Welcome Living

to the August issue of Devon

here’s nowhere I would rather be in summer than out on the water, whether that be on a board or a boat, and in Devon we’re lucky to have some amazing locations where you can get your fix of H20. From endless surf rolling in on golden sands to calmer estuary waters, there are coves, beaches and inlets aplenty to enjoy. This month, we’re looking forward to Devon’s many spectacular sailing regattas in our cover feature (from page 18), where racing is frenetic, spirits are high and, even if you’re not a sailor at heart, there’s plenty to see and do for landlubbers too! Our Media Assistant, Bethany Allen, has been on the search for the best swimwear for diving into Devon’s clear water and has found two local brands that not only look good, but are built to last – turn to page 60 to find out more. On the subject of fashion, we’ve selected some stunning jewellery (page 63) to complement your summer wardrobe and on page 65 you’ll find a range of beauty products made right here in Devon, perfect for creating the body beautiful. Us folks here at Devon Living are canine crazy and can’t think of anything better than discovering Devon with our pooches, so I’m delighted this month to introduce our first Dogs Love Devon Living supplement. From page 69, you’ll find everything from dog-friendly places to stay and eat, to walks and attractions that welcome man’s best friend. We’ve also had our tastebuds tempted this month with foodie delights and thirst-quenching tipples, discovering that Devon is a melting pot for culinary and drinks expertise. It’s been a busy month here at Devon Living but a fun one... happy reading!

Trying to find the perfect balance when drinking on holiday It’s easy to start drinking a lot more when we’re on holiday, we’re relaxed, unwinding and we don’t have to go to work in the morning! So, instead of holding back from that extra gin and tonic we’ll happily indulge. Although there’s no real problem at this point, drinking more can start to snowball. Regain Recovery founder Gerri Creedon tells us: “If you’re on holiday with family members and notice that they’re drinking more than is healthy, don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Although difficult to admit, if you do notice that you (or a loved one) are drinking in an unhealthy way, the team at Regain Recovery are there to offer support

for you and your family and start the process of regaining a balanced life. For more information call 01237 405200 or visit www.regainrecovery.com

You’ll be sure to satisfy your wedding party in one fell swoop with the most memorable burger they’ll ever eat. The Fresh Coffee Company This month, the Fresh Coffee Company found that work can be disguised as play, taking its customers to Italy for a tour of the roastery and surrounding area. Based in Belluno in the foothills of the Dolomites, Procaffe operates a tightly controlled and well-oiled machine, where quality control is rigorous and attention to detail is key. It’s about quality, not quantity, and this resonates in everything we do.” If you want to find out more about the range of coffees on offer, get in touch. Warm welcomes and fine dining at the Riverbank Bistro Ever since starting his career in the catering industry at the age of 14, James Priestly, owner of The Riverbank Bistro in Bideford, dreamt of running his own restaurant. This dream finally came true and with the support of his family, he tells us: “I was able to open The Riverbank Bar & Bistro in May 2016.” James has a keen passion for service and food, which is evident by looking at the Riverbank menu. Whether you’re looking for

Driftwood Gallery announces special August exhibition

Fill those empty booking weeks with My Favourite Cottages According to the team at My Favourite Cottages, to fill those remaining weeks, the easiest thing to do is reduce the price as this will tempt a few last minute bookings. Many online directory sites will have a late availability section, so make sure your property is on those pages with a tempting offer. Another effective way to reach people quickly is through social media, so make sure to advertise availability on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Also, consider sending out an email-offer, particularly to any previous guests, as it should be an easier sell. Finally, think about a reduced occupancy offer. So, instead of the usual 10 or 15 guests, offer your large property to six people for a lower rate or perhaps even consider offering short breaks. For more information call 01271 377 432 or visit www.myfavouritecottages.co.uk

SEASON We take a look at the host of regattas set to take place across Devon this summer. WORDS BY

hether a seasoned sailor or shoreline spectator keen to enjoy the revelry, there’s a host of fabulous regattas to enjoy across Devon this summer. Don’t you just love the summer? It’s that time of year when Devon truly comes alive with events and festivities of all shapes and sizes happening across the county, from music and food festivals to classic car events. We particularly love regatta season, as thousands of happy revelers flock to the coast to enjoy a range of watersports events in beautiful waters. The great thing is there’s something for everyone – you might

love competitive sailing or simply having a splash in a raft race. Perhaps, however, you can’t think of anything worse than taking to the water. Well, that’s ok too, because there’s a whole host of fun things going on shoreside without needing to get wet! Expect fireworks, fancy dress and fabulous food to name just a few of the activities awaiting your arrival. So, we take a look at some of the regattas headed to Devon’s south coast this summer, between them offering something to cater for all tastes, including barrels of family fun.

Torbay Royal Regatta 2018 (25th to 27th August)

Salcombe Gin 2018 Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta (5th to 10th August)

We kick things off in Salcombe, a beautiful seaside town on the Kingsbridge estuary, in the South Hams, in the South Devon Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty. Salcombe is favoured for its pretty streets lined with independent bistros and boutiques, and, of course, the stunning sailing waters it gives direct access to. The Salcombe Gin 2018 123rd Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta, from Sunday 5th to Friday 10th August, will see the town alive with sailors, as hundreds of boats of all shapes and sizes take to the water to enjoy competitive sailing. Geared towards those with a keen interest in sailing, entries must be made in advance of the event. For more information and details on entry, visit www.salcombeyc.org.uk

Salcombe Town Regatta

The Torbay Royal Regatta is one of the oldest events of its kind in the country, and takes place this year from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th August. The organisers give us the lowdown. “This year sees an exciting new format with three days of racing over the bank holiday weekend, followed by the Royal Regatta Anniversary Challenge Cup Races taking place on Tuesday 28th. The regatta will feature the VX One Sportsboat Class National Championship and the 29er Class Summer Championship (a new event this year) and will offer competitive racing for IRC Yachts, cruisers, sportsboats, junior dinghies, asymmetric and non-asymmetric dinghies.” So what makes the event such an exciting draw? “Racing will take place in some of the finest sailing waters in Europe, with easy and quick access to the race areas from the sheltered harbour. Over many years, the Royal Torbay Yacht Club has established an enviable reputation in hosting top class regattas and championships; the 2018 regatta will be no exception. The English Riviera is a great place to be in August and competitors can be sure that you will enjoy a friendly atmosphere, cordial hospitality and great shoreside entertainment featuring regatta welcome night, other themed party nights, fireworks and much, much more.” For more information visit www.rtyc.org/ torbay-royal-regatta/

n Take it all in at Salcombe

(11th to 18th August)

