht bound for warmer climes, beginning a 15-year love affair with sailing, which took her around the world. “Whenever I was ashore, I collated a mental scrapbook of interesting and innovative architectural and interior design ideas. It was my passion to collect objects, textiles and scraps of decorating materials – as many as could be stowed on a small sailing vessel!” When dry land finally beckoned, Gillian lived in France for 20 years, nurturing her love for renovating and decorating houses. Eventually upon returning to England, Gillian honed her skills with a postgraduate diploma in Interior Design, before setting up interior design ABOVE ì Interior company, ‘Roomshadows’. designer “When I help someone create their home,” Gillian Coates explains Gillian, “it’s a natural instinct to draw creating upon the wealth of ideas I’ve seen and adapt them schemes for the next to fit with the personalities who inhabit the space.” project Roomshadows is all about being expressive and creative in bold or subtle ways, encouraging clients BELOW î to embrace imaginative and inventive changes. It’s Gillian uses ideas collected about the creation of a place that will provide happy from her memories and good feelings as well as comfort, travels and functionality and a unique style. personalises “I love to help the client recognise what they love them for the specific client about their home and the potential it has,” continues Gillian, “how to make it their perfect space. I try to make a home into a visual treasure trove using colour, furniture, art, and table wear. Sourcing unusual objects that reflect the occupiers’ personality or hobbies adds a sense of belonging.” Small changes make a big impact; simply changing the colour of a wall, dressing the windows differently, or adding some bold patterned cushions or rugs can transform a space. Once this first step is taken, it’s easier to realise that perhaps moving the furniture, knocking a wall down or even extending into the attic could revolutionise the way you live and view your home. “I don’t think I will ever tire of seeing people’s homes,” says Gillian, “being amazed at how beautiful they are or visualising how they could become so.”

Let the Four Seasons team work their magic to help enhance your home

O

ur homes are probably our biggest on-going projects, with many of us choosing to transform them rather than move. So, what are the benefits of extending to accommodate a conservatory or orangery? According to the Four Seasons team, more and more customers are deciding to add an extension in order to transform their lifestyle with their living rooms and/ or kitchens. A contemporary orangery is a very popular option at the moment, and Four Seasons specialises in completing the whole process from start to finish, with expertise ranging from helping clients with building regulations and planning applications, to completing building work and arranging work by the finishing trades, from electricians to decorators. One issue that often puts people off is the severe fluctuation between extreme heat and bitter cold, from summer to winter. Fortunately, Four Seasons can mitigate this. A fantastic new option is to retro-fit a new roof to an existing conservatory, great for those that suffer with old Upvc roofs. This is subject to a structural survey, but if you’re building

from the ground up, you needn’t worry, as the technologies and materials now being used by most conservatory manufacturers are up to scratch with modern standards. Offering their top tips when it comes to design and installation, Four Seasons tells us that while flicking through brochures and looking at photos can give you an idea of what to expect, nothing beats experiencing the different designs ‘in the flesh’. For this reason, the team recommends popping into the showroom on Sowton Industrial Estate, Exeter, to find the conservatory or orangery that best suits you.

statement in your bathroom with a visit to Studio One South West

ith three fully working bathroom displays, 17 working showers and a further 18 displays to view, as well as a level access wet room complete with spa seat and underfloor heating, Studio One South West’s new showroom in Plymouth is perfect for those seeking a stunning new bathroom or wet room. Owner Mark Fowdon and his staff have kitted out the new showroom from scratch. Mark explains: “It was always my plan to open our premier bathroom, wet room and tile showroom here in Plymouth. The idea was to create a real home experience for our customers. When people come here, they won’t need to go anywhere else. With our working displays we can demonstrate different shower systems, flow rates, wet room floor drains and toilet systems. From there, we can either just supply bathroom or tile products, or we can supply and install them for our clients.” Mark has been in the bathroom business for 14 years and has a team of trusted tradesmen ensuring that all works are done in-house, for those customers wanting a complete ‘supply and fit’ service. Mark tells us: “Our fitters take care of everything, from the electrics, plastering and tiling to plumbing, carpentry and painting.” In the showroom, experienced staff are always on hand to help you with everything you need to know, from design and product options to materials and installation. “Our customers get the very best advice available.”

The bathrooms and tiles at Studio One South West are all medium-to-highend, with some of the top brands from around the world available, including Laufen, Roca, Hansgrohe & Axor, Victoria & Albert, Geberit, Vola, Artelinea and Vado. Italian tiles are imported by Cornwall Tile Centre, where Studio One South West’s two Cornish showrooms are based. Mark continues: “We always want the best for our clients, so we will source any brand for anyone, to make sure they get the materials of their choice.” The team can even produce computergenerated 3D visuals of how a bathroom will look during the consultation phase, so you know exactly what to expect! “There’s not a lot we don’t know about the installation of bathrooms, wet rooms or tiles and the vast choice of equipment available. That’s why the majority of our work comes from personal recommendations by customers who’ve been impressed by the quality of our advice and service.”

Agnes Arber was awarded first class results at both UCL and The University of Cambridge for her BSc and Masters in Botanical Studies. She went on to become the first female botanist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first woman to receive the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London. Agnes Arber lived botanics. From her work, we wanted to create a fitting tribute. A convergence of nine herbs and fruits, distilled together in the same pot. With savoury, earthy notes of juniper, coriander, and angelica - complemented by the warm, spicy undertones of cassia. Finally woven with a sweet, acidic, refreshing bloom of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and just a twist of liquorice. Introducing Paul Parsons of D E Vernon Violins, a charming business based in the South Hams, that’ll bring sweet music to your ears.

N

ì ABOVE ê BELOW

Expert craftsmanship goes into the restoration of every violin, viola and cello è RIGHT Paul Parsons, of D E Vernon Violins

estled in the countryside, half a mile from one of the finest beaches in south Devon is the village of Slapton, itself an ancient settlement mentioned in the Doomsday Book. The Jewel in Slapton’s crown is the church of St James, established in the late 13th Century. It will come as no surprise therefore that among Slapton’s eclectic inhabitants is a business dedicated to the restoration of fine antiquities, in this case, violins. Paul Parsons, a violin restorer and dealer, and his wife Charlotte, relocated home and their business DE Vernon Violins to south Devon, giving up the frenetic lifestyle of Manchester’s city centre for a slower pace by the coast. “Giving up the mantle of the north west’s oldest violin dealership was an easy decision,” Paul tells us. “After 35 years of dealing with many of the area’s finest musicians and their fine instruments and bows, moving to Slapton is allowing me to continue to refine my work and indeed choose the work I really want to do, without commercial pressures.” Paul started work with the company in 1983, established by D E Vernon himself, back in 1964. Paul trained in repair and restoration techniques, then in a hugely busy commercial workshop environment and progressing such as to take over the company in 1989. “I’ve spent a 35 year career looking after fine instruments that are not only an investment

for the musician but in many cases are making a serious financial investment,” continues Paul. The laws of supply and demand have throughout violin history pushed prices upwards with many fine and especially old Italian instruments out of the reach of fine musicians. Paul has over recent years found and supplied fine instruments for a number of clients who specifically want investment quality items. Some investors loan instruments to aspiring young and talented musicians either directly or through specialist music teaching institutions, many of which themselves own fine collections. It would be fair to say that you do not have to be a musician to enjoy fine antique instruments. Slapton has an appeal of its own to the clients who visit the workshop and home of Paul and Charlotte Parsons to discuss restorations or buying fine instruments. If you have an instrument that needs repair, if you’re looking to source a rare instrument, or simply you’re interested to discover more about Paul’s work, why not drop him a line now?

