Cornwall, in recent years, has only cemented its long-held reputation as a source of inspiration for creatives across a multitude of disciplines and industries. Now, as the summer sun begins to reach the peak of its seasonal arc, such creative vibrancy is breaking the bonds of the colder weather and exploding in celebration, with festivals cropping up across the county bringing artists, musicians, chefs, academics, artisans and more together to celebrate in creative collaboration. In this month’s cover feature (page 10), Rosie Cattrell takes a tour of Cornwall’s festivals, exploring the eclectic range of celebrations taking place beneath the summer sun.
The county is also a popular choice for those seeking a better way of living, particularly after a hard few years spent working in the city! LuxuryLife Developments, on page 17, has just the thing – a brand-new development of luxury residential park homes on the fringes of Newquay aimed at the over 45s. We also have an incredible showcase of Cornish property from page 30 from award-winning estate agents, Rohrs and Rowe, with everything from sprawling country residences to contemporary boltholes overlooking the water. And if you are planning a move, you’ll be sure to need ideas to decorate your new abode.
If that’s the case, check out Jo Downs’ latest fused glass collections on page 19; celebrating Cornwall in stunning coastal colourways, Jo’s signature approach to fused glass art is a worthy purchase for anybody with the Duchy in their heart.

Of course, for some, time spent in Cornwall will only be temporary, but that’s not to say that it shouldn’t be spent in luxury. With this in mind, we’ve curated some fabulous coastal escapes from page 22. We also feature north coast holiday experts, Latitude50, who are currently offering the chance to win an incredible week away in Polzeath (page 24), before discovering what Beach Pads in St Ives has to offer those seeking a stay by the sand. Add to this some wonderful homefrom-homes on The Cornish Holiday Company portfolio (28), a hotel stay with all the luxuries laid on at Talland Bay (29), and the chance to purchase your own slice of holiday heaven at Atlantic Coast Holiday Park (27), and we have plenty of ways this issue for you to make life-long Cornish memories.

Dancing in the SUNLIGHT
Coming together in the summer of 2023 to celebrate music, food and creativity in the glorious Cornish sunshine.
Words by Rosie Cattrell
COVER FEATURE 10 | CORNWALL LIVING
Josh Harkon (Boardmasters Festival)
One of my favourite things about summer in Cornwall is the constant feel of celebration throughout the warmer months. For me, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of complete contentment you get when you’re standing in the sunshine amongst friends with a cold cider in hand, listening to the familiar melodies of a favourite band wash over you in a live performance to surpass any recording as the sun goes down on a perfect day. Down here in the Duchy we are certainly ones to celebrate the good things in life; fine food and drink, theatrical performances to enthral old and young, and live music to get the toes tapping from acts all over the world. Looking back on Cornwall’s celebratory successes last year, I can’t help but look forward to another festival season as we emerge from the chill of a wintery hibernation to dance together in the sunlight. One thing we do very well down here in the South West is food, so it’s no wonder we like to base entire festivals around it. On 21st to 23rd April this year, the ever-popular Porthleven Food Festival drew revellers from all across the county and further afield for a weekend of mouth-watering morsels and toetapping tunes to kick off the summer season. The Chef’s Theatre showcased the talents of the likes of Anthony Worrall Thompson and Jude Kereama amongst a host of others, while seemingly endless street food vendors tempted tongues left, right and centre. Although the rain made a dramatic appearance at times, it certainly didn’t manage to dampen the festival spirit, and acts like Smokey’s King Shufflers, Oh My God! It’s The Church and Old Time Sailors had folk up and dancing late into the evening.
to 28th May would bring crafters, traders,
May saw the arrival of the St Ives Food Festival from 12th to 14th down on the sandy expanse of Porthminster Beach, a sandy-toed gathering of artisan tents, food and drink vendors, chef demos from Jack Stein and more, and evening music sessions with bands like The Scribes, Showhawk Duo and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys to round off the days. Falmouth Food Festival wouldn’t be far behind, and 26th to 28th May would bring crafters, traders, music and art together for a true taste of the town.
Cornwall’s wonderfully weird, awardwinning family festival, The Great Estate, certainly did not disappoint this year, and 2nd to 4th June brought back ‘the most rambunctious garden fete’ to be delighted in once more at the glorious Scorrier Estate, packed to the rafters with magic, marvel and mystery as usual. Workshops, talks, arts and crafts could be found at The Sanctuary in a glade of calm and

