n putting together this month’s cover feature, celebrating Devon’s fabulous range of drinks producers (page 16), we were amazed by the sheer diversity on offer. Of course, we’ve always known how fantastic the produce here is, but it struck us just how well Devon’s drinks offering is performing, not just across the UK, but around the globe. Indeed, from distilleries and vineyards to orchards and award-winning breweries, Devon has something to wet everyone’s whistle. We talk to Cosmo Caddy, owner and founder of Devon Distillery (page 22) whose Devon grappa, aptly named Dappa, is taking the county by storm. If beer is more your tipple then turn to page 24 where we discover Red Rock Brewery, situated on the river Teign estuary. Our home section this month (from page 36) is a great place to find out what is currently on trend. From lighting to bedrooms, electricals to interiors, our experts are on hand to give you the low down when it comes to furnishing and refurbishing your home. With the summer season well and truly upon us, we take a look at some delightful places to stay. Whether you are looking for a weekend break or a longer stay then, from page 52, we take a look at a range of coastal and countryside escapes that are sure to give you a holiday to remember. We were also lucky enough to catch up with Nick Creasy, Operations Manager for the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs to find out more about this inspiring organsiation. Until next issue...happy reading!

Don’t miss Van Morrison at the Princess Theatre this October! Born in 1945, Van Morrison heard his shipyard worker father’s collection of blues, country and gospel early in life. Feeding off musical greats such as Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Mahalia Jackson and Leadbelly, he was a travelling musician at 13, singing and playing the guitar and saxophone in several bands, before forming Them in 1964.
This October, Van Morrison will be gracing the stage of the Princess Theatre in Torquay and it’s fair to say that tickets won’t be available for long! For more information and for tickets, visit www.atgtickets.com/venues/princesstheatre-torquay
Morrison’s talents would later find a full and astonishing range in his solo career and after working with Them’s New York producer Bert Berns on Top 40 pop hit ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, he moved into another realm.

by the river If you’re looking for a nice quiet spot for a short break without having to travel too far, why not try the Budock Vean Hotel and holiday cottages by the Helford river in Cornwall? Tucked away down a private lane in 65 acres of gardens and woodland leading down to the river, it’s a real oasis of peace and quiet. On site, there’s a Natural Health Spa, indoor pool, restaurant and cocktail bar. And, if you’re looking for more of an active break, then the on site golf course, tennis courts, guided kayak adventures and boat trips give you plenty to do. Some of the region’s best gardens are just a short walk away, as is the coastal footpath and a selection of picturesque waterside pubs. artisan bread near you As we discussed in the previous edition of Devon Living, Vicky’s Bread is seriously good. Deliciously crisp on the outside and delightful on the inside, the lovingly prepared hand-made loaves are worth looking out for! From Ivybridge to Exeter, and at many stores in-between, Vicky’s Bread is becoming increasingly popular. Traditionally made by hand with organic ingredients, the bread has become a common addition to farm shops and health stores due to its homemade taste and natural ingredients; forget homogenised bread that is churned out exactly the same loaf after loaf, each loaf of Vicky’s bread is wonderfully unique and perfectly imperfect. So, if you’re tempted to try Vicky’s Bread then head to the website to discover a stockist near you.

Get the clear-cut advice you need
from Devon Law
We hear about Waterside’s exciting clubhouse refurbishment, just in time for summer!
Based in the South Hams, Devon Law provides commercial legal advice to a wide range of sectors. Jenny Jones who owns the practice tells us: “We consider the business as a whole and look not only at what your business needs now, but what it needs to nourish it into the business you want it to be. We can help you buy and sell your business, advise on structures, help directors and shareholders determine their rights and liabilities, and document it in an appropriate agreement. We also prepare agency and distribution agreements for our clients and can help them protect their trademarks.” Jenny and her team pride themselves on offering jargon-free advice and making complex problems much more clear-cut. They also host a Devon Cream Tea in aid of a different charity every month and this July, they’ll be supporting the RNLI, so be sure to pop into the office on Saturday 21st July between 1pm and 3pm. For more information call 01548 831514 or visit www.devonlaw.co.uk
One of the south west’s leading holiday resorts, Waterside, has now completed an exciting renovation of its spacious clubhouse just in time for summer! Led by award winning design and creative consultants DesignLSM, the new design is rooted in the local area. Project Leader Chloe Mager tells us: “I’ve used Cornwall, the beaches and the countryside as inspiration, we’ve included Cornish stone on the reception desk and have used reclaimed timber cladding, which gives a rustic feel to the building.” The clubhouse renovation is just part of a series of projects that are being carried out to improve the customer experience at Waterside, and next on the list is external landscaping and some accommodation improvements to make your stay as comfortable as can be. Choose between Nordic style lodges or bungalows and enjoy the state of the art facilities, including a swimming pool, gym, restaurant, café and bar. The tranquil
La Fabrico
grounds offer the perfect escape from the office and with a range of activities available on site, there’s always something to keep you entertained. Roam around on Segways or head to the lake for a spot of fishing, then return to your luxury lodge of an evening and sink into your very own hot tub. The resort covers over 100 acres of parkland and forms an ideal base from which to explore further afield in Cornwall. Its central location means you can travel either the north or south coasts at ease, be it the stunning Camel Estuary, or the captivating and enigmatic grounds of the Lost Gardens of Heligan. All of this along with craft beer, local ciders, a tempting breakfast menu and music to boot, the team are already drawing praise for their incredible offering, and they’ve certainly got our vote! Agnes Arber was awarded first class results at both University College of London and The University of Cambridge for her BSc and Masters in Botanical Studies. She went on to become the first female botanist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first woman to receive the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London. Agnes Arber lived botanics. From her work, we wanted to create a fitting tribute. A convergence of nine herbs and fruits, distilled together in the same pot. With savoury, earthy notes of juniper, coriander, and angelica - complemented by the warm, spicy undertones of cassia. Finally woven with a sweet, refreshing bloom of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and just a twist of liquorice. For more info please visit AgnesArberGin.co.uk or search for us on ClickNDrink.co.uk