re you in the process of kitting out your home or holiday home? If so, then Beacon Electrical, a Plymouthbased, second-generation family-run business established for over 40 years, is for you. Why not also visit sister company, Beacon Blinds? Operating from the Beacon Park head office site, the excellent showroom displays all the latest designs and fabrics, offering a free measuring and service as well as free fitting! The Beacon team is known for exceptional customer service, offering the best advice to its customers, coupled with ultra-competitive pricing. Beacon team member Mark Higgins tells us: “We are members of the Euronics buying groups, which pools the buying power of over 600 companies throughout the country to enable us to compete with even the biggest of national stores and internet outlets. Our slogan is ‘Internet prices, local service!’ “We originally supplied house wiring and lighting supplies to the keen DIYer and trade customers. But since then, we’ve continued to expand our product offering to include a wide range of heating, decorative lighting, white goods and small domestic appliances.” Each branch has its own identity and a tailored range of products to suit the demands of the local community. The south Devon town stores in Totnes and Kingsbridge, for instance, have a great range of the latest technology televisions and audio products from Samsung, Sony, Sonos and many others. Beacon Electrical’s biggest success story over the last 15 years, Mark tells us, is the expansion of the white goods market.

“This is the supply of washing machines, dryers, refrigeration and cookers. We’re the largest independent supplier of these goods in Devon, and are going from strength to strength with our unbeatable combination of professional advice and low prices.” The main brands the team stocks are Hotpoint, Bosch, Beko, Neff, Indesit, Hoover, Samsung, Miele, Rangemaster, Belling and Stoves. But what really sets Beacon apart, Mark continues, is that “we can order in any model from any manufacturer by special order to supply the best possible product to suit our customers’ needs.” So, if you’re in need of anything electrical in south Devon and want to support a company that in turn champions local trade, why not pay Beacon Electrical a visit?

Long since renowned for its white sand beaches, turquoise seas, relaxed pace and simple pleasures the Isles of Scilly is just a short flight away, thanks to Skybus and Exeter Airport.

F

rom the moment you arrive at Exeter airport to catch the Skybus to Scilly you feel as if you are about to embark on a very special adventure. The flight time to Scilly may only take an hour but when you arrive you could be a world away. There is a very distinct feel to Scilly that is like nowhere else. The air is clean and clear, tinged with the sweet note of narcissi in spring, the heady scent of gorse in early summer and that unmistakable smell of bracken combined with the salty sea breeze that transports you to heaven every time you inhale it. It’s not just the olfactory senses that are in for a treat when you visit Scilly as the clarity of light is almost blinding. When the sun is shining the sparkle of the white sand beaches set against the clear blue waters creates a magical, be-jewelled setting. It must be the combination of the clear waters, unique maritime climate and fresh sea air makes Scilly so special. There are lots of events going on across Scilly throughout the year.

The annual spring-time walking festival, Walk Scilly 2018, is back this year with a longer duration and more walks by popular demand. Coinciding with the school holidays, the festival can now be enjoyed by all the family. Unspoilt and uncrowded, there’s no better way of exploring the islands’ amazing scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage than the Walk Scilly’s rambles, hikes and strolls, with expert local guides bringing the treasures and hidden gems of each island to life. The islands also boast an eclectic mix of food producers, growers, fishermen and farmers that serve up their catches, crops and creations to the wonderful selection of pubs, cafés and restaurants. On a recent trip we were lucky enough to sample some of Scilly’s foodie finest ahead of this year’s Taste of Scilly Festival that happens throughout September. Whatever the time of year, you’re sure to find something to enjoy on Scilly.

YOUR FAVOURITE

holiday cot tage We speak to Harry Roberts, founder of My Favourite Cottages, about what makes his holiday marketing business special. é ì ABOVE Location – still one of the most important factors in any holiday cottage’s potential

L

aunched by Harry Roberts, My Favourite Cottages first began when he decided to buy a Devon farmhouse and convert its old barn into a holiday home. Having discovered a slightly different way of marketing his own let, Harry later left his well-paid job in pursuit of his own enterprise. Everything he experienced with his own barn conversion continues to be relevant today. Whilst My Favourite Cottages is ostensibly a marketing business, for Harry, product is key, as he remembers from his early training in advertising. In particular, he values McCarthy’s ‘Four P’s’ – Price, Product, Place and Promotion – the most. Harry firstly explains how he adopts the ‘product’ side of this approach. “It’s essential, whether you’re starting from scratch or already have a holiday cottage, to know whether your product matches what the market is looking for. Are you up to date with this market? Put simply, being up to date with today’s market means contemporary kitchens, modern bathrooms, and as much added value as you can afford, including WiFi, games consoles, hot tubs, and so on.” He also discusses location, which is still “one of the most important factors in successfully renting a holiday cottage. Cottages by the sea obviously attract more interest, but everyone is looking for

something different. So, make sure your ‘product’ fits their aspirations and help them live the dream.” With price, Harry advises you check out the competition, as your guests certainly will. Potential bookers search for suitable cottages in an area, then make a short list, knocking out those that are too expensive or even too cheap, until they’re able to pick a winner. On promotion, you must “realise you’re an online business, so having a decent website is a must. Each of our cottages has its own website, serving as the best shop window. Without a good website, your cottage is likely to be lost in the crowd.” Finally, Harry tells us that good photography is absolutely key, as is knowing how to work the Internet. “This is where we come in,” he explains. “My Favourite Cottages has grown from managing 0 to 100 properties in just six years. The basis of that growth has been referral from our existing clients, but just as important is that we are personable and professional, promising to put you, the owner first, making your life that little bit easier.”

TO THE EXE After running the popular Avocet Café in Topsham for nine years, for Nigel and Caroline Lamacraft, it was time for a new challenge.

ABOVE é Each room is both beautiful and unique RIGHT è After the extensive refurbishment, the rooms at Bridge House look gorgeous!

