he last four weeks have been busy ones for the team here at Devon Living. Regatta season is in full swing and it’s been great to watch some fantastic racing take place on Devon’s waters. We spent a glorious weekend in Salcombe enjoying all this beautiful coastal town has to offer. On the subject of sailing, it was a pleasure to catch up with Jamie Watts of Sail Shades Direct (page 41 , who has diversified in the summer months from making boat sails to sunshades, all from up-cycled material. Seeing how you can incorporate your outdoor space into an extension of your home inspired us to look at the latest interior trends for this year. Our cover feature focuses on the latest ideas for your home, where we hear from some of the county s top interior experts on how this season s styles are influencing the décor of Devon homes (page 20).

The local approach
Meat59 are supporters of the local approach, sourcing as much of their produce as possible from a close network of local suppliers. Owner Jenna Heasman tells us: “I think it’s important for people to start looking at meat differently, to see it more as a treat which doesn’t necessarily have to be included in every meal and to think about buying quality meat over quantity.” With this in mind, Meat59 source all their meat from local butcher Gribbles, fresh buns from Oliver’s akery, fish from ibsons laice on agdalen road, beer from Bays, Exeter, Red Rock and
Wild Beer breweries and ice cream from Yarde Farm. Jenna continues: “Sourcing quality produce locally means we play our part in reducing mass farming and have less of an environmental impact than if we rely on companies based further afield. For more information call 01392 672043 or visit www.meat59.com

Crafting and designing bespoke architecture Louise Crossman Architects have been crafting and designing bespoke architectural schemes across Devon and Somerset for over 25 years. Working regularly within sensitive locations, and often with listed buildings, the team love to enhance the enjoyment and use of spaces. With consideration to the building, location, history and their clients’ aspirations, and by also considering the external landscape and natural light available, their aim is to create homes that will be a delight to live in for years to come. Whether you want to create a light and modern space or prefer to retain traditional features (or maybe even a mixture of both), why not have a chat with one of their architects to discuss the potential of your home? Agnes Arber was awarded first class results at both UCL and The University of Cambridge for her BSc and Masters in Botanical Studies. She went on to become the first female botanist to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first woman to receive the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London. Agnes Arber lived botanics. From her work, we wanted to create a fitting tribute. A convergence of nine herbs and fruits, distilled together in the same pot. With savoury, earthy notes of juniper, coriander, and angelica - complemented by the warm, spicy undertones of cassia. Finally woven with a sweet, acidic, refreshing bloom of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit and just a twist of liquorice. Ode True Ale This month we’ll see the result of a hotly anticipated collaboration between two award-winning south Devon-based businesses, Red Rock Brewery and Ode True Food, with the launch of the new Ode True Ale. Brewed using Olicana hops and oats, this brand new brew will be available to buy in the award-winning ODE outlets, located in and around Shaldon, a stone’s throw from the brewery. Lewis Parkes, owner of Red Rock says: “We are two businesses who share the same values in terms of quality and sustainability so we’re really excited about this collaboration.” Red Rock will be showcasing this ale, and a selection of handpicked beers, ciders and

Le Pisani brings Mediterranean flair to Seaton Known for its fresh, Mediterranean menu, fantastic Italian coffee and its comfortable, stylish surroundings, Le Pisani has been wowing diners since 2014 thanks to the combined expertise of Maltese chef Ray Pisani and Italian barista Franco Pisani – the eponymous founders who share the name by pure coincidence! On the menu, Ray tells us: “We take pride in using fresh and local ingredients. We prepare each dish to be delicious and unique, taking your taste buds on a sun kissed, Mediterranean journey.”

Opened with the help of Ray’s nephew, Darren, and his wife Rosabelle, who now run the restaurant, it’s already proven a resounding success, offering seaside visitors the chance to sate their sea-air appetites with Le Pisani’s delectable menu. t’s that time of year again; the inexorable onset of autumn is beginning to creep once more to the front of our minds, causing us to consider whether or not our homes are up to the challenge of the wind and rain headed our way. This isn’t just about ensuring our central heating is up to scratch – although that is a valid concern given the snows of early this year; it’s also about how comfortable we feel in our home environment. After all, we’re inevitably going to be spending a lot more time between our proverbial four walls. Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has declared a ‘Colour of the Year’, something that’s been taken to the bank since by interior companies the world over. This year, the colour is ultra violet. Complex and contemplative, according to Pantone, ultra violet "suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries of what is possible", which, given the recent discovery of water on Mars is decidedly relevant! But comfort at home differs wildly from person to person, family to family, even county to county (not least here in Devon!), and the world of interior design itself is constantly moving. Whether it’s via soft furnishings, upholstery, or even the way in which we light our homes, we all have different ideas of comfort, and there are countless companies across the globe who will wax lyrical about the many, latest ‘must have’ trends that are taking the industry by storm. This makes it very di cult to put our finger on exactly how to bring our homes on trend. What we can do is give you a number of top tips from just some
Arrital Kitchens
of Devon’s interior experts, whether they follow the current trends or not, in the hope that you will find something to inspire the autumnal changes your home needs. Let’s start in the kitchen. We catch up with Nick Manton, owner of Arrital Kitchens (www.arrital-kitchens.co.uk). “Once upon a time kitchens were rooms hidden away at the back of the house, but now they are the focal point of our homes, a place where we gather our friends and family to socialise, and so can be an extension of our personalities!” As such, most of us introduced colour into our kitchen via colour co-ordinated accessories and appliances, or perhaps by painting a feature wall, but now, Nick says, “we have the opportunity to embrace colour in a way we’ve never been able to before. “With autumn slowly approaching, trends are showing that bold, rich colours with metallic or deep woods will be popular. Copper and rose gold is proving a hit with taps and sinks, adding an extra earthy, warm exuberance” – ideal as temperatures start to drop! Embracing the ‘coloured kitchen’ takes confidence, and as we ve already mentioned, it’s not to everyone’s taste, and nor should it be. “If we were all the same, life would be boring. But if you want to make a statement with your kitchen, then you are in for some fun!”

