to Dogs Love Cornwall Living...
As we regretfully say our farewells to the summer, we can at least take solace in the fact that autumn has to be one of the best times for exploring Cornwall with our dogs. As green fades to auburn and leaves begin littering the pathways, there’s plenty for our canine counterparts to enjoy. Home to a number of superb dog-friendly stays (32), pubs (38), beaches (page 41) and cafés and restaurants (47), Cornwall is becoming friendlier for hounds by the year, so however you and your furriest of friends enjoy spending your time by the sea, you’re sure to be inspired by this, our Autumn and Winter Edition of Dogs Love Cornwall Living!

out of hours? When it comes to our pets, it’s worth thinking about what might happen in an out-of-hours emergency, at night or during the weekend. It therefore makes sense to find a surgery that covers out-of-hours care, so you can rely on it at any time of the day – or night. Another aspect to consider is whether the surgery provides 24-hour nursing care, so sick pets aren’t left alone. With that in mind, make sure to check with your vet and find out how your pet will be cared for in an emergency. Kernow Vets is one example of a vet team in Cornwall who provide the assurance of
round-the-clock care so, whether home or away, you know that they will be there for you and your pet. For more information call 01208 873727 or visit www.kernowvetgroup.com

We all love spending time with our dogs, those amazing walks surrounded by idyllic countryside or those fabulous sea views, like Crantock Beach below. Our National Parks are entrusted with 8972 square miles of amazing countryside making it impossible & ugly to have dog bins everywhere; yet leaving bags of poop is deadly to livestock & bad for the environment! The Dicky Bag is a convenient way to do the right thing, that’s why the National Parks have partnered with us. It’s a lightweight, odourproof, machine washable bin, made of Neoprene rubber. Easily attached to any dog lead, or “human” with the Karabiner, Velcro Strap or the Belt Loop.

WALKS AND WAGGY utumn is only just around the corner but that’s not to say the days of getting out and exploring Cornwall are over. In fact, we’d go as far as to say autumn is one of our favourite seasons for getting out there, particularly with our furry friends in tow, and where could be better to see the summer greens turn to auburn than on the gorgeous Isles of Scilly? This coming October, from Thursday 10th to Monday 14th, is this year’s second Walk Scilly – a five-day festival offering a choice of easy, moderate and hard walks, depending on how up for a challenge you and your pooch are feeling. Taking in the beaches, hills, paths and roads of Scilly, half-day walks are estimated at around three miles, while full-day outings cover around five or si . f you have a four-legged friend who could use a good tiring out, this island festival’s guided walks could well be for you – especially since 10 of the 15 walks are dog friendly! The recommended top three dog walks include a Walking Story on St Martin’s with novelist
Wyl Menmuir, the St Mary’s Energetic Coastal Hike, and the St Agnes Top to Toe. There are even a number of boat trips, on which your furry friend is more than welcome! For those walks that are human only, why not instead branch off with just the two of you and explore the isles at your own pace? Nothing could be more inspiring than unearthing the seemingly untouched reaches of such a wild part of the world. Led by the very best expert guides and local islanders, Walk Scilly truly brings the treasures and hidden gems of this archipelago to life. It provides visitors with the chance to see the land and seascapes in all their autumn glory, as well as the abundant wildlife the islands are home to, including migrating birds, bats, seabirds, even seals. Trust us, your dog is going to love it!

