If you’re reading this now, you probably have at least two things in common with me and the rest of the team... you love dogs as much as you love Cornwall! Whether just visiting or, like us, proud to call Cornwall home, you couldn’t be in a better place for exploring the great outdoors with your four-legged friend. We’re fortunate to be blessed with wonderful dog-friendly beaches, gardens and attractions. In our guide, we’ve pulled together a handy selection of ideas to make your time in Cornwall with the pup as enjoyable as can be. The following pages are crammed with doggie essentials (page 31), places to stay, and doggy days out. Is your dog having behavioural problems? We review a book that might just have the solution (page 44) from Cornish celebrity dog expert, Nigel Reed. If you love Cornwall, you’ll really love Scilly and, as we highlight in our opening feature, it’s perfect for an idyllic doggie escape (page 9). There’s plenty more for you and your pup to discover in our guide. See you soon!

Cornwall has an abundance of stunning beaches and gardens, perfect for exploring with well-behaved pooches. Remember though that many beaches have a seasonal dog ban from April until October. So, as a small taster, we’ve chosen just five of our favourites spread across Cornwall that are dog-friendly all year round.

very now and then, we all dream of escaping to a tranquil desert island, a beautiful paradise where lush green foliage makes way to long stretches of beach laden with shimmering white sand and bright turquoise sea that gently laps against the shore. A place that demands a slower pace of life, where the morning commute is a gentle amble with your beloved pooch across the beach, or a short ferry hop from one island to another. While this may conjure up images of the Caribbean or Canary Islands, in fact this Utopia is only a couple of hours’ boat journey (or half an hour’s flight) from the coast of west Cornwall. If you’re looking for a short break that’s a world away from home, without the mammoth journey that’s typically associated with it, then a visit to the Isles of Scilly is a must.

Charlotte Bradb ury é St Martin’s

The uncrowded and unspoilt archipelago is made up of five inhabited islands (St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes) and about 140 small rocky islets. Each of the five main islands has its own thriving community of farmers and fishermen (and women), artists, gardeners and food producers. Throughout the year, various festivals celebrate Scillonian culture, its thriving food and drinks scene, picturesque walks and proud gig rowing heritage. With very few cars on the islands, miles of coastline to explore and many dog-friendly beaches, your four-legged friend will feel just as relaxed and reinvigorated as you. Whether taking a paddle to cool off, finding a spot of shade to doze, or heading up to the iconic daymark to admire the jawdropping views on the north east tip of St Martin’s, each day offers a new adventure and a fresh path for paws to tread.

As you explore the islands, you’ll stumble across wonderful independent galleries and open studios, most with a bowl of water outside for your dog, and honesty boxes to buy local goodies to remind you of your visit. And if you’re looking for country pubs with uninterrupted sea views, you’ve come to the right place. Enjoy a locally produced wine or ale brewed on the islands, and set up camp for ocean gazing with the pup. You can take your dog island hopping on the boats that regularly journey between the islands – and we seriously recommend it – you might just spot some of the array of unusual birds, seals and dolphins. Of course, with Scilly known for its outstanding natural beauty and rare wildlife, you’ll no doubt want to ensure it remains that way, so be aware that some uninhabited islands are seabird protected and at times dogs need to be kept on leads.

BEACHES As you may have gathered, you and your pup are literally spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches on the islands. We can personally vouch that they are as lovely as their quirky names suggest – on St Martin’s, for example, you might happen upon Bread and Cheese Cove, Great Bay or Little Bay. Along with Par Beach and Lawrence’s Bay, these little pockets of paradise dotted across Scilly really are amongst the finest beaches the UK has to offer. With the exception of just a few – Porthcressa beach, Old Town Bay and Porthmellon on St Mary’s operate a seasonal ban from May to September – the beaches on Scilly are generally open to dogs all year round. If you’re unsure, look out for signs and check www.visitislesofscilly.com.

WHERE TO STAY? Of course, after a busy day exploring and wearing out the legs, we all seek that perfect retreat to decamp to and relax. Thankfully, the isles abound with luxurious boutique hotels and B&Bs that welcome pups with open paws – we’ve stayed in a few ourselves! Karma St Martin’s is a particular favourite of ours (discover why on page 16). On St Mary’s, you’ll find Tregarthen’s Hotel, Atlantic Hotel, and the grand St Mary’s Hall, while the 16th century Star Castle Hotel offers garden rooms and suites that are dog friendly. Hell Bay on Bryher is another recommendation, again with some rooms opening out onto private patios for dogs to roam. Whatever your requirements or budget, there’s something for you, but it pays to plan ahead and book well in advance for trips in the core season.