The festivities in Salcombe come in two distinct halves, with a second regatta following hot on its heels – Salcombe Town Regatta, which returns this year from 11th to 18th August. Always a popular event on south Devon’s summer calendar, the Salcombe Town Regatta is slightly less formal and competitive than its preceding sister event, focussing on a host of shoreside events, water activities and plenty of family fun. We catch up with the organisers to see what you can expect this year. “Some new events will be joining the old favourites of the regatta, one of these being the water carnival, which is being brought back after a break. Of course, our regatta isn’t complete without our harbour swim (which now requires pre-registration), the mud race, and our firework display on the Thursday night. There is plenty to do for the whole family and regatta programmes will be on sale though out Salcombe.” For more information, visit www.salcomberegatta.co.uk or SalcombeTownRegatta

Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta

é ABOVE Day dream views at Dartmouth

(30th & 31st August & 1st September)

The Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta has a long established heritage, dating back almost 200 years to 1822, when it was a one-day event with three sailing races and just the one rowing race. Over the years, it has gradually grown in size, stature and variety to the week-long extravaganza it is today, with a plethora of events and entertainments organised both on the water and ashore. So whether you’re a competitive sailor or simply a spectator who likes to join in the revelry, there’s something there for you. Now celebrating its 174th regatta, the event goes back to its roots for inspiration. The organisers tell us: “We are delighted to say this year the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta will focus on what is our biggest asset in Dartmouth – the River Dart! We will be looking back to Regattas past, going back to our fundamental roots of a town rowing, sailing and competitive Regatta. We will of course be maintaining the entertainment for visitors, families and residents alike with live music in the Bandstand, Royal Avenue Gardens and

the Regatta Market with its many craft stalls which will be in our unique and beautiful Old Market Square this year. We are thrilled to announce the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta Tennis Tournament will celebrate 50 years of competition in 2018, and there surely cannot be more breathtaking surroundings in which to enjoy a tennis match!” In addition to the ever hotly contested local rowing and WEARA races, and the huge variety of sailing, there’s something for all the family on the comfort of dry land. A week of family fun kicks off with the Royal Regatta Fete on Saturday 25th August, featuring Morris dancing, a dog show, Judy Spiers and much more! Don’t miss the regatta’s popular fancy dress competition, and with this year’s theme being ‘sea creatures’, it’s time to get really creative with your costumes. The fun ‘Spot the Oddity’ competition runs throughout the week, while the traditional Royal Regatta Ball will be held in the Guildhall on Tuesday 28th August.

iven that most of us will spend a third of our lives in the land of nod, it makes sense to invest in a bed that’s up to the job of both supporting you and ensuring a comfortable sleep, night after night. But this doesn’t have to mean sacrificing on style. Emma Casson, Director of Petter Betteridge Furnishers (www.bedexpert.co.uk) introduces the Imperial bed, by Somnus Beds. Boasting a jaw-dropping 26,500 springs in a king size to deliver a superb level of comfort, there’s also something distinctly stylish about these beds. These, along with other ranges including the stunning Matera bedroom collection and the Pearl collection – designed to create a unique centrepiece in your bedroom – are proof that Peter Betteridge really is Devon’s local bed expert! And then we have Prestige Furniture (www. prestigefurniture.co.uk), home to the Augusto bedroom collection. Featuring a dark, natural and oiled finish and soft close drawers, this range is made using solid oak with clean cut lines and angled feet, giving it a modern retro look, one which can be paired with different furniture and décors thanks to its incredible versatility. Through to the living room and the Prestige team recommends the Donatello sofa collection. Especially luxurious, this range is

inspired by designs from multiple cultures around the world. Its upholstery combines buffed, supple leathers and beautifully woven fabrics to create the perfect living room sanctuary. Soft textured weaves and distressed leathers come together in the Donatello range and, when teamed with stripped bare walls and rich dark oak, promise an industrial yet warming look. While we’re on the subject of living spaces, it’s fair to say that more and more of us are choosing to extend ours via the installation of a conservatory or orangery. Four Seasons (www.fourseasonshome.co.uk) in Exeter were recently awarded the prestigious ‘Which? Trusted Trader Ultra Installer’ accreditation, having become the south west’s biggest installer of conservatories, orangeries and single-story extensions. The team specialises in bringing the outside in and at this time of year, especially with the weather we’ve been having, it’s fair to say that doing just that is on the minds of homeowners across the Westcountry. MADE TO ORDER From design to installation Fords are by your side to help create your perfect kitchen.

P

lanning a new kitchen can be overwhelming with all the design decisions and project management of different tradespeople. So it’s fantastic to know that there’s a company here in Devon that can take care of the whole process from start to finish – and ensure the very best materials and build quality for your new kitchen. Fords uses Devon based kitchen manufacturers Quantum, established for over 35 years. Every kitchen is built using proven manufacturing techniques and only the very best materials, and strict quality control means each made-to-order, hand assembled kitchen only leaves the Devon production line after a series of rigorous checks. Combine that with state of the art appliances from manufacturers like Franke, Grohe, Blanco, Bosch, Neff, Siemens and more and your dream kitchen just got a step closer! Fords offer a four-step process: 1) Survey – taking accurate measurements and speaking with you about the room you want to create. 2) Design – using computer-aided design Fords will help you design your perfect room, making the most effective use of your space and marrying your budget and requirements. 3) Supply – source and supply of all elements of your new kitchen. 4) Install – including all electrics, plumbing and tiling and redecorating if needed. Customers speak again and again of the Fords attention to detail, co-ordinaion and communication. In March 2018 Mr Mison in Sidmouth chose a Quantum kitchen, designed by Fords’ Kitchen Project Manager, Darcy Alexander. “We’re delighted with our new kitchen,” says Mr Mison. “Darcy’s attention to detail and sound advice on finishes and colour was second to none. He also conscientiously monitored the installation and was a great support and help as the works progressed and quickly overcame any minor queries that arose.”

é ABOVE Visions are easily brought to life with help from the experts at Fords ç LEFT The Fords team know a thing or two about bathrooms too!

Every Fords kitchen also comes with a 25-year no quibble guarantee on cabinets, door and drawer fronts from the date of installation. That means that in the very unlikely event that any of these items fail during ordinary circumstances it will be repaired or replaced free of charge. What more could you ask for? Drop into the Fords showroom in Sidmouth soon and seek inspiration from a range of displays as well as taking a look at a selection of taps, radiators, door handles and other essentials to make sure all the details of your brand new kitchen are just how you want them.