Nick notes another interesting trend of textured kitchen unit doors. “The leather look and feel effect is very much in vogue at the moment, which is why we’ve added the latest offerings to our showroom here in Plymouth.” In many homes, kitchens and dining rooms are one and the same space, so if you’re updating your kitchen, furnishing your dining room to suit is part and parcel of the job. For those who love blending their homes with the long stretches of rolling Devonshire countryside, what could be better than some real wood furniture? If this sounds like you, you’ll find an emporium of different styles and combinations at the aptly named Realwood Furniture (www.realwoodfurniture. co.uk). With generations of experience, Realwood’s team of local craftsmen can create bespoke furniture that’s designed to fit your exact requirements, so you can find a piece or set that matches not just your kitchen/dining room, but any space in your house. f equal importance to our kitchens are our bathrooms. At Studio One South West (www.studioonesw.co.uk), the team not only supplies all your bathroom and tile needs, but are happy to install them, too. This comes with many years of experience – owner Mark Fowdon has been in the industry for over 14 years – and in the showroom, experienced staff are always on hand to help you make the right decision for you and your home. Indeed, Mark tells us: “Our customers get the very best advice available,” so if your bathroom is in dire need of a makeover, you know your hardearned cash will be well spent.
Studio One
Speaking of bathrooms, catching up with the team at La Fabrico (www.lafabrico.com), we learn how they stock the largest tile in the world – measuring three metres by one metre and just three millimetres thick! Made by Techlam, these come available in an amazing collection of colours, but most popular at the moment is the Steel Collection. Particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, an industrial look has also gained popularity, offering a surprising array of possibilities. So, we’ve covered bathrooms and kitchens, but we’ve yet to shed any light on how to, well, light them! To do so, we caught up with the team at Dusk Lighting (www.dusklights.co.uk). According to them, “as autumn creeps in and the daylight hours reduce, the need for lighting becomes ever more apparent, and achieving both functionality and a cosy ambience is key. This can be achieved easily with minimal expense" – music to our ears! “The bulbs that you select will make all the difference. In the UK we have a preference for warmer light bulbs,” thanks to our position in the northern hemisphere. They stress that more neutral white bulbs are more appropriate for a kitchen or bathroom, where functionality, as we’ve mentioned, is key. Through to our living spaces and the Dusk Lighting team encourage us to make use of floor and table lamps. The best thing about these kinds of lamps is that they can create a warming and welcoming atmosphere that most of us want in the colder months, but when spring and summer roll around, they can easily be stored.

Along the same vein, the team at Iroka (www.iroka.com) tell us that, “textured wallpapers, rich in colour, help give a room character and drama and also set a base colour to repeat throughout your interior in soft furnishings.” Similarly, according to Shuttercraft (www.shuttercraft.co.uk), florals will be popular, whether incorporated in wallpaper or fabrics, or even fresh bouquets of the real thing. But that’s not all. The team also expects light blue to make its way into the home. A versatile shade, light blue will be a daring yet elegant touch next to the traditional autumn colour palette.” In contrast, Shuttercraft also suggests that dark wood tones will make a resurgence, flaunting the natural beauty of wooden furniture and accessories, while adding a touch of retro glamour. RETIRE TO THE COAST Make the most of your retirement on the English Riviera.

