PROUD TO BE PART OF

Welcome

From the Editor to the March edition of Cornwall Living!

Member of:

As the days begin to draw out and there is a little warmth returning to the sun, our thoughts have been turning to holidays. Cornwall is a wonderful place to escape, and even if you are already lucky enough to be living here, there are hidden corners still waiting to be explored. The landscape of the Duchy, both coast and countryside, is exquisite and best enjoyed when fully immersed in it. The best way to do this when on holiday is to stay in one of the glorious camping and glamping sites or luxury lodges that you'll find hidden in unique locations across the county. Many are sited away from busy tourist hotspots, allowing for a true away-from-it-all escape. Dan Warden has been searching out some of these special places from page 21. From coastal yurts and rural shepherd's huts to hidden cabins and contemporary cliff-top lodges, you'll find something to suit every taste.

This month we are also delighted to bring you our ultimate guide to weddings in Cornwall from page 57. I might be a little biassed, but I think there's no better place to tie the knot than here in Cornwall. The range of venues, all with amazing views and incredible photo opportunities is breathtaking – you'll be spoiled for choice. Add to that top local tipples to toast the occasion, wedding breakfasts that showcase Cornwall's incredible produce and places to stay that will surpass expectations and you have the perfect combination to make sure your special day is one to be remembered forever.

If you're looking for a special piece of jewellery for your loved one then from page 77 we showcase the talent of a range of Cornish and British designers. Similarly, if your guests are looking to mark your marriage with a Cornish gift, then there's plenty of creative inspiration from page 79

...happy reading!

Success at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary!

Step through the doors of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary this winter, and you’ll see the animal care team in full swing amid another busy grey seal pup season. At this time of year, 50-70 young pups pass through their doors, with 98% of them making it back out to the wild via their rescue, rehabilitation and release programme.

One of this year’s success stories includes a special pup called Wasabi; a youngster who came to the Sanctuary at just 17kg and suffering from a very infected rear flipper (as well as other flipper wounds and a loose nail). However, Wasabi couldn’t have come to a better place.

The team jumped into action, providing around-the-clock care to treat his wounds, supported with a course of antibiotics. But

when the antibiotics didn’t work, Wasabi had to go into surgery and have his rear flipper amputated. After weeks of recovery to ensure he could cope with his new disability, he made incredible progress and the team were able to release him successfully back into the wild! He’s now back to where he belongs, while his space at the Sanctuary is taken by another pup in need.

It’s only thanks to their visitors and supporters that they can help pups like Wasabi – and now is the perfect time to see them in action. Find them in Gweek, near Helston, for a day out that makes a difference.

Diving into health and wellness

Escape Swims are delighted to be joining forces with Budock Vean Hotel to introduce both new and seasoned swimmers to the pristine open waters of Cornwall’s Helford River. Two curated swim retreats will share the sheer surge of mental and physical wellbeing over three days of swimming and breathing activities based from the award-winning hotel.

In May, the focus will be on cold water dipping and wellness, and in October the sessions are for more experienced open-water swimmers, with some more adventurous swims planned. “We’re spoilt for choice in Cornwall for natural swimming spots, but the Helford stretching towards Falmouth Bay is so beautifully diverse and unspoilt as well as sheltered and safe – it’s hard to beat,” says Jem Wallis, Owner of Escape Swims.

Out with the old…

Spring is the perfect time to retire and recycle those worn-out wardrobe favourites and invest in some gorgeous new styling. This spring and summer at WHITEGOOSE, located at 1 Foundry Street, Wadebridge (PL27 7NW), the team are already ahead of this year’s trends. While fuchsia was undoubtedly the colour of 2022, it’s stepping aside this year for cobalt blue, which is already stocked and has been for some time! Neutrals are also set to be popular, being easy to wear, timelessly elegant and never seeming to go out of fashion. Then there’s ombre, an extremely flattering colourway that sees reds run into orange, yellow and pale primrose.

As well as stocking garments in all of the above, WHITEGOOSE has an absolutely fabulous collection of dress and coat ensembles from Alquema, all of which are amazing.

Making the most of your open spaces

With the emergence of sites like Airbnb, many people with a ‘dormant’ piece of land have the potential to add an extra bit of income by turning it into a small camping field. Whether it’s via the placement of a glamping lodge built from solid logs with shower room or bedroom, a glamping pod or a shepherd’s hut, then Timber Leisure Buildings (TLB) can get you started.

If you’re worried about regulations then you can join the independent Freedom Camping Club – an organisation who will give you sound advice on how to go about setting up your

site. If the worry of the initial set-up costs is holding you back then TLB can also introduce customers to a specialist finance broker who are experts in sourcing low interest loans to the farming and tourist industry.

And what’s more, they have constructed timber lodges in the South West for over a decade and visits to their existing customers can be arranged.

For more information call 07766 769774 or email info@timberleisure.com

In short, if you’re thinking about your spring attire, be sure to pay the team a visit. You will not be disappointed! For more information call 01208 815157 or visit White Goose & Co

Beer’s not just for boys

We’ve been drinking beer for almost 7,00 years and the original brewers were women. The Brontë sisters all knew how to brew and Queen Elizabeth I had two breweries in her palaces. While it may have become a more male-dominated field in modern times, ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8th 2023, Cornwall’s St Austell Brewery is celebrating its Brewing Director, Georgina Young, who also oversees operations at the company’s sister brewery, Bath Ales.

After graduating from Heriot Watt University, with an MSc in Brewing and Distilling, Georgina started her brewing career at Smiles Brewery in Bristol. She went on to run the pilot brewery at Camden BRI before joining Fuller’s as a Production Brewer in 1999, where she served in roles across all aspects of production. She ascended to the role of Fuller’s Head Brewer in 2017 – the first female to take on the role at the company at both Fuller’s and St Austell – and is a Master Brewer of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Leaving her Head Brewer role at Fuller’s to return to the West Country where she was brought up, Georgina first joined St Austell Brewery in May 2019, recruited by her long-time friend, Roger Ryman, who served as St Austell’s Brewing Director for two decades.

Famous for its flagship pale ale, Tribute, St Austell Brewery’s range of award-winning beers – also including Proper Job IPA and korev lager – are available in pubs and supermarkets nationwide.

Making the decision to become a dog owner is no easy task, but once that decision is made, it’s one you make for life, and a great one at that! Along with the long walks, hours of play and companionship, grooming also comes into play, and Slickers Doghouse is there to help make things a little easier.

While it may be less noticeable, short-haired dogs shed just as much as those with longer fur, and the Pet Teezer Puppy Brush is great thanks to the bristle-like teeth of the brush itself. This is a great intro to grooming, feeling more like a massage with those soft bristles. It will also help spread natural oils across the coat, giving it a nice shine. Grooming your dog at home when it has long hair can be a little trickier, but no less fun!

As long-haired dogs often need grooming more frequently, it is a good idea to get your routine solidified when they are a puppy, and the Fine/Course Anti-Static Comb is ideal to

get out any stubborn tangles. If your pooch is prone to matting on the legs and behind the ears, the Groom Professional Matt breaker makes light work of these.

Wire hair dogs need just as much attention, if not more, due to the need to remove dead hairs in a process called hand stripping, and a Professional Stripping Knife is just the thing, where curly-haired pooches would do much better with the Professional Grooming Slicker Brush.