THE BEST BURGER IN DEVON? A burger joint bursting with unique flavour combinations and a buzzing atmosphere to boot.

F

DISCOVER MORE All takeout packaging is 100% biodegradable or compostable. Straws are either paper or food grade stainless steel and the steel straws are also available to buy from both restaurants, from which 50p of the profits will be donated to local environmental charities to help reduce plastic pollution.

ounded by two passionate foodies, Jenna Heasman and brother-inlaw Vince Aggett, MEAT59 brings an ultimate feast of flavours to the table. Vince found his flair for the kitchen while working as an apprentice chef in the army aged 16 and Jenna found her passion for food whilst living in London for six years, during the time that the street food scene was really taking off. The pair often spoke about opening a burger restaurant together and finally decided the time was right in 2014. Jenna tells us: “After lots of help from friends and family who chipped in with truck loads of DIY, quirky ideas and many, many tasting sessions, MEAT59 was born.” With restaurants in Torquay and Exeter, MEAT59 is now well established among the foodie industry with awards under its belt such as Devon Street Food Awards’ ‘Best Dish,’ South Devon and English Riviera Awards’ ‘Restaurant of the Year,’ as well as being voted the ‘No.2 Best Burger Joint’ in the UK by Tripadvisor, and it’s not hard to see why! Run from the ground up with all staff involved in the business as a whole, this humble team are well known for their exceptional customer service alongside delicious food. Jenna and Vince are proud to source the majority of their meat from trusted south west suppliers, such as the award-winning butchers, Gribbles. This local approach means that they don’t compromise on

quality, and patties are mixed and pressed by hand in the kitchen every day. It’s not just the meat that’s locally sourced either, as the buns are baked fresh using MEAT59’s own recipe by local bakers. The signature MEAT59 burger comprises of a 6oz hamburger pattie, pulled pork, chorizo, black pudding and M59 burger sauce, providing the ultimate meat feast for burger lovers. Despite the name however, there are also highly praised vegan and veggie options too. At the Exeter restaurant, Meat59 also cook up a storm in the mornings and provide hearty breakfast options packed with flavour; we have our eye on the M59 full English or the pancakes with fresh fruit and maple syrup, yum! This burger restaurant creates a rustic and welcoming atmosphere, providing mouthwateringly good burgers that will leave you satisfied in every way. Passionate about music as well as food, you’re guaranteed to have a good soundtrack to accompany your meal and don’t be surprised if you see the MEAT59 burger stand at a festival near you this summer!

TO YOUR DOOR Introducing Veg In A Box, bringing the goodness of local farm produce straight to you.

R

DID YOU KNOW? Julie and Bela now collaborate with other like-minded businesses to introduce new foods and flavours, such as the vegan How on Earth range, Clive Pies and the delicious Greedy Fox seasoning, to name a few!

un by Julie Corcutt and her partner Bela Dobrovenszki, Veg In A Box started out as a gift between friends and has since snowballed into a thriving business. Julie tells us: “The boxes looked so colourful and healthy that I couldn’t resist posting pictures on Facebook, the online community must have agreed because we were soon inundated with requests for outside orders.” What initially started as a small gesture for close friends soon began to take off as a viable business. Julie explains: “We approached Dart Fresh Produce in Topsham and after seeing the fantastic local produce that they offer, we decided to use them as our sole supplier. Their policy (and now ours) is to support as many local farmers and producers as possible!” Unwittingly, Julie and Bela had discovered a box-sized gap in the market, providing an easy way to inject a healthy dose of fresh veg, fruit and now meat into our lives. They use three local butcheries for the gourmet meat range: the award winning Veyseys of Cullompton and Organic Farm, Beech Ridge Farm and the Salcombe Meat Company. Having a box full of goodness delivered directly to your door cuts out the middle man and means that you’re not only saving time – you’re also supporting local

farmers. Another plus is that the veg boxes contain fresh produce that doesn’t have to be wrapped in plastic, decreasing the plastic pollution that inevitably affects our coastlines, countryside and lives generally. From humble beginnings, Veg In A Box now has a combination of delicious fruit and veg boxes to suit all tastes, as well as the Butchers Block range for meat lovers, and even a healthy eating range tailored to go alongside diets such as Slimming World. The boxes can suit any budget and provide an easy way to get your dose of fruit and veg. What’s more, Julie and Bela are happy to tailor a box exactly how you want it – all you have to do is give them a ring or use the message box on their website. Having won numerous awards such as ‘Best Newcomer Devon Life Food and Drink Awards 2015’ when they first started up, and ‘Devon Life Independent Food Retailer of the Year 2017’ last year, the company continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to watching them grow!

Founder Cosmo Caddy tells us: “We will be hosting individuals and groups of people to come and learn about gin making, produce their own bottle of gin under our gentle guidance and even design their own labels”, allowing you to discover the art of gin making and create your own bespoke bottle of handcrafted gin. TAKE THE

Tarka Trail Follow in the footsteps of Devon’s favourite otter with a day or two spent exploring the Tarka Trail.

T

he approximately 30-mile route in north Devon known as the Tarka Trail takes in all the same sights, sounds and smells of our favourite otter, from Okehampton on the fringes of Dartmoor to the county’s tip in Lynton. The area it covers is designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve – an area comprising terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems – and as you wander along its more wild stretches, you can begin to place yourself in the shoes of Henry Williamson, the man who diligently studied the natural order of this beautiful region as it unfolded before his eyes, bringing it animatedly to life in what is, to many, one of the most apt literary renditions of the north Devon countryside to date: Tarka the Otter. Throughout the novel, we follow Tarka on his fish-finding travels up and down the Taw-Torridge rivers, and it’s hard to ignore the raw beauty of the countryside that Williamson conjures in our minds as we follow this plucky young otter. But it’s not all plain sailing for our river-dwelling hero. One thing that tends to stand out to readers is the constant threat of man, and the hunt becomes part of life’s struggle. Williamson’s portrayal of it is based on his own experience with the Cheriton Otter Hounds, who he observed on

| LIFESTYLE hunts that took place on what now forms part of the Tarka Trail. Indeed, prolific predation across the country was almost responsible for the species’ extinction, however, in recent years, the otter population has once again been on the rise, and as you make your way around the Tarka Trail, if you know what to look for, you’ll likely find signs of their presence. Difficult to spot, according to the UK Wild Otter Trust (UKWOT), the otter has an acute sense of smell, hearing and eyesight, with its eyes placed at the top of the head, enabling it to stay alert while the rest of its body is submerged, so don’t be disheartened if you don’t see one! The UKWOT website has plenty of tips on how and where to spot otters and their signs, as well as a host of info-sheets that you can download.

www.ukwildottertrust.org

ì TOP RIGHT Thankfully, the UK otter population is once again on the rise

The route itself offers superb views across the mouth of the Taw estuary and features a number of fantastic sculptures and shelters, offering some great places to stop and simply enjoy your surroundings, so why not pack a picnic? What’s more, even if you don’t manage to spot any otters, with mud flats, woodland, hedges, streams and meadows, the landscape here has a vast array of habitats that are home to an equally vast array of fauna, and you never know which are likely to show themselves!