hether you want to regularly enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, take an early morning dip in the sea or simply relax and take in breathtaking coastal views, we may have found you the ideal retirement location. Torquay is one of the most popular holiday destinations and retirement hot-spots on the English Riviera with its iconic palm trees, busy harbour, international marina, sandy beaches and array of continental style cafés and restaurants. It has all you could want without having to venture far from home. Located above Anstey’s Cove in the desirable Wellswood Village area of Torquay, Churchill Retirement Living’s latest development, Sachs Lodge, is a collection of 33 one and two-bedroom apartments exclusively for those aged 60 and over. Built on the site of the former Gleneagles Hotel, which inspired John Cleese to write the classic sitcom Fawlty
Towers, this new development has been named in memory of Andrew Sachs, fondly remembered by many for his role as Manuel in the series, and who passed away in 2016. There is, however, nothing ‘Fawlty’ when it comes to this new development! Apartments feature generous balconies that allow you to take advantage of the enviable location and views across the dramatic Lyme Bay. From Sachs Lodge there is easy access to the 22 miles of South West Coast Path that takes you through some stunning Geopark scenery with many wonderful vantage points along the way. So, if you’re an active retiree then this allows you to have the best of both worlds. Retirement should be all about making life easier so there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy living here. The development is looked after by Millstream Management Services, a specialist property management company so that everything from fire and security monitoring and building insurance to window cleaning are all taken care of. The beautifully landscaped gardens and communal areas are also taken care of by the Lodge Manager,

STURDY AS AN
oak
We discover the innovative designs and incredible projects that Carpenter Oak has worked on.
T
he Carpenter Oak team are experts at working wood, and have been designing, hand making and raising timber framed buildings for the last thirty years. In that time, they have worked with some of the best architects, engineers and builders in the country, with works including extensions, remodelling and new builds, as well as large public and commercial buildings all over the UK and overseas. Carpenter Oak brings its innovative designs to the forefront of its projects, providing clients with the chance to invite the outside beauty of the woods into their homes. Having looked at a selection of their builds, I’ve been blown away by the attention to detail and quality of craftsmanship that goes into each and every project; it’s clear that the team love what they do and work together seamlessly to build incredible structures. Domestic builds still provide the majority of their work, operating from four yards in Devon, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Scotland. Managing Director Luke Copley-Wilkins tells us arpenter ak prides itself on a flexible approach to designing and constructing interesting and challenging timber framed buildings and all our projects have the client’s brief at the heart of the process.” The Carpenter Oak team applies decades of experience to their projects and expertly manage the smooth transition from the initial concept to a stunning timber-framed building. Luke continues: “You can relish the process of seeing your ideas come alive from first concept design to opening the front door for the very first time.

One aspect of building that the company has identified as being of paramount importance, and which can be one of the most challenging elements for their clients, is organising tradespeople to come together at the right time and in the right order thereby avoiding delays that will have a knock on effect to timings and budgets. And as a solution to this problem, Carpenter Oak now offers a new service called ‘Complete Build’ – an easier approach to the build process from design to completion. Luke continues: “We wanted to be able to offer our clients more. By combining our creative design with end-to-end project delivery, we bring the full range of our professional experience to the table.” By drawing on their experience of constructing hundreds of unique frames and buildings, Carpenter Oak have developed a step-bystep process to take a plan through design, build and post construction. This process includes capturing a client's ideas and drawing up the initial designs that will lead to more detailed drawings, refining designs
in response to the client's feedback, then on to construction and ultimately moving in to the house. This turnkey solution enables clients to see a coherent and assured project evolve from start to finish. Therefore allowing you to rest assured that your project will run smoothly and e ciently, without having to worry about organising different teams, with Carpenter Oak you can rely on one team from the offset, reducing the space for error and providing a service you can trust. Luke explains: “Carpenter Oak want to offer more options to more people who recognise that we stand for a certain level of quality and service. We want to provide that same level across every project we undertake, ‘Complete Build’ is the natural next step for the company and is a very exciting time in our history.” So, if you want to create a fully functional timber-framed space then contact the Carpenter Oak Team and discover the beauty of introducing oak into your home.

BELOW Sail Shades add a whole new dimension to any outdoor space
uring the summer of 2012, Tamar Sailmakers found that work in the sail loft had slowed up, as it traditionally always does for sail makers at this time of year. Owner, Jamie Watts, was in the workshop wondering what he could do to keep his staff busy, when a customer got in touch and asked if Jamie could make him a sail shade for his garden – having been unable to source a bespoke solution elsewhere. This was the inspiration Jamie needed to set up Sail Shades Direct and since then the summer months have been spent developing and building sail shades for a wide range of clients, across various locations. Jamie has been working with fabrics as a sail and cover maker since he was 17: the academic route ust wasn t for me, explained Jamie, “I wanted to be outside working, creating things and dealing with people. I’ve worked across the south west and internationally, including sail making in both Asia and urope. ith nearly years know-how of specialist marine fabrics, Jamie offers a huge wealth of experience. In 2017, Jamie was lucky enough to be approached by the family run Italian company, Giulio Barbieri, which has been offering a range of both fixed and retractable systems for outside spaces since the 1990s. “I have visited the factory in northern Italy several times and we work closely together to create new solutions or improve on existing designs, specifically for the climate, says amie.
The team offers a range of shade solutions from sail shaped sunshades through to fabric roof conservatories and Jamie and his team have now installed lots of these systems across the West Country. However, living and working in this area can often throw up some unique and awkward places that a client is trying to either shade or keep dry, but this doesn’t faze Jamie. “We build all of the sail shades in our small production loft just outside Plymouth. As specialists in bespoke solutions we love a challenge – from the town house court yards of Totnes to the really exposed balconies of Salcombe we will look at any job big or small. Our mission is to deliver bespoke and standard shading solutions for both commercial and residential customers, whether they be in the est ountry or further afield.