N

igel and Caroline both grew up in the Devon countryside and were keen to return to a more rural setting. Nigel tells us: “We love Bampton with its great community spirit and excellent range of independent shops and pubs, and it’s great to be able to walk just a few minutes from your front door and be away from it all, with hardly a building in sight.” Nigel and Caroline have been at Bridge House, a gorgeous country restaurant with guest rooms, for more than four years. Situated in the beautiful Exe Valley and just three miles from Exmoor National Park, it’s a popular area for walking, cycling, fishing and shooting. Bridge House has been welcoming guests for over a century. Previously known as The Railway Hotel and before that, The Cyclists Rest, at one time, it was one of two Temperance hotels in the town. “Today, we’re still popular with cyclists, only we’re licensed to serve alcohol! “We offer a short daytime menu utilising the abundance of local, seasonal produce available to us, and everything is freshly made. We are always busy in our kitchen, making our own bread, cakes, puddings, chutneys, preserves, sorbets and cordials. Sunday lunch is especially popular – we service a traditional roast with either local Longhorn beef, Saddleback pork, slow-roasted local lamb shoulder or free-range Beech Ridge chicken with traditional accompaniments and fresh seasonal vegetables.” Nigel and Caroline are immensely proud of their en-suite rooms which, after extensive refurbishment, are now available for guests. “Our aim was to keep the traditional feel of our lovely 250 year

old building but incorporate modern comforts. We have chosen handmade cast iron beds from Cornwall and woolfilled Devon Duvets, complemented with Bramley toiletries in keeping with our ethos of using local and natural as much as possible, just as we do with our food. “We feel it has certainly been worth all the love that we’ve put into our rooms, especially when a guests comes to breakfast saying ‘If I’d known the bed was that comfortable, I’d have gone to bed earlier!’” Nigel is the chef and Caroline looks after front of house. “When we’re open, we’re both always here as we believe that the personal touch is at the heart of our business, creating a relaxed atmosphere whether you’re staying for a few days, coming for lunch or just popping in for coffee and cake.”

The team guides clients through a detailed design process, offering a range of sizes, layouts and finishes. With a rise in popularity when it comes to glamping, and a surge of interest in tiny homes, the market has seen a boom in generic pods and shepherds huts on the market, but Ben and Jo have always aimed to offer something a little different. The standard and size of the work, bespoke design and sustainability of the materials used means that their solid timber-frame structures offer real value for money. The majority class as caravans, and are often used in areas where gaining planning permission for more permanent buildings would be tricky. Permitted development rights allow a caravan up to 20m x 6.7m to be sited

in a garden, for use by a relative, so if housing a family member is proving tricky, Barrel Top can offer a seriously practical solution. Likewise, for elderly or disabled relatives, the lodges can be designed for comfortable but stylish living. In 2014, Ben and Jo were granted permission to create an eco-tourism site. Hidden down deep country lanes, Devon Dens offers guests a chance to stay in beautiful, off-grid cabins, made by Barrel Top Wagons, whilst submersing themselves in nature. The Den has now been welcoming guests for more than a year, and the all new cabin will be in place by the end of March, with bookings already flooding in for Easter and beyond. With no WiFi or phone signal, this is the perfect place to reconnect with nature, to sit back on the veranda and simply enjoy the birds singing.

DID YOU KNOW? Barrel Top Wagons have many purposes, from beautiful homes, art studios and commercial spaces, to potting sheds, workshops, even as state-of-the-art cinema rooms! They can also generate an excellent additional income, serving as top-notch holiday accommodation.

eep in the south west, Peter Bull Resorts provide luxury caravan and lodge holiday homes at three different parks, and the team has a few very good reasons to start searching for your dream holiday home now. Firstly, at this time of year, you’ll find brand new holiday homes arriving at holiday parks. With improved designs and additional features, this is a great time to view all of the new models on offer. Plus, Peter Bull is offering brand new plots on all three of its parks, so you can choose the perfect outlook for your new holiday home! Next, by selecting and completing your holiday home early in the season, you have as much of the year as possible left to enjoy your new lifestyle. Peter Bull Resorts are open for a 12-month season, so you can start enjoying your new home as soon as you’ve completed the purchase. A huge bonus of owning a holiday home is being able to sublet it for part of the year. You may want to consider joining a sublet scheme and the earlier you do so, the more bookings you’re likely to get. By joining Peter Bull’s sublet scheme, you can earn money towards your ongoing costs,

making holiday home ownership that much more affordable. One of the most frequently asked questions from potential new owners is about site fees. At Peter Bull Resorts, you don’t have to worry about site fees for 2018 or 2019 when purchasing selected caravans. Some luxury lodges also include 2020 fees too!

ç MAIN Philip Reeve and his wife, Sarah

A

s I head deeper into the heart of Dartmoor on my very first assignment for Devon Living, I’m excited – if not a just little nervous – at the prospect of meeting my subject, on his home turf. Spring lambs bounce by the roadside, as rock tors rise ominously in my periphery. Taking a moment to absorb the surroundings, I descend the Moor into the village below, passing over a little stone bridge, snaking through a narrow country lane before arriving at my destination; a small farmstead of several cottages and barns. My host’s cottage occupies a tranquil spot in the Devon countryside, with sweeping views of rolling hills dotted with sheep and wild ponies. The subject in question is Carnegie Medal winning author Philip Reeve, who has won the acclaim of both critics and readers with his colourful, richly imagined stories, beloved of the young adult audience. His critically lauded masterpiece, Mortal Engines, is currently receiving the Hollywood blockbuster treatment by Universal Studios – due for cinematic release this Christmas. An author operating at the height of his powers, the first in his latest trilogy, Railhead, has been shortlisted for another Carnegie Medal. But even had I expected an ego to match the success, I needn’t have worried; Philip is welcoming, affable and frequently selfeffacing, chatting easily over a cup of tea.

Philip lives here on the Moor with his wife, Sarah, and their teenage son, Sam. Today, however, he is accompanied by their poodle, Frodo, who jealously guards the sofa I sit on, eyeing up the digestives conspiratorially. A gentle humour and mischievous touch run throughout his work. Seemingly his only limitation is his imagination, which just happens to be as vast and vivid as the worlds his characters inhabit. But Philip’s literary career actually began as a freelance illustrator, working on the popular Horrible Histories series, “knocking out 10 or 15 of them every year” throughout the 1990s. Working to a strict brief, there was little opportunity to exercise his fertile imagination. So, in his spare time he put pen to paper, eventually shaping his first proper novel, Mortal Engines. “It started out as a bit of a hobby really, which writing has always been to me, like having a train set to tinker with on days off... when you can’t get to sleep at night, thinking up storylines and characters. There was never any moment where I thought, ‘I want to be a writer’; it was just something I was doing. Luckily, it sold well enough that the publisher wanted more.” Like his hero, Tolkien, Philip has that rare knack for creating his own unique universe, fully-formed and entirely authentic in every

detail, then furnishing it with interesting and flawed, three-dimensional characters; at once otherworldly yet familiar, futuristic yet grounded within our own reality. He often spends as much time mulling over his characters and their world as he does actually writing, as the journey takes shape in his head. “I’m always thinking visually, but I think writing is much more filmic than illustrative; it’s much more akin to making a movie in your head than painting a picture...” It’s pertinent, then that just a week later, Philip will visit the New Zealand filmset where legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson and director Christian Rivers are adapting Mortal Engines for the big screen. If anyone can bring Philip’s complex world to life, it’s the multi Oscarwinning crew behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy who did what many said was impossible. You sense Philip’s genuine excitement and anticipation of the results.