ere at Devon Living, we’re foodie fanatics and one category that never fails to impress is the array of ardent drinks producers countywide – alchemists, expertly honing their craft to produce liquid gold. Devon has it all, from award-winning breweries and distilleries to vineyards and orchards producing a rich and varied selection of drinks. Faced with the sheer abundance of wonderful producers, we could only give a flavour to whet the appetite. Without further ado, the bar is now open so let the tasting begin...
Distilleries
n Wicked Wolf Gin
With the country enjoying something of a gin revolution of late, we’ve made this our main focus. As you’ll see, Devon has been at the forefront of the gin renaissance with several trailblazers helping put the region firmly on the map. Often, the bottles themselves are things of real beauty too, as warm and welcoming as the contents they hold. A particular favourite of ours is Wicked Wolf Gin, a small batch handcrafted gin from Exmoor (www.wickedwolfgin.com). We recently met co-founder Julie Heap, who set up the venture with her husband, Pat Patel. “Each aromatic is prepared by hand, infused and distilled separately resulting in 11 individual distillates, which are then skilfully ç LEFT A tantalising blended,” explains Julie. “This approach allows cocktail made with us complete control over the strength of each Quick Gin flavour, and enables consistency from batch to batch. The gin is filtered at each stage, ê BELOW One of the fine producing a smooth, full-bodied and elegant offerings from spirit.” We’re informed it’s best enjoyed with Salcombe Gin ice and lime, over a sprig of thyme, which
enhances all the flavours. But, Julie says, “it’s equally at home neat with a block or two of ice, mixed with a quality tonic and garnished with pink grapefruit, in a classic gin martini or mixed with ginger beer.” Sounds good to us! Look out also for the limited edition varieties produced periodically throughout the year, which so far have included Silver Bullet and Full Moon. Salcombe Distillery, home to Salcombe Gin, has racked up a hugely impressive array of awards in its relative infancy (www. salcombegin.com). These include, most recently, Devon Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Small Business of the Year’, and last year’s Double Gold at The San Francisco World Spirits Competition for ‘Start Point’, Gold at The World Gin Awards, 3 stars at The Great Taste Awards and Best Producer at the Food Drink Devon Awards. EXPERIENCE
GIVE IT A GO Nothing beats sampling the taste for yourself and many of the breweries, distilleries, vineyards and orchards featured have tasting tours available to book – you might even get a go at creating your own tipple! Visit the websites for all the details.
Our tasting tour continues with Dartmoor Distillery, home to its original blend Black Dog Gin and, with a bit more of a kick, the ‘Navy strength’ Dartmoor Beast Gin (www. dartmoordistilleryltd.com). The team say: “We’re lucky enough to have Dartmoor as our back garden, which serves up brilliant local resources for crafting our unique products. Our gins are made with pure Dartmoor water and a carefully selected and curated mix of Dartmoor botanicals to bring flavour and distinction to every sip. In the summer you can often spot our master distiller, John Lawton, foraging for botanicals on Dartmoor, his faithful black labs, Taff and Tarka enjoying the walk by his side.” In our June issue, we discovered that a glass of Agnes Arber is the perfect accompaniment to a day in the Devon countryside (www.lwcdrinks.co.uk). Inspired by the great botanist, Arber Gin brings together a unique blend of nine botanicals including juniper, angelica, coriander, cassia, lime, grapefruit, lemon, orange and liquorice to create a delicious, crisp taste – a true delight for the taste buds! With an impressive rating on the popular app Ginventory, and third place out of 250 artisan gins at the 2018 International Spirits Challenge, its credentials are assured. Head to the Seven Stars in Totnes or the Royal Castle Hotel in Dartmouth to sample the magic yourself.
n Trewaington Gardens
Another to try is Quick Gin, born in the Exmouth spirits bar, Spoken (www.quickgin. co.uk). Owner George Nightingale, who sells 350 different gins at the bar, tells us more: “The name arose when customers kept asking for a ‘quick gin’ before their spouses came to collect them – not available until now!” Impressively, in just a year, the gin is now already available in 500 venues across the south west. George explains how to enjoy the perfect tipple. “Quick Gin should be served with a slice of orange which brings out the best of the 11 botanicals used in the recipe. The citrus forward gin is full bodied and pairs perfectly with tonic water.”

Devon Distillery was founded in 2013 by Cosmo Caddy, someone with a great pedigree in drinks production (www.devondistillery. com). “I was brought up around the food and drink world in Devon,” explains Cosmo. “My grandfather Maurice founded Sharpham Wine and Cheese in the year I was born, and I was picking grapes there aged four! I was introduced to grappa from Italy by my mother and have always loved it. Knowing I could get grapes’ skins, Pomace, from Sharpham each year I set out to make the UK’s first grappa.” Dappa proved a hit, and the distillery started winning awards from the offset, including Silver at IWSC in 2014, a two-star award with Great Taste and a Silver Outstanding with IWSC as well as a silver and bronze in San Francisco. An exciting addition is the UK’s first and only mobile gin distillery ‘Still

Traditional ales and craft beer have a real depth of flavour that you won’t find in typical, mass-produced beers and lagers. There’s a lot to brewing beer, with different variations and combinations of hops and grain creating unique flavours and intensities. For many a brewery, its yeast is a key part of its identity, integral in maintaining consistency of taste, character and quality. When it comes to beer, it’s serious business and the breweries across Devon are clearly devoted to their craft. A good place to start is the award-winning Red Rock Brewery based in Bishopsteignton, with its artisanal approach to producing beer since 2006 (www.redrockbrewery.co.uk). We heartily subscribe to the brewery’s ethos: “to brew the finest and most innovative beers around and that remains at the heart of everything we do. We hope that you enjoy drinking them as much as we enjoy making them!” Red Rock Brewery has three distinct ranges of beers, catering for all tastes from the traditional to the more contemporary: the Craft Range, the Traditional Range and the Slow Range. What unites them all is the expert craftsmanship, quality ingredients and careful balancing of flavours to create unique and delicious brews. The team explain more: “As brewers, we enjoy making all varieties of beers and experimenting with flavours, but there really is nothing quite like a good old fashioned quality pint of foaming real ale fresh from the pump.” Discover more about Red Rock Brewery and the team behind the beers on page 24. Dartmoor Brewery in Princetown, in the heart of the breathtaking countryside, lays claim to being the highest brewery in the British Isles, at 1465ft above sea level (www. dartmoorbrewery.co.uk). Dartmoor Brewery’s flagship beer is Jail Ale, “a full-bodied, deep golden brown with a well-rounded flavour and rich moreish aftertaste.” Managing Director Richard Smith tells us more: “We try to source our materials locally, such as barley grown by Tim Cox who farms at Drewsteighton. His
land is relatively sheltered in the ‘Dartmoor Shadow’ and has a mix of clays and grit, one of the few areas on Dartmoor capable of growing grain to the high standards demanded by maltsters. We use Tuckers Maltings in Newton Abbot, who have been producing floor malted barley since 1900 at their current malthouse; one of only four malthouses in the country producing malt in this traditional way. The other ingredient is our people and the passion our brewing team have for making consistent great tasting beer.” Another fine independent Dartmoor brewery is the equally thirst-quenching Black Tor Brewery at Christow, with a growing reputation for producing quality full-flavoured ales available in cask and bottle. (www. blacktorbrewery.co.uk). Black Tor recently launched its new pop-up bar at Dartington Food Fair and is now offering bars for private and corporate events, including the Budleigh Literary Festival in September. Owner and Head Brewer, Jonathon Crump hails Devon’s thriving foodie scene: “Devon is rich with a wealth of fantastic and innovative food and drink producers, and we are proud to be part of that and to fly the flag for Devon!”

Orchards and cider makers The West Country has a strong and widely recognised heritage of cider making. Every farm would once have had its own cider press, producing much needed refreshment for the farm workers from the abundance of apples. Whether you like it sweet or dry and crisp, still or sparkling, you can enjoy delicious cider in all its guises across the county, with a whole host of fantastic producers out there. Sample the authentic taste of Devon cider at Green Valley Cyder, located at Darts Farm (www. greenvalleycyder.co.uk). So what makes it so special? Well according to the team: “Green Valley Cyder is made only from freshly pressed Devon apples. In a county with near perfect conditions for apple-growing, we see no sense in bringing in apples or juice from outside. One of our aims is to encourage the development of farm orchards locally, particularly the replanting of traditional old cider apple varieties.”

The south west’s milder climate makes it one of the best places in the UK for growing grapes, and Devon has several vineyards well worth a visit and tasting. One to put on your list is the aforementioned and award-winning Sharpham Wine and Cheese, occupying a beautiful position on the edge of the River Dart (www.sharpham.com). Sharpham produces a fabulous range of wines for every palette, including whites, reds, rose and sparkling varieties. Just south of Exeter, Pebblebed Vineyards began as a community project in 1999 and has grown into a fabulous business with over 20 acres of vineyards, producing stunning, award-winning wines (www.pebblebed. co.uk). According to the team: “In a good year, close to 50,000 bottles of Devon wines are produced. English Sparkling is now widely recognised as some of the best in the world and tastings have shown Pebblebed Sparkling is amongst the best in England. Our vineyards are managed with careful attention to encourage wildlife and reduce the impact of farming on the environment. Pebblebed wines are similarly made with great attention to detail and in a ‘natural’ way with the minimum use of additives to best exhibit our great Devon ‘terroir’.”