xploring the white sand beaches, crystal clear waters and scenic walks on the Isles of Scilly is only made better with your four-legged friend in tow. Watching them scamper around investigating new smells and splashing through the calm waters after sticks gives even more enjoyment to a coastal stroll, with the added benefit of being able to rest easy knowing your canine companion is comfortable and happy with you, not missing you at home. Karma St. Martin’s makes this all possible. The luxurious hotel prides itself on being dog friendly and has won bronze for ‘Best Dog-Friendly Business’ at the Cornwall Tourism Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018; the hotel team is aiming for at least silver this year! From the moment your furry friend arrives they’re welcomed with open arms – a treat, bowl, blanket and even a canine-friendly menu. The pet-loving Karma team also provides a dog sitting service, so you’re free to enjoy a spa treatment or make friends with the local seal colony on a snorkelling trip.
Enjoy a relaxing break with your four-legged friend at the beautiful Karma St. Martin’s. Unlike the main beaches on St Mary’s, the beaches on St Martin’s are dog friendly all year round and the hotel even provides complimentary towels for mucky pups to freshen up after a long day outdoors. Then for dinner head to the double AA Rosette restaurant for a delicious meal while your pooch has a snooze in your sumptuous room. If you’re dreaming of warm days, empty beaches and a bit of peace and quiet then make sure to visit Karma St. Martin’s either during October, when the days are still long and warm, and all the kids have gone back to school, leaving you free to explore Scilly’s ever-changing landscape with just the two of you. Or, in April, before the school holidays when spring is just beginning to unfurl and the Scilly’s beautiful owers are waking up in full force. Offering purpose built homes on Cornwall’s north coast that are comfortable, homely and stylish, all in one. The site location atop rolling green hills just minutes from Porthtowan beach is a massive draw, with a range of great spots nearby including the welcoming Portreath Arms pub. Thanks to its location, it’s within easy distance whether you’re on foot or two wheels. Owner Natalie tells us: “We love the Portreath Arms and have seen it transform in recent years to the pub it is now.” You also have two beautiful north coast beaches on your doorstep, Portreath and Porthtowan. The beach at Portreath is quite simply a ‘must visit’ for everyone. There is a seasonal dog ban on both beaches between Easter and October from 7am until 7pm, but outside of those dates it’s an absolute haven for hounds! And there’s always the option to stick to the striking coast paths. For a brilliant walk, head from Tehidy Woods to Deadman’s Cove, starting off in the beautiful
Tehidy Country Park, with woodland and wildlife aplenty then following the cliffs near Deadman’s Cove. From here you’ll follow the coast path to Basset’s Cove before re-entering Tehidy Country Park for a great circular route. When you stay at North Coast Holiday Cottages, you stay in style. Each cottage has been completed to the most exacting standards, offering the utmost in holiday luxury, and most even enjoy their own hot tubs! For many, escaping to Cornwall is more than just a holiday; it’s a chance to retreat from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, so a quiet location hidden in the Cornish countryside is near, if not at, the top of their list. Thankfully, North Coast Holiday Cottages is tucked away in its own tranquil pocket of north Cornwall. It’s perfect for that ‘away from it all’ experience and yet, being within access of the A30, is ideally placed to enjoy all the fantastic attractions that Cornwall has to offer. HOLIDAYING WITH
the hound
With just a little planning, the whole family, including the dog, can enjoy a cottage break in Cornwall. Toad Hall Cottages offer their top planning tips.
D
og owners will know that one of the toughest decisions when booking a holiday is what to do with your four-legged family member. If you don’t want your dog to pine for you (and vice versa!), why not bring them along? Walking, beach time, exploring and relaxing family bonding are just a few things you can enjoy on a dog-friendly cottage break in Cornwall so, with more than 70 dog-friendly cottages in beautiful locations throughout Cornwall, Toad Hall Cottages have put together a few things to remember when planning a holiday with dogs. Plan your car journey with plenty of time for toilet breaks! Not only does this allow everyone to stretch their legs and remain comfortable, it will help avoid any ‘accidents’. After all, dogs are unable to tell you they need to stop and use the bathroom! Take familiar bedding, toys and treats. This will help your dog settle quickly into new surroundings, and a happy, relaxed dog will be a great companion to share your holiday with. Cornwall is renowned for beautiful scenery, so it’s well worth doing your research on walks near your accommodation before you go. After a long journey, a walk can make everybody feel much better! Along a similar vein, it also pays to check out any dog restrictions on nearby beaches. There are many dog friendly days out, pubs and restaurants throughout Cornwall, including a number of beaches, but it’s worth checking first before you incur a fine.
Check your accommodation’s house rules ahead of your arrival. This will help you understand where your dog is allowed to go, and be aware of any new risks. If you’re on the beach all day, remember lots of water and some shade for your dog. Encourage them into the sea as well – a great way to cool off! Also be sure to take poo bags with you wherever you go, so everybody can enjoy Cornwall’s beautiful scenery without accidentally stepping in something! THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR DOG AT THE CORNISH SEAL SANCTUARY With 42 acres of land to enjoy, including woodlands, there are lots of things to excite your canine companions within the sanctuary.
A
t the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, dogs are always welcome! The sanctuary crew merely ask that all vaccinations are up to date; otherwise they have free reign with just two areas restricted because of hygiene reasons – The Seal Hospital and the cafe (however there is sheltered outdoor seating). In all other areas dogs are allowed, provided they are well behaved and on leads.
2
HAVE A WALK IN THE WOODS Tucked against the picturesque backdrop of the Helford river, the sanctuary is a designated Site of Special Scientific nterest and an rea of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 42-acre site has fantastic woodland walks for you and your four legged friends to explore!

MEET THE SEALS! The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a charity that rescues and rehabilitates grey seal pups from around the Cornish coastline. Each season, the sanctuary rehabilitates over 70 seal pups that have been rescued for various reasons, from malnourishment to being separated from their mum. The sanctuary also provides a permanent home to animals that need special care from the team of marine animal experts. As the enclosures are glass fronted, dogs are able to get up close and personal with the resident animals – doggy guests love meeting the seals!