The Moor While Philip originally hails from Brighton, his adopted home holds a magnetic draw over him. “I’ve always liked Dartmoor since I was a child... I remember going to Hound Tor when I was about eight or nine with my parents, and

thinking it was the most amazing place I’d ever seen. I loved Dartmoor instantly. Then in my teens I discovered the illustrator Brian Froud’s work, which at the time was very much infused with the spirit of the Moor, reinforcing the notion of Dartmoor in my mind, and giving me the idea that I wanted to be an illustrator.” With art college beckoning, followed by a burgeoning illustration career, Dartmoor slipped to the back of Philip’s mind. But its draw would prove compelling, and after several holidays staying nearby, Philip and Sarah eventually made the permanent move. “I was a full time freelance illustrator by then so I could pretty much live wherever I wanted... so I wanted to live in the middle of Dartmoor!” In fact, as Philip quips, the guesthouse’s owners have complained they keep losing business as all their returning guests love it so much, they end up simply moving down and becoming neighbours! I can certainly see the appeal of it myself. “It’s a nice place to work because I can go out and walk, and think.” Yet for someone who has made his name largely for sculpting futuristic landscapes, at first this feels at odds with Dartmoor’s rugged semi-wilderness. Look closer, however, and you’ll see how it has

seeped into his work, whether the borrowing of geographic names (lead character, Tom Natsworthy in Mortal Engines) or even the landscape itself, as Philip recounted upon the release of Railhead. “A few years ago, on my wife’s birthday, we went to Lydford Gorge, on the far side of Dartmoor. It’s a place about as unlike a futuristic industrial city as you could imagine. The River Lyd flows through the deep gorge. There is a famous waterfall called The White Lady, and a beautiful, mossy path leading up through the oak woods, beside the rapids. There’s also a spot called Devil’s Cauldron where the river plunges down into a deep chasm. Some previous landowner bolted metal walkways to the rock-faces so that sightseers could venture closer. The walkways are rusted now and maybe unsafe... But looking at them from the higher path made me think about a whole city built in that way, jutting from vertical cliff faces, half drowned in waterfall spray. Ideas lie in wait for us in the landscape, and they’re not always the ideas that we expect.” And there are more immediate influences too, such as The Dartmoor Pegasus, a recent instalment from his Reeve and McIntyre

collaborative series for early readers. It’s interesting to note how many significant connections in Philip’s life have gone full circle, many of these deeply rooted in the geography of Dartmoor. The other great connection, of course, is his literary influence – growing up on a diet of Tolkien, then years later having his own book adapted for the screen by the very same filmmaker who so successfully adapted Tolkien. Yet for all these connections, Philip is ever keen to push things forward, refusing to be conveniently categorised into one genre or audience, never one to go stale as a writer. “If you’re going to keep a career going for a long time,” he muses, “it is vitally important that you change every so often and do something different... you have to keep pulling the rug out from under your feet.”

TABLE

MANORS We catch up with the inspiring chef, hotelier and philanthropist, Michael Caines MBE, to hear more about his plans for Lympstone Manor. WORDS BY FELIX ROWE

M

ichael Caines is the ultimate success story, overcoming adversity to achieve greatness, including an MBE for his culinary and philanthropic endeavours. He’s fiercely passionate about the landscape he calls home and the great produce it offers. Having attained and retained two Michelin stars as head chef at Dartmoor’s Gidleigh Park for 18 years, he has since picked up his first Michelin star at his new venture Lympstone Manor,

on the Exe estuary, within the first six months of opening. So, naturally, we were delighted to get the opportunity to catch up with Michael to discover more about the man behind the accolades. Michael fondly reminisces over childhood, one of six children growing up in Devon, enjoying trips to the beach and days out in the countryside. While his love for cooking would come later, he recalls a fulfilling childhood, one that instilled an appreciation of local produce and homecooked food.

As a young chef, he moved to London and certain figures emerged who would go on to influence him and greatly garner his respect. “Raymond Blanc was incredibly inspirational, as a young man,” explains Michael, “motivating me to work for the best, and ultimately to become the best. The Roux brothers, too – I would walk past Le Gavroche everyday, so it was great to go on to work with my heroes. “They are all very different chefs, in terms of style and presentation, but they all put great ingredients and expert technique at the heart of what they do… respecting the produce and seasonality. Great ingredients and technique result in great flavour.” So, how would Michael describe his style of cooking? “I’m classically trained, but not classical in approach… I don’t like to pigeonhole myself. I just try to cook great food in a modern European style. Composition is very important. It’s important to give people an interesting experience, both in presentation and flavour of the food, but also the setting itself.” Michael’s latest undertaking, Lympstone Manor on the outskirts of Exmouth, is a case in point. “After 21 years at Gidleigh Park, I

needed to do something new and forge my own future. If you’re going to do something, you’ve got to act on it. Someone once said to me: ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. If you didn’t do it then, then do it now.’” Putting the dream into action, Michael viewed countless places around Devon, to no avail, before stumbling upon Lympstone Manor. “I found the perfect place; it was very run down, a ramshackle home, but with loads of potential. The feeling and emotion of the place; there’s a connection with the landscape that caught me. It’s hard to portray without seeing it.” Soon after his first viewing, he put in an offer – and the rest, as they say, is history. An ambitious project, Michael says boldly: “Lympstone Manor is a true expression of what I wanted to do. It’s the realisation of a dream, my vision of country house hospitality for the 21st Century.” Everything about Lympstone Manor exudes luxury and opulence. The elegant Georgian country house sits proudly within 28 acres of beautiful manicured grounds and parkland, offering stunning views. The boutique hotel has 21 individually styled bedrooms and suites, many with

sumptuous and deep, rolltop baths. As a chef, Michael is a renowned perfectionist, selecting only the finest ingredients, then combining and presenting them with precision to create an experience for all the senses. These traits also apply to Michael the hotelier, with no expense spared to create the perfect ambiance for guests to enjoy, from the bespoke copper bar, well stocked with a carefully curated array of spirits, to the plush seating to sink into once drink is in hand. And then, of course, there’s the food itself. With an evolving seasonal menu that gets the tastebuds salivating, Michael is understandably reluctant to name his favourite dish. “That’s like asking someone to choose between their children!” he laughs. His menu reads like a roll call of some of the South West’s finest ingredients, from Darts Farm beef to River Exe mussels. Michael’s passion and determination are infectious – and show no signs of slowing down. Surely, anyone who has been awarded an MBE and multiple Michelin stars over his career has earned the right to kick back and