alcombe Retreat commands an exceptional position above the cliffs of Salcombe, the most southerly point in Devon and therefore an area that enjoys an almost Mediterranean climate – especially during the incredible summer we’ve had this year. Salcombe Retreat stands out not only because of its enviable position in Salcombe and breathtaking views but for the style of lodges that it possesses. As you walk inside your cabin-like lodge, it’s as if you’ve entered into an elegant apartment; each lodge boasts luxurious interior design, fully-equipped kitchens and bathrooms, not to mention the floor-to-ceiling windows that flood them with light and really make the most of the panoramic rural and sea views. Sleeping up to six with three bedrooms, the lodges are a tranquil retreat to which you can return after a day spent exploring this stunning area of Devon and whether you’re looking for a family getaway, a couple's retreat or a stay with friends, you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday in the utmost comfort and in a truly stunning location. Situated right next to the South West Coast Path, you can wander along the cliff paths and spend your days discovering secret coves, swimming in secluded bays and gazing at the beautiful scenery and then return to your luxurious lodge, sink into the sumptuous sofa and read your book – or maybe even enjoy the last of the sun with a glass of wine on your own private terrace. Onsite, there are no main roads so kids can run around and

explore without the worry of tra c and you ll find a spacious field and play area equipped with football goals, as well as a dog exercise area so your canine companions can race around and tire themselves out too. Another addition that sets Salcombe Retreat apart is the onsite shop stocked full of local produce – the site is surrounded by farms and freeholds meaning that the shop is able to source its produce from within a 20-mile radius. With freshly baked loaves from a bakery nearby, homemade jams and chutneys, Salcombe Gin, and glass bottles of milk and cheese from a dairy farm, it doesn’t get much fresher than that! Located above Soar Mill cove, this secluded bay is a 15-minute walk away and is only accessible by walking or by boat, meaning you can enjoy the bay without fronds of people crowding the shores. And, if you want to explore further afield then head into the vibrant and busy town of Salcombe – a popular holiday destination with unique Devon charm, surrounded by picturesque beaches. You can even get the South Sands ferry that runs from Salcombe to the picturesque beach of South Sands; or try your hand at one of the water sports available and then enjoy a Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream. Also close by is the delightful market town of Kingsbridge located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here, the streets are lined with shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants and the town hosts a popular Farmers Market, which is held on the quay every Saturday. Then there’s the scenic river
location of Dartmouth. With winding streets and a strong maritime heritage, Dartmouth has a wealth of attractions to offer, from a 14th century castle to private charters on 43ft luxury yachts The surrounding area is filled with attractions and fun things to do, and the best part is that a stay in your luxury lodge will be considerably cheaper than choosing to stay in the centre of Salcombe – and it’s also an extremely peaceful location. A holiday here really is the perfect escape from the stresses and demands of daily life, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your holiday in the utmost comfort. The luxury lodges are simply divine and the enviable position atop the cliffs provides stunning coastal and rural views with a wealth of things to do on your doorstep. So, get in touch with the team today and discover the tranquility of Salcombe Retreat for yourself, because trust us – it’s worth it.

Happy camping Introducing camping at its most luxurious at Ilton Farm Campsite in the South Hams, featuring the glorious Salcombe Shepherd Huts.

W
e love discovering new experiences in this beautiful county. So we were delighted to hear about Ilton Farm Campsite, home to the ultimate luxury camping experience: Salcombe Shepherd Huts. The campsite is set on a gorgeous working farm in the popular South Hams, with rolling hills cascading down towards the beautiful coastline below. The farm is run by husband and wife team, Jon and Vicki Rogers. We catch up with Vicki, who tells us more about their story, and what you can expect at this coastal country idyll. “I used to be a teacher,” says Vicki, “but I gave it up to run the huts and have more time at home with my children and animals – I haven’t looked back since!” As well as its fabulous touring pitches for tents, motorhomes and caravans, the campsite’s crowning glory are undoubtedly its sumptuous shepherd huts, which are handcrafted right here in Devon, as Vicki explains. The craftsmanship is truly reflected in the huts’ beauty and quality. They are all built from wood sourced from sustainable Devon trees and have a very low carbon footprint. It’s really important to us to be eco-friendly and support local businesses. They feature solid wooden exposed beams, beautiful wooden windows, and a mezzanine full double bed with a bespoke solid wooden staircase, which creates much more floor space, really enhancing the entire experience.”
What’s more, two new huts arrived this year, which are even bigger and more luxurious, with underfloor heating, an en-suite, a kingsi e bed and two further bunks, as well as a wood burner and barbeque. Vicki continues: “The private outside space creates the feeling of exclusivity. No matter how you spend your holiday, you’ll come away with lifelong memories to share with your family and friends.” Why not top the experience with delicious Devon produce delivered directly to your pitch for your arrival, courtesy of the local online farmers’ market? Salcombe Bakehouse will also deliver freshly-baked goods each morning, if you wish. The campsite is dog friendly and open all year round, whilst another notable feature is the brand new, “all singing and dancing” shower and toilet block, complete with underfloor heating, a laundry facility and family wet room. It’s the perfect base for exploring the South Hams. With every detail carefully considered and every conceivable need taken care of, a stay at Ilton Farm Campsite will guarantee an experience that leaves a permanent smile on your face!