With all these products and many more available online, Slickers have your back when it comes to keeping your pup’s fur healthy and beautiful!

The Helford River exhibition draws to a close

Spring designs arrive at WOW!

For Helford River, Jackson turns his eye to a stretch of water running west to east, entering the sea into Falmouth Bay. The Helford’s shoreline is vast, taking in a wide range of habitats; its exposed rocky estuary stands in stark contrast to the sheltered muddy creeks found further inland. This flooded river valley is fed by seven streams including Frenchman’s Creek, immortalised by Daphne DuMaurier’s enduringly popular novel of the same name. Throughout this exhibition, Jackson dives into the Helford’s creeks and tributaries to reveal stunning beauty and incredible biodiversity.

Kurt Jackson’s Helford River collection runs alongside photographer Ander Gunn’s Seven Decades exhibition, drawing to a close on February 25th at the multiaward-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just.

WOW Cornwall in Wadebridge is home to a stunning array of furniture and home interiors, carefully selected for style and sustainability. This time of year is always an exciting time for buyers as the annual Spring Fair showcases designers and manufacturers.

WOW Cornwall is super-excited with the new products and ranges for 2023 after their visit to this year’s fair: “We have so many fantastic new furniture designs and interior accessories arriving we need a shop five times the size! Fortunately we’ll soon be offering online shopping and our lovely customers will be able to view and order a wider range.”

The new wares will be gracing the store’s shelves in the next four weeks. Ten years of riding the wave

Waves Gallery, Porthleven, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year! After opening in Easter 2013 the gallery has adapted, grown and thrived – through the tough times of Covid through to successfully surfing the current unsteady economic climate.

One year into the endeavour, Mike Lacey – the gallery’s founder – managed to capture the most iconic photo that has become the hallmark of his talent. ‘The Cornish Heart’, a one in a million shot, was not only Mike’s last photo of

the day, but was also his last photo taken in the sea before his eldest daughter was born. As Mike says, “There is something really special about The Cornish Heart photo I took the day before my daughter, Coral, was born. It has become quite the most dramatic image in the gallery,” leading to the creation, with his wife Lisa, of the children’s story book – Coral & the Cornish Heart For more information call 07767437088 or email mike@mikelaceyphotography.co.uk

outdoors in. “Rechargeable lighting designs have leapt forward in the UK so look out for beautiful designs which can move seamlessly from home to garden. We love the new filament lamps with designs takings us through the seasons; such an easy way to update your look.”

Adding interior texture will see plain velvets, woven and silk cushions and throws arrive in every colour. “Home design is moving away from grey, natural and minimal tones. Interiors are becoming more about colour and texture, adding artistic personality for a cosy, comfortable home.”

Look out for beautiful hobnail glasses and jugs in every colour, modern cuckoo clocks, serveware with nature-inspired enamelled surfaces, plus oak and hand-painted dining ranges with woven rush seating and benches. DID YOU KNOW?

Interested in holiday home ownership? Cornwall has a number of superb and award-winning resorts to choose from, each offering something different to those in search of the perfect investment opportunity. Here are some of our favourites:

Trevella Holiday Park (page 52)

Hengar Manor (page 44)

Tregoad (watersideholidaygroup. co.uk)

With the days drawing out and the sun beginning to shine through our windows earlier each morning, it seems that spring is almost upon us. It’s a season of promise, awakening and new life, enlivening us and rekindling our adventurous spirit. It’s a time for getting outdoors once again, and for those seeking to escape the dreary humdrum of their daily lives away from the Duchy, to break the ice of hibernation and crash into coastal Cornwall for a long-awaited holiday. Beautiful at all times of the year, Cornwall is especially stunning as nature dips her brush into the paint pot and begins layering her canvas with the colourful palette of spring, which makes it a popular time for those who relish time spent outdoors.

With this in mind, we thought we’d explore some of the many options out there for holiday makers hoping to make the most of Cornwall in the season of new life, from luxury, surroundedby-nature lodges and options for those hoping to invest in their future family holidays, to camping and glamping escapes that place but a layer of canvas between you and the enigmatic beauty of Cornwall.

We’ll begin with the latter, and where better to start than the Yurt Village at The Park, Cornwall (theparkcornwall.com)? In actual fact, accommodation at The Park ranges widely, from luxury lodges and cottages, to park cabins. But it’s really the resort’s Yurt Village that has stolen our attention this month. For more than 2,000 years, Mongolian shepherds have made yurts their homes. Traditionally made from a round wooden frame with stretched-canvas rooves, each yurt at The Park comes with a touch more luxury than the traditional shelters that inspired them, with underfloor heating, doubleglazed windows and woodburners making them cosy all year round, even on those chillier

spring evenings. Within easy reach of Mawgan Porth beach – and of course, benefitting from all the facilities The Park Cornwall has to offer – if it’s a glamping retreat you’re looking for, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. Read more about The Park Cornwall on page 63

Another favourite of ours that offers an array of accommodation is Pentewan Sands (pentewan. co.uk). Nestling on a half-mile stretch of privately owned beach in the sheltered waters of Mevagissey Bay, it’s the ideal location for families embarking on the traditional Cornish bucket-and-spade escape. It also welcomes guests wishing to stay in all kinds of ways, be it in their own motor home, caravan or tent, or in one of the resort’s on-site holiday homes. Bedecked with everything you need for the perfect holiday, from fully equipped kitchens, to bedrooms with all of the bed linen supplied, these lodges provide the ultimate comfort for a break on the fringes of the coast, with many offering views over the Atlantic breakers. With the on-site Seahorse Restaurant offering inhouse dining and takeaway meals, as well as tennis courts, indoor swimming pools, bicycle hire and even an amusement arcade, there’s lots to keep families busy at Pentewan.

Facilities also abound at Wooda (wooda. co.uk), a five-star holiday park near Bude. Placing families in prime position to make the most of woodland walks, nature trails and cycle paths, as well as tractor rides and the chance to meet the farm’s animals, Wooda continues to be made home from home by families who have been visiting for generations. The site also boasts a tennis court, a fitness suite, indoor archery, a pitch and putt, badminton, a fishing pond, pottery workshops and much more, but what really sets it apart is the attention to comfort and luxury that defines its accommodation. Wooda, like Pentewan, offers both touring and camping pitches for those bringing their own shelters with them, however it also has a variety of luxury holiday homes sleeping up to six, all with sea views, as well as three self-catering holiday cottages (two on site, with one in the heart of Bude). On top of this is the newest addition – a nine-strong collection of self-catering lodges named Gwelva

Hills. Tucked into the hillside with sweeping coastal views across Bude on Cornwall’s north coast, Gwelva Hills offers the perfect destination for a romantic break for two, as much as it does for family holidays and get-togethers with friends. Stylishly designed with soft hues, the interiors of these spacious lodges feature openplan living spaces, log burners and sink-into sofas to make time spent together as relaxing as possible. Barbeques and bottles of bubbles are all but obligatory thanks to the outside decking areas, while the bedrooms provide sumptuous sanctuaries in which to rest up before the next day’s adventure.