Beginning in Braunton, the trail is easy to follow. It’s also flat and traffic-free, making it perfect for families. Continuing from Braunton along the banks of the river Taw, you’ll pass through Chivenor and cross the tributary river Yeo. From here, you can either take a detour into the town centre of historic town, Barnstaple, or continue on towards the Torridge estuary, past Instow and Bideford – also great places to stop, with lots of cafés and restaurants. This really is a beautiful part of the world, and a visit here is proof that the rich environment we see in Tarka the Otter is not the figment of one writer’s imagination. It’s real, and as Williamson himself once said: “It is all here in Devon, if you just happen to see and hear or smell it”.

Taking it slow Introducing Red Rock Brewery’s award-winning Honey Beer, from the acclaimed Slow Beer range.

W

hen it comes to innovative, quality beers, local south Devon based brewery Red Rock likes to go against the grain, quite literally! Not satisfied with their alreadyextensive range of delicious, handcrafted traditional real ales, the team have recently introduced a new range of edgy, craft brews to the market as well. Their award-winning Slow Beer range is the latest, and actually the most unique. Using the finest botanic ingredients, which are locally sourced as much as possible, the Slow range, as the name suggests, is produced slowly so that you can experience more of the flavour. There are four beers in the range: an Original Wheat, a strong and punchy Elderflower IPA, a new and improved Blackberry tipple, and the Honey Beer. Impressively, The Honey was awarded gold this year in the Speciality Light Beers category, fending off strong competition from 200 other entries from across the south west. Red Rock owner Lewis Parkes tells us: “The award was a great achievement for us. Since we established the brewery over ten years ago, we’ve developed three different ranges of beer. There’s still demand for our real ales, but our Slow and Craft ranges are quickly growing in popularity, so we’re spending some time refining their recipes

to keep them fresh and distinctive. This is the best part of the job, and it remains at the very heart of our ethos here at Red Rock.” The Honey is a sweet, pale beer made with local Devon honey from the Haldon Honey Company. Owner Neil Graham has around 200 beehives dotted around Devon’s well known Haldon Hills, producing a lovely natural honey from clover, bramble, sweet chestnut and bells heather. Lewis has perfected the Honey Beer recipe, successfully pasteurising the honey at an exact temperature in order to achieve the best flavour. If you’re out and about in Devon you can get your hands on Red Rock’s delicious Slow Beer range in The Taphouse & Bottle Shop in Newton Abbot, the Totnes Brewing Company and at the Real Food Store in Exeter. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled too, as there are only a limited few barrels of their caskconditioned Honey Beer available, and it’s already generating a lot of interest with local establishments. Let’s hope you’re lucky enough to try it before it runs out!

SALCOMBE We take a visit to Salcombe’s Fortescue Inn, the perfect base from which to explore the area. ABOVE é Salcombe's picturesque streets INSET ì Luxurious and spacious bedrooms

T

he town of Salcombe hugs the hillside that surrounds it with houses crowding towards the estuary in a bid to get as close to the water’s edge as possible. Salcombe is the most southerly of Devon’s towns and consequently, has a warm, almost Mediterranean climate, creating an environment in which palm trees and even lemons and oranges can grow. Situated at the southern end of the Salcombe Estuary, the Fortescue Inn is ideally located to explore everything that the historic fishing village has to offer and is only minutes from the South West Coast Path. A couple have said of their stay: “This is our second time here – we’re walking the South West Coast Path and this little gem of a B&B is right on the path. Really convenient and such a lovely place to stay.” There are also two tranquil beaches nearby, and a ferry runs regularly to East Portlemouth on the other side of the estuary. If you want to explore quieter parts of the coastline then join the South West Coast Path and wander down from the path to secret beaches and hidden coves. The rooms at the Fortescue are an attraction unto themselves, beautifully

finished with wood detailing. The wooden floors give a rustic feel to your stay and the high ceilings create a sense of space. There are six rooms to choose from, each containing either a high spec waterfall shower or a luxurious bathtub, perfect to sink into after a day of exploring. Whether you get a tranquil garden view, or a view of the picturesque streets, the fact the rooms are on the top floor affords you privacy with all the amenities of the pub close to hand. One family has said: “We stayed in two rooms which were beautifully presented, with lovely showers and amazing baths which our children refused to get out of… this is a great place to stay in the heart of Salcombe and we look forward to returning again!” Making a stay at the Fortescue is well worth your while. Don’t take our word for it though, visit the inn and see for yourselves!

Delicious, local, seasonal food and a place to rest your head at Badgers Holt in Dartmoor.

"

s far as we’re concerned, nothing beats a proper Devon cream tea in a beautiful setting, and we’ve found the perfect location for enjoying exactly that in Badgers Holt, in the heart of Dartmoor. Where better to stop and rest your feet than in a former fishing lodge in a beautiful countryside setting, serving delicious homemade food using the finest local produce? Badgers Holt is situated in Dartmeet, giving direct access to the surrounding beauty of Dartmoor, and making it the ideal stop-off point or base for your countryside adventures. Recently taken over by Emma and Simon Beswick, Badgers Holt is a real family-run enterprise. As such, they’ve taken great care to create a warm welcome and inviting atmosphere, treating visitors and guests as part of the family too. Indeed, as one reviewer puts it, “the instant warmth and care given by the hosts from arrival was incredible and we felt we were amongst friends.” You really can’t ask more than that! Of course, the food needs to stack up too. Thankfully, this is an area that Emma and Simon are extremely passionate about, as is highlighted in their ethical and varied menu which changes with the seasons to showcase Devon’s showstopping produce. As an independent business, they are keen to support other local businesses too in their offering –

the idea that what is good for one is good for all. Just some of the local delights you might find on the menu include Devon Farmhouse Cheddar, Jail Ale Chutney, Dartmoor beerbattered fish, and Devon roast beef. If you’re looking for a real treat, you simply have to try the ‘Badgers Holt Scone Cake’, which is homebaked to a secret recipe, over 50 years old, from the original Holt owners – the Ways. It is made as a large cake, then cut into individual wedges – truly delicious! Equally, the selection of fruit and savoury scones come highly recommended and are well worth sampling too.