Affectionately known as ‘the greatest house party in a field’, Leopallooza will find its home once more at The Wyldes from 21st to 23rd July. With some of the biggest musical names gracing the stages each year, 2023 promises an exceptional line up yet again, with more top-notch headline acts set to join the evergrowing list. From the biggest beats of acts like Hong Kong Ping Pong at Treeline’s dance stage, to Mono’s legendary rock stage, there truly is a band for all tastes, and to be blown away by headliners Orbital, Bloc Party and AURORA,
find your way to the Ade Burt Memorial Stage. Renamed in 2022 after the team’s beloved Technical Director Ade Burt, who help design and build it, the main stage remembers a man who helped to bring Leopallooza to where it is today. The legendary Rogue Theatre will once again take over the woodland to bring an immersive world of theatre, workshops, downthe-rabbit-hole style journeys and songs for little ones and big ones, not forgetting their trademark magic and mystery! If you prefer to dance to your own beat, The Quiet Riot’s silent disco invites shape throwing at its finest, and for the comedy lovers among you The Funny Side comedy tent will certainly put a smile on your face.
For a voyage of culinary discovery and musical mischief, the Rock Oyster Festival at Dinham House from 27th to 30th July promises demonstrations from foodie favourites like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, alongside mouth-watering taster plates, al-fresco dining and masterclasses for those looking to grow their passions alongside renowned chefs. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Camel Estuary, The Oyster Stage brings us an exciting range of musical acts this year, with artists like Sophie Ellis Bexter, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and a Groove Armada DJ set to bring full-bellied friends together after a day of feasting to feel the love as the sun goes down.

old and new bursting the seams of the plump
Last year, Boardmasters brought us sunset blinders like Joy Crookes, Palace, Tom Grennan and the unforgettable Kings of Leon, a hypnotic experience that I for one will never forget, and 2023’s line up promises the event’s continued position on the list of the UK’s biggest and best festivals. With a seemingly endless line up of inspirational musicians old and new bursting the seams of the plump weekend line up from 9th to 13th August, this year is set to raise the bar for Boardmasters yet again. With names like Florence + the Machine, Liam Gallagher, Lorde, Cypress Hill, Rudimental, Ben Howard and The Vaccines among a host of other artists filling the bill, it’s understandable that the weekend draws attendees from all over the country every single year to stand together in green fields alive with the sound of summer while the sun sets into the ocean behind them, casting a golden glow over festival faces. Alongside the magic music line up, Boardmasters would not be the Cornish festival that it is without the worldrenowned surf competition that it plays host in the form of the Boardmasters OPEN, so make sure to head down to Fistral beach to catch the action. With an incredible list of events taking place all across Cornwall this summer, my diary is quickly filling up, and I remember how very lucky I am to live in this beautiful county with such a passion for music, food and coming together in fond celebration while the sun shines over our little corner of the south west.

YOUR IMAGINATIONCapturing
For more than 20 years, glass designer Jo Downs has been making gallery collections that reflect the beauty of the Cornish coast where she lives and works. But she is also known as a maker of beautiful bespoke designs and custom creations that grace homes from London to Dubai and beyond. Jo will tell you that bespoke works are her passion, that they allow her to push the boundaries of contemporary glass design for unique clients and their equally unique homes. In particular, her famous Shoaling Fish and Falling Leaf installations have inspired numerous private projects, and the launch of her multipiece chandeliers in 2014 has since led to some of her most stunning and technically challenging projects.
Private commissions command a personal service, and from first enquiry to the finished piece, your project will be in the hands of Jo herself and her specialist team. “With bespoke work, what the client imagines is at the centre of everything,” says Jo. “My initial designs on paper reflect their thoughts and inspirations, and are tailored to the space in which the work will hang. It’s a collaboration between artist and client in the old-fashioned sense, but with 21st century studio facilities to make it a reality." As a first step, the team at Jo’s
Sunningdale gallery offer a free consultation service for clients. Whether you have a framed or wall-mounted panel, statement installation or one-of-a-kind chandelier in mind, you can explore different concepts, colours and technical design options at Sunningdale. From there, your project can be advanced to detailed design work and custom creation at Jo’s private studio in Cornwall. Jo also offers a full installation service for larger works, by arrangement.
Jo Downs Handmade Glass Sunningdale also runs regular workshops where you can try your hand at glass fusing with studio professionals. Each session includes a demonstration, followed by the opportunity to make pieces including fused-glass hangings, framed artworks and seasonal decorations. For information on Jo’s bespoke service or to book workshops, see jodowns.com, or visit Jo Downs Handmade Glass, London Road, Sunningdale, Ascot SL5 0EP, open Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am to 5pm.