The spirit
OF DISTILLING
Introducing Cosmo Caddy, owner and founder of Devon Distillery.
C n Premium
Devoncello beauituflly flavoured with Sicillian lemons
osmo Caddy, founder of Devon distillery, has quality alcohol production in his DNA. He tells us: “I was brought up around the food and drink world in Devon, my grandfather founded Sharpham Wine and Cheese the year I was born, and I was picking grapes there aged four!” Following in his footsteps, Cosmo founded Devon Distillery in 2013 and it has already progressed significantly. Cosmo tells us: “I decided to start my own distillery in Devon when I returned from living in California and spotted that nobody was producing what I consider a wonderful spirit.”
The tantalising spirit that Cosmo is referring to is Grappa, an Italian made delicate and smooth post-dinner tincture, with a beautifully warming effect. Grappa is a form of pomace brandy, made from the skins, pulp and seeds of grapes. Cosmo explains: “Knowing the team at Sharpham, and knowing I could get pomace from them each year, I set about with the plan of making the first grappa in the UK. After visiting Italy to sample the wonderful array of grappa that they produce and to meet professional distillers, I was ready to commission our very own bespoke grappa still.”
DID YOU KNOW? Newly released in the premium range is Devoncello, a wonderful version of limoncello that has been crafted from their very own Dappa, redistilled and then steeped with organic Scicillian lemons. Cosmo tells us: “Devencello is flying off the shelves it tastes wonderful, a more citrus/zingy take on limoncello than people might expect but still with a lovely sweetness.

Devon Distillery named its version of the spirit Dappa, and the first harvest of this unique spirit was made in October 2013, Cosmo elaborates: “By our first harvest I had also been in touch with other UK vineyards to work with them and secure as much pomace as I could. We are still finding new and exciting vineyards and wineries that produce exceptional red wines from which we can then upcycle the skins.” Transforming a waste product from the wine industry into a premium and sophisticated spirit. Devon Distillery immediately started winning awards following the production of the first bottles of Dappa; it was granted silver at IWSC in 2014 and achieved a two star award with Great Taste, in an on-going flow of recognition from the spirit industry. Following his sister’s wedding, Cosmo was inspired to create Still on the Move and after three and a half years he was ready to launch the UK’s first and only Mobile Gin Distillery, which sits on the back of Ginny, a 1973 VW T2 Pickup van that Cosmo acquired for the project. Ginny allows Devon Distillery to bring the art of distilling to you, Cosmo explains: “Still on the Move launched publicly in 2017 and has been instantly popular. Being able to make a custom gin for anyone, anywhere, has proven to be very exciting. In one sitting with Ginny, we can produce between 27-140 bottles of gin, which takes a few hours and has proven to be a total success with clients.” From bars and restaurants, to hotels and weddings, the chance to produce a bespoke gin at a reasonable price has been extremely popular. Still on the Move has already been lucky enough to travel the length and breadth of the country and has even made gin for the Royal Navy on the flight deck of HMS Ocean, with one of the bottles subsequently being presented to the Queen herself! It’s clear that Cosmo really has found a niche in the market both with Dappa and Still on the Move and it doesn’t stop there!
The most recent endeavour that Cosmo and his team have undertaken is to open a gin school, Cosmo tells us: “We are extremely proud to be opening Devon Gin School on our new premises in Dartington. We will be hosting groups of people to come and learn about gin making, produce a bottle of gin under our gentle guidance and even design their own labels,” so you can discover the art of gin making and create a bespoke bottle of your very own handcrafted gin. So, get involved! Either through simply purchasing a beautifully crafted bottle of Dappa, making your own gin with Still on the Move, or learning the nuances behind the distilling process at Devon Gin School, the opportunities to share in delicious spirits are endless.

We discover more about the family behind Red Rock Brewery in Bishopsteignton and the key to producing an expertly crafted beer.
W
ith this issue’s opening feature taking a tasting tour of Devon’s excellent drinks producers, we wanted to find out a little more about the family values at the heart of Red Rock Brewery. Founded in 2006 by a local Devon family, father and son John and Lewis Parkes set out on a journey to establish a homegrown microbrewery and Red Rock Brewery was born. Sister Hollie joined the team two years later and, since John’s retirement in October 2017, now heads up the processing department. The brewery really is a family business that’s grown from humble beginnings to an established and credible enterprise – along with Lewis and Hollie, there’s sister Hannah who manages the office and mum, Jackie, who looks after the onsite tap bar, plus another four team members each with their own roles in the day-to-day running of the brewery. The name itself is inspired by a renowned local landmark, the Red Rock situated on the River Teign estuary.
It’s not just about brewing good beer – it’s about brewing outstanding beer that people enjoy drinking

RIGHT The Red Rock farm brewery
A government grant awarded in 2015 allowed Red Rock to expand into a further barn where a new bottling line was installed, reducing production time by more than half and increasing capacity. The brewery now supplies a large selection of local pubs, restaurants and hotels as well as farm shops, off licences, wholesalers and, most recently, a number of Morrisons stores as part of its local supplier pledge. Despite its growth, Red Rock hasn’t lost its homegrown roots or its artisan way of producing the beers. This still remains at the heart of it all. Brewing on a farm in the south Devon hills has its challenges at times, but for Lewis and John the location of the brewery was as important as the beer itself. With generous support from local farmers, Geoff and Joe Lang at Higher Humber Farm in Bishopsteignton, Red Rock’s first beer – the aptly named Red Rock best bitter – was brewed in a renovated barn. The brewery’s ethos has always been to produce innovative beers with bold, distinctive flavours. Lewis is a trained chef and former brewer for Teignworthy so maximising flavour is a fundamental element of the business for him. It’s not just about brewing good beer – it’s about brewing outstanding beer that people enjoy drinking as much as he enjoys making it! Supporting local is also an important part of Red Rock Brewery. Where possible Red Rock will source the finest, local ingredients including their own pure spring water, which gives each beer its individual character. Red Rock produces an extensive range of eight traditional cask conditioned real ales. These are the pioneering beers of the brewery offering a variety of flavours to reflect the seasons, from crisp, light summer ales to hearty full strength winter brews. This time of year, it’s the light, golden session ales that prove popular. The Lighthouse IPA is a best seller and is much in demand. In recent years, Red Rock has introduced a new and edgy range of craft beers, including its multi-award winning Devon Pilsner. Lewis initially produced it for the brewery’s onsite tap bar, but such was its popularity it’s
now a bestseller, served on draught in many venues across the south west. There are also three others in the range and a limited edition IPA. The final and most recent additions are the award-winning ‘Slow’ beers. As the name suggests, these flavoured beers are inspired by a Think Tank – The World Institute of Slowness; the belief being that slower thinking and slower producing will improve quality of life and production. The concept is simple – if you drink a beer slow, you will experience more. Using locally-sourced ingredients, the brewery’s Slow beers pay homage to the slowness and beauty of the natural environment surrounding them. The awardwinning Honey beer is brewed using honey sourced from Haldon Hill; the blackberries that flavour the Blackberry Slow are from a farm across the River Teign, and the elderflowers are sourced from the farm itself. Whatever your tipple of choice, you’re guaranteed to find something that leaves you refreshed and rewarded from Red Rock Brewery, a true Devon brewery, with family at its heart.