ì INSET Food is certainly one of Emma and Simons' strengths!

Emma and Simon are keen to keep Badgers Holt an ethical business, recycling wherever possible, using biodegradable products and working with responsible suppliers. They also support local charities, including the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, helping to put back into the countryside community they hold dear to their hearts. From Badgers Holt you can enjoy some stunning riverside walks offering breathtaking scenery, including one towards Bellever. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous you could hike towards Yar Tor or Sharp Tor to sample yet more awe-inspiring views. The team at Badgers Holt know the area well and can advise you on the best local beauty spots and routes to take, ensuring you get the best out of your visit. With so much to experience, why not make a proper trip of it and stay the night? Badgers Holt has beautifully presented accommodation in the form of two separate apartments, one facing towards Yar Tor and the other with views over the River Dart. Both are styled in a chic country fashion, offering calming respite after your day out on the moor. If you enjoy a spot of glamping, keep a look out for the launch of the new riverside Lotus Belle tent, bringing you even closer to nature. As you reluctantly drag yourself away, all that’s left to do is pop into the gift shop and peruse the gorgeous British made wares to

take home and remind you of your visit – or perhaps to find that perfect gift for friends and family back home. Whether you’re just popping in for lunch on a day’s adventure or staying for a few days, you’re sure to leave Badgers Holt feeling warm, contented, wellfed and already planning your next visit.

EXPLORE

Honiton

A historic market town nestled in the beautiful countryside of east Devon.

T

he historic market town of Honiton is encircled by the rolling hills and wooded groves of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Providing the perfect base to explore this incredibly picturesque part of Devon, it boasts a wealth of shops, bistros and pubs to enjoy. A favourite among locals is The Holt Pub Restaurant and Smokehouse, which serves a mouth-watering selection of locally sourced produce, with a tantalising twist of flavours. www.theholt-honiton.com As you walk through the streets of Honiton, evidence of its rich history can be seen from its striking church to the weekly market, which adds a vibrant array of fresh produce, flowers, clothing, jewellery and antiques to Honiton’s already impressive Georgian high street. After perusing the market stalls, head to the Allhallows Museum and discover the story behind Honiton Lace, an intricate and finely crafted bobbin lace, traditionally used in royal items – it even graced the fringes of Queen Victoria’s wedding dress! www.honitonmuseum.co.uk Almost as famous, is Honiton Pottery; no longer made but highly collectable, pieces can be found in the plethora of antique shops around town, and most likely among market stalls too. If you happen to visit during mid-July then be prepared for hot pennies flying through the air and clattering to the streets. Honiton’s quirky tradition of hot penny throwing is re-enacted every year, and dates back to the 13th century. To prolong your cultural introduction, make sure to visit the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, an award

winning public art gallery, which supports and promotes the practice and understanding of contemporary arts and crafts through an inspiring season of exhibitions and workshops. The gallery is housed within a remarkable Grade II listed town house, formally the home and studio of artist Thelma Hulbert, and displays a permanent collection of her beautiful artwork. www.thelmahulbert.com If you want to don your walking boots and explore the wilder reaches of Honiton, then head to Blackbury Camp and discover the subtle dips and rises of this Iron Age dwelling. The enclosure is oval in shape, and arguably the most remarkable feature of the camp is the front entrance. Defined by large ramparts, it’s the best-preserved aspect of the dwelling and features a pebble-paved floor taken from the shores of the river. www.english-heritage.org.uk The area surrounding Honiton is a picture of rural bliss, and there are numerous walking trails to explore. When travelling from London to Land's End, Daniel Defoe described the view from Honiton Hill as: “The most beautiful landscape in the world,” hinting at the spectacular views you can expect to see on any ramble through the town and into the surrounding countryside. The River Otter rises to the north of Honiton in the Blackdown Hills and meanders through the town on its bid to fuse with the ocean at Budleigh Salterton, turn your gaze to the banks and you may just see the playful, dog like features of its namesake, the ever-elusive river otter. For those of you with green fingers, head to the Otter Nurseries

Garden Centre, located just fifteen minutes west of the town and boasting an extensive garden of 100 acres and a multitude of different plants for sale. www.ottergardencentres.com If you want to get a dose of the coast as well as the country, Devon and Dorsets' acclaimed Jurassic Coast is only a 20-minute drive away, with the beautiful coves of Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth offering stunning stretches of sandy beach. Arguably, the highlight of Honiton’s seasonal calendar is the acclaimed Honiton Show, taking place in early August. The show is held in the heart of the east Devon countryside on a 140-acre site, and is a showcase of the best local farming, produce, crafts and rural skills. The show is delighted to be hosting the West of England Hound Show this year, and has already attracted a whopping 400 trade stalls making it one of the largest business and social events in east Devon. www.honitonshow.co.uk Any visit to this remarkable town is set to be full of culture, adventure and a refreshing dip into the rolling countryside of one of Devon’s most picturesque areas. Honiton is surrounded by countryside on all sides but one and has a wealth of attractions to offer – there’s something for everyone to discover and explore within this beautiful and historic market town.

Dive into Devon We delve into two of our favourite swimwear brands based right here in Devon. WORDS BY

Bethany Allen

DISCOVER MORE For the Davy J range, old fishing lines and other ocean waste is deconstructed back into the original polymer and transformed into durable swimwear via the e-conyl regeneration system, a truly innovative concept!

W

hether it's just a leisurely swim, or something a bit more adventurous, most swimwear is a real let down (literally) when it’s put to the test. Luckily for us, I’ve found two incredible swimwear brands based right here in Devon, Davy J and Zennor Bikini, both creating beautiful bikinis and costumes that are built to last, and to look good! Founded by Helen Newcombe, Davy J creates durable swimwear from recycled waste. This brand stands out to us not only for its sturdy designs, but also for its eco-conscious attitude towards sourcing material sustainably and promoting a circular economy. We touch base with Helen to discover the Davy J story. She tells us: “Davy J swim suits are built to last, they’re designed to survive a dive and stay on in the waves and they’re all manufactured here in the UK from nylon waste.” Our favourite is the Red Bikini, we love the blaze of colour set off with the supportive black bands, and the cut is really flattering for any chest size. Now on to Zennor Bikini, we’re completely in love with the colourful designs and cheeky cut of this range. Founded by Davina Stickley, the brand is inspired by Cornish folk tale The Mermaid of Zennor, Davina explains: “Our aim is to allow women to set their inner mermaid

n Zennor's gorgeous Coco Palms Halter bikini

free.” Like Davy J, Zennor Bikinis are built to last, made from durable Italian material in a seamless design that’s comfortable as well as supportive. Our in house favourites are the Coco Palms Halter featuring a stunning tropical palm tree print and the Bamboo One Piece, incorporating vintage style stripes with a burnt orange reversible design for an entirely different look. That's another great aspect about this range – all the costumes and bikinis are reversible; so you get two bikinis in one! Both brands have seen a gap in the market for swimwear that meets our needs in terms of durability, functionality and style and we’re in love with the concepts behind them! Davy J represents a new way of approaching waste, transforming it into sturdy swimwear that won’t lead to any slippages and Zennor creates eye-catching designs, ‘for the real mermaids of this world.’ I’ve surreptitiously been reaching for my wallet this entire time and definitely recommend purchasing one for yourself!