For those in search of something a little more secluded, or for a real point of difference compared to the wider market of available stays, Unique hideaways (uniquehideaways. com), for want of a better phrase, offers exactly what it says on the tin. Mistery 2 is a fine example, a houseboat hidden along the banks of the river Kennall, just over four miles from Falmouth. Sleeping four, this beautiful barge is permanently docked at her own quay, which itself is on the water’s edge of a two-acre holiday sanctuary. You’ll find tucked-away spots in which to read a book, easy access to the river for paddleboarding, and a firepit around which to gather and enjoy a hot chocolate as you gaze up and pick out the stars of the night sky. Inside, the interiors are as luxurious as they are nautical, with port windows allowing the sunshine to stream in, a well-equipped kitchen with surfaces carefully crafted from recycled Falmouth dock pilings, and the outside teak decking having been transferred from older ships.

Another of Unique hideaways’ show-stoppers is The Bird Box, described on the website as a ‘cabin in Cornwall with an outdoor bath’. Inviting you to reawaken your connection with nature, this Scandi-chic, rustic cabin in a secluded pocket of countryside near Liskeard is a true example of glamping. It allows daydreamers to do just that, with a sumptuous freestanding tub inviting al fresco, bubbleheavy soaks, and a hammock suspended idly in a small spinney of trees. Add to this a back-tobasics, warmed-by-wood-fire interior that has

everything you need to relax, and all that’s left to do is enjoy the company of just the two of you.

Perhaps what epitomises the modern ‘glamping’ retreat the most, however, is the humble shepherd’s hut. Anybody who has stayed in one of these will know how amazing it is what creative minds can do with such a small space, and Unique hideaways’ retreat, Shepherd’s Rest, is no exception. Located less than four miles north of Fowey, this romantic, beautifully crafted hideaway lies in the heart of the countryside, with a lakeside barbeque hut for intimate sunset feasts. Craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every wooden joint, from the reclaimed floorboards, to the handmade cabinetry and bed frame, to the window frames that provide calming views out over the decking, the lakes, and the Cornish countryside beyond. At Shepherd’s Rest, it’s easy to unplug and switch off from the bustle of modern life. And whilst, from the outside, it feels very much like a ‘back to basics’ retreat, the simple façade belies a luxurious interior, including a lavish shower room, sumptuous king-sized bed and a welcoming woodburner. Oh, and there’s a matching shepherd’s hut for your dog just next door!

What all of the aforementioned stays have in common is closeness to nature, and in fact they are but a small sample of the camping, glamping and luxury lodge retreats that Cornwall has to offer. Particularly in recent years, more and more holidaymakers in the UK have been looking to Cornish soil when it comes to booking their breaks, and for many, this has left a lasting longing to return time and time again. This, in turn, has sparked an upward trend of visitors deciding to invest in their own little slice of Cornish paradise, from cottage boltholes by the sea, to luxurious lodges on resorts with all of the amenities required for the

ultimate holiday. And why wouldn’t they? Not only does it allow you to enjoy your own holiday home, designed inside just the way you want it and at any time of year, there is also the benefit of additional income and a means of recouping your investment by letting your holiday home to guests during times that you’re not using it.

One such resort is Retallack Resort & Spa (awayresorts.co.uk). Located in the countryside and open all year round, Retallack offers visitors seasonal watersports, a spa and health club, an indoor swimming pool, a stunning location and more, including an on-site bar and eatery. It also offers up a healthy dose of luxury in the accommodation available, including two, three and four-bedroom barns, available for purchase for those hoping to invest in their own future holidays. Architecturally designed and with designer interiors, these modular build holiday homes can be bought to start, or add to, a property portfolio, with buying options to suit different investors.

Another is Ocean Cove (ocean-cove.co.uk), where holiday home ownership is about so much more than simply owning a second home. Rather, it is about a way of life that you’ll enjoy each and every time you come to stay. With facilities including an indoor pool, steam room, sauna and gym open to owners seven days a week, from 9.30am to 5pm, this particular resort also offers a spectacular location on the north coast between Boscastle and Tintagel –an area steeped in myth and legend, most notably that of King Arthur. This places you, as an owner, in prime position to enjoy the abundant walks, nature trails and cycle tracks that characterise the area. Nearby there are calm, clear waters for swimming, and with Bodmin Moor on the doorstep, there are endless days of adventure to be enjoyed. And this is what makes owning your own holiday home here so attractive; the area is so rich in sights of beauty, trails and places to explore, that you could never enjoy it all in one visit. But as an owner, you needn’t choose between them, as whatever you’re unable to see this time, you can add to the itinerary for your next visit.

As you probably know, all of the mentioned stays and resorts are but a flavour of what Cornwall has to offer. In truth, there are countless options out there for those in search of a means of escaping to Cornwall and reconnecting with nature. Which is good, because as destinations go for those who love the outdoors, we think you’ll agree: Cornwall is tough to beat!

SILVER VALLEY COTTAGE

A beautifully presented detached period cottage bordering the Tresillian river, with large gardens and a delightful shepherd's hut

Silver Valley Cottage is a fabulous, detached period cottage that is very quirky and full of character. The property was purchased at auction by the current owners in 2012 when it needed complete refurbishment. It has been transformed and extensively renovated in a very sympathetic way, creating this truly individual detached family home. It has been extended substantially at the rear and now has accommodation over three floors.

It is believed that the original part of Silver Valley Cottage was an engine house originally associated with Wheal Albion Mine in the 19th century, so it has to be one of the earliest conversions in Cornwall. Silver Valley Cottage stands in a very private setting adjacent to Tresillian River which runs along the south-

eastern boundary of the property. The gardens and grounds extend to approximately 1.15 acres and they are now level and mainly lawned, so easily maintained. At the far end of the garden is a superb shepherd's hut which is built to the highest of standards with light, power and drainage connected, perfect for overflow accommodation, and enjoying views over the river with decking and hot tub.

The cottage itself has accommodation over three floors and includes four bedrooms, the master of which has an en-suite shower room, kitchen/dining room, living room, cloakroom, bathroom, utility and playroom/ home office. The majority of rooms enjoy views over the garden or river and there are many character features together with two woodburning stoves, natural slate, wooden floors and exposed beams. An internal viewing is essential.

Rohrs & Rowe offer their take on the appeal of the Lizard Peninsula.

ì ABOVE RIGHT Pengarrock Farm, Porthallow ê BELOW La Flouder Thatch, Poldhu - Sold

As the southerly most area of the British mainland, the Lizard Peninsula offers up some unique experiences that make it a very desirable place, not just to visit, but to lay down some roots too.

Firstly, framing this ancient landscape are a number of wonderful beaches. Starting on the west side there’s Loe Bar, a tract of sand that separates the sea from the largest expanse of fresh water in Cornwall, reputedly the last resting place of Excalibur! Definitely a place to visit with a picnic on a summer’s day. Working round you’ll encounter Dollar Cove (a favourite location for the recent TV series Poldark) and Gunwalloe Church Cove –ideal for swimming and body boarding or just kicking back and sunbathing. Not far after this is Poldhu, the ‘surfer’s beach’, complete

with sand-side café. However, the jewel in the peninsula’s crown must be Kynance Cove, dubbed Britain's best beach by many, and it's not hard to understand why. A beach which is accessible at both low and high water, Kennack Sands lies on the east coast of the Lizard peninsula. There is a rocky outcrop that splits the beach almost in two (east and west) and low tide provides ample room for those classic beach games.