tterton is a delightful and historic village nestling in the beautiful east Devon countryside between Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton. Located comfortably close to the centre of the village, opposite St Michael’s church, Barton House is a stunning Grade II listed family home sitting within just over half an acre of land overlooking the river Otter. In the same family for over 30 years, the property is believed to have been originally constructed in the 15th Century as a farm house which was substantially remodelled in the late 19th Century and again by the present owners in recent years. The accommodation is substantial and adaptable with six main bedrooms, although bedrooms five and six could easily be incorporated into an informally divided section of the house incorporating the east end. Both first floor bathrooms have been recently upgraded. There are three spacious reception rooms including a large and splendid drawing room with views over the Otter Valley. The beautiful kitchen breakfast room is perfect for bringing the family together, while the generous dining room offers more formal dining for those special occasions. At the western end of the house, a ground floor annexe with shower room presents the perfect opportunity for holiday letting, additional guest accommodation or perhaps for accommodating relatives.
The grounds of Barton House are beautifully kept, across two levels. On the top level is a large driveway, double garage and car port, and stable with tack room, making it ideal for equine enthusiasts. There is also a range of stone outbuildings and a workshop, a large open-fronted barn, offering potential for further accommodation, a level lawn and a paved west-facing terrace. A path leads to a stunning lower lawn which is adjacent to a leat running from the mill. A cob wall separates the lower lawn from a small area of woodland. The world Heritage Jurassic Coast lies within half mile of the village and the nature reserve at the mouth of the river Otter, famous for its wide variety of birdlife, is around a mile away. As such, Barton House presents the perfect opportunity to enjoy the dream life in the stunning Devon countryside.

bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. We particularly love the fabulous new high-specification family bathroom with a freestanding bath. The cottage sits in a secluded, southfacing, hillside location in a beautiful valley, alongside one other thatched cottage, with lovely views across the valley. For the green fingered, it’s surrounded by enchanting country gardens, including beautifully presented ornamental gardens. At the bottom of the garden are two outbuildings – a goat house and two stables, which could potentially be converted into separate holiday lettings. An orchard, vegetable patch, paddocks, an agricultural building and a polytunnel are situated across the lane. Bertie's Cottage lies in an idyllic rural location, surrounded by stunning countryside, close to Dartmoor. The villages of Yeoford and Cheriton Bishop are both within easy reach, with Yeoford offering a mainline station and a primary school, while Cheriton Bishop also has a primary school, a post office and a local store, plus a village pub and a doctor’s surgery. Crediton is just five miles away, providing access to many of the necessary everyday amenities, whilst historic Exeter is only 14 miles away, with its excellent shopping, leisure and cultural facilities, including plenty of superb restaurants, cafés and bars.

ust imagine laying claim to your own private beach. With Thorns you could enjoy this and so much more! This property in a chic south coast location presents an exciting opportunity for the lucky person who gets to hold the keys. It’s currently divided into two apartments, making it perfect for either guest accommodation or a potentially lucrative holiday rental. The two-bedroom first floor apartment has been beautifully refurbished to take advantage of the truly spectacular views, whilst the ground floor apartment is in need of updating but offers enormous potential. Alternatively, it could be converted back into one residence in order to create a gorgeous and substantial waterside property. The property is approached via a long, private and gated driveway, which sweeps down the hill. Thorns also has a double garage, which would make a fantastic artist’s studio. Another great feature is the fabulous indoor swimming pool, heated by solar panels. The grounds extend to just over 20 acres, providing a high degree of privacy, including a lawn at the front, and a number of gravel pathways and raised beds. A well-placed seating area makes the most of the spectacular sea views. The remaining land has been left as a natural habitat with acres of mature trees
and shrubs, as well as areas of woodland, providing a haven for wildlife. A pathway leads down to Cherryred Beach. From this pathway, outstanding views along the coast can be enjoyed, reaching as far as Dorset. A short walk from the beach leads you to Smugglers Cove, a stretch of sand with references dating back to the early 17th century. Thorns is located on a distinctive stretch of red-rocked coastline, around a mile from the popular village of Shaldon, at the mouth of the river Teign. The village has a sandy beach, moorings for yachts in the estuary and a sailing club. An annual regatta is attended by crews from all over Devon and Cornwall. Nearby Teignmouth offers yet more amenities, including a popular 18-hole golf course so you can enjoy a leisurely round or two, before returning to your beautiful new bolthole by the sea.

C
hurchill’s newest developments along the Devon and Cornwall coastline offer the ideal retirement lifestyle in the highly popular locations of Torquay, Truro, Penzance and Newquay, providing the perfect retreats, close to local amenities, yet far enough away to offer an oasis of tranquillity whenever you need it. Each apartment is self-contained with its own front door, so independence and privacy are always maintained, and when you’re feeling sociable, the Owners Lounge & Coffee Bar is a popular meeting place in which to make new friends and relax. So what does retirement with Churchill Retirement Living mean? Firstly, it means that everything is taken care of. As we get older, many of us begin to feel that our family home is now too big and the constant maintenance too much like hard work. As a result, thousands of people in retirement are now choosing to move to specialist retirement developments. Secondly, for most of us, we dream of retiring somewhere idyllic, and that’s exactly what Churchill wants to help you achieve, but with the convenience of nearby amenities, shops and local transport. In each of the Torquay, Truro, Penzance and Newquay based developments, you’ll find one and two bedroom apartments available, each enjoying modern kitchens and bathrooms, with those on the ground floor having
access to landscaped communal gardens. A great deal of importance is placed on these gardens, as they provide a welcome retreat for you, your family and friends. And, should you have family or friends visiting from afar, each development benefits from a guest suite, which is bookable in advance, meaning they needn’t fork out for a hotel that’s miles down the road! So if you’re excited to embark upon the next chapter in your life but want to ensure you make the most of it, why not contact the Churchill Retirement Living team and discover the lifestyle you’ve been dreaming of?

A SERVICE TO We catch up with market leading installer of resin driveways, Oltco, who share some exciting news.
F
or those of us lucky enough to own our own home here in Devon, we understand that when it comes to enlisting the help of a company to make home improvements there are certain considerations that have to be made. How reliable is the product and what guarantees will you be made that it will last? Are you paying a fair price for the service? Can this company really help you achieve the lifestyle you’re aspiring to? Can you trust them? When you’re not an expert yourself, this final question is especially pertinent. And, while commissioning a company to complete a driveway or resin flooring project may not seem as important as undertaking work in the property itself, you’d be surprised at how many have suffered from a service that promises the world, but ultimately fails to deliver the goods. This is where Tom Stringer and John Pearce, Directors of Oltco come in. We met them a few months ago, and we were immediately struck by their refreshing approach to business. The key for them is to help their clients achieve a lifestyle that they themselves would be happy leading, and their ethos is very simple: “feeling good about the work we do and the decisions we make.” Ensuring that the customer is well cared for and gets the quality of service they were expecting; this is absolutely paramount to Tom and John’s incredible success so far. After a short chat with the two of them, it came as no surprise to learn that Oltco has become a market leader when it comes to the guarantee they offer – an impressive 20 years – which leaves every customer satisfied that they really are getting what they paid for. What’s more, in the unlikely event that a repair needs making after a job
has been finished, the Oltco team is more than happy to oblige, which, let’s face it, is the way a guarantee should work! This approach (which, granted, is unusual for a driveway company) has seen Oltco go from a resin flooring contractor to a leading installer of resin bound gravel driveways throughout the south west and beyond, with a number of prestigious clients having reaped the benefits of the team’s expertise. And they are constantly improving, ever on the lookout for ways in which they can improve every aspect of their service. This even boils down to the resin they use, which is already the highest quality you’re likely to find in the industry! It’s this attitude towards testing and evolving that allows Tom and John to offer such a lengthy guarantee and, over 20 years of experience, research, trial and error, they know how to achieve the best results on every project, ensuring that their clients’ needs are at the forefront of everything they do. During a more recent catch up, Tom and John announced some very exciting news, which is that Oltco is soon to become a franchise! This means that the ethos and winning approach to customer service that has made Oltco such a resounding success will soon be available to clients up and down the country. So, back to those burning questions about whether a company is suited to your project: if overhauling your outside space is something your home or business desperately needs, we think it’s fair to say that Oltco have all the right answers.

