to the May issue of Devon
Where have those four weeks gone? It only feels like yesterday that we were pressing print on the inaugural copy of Devon Living and here we are now ready to do the same with issue two! We are very excited to be introducing some new sections to the magazine this month. For those loo ing to buy a house in the county, you will find a selection of stunning homes that are currently on the market featured in our property section (from page 21). For art enthusiasts, our gallery section ‘On Display’ (page 37) showcases local artists and art galleries across Devon and for foodie lovers you can catch up on all things culinary in our Gourmet Gossip pages (55 to 57) which are packed full of food and drink news from around the south west. Last month saw temperatures soar and with the arrival of some long sunny days Devon gardens and hedgerows have been blooming. We took full advantage of the arrival of spring and visited some of Devon’s most beautiful gardens. From the glorious 60 acres at Bicton Park to the more intimate s ace at roomhill cul ture ardens you will find something for every taste in our cover feature from page 12. Dan Warden, one of our media assistants, went out and about to discover more about the Dartington Dairy and Old Parsonage Farm, a family business based on the Dartington Estate (page 58) while we took in the sites and sounds of Plymouth, the city by the sea, perfect for a weekend break (page 72). We have a host of interior inspiration (from page 26) and some wonderful places to stay if you are visiting the south west (from page 46). Until next time... happy reading!

The view from Devon...
“This photo was taken down at Exmouth seafront one evening in March. I chose to go Exmouth that evening because it provides a great view of the sun setting this time of year and can produce beautiful colours if there is a bit of cloud about. It’s also a good excuse to grab a Krispies fish and chips on the way home! “I love living in Devon, it has so many stunning places to visit, especially along the coasts and with spring finally with us it’s a great time to get out, explore and see Devon at its best.” James Maloney, Instagram See more of James’ work on page 80

The road to recovery Regain Recovery is a rehabilitation centre in the heart of north Devon, on six acres of land, with a real sense of peace and tranquillity. Founder erri reedon tells us y vision was to create a safe, warm, friendly environment where individuals struggling with substance use could access treatment and recover – somewhere I’d be happy to go for treatment myself. I was determined to provide care and support for partners and loved ones too.”
In the last year alone, over 40 people have successfully completed the programme. Gerri’s aim is to empower people approaching recovery to enable them to help themselves, to learn as much as possible about substance use and the associated underlying issues.
Visitors can also enjoy homemade scones and scrumptious Devon cream teas, summer season entertainment in the marquee and all-weather family fun in the soft-play indoor and outdoor play areas. There’s even crazy golf on site, and much more to keep everybody entertained, including the wonderfully detailed PECO Model Railway Exhibition and Model Shop. GARDEN We embrace nature at its best with an amble through some of Devon’s most beautiful gardens, great and small.
W
ell, it’s probably fair to say that spring took its time to turn up this year. When we would normally be welcoming in the first signs of blossom, ac ing away the hats and scarves, we instead found ourselves wrapping up warm and building snowmen. But good things come to those who wait, and a Devon garden in springtime is certainly one of those things. Nothing beats the sound of birdsong and scent of blossom, fresh air filling your lungs as you ta e in the surrounding countryside. What really impresses in Devon is the sheer variety of gardens to visit, from lush
subtropical coastal paradises, to traditional walled gardens tucked away in the heart of the countryside; formal, beautifully manicured gardens to wild woodland walks. Devon really does have it all. Oh, and you’ll probably enjoy a good cream tea for measure too! Of course, gardens are fantastic locations for family days out, with everything you could need to enjoy yourselves all in one place, usually catering well for young families, and often with various activities and events organised throughout the year. So, over the following pages, we provide just a small taster of the vast offering that awaits your arrival.