As you would expect, from a piece of land surrounded on three sides by the sea, there are plenty of opportunities to engage in water sports – from traditional surfing to paddle boarding as well as in-shore diving and canoeing. You can bring your own kit but all of these activities are well catered for by locally run businesses.

ideal and body boarding

Unsurprisingly, it is also a treasure trove of places and activities. With its hard rocky coastline combined with its proximity to the entrance to the English Channel, the peninsula is an explorer's and walker's paradise. Stepping back from the more obvious destinations you'll find the lesser known 'best kept secrets' – places such as Gillan Cove, concealed just inside the mouth of the Gillan Creek and backed by the woodland of the Helford; LIFESTYLE 30 | CORNWALL LIVING

Tremayne Quay, built by Sir Richard Vyvyan in 1847, anticipating a visit from Queen Victoria. The planned visit never happened but the quay is now a Grade II listed structure. The sheltered coastal village of Porthallow, once a busy fishing village with a thriving pilchard fleet, is well worth a visit as is the local pub, the Five Pilchards! Just north of here is Nare Point, the site of an ex-MOD observatory, where panoramic views encompass St. Mawes castle across the bay. Two places that will find you going back to, time and again, are St. Anthony and Cadgwith, the latter for its charm and the fact that it's a real working village that maintains a way of life almost completely forgotten elsewhere.

After all these activities you’ll need to replenish and refuel. Again, you won’t find the area wanting. The Mullion Cove Hotel welcomes diners with its extensive fish and seafood menus and has regularly received two rosettes from the AA for its exceptional food. Just along the coast is the Polurrian Hotel with its contemporary vibe, catering for those seeking a relaxed, child-friendly environment. Further round the coast is the Housel Bay Hotel mainlining on locally grown produce with its menus inspired by the seasons. And of course, there are traditional pubs and cafes dotted about the landscape, such as the Halzephron Inn at Gunwalloe, the inland bistro and wild campsite Fat Apples Cafe near Porthallow or the Shipwrights nudging the shoreline of the Helford river.

With their in-depth knowledge of the area, Rohrs & Rowe are in the ideal position to find your dream property here or to help you sell. In fact, their negotiator, Jason Fletcher, spent twelve years living on the Lizard and now resides at its gateway in Helston. The team at Rohrs & Rowe have a lot of experience selling in the area with some fantastic successes over the last couple of years. As testimony, we can highlight four properties that they have recently completed on.

The Barn in Manaccan, sold in early 2023, is a charming detached residence that sits within a beautiful private setting. This exceptional house has been built in the style of a barn and its design provides spacious accommodation.

One of its unique features is a garden labyrinth! Also sold in early 2023 is Colvennor Farmhouse that offers up views across Mounts Bay. This former farmhouse has huge charm and many original features to enjoy. The drawing room is really lovely, featuring an impressive inglenook fireplace and views into the private rear garden. Two properties that sold back in 2021 are Tredower – an immaculately finished, non-listed four-bedroom former farmhouse which had recently been meticulously renovated throughout and Penmarth House in Coverack – a fabulous residence set in a commanding position, that affords it the most outstanding panoramic views across the harbour and bay.

Finally, if you find yourself ready to make the move then there are two properties that are waiting to be snapped up. Pengarrock Farm – a gorgeous former farmhouse in a stunning location, with a courtyard of beautiful stone barns provides three attractive holiday cottages. The property is unlisted and consists of a handsome farmhouse and an unspoilt courtyard of stone barns. All are set within delightful gardens and grounds just a short walk from the coast and the pretty hamlet of Porthallow. Alma House – a superbly renovated and impeccably presented four/ five-bedroom semi-detached house, set in the heart of Mullion. It has been extensively updated with the current owners creating a very special primary residence, investment property or holiday home that offers stylish and comfortable accommodation throughout.

So, if you are looking to buy a home on the Lizard, we would highly recommend a visit. Or, if you have a home here and are considering selling, be sure to get in touch to see how Rohrs & Rowe’s expert local knowledge can help.

Think steam, water, heat and the regular night time and morning rituals. It’s here that South West Carpets can really help you make the correct choice.

Aesthetically speaking, flooring in the overall design of your bathroom can make or break the finished result. It’s a tricky choice though, as style has to be married with functionality. As stockists of some of the most advanced products on the market, South West Carpets are well placed to be able to meet your twin requirements. Firstly, there’s Amtico, a name

associated with quality and innovation. Their LVT range easily hits the ‘lovely flooring’ button with a choice of wood, stone or abstract designs along with endless patterns and product combinations. It also pushes the pragmatic lever too. For a start its antibacterial and water-resistant qualities lend it perfectly to being sited in a wet atmosphere; and combined with its anti-slip properties it makes for the ideal choice. What’s more it’s easy to clean, repair or replace and unlike delicate natural surfaces, Amtico LVT takes minimum effort to maintain.

Alternatively, you could go with what Karndean has to offer from their inspirational range of bathroom floor tiles. Providing protection from splashes, spills and slips, their luxury vinyl tiles are not only practical for everyday use but they’re perfect for adhering to and extending your home decor style. From classic stone to a contemporary wood look or bold abstract patterns, you’ll find a beautiful floor that is perfect for you.

Whatever you decide, we’re sure you’ll find what you’re looking for at South West Carpets.

THE ONLY WAY is up

Having established a reputation for honest advice, personal service and long partnerships with owners and customers over the last 59 years, this family-run Cornish business remains steadfast in 2023, despite the uncertain economic climate.

The last few years have been a real rollercoaster for those in the industry, and the Cornish Traditional Cottages (CTC) team have been working hard to ensure their holiday homes are providing great value for customers, ensuring owners of holiday homes can maintain their occupancy levels.

Although economic turbulence continues for 2023, CTC has seen a positive start to the year, with bookings now 27% up on the same period in 2022. Traffic to their website has increased by 34%, with time on the site up 60%, which just goes to show that there is an ever-increasing desire for holidays in this beautiful county with a local, familyrun Cornish business.

Providing value has been at the core of this family-run agency, and in response to the economic climate the team created a Help2Holiday scheme to ensure couples and families can still take their 2023 holiday, whist ensuring that owners can continue to maintain their occupancy levels, which

so far has been very well received with customers old and new.

Location, pet friendliness and quality are always important to customers when choosing their next self-catering holiday in Cornwall, and this year value is certainly one of the key drivers. Outside of the core school holiday weeks, CTC has seen a rise in the number of customers wanting to take a short break, so offering this flexibility will ensure you can infill those less popular weeks!

CTC markets all areas and all types of properties in Cornwall, and you can rest assured you will receive honest and realistic advice from the team about your holiday home. With such vast experience in the industry, you can be certain you’re dealing with experts in the Cornish market.

If you are thinking of investing in a property, looking to convert or are currently letting, make sure to give Charmian or George a call, or get in touch via email!

GETAWAYSGorgeous

Shore Stays is a family-run company based in Rock. Grown out of years of property management experience, founders Emily Harris and Sara Hymas are proud to offer getaways with a twist; think inspiring interiors, unique features and amazing views, all served up alongside the spectacular coast. With a growing portfolio of luxury properties and five-star reviews from holiday makers, we find out what makes Shore Stays different to other holiday letting companies.