THE WIN In for
With a treasure trove of gifts to give away this summer, Latitude50 have something rather special in store.
It’s not often that a shining opportunity such as this comes along, but when it does, the only thing we can do is dive right on in and keep our fingers crossed. As such, Latitude50 have teamed up with Isles of Scilly Travel to offer an unmissable chance to experience the very best of Cornwall, not to mention a day in paradise on the Isles of Scilly, and you could be in with a chance of winning it all.
But what’s in store for the lucky winner?
Well, a magical week to remember spent in the show-stopping, dog-friendly beach house of Rosevarlock in Polzeath for a start. Boasting four floors of contemporary beachside living, you can enjoy one of the highest vantage points in central Polzeath, cook al fresco on the roof terrace and enjoy a movie marathon in your very own home cinema. After an exhilarating session amongst the white water on your new wooden bellyboards, revel in postsurf indulgences on the roof garden with the finest local tipple and nibbles in hand from your artisan Cornish hamper and the famous Polzeath sunset as your backdrop.
What’s more, on one of the seven days of your holiday, hop onto the Skybus or Scillonian III and find yourself in the Isles of Scilly with three of your friends and family (plus a four-legged friend subject to
availability on Skybus). Once you arrive, you will be whisked away to the magical island of St Martin's by boat provided by the St Mary's Boatmen's Association. You will then head off for a tour of one of the country's most scenic vineyards, the St Martin's Vineyard and Winery where you can delight in their range of delicious organic wines.
A luxurious lunch will be provided by Karma St. Martin's, situated alongside white sands and turquoise waters. Sample the best of the Isles of Scilly with local, seasonal ingredients including fresh fish and crab caught on the doorstep before exploring the island, browsing the independent shops and heading to beaches with powder white sands.
As if all this wasn’t the picture of perfection, the prize also includes two wooden belly boards and a hamper of Cornish goodies, so be sure to head to Instagram or Facebook to enter, because as they say, you’ve got to be in it to win it!

BLISSBeach
Occupying a beautiful beach-side position overlooking St Ives Bay, Beach Pads’ three seaside houses are a sensory paradise. It’s no wonder that the iconic beach-scape artist, John Miller, was drawn to this place, and in fact resided here, making the property his home and studio while capturing famous views like that pictured on Chris Rea’s King of the Beach album cover.
Another famous face and author of books like Shell Seekers and Nancherrow, Rosamunde Pilcher was known to love walking past the houses, as she once explained: “My favourite walk is at Lelant, down the road past the church onto the golf course. You see the bay and the colours, and it’s never the same – it’s just perfect.”
Fantastic facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, two private hot tubs and an entertaining space for the whole group overlooking the ocean inside and outside. Enjoy an evening sitting around a stone fire pit just above the beach. If you prefer there is also space for quiet reflection and privacy away from the crowds. Ferry House and Ferryman’s Rest both enjoy conservatories allowing the outside inside, especially on a sunny winter’s day.
One happy guest shares their Beach Pads experience: "We’ve had a lovely week in this beautiful house in an unbeatable location right on the beach. Nicola was such a helpful
and thoughtful host and we thoroughly enjoyed our time looking out over the most magnificent views and walking the dogs across the sand. Cannot recommend highly enough."
Boasting inescapable sea views, all houses are well equipped, offering open plan living spaces, whilst guests frequently comment on feeling both comfortable and cosy. If you could ever tire of the view there are TVs in the living areas and master bedrooms for curling up and watching a film. Alternatively, a moonlit beach stroll is a highly recommended heavenly experience, with only the sound of the waves to disturb you.
There is plenty for everyone to do with a sandy beach on your doorstep and a great links golf course only meters away. Water lovers can enjoy kayaking, kitesurfing, surf and SUP activities. Sea fishing from your doorstep is a popular pastime. The beach outside is dog friendly all year round and so perfect for doggy guests too. The South West Coast Path makes for a walker's paradise, with St Ives just an amble away. It is remarkable to be so close to nature whilst having all the modern creature comforts you require close at hand.