Bicton Park
There’s a growing trend for combining natural and manmade materials in outdoor spaces to dramatic effect in the form of sculpture gardens, often including large-scale metallic and angular sculptures that provide a stark counterpoint to the more uid and irregular foliage. ne example that has mastered this art is the Broomhill Sculpture Gardens in Muddiford, just inland from the north coast beaches at Croyde and Saunton Sands. The Broomhill team tell us: “Where art and culture meet in magical surroundings… discover the largest private collection of sculpture in the south west at Broomhill. We have over 300 fascinating sculptures, including the National Sculpture Prize competition, on display, set in 12 acres of beautiful woodland gardens bound by Bradiford river. Visitors can also enjoy a bite to eat: whether you fancy a cream tea or cake, tapas or a three-course lunch or dinner – we have plenty to choose from.” If you really want to see a garden that offers a truly unique experience, then make sure you put a visit to Broomhill on your to-do list. www.broomhillart.co.uk
As far as gardens go, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens are particularly impressive. Set across over 60 acres, this horticultural gem in the Otter Valley near Exeter, in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers some of “the most beautiful of Britain’s world–renowned historic gardens.” Here, according to the Bicton Park team, you can expect “soft sweeping lawns, elegant water features, fragrant English borders and formal gardens. Take a tranquil walk and meander through the arboretum among some of the most majestic trees in the country including 18 designated champions of their kind in the British Isles.” Bicton’s crowning glory is the resplendent Palm House, a grand, futuristic bubble-shaped ictorian greenhouse filled with lush e otic plants, predating the Eden Project by nearly two centuries. Built in 1825, and featuring around 18,000 individual panes of glass, it precedes the Palm House at Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens by around 20 years. There’s plenty more to discover, from the temperate and tropical houses and the little house of shells, to the romantic Hermitage, the secret garden, the lake, streams and woodlands, and the Countryside Museum. Children will love the nature trail, exploring the miniature village, traversing the large climbing camp, having a go at mini golf, or letting off steam in the indoor play centre. Complete the day with a bite to eat in the Orangery Restaurant, soaking up the views of the Italian Garden. www.bictongardens.co.uk

The gardens in full bloom at RHS Rosemoor
RHS Garden Rosemoor
The Royal Horticultural Society has some lofty ambitions: “We want to enrich everyone’s life through plants and make the UK a greener, more beautiful place.” It’s a heart-warming sentiment, and you can witness its effects in action at RHS Garden Rosemoor, the only one of RHS’s four gardens of the UK found in the south west. Richard Mulford tells us more about this garden for all seasons. “Rosemoor is an enchanting garden nestled in the beautiful Torridge Valley located between Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. Surrounded by woodland, it’s rich in variety throughout every season and features inspiring planting displays enhanced by the natural beauty of north Devon. These include the largest rose gardens in the south west, the stunning Hot Garden, a Devon Cottage Garden, lake and stream, fruit and vegetable garden, natural ower meadows and bluebell-carpeted woodlands.” Rosemoor is particularly family friendly, with trails, play areas, garden themed art and craft workshops, and even opportunities to exercise your green fingers by sowing and growing along with the gardening team. Richard tells us: “The garden is an inspirational backdrop for sculpture exhibitions, craft and antique fairs

ou ll find he arden ouse in uc land Monachorum, just outside Yelverton. This delightful sanctuary, maintained and developed by The Fortescue Garden Trust, has caught the eye of many a gardener, including BBC presenter Toby Buckland, who has commented: “It’s a plantsman’s paradise – I love it!” Jo Shinner, one of the team, tells us about more about the garden’s lasting appeal. “This inspiring garden on the western edge of Dartmoor covers ten acres and showcases gardening at its best. olour and scent fill the garden and throughout the seasons there is always ‘show-stopping’ design to enjoy. Since the 1940s it has been synonymous with colour, unusual plants and excellent standards of horticulture.” The garden is divided into several distinct zones, providing visitors the chance to stop and linger, taking in the surroundings. These include the Summer Garden, planted in a ‘naturalistic style’ and the Cottage Garden, bursting with wild owers. his ower filled garden is world famous,” says Jo, “and the view to St Andrew's Church in Buckland Monachorum is iconic.”
The Acer Glade is another highlight, which morphs and changes colour with the seasons. Of the historic Walled Garden and Terraces, Jo tells us: “A medieval tower connects the lower and mid terraces and is the perfect backdrop for climbing plants.” The old barn was recently re-thatched, providing the perfect ‘English country garden’ backdrop. Completed by the Quarry Garden, Jubilee Arboretum – planted to commemorate the Golden Jubilee in 2011 – and lake, plenty to keep everyone enthralled, whether avid garden enthusiast or simply those who enjoy the great outdoors. www.thegardenhouse.org.uk
Knightshayes
As you enter the walled garden of Knightshayes, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve breached the inner walls of a great Gothic fortress. High, thick and imposing stone walls are adjoined by large, theatrical turrets, echoing the Victorian grandeur of the main house itself. But thankfully, rather than hostile medieval soldiers yielding weaponry, you’re met with legions of colourful plants and vegetables at every turn – and perhaps the odd gardener with a trowel. Completed in 1876, like so many walled gardens, it fell into gradual disrepair with the two world wars and ensuing years, even at one point becoming an over ow car ar . ut following a large-scale restoration project, it has been largely returned to its former glory, with plans afoot to reinstate one of the Victorian glasshouses. With today’s emphasis on reducing food miles and embracing more organic farming methods, it is once again taking its rightful spotlight, and is as fine an e am le of a ictorian walled garden as you re li ely to find. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/knightshayes

