egular readers of Cornwall Living will know that we are big fans of interior design. We love nothing more than a beautifully styled interior invoking the wonderful Cornish coast that lies just beyond our front doors. With that in mind, we thought it was about time for a refresh of our own – we hope you love our new ‘interior design’ as much as we all do! Look out for our ‘Editor’s picks’ – a few of our favourite features this month. This time of year, the calendar quickly fills up with an increasingly varied array of events. One that always gets us excited is Open Studios Cornwall, when, as the name suggests, artists across the Duchy let us into their studios to see their work in situ. 2017’s event – from Saturday 27th May until Sunday 4th June – looks set to be better than ever, so we provide a preview of what to expect (page 16). Now is the perfect time for exploring, and where better to do so than the Camel estuary? A beautiful part of north Cornwall, it’s ideal for walking, cycling the famous Camel Trail, enjoying watersports and sampling the delicious food in popular hotspots such as Padstow and Rock. So, we’ve put together a handy guide (page 56) to give you a few ideas of things to do and places to stay. For our restaurant review we visited Gravy Boesti, a small bistro in Truro that packs a big punch (page 80). You’ll also find our Kids Love Cornwall Living magazine inside (page 85), providing lots of inspiration for family excursions, as well as our regular Bookworms reviews, Tasty Treats recipe and a Let’s Create craft activity. Enjoy!

53,000 reasons why Cornwall Hospice Care loves the London Marathon
Sampsons Solicitors
advise on how to avoid the new inheritance tax trap Gemma Sampson from Sampson Solicitors explains how you could now save £140,000 in inheritance tax, due to a recent change in law that benefits your loved ones and not the taxman! Gemma, who specialises in maximising inheritance tax savings, says: “By 2020/21, families could escape tax on up to £1 million of their wealth, but the rules are complex. This means you’ll need detailed legal advice if you’re to take full advantage; mistakes could be costly and your existing will may need updating, so don’t leave it to chance!” She goes on to explain how a will that was tax efficient in the past may now result in you paying thousands more than you need to, which is especially true if it contains certain types of trust provisions. It’s for this reason that Gemma recommends keeping your will under constant review, in order to cater for changing circumstances. Not doing so, Gemma tells us, could mean paying as much as an extra £140,000 in tax! For advice on inheritance tax or for more information, call 01288 353542 or visit www.sampson-solicitors.co.uk
Amidst the swathes of runners pounding the streets of London in this year’s marathon, 23 could be found facing the challenge in support of Cornwall Hospice Care. The team included a nurse and a fundraiser from the Cornish charity, as well as a sports editor, local business people and some with very personal stories of the charity’s work. Fastest of the runners was Matt Ward, who completed the 26.2-mile course in just over three and a half hours. Meanwhile, Leanne Smith received her medal from the Duchess of Cambridge and Lollie Brewer, a nurse at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, raised £4,000 as part of her challenge!
Each inspirational runner faced the daunting task in their own way, but collectively #TeamCHC raised an incredible £53,000. Head of Fundraising for the charity, Oli Hoare tells us: “It’s hard to describe how magnificent our London marathon runners were this year. They were all so determined and they’ve been rewarded with the knowledge that their efforts have resulted in a massive donation towards the care we provide.” For more information visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Tornado warning for Cornwall
Collington and Co
introduce the new Bygone range, where timeless elegance meets modern simplicity For centuries, traditional sliding sash windows have been a feature of period properties, but they can present a number of problems; they can be draughty, high maintenance and tough to clean, with paintwork that’s hard to maintain. Now, however, there’s a solution that enables homeowners to retain the special charm and character, while bypassing many of the previous challenges. Based in Helston, Collington and Co is proud to offer Masterframe’s Bygone Collection, a range of high-end sliding sash windows, perfect for proud owners of period properties.
Bodmin and Wenford Railway is putting the finishing touches to the plans for the upcoming visit by 60163 Tornado from 1st to 4th June. The first and only steam locomotive to be built in Britain this century, this iconic engine recently attracted national media interest when it reached record-breaking speeds of 100mph, and earlier in the year by hauling passenger trains for the Settle and Carlisle re-opening, where the public flocked in their hundreds to be a part of the spectacle. The visit makes history for the engine and railway, marking Tornado’s first visit to Cornwall where it will be the biggest ever steam locomotive to run on the line.
The railway will also be showcasing some of its own heritage engines at the charming 1950s Cornish branch line station, creating a unique opportunity to see the newest and largest British locomotive alongside one of the smallest and one of the oldest. Ticket options include standard travel, first class, bookable family or group compartments and a first class evening dining train. For more information visit www.bodminrailway.co.uk
Budock Vean Hotel dares to evolve Refurbishing a much-loved country house hotel isn’t easy, but the Budock Vean Hotel near the Helford river is doing just fine. Indeed, loyal guests tell us: “we really love what they’ve done to our room!”, so they must be onto a winner!
Specialising in sash windows, Bygone creates authentic reproductions made with modern materials, offering you greater energy efficiency and security. Collington and Co are the south west’s exclusive stockists of this stunning collection, joining the national network of premier partners, a partnership based on quality, honesty and products that are built to last.
Local design firm, 3iDog created a palette of cosy, heathery and earthy colours, so the new wouldn’t scream at the old. It also created a related but more modern look for the hotel’s gorgeous holiday homes, so we recommend requesting a ‘Signature’ room when you book! Not staying? Well, this is a great spot for a day visit, too. Book a spa treatment and have lunch on the terrace, before taking a boat trip from the hotel’s quay. Why not?
Recent customer Mrs C from Helston tells us: “I absolutely love my new windows, they’re just like the real thing!”