Firstly, it’s the personal touch you will find when holidaying with them, as Emily explains: “We boast a small, hand-selected collection of some of the finest private homes within walking distance of the best Cornish beaches. These can be found in Port Isaac, Porthcothan, Polzeath, Rock and Trevone, with more currently under refurbishment in Padstow and Constantine, which is incredibly exciting…watch this space!”

“We believe that what makes us stand out is that we ensure that each holiday experience

is as hassle free as possible, whether that’s scouting out the best local foodie haunts, recommending adventure activities, coastal walks and sight-seeing highlights or even a spot of shopping. We can also recommend nearby services such as private chefs, beauty treatments and food deliveries available to your door. Whatever our guests need, we can offer the best inside knowledge of this incredible county we call our home.”

This sentiment is supported by Shore Stays’ five-star reviews. For example, Beverley M stayed in Beach Cottage, Porthcothan and wrote this glowing testimonial: “We had a wonderful first stay in Beach Cottage. Being able to walk out of your back door onto the sand dunes and immediately be on the gorgeous beach is really very special. The cottage is beautiful, managing to combine luxury and practicality perfectly. From the décor to the small touches throughout the house, it's clear that a lot of thought and care goes into making sure guests feel welcomed and relaxed. We can't wait to return!”

Secondly, it’s not just guests who benefit from excellent service; owners also experience the personal touch when letting with Shore Stays. “If you’re looking to let your property, then it will be in safe hands with Shore Stays," says Sara. “The reliable care and attention we give to managing properties on the north coast of Cornwall is second-to-none because it really is a true passion of ours. As a familyrun business, we offer years of experience and take a personal approach to caring for each property for total peace of mind.”

“We appreciate the time and care that has gone into creating each beautiful property, and it’s our mission to protect it for the owners while sharing it with others who will appreciate it just as much as they do. Whether it’s for long periods of time or just a few weeks, owners just need to let us know the times of year they would like to share their property and we do the rest. We make regular visits to each house and cover full inspections at changeover as standard, fixing any issues ourselves before new visitors arrive, as we have a super maintenance team on call 24/7!”

Shore Stay’s top priority is to establish a great relationship with their owners so they can feel 100% confident that their home is being well cared for; from the finer details such as cleaning products and lightbulbs right through to re-decoration. “We’re proud to use local contractor Terry Harris & Sons, and our maintenance team all live locally, so are contactable 24 hours a day for both owners and guests alike,” adds Sara, If you are interested in browsing the luxury properties on offer from Shore Stays, their wonderful website showcases all options – believe us when we say you’ll be bowled over by how stunning they are! Or why not follow Shore Stays on social for a weekly dose of Cornish ‘wanderlusting’? Whether you’re looking for your next luxury coastal escape or are interested in letting your property, get in touch with Emily or Sara for more details, they would love to hear from you.

CURVEAhead of the

As the 2023 holiday letting season fast approaches, Janine Woods at Cornish Cottage Holidays gives us her top tips on helping your holiday home succeed this year.

If you own a holiday home in Cornwall, there is no denying it has huge income potential. Last year, the county was the second most popular destination for UK staycations, with places like Polzeath, Rock, Port Isaac and Carbis Bay all featuring in the list of top 10 fastest growing holiday getaways. So, how do you make the most of this opportunity? Property Manager at leading agency Cornish Cottage Holidays, Janine Woods, has come up with five ways to give your holiday home the edge!

Optimise your pricing

A successful holiday property will be a yearround business, continuously delivering revenue. Using an agency with intuitive dynamic pricing tools will ensure your holiday home is always priced competitively, yet within parameters set by you. A system like this will automatically adjust your prices in line with demand, facilitating high numbers of bookings at the optimum price.

Accept short breaks

To help increase your bookings, accept short breaks. In 2022, over 20% of Cornish Cottage Holidays’ bookings were for holidays of three, four or five nights – and it seems these getaways are only surging in popularity!

Embrace last minute bookings

Being open to the prospect of accepting last minute bookings is essential. The uncertainty of the times we live in, coupled with the ease of booking last minute breaks, means being flexible with late bookings is necessary for owners who wish to fill their weeks.

The rise of ‘paw-cations’

Since the pandemic, ‘paw-cations’ have increased, with 35% of all bookings now including dogs! Accepting pets is also a great

way to increase your income per booking (with the additional pet charge) – plus it makes your home more appealing out of season for those looking to enjoy coastal dog walks in the shoulder months.

Cater for ‘work-cations’

Good wifi is a priority for 29% of Brits! Around 38% of people will work whilst on holiday, meaning if your property has strong wifi it will be all-the-more desirable.

If you are thinking of letting your holiday home, why not come along to the agency’s free owner event; ‘Successful Holiday Letting’ on 2nd March 2023, from 6pm to 9pm at Heartlands, Redruth? Find out how the holiday letting industry is performing, listen to the team’s predictions for the 2023 season, and get advice on helping your property to reach its full potential from industry experts! To book your place visit bit.ly/SuccesfulHolidayLetting2023.

Find

the holiday home of your dreams at Ocean Cove, and make fond Cornish memories to last a lifetime.

Ocean Cove is a five-star private owners coastal retreat, nestled in the small and lesser known coastal village of Bossiney, between Tintagel and Boscastle. Boasting incredible views out across the dramatic Atlantic Ocean and cliff top, coastal walks can be enjoyed right from the doorstep.

There are 79 lodges in total across the park, kept safe and secure by a gated entrance and an on-site park warden. With brand-new and pre-owned holiday homes for sale, there are a variety to choose from, with sales typically completing within just a month of putting down a deposit. Subletting is not permitted, which keeps this a quiet and peaceful retreat.

Of course, family and friends are welcome to enjoy your property throughout the 12-month season. Owners have exclusive use of the 15m indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym and lounge, which has recently been refurbished to a very high standard, seven days a week. There is also the added benefit of an on-site laundry facility with 24-hour key access.

Cornwall’s Atlantic coast spans over 40 miles from Bude to Perranporth along a wildly beautiful stretch of north Cornwall. Ocean Cove couldn’t be better situated as a holiday home, sitting between the quintessentially Cornish Boscastle harbour and the village

of Tintagel, steeped in myth and legend and home to the impressive Tintagel Castle. You can access both on foot via the South West Coast Path, perfect for working up an appetite before a bite of lunch at The Rocket Store in Boscastle or a well-earned cream tea at the Beach Café, Tintagel Castle.

There are currently three, brand-new holiday homes on site and ready to purchase, with Bay View 14 (£265,000) commanding a much-coveted front row position looking out across rolling meadows to Bossiney Bay beyond. Whichever lodge you choose, you are assured of years of Cornish holidays that will make memories forever!

The ultimate guide to weddings in Cornwall

This issue of Cornwall Living is always one of my favourites as we research and discover the very best of weddings in Cornwall. Catch up with all the latest wedding news in our News and I Dos section (from page 60) where you'll find a host of businesses whose sole purpose is to make your special day the best ever. It's those little details and final flourishes that really make the difference, so it's worth taking the time to source those special added extras.

Cornwall has so many incredible wedding venues, that it's hard to choose a favourite. Each one is special in its own right, but all have one thing in common, incredible locations and excellent service.