Head to Victoria Sewart Jewellery and discover contemporary and unique designs that stand out from the crowd.

è RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM There's a whole range of unique designs on display at Victoria's beautiful Plymouth gallery

L

ocated within the Barbican area of Plymouth, (often visited due to its waterfront position) Victoria Sewart Jewellery is nestled amongst the cobbled streets, artists’ studios and boutique shops that define this area of town. Established in 2006, Sewart Jewellery was one of Plymouth’s first contemporary jewellery galleries and stands out from the conventional crowd, stocking extraordinary and inspiring work from British designers to fill both the gallery and the online shop. Collections range from traditional materials with precious metals and stones to contemporary ones including acrylics, stone, aluminium and recycled materials. Victoria trained as a jeweller and designer at The School of Jewellery in Birmingham in 1991 and founded her jewellery business soon after. Having completed her Masters degree in 2005, Victoria’s work changed direction and she began to make sculptural fine art pieces. This inspired her to establish a gallery to showcase her own work and that of her contemporaries. She tells us: “There’s a huge amount of talent and skill right across Britain and the south west. We are extremely proud to be able to represent and showcase the very best local designers who are continually committed to creating outstanding and imaginative work.” It’s not just the artists who are well represented, customers are treated to a personal service from friendly staff who are all jewellers themselves, and who possess a huge amount of knowledge between them to help you find the perfect item. Whether you’re looking for an engagement ring, a special birthday gift or simply a treat for yourself; through the gallery it’s also possible to buy a totally unique item straight from the studios of some of Britain’s most talented designers. Plus, collections are only produced in small batch productions or one off designs; you can even work with the designers to create a bespoke item of jewellery to your personal specifications.

The gallery has grown in reputation over the years and customers now visit from all over the world. If you want to have more of a personal touch, you can always take part in one of the popular workshop classes held above the gallery and make your own jewellery. There's even the possibility of making your own wedding ring!

artington Crystal has been around for more than 50 years, having grown to become one of Devon’s best-known brands. Each year, thousands of visitors flock to see the skilled glassmakers at work in the Torrington factory and usually leave with a bargain purchased from the extensive factory shop. As the UK’s only remaining factory scale crystal producer, Dartington offers a fascinating modern insight into an ancient working craft. The Visitor Centre has hands-on activities for kids and grown ups, where everybody can learn the story of Dartington’s early years and development. Unlike the large number of tourist visitors, Devon residents have the benefit of being able to drop in at any time to take advantage of the team’s latest offers and promotions. As well as a great deal on its top-quality and ‘slightly imperfect’ crystal, the factory shop covers two floors and includes leading brands of ceramics, tabletop gifts, homewares and fashion, so if you want to equip your home or find that perfect gift, a trip to Dartington Crystal is well worth it! If it is a gift you’re looking for, the skilled in-house engraver can add a message or words to any piece of glassware, creating a gift that will be treasured forever.

We explain why Dartington Crystal is a ‘must-visit’ this summer. Other attractions include the Pavilion Café, where you can enjoy freshly made snacks, drinks, a full lunch or a Devon cream tea. Next door is The Ginspiration Devon Gin Bar, which exclusively serves gins made in Devon, as well as a range of wines and beers, and as you might expect, should you happen to like the goblet that your drink is served in, you can easily pick up a set from the shop! If you like gin, on Thursday 16th August, Devon’s mobile distillery, Still on the Move, will be parked at the Torrington factory, distilling a special English Crystal Gin. You can watch it being made, sample it and even purchase a bottle for yourself – one of only 140 produced that day. You can even have your bottle engraved! So, whether you have a thirst for all things gin, are looking to restock your glass cupboard, or want to gain an insight into a craft that’s centuries old, a trip to Dartington Crystal should definitely be on your 2018 summer itinerary!

DOG DAYS

in Devon

Whether you and your pooch live here, or you’re visiting with your pup, Devon is a great place to explore on two feet and four. Walkies!

With hundreds of miles of coastline, one of the best ways to explore Devon is on foot. If you’re drawn to the sea then following the South West Coast Path (SWCP) is perfect for you and your dog. This way-marked footpath is England’s longest and allows you to discover Devon in all its glory. Choose from a gentle stroll or a longer hike and discover everything from seaside towns to ‘off the beaten track’ coves on the way. The south Devon stretch of the SWCP includes many of the main towns in the region including Seaton, Sidmouth and Salcombe. Over on the east

coast, which is also known as the Jurassic Coast, you’ll find nearly 100 miles of footpath that will take you from Exmouth in Devon as far as Studland in Dorset. Inland, you’ll find lush valleys and stunning moorland just waiting to be explored. Dartmoor is a ‘walkies’ paradise with miles of open moorland, shady forests and plenty of rivers and streams to cool off in. There are times throughout the year when you need to be mindful of new born lambs and ground nesting birds but well-behaved dogs (and their owners!) are always welcome.

Garden capers

If you and your pup prefer a more leisurely pace then a visit to one of Devon’s dog-friendly gardens or castles makes for a great day out. The National Trust has some excellent places to visit full of fun things to do with your dog – Saltram, overlooking the river Plym, and the gothic splendour of Knightshayes are some of our four-legged favourites. You can also sniff out some of Devon’s rich history at both Dartmouth and Totnes castles.

ç MAIN Dogs absolutely love Devon!

Sandy paws

No trip to Devon would be complete without a walk across one of our amazing beaches. Take a ball, or find a driftwood stick, and your pup will be happily splashing in rock pools and playing fetch until the sun goes down. Although some beaches ban dogs in high season, many in Devon don’t and some are dog friendly all year round. On the north Devon coast you can play in the dunes on Saunton Sands or stroll along the estuary at Instow. Over on the south coast Bantham is great for a doggie paddle while a visit to Exmouth will give you a great ‘out and back’ stroll along Queens Drive. As some seasonal restrictions do apply, it’s always best to check on the internet for the latest details before you travel.