BOUTIQUE CHIC
WORDS BY
Bethany Allen
Experience a bespoke approach to shopping where comfort comes first and luxury is key, at Angies boutique.
I
ncreasingly our shopping experience is starting to resemble more of a free for all than a tailored approach and although big department stores have a massive range of clothing, it’s often no longer unique. Department stores have also become somewhat sterilised and we find ourselves being herded through crowded changing rooms and on to the checkout with not so much as a hello. Luckily for us, there are still a select few boutique stores that put the therapy back into retail. Angies is one such store. Located in Budleigh, this boutique store brings everything back to the experience of shopping rather than the act of purchasing itself. As you approach Angies you’re greeted with a welcoming and bright exterior with French windows that give a sneak peak of the delights in store. The interior is just as inviting with sumptuous wool carpet and ornamental chandeliers that give a luxurious feel, so that you can enjoy beautiful clothing in beautiful surroundings, the way it should be. We hear from owner Jane Levingston, who tells us: “I wanted to create a bespoke form of shopping – the chance to escape the frenzy of everyday life in favour of a civilised haven. Angies is a place to relax, unwind and browse, somewhere you can come and spoil yourself, and others, with things that are beautiful, inspiring and above all, unique.” At Angies you’re surrounded by gorgeous treats and gifts; collections are sourced from around the world and ane is constantly finding new items so no visit will ever be the same. Jane continues: “We want to transport you into another world, a kinder, gentler place where you can let your hair down and relax. Angies is more than just a boutique - it’s somewhere you can feel fabulous and pampered.” Don’t take our word for it though, head to Angies for yourself and discover a bespoke shopping experience that couldn’t be further from the frenzied atmosphere of department stores. Use it as your excuse to take a break and surround yourself with beautiful clothing. It’s certainly my idea of a heavenly day out – the very best retail therapy there is.

SURGERY OF THE FUTURE é ABOVE Professor Andrew Toms, Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit INSET Stryker Mako robotic arm
H
ip and knee replacements are some of the most common types of operation performed in the UK, but did you know that the ‘Exeter Hip’ created in 1970 is the most implanted and successfully cemented hip stem in the world? Furthermore u eld ealth xeter ospital is in the top three UK hospitals for hip replacements, and Orthopaedic Consultant Professor Andrew Toms was recently cited as the one of the best knee replacement surgeons in the UK in a Daily Mail poll. The use of robotics and artificial intelligence is becoming more prevalent in healthcare but u eld ealth xeter ospital is the only hospital in the south west to have robotic arm technology and one of only ten in the UK. The pioneering Mako robotic arm allows the latest generation of hip and knee replacements to be inserted with even greater accuracy. So far this year, Exeter has treated over 100 patients using the robotic arm – the most out of any UK hospital. Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Keith Eyres, of Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit, tells us: “From my perspective, robotic arm assisted surgery is the pinnacle of what the industry can offer us as surgeons to support the accuracy of what we do. Accuracy means faster recovery, a higher chance of a joint returning to normal function and a new joint that lasts longer. The level of accuracy we are able to achieve with the Mako is as close to perfection as is possible, which means patients are more mobile, more quickly.”
Exeter’s joint replacement teams utilise state-of-the-art robotic technology to deliver cutting edge surgery with pinpoint accuracy.
As Professor John Timperley, Exeter Hip Unit and former President of the British Hip Society, explains, the technology helps surgeons provide patients with a personalised, surgical experience. “The Mako improves accuracy by importing a CT scan of the patient joint before the operation. Numerous site markers are overlaid onto the scan, effectively creating a 3D map of the joint, which the surgeon can then easily navigate and, with the robot’s assistance, perform the procedure with pinpoint accuracy.” Other than the operation itself, one of the concerns about surgery can be the waiting time. However, Hospital Director Paul Taylor tells us: “With no waiting lists at our hospital we're able to help people get on with life as quickly as possible. Even if you don’t have private medical insurance you can access our care by paying for yourself.” So, if you are having hip or knee trouble, or are awaiting surgery, why not head along to one of the upcoming open events to discover more about the services provided? You’ll be doing so safe in the knowledge that you’ll be treated by those among the very best in the profession.