Find yourself surrounded by perfect countryside with everything you could need at your fingertips, at Maggie’s Place.
Located next to a busy working dairy farm in a rural part of Devon, Maggie’s Place is the perfect property to enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the country. Inside the barn you’ll come across a king-size bedroom with adjacent shower room and an open-plan living area in which you can spread out and relax together. With everything you need for your holiday in the kitchen area, and a TV with an Amazon fire stick, a DVD player and a good choice of films in the living area, what more could you need?
Maggie’s Place is only a short drive from Bradworthy, home to a local friendly pub offering locally sourced, freshly cooked food and local ales, not to mention the farm shop nearby, Lizzies Larder, where you can find great breakfast and dinners, and dogs are welcome!
Maggie’s Place is also just seven miles from the market town of Holsworthy to the south, with its various shops, cafés and restaurants plus Holsworthy Museum, golf club, pottery, archery centre, horse riding stables and main supermarket.
14 miles to the north is the port town of Bideford, and just 13 miles from the Cornish coastal town of Bude. In nearby Cornwall there’s King Arthur’s Tintagel, lovely Boscastle and many other coastal villages – all with aweinspiring scenery. The fantastic South West Coast Path runs through the region’s rugged coastline and is perfect for walkers and view seekers, offering 90 miles of stunning walks.
Most beaches allow dogs during the main season, such as Summerleaze, Sandymouth, Duckpool and North Cott, all with good facilities, while the ports of Port Issac, Port Quinn and Port Gaverne are nice to visit and swim as well as letting your dog have a dip.
The famed Upper and Lower Tamar Lakes are just a 15-minute drive away, or great for a three-mile walk before a spot of lunch in the café, or why not walk and lunch at Roadford Lake? The popular Tarka Trail is one of the country’s longest traffic-free walking and cycling paths and provides the unique opportunity to follow disused railway lines, allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and river scenery. Padstow, Newquay and Dartmoor are an hour away, or for a day to remember why not take a trip across to Lundy Island, home to England’s first statutory Marine Nature Reserve due to its unique flora and fauna?

Where memories
ARE MADE
Established by Sarah and Emma in 2020, The Cornish Holiday Company team understand how important it is to find the right home-from-home in which to reside during your Cornish escape, and their ever-growing collection of enchanting homes promises just that. We’ve found three of their newest properties that invite you to step inside for a summer holiday of making memories.
Nestled in the St Kew hamlet, Pendoggett House is a large and stylish retreat welcoming up to eight guests. With a stunning enclosed garden area and breathtaking sea views, surrounded by Cornish countryside, what could be a better setting to make those everlasting memories? Pendoggett House even has a separate annexe with a king-size bed, kitchen and bathroom, which is also available to let alongside the main residence.
Another fresh addition to the collection is Amble Forge, situated in the idyllic village of Chapel Amble and within a pebble’s throw of the coast. This inviting dwelling offers plenty of bright, open-plan living accommodation, which makes the perfect retreat for family gatherings or spending special time with friends. It’s all on one level
with an adjoining games room hosting up to eight guests, so there’s plenty of fun to be had!
Little Fourways, on the other hand, is a recently refurbished detached property in the heart of St Minver village. With reverse living accommodation, which offers modern features throughout, and an enclosed southfacing courtyard area with barbeque facilities, Little Fourways is great for al-fresco dining, with the addition of an upstairs balcony. What’s more, it’s in a perfect position for nearby surfing beaches and beautiful walking trails.
Although only a small sample of the incredible collection of properties on The Cornish Holiday Company’s books, we hope you’re as inspired as we are to venture forth and make some new memories this summer, in a home-away-from-home to give you everything you need for a perfect Cornish escape.

Meet
This season, Talland Bay Hotel is shining a spotlight on local suppliers with a new ‘Meet the Makers’ break, offering guests the chance to discover the people and stories behind the luxury Cornish coastal retreat. The package has been curated to celebrate some of the best Cornish tipples and to meet the people behind the hotel’s excellently stocked bar. Guests are invited to step inside the doors of two independent drinks suppliers who are carving their own path.
This includes a guided tour of Colwith Farm Distillery at Lostwithiel, Cornwall’s first plough-to-bottle distillery, makers of award-winning spirits and the team behind the hotel’s own blend, Talland Bay No.1 gin. Unlike many craft distilleries, Colwith Farm Distillery forgoes mass-produced base spirit in favour of creating its own from scratch, from potatoes grown on the fifthgeneration family farm. The tour includes walking step by step through the process of preparing, mashing and distilling the potato wine as well as a tutored tasting of the distillery's flagship vodkas and gins.
The break also features a tour of Knightor Winery, set above St Austell Bay. The winery was founded in 2011 and today Head Winemaker, David Brocklehurst and
the team produce the best still and sparkling Cornish wines, along with a selection of vermouths and spritzers, using a relatively hands-off approach at their two coastal vineyards in Portscatho and Seaton. Visitors enjoy a guided tour through the display vines followed by a peek into the winery for a brief introduction to how wine is made, and finally a tasting of four wines. A gourmet stay in Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without a feast, and the package includes a nine-course dining experience with accompanying wines in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, showcasing the best local seasonal fare. The three-night ‘Meet the Makers’ break costs from £605 per person including accommodation and daily breakfast, a nine-course dining experience with matching wines on one night, and guided tours of Colwith Farm Distillery and Knightor Winery (based on two people sharing a room). This special break is available from June through to August, offering the ultimate in indulgence and relaxation.