Doggie treats

After all those canine capers you and your pooch will no doubt have worked up an appetite and a thirst. Luckily, many Devon cafes, restaurants and pubs welcome dogs. In the spring and summer, you can enjoy lunch on the many sunny terraces with a glass of something cold while your dog rests under a shady parasol. Autumn and winter days bring with them cosy seats in front of roaring log fires, perfect for warming cold paws while you enjoy a winter tipple.

A place to rest

At the end of a day’s exploration there are a host of dog-friendly hotels, cottages and campsites to stay across the county. Over the coming pages you’ll find lots to choose from, some include dog bowls, dog beds and doggie treats while others have bedrooms that lead helpfully straight out on to gardens. We all know that a happy dog equals a happy owner, so while your pooch is well catered for you can sit back and relax. www.visitdartmoor.co.uk www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk www.nationaltrust.org.uk www.english-heritage.org.uk www.visitdevon.co.uk

THE scoop Ideas for you and your pooch, from places to stay to dog-friendly outings.

Good times afoot at the Hound of the Baskervilles! After a complete refurbishment, the Royal Oak in Ashburton reopened last year as the Hound of the Baskervilles. New investment has seen a fresh new look emerge, with a ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ and Sherlock theme running throughout.

Air conditioning in the main restaurant and café, plus a cosy bar and pretty courtyard gives every hound and its owner a unique experience. Offering quality pub food from breakfast time onwards, as well as local Devon roasted coffee and scrumptious cakes, plus the team’s own gelato ice cream and ‘dog lollies’ and special pick and mix dog lolly bites, this really is a hound’s haven! Naturally made, hypo-allergenic doggie meals in various flavours are also available, as well as take away picnics for pooches, which go hand in hand with the wonderful array of nearby walks. For more information call 01364 652700 or visit www.thehoundofthebaskervilles royaloak.co.uk

Waggly tails welcome at The Salty Monk, Sidmouth Light and airy with views of award-winning gardens, The Salty Monk restaurant in Sidmouth has held two AA Rosettes for the last 13 years, offering a fantastic wine list and being recommended in the Good Food Guide as well as by Michelin! There are plenty of walks nearby too that you and your pooch can enjoy together, and because the restaurant is open to well-behaved hounds on leads, you can sate your country air appetite in style while your furry friend gets their own water and food bowls, as well as treats, bedding, a cage and gourmet dinners!

Keep their tails wagging at Odle Farm Holiday Cottages! Odle Farm’s quiet location is perfect if you want to get away from it all, yet just a short drive will take you to the bustling market town of Honiton. Situated on the border between Devon, Dorset and Somerset, by staying at Odle Farm you’re within easy reach of all that this stunning region has to offer. Delightful holiday cottages are arranged around a peaceful courtyard, surrounded by ten acres of grounds, and are equipped with everything you need to make your stay relaxing – from TVs and DVD players, to comfortable beds, toasty wood burners, hot tubs and an all important view.

So, if romping down the National Trust Byes into Sidmouth, enjoying a paddle in the sea at Jacobs Ladder, before heading back to first class dining (for man and dog alike!) sounds like your cup of tea, be sure to visit The Salty Monk in Sidmouth this summer!

The best part is that four legged friends are made extremely welcome at Odle Farm, with Willow and Wisteria cottages both being dog friendly. There are plenty of walks available too, thanks to the nearby Blackdown Hills countryside.

Grooming

Offering a range of grooming services, whether it’s introducing your new puppy to grooming, or hand stripping your show dog in preparation for an upcoming event, Honiton Dog Grooming, headed up by Georgie Sansom, is a fantastic local business with years of ownership experience with a number of different breeds. Georgie is OCN Diploma 3 qualified, having been hand stripping various breeds for over three years, including her own dogs. She also shows one of her dogs – an Italian Spinone – who qualified for Crufts last year after placing first in Junior class in her first show! It’s fair to say then that Georgie knows her stuff and is well practiced in the traditional form of hand stripping, which is a crucial grooming technique for a number of breeds. If you want to keep your dog looking top of their class, why not book an appointment with Honiton Dog Grooming? For more information call 07746 414005 or visit www. honitondoggrooming.wordpress.com

There are four luxurious shepherd huts to choose from should you want to try something different, including two new, roomier huts with their own en suite toilets! For more information call 01548 843635 or visit www.salcombeshepherdhuts.co.uk

Walk the South West Coast Path or head to the nearby dog-friendly beach; visit Salcombe and soak up the estuary views,

Take a load off at the Mitre Inn, Witheridge The Two Moors Way – Devon’s coast-to-coast walking route – passes through the village of Witheridge, with The Mitre Inn sitting directly on the route, providing walkers, cyclists and dog walkers comfortable overnight stays as they make their way from one shoreline to the other. Traditionally decorated, there’s the distinct feel of an old country pub here, but historically the building has served a number of purposes, including housing the local vicarage. It also served as the village’s first veterinary practice, so it has a history of being dog friendly! The menu features a host of English pub favourites, using free range seasonal meats to

create weekly specials, all geared towards sating your country air appetite. The five comfortably furnished rooms (two of which are dog friendly) offer the perfect sanctuary after a long day walking from coast to coast. At the station you’ll find a selection of seating areas, including a formal dining space, more laid back sofa seating as well as a wonderful beer garden in which you can relax with your pooch. As well as serving great food, the walls here

are adorned with art and the space is lucky enough to play host to a wide range of touring exhibitions, which are usually updated every six to eight weeks. So, for a hearty meal made of Devon’s rich, local produce, followed by a leisurely perusal of the current exhibition, be sure to head to Puffing Billy Trading Co. this summer! A PERFECT We discover Equafleece, keeping dogs warm and dry in Britain’s great, and often wet outdoors.

fit

F

ABOVEì For working dogs, Equafleece is great for enduring the winter RIGHTè Both dogs and their owners stay warm with Equafleece BELOWî Equafleece is great for dogs of all shapes and sizes!