put their feet up. But never one to rest on his laurels or dwell on former glories, Michael is nothing if not ambitious. “What happens next is what really matters to me.” Michael’s long-term plan is to plant a vineyard in the grounds and produce his own sparkling wine in the Champagne style. As an amputee and an adopted child, Michael’s unique experiences have helped to shape his outlook on life, and he gets heavily involved in charitable and community enterprises. He set up the Michael Caines Academy in 2011 in association with his former alma mater, Exeter College, to nurture and inspire the next generation of chefs; he also participates in countless philanthropic activities with various charities. He speaks passionately about his endeavours, though in a refreshingly modest and understated way. Simply put, he just feels fortunate to be in a position where he can share his experiences and make a difference. “You have a responsibility if you are successful to give something back to society and my profile as a chef allows me to do that,” he says. “Hopefully my story will

inspire others to fulfil their dreams.” Michael’s other great passion is Formula One motorsport, as highlighted by his active role in hospitality for the Williams racing team. “I’ve always loved the sport,” he says, drawing parallels between motorsport and life as a worldclass chef. “It’s very glamorous and very precise, but requires great skill and drive too; performers at the top of their game, operating in a high-pressure environment.” While deeply passionate about Lympstone Manor, Michael is equally magnanimous towards his peers across the South West – sure there’s competition, but there’s camaraderie too and the belief that supporting each other is good for all. We’re eager to discover where Devon’s most accomplished chef chooses to eat out. Michael recites a huge list of names – too many to mention – from The Salutation Inn in Topsham to The Masons Arms in Knowstone, and The Elephant in Torquay. The Dartmoor Inn, Lydford, he says, is a Sunday lunch favourite. And Michael is equally passionate about

the great outdoors. “I do a lot of running, on the beach. I love Dartmoor and Exmoor too – it’s contrasting, but equally beautiful.” Indeed, despite having worked in some of the top restaurants in London and France, his eventual return to his home county was inevitable. “There’s no bigger ambassador for Devon than me! There’s so much beauty and a diverse landscape to explore… the tors, countryside, the beaches – they are all part of Devon’s rich tapestry. Couple this with the great produce and places to eat out, and there’s nowhere better. Where else in the UK will you find such a rich concentration of world-class producers right on your doorstep?”

L

aunched in September 2015 under the banner ‘The Spirit of Exmoor,’ Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is a premium craft gin made from 11 botanicals, distilled and blended on the banks of the picturesque river Lyn in north Devon. Passionate about all things gin, husband and wife team Pat Patel and Julie Heap are the faces behind this exciting venture. Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin features complex layers of citrus and pepper notes finely balanced with the distinct flavours of juniper and coriander, resulting in a mature, premium spirit. Hibiscus, cardamom and kaffir lime leaves have been artfully blended with these traditional aromatics, creating a full-flavoured, smooth gin. Pot distilled in a copper alembic still, Wicked Wolf Exmoor Gin is lovingly blended, filtered, bottled and labelled by hand in exclusive 100-litre batches. Currently, Wicked Wolf produces a minimum of two batches a week, but there are plans, according to Julie, to expand towards the end of the year. On the process of making the gin, Julie tells us: “Each aromatic is prepared by hand, infused and distilled separately resulting in 11 individual distillates, which are then skilfully blended. This approach allows us complete control over the strength of each flavour, and enables consistency from batch to batch. The gin is filtered at each stage of the production

In the past, these have been Silver Bullet, at 57% ABV, and another called Full Moon. CÔTE

We sample the menu at Côte Brasserie, Exeter.

A

s somebody who’s always appreciated the calm and quietude of life in the countryside, I never thought I’d find myself craving a city break. And yet, as my partner Jess and I merged onto the A30 and set our course for Exeter, it was with a great deal of excitement that I dipped the car window, let the air roar through the gap and settled into the open road. In the city, where you’d expect to find the very essence of modernity and technology, strangely, you get to go back to basics – to a time when shopping was more than just a one-click affair, where you return home the following afternoon

to find your items magically stowed in the shed. With this exciting prospect in mind, after arriving and checking in, we immediately hit the high street, noses out in search of that unmistakable smell of unspoiled fabric, shoe leather, and things we didn’t know existed but would soon seem vital to our very way of life. The excitement! The problem was that no matter how desperately my wardrobe was in need of updating, our breakfast had been woefully small and we were soon forced to accept that our evening meal could no longer wait that long. So, when Jess called a French brasserie just around the corner, it was with great relief that I heard her say, “4pm works for us, we’ll see you then.” One of many across the UK, Côte Brasserie in Exeter is a must for anyone looking to enjoy French-inspired dining in a calm yet atmospheric environment, one that gently encourages you to relax and take your time. Next to the front window, our table was ideal, affording us uninterrupted views of Exeter’s cathedral from where we sat. From the off, the service was warm and welcoming, even though we’d arrived 20 minutes early. Our table was immediately set up and before we knew it, we had chilled and distilled water on hand and ‘proper’ drinks on the way – a French beer called Meteor for me, a large glass of Sauvignon for Jess. For anyone who’s been to a Côte restaurant before, you’ll know that choosing what to eat is no mean feat. This isn’t due to a lack of interesting choice – quite the opposite, in fact! Eventually I settled to start with the crab mayonnaise, served with avocado, cucumber, capers and tarragon with toasted sour dough bread, while Jess began with the charcuterie board, which included smoked duck breast, Saucisson Sec, duck rillettes and Jambon de Savoie, served with baby gem salad and chargrilled French sour dough toast, and before I could pronounce ‘Saucisson’, they had arrived. Given our level of hunger you can

imagine the voracity with which we tucked in and it wasn’t long before our first round of plates was being cleared away. Next up, for me at least, was the Breton fish stew, a masterfully prepared bowlful made with seabass, mussels, clams, prawns and squid, all brought together with a blend of tomato, white wine and chilli. Jess had opted for the lamb rump. You’ll have to excuse the lack of detail on this one – so focussed was I on the masterpiece set before me that I failed to take any notice! After concluding the main course, Jess eagerly reminded me that, being a French restaurant, crème brulee was probably on the menu. She had a point and, as you’ve likely guessed already, it wasn’t long before we were tucking into our final course – me a rich fondant with vanilla pod ice cream, Jess a perfectly cracked crème brulee. So, how to summarise? The food was exceptional and the atmosphere, rather than being electric or subdued, reached a comfortable balance between the two. The service was warm and knowledgeable, and the staff couldn’t do enough to make us comfortable. The best part, however, is that all of this can be found just moments from the retail mecca that is Exeter’s high street, so if you’re thinking of planning your own Exeter city break, Côte Brasserie, Exeter comes highly recommended.