At The Park Cornwall (page 63) you can experience an intimate ceremony, a romantic elopement or even a wedding in the delightful yurt village, all just yards from the ocean. Or, celebrate your wedding in Victorian splendour at The Falmouth Hotel. With beautiful gardens and the beach just a stone's throw away, photo opportunities don't get better than this! Similarly, the Harbour Hotel in Padstow (page 65) will take your breath away with its estuary vista and harbourtown location. Head west, and Cape Cornwall Club (page 68) will ensure you have a day to remember. Its rugged backdrop makes for a magical setting and it is licensed to host civil ceremonies indoors and out.

When it comes to looking good, there is no day more important than your wedding, and with this in mind we have inspiration aplenty in our wedding directory (from page 66). Ensuring that this also applies to the groom and his groomsmen, Trevails of Truro (page 62) is the place to go for dapper dressing and stylish top-to-toe tailoring.

Whether it's a small celebration with those you hold dear or a larger gathering for extended family and friends, a day of coastal splendour or an intimate country gathering, now is the time to start planning your special day.

…happy wedding day!

To have and to hold

When it comes to choosing a wedding venue, location has to be top of the list and we’ve found a unique one that will make the ultimate backdrop to your big day. The Land’s End Hotel, named for its position literally at the land’s end, has tranquil panoramic views over the ocean. As we emerge from winter and the warmth returns to the sea air with the advent of springtime sunshine, the surrounding clifftops become ablaze with colour as gorse, heather, thrift and sea campions burst into flower.

Following your ceremony, where better to enjoy refreshing welcome drinks than outside in the grounds or on the clifftop terrace. Due to its prime clifftop position, The Land’s End Hotel offers an everchanging setting for truly breath-taking wedding photographs. The area is never short of picturesque sunsets where rich colours adorn the turquoise waters and fill the sky to the horizon.

The wedding menus are carefully designed by the hotel’s chefs and include The Taste of Cornwall which champions ingredients from the Duchy’s bountiful natural larder. Guests can enjoy a drink at the newly refurbished bar and your special day can end with the most special of offerings available at this dramatic coastal destination: a spectacular firework display.

The Land’s End Hotel team are thrilled to be offering a 25% discount on all wedding packages booked between now and September 2023. So, why not celebrate your special day in clifftop luxury?

TO COOK A wilder way

In line with this month’s cover feature, Jude Kereama, Head Chef and owner of Porthleven’s Kota and Kota Kai, discusses the joys of wild cooking.

Growing up in New Zealand was all about the great outdoors. All our family holidays were spent either camping in the most beautiful spots in New Zealand on beaches and lakes or trekking to a cabin on one of the various bush tracks with family friends. Endless summer days were full of adventure and along the way we would make lots of new friends with other families. I absolutely loved camping and there were always games of camp cricket, rugby, baseball and volleyball to keep us entertained when we weren’t adventuring in the water. The days would last for ever and the cricket game would only end because of fading daylight. We would all then sit around the fire and have our dinner and after all the exercise, we were all mighty hungry!

Back then, we always seemed to be the best fed kids and we would often share our food with others in the camp who were curious to see what we had cooking. Dad always had something to forage for and he and his friends would go off fishing and come back with some fish to barbeque. The best things to forage for were all the shellfish that were abundant. Green lipped mussels, cockles, surf clams, crayfish (crawfish or spiny lobster they call it here), sea weeds. But one favourite thing that we used to forage for were Blue Swimmer crabs. They are a medium-size crab with a much softer shell than its Cornish cousin. They are super sweet and perfect for my mum’s Singapore Chilli Crab recipe. My mother never knew how to pack lightly and our food bags were always full of her favourite ingredients to cook with! That meant there was definitely a lot of Asian ingredients that travelled with us on our epic long holidays. Mum’s Singapore Chilli Crab is one of my favourite dishes of all time. Sweet, spicy, and punchy with ginger, garlic, and coriander, I would pick up the crab, pick the meat and suck on the bodies to get every last morsel I could find! We would then mop up the delicious sauce with loaves of white bread smeared thick with butter. Oh, it was like heaven to me – albeit a sticky, messy one! After tea we could run and have a sundowner swim and come back and warm up beside the fire and if we were lucky, maybe a marshmallow to roast before a well-needed sleep. I loved that crab dish so much that I had to replicate a dish in honour of it on my menu at Kota Kai. I have used a whole soft shell crab with a crisp spiced batter, mango slaw, seaweed mayo, Singapore chilli crab sauce, coriander, and all popped into a bao bun. Homage to my mum’s dish. It is still one of the most popular dishes on the menu. I love wild cooking. It can produce the best meals as you sit somewhere beautiful outdoors and cook on a camp stove, portable barbeque or an open fire. Living in Porthleven and having the beach down the road is perfect for cooking barbeques. A typical one for me would be fresh mackerel fillets, scallops, and a bit of marinated beef, all cooked in courses. It is so much nicer to cook in courses; to a lot of people it seems a bit crazy, as most tend to throw everything on at once. I have a portable Japanese Konro grill, which is like a small barbeque that I use. It is perfect for cooking food over hot coals for a few hours. It has so much control over how hot the coals are, so you don’t end up burning your food to a crisp while it is still raw in the middle.

During the recent pandemic, many of us found new ways to make the most of the outdoors. I personally spent lockdown with my best friends as they were my support bubble. We spent days

in the woods beside their house, wild cooking. We had a fire pit that we cooked everything on, from barbeques, flat breads and baked potatoes in foil, to cast-iron pot stews (Croatian Peka), dauphinoise potatoes, smoked flamed caponata, whole chickens, leg of lamb, beef steaks with chimichurri, and anything we could possibly heat! It was so much fun sitting around the fire sharing great food and stories with my best mates, my son, and my godchildren. The children were also in charge of lighting the fires and gathering wood, which is an invaluable lesson to learn. It was also great for them to learn how to cook on the fire and to know when to turn the food. As well as cooking, we went foraging and came back with sacks full of wild garlic that we put into everything from soups and pesto, to salsa verde, pizza, even as a side dish. It was so joyous to cook over fire in the wild.

To anybody who loves the outdoors, I would say give wild cooking a go and enjoy the freedom of it. A few tips are to make sure you look after your fire properly and to have a shovel nearby to push embers away, or to push them closer to the food depending on how much heat you need. Be prepared, and bring everything you need in one go so you’re not traipsing back and forth for extra equipment. Use cast iron pots as they are the most fire proof and are great conductors of heat. Also, use a wire mesh over the fire; chuck mussels straight onto it and use tongs to take them as they open. Delicous!

They freshly bake buttery pastries, succulent pasties and amazing cakes as well as offering light lunches that include sandwiches, soups and sharing platters brimming with local cheeses and cured meats. If you’re visiting this delightful epicurean emporium in Falmouth then there is no excuse not to linger with a barista coffee and a sweet treat at one of its café tables.

However, it’s not just visitors to Falmouth who can benefit from a taste of The Cornish Kitchen. If you’re holidaying in Cornwall, whether that be in a self-catering cottage or one of the Duchy’s wonderful glamping sites, The Cornish Kitchen can deliver welcome hampers, food boxes or gift baskets ready for your arrival. Choose a breakfast box and you’ll have everything you need to start the day! Free-range Cornish eggs, local bacon and sausages, bread, milk, juice and pastries to set you up for the day.