Overbeck’s makes the most of its sheltered south coast microclimate to stock a range of exotic and rare plants from distant lands, as far and wide as Australia and New Zealand. Overbeck’s takes its name from previous owner Otto Overbeck, who bought the house in 1928 and continued to enhance the existing gardens with additional exotic plants from around the world. Otto himself was as fascinating as the gardens he helped to create, an accomplished scientist and inventor. Among his many achievements are a claim to the invention of Marmite (recognising the value of a waste by-product of the brewing process), and the creation of the ‘electrical rejuvenator’ an interesting device, which purported to be able to reverse the aging process using electrical probes. Whilst trying out this strange looking contraption firsthand doesn t seem too a ealing to us, there’s a simpler way of winding back the clocks – simply by taking a tour of the stunning gardens and admiring the panoramic estuary views. Overbeck’s really is a little slice of heaven. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/overbecks

Greenway
Author Agatha Christie knew a thing about drama and there’s plenty to witness at Greenway, her home in the country, perched on the eastern bank of river Dart, just upriver from Dartmouth and not far from Brixham. Those who cherish hristie s literary out ut will find much of interest among the displays and memorabilia inside the house. But the grounds are equally enthralling for the horticultural enthusiast too. Greenway is particularly known for its important Camellia collection, as highlighted by its recent ‘Garden of Excellence’ accreditation awarded by the International Camellia Society, placing Greenway among just six other gardens with this prestigious status in the UK. Colin Clark, Senior Gardener at Greenway, says: “Being recognised pays tribute to the garden’s history and opens up access to specialists in the field which will hel us to continue building the collection and developing the garden.” Colin continues: “Camellias have been associated with Greenway since, at least, the 1830s and every new owner has added to the collection over the generations. Some of those, such as the Bolitho and Williams families, were highly respected plantsmen of their day. JC Williams lived at Greenway from 1919 to 1937, before Agatha Christie and her husband Max Mallowan bought the property to use as their holiday home, and the Camellia x williamsii cultivar was named after him.” www.nationaltrust.org.uk/greenway

In safe hands When you commission Oltco to complete a flooring project, you can always be sure of both quality and reliability.
W
hen it comes to employing contractors to carry out work, the two big considerations at the forefront of most people’s minds are quality and reliability. You need to be able to put your full trust in them, especially when you’re not the expert yourself. So when we met Oltco Directors Tom Stringer and John Pearce a few months back it was so refreshing to witness a company that does things properly, and has got the balance just right. Clearly they genuinely love what they do, and want to get the best results for clients every time, focussing equally on quality and reliability. This, in itself, hinges on two key
factors: the products and the service. Starting with the products, Oltco’s resin bound ooring is the erfect solution for a range of outdoor and indoor situations, from driveways, paths, car parks, sun terraces and balconies, even swimming pools. For a start, it is incredibly hardwearing, it’s UV stable, it’s easy to clean, and it’s very functional too. Being porous it doesn’t puddle, it’s extremely low maintenance and SUDs compliant, meaning there is no need for planning in many circumstances. What’s more it looks great a high end finish to com lement the high end performance.
A resin-bound surface creates the perfect surround for a contemporary pool