The Chelsea Flower Show 2017 Collection includes tote bags, tea towels, aprons, greeting cards and notebooks featuring the work of artist Jess Trotman, which captures the beauty and romance of cottage garden favourites. Whistlefish owner, Lyn Thompson tells us: “Our limited edition collection for this year’s show is absolutely gorgeous. We’re delighted to have worked with Jess on the range – she’s such a talented floral artist. I hope the collection proves just as popular with flower enthusiasts, both online and at the show. The show is a highlight of our calendar, and I can’t think of a better way to mark our tenth appearance.”

SPS Architectural offers a clientfocussed service While thatched roofs, lattice windows and names carved into slate with laborious care will always rate highly when it comes to properties we’d love to own, there’s much more to be said about the art of architectural design; about sleek lines, the innovative use of wood and stone, and enough windows to fill a home with natural Cornish light. With 25 years of experience, SPS Architectural boasts designs that artfully intertwine the contemporary with the traditional; designs that fuse immaculately with the stunning surroundings that Cornwall has to offer.
The team also believes firmly in keeping every aspect of a project completely client focussed, keeping you involved from the drawing board, right through to the finishing touches. So, with the warmer months upon us, isn’t it time you started to do something about that architectural itch you’ve yet to scratch? For more information, email enquiries@spsarchitectural.co.uk or visit www.spsarchitectural.co.uk
Immerse yourself at Poldark Mine Cornwall is lucky enough to boast a rich past and a visit to Poldark Mine gives you the opportunity to step into our mining heritage. Poldark Mine is Cornwall’s only complete underground tin mine and is exceptionally well-preserved. Tours take you down into the labyrinths and caverns and out into the open-air exhibits and offer you the chance to marvel at this once booming industry.
Bloomtown
brings eco-luxuries to Eden Project’s palm oil-free staple Having recently scooped three prestigious, international Beauty Shortlist Awards for its innovative range of eco-friendly body and skincare, Bloomtown is really living up to its reputation as one the UK’s hottest new beauty brands. Bloomtown’s ethos – which grounds itself firmly in 100% palm oil-free and truly cruelty-free eco-luxuries – goes a long way to explaining its success on national gift platforms such as Moonpig.com and Not On the High Street. What’s more, the team donates 10% of its profits to environmental and animal rescue charities, so it’ll come as no surprise that the Eden Project has asked the company to join forces, stocking the Bloomtown range in its onsite gift store.
The mine is set within four acres of beautiful riverside woodland and gardens on the River Cober valley, and was used for underground filming for the BBC’s Poldark series in 2014. Today, Poldark Mine is arguably one of the most unique wedding venues.
That’s right – you can now find Bloomtown in Cornwall’s number one tourist destination, with Eden’s full range of eco-friendly and palm oil-free products.