If you’re heading out for a day’s adventure, why not treat yourself to a picnic hamper full of tasty treats? Doorstop sandwiches burst

with tangy cheese, home-cured ham and lashings of pickle served with a fresh salad, followed by slices of Rebecca’s incredible cakes. Her gluten-free brownies, fruit crumble cakes and sweet pecan slices are the talk of the town! All washed down of course with a local cider or beer, or why not try one of their excellent non-alcoholic tipples?

If you're looking for catering with a difference for your next event then search no more. The Cornish Kitchen can also bring their unique taste of Cornwall to your wedding, party or corporate event. With a wide range of budgets and menus available, your tables could be groaning with homemade quiches, tasty soups, pasties (of course), grazing boards, patés, and salads all paired with local or British wines. Indeed, if there’s something you would like that John and Rebecca don’t stock, they will even endeavour to get it for you. This is curated food at its finest.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

The Cheltenham Festival is the highlight of the jump-racing calendar. Held over four exciting days of racing, the most prestigious and talented horses, jockeys, trainers, breeders and owners combine for a sporting spectacle like no other. With so many fans descending on the racecourse, it can certainly become a bit busy to say the least! Worry not, as we’ve discovered a way of avoiding the queues, missing the traffic and arriving in style.

Castle Air Helicopter Charters has 45 years of industry experience and flying with them has myriad benefits; not least of which is the short journey time from Cornwall, meaning you’ll arrive refreshed and ready for the excitement ahead. Cheltenham Racecourse welcomes arrivals on race days by helicopter and it may come as a surprise to learn that it operates the busiest temporary airfield in the UK, receiving 400 flights over The Festival week alone.

Your VIP charter flight will be on board one of Castle Air’s own fleet of six-seat, luxury fitted, executive Agusta A109 turbine helicopters, operated by an experienced team

of highly trained professionals, and safety is always top priority for Castle Air. Expect an executive experience as you fly high above the Duchy, taking in the stunning aerial views if the weather’s kind, before heading to Cheltenham’s infamous racecourse. You will touch down in style directly into the racecourse’s heli-field before catching the shuttle service down to the main site. After such a short journey time, you’ll have plenty of time to visit the extensive shopping village, kick back with a glass of bubbles listening to some of the Festival’s live music or enjoy some fine food at one of the racecourse’s excellent restaurants. Then all you need do is study the form, soak up the atmosphere and hopefully put on some winning bets!

OF TALENT A wealth

Maya

Established in 2006, this unique jewellery gallery stands apart from the crowd, exhibiting extraordinary work from over fifty British designers.

From engagement rings to wedding necklaces, the occasional to the groundbreaking, there will be a piece of jewellery for the discerning buyer who is looking for something that cuts away from the ordinary at the Victoria Sewart Contemporary Jewellery Gallery.

This year their regular Ringing the Changes exhibition, running from 25th March for three months, is set to feature some incredible work, with everything from the modern via traditional and sculptural rings, to pieces containing precious stones, art pieces and much, much more. Showcasing the work of six designers, all carefully chosen to form a snug fit with the prevailing spirit of the gallery created by Victoria, you’ll be in for a treat. Here’s a little synopsis as to what you can expect to find:

Corinne Evans

In her studio on the edge of Dartmoor, Corinne creates stunning intricate jewellery using the heritage technique of fine flat chain mail, fashioning luxurious and elegant contemporary jewellery.

Maya Selway

A regular exhibitor at Goldsmith’s Fair in London, each of her rings is hand made at her studio, created to be worn every day for a lifetime and destined to become one of your most loved treasures.

Sian Evans

A goldsmith from Dorset, Sian is inspired by archaeology, fashion, and geology. Her rings are made using ancient jewellery making and casting techniques.

Shakti Ellenwood

Inspired by Native American Indian jewellery, Shakti uses stamped patterns to create unique textures on her fair-trade gold rings; talismans made with love and blessed with healing mantras – a prayer captured in gold!

A small family run business in north Cornwall specialising in old cut diamonds and fine gemstones – soft and tactile, simple and elegant, reminiscent of jewellery from ancient times re-imagined in modern design.

Tamara Gomez

A contestant on ‘All That Glitters’ Tamara Gomez hand crafts fine jewellery that celebrates natural beauty and individuality from her London studio. Rough cut diamonds are a common feature in her rings, celebrating the beauty of the uncut stone.

We think it all sounds very exciting and are looking forward to heading there in March! But, in the very unlikely event of not being able to find what you're looking for, then you can book a jewellery workshop course. With over 20 years of teaching experience under her belt, Victoria will guide you through each step of the process, giving you the skills to handcraft your very own ring.

Remember, your jewellery is as unique as you are. Discover yourself at Victoria Sewart Contemporary Jewellery Gallery!

TREASURESTimeless

Calling the harbour village of Porthleven home for more than ten years, owners of The Jewellery Workshop, Clair and Paul Pennington, create and curate an exquisite collection of jewellery, watches and gifts, with the help of Michelle, Aoise, David and Rachel. Be it a bespoke item specially crafted to set an heirloom stone, a unique wedding ring to say ‘I do’, or an elegant watch whose design will stand the test of time, the precious pieces displayed throughout the shop catch the light from every facet. Their growing collection of pre-loved jewellery appeals to those with sustainability in mind, as does the fact that they can repurpose gold, silver and stones from customer’s much-loved pieces with sentimental value, giving them new life and a contemporary makeover.

Clair and Paul know only too well the importance of such items: “Having someone take the time to understand what you are looking for is just as important as the making here at The Jewellery Workshop,” says Paul. “Along with helping customers find new or preloved jewellery, we also love creating unique pieces from family heirlooms – it’s just a lovely way of creating individual pieces that people will cherish for a lifetime.” One thing that the team are particularly proud of is their

bespoke wedding ring service, where dream rings for the big day are made right there on site – there’s even an option to use gold from a family heirloom or treasured piece!

The Jewellery Workshop is also home to an elaborate collection of watches such as Bauhaus, Iron Annie and Zeppelin, all of which are made near Munich by the same manufacturer to an incredibly high standard. There are lots of beautiful models in the shop available to try on, and while you’re there the sparkling range of crystal gifts make perfect little presents.

It is clear to see that Clair and Paul are extremely passionate about what they do, believing that jewellery is so much more than precious stones and metals. In fact, the workshop is underpinned by the understanding that jewellery can be bought, or commissioned, for any number of reasons. “Every step of the journey is unique to the customer and it’s such a joy to be a part of it,” says Clair.

BESPOKE Beautifully

Afine artist specialising in marine life and botanical art, Florence has always been fascinated by the thriving elements of nature that have surrounded her since childhood, having painted her first mackerel at three years old. Today, Florence has populated restaurants and venues all over Cornwall and further afield with her unique take on the natural world.

If you’ve visited Stein’s Fishmongers and Seafood Bar in Padstow in recent years, you may have noticed a rather striking mural adorning the restaurant, bright with finely detailed fish and marine life. As her very first big commissioned installation, this is a landmark piece for Florence. Painted on 23 beautifully aged and repurposed scaffolding planks, this charming mural resides in the Fisheries as an inviting visual insight as to what may be on the menu throughout the Stein establishments.