here’s nothing as refreshing as a cool gin and tonic at the end of a long day, at least not in my opinion! Plymouth Gin incorporates a remarkable mixture of botanicals used by bartenders around the world and is savoured by many. Carefully handcrafted in an original Victorian copper still, Master Distiller, Sean Harrison, uses juniper berries, lemon and orange peel, orris and angelica root, cardamom and coriander seeds – and pure, soft water from Dartmoor National Park to create that distinctively mellow, aromatic taste. We hear from Visitor Centre Supervisor, Rose MacInnes, who has been with the distillery for 21 years, Rose explains: “We’ve won several awards over a three year period – which is incredible considering the competition we’re up against!” When speaking about the staff and their efforts to make the experience truly enjoyable Rose tells us: “Everybody works extremely hard in the distillery, we have 14 members of staff on the team – covering the shop, production, tourism and the cocktail bar, winning is good for us and it’s also good for Plymouth.” The distillery presents three different tours so visitors can enjoy a range of experiences. There is the standard 40-minute tour including a history of the distillery and overview of how Plymouth Gin is made. Visitors can then choose from a complimentary miniature gin or savour a Plymouth Gin and tonic at the Distillery Bar. Then there’s the connoisseur’s tour for 90 minutes, which includes the tour plus a unique tutored gin tasting session and finally, the master distiller s tour which lasts for two and a half hours and features a tour, tutored gin tasting session and a distilling master class; giving you the opportunity to hand craft your own gin – and take a small bottle of your creation home as a memento. Rose continues: “We work closely with the city’s hotels supplying discount tickets and also provide prizes to be auctioned at charity events.” The distillery is an important and historic part of the Barbican, which has been its home since 1793 and is well worth a visit on any trip to this historic seaside city!

ith a heritage in shoes spanning four generations, White & Son Shoes bring a wealth of expertise to their store in Sidmouth. The present owner Steve White’s great grandfather established the company in Dorchester in the early 1880’s and since then the shop has continued to go from strength to strength. Earlier this year, the very best from across the footwear sector met at the seventh Annual Footwear Industry Awards 2018. And White & Sons Shoes Sidmouth were among those lucky enough to take home a gold award, clinching the top spot in the Ladies Independent Footwear Retailer of the Year category. Owner Steve White and Manageress Anne tell us: “We are immensely proud to have received such a sought-after award, for an independent shop in Sidmouth to be voted the Ladies Independent Retailer of the Year against the best shops in the UK is a huge achievement for us.” White & Son Shoes offer an incredible selection of quality footwear, stocking instantly recognisable brands such as: Hotter, Rieker, Josef Seibel, Ecco and the award-winning Sketchers, which are joined by carefully selected brands from the
very best manufacturers in the world. The company also has an enviable reputation as a fitter for ider itting shoes with customers travelling from far and wide to tap into the knowledge and expertise that can only be gained from years in the supply of quality footwear. The true value of shopping at an independent shoe shop is the range of brands and styles available and The White & Sons team personally hand-pick every shoe featured in the shop. Anne tells us: “Our team visit all the major footwear exhibitions, carefully selecting shoes and sandals that will bring that comfortable smile to your face.” Sidmouth, often considered the jewel in the east Devon crown, offers a unique mixture of independent shops and the Ladies Independent Footwear Retailer of the ear award firmly puts hite on hoes at the very top of the footwear shopping experience. Owner Steve White sums it up perfectly stating: “White & Son Shoes is a shoe shop, not a shop that sells shoes.”

AN INDIVIDUAL
APPROACH Outstanding all round-education with an independent flair and extensive support for pupils.
N
ext year, south Devon’s Trinity School celebrates its 40th birthday and the 2018/19 school year promises to be another year of celebrating successes both inside and outside the classroom. Being located in Teignmouth, this coeducational school which welcomes both day and boarding pupils, creates a whole host of opportunities for pupils to learn in and enjoy their natural surroundings. The school site overlooks the town and offers glorious views of the sea, which means pupils regularly get involved in various water-based activities throughout the year including sailing and canoeing. A vast extra-curricular offering means full use is made of the school’s short distance
away from Dartmoor, with increased participation at all levels in the Duke of Edinburgh award and a triumphant effort from Trinity’s Ten Tors team being highlights of the last academic year. The facilities onsite are equally impressive and include a tennis academy, outdoor heated swimming pool and large sports fields. It’s not just outside the classroom where Trinity School succeeds. Last year marked one of the best years of participation in national Independent School Association (ISA) competitions, with the national award for work in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects coming as a result of hard work by pupils, staff, and other members of the Trinity community. The school was recognised for its Science Buskers club, which has grasped the imagination and curiosity of many pupils by taking part in experiments and bringing science to the wider community at other schools, events and even at the Devon County Show! Other ISA awards were awarded for work in art and design fields, with sport remaining a particular strength. Last year saw Trinitonians on the podium at many national level sporting events including swimming, tennis, athletics and football. Regionally, Trinity’s sportspeople have performed very well with first places in a range of sports and