Resin-bound gravel looks beautiful on drives, balconies and pathways – and it’s extremely durable and low maintenance
But great products are futile without great service to match, something that Tom and John understand so well. “We want to feel good about the work we do and the decisions we make.” An unusual approach for a driveway company but one that has seen them go from a resin ooring contractor to a leading installer of resin bound gravel driveways in the south west and beyond. They genuinely want you to get as much enjoyment and pleasure out of your new driveway or paving as they get from doing a good job. They continue: “At Oltco, we strive to deliver the absolute best quality and service to our customers. We adhere wholeheartedly to the ethos of establishing lasting relationships with our customers by exceeding their expectations and gaining their trust through exceptional products, performance and aftercare.” Their dedication to providing peace of mind means that they offer a 20-year guarantee on all their resin bound gravel. Indeed, just as the Oltco team are meticulous about the ob and finish itself, so they are meticulous in the aftercare, and building lasting client relationships. Lewinnick Lodge is just one of the many hotels, bars and cafés that Oltco has helped to transform with its resin ooring, both locally
and further afield. ewinnic s anager, an Trotter, tells us: “It was a great opportunity to collaborate with some of our favourite craftspeople and independent companies in the south west. But we didn’t just choose Oltco because they are local; we chose them because they are the best, and great people to work with.” o, if it s eace of mind and a erfect finish that you’re looking for, why not join Oltco’s many satisfied customers, and let the team transform your outdoor space – whether a driveway, patio or balcony – into one that you truly love.

WHAT A SHOW! We reflect on the success of this year’s Southwest Home & Garden Show and look forward to what’s to come in the future.
I
WORDS BY
BETHANY ALLEN
f you’re looking to gain some inspiration for home or garden improvements, then make sure you save the date for The Southwest Home & Garden show taking place next year on the 6th and 7th April. This year’s show saw a huge amount of visitors and businesses alike descend upon Westpoint Arena in Exeter – which isn’t surprising, as the show is the region’s leading home and garden event. The organisers are dedicated to bringing together a wide range of businesses that specialise in interiors, gardens, renewables, self-build and lifestyle products. Their aim is for the show to be a chance for you to discover the right company to help with whatever your project happens to be, or to simply provide expert advice through the seminars and talks that are free to listen in to as part of the event.

A couple of companies close to home that were featured at the show this year were Mark Piper Furniture and Riverfood Organics. Mark Piper Furniture specialises in designing and making bespoke ieces of furniture. hether it s a finely crafted kitchen, or a handmade piece of freestanding furniture that’s tailored to your ersonal s ecifications ar s aim is to produce furniture to the highest possible standard. Riverfood Organics is setting the pace for the creation and distribution of quality organic veg boxes and recipe inspiration – perfect for those who want to step away from the plastic packaging that dominates supermarkets, and delve into a cardboard bo filled with organic goodness from both the UK and abroad. These are but two examples of the kind of companies that are represented at the show along with a multitude of others with different specialities. The quality food and drinks market and café keep you going as you explore, giving you the opportunity to sit down over a cold drink and have a good chat about all the different stalls and seminar discussions taking place. There’s also the added bonus of being able to sample some of the finest local artisan food and drin including: local gins, craft ales, spices, organic veg boxes and more. The homewares and interiors market displays striking interior design options where you can discover quality blankets, art, ceramics, rugs, furniture and a host of other unique items. As lovely as the bathrooms and kitchens are, it takes a bit more time to get them set up in your home than it will to pick up the ceramics set that you’ve been hankering after! f you ve got green fingers, then be prepared to delve into all things garden as the show presents garden nurseries, garden hand tools and wildlife habitats. So, you can take home plants to spruce up your garden and perhaps even be inspired to create a feature that you haven’t thought of before. Plus, the wide range of quality
outbuildings and furniture will be hard to resist, especially the luxury hot tubs that will transform any garden into a tranquil escape. The show is fast becoming the premier home and garden event in the region and following the success of this year’s show, we’re already looking forward to what next year will bring. With 140 exhibitors and free seminars on trending topics, products and ideas, it really is the place to go if you want to find out about all things home and garden. This year saw the show receive over 4,000 visitors, which will only increase next year as more businesses are set to get involved on the back of this years success. With an onsite café, unlimited free parking, and free entry if you pre-register, it really is a great event to mark on the calendar for next year!