f you’re an antique, jewellery or art collector, Drakes Auctions offers the chance to find that one of a kind piece that you’ve been searching for, with fortnightly general sales taking place as well as a regular line up of Antiques and Collectable sales. A great example of what you can find is a beautifully preserved WWII Swiss MO-05 army bicycle, complete with a deerskin Austrian backpack and helmet – an authentic display to admire and delve into the historic period of the Second World War. As well as providing unique buying opportunities, Drake’s Auctions also offers a quick and easy way to sell items that you’re no longer attached to. This might be an old family heirloom, such as a vintage ring or an old-fashioned piece of furniture; although dated in your eyes, pieces like this could be quickly snapped up by someone else. Take your items to the Tavistock auction house, where the team will be happy to value them for you. Alternatively, a member of the team will be happy to join you at home and go over the items you want to sell. What’s more, if you have items that are difficult to transport, Drakes offers a house clearance service and can collect your items for you, making the process a whole lot easier! Indeed, selling our unwanted items
can quickly become tedious, and there are various websites offering us the chance to promote our belongings online, but selling your wares through an auction can often be the simpler solution. For buyers, it’s possible to attend viewing days and peruse the items in person, giving you the advantage of identifying what you’re interested in before the auction takes place. One customer who has benefitted from the auction experience tells us: “The crew is always helpful and knowledgeable, I have both bought and sold with Drakes Auctions and I always look forward to the viewings and auction day fun.” Indeed, the excitement of seeing the item you want come under the hammer, and competing with other buyers to seal the deal, all the while listening to the rapid fire of comments from the auctioneer makes Drakes Auctions a truly unique shopping experience. The best part is, even if you’re too tied up to attend, it’s possible to bid online!

REALISING
A VISION We take a look at a stunning project recently completed by interior design specialists, Iroka.
S
ituated on the Pentire Peninsula near Newquay, Fistral House from Legacy Properties enjoys an unrivalled position, just minutes from Fistral beach. The development features 10 luxurious apartments, each of which offers the very best in contemporary coastal living. Interior specialist Iroka was briefed to design the interiors and to create a peaceful holiday home for Legacy's clients, charged with selecting the furniture, lighting, floors and window dressings. Iroka Flooring Manager, Zoe Polglase specified the flooring, choosing a stunning limed oak engineered wood that offers high levels of durability throughout the open plan living areas. In the bedrooms, Zoe completed the flooring with luxury wool carpets. Once the flooring was down, contemporary sheer curtains from Casadeco’s Zao collection were selected for the living areas, ensuring that nothing would distract from the beautiful ocean vistas, offering ease of living thanks to the installation of motorised tracks. Bespoke curtains cut from statement fabrics were installed in each bedroom, while Iroka’s team of fitters added sheer roller blinds to offer privacy, adopting a neutral palette for all of the window dressings to co-exist with the interior scheme. This palette works effortlessly, especially with the reflective metallic accents and chunky
wood table tops, and as a result, each room enjoys a feeling of lightness, which combines with the contrasting dark frames of the furniture and lighting to give a real sense of balance. In the living areas, Iroka chose an accompaniment of textures to be highlighted in the loose furniture, using shimmering velvets in the sofas and rugs to subtly contrast against the oiled oak flooring. Leather dining chairs were then chosen for durability, with bespoke booth seating being installed to offer flexibility, complete with leather upholstered seating pads. Indeed, the zoned dining areas have been finished beautifully, with oak dining tables designed by Roberto Paoli stealing the show with their beautifully reflective bent glass pedestal bases In each of the bedrooms, feature wallpapers in neutral tones and textures make for a calming atmosphere, whilst bespoke fitted headboards (complete with fitted electrical sockets) have been designed in a ‘hotel' style’ to give a feeling of grandeur and luxury. In all, it’s fair to say that with the help of the experts at Iroka, Legacy Properties have well and truly brought their vision to life, offering owners at Fistral House the very best in contemporary coastal living.

We catch up with Mark, Director of Beacon Electrical, and learn a little more about this incredible local business.
I
n today’s world, global chains and online superstores are able to dominate the market by sheer size and undercutting the local speciality stores of days gone by. So, it’s hard not to be impressed when a local business manages to hold its own and actually beat the competition. These underdog stories really do warm the heart, and there’s something to be said for handing over your hard earned cash for home wares, knowing that it’s being injected straight back into the local economy and not making it’s way to a central accounts department that may not even be in the same country! Introducing Beacon Electrical. Based in Plymouth and second-generation familyrun, this fantastic local company has been established for over 40 years, with five shops in the Plymouth and south Devon region. Back in the 1970s and early 80s, company Director Mark tells us: “We were originally known for supplying house-wiring and lighting supplies to the keen DIYer and trade customers. But since then, we have continually expanded our offering to include a wide range of heating, decorative lighting, white goods like washing machines and fridges, and small domestic appliances.” Fast forward to present day and Beacon Electrical has become a fantastic local alternative to national giants

With strong ties to Whirlpool Corporation, Beacon stocks the best-quality white goods
like B&Q, Currys and Argos, for all types of electrical products, while still offering professional advice, friendly service and, most importantly, unbeatable prices! There are five branches in total – two in Plymouth, plus stores in Plymstock, Totnes and Kingsbridge and there’s even a sister company, Beacon Blinds, with an excellent showroom displaying all the latest designs and fabrics. Mark continues: “Each branch has its own identity and a tailored range of products to suit the demands of the local community. For example, the south Devon town stores in Totnes and Kingsbridge also stock a great range of top-of-the-range technology, including televisions and audio products from the likes of Samsung, Sony, Sonos and many others. We are the largest independent supplier of these goods in Devon and are going from strength to strength,” and credit for this can be given to the unbeatable combination of professional advice and the lowest prices. “But the key is that we can order in any model from any manufacturer by special order, supplying the best possible products to suit each of our customers’ needs.” Perhaps you’re looking to get ahead of the game and ensure that your house is prepared for when the balmy months of summer come to an end. If so, Beacon Electrical has a wealth of heating products available, “from
£9.99 portable halogen heaters, to storage heaters and fantastically realistic flameeffect electric fires. We can advise on which type of heaters are best for each situation, and are able to work in tandem with reliable local tradesmen to offer a full service, from consultation to fitting.” In fact, this fitting service extends to much of the Beacon service and is inclusive of kitchen appliances and TV products too! Beacon Electrical has always been known for exceptional customer service, offering the highest level of advice to customers and coupling it with ultra-competitive pricing. It’s a member of the Euronics buying group, which pools the buying power of over 600 companies throughout the country to enable them to compete with the biggest national stores and online outlets. Mark finishes: “We recently bought a second warehouse to enable us to purchase the right deals at the right prices, and so we guarantee to match or beat the prices of the big highstreet and online names. We always want to say ‘yes’ to the needs of any customer who comes through the door, and our slogan is simple: ‘Internet prices, local service'.”