consistent representation of the south west at national level. Trinity is also well known for its highly rated pastoral care, which was rated outstanding in its most recent qualitative inspection. It’s the family feel of this school that means pupils know who to turn to if they need help, and a proactive approach is taken by staff because of the emphasis and focus on each pupil as an individual. The ‘whole school’ approach, where pupils can take their first steps in education at the Prep Lodge nursery at three years old and finish at the end of ixth orm as they enter the professional world or higher education, highlights the close-knit nature of Trinity School. Last year also saw a tremendous set of summer results at Trinity, with 50% of results at A Level/BTEC awarded A* or A grades. This achievement shows that the school, which remains non-selective, supports all individuals to reach their maximum potential. However, as an independent school it is important for Trinity that pupils get more than just an education. Exams and results are important for future life but universities and employers are increasingly looking for well-rounded individuals with experiences not necessarily gained by sitting in the classroom. Trinity’s Sixth orm encompasses this by ensuring that
by the time pupils leave for university or employment, they have the life skills needed to succeed independently. Updated boarding accommodation means both day and boarding pupils get opportunities to prepare to live independently. Trinity understands that parents lead busy lives and to help with this the boarding offer is flexible and offers wrap-around care for pupils in the younger years. Many members of the boarding community are full boarders, but a lot more families are utilising more flexible offers. These include weekly boarding with weekends at home, as well as a flexi-boarding option where pupils can stay at school on an ad hoc basis when required. uch flexibility is appreciated by parents and pupils alike and the close knit boarding community creates a welcoming and safe environment. Anyone interested in finding out more should visit the website, and if you would like to visit the school and see the individual approach first hand then Trinity welcomes parents and prospective pupils to get in touch and arrange a tour.

A HISTORIC
VENUE
We explore the historic and beautiful Tavistock Town Hall and what makes it a great wedding venue.
T WORDS BY
Bethany Allen DID YOU KNOW? If you’re planning on having a small ceremony, The Rundle Room is another hall that suits receptions for up to 40 people and both the Hall and Rundle Room are fully licensed for civil ceremonies.
avistock Town Hall was designed by Edward Rundle and opened on 2nd February 1864 as a ball and event venue. The majestic building was constructed of local stone in a Gothic style and makes for a pretty spectacular wedding venue. Imagine the ballrooms from Jane Austen’s novels and you’ll begin to get a feel for the atmosphere of this beautiful hall. Not to mention the fact that it resides in the heart of Tavistock – a historic town that forms part of the West Devon Mining World Heritage ite. traddling the fast flowing river Tavy, below the western edge of artmoor, Tavistock stands in the midst of an area of tremendous natural beauty. If your interest hasn’t already been piqued by this lovely venue then here are a few extra titbits to raise your fancy: the town hall was recently nominated as one of the best wedding venues in the south west and it’s not hard to see why! The spacious hall features beautiful old paintings and a church like interior with high ceilings adorned with chandeliers and intricate dark wooden beams. You're also offered exclusive use of the hall for your day, not to mention that it provides a flexible space with seating for up
to people and standing, plus a stage area for performances and entertainment. lus, the historic stone building with its elegant gothic windows dominates the main square of Tavistock and is an impressive location for any event. e hear from employee, oss Ayling, who tells us: "Allow our knowledgeable and friendly team to help you manage your special day from start to finish, ensuring that every detail is carried out to the utmost standard, leaving you free to simply relax and enjoy your day.” With kitchen facilities and a licensed bar, Tavistock Town all has everything you need for a spectacular event. If it were my wedding, d be tempted to choose a month when the chill is just beginning to creep into the air and the autumnal colours are starting to show, simply because the hall takes on such an incredibly romantic atmosphere as the sun descends and day turns to night.

GET SOME We discover the Life Space Cabin ethos and what inspired Jamie Wilson to start building unique outdoor spaces.
I
n a recent interview with owner and founder of Life Space Cabins, Jamie Wilson, we discovered the story behind this innovative business and what creating unique outdoor spaces means to the team. What’s your background and how has it e ed infl en e o r ine “For nine years, I was responsible for Sales and Marketing at Carpenter Oak, the makers of beautiful green oak homes. I could see that there was a growing demand for people wanting smaller spaces to suit their everchanging work and life balance, and that’s what I wanted to tap into with Life Space Cabins.” Did your travels in Europe in a campervan in ire o to a n t e o an “The sense of fun that living in a small space creates has definitely influenced our cabin work, our VW campervan has many quirks to make it function, from a pop-up roof to a ‘rock and roll’ fold down bed. We love how the van transforms from a car into a tiny home. It’s this thread we enjoy introducing into our cabins – fun features that through their dynamism can transform a space. For example, in the cabin we have just completed, we included a large drop down window shutter. The shutter effortlessly lowers by a series of winches and pulleys and becomes a look out for the family to sit and admire the amazing Dart Estuary view.”
What is the most out-there project that you’ve or ed on o ar “The luxury shed that we’ve just completed near Dartmouth was a real knock out, in more ways than one. The location is stunning and our clients wanted to combine the natural site with great architecture that disappears into the landscape. One major challenge however was constructing the luxury shed on a very steep Devon hillside, and building during the worst winter we’ve seen in a long time. It was all made worth it for the end result though, which encapsulates everything that we stand for at Life Space Cabins: amazing design, attention to detail and of course, the sense of fun that we want to include in every project.” o a e eo e ed t eir a a e “At Life Space Cabins, we want to give people the opportunity to commission a small quirky space that they might not have considered possible before. We are currently working on a project inspired by a grain storage tank; this design will be used as a family craft space. Another project follows a common theme where the cabin is used as an extension of the family accommodation but doubles as a home o ce or Airbnb to generate additional income.”