CREATURE COMFORTS A question that inevitably precedes any holiday is what should I bring? While it’s good to come prepared, equally you don’t want to lug half the contents of your home with you! Fortunately the Isles of Scilly Veterinary Support Group is on hand with all the creature comforts your fourlegged friend could need. Run by Pam Manning to help raise funds for the group, it’s a simple but extremely effective idea. You can hire crates, dog beds, baskets, blankets, bowls and other paraphernalia for transportation, ensuring that no eventuality is forgotten. Just make a donation which goes towards upgrading and maintaining equipment and facilities in the surgery – everybody wins! For more information, visit www.vetsupportgroup.co.uk/creature_comforts.html

So if you love miles of sandy beaches to explore with your companion, stunning scenery at every turn, and some of the finest produce of the south west, then simply take our advice: sit down, grab a cup of tea, and start planning your island adventure.

GETTING THERE Taking the ferry across with your dog becomes a part of the holiday and there are often dolphins, sunfish, occasional whales and wonderful sea birds to be seen. The plane is an excellent choice and gives you fantastic views over Land’s End before catching your first glimpse of the islands and the wonderful colours of the seas around them. Your dog can fly in a special pet crate. For more information www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk

Having won bronze last year as a dogfriendly business in Cornwall and the south west, Karma St Martin’s is on track for yet another successful year.

H

aving been open for three years on St Martin’s in the beautiful Isles of Scilly, the dog-friendly side of this 30-bedroom luxury boutique hotel has become a key part of its allure for would-be visitors, with roughly 45% of guests bringing their dogs over the last 12 months! Taking the dog with you on holiday shouldn’t mean being cooped up in a caravan park or a bare-boned bed and breakfast, which is why the Karma team offers a warm welcome to all clients, human and canine alike, with a VIP (Very Important

Pet) check-in experience that includes a welcome treat, bowls, blankets, a dogfriendly restaurant and even a ‘Pawsecco Bar’! The hotel’s beautiful natural setting and tranquil surroundings promise to leave both you and your dog feeling relaxed and refreshed. It’s situated on the beachfront, with miles of stunning white sandy beaches just waiting to be explored and the best part is – unlike the other islands in Scilly – St Martin’s beaches are dog-friendly all year round and not restricted to leash rules, meaning you can soak up the fresh sea air while your dog enjoys sniffing, bounding and rolling its way around the sensory surroundings. The unpolluted waters are ideal for a spot of doggie-paddling too, and the hotel even provides complimentary towels, so your mucky pup can get cleaned up after a day spent exploring the outdoors. For those days when you fancy heading out for a romantic afternoon but don’t want to leave your dog alone, the team is always happy to dogsit. Free of charge, with plenty of cuddles on hand and friends to be made in the ‘run around’ area, you can rest assured that they won’t be left pining for your return. This is testament to the animal-loving Karma crew, who’re also able to guide and advise you on the best transport options when travelling with your pet – a weight off of your mind if you’re concerned how your waggly-tailed friend will handle the trip. So, fingers crossed for the Karma St Martin’s team – building on its two bronze awards last year, we’re confident this fantastic Scilly hotel will once get the recognition it deserves for its doggie credentials. If you’d like to learn more about how you and your canine companion can make the most of a luxury break in Scilly, the website has a dedicated page for dogs with everything you need to know, so take a look! Play, eat and drink with your furry friend at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove.

S

ituated in a rugged and unspoilt natural bay, just two miles from Land’s End, you’ll find Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove. ‘Play Eat Drink’ is the spirit behind this restaurant’s character, so bring your four-legged friend to enjoy the SurfDen beachlife, eat a variety of culinary delights and savour a refreshing drink to perfectly complement the food and the surroundings.

PLAY Sennen Cove, a small coastal hamlet, is a perfect location to explore. With a long, sandy beach and small harbour, it combines a working fishing port with a laid-back beach lifestyle – perfect for running, walking, or hiking on the coast path, or dog walks along the beach. If you fancy the Blue Flag quality beach there are top surfing conditions and safe bathing within flagged areas. EAT Head to the SurfDen for freshly baked pizza cooked to perfection. Or enjoy a beachside spot on the terrace with a traditional seaside supper – fish and chips anyone? If you and your furry friend fancy some time inside, the restaurant offers a selection of sumptuous dishes, where Ben’s philosophy is to select the finest locally-sourced seafood around. DRINK Coffee on the go or on the terrace looking out at the surrounding scenery with your dog by your side? It’s up to you! OF THE BEST DOG-FRIENDLY THINGS TO DO NEAR PORTHLEVEN

P

orthleven Holiday Cottages offers a handpicked selection of holiday homes in and around Porthleven on the south west coast of Cornwall. The local staff have a wealth of knowledge about the village and surrounding area, always on hand to discuss your needs, suggest the perfect property for your stay and things to do on your holiday. With their help, we’ve compiled five of the best things to do with your dog in Porthleven.