DEVON IN VOGUE
F
We speak to some of Devon’s best interior experts about what’s currently on trend in the world of interior design.
or some, home décor is a matter of function, for others a reflection of personality. For all of us, however, there comes a time when we need to oust the old and update the space in which we live. But how to keep it on trend? Instead of resting on our laurels, we thought we’d speak to some of Devon’s finest interior design companies and see what they have to say about interior design trends this year, in the hope that we can help you make those all-important decisions to keep your home current. Scandinavian style has been a key feature in the world of interiors for some time, evolving itself like a microcosm of the wider industry, so it’s no wonder that, according to the team at Shuttercraft (www. shuttercraft.co.uk), gold or copper colours are really helping to bring homes to life, giving warmer colour to materials and helping achieve that cosy, Scandinavian feel. Paula Hibbens, from Shuttercraft in Cornwall and Plymouth, also suggests that classic wooden surfaces, such as solid panel shutters, are a great treatment idea for
living room windows, also tying in nicely with the Scandinavian trend. Once again gaining popularity among architects, Paula tells us: “Wood is a material that just keeps on giving!” One thing that we love about the Scandinavian look is the rustic feel it offers to homes of all kinds, and Ian from Prestige Furniture (www.prestigefurniture.co.uk), Newton Abbot notes a trend of combining leathers with rustic reclaimed furniture. He suggests adding a touch of velvet in luxurious colours to elevate your interior spaces, a technique that’s become especially popular when combined with “sophisticated, daring and bolder uses of colour.” When asked on what’s trending this year, Clive from Realwood Furniture (www.realwood-furniture.co.uk) tells us: “What we term as ‘industrial’ – a combination of wood and metal – has been ticking over in the background for sometime, but 2018 has seen it become very popular.” But, he stresses, “don’t over clutter a room. Rather, use a few statement items of furniture and lighting to really give it that wow factor.”

This moves us nicely onto one aspect of interior design that’s often overlooked – lighting. Jamie Moxey from Dusk Lighting (www.dusklights.co.uk) in Exeter tells us: “Many people make the mistake of focusing on the light fitting itself and fail to consider the light emitted and how you can play with the warmth, brightness and light fall. “Over the past year, we’ve noticed a shift in customer preference from copper to clear glass light fittings, with particular reference to Garden Trading’s Hoxton Range. This range is simple and stylish in its design as well as neutral, therefore offering itself to a myriad of home decors and architectural designs.” But interior design isn’t just about matching your décor to what’s currently in vogue. Indeed, Gill Coates, owner of Roomshadows (www.roomshadows.com) tells us: “This year is all about creating spaces that enhance your emotions, so when you want a change of style, think how you want to feel in the space and use textures and colours to portray an ambience” – advice we think will stand the test of time, even as trends continue to change.
It doesn’t necessarily need to be about the inside of your home either, and Jamie from Sail Shades Direct (www. saishadesdirect.co.uk) is keen to encourage us to maximise our outside space. This is especially important in Devon where lifestyle often revolves around time spent in the outdoors. After all, if you’ve bought your dream home, you’ve likely done so in part because of its location and with shade sails from Jamie and the team, you can “make the most of your outside space and protect yourself from the harmful U.V rays of the summer sun, while transforming your patio into your very own outside dining room!” So there you have it, from warm, Scandinavian and statement pieces, to vibrant and bold splashes of colour, there are a number of ways to keep your home in vogue. The important thing is to consider what suits your home’s surroundings and character and, once you’ve got that figured out, perhaps enlist the advice of one of Devon’s many interior experts, to ensure your envisaged dream home is well and truly brought to life.

H
ere at Devon Living we love fashion, beautiful patterns, soft fabrics and unique items that catch our eye, especially when those items are made and produced in our very own county. The vibrant colours of our lush countryside and moorland with it’s notoriously bright purple heather tumbling over the hills and sandy grasses, has inspired generations of artists, including those in fashion. Not to mention the turquoise waters and chalky cliffs of our coastline! Join us on our journey to explore some of the most successful independent clothing and accessory brands made and produced right here in Devon. Founded in 1996 in Salcombe, Quba Sails is a unique clothing brand that was sparked by an idea between friends (Will Bees and James Hartley), to create one-of-a-kind jackets made from reclaimed sailcloth. After displaying the jackets at a few boat shows, word soon spread and their popularity rocketed. The company now offers a wider range of nautical-inspired clothing as well as accessories, holdalls and home furnishings, and reaches out to customers around the globe. Our favourites this season are the Celeste Jersey Blazer and the Azura Print Dress; we just love the sailing boat pattern and flattering fit. www.quba.com Following the success of Quba Sails, Will Bees decided to launch his very own brand in 2014. Featuring bespoke purses, pouches, clutches and bags, Will designs and manufactures accessories in a range of styles, using over five hundred fabrics and two types of vegetable tanned leather. Each accessory is custom made and totally unique, Will explains: “We only use top quality textiles and luxurious natural tan leathers. All suppliers are UK-based and everything is handcrafted in England

using traditional techniques.” Our in house favourite is the Audrey Sparkle Cosmetic Bag and the Florence Tropical Mini Pouch, the perfect addition to your festival attire this summer! With the potential to emboss names on the front too, these bags make a beautifully unique gift idea for your loved ones. www.willbeesbespoke.com While we’re on the topic of accessories, let's just stop and discuss the faux fur revolution that Helen Moore has spearheaded. Helen Moore has been designing daring faux fur creations for over 30 years and was the first person to utilise the fabric in fashion in the UK. Established in 1982 in the heart of Devon, all collections are designed and made in Tiverton, and are of exceptional quality. The company prides itself on manufacturing in the UK because it means it has complete control over quality and can react quickly to changes in demand. Helen Moore designs now often grace the halls of London Fashion Week and the pages of Vogue. Our favourite item has got to be the Pebble Faux Fur Multi Vixen Scarf; similar to the scarf Fearne Cotton proudly wore to work at Radio 1, but in more muted tones. www.helenmoore.com Now onto quintessentially British brand, Jack Wills, which began right here in Devon in 1999. Peter Williams and Robert Shaw founded the brand to celebrate Britain’s heritage and wanted to capture the essence of university life, epitomising what it is to be British, irreverent and carefree. The pair state: “We continue to be influenced by everything, from our history and culture to sporting and country pursuits. We take pride in using the finest quality materials, to deliver our distinctive connection between the old and new, celebrating what it is to be young and fabulously British.” Here at Devon Living we love that the clothing is sophisticated yet playful and our favourite
piece this season has got to be the Hollyfast Cullote co-ord. www.jackwills.com Starting from humble beginnings selling printed t-shirts out the back of a van, Saltrock has since become a favourite among beach lovers and is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a surf brand this year. It all started in the 80s when two brothers travelling the world looking for waves arrived in London. They immediately hopped on a train bound for the south west and never looked back. Everything about north Devon, the surf, the landscape and the community was perfect for the brothers and for Saltrock. The t-shirts soon started flying off the shelves and the continued success meant the brand was soon recognised nationally, and then internationally. We think the chino shorts are the perfect addition to your beach wardrobe this summer and the hoodies will keep you wonderfully warm after a day spent at the beach. www.saltrock.com So there you have it, our quick fire exploration of some of Devon’s beautifully bespoke independent clothing stores. Watch this space over subsequent editions as we delve into more beautiful clothing and accessory brands that we’re lucky enough to have on our doorstep!