Discover why a trip to Kingsbridge in the South Hams is not complete without a visit to Mayne Gallery.
ayne Gallery is a place to discover art in its widest forms; painting, ceramics, sculpture and, in one of its youngest artists – Sophie Gregson, an innovative and exciting use of glass. Sophie, in her own way, carries on the tradition of landscape art. The looking and the seeing, the searching for objects to incorporate in the interpretations of what she discovers. This passion and the seeking out of the une ected a momentary ash of light on the water; the curve on a path; the way a cloud has oated across the s y and made its eeting statement is what has been fascinating artists throughout the centuries. From John Constable to one of Mayne Gallery’s most popular and collectable artists – John Donaldson. One only has to gaze into John’s rich works of art and get a sense of the love of the scene. His acute sense of self expression is entirely evident in the loose and energetic brush strokes that capture so much, with such little ec s and in ections of paint on the canvas. And this desire to bring ‘honest’ art that is intensely varied in its form, subject matter and physical matter, is certainly what motivates
Jane Price, the owner and the primary art searcher, for over 21 years now – something in itself to be celebrated. Jane is always on the look out for bourgeoning talent, to see the new and the fresh sitting alongside the accomplished and the more experienced artists showcased at Mayne. Jane’s passion has seen many artists being part of the Mayne set for many years; nurtured and supported as they develop their art. A prime example of this relationship approach and how time invested can allow significant success to come to fruition is James Bonstow; an artist that ane has cham ioned since first discovering him in 2012, believing in his abilities and remarkable talent, with the recent collection of James’ work selling out at the Battersea Art Fair this year. If you are looking for some inspiring time spent with art, make sure you pay them visit the next time you’re in Kingsbridge – we are sure you will find it time well s ent.

Well, say ahoy there to the Johanna Lucretia, a beautifully preserved tall ship that’s running long weekend taster trips around the coast this summer. A founder vessel of the new VentureSail classic sailing holidays agency, the two-masted topsail schooner is the pride and joy of skipper Rodger Barton, who loves nothing more than introducing newbie seagoers and veterans alike to the joys of tall ship sailing. Lend a hand with raising a sail, take the helm for a nautical mile or two, or simply sit on deck with a mug of tea and watch the stunning coast ass by. all in on traditional fishing villages, secluded coves and oldar s filming locations, mustering with crew and guests at the end of each day to swap notes and enjoy some homecooked food. LETTING WITH
THE EXPERTS We catch up with Blueriver Cottages, experts when it comes to holidays in south Devon.
B
ased in south Devon and part of the Original Cottages brand, Blueriver Cottages is an authority when it comes to holiday lets in this beautiful part of Devon. Indeed, over the last year alone Blueriver added 20 new properties to its already-impressive portfolio of more than 200, meaning this local agency now boasts its greatest selection of self-catering accommodation to date! ith o ces in alcombe, artmouth, Torquay and Kingsbridge, the team really are experts when it comes to this beautiful part of the West Country, especially the main locations li e alcombe, artmouth and Torquay. What’s more, as a trusted brand, each year they welcome back literally thousands of regular visitors who love to stay in the area, aiming to offer them the greatest selection of high-quality holiday cottages. A key factor in Blueriver’s success is certainly its backing by a much larger company – Original Cottages. To Blueriver’s property owners, this means a much stronger, broader promotion than a local agent would normally be able to offer and ultimately, that means more bookings and more return on investment! However hands-on (or off) you want to be when it comes to your property, Blueriver can accommodate, making it much easier for you to market your property, taking bookings and payments on your behalf.
Indeed, they can do as much or as little to aid the running of your investment as you need, whether you want them to handle changeovers and housekeeping, or manage the property completely – it’s entirely up to you! Interested to learn more about the rewards of letting out your property, we speak with Portfolio Development Manager at Blueriver, Melanie Toms, who tells us: “As well as bringing extra income, owners who act as ‘hosts’, getting actively involved in the ro erty s management, find that they really enjoy helping holidaymakers enjoy the best of our beautiful area. These owners also tend to find their hard wor doesn t go unnoticed, and properties that are well loved and cared for will often see the same visitors returning year after year! “It’s something that we encourage too. After all, developing long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationshi s with our owners is something that has enabled us to ourish as a business and ee s our customers coming back.”