SEASONAL, SENSATIONAL We catch up with Donna and Paul Berry, owners of The Swan in Bampton, and find out more about their incredible string of success.

A

n AA Four Star Gold classic English country inn and the oldest pub in Bampton, The Swan offers the finest dishes using local, seasonal ingredients, all seasoned with top-notch customer service. Among its many awards, the pub has two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence and, in both 2017 and this year, was named as an Estrella Damn top 50 Gastropub! Husband and wife team Paul and Donna Berry have been working in hospitality for more than 11 years in the heart of Devon, and both are talented, award-winning, industry–acclaimed chefs, having gained a reputation for creating some of the region’s tastiest dishes, while serving up the warmest of welcomes. Donna has always been passionate about good food and often used to dream about owning and running her own pub, so she pestered Paul to do it. They started out at The Quarryman’s Rest, but took on The Swan in 2011. Since, they haven’t once looked back! “I’m really lucky to be able to do the thing I love as a job, and on my days off you’ll still

find me in the kitchen. I can’t get enough of it! We close for food on Mondays, which allows us to recharge our batteries, but on these days I still spend my time inventing new dishes.” Donna’s big love is seafood and she tells us: “I get very, very excited when we get something different from our fish suppliers. I’m a bit like a kid in a candy shop when the delivery van doors open!” In January this year, the pub was named, for the second year running, as one of the country’s top 50 gastropubs at an industrywide awards ceremony in York. “We polled 28 this year and received a special award as the highest climber in the list, as in 2017 we were positioned just inside the top 50.” So, if you fancy sampling what one of the UK’s top 50 gastropubs has to offer, be sure to book a table at The Swan!

Full of beans

We speak to Murray from The Fresh Coffee Company about his family and business’ move to Devon.

M

urray tells us: “My wife and I, and our one-year old daughter Madi moved to Exeter from Surrery last September, bringing the business with us. The Fresh Coffee Company has been in operation in London and Surrey since 2014, steadily building a reputation for providing quality coffee and service to its customer base, including businesses from local delicatessens to national chains and all sorts in between.” “It all began when my business partner Marcel was working for Harrods, who would only serve Bristot coffee. His passion for coffee and the quality that Bristot delivered created an opportunity and he became the UK distributor for the Italian company, creating The Fresh Coffee Company in order to do so. Bristot are what we describe as a ‘boutique’ roaster, roasting to order so that everything is nice and fresh. They’ve been at it since 1919, so have an incredible network with the farms across central and South America, as well as India and Africa. They know a thing or two about selecting the right beans to keep the quality and flavour consistent. They’re part of the Sustainable Agriculture Network, and are acutely aware of the importance of the environment from which the beans are sourced. Ethical and traceable production is at the heart of their business.” The next piece of the puzzle, Murray tells us, is teaming up with SUNDAY-Collab – the creation of two surfers based in Hossegor, south west France. SUNDAY is a lifestyle brand with coffee at its core; the ‘Collab’ is the collaboration between likeminded people

who enjoy the surf, beach and art vibes of Hossegor. The coffee is roasted on their behalf at Bristot, using premium grade, rainforest alliance certified beans, boasting a beautifully smooth, rounded taste with no bitterness. Murray tells us: “We’re really excited to partner with The River Café Exe, 2017 winners of the Exeter Living awards and a business that shares our values for quality and sustainability.” “So, we are a small but perfectly formed coffee distributor based in Exeter, supplying high quality coffee with a story to tell. We provide everything from beans to machines, and everything in between. The only thing we don’t do is fresh milk!”

the city

Historic Exeter is a bustling city in the heart of the south west, with plenty of wonderful places to eat, drink, explore and shop.

E

xeter is a city that’s steeped in history. Situated on the river Exe, and the most south-westerly fortified Roman settlement on mainland Britain, the Devon city grew with the rise of the wool trade into the vibrant city and county town that it is today. There’s plenty to see and do, from soaking up the vast array of culture such as the castle ruin and medieval cathedral, to partaking in some retail therapy among the many shopping opportunities. There’s a wonderful juxtaposition of big name brands and quirky independent stores and modern buildings standing shoulder-to-shoulder with medieval structures overhanging the streets below, with narrow cobbled lanes revealing hidden treasures around every corner. You’ll find all the major high street brands you’d expect from a city (over 70 in fact) at Princesshay Shopping Centre, including an Apple Store, Cath Kidston, Gap, Zara and Topshop, amongst others. Centrally located near the cathedral, it’s a great place for meeting friends and grabbing a bite to eat, whether stopping for a quick coffee or sushi. The Guildhall Shopping Centre is home to yet more household brands, including Body Shop and WH Smith. You’ll also find a luxury spa, should you wish to rest and recuperate with a treatment. Queen St is a dining destination with food to suit every taste and budget, from

gourmet burgers and freshly made pizzas, to Scandi, Caribbean, Lebanese and Middle Eastern inspired cuisine. If you’re looking for something you won’t find on the high street, there’s an abundance of interesting and unusual shops in the West Quarter, including The Real McCoy, which stocks a huge collection of vintage and retro clothing. Music fans and budding guitarists must pay a visit to the music mecca, Mansons Guitar Shop – some of the biggest rock stars on the planet have called on its services, from Jimmy Page to Fleetwood Mac’s original frontman, Peter Green. The 600-year-old Exeter Cathedral is, in the current Dean’s own words, “one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere,” and it’s hard to disagree. The impressive vaulted ceiling and a fascinating 15th Century astronomical clock are worth the trip alone. As with any cathedral city, the cathedral quarter acts as a centrepiece to the city and creates a lively buzz around its many adjoining streets and lanes. The Cathedral Green is the ideal spot for a picnic in the summer, while in the winter it plays host to a fabulous Christmas Market, perfect for indulging in some yuletide treats and completing your last minute present shopping if you’re enjoying a festive break in the city or a nearby cottage.

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), a Victorian Gothic Revival building of local red sandstone, is reminiscent of a slightly smaller (yet no less grand) sibling of Kensington’s Natural History Museum. Home to an array of exhibits from ancient Egypt and other fascinating curiosities, including a life-sized elephant and giraffe, it’s free to visit and a captivating destination in the heart of the city. But it’s not just the city centre itself that draws people. Exeter Quayside is popular for its arts and crafts boutiques, as well as the outdoor/indoor activity centre, which offers kayaking, bike hire and Clip ‘n Climb – a fun and safe climbing experience for both children and grown-ups. You’ll also find the contemporary Spacex gallery. There are more places to eat here, including On the Waterfront, an eatery offering fantastic views over the quay. Whatever you’re looking for in a city break, you're bound to find it in Exeter.

LOCATION

Magdalen Road This unassuming strip of independent shops, cafés and restaurants is a must for any itinerary when it comes to exploring Exeter.