ou’ll find Merchants Manor, a seaside country house hotel with its own 2AA Rosette restaurant and spa, in the very heart of the vibrant town of Falmouth. Already the hotel of choice for those wanting to get away from it all in luxurious surroundings, two separate eco-friendly residences have been added to showcase the very best in British design, oozing elegance, convenience and style. Designed by award-winning interior designer Helen Hughes, these boutique homes, aptly named Landlubber and Lookout, have their own unique personality based on Cornwall’s nautical history and sub-tropical climate. Each sleeps four in coastal comfort with two bedrooms and both have a generous kitchen and living space for kicking back after a day’s exploring. To add to the luxury they also have a private terrace with jacuzzi hot tubs boasting spectacular views over Falmouth Bay. Guests staying in the residences are also able to enjoy all of the facilities in the main hotel including the outstanding Rastella restaurant, swimming pool, Technogym and indulgent Linen Room spa – a stay here really does give you the best of both worlds and is ideal for couples, friends and families alike.
Inspired by the Cornish countryside, and flooded with beautiful natural light, Landlubber and Lookout have their own unique personalities. Lookout’s interiors reflect the calming surroundings of the Falmouth coastline, with bespoke floor-toceiling windows allowing you to gaze out at the breathtaking sea views from the comfort of your bed. Both bedrooms feature calming tones of cool blues against bright corals. In each room there are snippets of quirky furnishings, such as antique mirrors attained at an auction from the estate of a renowned artist in Helford, and antique hooks recovered from the private quarters of Queen Mary when she sailed around India and Asia as part of a coronation tour with King George V. Lookout’s bathrooms showcase contemporary elegance with handmade tiles and brass taps as well as a wet room with large rain head showers from Bert & May and Temple Spa products. If you love the outdoors why not immerse yourself with an overnight retreat to Landlubber, a tropical haven inspired by Edwardian plant hunters who travelled far and wide to bring exotic botanical treasures to the Cornish coast.
Drop off your bags and venture into your very own sanctuary in the form of a 30-metre private garden complete with hot tub jacuzzi. Landlubber has a contemporary finish, softened with comfortable furnishings, reclaimed timber cladding and artisan hand tiling allowing you to escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. The kitchen-living area offers plenty of space to relax with bespoke seating as well as a rustic farmhouse dining table sourced from a local antique shop in the town that’s perfect for entertaining family and friends. Bedrooms provide ultimate comfort with handmade beds, crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and large double doors that lead out onto your own private terrace. For the utmost in indulgence, you can treat yourself to an in-room treatment available from the hotel’s acclaimed Linen Room spa or enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared by the hotel’s Chef Patron, Hylton Espey before ending your evening with a glass of fizz as you gaze up at the stars from your hot tub. The team at Merchants Manor will ensure you arrive to a ‘home away from home’, with added touches including a welcoming hamper with lavish goodies including freshly baked sourdough bread and ‘manor made’ butter, provisions from the kitchen team as well as treats from Temple Spa for instant tranquility. Owner Nick Rudlin tells us: “We are delighted to unveil our new spaces to guests. Each residence is eco-friendly and designed to reflect the surroundings of the Falmouth coast. This has been supported by the AA who have awarded the spaces the highest accolade of five gold stars making them one of only a handful in all of Cornwall.” These new homes are perfect for those looking for the luxury of a private holiday escape while at the same time offering all of the splendid amenities that a boutique hotel has to offer.

ne of the things we love most about Devon is its perfect combination of coast and countryside. And Exmoor National Park, in particular, manages to distil the very best of both into one beautiful region of lush country bordered by an enchanting stretch of the north coast. There’s so much to do and discover here and a great place to start your adventures is the Old Rectory Hotel in Martinhoe, a literal stone’s throw from the coast. The hotel has been beautifully decorated throughout to an exacting standard, exuding English country charm in spades, from the elegant reception rooms to the 11 luxurious, inviting and individuallystyled en-suite bedrooms. Your room might enjoy views of the sea or the gorgeous gardens; either way, you really couldn’t hope for a better base for exploring the best of Exmoor. The grounds are as pretty and manicured as the hotel itself, green lawns punctuated by a range of trees, exotic plants and a lake, complete with its own bridge. There are many spots in which to catch the sun or the shade, depending on your preference, perhaps with a good book and most definitely with a drink of something refreshing in hand. Indeed, if you’re into your food and drink, and love it fresh and local, then you’ve come to the right place. Executive Chef Thomas Frost is a native of north Devon and delights in showcasing the best ingredients and fare that the region’s natural pantry has to offer. Whether it’s the Ilfracombe crab, lime and avocado cocktail or a fillet of Devon Red Ruby beef, your taste buds are sure to thank you for the experience. The wine list, meanwhile, has been carefully selected for taste, value and to complement the menu. The Old Rectory Hotel is the realisation of the vision of Huw Rees and Sam Prosser, who “took to the hills to follow our dream and open the kind of hotel where we and our friends would like to stay”. The awards they have racked up to date really do speak for themselves, from TripAdvisor’s ‘Most Romantic Hotel in Europe’ to Alastair Sawday’s ‘Old Favourite of the Year’. So, if a trip to Exmoor is on your list of things to do (and it really should be), why not begin with booking a room at the Old Rectory?

W
e are so lucky, here in Devon, to have such a wide choice when it comes to spas and treatments venues. Many are part of luxury hotels so you can extend your experience from a relaxing day to a decadent weekend, or combine it with lunch or afternoon tea for a foodie treat. More and more, Devon spas are becoming the destination of choice for those wanting to switch off but still enjoy a spectacular location, and there is a signiďŹ cant amount of investment being made to ensure these spas are up there with the very best.
North Devon is home to the Woolacombe Bay Hotel and Haven Spa. Whether you are drawn by the call of the Atlantic ocean or want to explore the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park, Woolacombe Bay offers a base from which to explore and enjoy a relaxing retreat on your return. •EXPERIENCE• A DAY O U T E X P LO R I N G T H E TA R K A T R A I L Anyone who has read Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter will fondly recall how vividly his astonishing way with words brought north east Devon to life; how he successfully captured the essence of the landscape, bustling with wildlife, filled with personality, bird song and natural drama. Tarka covers a lot of ground during his travels and, thanks to the way in which Williamson brought this natural haven to life, visitors in their thousands have been inspired to follow in their favourite otter’s footsteps. The Tarka Trail covers a route of approximately 80 miles, from Okehampton on the fringes of Dartmoor to the county’s tip in Lynton. Not only has this area been designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve – an area comprising terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems – it is also home to a number of fantastic, independently run businesses, from bike hire shops and home improvement stores, to eateries that champion the finest local produce. In a forthcoming issue we’ll be taking a much more in-depth look at Williamson, Tarka and the area that man and otter have well and truly put on the map.