Aspen & Ash heads to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show The team at Aspen and Ash, Cornwall’s engineered wooden flooring experts, take their exclusive flooring to London this month at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The long-established joinery company has crafted bespoke pieces for the Tregothnan and Wardian stand as Aspen and Ash is the sole supplier of Tregothnan Oak and Olive Ash flooring, which will create the plant-lined walkway through the stand.
Made from sustainable Tregothnan Oak, the luxurious walkway will be laced with Cornish tin – the first time this technique in flooring has been presented. Aspen and Ash also designed the shelves, units and Olive Ash worktops to enhance the Tregothnan presence. The Tregothnan stand will also feature the UK’s only homegrown tea as well as a replica of the last surviving Wardian case, which was discovered at the estate. that has coordinated the popular initiative for the past 13 years. “From the figurative to the abstract, the subtle to the subversive and the observed to the imagined, step into the secret world of the studio, create your individual art trail around Cornwall and be inspired by the vast array of work on show wherever you live in the county,” adds Jane. It is not just about experiencing interesting work in curious spaces and beautiful places, however. It is also about exploring Cornwall’s magical landscape from a different perspective, purchasing original pieces of affordable art and discovering the personal stories that inform such artistic endeavours.
Maggie O’ Brien, West Penwith
Maggie O’Brien exemplifies the artist as storyteller, inspired by her unique setting and growing sense of unease in a troubled world. Nestling above St Loy Cove between Lamorna and Porthcurno, on the site of a medieval settlement, the converted barn in which Maggie works is infused with the quality of light that is epitomised by this remote place and has inspired generations of artists before her. The evocative landscapes that Maggie creates combine the elemental effects of weather, light and the changing seasons with memory and imagination to reflect the deep connection she feels with her environment.

“The wooded valleys, sheltered coves and gentler weather of the south coast of West Penwith encourage an abundance of wildlife, which has crept into my work. It is informed by the ancient cycles of life on the farm, by the birds that nest in the barns and trees, and by the creatures that inhabit the woods and fields. A lifelong love of animals has become something deeper and richer, with a new sense of the mysterious connectedness of things in this remote part of Cornwall,” explains Maggie. But there are harsher truths too. With this powerful sense of connection comes a growing sense of unease about our relationship with those creatures and our

‘Sunrise on the Harbour’ and bespoke jewellery by Artisan Cornwall (Steve Payter)
www.maggieobrien.co.uk
Originally from Lostwithiel, Amy studied Fine Art at Falmouth University. In 2008, she won the Midas Award, which helps emerging artists to enter the professional contemporary art world. Her prize included a year’s free studio space at Redruth’s creative hub, Krowji (where she is now based) and a solo show at the Newlyn Art Gallery. Amy has exhibited nationally ever since. Recent commissions include four large-scale paintings for P&O’s latest ship, Britannia. Visitors to Amy’s studio will gain real insight into her unique use of oils as she builds them up to create watercolour-like layers by viewing her sketch books, work-in-progress and abstract landscapes inspired by a recent trip to Iceland.

Artisan Cornwall (Steve Payter), St Levan, Penzance
As a photographer, Steve’s stock in trade is light and the light in West Penwith is truly magical. The sky sometimes seems so immense that even his widest angle lens can’t capture its magnitude. The ever shifting colour of the sea from deep reflective blue to shimmering turquoise and cyan green conjures an endless palette to explore. Such tonal hues together with the texture of the granite cliffs and the vibrancy of the sun at dawn and dusk are also reflected in the jewellery he creates. “When I moved here, photography was my life and creating jewellery had been an embryonic thought. It is a testament to Cornwall’s inspirational powers that I now find myself doing both and really loving it.”

responsibility towards them. Maggie’s current exhibition at The Summerhouse Gallery in Marazion – ‘Where Have All The Songbirds Gone’ – addresses the decline of birds and wildflowers as well as the devastating consequence of a world without the dawn chorus. Where there is outstanding natural beauty, there is always a flipside and a parallel strand of Maggie’s creativity tackles the big issues of the day from the pollution of our seas to the plight of immigrants. For ‘100 days in Winter 2006’, for example, Maggie gathered the flotsam and jetsam of marine debris from the same patch of beach at Priest’s Cove below Cape Cornwall. On each of those days, she selected one object to draw on a page of Iris Murdoch’s, The Sea, The Sea – a novel that tells the story of a man who retires to end his days at one with nature only to realise that wherever you go, you take your demons with you and that nature can be unpredictable. These drawings subsequently formed part of an installation entitled ‘Drift Plastic’ at The Exchange in Penzance. This summer, Maggie will be the lead artist in ‘Humanity in Crisis’, a show that is being staged on Tresco to coincide with a Red Cross conference there. This reinvigorates work that she created in response to the asylum seekers of the 1990s when living in London and reflects that 20 years on, only the people have changed, not the desperate situations they find themselves in. The counterpoint of serenity and bluster that characterises Maggie’s stretch of coastline aptly mirrors the contrast between her lyrical landscapes and issue-based pieces but all are borne from a love of Cornwall, the natural environment and our collective responsibility to make the world a better place. “Open Studios Cornwall is a unique opportunity for us to open our eyes, challenge our pre-conceptions and marvel at the world around us,” concludes Maggie. “We look forward to welcoming you to our unique corner of Cornwall and to our particular slice of life.”