The space is currently a shed with an al fresco dining area but could easily become a future o ce or even a teenage den for our son Ned.” What materials do you favour and how do o o r et e “Our spaces are built to a super high spec. We believe in delivering responsible, pragmatic, ‘eco’ construction alongside considered design and material choices. Wherever possible, we source materials responsibly and help balance environmental requirements alongside aesthetic desires. We also design and build our spaces for the maximum life expectancy and firmly believe in the old adage, you buy cheap, you buy twice’.” Do you work closely with other local ine e “Working with local businesses and contractors is absolutely a part of our ethos at Life Space Cabins. The West Country has a plethora of skilled businesses and craftsmen and we actively encourage collaboration.”

or some of us the thought of eating an insect or a bug makes us feel squeamish but insects are actually eaten routinely by people all over the world. Edible bugs are packed with protein, vitamins and minerals and we’ve discovered a thriving ‘bug’ farm right here in Devon. Founded by entomologist Dr Heather Gibbard, GreenBee’s vision is to give customers access to British grown insects that can be enjoyed in delicious treats or as ingredients to experiment with at home. Heather discovered entomophagy, the use of insects as food, when she tried her first edible insect seven years ago – a chocolate-covered cricket! “They were pretty good,” says Heather, “a bit like chocolate crispies. I went on to try chapulines (Mexican grasshoppers) in a taco and they tasted amazing, I immediately ordered another one.” Heather goes on to explain that with growing populations, there is a need to start looking at additional protein sources: “Our YumBugs range of products enables us to expand our protein sources and give access to delicious food that our ancestors and other cultures around the world have been enjoying for years.” We learn that eating insects is great for children too as they contain a large amount
good quality, digestible protein and are a great source of vitamins, minerals and linoleic acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6. GreenBee’s YumBug products have been developed to give children a nutritious alternative to high sugar snacks. Heather adds: “In our trials, even fussy children and adults were able to over-ride the ‘yuck-factor’ and tune into their inner curious child and try something new… and love it!” The insects are brilliant animals to farm as they breed very quickly, like to snuggle together and require only a tiny amount of water, space, and energy. Heather has strived to build a cyclic farming system at GreenBee that minimises waste and ensures sustainable products. “Our bug barn is highly energy e cient and we are aiming to incorporate solar panels soon to make production even more green,” says Heather proudly. “And to round it all off, we only use compostable packaging and recycled boxes in which to post your YumBug goodies to you.”
DISCOVER MORE Try GreenBee's Rooty Tooty marble cake, which has three different types of insects in and three different root vegetables, or the Pirate Island Flapjack, sweetened with tropical fruit and covered in gold dust.
DID YOU KNOW? GreenBee’s range of bug-tastic cakes and flapjacks are available to order online and include gluten and dairy-free options.

e hear about the benefits of surrounding yourself with nature inspired or derived interior design pieces from ome aturally owner hristine ockell. hen discussing her ethos hristine tells us At ome aturally, we re not only passionate about creating beautiful interiors we also believe that the places we live and work in should enhance our wellbeing. n an effort to achieve this balance, ome aturally provides interior design pieces that both soothe the soul and look beautiful. hristine continues ome aturally is a sustainable and biophilic interior design studio located at the heart of ovey Tracey, on the edge of artmoor ational park. iophillia is a term that defines our strong connection with the natural world and natural processes. As a species, we have evolved surrounded by nature but as time s gone by, our natural environment has progressively been pushed aside by urbanisation and modern technologies, which now increasingly populate our daily lives. hristine elaborates iophillic design aims at bringing nature back into our interior world as this connection is key to our mental and physical well-being. esearch is revealing that surrounding ourselves with natural materials, features, light, nature inspired colours and prints has a huge impact on the way we feel, learn and work.
As a mum of two young girls, one of whom was born disabled with a range of multi-sensory impairments hristine has learnt a thing or two about the way we interact with the world around us and has discovered how we can enhance the way we live and experience our immediate surroundings through interior design. rom beautifully handcrafted furniture, lighting and accessories with a focus on hand printed, natural fabrics, to natural home scents and local art, the friendly and welcoming boutique features exclusive pieces, including the first chair on the market to be manufactured in bioplastic. hristine explains ur services include free in-store advice, colour consultation, a bespoke curtains and blinds service and of course full interior design, including design for additional needs, with biophilic design consultancy. o, for inspiration on how to design a healthier home or business make sure to visit ome aturally and discover how you can elevate your home, and your mood.
