The soothing sound of carols and sweet smell of warming spices are filling the air – it must be Christmas! As usual, there’s a whole host of interesting happenings going on across Cornwall this year and we’ve got the inside scoop on it all, just for you. Of course, Santa will be doing the rounds, temporarily parking his sleigh, to pop up on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway and sample the Fowey Christmas Market. You might also spot a few more Santas in a town near you, taking part in Cornwall Hospice Care’s Santa Series Fun Runs. Now, we all know it’s not Christmas without panto, so thankfully we can look forward to Miracle Theatre’s fantastical production of Cinderella, as well as a wonderful Cornish retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk at Hall For Cornwall. Christmas is the ultimate season for fun family activities, rolling up our sleeves and spending quality time together, whether baking tasty treats to savour over the season or creating personalised Christmas decorations. So, our favourite chef, Lizzie of Little Kitchen Magicians, helps us to create a delicious tear and share Christmas tree bread. And we have a go at making wonderful salt dough decorations for the tree, with help from our friends at Class Art. Finally, we take a look at some top books to sink your teeth into with Bookworms, perhaps providing a few stocking filler ideas. From all of us in the team, we hope you have a very merry Christmas!

No more wear and tear thanks to Shufflebum Shufflebum came into existence after creator Tara’s son started to use bum shuffling as his primary mode of transportation. His particular style of movement often resulted in one leg being dragged in his daily adventures. This naturally ends in a constant stream of ruined clothes and the endless task of replacing them. Trousers took the brunt of the wear and tear, particularly on his outdoor expeditions, and Tara got understandably fed up of wrapping him up like it was winter all year round purely for protection purposes. After scouring parent support groups and toddler blogs she began to fear that there was nothing around that was hardwearing, comfortable and protective for delicate skin. “So I got my thinking cap on. If I couldn’t buy it, I’d have to make it.” And before you ask, she didn’t just add patches to the knees! Having previously worked in the motorcycle industry, Tara drew upon her knowledge of the fabric technology used in protective clothing. She created a range of clothing that lets children be children, learning to negotiate their surroundings comfortably in their own unique ways. And of course it keeps parents happy by offering functional, longlasting, easy-care clothes that look great.

Jack and the Beanstalk at Hall For Cornwall From the creative team that brought you last year’s hit Christmas show, Dick Whittington and his Mousehole Cat, comes a brand new adventure, Jack and the Beanstalk. Somewhere deep in the heart of Kernow, Kenwyne and Aunty Flo are trying to take a holiday, but they get much more than they bargained for. Cousin Jack and his Mum are bickering, their farm’s failing, the rent is through the roof and the village is being terrorised by the legendary giant Cormoran. Starring Cornwall’s very own Kernow King, and the much loved Granville Saxton, the Hall For Cornwall team are proud to present this homegrown Christmas adventure for the whole family. The show runs from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 31st December.

Santas and elves are coming to town... are you?
Don’t get your knickers in a twist; Pants Café has got you covered!
Cornwall Hospice Care is hosting its annual Santa Series where you can run, walk, cycle or even surf your way to raising money for this brilliant charity. This year the Cornish charity is holding events in Bodmin, Wadebridge, Padstow, Newquay, Truro, Falmouth, Helston and Marazion. Sign up online and you’ll receive a festive Santa suit! If you are out in Falmouth or Padstow, you can choose a rather merry elf costume!
Since discovering she had womb cancer in 2007, Jeannette Preston has worked tirelessly to increase awareness and support for all pants area cancers. She has opened several charity shops and a café, offering fresh, quality food, including Sunday roasts, expertly prepared by chef Adrian, who is also a therapist with a great interest in healthy living – the perfect addition to this organisation.
Santas and elves alike can run, jog or walk the routes and at the end you will be rewarded with a Christmas medal and a delicious mince pie. So, come and join us in getting in the festive spirit of giving by signing up to what promises to be an unforgettable way to raise money!
For more information head over to www.pantscancers.org.uk or call the café on 01326 374438
The café can be found in Waterside in Falmouth and funds the CancerRehab programme, which is free to those coping with pants area cancers. The café offers live music each Saturday night and stages many events in order to raise money and support for cancer survivors as well as to connect with younger people who are vulnerable to pants area cancers and who often have no idea. These shops and café are a true testament to what hard work and dedication can achieve and we highly recommend popping round to show your support.
All dates between 26th November and 17th December – £12 for adults and £7 for children, or £15 and £10 for the Wadebridge and Padstow Santa Run.

More riveting reads from the bookshelf
We’ve rounded up the perfect collection of books to sink your teeth into this Christmas.
THE STAR TREE
Catherine Hyde
This is the newest book by Cornish artist Catherine Hyde, and is the first book to be written and illustrated by her. Sure to make the perfect Christmas present, the beautiful artwork perfectly complements the delicate wording of the story. During this journey you will meet some amazing characters, all of which will ignite a sense of fantasy and imagination with the skilfully painted scenes. It might be a lullaby intended for children but we can see adults being soothed into a peaceful slumber with this gentle and well-crafted tale.
THE MOUSEHOLE CAT
Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley Another classic to enjoy throughout the winter months, and any other time of year, is The Mousehole Cat. This truly iconic story speaks to the Cornish soul as the sea is captured perfectly in both the artwork and the story. Whether you are reading this again or sharing it for the first time with a loved one, this book is the apex of Cornish storytelling. So, why not wait for a particularly stormy night and experience this book as Tom Bawcock would have, amidst Cornish wind and rain.
HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS
Dr Seuss
Christmas is a time for tradition so it’s nice to revisit our favourite festive books, and what better book to start with than this despicably wicked tale of How the Grinch stole Christmas! Dr Seuss brings life and laughter into all of his tales with expertly crafted imagery and rhymes, but none so iconic as the Grinch and the tale of his wonderfully awful idea. So don’t be a Grinch this season, give this time-old classic a read and let Dr Seuss remind you how fun it can be in Whoville at Christmas!
PIGS MIGHT SURF
Olly Miles and Anna Louise Pigs might not be able to fly, but in this classic children’s book, they might surf! This curly tale offers a truly inspiring read as it encourages children to follow their dreams, while utilising a fun-filled, and often hilarious, story. This book will surely entice children into trying the fantastically Cornish sport of surfing, because if Bailie the pig can do it, anyone can! So, whether you know someone who loves to surf, or who love pigs, this book is the perfect gift this holiday season!