Karen Smith is Artist-in-Residence at St Clement Church near Truro and her studio is steeped in history. Built in the mid-13th century, there is evidence to suggest that it was a coastal fort in the Iron Age or Roman times. It is also believed that King Mark, Tristan and Iseult lived in its vicinity. Karen’s studio is The Lychgate, one of only three such slate-faced buildings in Cornwall. It has been the Parish Vestry Room, where rates were made and poor relief was granted, as well as the village and Sunday school. It therefore makes for an unusual exhibition space.

At Art School, drawing was Francesca Vincent’s first love, but marriage and children placed creativity on hold. When her dad was diagnosed with clinical depression, Francesca asked her mum to teach her to use a sewing machine to give her another focus. Riffling through the fabrics that mum had squirrelled away and starting with simple bags, Francesca’s love of textiles began. Using free machine stitch in combination with dyed cotton and textiles, she now utilises her love of drawing, colour and texture to create unique artwork and crafts. “My dad’s life debilitating condition has given me a life on the path I always hoped for and the confidence to push myself in my work. Future projects are now an achievable reality, not a distant dream.”

estled amidst 25 acres of farmland in midwest Cornwall sits this beautiful farmhouse, full of character and potential. The main farmhouse has been extensively restored and manages to combine spacious living with a cosy and welcoming atmosphere throughout. Walking through the house you will notice the wonderful use of English oak, slated flagged stone flooring and high-quality fittings, all of which add to the character and style of the home. Indeed, the spacious conservatory with its slate floor is absolutely stunning and provides a stylish yet comfortable place to while away a summer’s day. Many of the rooms feature exposed beams, granite and stone, which continue to provide a classic look to the space. While you can, of course, continue with the traditional theme, incorporating a modern style and décor would create an incredible juxtaposition and a truly special home. Set within 25 acres of highgrade pastureland and with two barns, a garage/ workshop, four stables, two garages and a second form of complete accommodation, this property provides endless possibilities for development. While the property itself provides wonderful views and the lovely revitalising feeling of a rural retreat, the surrounding area offers equally tempting features. The farm is within close proximity to all of the amenities of Leedstown and Praze while boasting easy access to the incredible north and south coast, both of which provide amazing coastal walks and long, sandy beaches.

A
t the end of its own lane and surrounded by its own grounds; Streets Farm feels remote and miles from anywhere, something that many can but dream of in a world full of noise. Charming and peaceful, this Grade II Listed stone farmhouse is one of a rare few farmsteads that have neither been split nor had the farm buildings converted. Rather, the potential is there for you to realise. It’s rare these days, with an ever-increasing rate of urbanisation, that you’ll find a property that’s so true to the word ‘unspoilt’ and so well suited to those seeking peace and quiet, so how does having your own, untouched piece of Cornwall to play with sound? The whole property extends to around 30 acres and the house itself sits perfectly within a ringed fence with the land split conveniently into seven fields, each enclosed within natural hedge boundaries. You can also expect fine, coastal views from the land, as well as sea glimpses from both floors at the rear of the house. At the heart of its own land, well away from neighbouring properties and just inland from the south Cornish coast, the house has five bedrooms (two en suite) as well as a kitchen and breakfast room
complete with its own Aga. This really comes into its own in the winter, as you get a feel for cooler Cornish evenings spent getting cosy in a house that’s heated in such a traditional fashion. And while, admittedly, there’s a great temptation to simply never leave, when you do need to pop out, you’ll find yourself surprisingly well serviced with local amenities, attractions and schools. St Austell and the Eden Project are just seven miles to the east and Truro is only double that, with its high street names, fantastic restaurants and the Hall for Cornwall, which is perfect for a family evening of ‘boos and hisses’, or a romantic evening spent soaking up some culture. So get in touch with the Philip Martin team and arrange your viewing. It’s safe to say we’d all like to know what it’s like to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Ideal for families and couples alike, the living space enjoys a large, farmhouse kitchen and dining room, which is great for lively gatherings as well as chilled evenings spent chewing the fat over a bottle of wine. And, if getting cosy’s your thing, the sitting room is perfect for curling up around the fire, especially on those cooler, wintry evenings. Outside, the extensive lawned garden is tidy yet lush with varied shades of green. Vegetable patches and a poly-tunnel provide ample space for growing your own produce, while longstanding trees, a shed half-hidden in artfully well-kempt foliage, as well as a secret-garden-esque archway at the rear, make this space a pleasure in which to spend a summer’s afternoon. Within easy reach of the A30 and the north coast, you’re well set here to make the most of this ruggedly beautiful part of Cornwall, including the produce of the famous Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, just down the road! ountryside views, four bedrooms, private parking and a character that oozes history; all of this combined with a beautifully converted interior, which has been paid meticulous attention to detail, make The Old Chapel a wonderful family residence. Upon visiting, as you walk up the path through the ornamental, walled front garden, no clues are given as to the modern conversion that’s transformed the inside. You’d certainly be surprised to learn that the property’s power is serviced by its own solar panels! Indeed, on the outside, it still feels like the old, local chapel it once was and this, I think, is a wonderful part of its charm. Head inside and the dining room offers a middle ground between the kitchen and lounge, allowing for a harmoniously unbroken style of living. Two large arch windows continue to resonate the property’s history, filling the space with natural light. Through to the kitchen and you’ll find that this space, too, makes the most of the Cornish sun. Well fitted, with granite worktops and a breakfast bar, this room is a social hub, offering your guests the space to sit while you demonstrate what it means to be the ‘host with the most’. Why not employ some of that foodie flair you’ve been dying to show off?
On evenings when it’s just you and the family, adjourn to the lounge and get cosy by the wood burner. This space really comes into its own on wintry evenings, as the Atlantic gales howl mercilessly outside and you settle down with a film. Of course, as the winds of winter subside and dark evenings give way to light, you’ll want to make the most of the balmy summer weather. Complete with three sheds – each with power and one that has a water connection (great for doing the laundry!) – the large garden is both beautiful and functional. Why not pour yourself a glass of something chilled, get the grill going and drink in the stunning views of the countryside? If you’re looking for a family residence that’s comfortable, spacious and in command of breathtaking views, not to mention in close proximity to one of the UK’s most highly sought after coastal towns, get in touch with Abode Property Agents and see The Old Chapel for yourself.