1

TAKE A WALK Your dog will love the South West Coast Path, which runs past Porthleven and towards Penrose Estate, where the path runs inland. There are breathtaking views for walkers, and dogs will enjoy the variety of ground, new smells and perhaps even meet a few sheep along the way. Beware of steep cliffs!

2

COSY UP ON A STORMY NIGHT The Ship Inn is the perfect place to cosy up in front of the fire and watch a storm raging in the outer harbour and out to sea. This dog-friendly pub offers a fabulous atmosphere, delicious food and local beer.

3

FEEL THE WIND THROUGH YOUR HAIR Take to the beach on a calm or windy day. “Our favourite dog-friendly beach walk is from Porthleven towards Loe Bar at low tide. There are other beaches nearby that your dog will love too, like Praa Sands and Marazion towards Penzance.”

4

EXPLORE A BEAUTIFUL LOCAL GARDEN Trebah Garden, near Falmouth, and Trengwaiton Gardens, near Penzance, are both close by and dog friendly. “We love the open spaces any time of year. Trebah has designated doggie tables in the café, while Trengwainton has The Terrace with its huge open garden overlooking St Michael’s Mount – perfect for a picnic with your pooch.”

5

RELAX BY THE WOODBURNER Following your day’s explorations, kick back in your luxury holiday cottage by the warmth of the fire, pooch by your side, preparing to do it all again the next day! A DOG-FRIENDLY AREA Locals and visitors alike love their dogs here and as a result the area caters really well for four-legged friends. You’ll be spoilt for choice for dog-friendly accommodation from modern coastal retreats to cosy fisherman’s cottages. BEAUTIFUL BEACHES Choose from a large selection of dog-friendly beaches including Rock, Porthilly and Daymer Bay. Whether your pooch enjoys a swim in the sea, a run on the sand or exploring the dunes, there’s something for big and small, young and old, sociable and solitary. MILES OF SCENIC COASTAL PATHS Stretch your dog’s legs on the South West Coast Path. Explore miles of scenic coastal paths taking in Rock, Daymer Bay, Polzeath, The Rumps, Port Quin all the way to Port Isaac. You certainly won’t be short of places to walk your dog in north Cornwall.

EATERIES Many of the cafés, restaurants and pubs in the area are really happy to welcome dogs through the door. Sample the delicious local produce with breathtaking views of the water. TJ’s surf café in Polzeath even caters for dogs on the menu with its dog sausage. FERRY TO PADSTOW If you want to test your dog’s sea legs, take them on the ferry from Rock to Padstow (dogs are charged just £1 at the Ferryman’s discretion). Explore Padstow Harbour before following the coast path, which leads to a choice of beautiful beaches, including Harbour Cove.

Introducing Creusa, a kennel so good we are contemplating going ourselves!

C

ornwall is proud to be a very dog-friendly county, with a fantastic number of dogfriendly beaches for splashing around, incredible countryside for walkies and an impressive array of cafés and pubs that welcome dogs and their well-behaved owners. Of course, sometimes we do need to make alternative arrangements. A kennel owner based in the heart of Cornwall has created luxury retreats to provide your dog with the ultimate holiday experience. The retreats include TVs and comfortable handcrafted wooden beds just for the pooch! What’s more, your treasured pup could be feasting on gourmet meals, available upon request, including salmon with creamed vegetables and basil on a bed of rice! Owner, William Bruce, says: “As a pet owner I am aware how stressful it can be when families have no choice but to use kennels. Our aim at Creusa is to minimise that stress by ensuring animals feel at home. My dogs love wildlife channels so we show Attenborough films in the suites.” For those holidaymakers who are not allowed to bring dogs in their accommodation, the kennels are perfect for a doggie bed and breakfast. You can come and collect them in the morning and then return them after a day of exploring Cornwall. William tells us they are even happy to bathe muddy and sandy dogs – ideal! Doggie day-care is also available, perfect for locals going to work or holidaymakers visiting attractions that aren’t suitable for dogs. With state-of-the-art security for added peace of mind, Creusa sounds like the perfect solution for any canine needs. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.CREUSAKENNELS.CO.UK OR CALL 01208 831291

Take your four-legged friend to meet other beasts at the Museum of Witchcraft & Magic in Boscastle.