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES Tucker out your furry friends with a long walk on one of Cornwall’s gorgeous dog-friendly beaches.
T
o choose just three of our favourite dog-friendly beaches is no easy task, so, in true tombola fashion, we’ve chosen three at random – each ideal for dogs and their owners to make the most of Cornwall by the sea this autumn and winter.
PICK IT UP Carrying poo bags whenever you head out with your hound is crucial, as not picking up after your dog can lead to a fine of up to £1,000. There are some fantastic accessories available to make it that little less unpleasant, available at shops such as Slickers Doghouse in Padstow. Turn to page 25 to read more!

PORTH Although there is a dog ban on this beach between 1st May and 30th September between 9am and 7pm, outside of these hours, and then from October until the end of April, dogs can roam free! Porth’s large area of at golden sand is prime for digging holes and chasing balls and, afterwards, there are a number dog-friendly restaurants nearby to satisfy that sea-air appetite.

LONG ROCK Located on the south coast between Penzance harbour wall and the Long Rock Level Crossing, Long Rock beach is dog friendly all year round, stretching in either direction with ample room for four-legged family members to wear themselves out before heading home and curling up in front of the fire. Marazion beach, east of the level crossing, has a seasonal ban between 1st May and 30th September (8am to 7pm), however during the autumn and winter months, it’s a great place for them to enjoy a run while humans soak up the views across the water of the iconic St Michael’s Mount.

PENDOWER For those exploring the wild, seemingly untouched reaches of the Roseland peninsula, Pendower is a must-visit. Between 1st May and 30th September dogs must be kept on leads, however as the cooler months roll around, they’re welcome to roll, sniff and bound to their heart’s content! ased in Redruth, family-owned business Action Petz, is run by Linda, husband Mark, their -year old son le and five-year old order Collie acey. oving to Cornwall in ovember 1 , they haven’t looked back since. inda tells us The planning started in pril 1 and we did have a few obstacles along the way but we didn’t give up. ur love of dogs and Cornwall inspired us to purchase an Action Petz franchise, the company that employed us in south Wales and we had our very first booking in ay this year The Action Petz ethos and philosophy is to always put the welfare, comfort and happiness of the dogs first. eing part of the ction Pet family means we have continuous access to some of the best dog behaviourists in the country. There are no set rules in terms of si es or breeds, meaning both puppies and senior dogs, as well as very small breeds or really big dogs can be accommodated. s long as the dogs are up to date with vaccinations, ea and worm treatment and pass the temperament assessment, ction Pet is happy to provide tailored, professional care for them.
The team is happy to look after less sociable dogs too, providing they pass the temperament assessment and a trial half day. n the rare occasion a dog isn’t suitable for the day care environment the team are always happy to help by referring you and your dog to a specialist in dog behaviour. ay-to-day canine residents have loads of off-lead fun the day is structured so that when the dogs arrive they play inside and outside in the secure outdoor play area, then towards lunchtime things slow down and the dogs are encouraged to get comfortable on one of the comfy sofas and dog beds. The team make sure each dog has lots of one-to-one attention and that everyone goes home tired and happy. Meet NUGGET The latest addition to the Dogs Love Cornwall Living canine team!
Th eT ere nce
Nugget is…
Nugget will…
A cuddly, energetic, six-month-old Jack Russell cross Dachshund. He’s a happy little pup with a big heart who loves a belly tickle. He lives with three cats who, as he’s slowly learning, don’t always share the same eagerness to play. He’s full of mischief and can often be found chewing something he shouldn’t, or digging big holes in the garden to hide his bones... and the car keys.
Nugget loves…
Nugget’s favourite walk… Anywhere there are exciting smells. As Nugget is still a pup, all his walks have been new and exciting. His most recent favourites have been the sand dunes at Gwithian and the Terence Coventry Sculpture Park in Coverack. He loves to explore every nook and cranny, having a good sniff and a dig along the way.
Cov entry Sculpture Park
Chew anything! No pot plant, shoe, chair or blanket is safe around Nugget. He also likes to chase feet and tug on trouser legs, but when he’s all tuckered out, you can find him sunbathing in the garden with his favourite cuddly toy, Wally the Walrus, which until recently was bigger than him!
To snuggle up and lick your face, whether or not he’s allowed! He’s never timid and greets every dog and human with the same excitement. It would appear, however, that his perception of his own size is slightly out as he often wears himself out playing with larger dogs. When he’s not out for a walk or playing, his favourite game is fetch; he will even throw the ball for himself when there’s no one else around!