A

s we’ve highlighted in our featured guide, Exeter is a bustling city replete with independent boutiques and big brand shops, bistros and galleries. One of our favourite areas of the city is Magdalen Road. Located less than a mile from the city centre within the highly sought after area of St Leonards, it has a variety of shops including a baker, fishmonger, florist and a delicatessen. For a number of years, this well-loved street has also held an annual Christmas fair, where the road is closed to traffic and sees many of the local independent retailers offering their wares of gifts, food and drink among the festivities. Year round you’ll find a number of independent businesses, like Leela, where you’ll find ethical gifts for everyone, from bags, baskets, lights and lampshades, to eco-friendly clothes and jewellery. Then there’s Bon Goût Delicatessen, delivering delicious, fresh food straight to your door, as well as offering business and private catering. You’ll also find that the team’s luxury hampers, crammed full of seasonal produce, make the perfect gift! For those who love to cook using only the freshest produce, Gibson’s Plaice

Fishmongers sources the freshest fish, all bought daily from the world famous Brixham Fish Market. Or, if you want to grab a bite on the go, you’ll be spoiled for choice with proper coffee available at Café Catalan, and the finest sandwiches, baguettes, wraps, salad boxes and jacket potatoes on offer at The Sandwiched Inn. Finally, for those of you who are partial to a quality bottle of wine, Smith’s Wine Shop, which also serves a mid-week supper, has a fine selection of casks sourced from all over the world, with wines available for every budget. The mid-week supper is matched with three different wines at three differing price points, and is served down the middle of a long table, where everybody gathers round and tucks in, a fantastic experience! So, next time you’re in Exeter, whether you’re enjoying a well-earned city break or are there on business, be sure to make your way to Magdalen Road and explore one of Exeter’s most independent streets.

What do you love most about playing rugby for the Chiefs? “The closeness of the team, they’re like a big extended family. I love the everyday stuff – the training, the banter. We’re all pretty close and hang out, that’s probably the biggest thing I love about it.”

What do you love most about Devon? “I love going to the beach in the evening. Devon has got everything – really good town centre, bars, restaurants. There are so many places you can access… we like going on day trips, anywhere we can explore. There’s so much to do, and the summer – it’s great!”

If you weren’t a rugby player, what do you think you would be? “If you asked me seven years ago I’d have said a P.E teacher – yeah, I’ve always loved sport, I’ll go with that!”

Most important question last… How should you eat a scone? Jam or Cream first? “Cream first, no doubt 100%, hahaha!”

Favourite restaurant? “Jack in the Green and The River Exe Café…”

Favourite place to visit in Devon? “Salcombe – I like Garra Rock on a nice sunny day.”

How do you unwind in your time out of training or playing? “I like exploring Devon, or going to play golf with the other Chief lads. There are loads of good golf courses around.”

ake a trip to Tiverton’s independent quarter of Gold Street, where you’ll find a treat nestled among the independent boutiques and cafés. Lantic Gallery is an established business that’s been trading in Tiverton for more than 15 years, however in autumn 2016 a number of exciting changes took place, including a change in ownership as Lizzie Hill took the reins. Having worked at the gallery for several years already, Lizzie knew the business inside and out, and has used her first 18 months at the helm to really put her mark on the establishment. After re-branding, restocking and remodeling, while maintaining the original Lantic charm, the gallery is now a modern, fresh space, showcasing paintings, prints, ceramics and jewellery by artists across the south west. The gallery also stocks contemporary design-led products, as well as exquisite greetings cards and gift wrap. So, whether you simply need to pick up a beautiful birthday card for a friend, or are searching for the painting of your dreams, Lantic Gallery should be your first port of call. After completing a degree in Illustration at Bath Spa University and working as a commercial artist, Lizzie has the eye, confidence and flair that’s necessary to source unique art and gifts that complement one another beautifully. “The gallery is a glimmer of inspiration on the high street, providing the customer with an inviting space where they know they can always find something special and unique,” Lizzie explains. “I feel it’s important to support UK makers and I love working with individual artists and small businesses. We’re friends with our customers, artists and suppliers, keeping alive the traditional way of retailing. We visit studios, potteries and exhibitions, sourcing work from start to finish. We love seeing where the artist works and picking out the perfect items to showcase in Lantic.” Lizzie and her husband Chris moved from Bath to Chris’ home village in Devon, and the gallery has been a huge success, one they intend to build on and enjoy for years to come.

DISCOVER MORE “This is a lovely, bright and welcoming gallery, full of specially chosen art, ceramics, jewellery and more. There’s a real feeling of class about the gifts stocked. A great addition to the Devon art scene.” Just one of the gallery’s many testimonials, from customer Sarah Woolfenden.

new exhibition featuring the work of abstract artist Trevor Bell opens in the Peninsula Arts Gallery at the University of Plymouth on 16th April. ‘Trevor Bell: Trans-Form’ is the final exhibition Bell worked on before sadly passing away in November last year. It features a selection of 11 monumental paintings from the 1990s and 2000s alongside a brand new sound score composed by Jamie Mills. The exhibition is a partnership between Peninsula Arts and The Box, Plymouth. Curated by Joseph Clarke, director of the Anima-Mundi gallery in St Ives, it will remain on display until 26th May. Described as ‘the last of the St Ives modernists’, Bell was born in Leeds before moving to St Ives, Cornwall in 1955. His presence there, along with the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon gave British Art an international reputation. When Bell held his first solo exhibition in London in 1958, Patrick Heron described him as ‘the best non-figurative painter’ of

his generation. Fellowships, scholarships, commissions and awards followed. He also spent 20 years working in America as a Professor at Florida State University. “Showing an exhibition of work by Trevor Bell is a long-held ambition for Plymouth,” says CEO for The Box, Paul Brookes. “His large-scale intense colour works will provide visitors to the Peninsula Arts gallery with an amazingly visual experience. We’re deeply sorry that he won’t be able to see the exhibition for himself, but hope it will be a fitting tribute to him, showing that the vibrancy and energy of his work lives on.” A series of events inspired by the exhibition will also take place during April and May, including talks, gallery tours, family activities, yoga sessions and a newly commissioned dance co-choreographed and performed by Sarah Fairhall and Lois Taylor. Open between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays), and 11am until 4pm on Saturday, admission to the gallery is free, so be sure to take a look around next time you’re in Plymouth.

THE CALL

a e s e h of t We take a look at The Mercy, the story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst who took on the infamous 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race.

ew film The Mercy, released early this year, tells the true and ultimately tragic story of amateur weekend sailor and businessman Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth) as he gambles everything to compete in the 1968 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. In the hope of becoming the first person to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe without stopping, Donald leaves his wife Clare (Rachel Weisz) and their children behind to embark on his vessel named the Teignmouth Electron. The film gives a fascinating insight into the struggles Crowhurst grappled with – one of the most enigmatic tales of recent times. When his business, Electron Utilisation, runs into financial trouble, Crowhurst is introduced to Taunton businessman, Stanley Best, who agrees to back Donald’s company and eventually sponsors his attempt to sail around the globe, a process that involves having a trimaran specially made to Crowhurst’s own specification.