P

eople often say a visit to Cornwall is magical, but for a truly enchanting experience, we recommend you head over to Boscastle. Not only are there some stunning scenic walks to enjoy with your pooch, it’s also home to the Museum of Witchcraft & Magic, located by the harbourside. This endlessly fascinating treasure trove of memorabilia and curios – one of the largest and oldest of its kind – is one of Cornwall’s genuine wonders and somewhere to fully immerse yourself in the atmospheric experience and exhibitions. What’s more, dogs and their well-behaved owners are very welcome – just beware of the otherworldly beasts living within the museum’s walls! From 1st April until 31st October, the museum is open every day, Monday to Saturday, 10.30am to 6pm (last entry 5pm), and Sunday from 11.30am to 6pm (last entry 5pm). As well as the permanent displays, throughout the season the museum hosts visiting exhibitions, guest lectures, late-night candlelit openings, and guided tours (by prior appointment). To find out more about the next event, take a look at the museum’s website.

So if you’re looking for an experience that you won’t forget in a long time, make your destination during the season Boscastle’s Museum of Witchcraft & Magic. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT WWW.MUSEUMOFWITCHCRAFTANDMAGIC.CO.UK OR CALL 01840 250111

W

e’ve all experienced it; those troubling times when our beloved pooch just won’t play ball. Sometimes this erratic behaviour can be embarrassing in public, perhaps even dangerous in some scenarios. You’ve tried the usual tricks with only short-lived success. Surely there’s a long-term solution? Enter dog behaviourist Nigel Reed, who brings 15 years’ experience working with dogs and their owners in a compelling book, The Dog Guardian: Your Guide to a Happy Well-Behaved Dog. In Nigel’s words, “The Dog Guardian is a must for any dogs owners who want to understand, communicate and care for their dog on a deeper level… The book will empower you to address any behavioural issues to become the guardian of a happy, well-behaved dog.” Nigel has developed a methodology split into four distinct areas, in turn covering your dog’s needs, language and state, and your leadership style. His book is crammed with expert, step-by-step advice on everything from issues with food and obsessive behaviours to interactions with children and other dogs. You’ll find lots of ‘added tips’ throughout as well as case studies that put the themes into context. But don’t just take our word for it. Nigel’s success has drawn the attention of several celebrities, including Evan Davis, and TV mind control expert Derren Brown, who notes: “Nigel is a real magician. He transformed our wayward and difficult dog into a delightful companion.” The book is available from Amazon, either in paperback or ebook format for your tablet. What’s more, the guide includes access to exclusive videos demonstrating Nigel’s approach in action. Nigel’s business also provides one-to-to consultation and runs online and group courses for you and your dog. We catch up with Nigel who, having grown up in Cornwall, explains what makes it the perfect

Trewince Holiday Lodges Just how you imagined Cornwall to be. Dog Friendly For most owners the thought of leaving their dog at home just isn’t an option as they are part of the family. Not only is it more enjoyable, but also practical to take your dog away on holiday with you. At Trewince we understand this, so with many of our lodges welcoming pets it would be a real pity to leave them behind. There is no need to pay for kennels, or to ask friends or relatives to take care of them.

Stunning walks & beaches

A DOGGIE

The team at Retallack Resort & Spa understands that a family holiday should include the furry members too.

R

etallack Resort & Spa really is a holiday destination for the whole family. In fact, even if you’re a local, it has all you could possibly ask for, whether you want to throw yourselves head first into the Aqua Park, enjoy a leisurely spot of coarse fishing or be pampered in the ESYA Spa. The best part is that it’s dog friendly too, meaning that instead of popping your pooch in kennels, you can bring them with you and relax in your own dog-friendly lodge. The park is privy to 100 acres of peaceful countryside, with plenty of lakeside and woodland walks for them to sniff their way around. What’s more, nearby beaches offer all the space they could possibly need to let off steam (that goes for the kids, too!). After a day spent running and rolling their way along the local stretches of golden sand, you can let your sleeping dog lie while you head to The Lookout Restaurant & Lounge – Retallack’s onsite restaurant. Here, whether it’s a long, lazy lunch in the lounge overlooking the resort’s luxurious leisure facilities, or a family feast in the Restaurant with fantastic views of the FlowRider (a great spectator’s sport), you’re well catered for. The menu promises

to bring only the finest ingredients to your table, with options ranging from stonebaked pizzas and cocktails, to traditional Sunday lunches, to afternoon tea with an obligatory glass of fizz. What’s more Retallack also offers a dog-sitting service, if you wish to go out for the day or enjoy an evening out. So, if you’re looking for a way for your family to make the most of its Cornish holiday without having to guiltily leave your beloved furry friend behind, why not book yourselves a break at Retallack Resort & Spa?