ever after HAPPILY
We catch up with Nicola Evans, owner of Ever After – the Dartmoor Wedding Venue, helping to make couples’ dreams come true.
How did Ever After get started? “My husband Steven and I started the business after we got married here ourselves in 2012. The caterer for our wedding suggested it to us on our wedding day and although that wasn’t the ideal day to start a new business venture, the seed was sown.”
Where are you located? “The venue (which is also our home) is a 46-
acre private estate on Dartmoor, bordering Dartmoor National Park. Most of the land is woodland and is a ite of ecial cientific Interest (SSSI). The river Walkham runs through the garden and is a major attraction in the gardens, which have been landscaped over the last ten years to produce a stunning garden. The venue is licensed by Devon County Council for weddings so couples can get legally married here.”

A truly romantic getaway, and the perfect location to host your special day
Did you have an existing connection with Devon? “Although I worked in London for 18 years, I was born in Exeter, my parents married and lived there and both sides of my family have been from the West Country for many generations. Devon seems to be a place people can’t help but come home to.”
What kind of weddings do you offer? “We offer two types of weddings. From May to September, we offer summer weddings for up to 120 guests and in the winter (October through to April) we offer elopement weddings for a maximum of eight guests. For the elopement weddings, we offer a complete package of photography, bouquet and buttonhole, champagne, canapés, three-course meal cooked on site and a tiny wedding cake. Summer wedding couples are free to use their own suppliers except for our caterer, which is the only supplier we insist on. Wedding food is hugely important and allowing only one caterer enables us to keep control of the quality – venues are judged by the food. Even if the caterer is nothing to do with the venue, guests don’t know that!”
Where do most of your couples come from? “Most of our summer wedding couples come from outside Devon, in particular London and the Home Counties. Our elopement couples come from all over the country which is great for us as there are so few places that offer exclusive use for tiny weddings. Couples often have a family connection with Devon; maybe they lived or holidayed here, sometimes they’re just looking for a little slice of Devon heaven for their wedding.”
How would you describe your ‘style’ or unique selling point? “Almost everyone who comes here says, ‘wow, we’ve never seen anything like this!’ It’s a perfect setting for an outdoor wedding with no worries about the weather. I describe
our style variously as ‘rustic luxe’ or ‘modern rustic’. The venue is modern with stacks of elegance and style – there’s no need to sacrifice the glam ust because you re in the country! For elopements, one of our main USPs is exclusive use of the entire venue for two nights, even if it’s just the couple themselves.”
What do you enjoy about the business and why? “Steven and I love sharing our home with our couples and their families and friends. We feel blessed to live in this special place and sharing it enhances living here for us. There are some une ected benefits too such as the garden always having to be in good order because it’s always on show!”
Do you hold any other kinds of events at the venue? “We only hire the venue for weddings, we don’t do any other events, indoor or outdoor except for an annual pop-up opera which we hold on a week day evening in June or July which is a ticket-only event open to the public.”
What are you most proud of? “The fact that so many of couples stay in touch with us over the years, let us know how they’re getting on, when they have a new addition to the family and tell us they feel a special connection to this place. We feel humbled by the fact so many people carry our home in their memories for the rest of their lives.”

Agnes Arber lived botanics. From her work, we wanted to create a fitting tribute. A convergence of nine herbs and fruits, distilled together in the same pot. We meet Jon Perkin, who tells us all about his family business running Dartington Dairy and Old Parsonage Farm on the historic Dartington Estate.
H
aving moved to Cumbria in the early 90s for ten years, before managing an organic estate in iltshire for a further five, when Dartington Estate began accepting applications for tenders on its core 500 acres of farmland, Jon Perkin, along with his wife Lynne, knew it was time to go back to his roots. Lynne was born on a smallholding in Aldershot and grew up working on farms, where she learnt to break horses for livestock handling, and Jon has been farming for most of his working life. “I did move into other lines of work, but I always came back to farming.” Jon was born and raised on a dairy farm in West Devon, a farm that’s been in his family for more than 600 years.
LEFT Jon’s a busy man, tending to the cattle and goats, as well as running deliveries around Devon