ounded 18 years ago, Equafleece has swept across the UK, becoming extremely popular with animal owners looking to combat our oftentumultuous climate. In fact, it was the rainfall of Dartmoor – one of the most windswept areas of Britain – that spurred this fantastic product to first be imagined. Equafleece was first designed to keep a horse dry whilst exercising, without it sweating in a nonbreathable rain sheet, and without the wind getting under it and scaring the animal, hence the ‘equa’ part of the name! The first rolls of Polartec fleece were bought in November 2000 and in 2002, after several prototypes and a lot of field tests, the first dog coat was sold. Since, the company has gone from strength to strength and is vouched for by owners, vets, hydrotherapists, breeders, handlers and, most of all, by the dogs themselves! The Equafleece team are pioneers in the field of technical wear for dogs, and it’s been hailed by experts as fuss-free and effective. Indeed, back in 2010 it won an award from the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust for innovation and for its contribution to working dogs at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace. So what makes Equafleece so effective? The properties of fleece mean it keeps your dog dry in the rain, without ever needing to reproof it. Body heat and fleece combine to create a waterproof layer, and provide an easy-to-wash, easy-to-dry and very easy-towear answer to the challenging conditions faced by our pets as we explore the most dramatic parts of Devon. Equafleece has a range of products, from coats and slim suits for dogs (with 43 stock sizes and 12 colours to choose from), to neck warmers, jackets, fleeces and socks for humans; from chihuahuas to great Danes, Equafleece aims to make time spent outside with your dog as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, encouraging your furry friend to relish every minute spent outdoors, even in the depths of winter!

ometimes it can be really difficult to know where to start when planning a holiday. There are so many options out there and when you want to explore somewhere new, you don’t actually know where to stay or what to do. That’s where Holidaysplease comes in, an online travel agency that does most of the legwork, so that you don’t have to. Allowing you to discover the best and most trustworthy places to stay without having to trawl through various sites, with Holidaysplease it’s all done for you and to the highest possible standard. The team of travel advisors have an average of 10-15 years’ experience in the travel industry, and often have personally visited the hotels and villas they advise on. We hear from Gretchen Kibbler, Expert Travel Consultant for Holidaysplease. She tells us: “I can offer everything from sunkissed beaches in the Maldives, touring holidays in China, India and the US, wildlife holidays in Africa, Canada and Sri Lanka, adventure holidays in South America and cultural visits in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Anything is possible.” It’s this all-encompassing service that has lead to Holidaysplease winning awards such as: ‘Online Travel Agency of the Year 2017-18.’ Gretchen continues: “Your honeymoon is perhaps one of the most important yet

exciting holidays you will ever experience, so it’s vital you speak to a specialist who understands how much hard work and planning goes into it.” The team at Holidayplease will allocate a dedicated advisor to work with you and organise the perfect honeymoon to suit your specifications. Gretchen explains: “Honeymoon experts are the most experienced in the business and can provide expert advice on all aspects of your honeymoon… once you enquire, you can relax knowing that we will be busy working behind the scenes on your special holiday plans.” Holidaysplease holidays are all ABTA and ATOL protected too! This goes for luxury holidays as well, whether you’re planning a private getaway for two, a family escape or a trip with friends. Holidaysplease benefits from being an independent company, meaning they search the whole market rather than favouring certain holiday packages over others and consequently can find the best holiday to suit your needs and budget.

•EXPERIENCE• A H E L I C O P T E R F L I G H T TO T H E I S L E S O F S C I L LY The Isles of Scilly are truly unspoilt, a paradise lying just 28 miles off of the coast of Cornwall; a magical cluster of islands offering up long white, sandy beaches and crystal-clear turquoise seas that are more reminiscent of the Caribbean than the UK. It’s now even easier to discover why visitors return time and time again, as you can connect to Scilly on the recently launched Island Helicopters service, with daily scheduled helicopter flights available for the first time in six years. Enjoy a stress free check in at Land’s End Airport before hopping on board a brand new tenseater AW169 helicopter, from which you can enjoy the mesmerising views before arriving just 15 minutes after take off! Alternatively, you can opt to fly on fixed-wing Skybus planes from Exeter, Newquay or Land’s End, or enjoy a relaxing sail from Penzance on the iconic Scillonian III passenger ferry, soaking up the views of the Cornish coastline along the way. However you travel, make 2018 the year that you make the connection to Scilly.

2. BROOK GALLERY

Mark Rochester has broadened his area for this exhibition, finding locations along the south Devon coastline from which to paint en plein air. Exploring Ladram, Salcombe and Peak Hill, he has captured the cliffs and seas of early summer. Paintings from his native north Devon coast have also broadened, with canvases one-metre square.

Currently showing in Devon’s renowned Brook Gallery is the stunning exhibition of paintings and prints selected by Anthony Frost. During this time Brook’s partner consultancy practice, also in Budleigh Salterton, will extend the exhibition space and be open to the public, between 6th July and 12th August on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, or by appointment. PROTECTING

e r u t u f r you A staggering one in ten of us will face a period of sickness absence of more than six months during our working lives. We talk to Harris Begley Financial Planning about what you can do to plan for such an event.

W

hilst you may have life cover in place, the question arises of how would you, or your family, cope if a wage earner was off work for a long period of time? (Source: Demos survey, April 2013). One route is to take out an Income Protection policy. This product is designed to pay out a tax-free* monthly sum in the event that you are unable to work due to illness or injury. In general, it will pay out until you are either well enough to return to work, have retired, the policy ends, or upon your death; whichever happens first. (*Under current legislation, tax year 2017/18) Each policy will have different conditions, such as cover choices against not being able to work in your own occupation, or any occupation, and you would obviously need to disclose any pre-existing medical issues. Initially it’s useful to establish if you would only receive the Statutory Sick Pay of £89.35 a week in the 2017/18 tax year (paid for up to 28 weeks, if you qualify), or if there are additional benefits from your employer or the state. Once you’ve got an idea of this income stream, you can then decide when you’d like your income

protection cover to kick-in (called the deferred period). The longer you wait the cheaper the premium will be. It pays to be sensible about how much you require until you’re able to return to work (or have retired). In the same way you wouldn’t need a pay out commensurate with buying a new house if the kitchen floods, your potential pay out via an income protection policy should be calculated in a similar way (up to a maximum amount). And again, the less you need, the lower the premium. The sobering fact is that each year, a million people in the UK suffer a prolonged absence from work due to sickness, and up to half of those would find their savings have run out after just a few weeks! So, it makes sense to plan accordingly by contacting Harris Begley now for a free initial financial health check. (Source: The Chartered Insurance Institute, 2016 report).

You may also require advice on the legal and tax issues. HM Revenue & Customs practice and the law relating to taxation are complex and subject to individual circumstances and changes which cannot be foreseen. The value of pensions and investments can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. Income Protection is a complex product, with a vast array of options, so it is essential that you take advice. As with all insurance policies, terms, conditions and exclusions will apply.