In places like The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery, Florence has impressed her talents straight onto the walls themselves, filling the space with her creativity and finely tuned artistic talent in the form of botanical beauty, a project that she holds close to her heart: “I would love to be working mainly on murals – this is a huge passion of mine,” Florence

explains. “There is something about murals which, for me, tells so much more of a story than an artwork hung. I will cherish the opportunity given to me, and the faith placed in me to paint the botanical mural for the Duchy Nursery, a first for me and them.” While her work steals the show in restaurants and venues around the UK, and has been exhibited within private exhibitions, art fairs and is now decorating homes all over the world, Florence is turning her attention to private homes. While she has introduced her skills to Cornish homes, her work has taken her across the UK to deliver bespoke murals to anyone looking to add something particularly special to their interiors, often reaching around more than one wall to add an extra personalised feel. Welcoming challenges of all shapes and sizes, make sure to contact Florence for your very own home installation.

Above Mullion Cove by Janet Judge

A retrospective exhibition of a friend and member of Lizard Art (who recently passed away) running from 18th March to 2nd April.

Janet had been painting professionally for over 30 years and exhibited widely throughout the country. Immersed in the landscape, she frequently walked on the coast path which was a huge inspiration for her and her work. Janet moved beyond describing the subject to also conveying its atmosphere and her emotional response to it.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

At any one time, there are 30 children and young people in Cornwall who need a safe place to call home; that home could be yours. You could be single, live in a flat or rent your property – you don't need to be married and have a three bedroom detached house to foster! All you need to be a fosterer is to provide a place of comfort and stability for a child who needs a roof over their head and a little love and care.

Fostering provides a safe and secure home for children who cannot live with their own parents. Often, this is on a temporary basis whilst parents seek assistance in amending their circumstances. Other children stay in foster care permanently, some are fostered and some move on to live independently. There

are different types of fostering, from shortterm emergency placements, to providing a short break for a family, as well as permanent placements, with plenty of options to suit your working life.

The children range in age from newborn right up to teenagers, and some are sibling groups. Keeping siblings together means they can support each other and helps with that feeling of familiarity, and in fact, there is a particular need for placements for teenagers and siblings. Given time, warmth and support, these children and young people can develop and reach their fullest potential. Like all children, they need to be part of a family where they are nurtured and feel safe.

Cornwall Council’s fostering service offers amazing support for all foster carers 24/7, 365 days a year. The Central Support Team includes health specialists, youth workers and educational psychology professionals, and there’s always a member of the team available for you to talk to or to provide help, should it be needed. If you could offer a child, teenager or siblings a home, we know the team would love to hear from you.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK

With over 20 million people in the UK said to be currently suffering from painful joints, ligaments, tendons or muscular pain, it is unsurprising that current services are struggling to meet the demand. Symptoms of pain can be caused by an ongoing condition such as a repetitive strain injury (RSI), osteoarthritis, or from an acute injury such as a stress fracture or sprain. Whatever the cause, pain can leave us feeling worn down and prevent us from doing the things we love.

Thanks to a new Pain and Injury Service at Cornwall Medical Group (CMG), Cornwall now has access to an easy way to reduce the symptoms of a range of common musculoskeletal pains. Consultations are now available to book at CMG’s clinic in Probus, with Sports and Exercise Doctor, Dr Chris Ireland. We caught up with Dr Ireland to see how this service is helping people across Cornwall to get back to doing what they love. “You don’t have to have a sports or exerciserelated injury to come to see me,” Dr Ireland begins, “a Sports and Exercise Doctor simply specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and injuries.”

The Pain and Injury Service has been set up at CMG to provide a one-stop-shop for assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing rehabilitation. The team consists of highly trained clinicians, with close ties to GPs, Radiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists and more. They can use previous scans or diagnostics, diagnose in-house, or rapidly get you access to

diagnostics to get to the bottom of what is causing your pain.

The service also includes evidence-based biological interventions that may not be readily available on the NHS, including regenerative therapies like Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) and Ostenil Injections (Hyaluronic Acid or HA injections). These use your body’s own ‘healing powers’ to restore strength and tissue integrity.

At CMG, they use ultrasound imaging to guide their treatments, to ensure tissue-specific delivery and optimised pain relief; there is no ‘guesswork’ involved at any stage. Focussing on proven, fast and efficient methods that are minimally invasive and promote rapid returnto-activity times, everything is done under one roof, making it easier and faster to reduce your pain and get you back moving again.

CMG’s Pain and Injury Service can help in the treatment of conditions including osteoarthritis, frozen shoulders (adhesive capsulitis), tendon degeneration (tendinopathy) of the ankle, knee and shoulder, repetitive strain injuries, sprains and stress fractures. The service also provides help with sports-specific injuries and assessment, obesity and functional nutrition, return-toactivity assessments and much, much more. If you are struggling with pain, why not see if Cornwall Medical Group can help?

DETACHED COTTAGE-STYLE DWELLING IN A SPECTACULAR COASTAL LOCATION

This is a rare opportunity to purchase a detached house set within a generous plot of land in a very special geographic location. Nanshute Cottage is one of very few properties within the built-up environs of Portscatho having such a large garden and access from two road frontages. All main rooms enjoy the magnificent coastal views and whilst the house has an easterly aspect the rear garden has maximum advantage of the afternoon and evening sun. It commands fabulous coastal views stretching from the harbour in Portscatho across the entirety of Gerrans Bay and including Nare Head and the Dodman in the distance. The dwelling was built in 1922 or thereabouts and is still delightfully original in terms of its layout and design. Many windows have replacement double glazing with simulated small pane casements and just 4/5 years ago the roof was replaced in natural slate. Whilst presently affording 3 bedroom accommodation (2 bedrooms on the first floor and a third at ground level) there is plenty of space to extend the dwelling, subject to any necessary consent. LET THERE BE SIGHT

The human eye works like a camera. It has a natural lens that allows images to focus on the retina. This lens is transparent until it turns cloudy and becomes opaque – otherwise known as a cataract. A cataract is most commonly caused by age-related changes to the lens. Occasionally, cataracts can develop at a much younger age due to the use of steroid, injury to the eye or metabolic disorders.

Modern cataract surgery is a very sophisticated procedure performed by highly trained and skilled ophthalmic surgeons using technologically advanced equipment. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes under local anaesthesia, requires no stitches and no hospital stay. The surgeon, using a phacoemulsification machine extracts the lens through a small 2.5 mm incision. An acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted in its place, restoring clear eyesight.

According to Mr Patwardhan, standard IOL, also known as monofocal lens, gives clear focus at a fixed distance. So, if the clear focus is for far distance, the person will need glasses to read books or work on the computer. Premium IOLs, however, are specially designed to reduce or eliminate dependence on spectacles. These

lenses are not routinely available on the NHS. Multifocal IOLs provide focus at all distances and Toric IOLs correct astigmatism.

The new ‘Trifocal’ technology used in multifocal IOL, available through the Duchy Hospital, allows near, intermediate and distance vision without the need for glasses.

Mr Patwardhan continues: “Toric IOLs are designed to correct astigmatism, a condition in which person’s cornea is shaped more like the side of a rugby ball than a football. This can be corrected by inserting a Toric IOL in the eye. By correcting astigmatism, one can expect spectacle-free clear distance vision.”

There is an appropriate IOL for everyone, be it standard or premium. Consultation at Duchy Hospital offers the opportunity to ascertain which IOL is suitable for an individual based on their eye examination, lifestyle and expectations.