Earlier in his career, Jon travelled and farmed in a number of different locations around the UK and Europe, including Greece, where he learned all about milking sheep and goats. Between them, this hardwor ing cou le has firmly established not just one, but two lucrative businesses since taking over Old Parsonage Farm. “Our core business is the farm and land, plus our livestock, all of which is managed to organic standards, but Dartington Dairy is the one that’s enabled us to take control of our own destiny,” Jon explains. Indeed, their ice cream, mil and efir otherwise nown as ‘the cultured milk drink’), as well as being available to visitors of the farm, can be found in more than 45 stockists around Devon. So what lies at the core of this growing enterprise? Jon tells us: “It’s all about offering the public a positive, educational experience that teaches them about farming. We try and educate people of all ages and backgrounds so that they can make betterinformed decisions about where their food comes from. We’re so disjointed from our food these days, so we want to help people reconnect with the benefits of fresh, locally grown produce over the cheaper alternatives that are available in the supermarkets.” With this in mind, visitors can get hands on experience of milking the lovely but mischievous dairy goats at 4.30pm. You can also spend an exclusive day on the farm with on and ynne, where you could find yourself doing any number of things, from helping move herds around the estate to aiding in the delivery of the farm’s newest arrivals – a magical experience if you’re lucky enough to time it right! For a more relaxed experience, visitors can join instructor, Donna for some ‘Goat Yoga’. That’s right! This hilarious and therapeutic form of yoga is available for both family and adult classes, from April until October, and
really is a workout for the mind, body and soul – especially those laughter muscles! It’s guaranteed to help you smile both inside and out; as the website says, who can resist settling into a downward facing dog with the cutest, upward-facing baby goat peeking up at you? We ask Jon what it’s like to raise a family on the farm. “It’s really important to Lynne and I that our children have a wide outlook on life, culturally speaking, and with all of the cultural projects and initiatives going on across the estate, there’s so much there for them to take advantage of.” He goes on: “Our boys are great around the farm, helping us out a lot and pulling their weight, even if it’s cooking dinner while we’re out working late! With so much going on all the time, they’re a huge help!” Finally, we move onto the importance of local business and collaboration, and Jon explains that, for the Perkins family, it’s not just a one-way street. “If we, local businesses, can help one another, then I think it makes sense to do so. Dartington Dairy isn’t just for us; while it is our business, if we can help other businesses build an income by stocking their products, then that’s what we want to do. A large part of our success is down to collaboration with other local enterprises, and we’re really keen to return that favour.”

The Torpoint Ferry crossing the Tamar, by steam, circa 1900
P A look at life in Devon in days gone by.
eople have been crossing this short stretch of water for hundreds – if not thousands – of years, but it wasn’t until 1791 that a formal ferry service was established. Originally relying on sail or oar power alone, steam was later adopted and amazingly still used until 1960! But the greatest innovation was the introduction of a chain ferry or oating bridge in the 1830s, creating a reliable modern service, the principles of which continue to this day. In fact, the ferry shown here isn’t that far removed from the one still operating today. While the horses and carriages have made way for cars, the ferry still pulls itself across the water by the fi ed chains, with the drawbridges that are raised and lowered at each end for passengers to load up and disembark. hanks to its location on the coast, Plymouth is popular with those seeking a top-notch shopping experience, as well as visitors who want to make the most of seaside walks and provenance of seafood that can only be found this close to the sea. It’s a fantastic city for anyone hoping to enjoy some retail therapy, offering a shopping experience that’s all about mixing top high-street names with wonderful, independent shops, along wide, tree-lined, pedestrianised streets. There are also some wonderful experiences to be had for those looking to maximise their time in the city. Indeed, with so many ways to spend your time in Plymouth, you’ll be tempted to stay for an extra night or two, and with accommodation options like Boringdon Hall and The Duke of Cornwall Hotel available, one could hardly blame you! The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, dating back to 1863, stands as an iconic piece of Plymouth history. Created as lymouth s first lu ury hotel, it was designed to project Victorian grandeur and splendour. Having survived the bombardment of the Second World War while so much around it suffered destruction, many visitors are impressed by its architectural merits alone and indeed, it’s strength and fortitude during that time re ected that of the Plymouth people.
At Boringdon Hall, every effort has been made to restore and retain the dramatic, original architecture of each sleeping suite. What’s more, the three AA Rosettes that the restaurant has been awarded make staying within the bounds of the hotel very tempting indeed! However, if you do manage to pull yourself away and go in search of things to do, why not pay Plymouth Gin Distillery a visit? Established in 1793, visitors can take a tour and experience this distillery’s unique character while sampling its much-acclaimed gin. Tour options include a classic tour, an enhanced ‘Gin Connoiseur’s Tour’ with dedicated tasting of a number of gins, and ‘The Master Distiller’s Tour’, where you take responsibility for selecting your own botanical recipe and create your very own gin!