THE ROAD
y r e v o c e r o t We catch up with Gerri Creedon, the inspiring personality behind Regain Recovery.
G
DID YOU KNOW? In the last year, more than 40 people have been through the Regain Recovery programme and are maintaining their recovery still. This includes them retaining their relationships and careers.
erri tells us: “People often ask me where my passion for supporting people to make positive changes in their lives comes from, especially as I had a successful career working in the oil industry. My own struggle with alcohol over the years led me to realise that I had to make significant changes in my life. My years struggling with alcohol were arguably the most painful of my adult life, however somewhere deep inside I knew there was hope, and experience shows me now that I was right.” Gerri explains how recovery took her on a journey of self-discovery, where she regained her self-esteem and loving relationships. “Following my own treatment I completed a post-graduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy and I am a qualified EMDR Therapist. I’ve worked in private drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation settings and other agencies that specialise in substance misuse, both in the community as well as the NHS. I also had a very busy private counselling practice.” But, Gerri tells us, this still wasn’t enough, and the desire to help more people experience the positive changes that she went through kept pushing her forward. Thus Regain Recovery was born. Gerri set up Regain Recovery in six acres of tranquil land in the heart of north Devon. “My vision was to create a safe, warm and friendly environment
where individuals struggling with substance use could access treatment and recover, but it had to be somewhere I’d be happy to go myself. My own treatment was very effective for me, but it did not provide the support for my loved ones that they needed. Partners and loved ones have their own needs on the recovery journey, so I was determined to cover the needs of everyone involved.” Gerri is passionate and committed to providing an effective, excellent service to all clients and their families. “My aim is to empower people approaching recovery, enabling them to help themselves and learn as much as possible about substance use and the underlying issues associated with it. With knowledge comes power, and understanding the cause and effect of substance use can be a powerful tool.” Gerri continues: “I am excited to share my recovery journey with anyone struggling to regain control of their own issues. I know how important it is for people to see that success is possible, and this is a key feature of the Regain Recovery programme.”

| ADVICE
HOW YOUR HOME
Have you ever stopped to think about Equity Release but been unsure what it entails? Equity Release experts, Harris Begley Financial, Planning, help to dispel the myths.
W
hen you’re thinking about planning for your retirement, it’s important to take a look at the whole of your finances, not just your pension, to see if you’re on course for the kind of retirement you’d want for yourself. Equity Release was regulated in 2007 and has come a long way in ten years, helping people who are asset-rich to have the freedom to make lifestyle choices they may not have been able to afford otherwise. Designed for people aged 55 and above, Lifetime Mortgages (the name for Equity Release plans regulated by the government) allow you to release capital from your home whilst still maintaining ownership. A Lifetime Mortgage comes with a ‘No Negative Equity Guarantee’ that means you will never owe more than the value of your home. Only when your property is no longer your main residence is it sold, at which point the proceeds of the sale are used to pay off the loan and any accrued interest. Any remaining proceeds are then paid to you or your heirs. Should there be a deficit between the sale price and the loan amount then any remaining balance is written off. Even if you have an outstanding standard mortgage you can still release equity as long as the funds, and/or your savings, can pay off your existing mortgage. You can also choose not to make monthly payments on a Lifetime Mortgage, so increasing your financial freedom. The interest you choose not to pay is simply added to the total you owe and paid when the property is sold. You should bear in mind that a lifetime mortgage is just that, a lifetime commitment and the costs involved, plus the amount you release, will reduce the inheritance you leave. However it may be

For advice on Equity Release contact Steve Rusga, Equity Release Specialist at Harris Begley Financial Planning on steve@harrisbegley.co.uk You may also require advice on the legal and tax issues. HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen. Your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Equity Release will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means tested benefits. The value of pensions and investments can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

HEART
y t i n u m m o c e h t of We catch up with Nick Creasy, Operations Manager for the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs to find out more about this inspiring organisation.
O
Witnessing young people achieve and reach their potential is an amazing feeling! NICK CREASY
ne of the major attractions of Devon is its great swathes of countryside, from green rolling hills and rugged moorland to farm fields. Yet its the rural communities that inhabit this verdant landscape that are its beating heart. Since the 1920s, an organisation has been helping these communities to develop and thrive – the Young Farmers’ Club. The organisation’s mission is to advance the education of young people in agriculture, home crafts, country life, and related subjects. But, as we discover, it is so much more than that. It is a fundamental part of the infrastructure that underpins Devon’s rural communities – giving young members advice and support; equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in life. They also have some fun too! We catch up Nick Creasy, Operations Manager for the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (DFYFC), who lives in a village just outside Exeter with his wife Alison, and their two daughters, Hollie and Jessica. Nick moved to Devon around 25 years ago, initially to work in outdoor education with young people on Dartmoor and the coast, before joining DFYFC in 2004. As Nick tells us, DFYFC has around 1600 members in Devon across 38 clubs, each ranging from around 20 to over 100 members, aged 10 to 26. The county boasts one of the largest membership uptakes, typically in the top three

alongside Yorkshire and Cumbria. 65% of the membership are still directly involved in farming, with the remainder coming from a range of industries from teachers to hairdressers – though many come from traditional farming families, even if they have taken different a path. DFYFC organises a range of activities, including competitions, sporting events and charity work. It also arranges travelling scholarships and an exchange programme with equivalent likeminded organisations globally, to everywhere from Germany to Russia; New Zealand to the USA. Members get to encounter other cultures, learning and sharing agricultural and business ideas and practices that they can put to use back home, gaining crucial life experience which will help them in their careers and development. A huge part of DFYFC’s outreach is its fundraising activity. “Over the last four to five years,” Nick explains, “we have averaged over £100,000 per year through fundraising, to various organisations, locally and nationally, from Devon Air Ambulance to Cancer Research UK.” Nick himself is no stranger to fundraising, having undertaken a mammoth 48-hour, 250-mile Triathlon challenge in 2016, ‘Devon Revolution’, taking in five miles of swimming and 215 miles of cycling, all capped off with a 30-mile run. He raised over £10,000 for the Devon Rural Hub, an initiative set up by DFYFC to help safe-guard its future through becoming less dependent upon outside funding. Together they raised £600,000 in three years to buy and renovate their own
building, which also serves the wider community with meeting rooms and office space for other ventures. DFYFC moved into the building in December 2016, with an official opening by HRH Prince Charles. So what are Nick’s key drivers? “The enthusiasm that young people bring to the organisation. Witnessing young people achieve and reach their potential – seeing their confidence grow – is a real pleasure and honour... it’s an amazing feeling! Because there are strong communities behind the young farmers, in effect this trebles our wider network, in terms of support from the wider public.” For Nick, an organisation that brings people together to share, collaborate, have fun and develop, addressing everything from business plans to mental health, is crucial. Working with partners such as FCN (Farming Community Network), these organisations serve largely as the county’s backbone. Indeed, many ex-Young Farmers’ Club members go on to serve the wider community in later life in various administrative roles. “It may sound like a cliche, but you really do get out of it what you put into it. The rewards, on a personal level, are huge!” As Nick concludes, this stuff really matters: “Rural community is so important to Devon, in terms of its aesthetic, its culture, industry and its tourism. We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of the drive and skill of young farmers in making Devon a prosperous, exciting and dynamic place to live.”

evon Air Ambulance Trust is a charity which raises funds to keep both air ambulances in Devon flying. The charity was initiated in 1986 when Ann Thomas’ son, Ceri was tragically killed as he cycled out of his driveway and into the path of a car. Upon asking what could have saved her son, Ann was told that the quicker someone receives treatment the better their chance of survival. This stayed with Ann, and in reaction she launched the ‘Ceri Thomas Appeal’ to raise funds to set up an air ambulance in Devon. Devon Air Ambulance now saves hundreds of lives each year that would otherwise be lost. In the last 25 years, they’ve managed to buy two helicopters outright, exclusively on the back of public donations. One is based in north Devon and the other in Exeter. The charity was established for and is supported by the people of Devon; with no funding from central government the air ambulance relies solely on our support and in 2017 it cost £6.4 million to keep both helicopters flying. In order to fly into the hours of darkness (currently up to midnight) a network of surveyed floodlit landing sites have been created by Devon communities to support night flying
operations. These can be located on a field, é ABOVE sports pitch, or playing field.