As Donald prepares for the race – overseeing the building of the Teignmouth Electron – many around him believe that he’ll ‘snap out of it’, that he’ll never actually go through with the race – after all, he’s just an amateur weekend sailor who finds occasional solace on his small 20-foot boat, Pot of Gold. In fact, Rachel Weisz, who plays Donald’s wife, says: “I think Donald had a lot of madcap ideas which often didn’t get carried out, so at first when Clare hears he’s going to enter this race, it’s such a preposterous idea to her, because he’s not a professional sailor.” But as you become more immersed in the film, you start to realise that Donald Crowhurst isn’t going to let this one go, despite his obvious wavering as he approaches the journey’s beginning. When eventually he climbs aboard his vessel, Colin Firth’s portrayal really comes into its own, showing Crowhurst’s barely concealed dismay as he finds the Teignmouth Electron in a woefully unprepared state, attempting to keep a stiff upper lip for the sake of his onlooking family.

é INSET Colin Firth as Donald Crowhurst ì ABOVE Teignmouth è RIGHT Crowhurst's 20 foot boat, Pot of Gold – a far cry from the ill-fated Teignmouth Electron

The film is beautiful to watch, with rolling shots of Teignmouth that show just how beautiful a location it is, one that’s typical of a town so close to the English Riviera. Sweeping aerials of Crowhurst’s vessel show it ploughing through the Atlantic, and there are times when you really believe he’s going to do it. But things soon start to go wrong as you watch the protagonist come to terms with the fact that he simply cannot complete the voyage; as you witness him slowly but surely show signs of mental illness, cemented when a scene depicts him having a conversation through an unplugged telephone. There’s a frustrating sense of pride – that he must not let his family down – that comes out naturally from Colin Firth’s portrayal; and on the other end of the ordeal, Rachel Weisz’s depiction of Clare Crowhurst shows with great prowess how the real-life Clare managed to keep her head up, despite the obvious danger her husband was putting himself in.

You get the feeling that she understands why Donald is embarking on such a mission – that she wants to shake him and talk him out of it, but she won’t because she knows what it means to him. Indeed, Donald's defining line, “I am going because I would have no peace if I stayed,” seems to resonate throughout the rest of the film. The Mercy has really served to put Teignmouth back on the map, just as Crowhurst did himself as he spent several weeks in the town preparing for his departure, holding press conferences, making repairs to his boat and, eventually, climbing down the ladder to the harbour and being ferried to his awaiting vessel. On the location, Colin Firth says: “The people [of Teignmouth] were really very lovely. We were made to feel extremely welcome. It’s not convenient to have a film crew in your town, but there was an awful lot of affection for Donald Crowhurst and for this story.”

DID YOU KNOW? Robin Knox-Johnston was the only one of nine entrants to complete the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. Bernard Moitessier, who rejected the philosophy behind a commercial competition, abandoned the race while in a position to win, instead continuing to sail for sailing’s sake. He eventually circled the globe one and a half times!

Embrace indoor/outdoor living with the chic new range of homewares from local company, Kernow Metals.

healthy trend is spreading across the UK, encouraging people to embrace the indoor/ outdoor living enjoyed by many in warmer climates across the world. Local designers and outdoor heating suppliers are embracing this enthusiasm with everything from huge shelving units and outdoor fireplaces to entire outdoor kitchens being designed into the humble British home and garden. If anywhere in the UK is suited for this style of living, bringing the outside in and vice versa, then it is the south west, with miles of stunning coastline and countryside right on our doorsteps. One local company enjoying this growing trend is Kernow Metals in Wadebridge where the talented craftspeople have created all sorts of exciting outdoor furniture including galvanised steel dining tables, benches and fire pits. This is an interesting new direction for Kernow Metals which has been established for over 20 years and has made its name fabricating bespoke garden gates, rails, staircases and fires. Jamie from Kernow Metals explains: “We are working on a number of exciting projects for private clients from fireplaces that cover entire walls to spiral staircases. We wanted our bespoke craftsmanship to be available to a wider audience, hence the creation of our indoor/outdoor furniture range.” We particularly love the stylish

boot racks, ideal for drying and storing your boots following a day exploring the coast, and the perfect addition to any holiday home. We are also big fans of the chic hooped log stores, so you can rest assured that you’re well stocked for those chillier evenings getting cosy around the fire, while making a style statement at the same time! Kernow Metals recently joined forces with Kernow Fires, another Wadebridge based company with a reputation for attention to detail and helping to enhance some of the south west’s most beautiful homes. Together they combine their extensive expertise and wealth of knowledge to provide a comprehensive service for home improvements and installations, proving the age-old belief that great things happen when great talents pull together! To see more of the beautiful creations and bespoke commissions from the Kernow Metals team, head over to the company’s website and visit the gallery section. If you like what you see, and have a specific project in mind, call Dave and Jamie, to discuss your own outdoor or indoor living project.

s part of the IES group of schools, many of the pupils at St John’s have studied for half a term or longer at one of its sister schools in South Africa, Florida, Hungary, Spain or Italy and have taken part in the annual interschool competitions which, in recent years, have taken place in Ecuador, Costa Rica and Guadalajara! Pupils at St John’s have the opportunity to be able to experience different communities and cultures, further enriching their school education and giving them a true international outlook. As well as its worldwide connections, the school has an outstanding academic record, being placed 15th nationally in the Sunday Times Parent Power Guide and continuing that record in 2017 with 100% of pupils achieving over five GCSE qualifications at A* to C. Now that’s something to shout about! The school is local and independent, providing an all-through education for boys and girls aged two and up. It offers a broad curriculum with a strong emphasis on bringing out the very best in its 200 day-students and 50 boarders, all from more than 12 different countries. St John’s has a rich tradition and a proud heritage, situated on the same site, overlooking the sea at Sidmouth since 1914. As well as its proud past, the school also has a vibrant and exciting future, and the staff look forward to sharing it with you.

EDUCATION They invite parents and pupils to come in during the school day to allow them time to have meaningful discussions about your son or daughter, as opposed to holding the regular ‘open mornings’. What’s more, the school also holds an annual Amaze Me Day, Saturday 9th June, for any local children from nursery to Year 9. This is a great opportunity for local children to experience the facilities and get involved in some fantastic activities including pool kayaking, balance biking, dance, drama, coding and cooking. There are also workshops in which parents can join: Paediatric First Aid and Nutrition for children. During the summer, the school also runs a highly successful summer programme in which a range of activity based day camp options are offered. St John’s welcomes local pupils to the school, and offers local fees to those living within 15 miles of the school postcode, as defined by Google Maps. It also encourages students from their very first day to travel far beyond the realms of locality, setting them up for a lifetime of adventure.