What do you love most about playing rugby for the Chiefs? “Playing with such a quality group of men, the staff and everyone involved in the club. When I arrived here from Australia, everyone was so welcoming. It’s a club that is driven to be successful in the future. They have great ambitions,
with a professional rugby programme and real good people. It’s a real positive place to play rugby.”
What do you love most about Devon? “I think for me, it’s the real mixture of things to do. I love how you can be in Exeter, in a café, go to the shops for some retail therapy,

What’s your favourite beach? “Aw, good question… I really like Beer, that’s cool. I like the north of Devon, Clovelly, but let’s go with Beer.”
Favourite restaurant? “Steaks n Sushi on North Street. I crave a bit of sushi and that’s about the one thing that’s hard to find here.
How do you unwind in your time out of training or playing? “I have a little three-year-old boy, which is good fun, so it normally involves doing something with him. He loves ballparks here, which is a thing we don’t have in Australia, due to the weather. We like to keep active, so we go fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast with the little fella. We just like exploring. He likes golf too, so spending time with him and my partner really.”
Favourite place to visit in Devon?
Most important question last… How should you eat a scone? Jam or cream first?
“The Nobody Inn in Doddiscombsleigh. I like driving into the middle of nowhere to find a cool pub and have a cheese platter. Every guest I have, I take there!”
ream first ve really got into that you see, we don’t have clotted cream back in Australia, so I’m thinking of a way of getting it back there, haha!”

but then within 5 to 10 minutes, you can be on the beach or out the back on hills on a farm. And to be fair, apart from the weather, it reminds me a lot of the environment in Australia. The coastal conditions are quite similar, except the water is a bit colder!”

CHARITY |
FARMING FOR THE FUTURE A charity founded in Devon that began by sending cows to those in need and has progressed into working with communities across Africa.
I GET INVOLVED Been inspired? To discover how you can make a difference for those struggling in Africa and to find out more about Send a Cow’s incredible journey, then head to its website where you’ll find additional details on how the organisation helps communities in Africa thrive.
n July 1988, Send a Cow’s founding farmers sent the first regnant cows to Uganda. In doing so, they sowed a seed which has gradually grown and transformed the lives of over a million people in sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative started as a reaction to Uganda’s food crisis following a long civil war. At the same time, EU milk quotas were forcing UK farmers to slaughter healthy dairy cows, prompting them to embark on a project to send cows from their own herds to Uganda. Founding farmer David Bragg tells us: “in February 1988 I came face to face with Gracie, a beautiful Friesian cow that had belonged to my herd in Devon. Along with a small group of West Country farmers, I had sent her and other dairy cows to improve the lives of struggling families, it was the beginning of Send a Cow.” Over the last three decades, the charity has evolved into an organisation that provides comprehensive training in organic farming, as well as gender and social development and business skills. Send a Cow provides a proven package of on-going support and practical training, including farming skills, gender equality, sanitation and money management
alongside livestock and tools, to ensure some of Africa’s most marginalised people are eating regularly and able to pay for children to attend school. Husband and wife Francis and ose hine live in enya and have benefited massively from the scheme. Francis tells us: “I used to be a tobacco farmer and was very poor. Today I sell vegetables along with milk and eggs.” Thanks to Send a Cow training, Francis and Josephine grow enough to feed themselves and sell the surplus, transforming their lives for the better and giving them hope for the future. David continues: “who knew that a crazy idea, started by a group of farmers almost 30 years ago, would today help 300,000 of Africa’s poorest people every year?” Send a Cow doesn’t put cows on planes anymore, but it has worked with over two million people in some of Africa’s poorest places and it has big plans to give millions more the hope and the means to secure their own future from the land.