BEAUTIFULLY practical The classic issue of space versus possessions can be solved with some creative thinking and bespoke storage solutions.
WORDS BY
Annie Cowen
W
hether you live a minimalist lifestyle with just the essentials or you love filling your home with knickknacks and much-loved personal possessions, storage is always key to keeping your home looking its best. Of course, it’s not always as simple as popping some ornaments on a shelf or keeping a few kitchen sundries in a cupboard or drawer. Sometimes we need a little bit more from our storage. For those who like their storage to be as striking as the decorations themselves, a bespoke room divider that doubles as a beautiful and eye-catching display might be the way forward. This creative solution offers the multipurpose use of breaking up a room while providing a fabulous way to display your prized possessions such as books, vases or family photos. With properties coming in all shapes and sizes it might be the case that you have more possessions than space. Luckily, there are many clever ways to utilise any space you have spare. Turn an alcove into a custom-made display, make the most of the space under your stairs or turn a window alcove into a handy window seat with built in storage. Indeed, all it takes is some creative thinking and you can easily make the most of the space at hand. Of course, we also have items that we might use everyday but don’t necessarily want on constant display. Flatscreen TVs are household favourites but it can be risky keeping them on a stand when there are children or dogs running around. Keep yours safe and sound by dropping it down into a piece of furniture, such as a sideboard in the lounge or an ottoman in the bedroom. This innovative furniture design is ideal for those who enjoy clean lines and a clutterless room.
Continuing the seemingly invisible minimalist look, floor-to-ceiling cupboards are ideal for keeping things neat. You don’t even need to have handles on the doors if you use a push opening system. Your storage space becomes virtually invisible while keeping that beautiful contemporary look with your possessions accessible yet hidden from view. This principle can also be applied to your home office with an office space that can be opened up and folded away as desired. And when created in a tailor-made design to suit your home’s style, the seamless transition from home to office will make working a breeze. It isn’t just modern designs and ideas that help transform our lives. A few tips and tricks from the past help add ease of living. If you are lucky enough to have some space in your kitchen but you’re unsure how to make the most of it then try a walk-in larder. While this might be a seemingly vintage idea it’s a welcome resurgence and adds a useful way to store food and ingredients. Of course, many of these solutions work best with a custom-made design that is tailored to your individual needs. Rozen, a fabulous bespoke furniture workshop in Ruan Minor, boasts a brilliant team of craftspeople who are on-hand to help you find the perfect piece of furniture for your home. With one-off pieces and built-in projects available, no commission is too small or too specific. So give Ian Cox at Rozen a call to discuss your display or storage plans and see how dramatically your space can be transformed.

W
ABOVE ì RIGHT è BELOW î Stylish and practical, custom made shutters from Shuttercraft can fit into unusally shaped windows, equally at home in a traditional or modern setting
hile curtains have acted as a faithful and often beautiful companion to our windows, Cornwall is seeing a rise in demand for shutters. Of course, it isn’t difficult to see why people are opting for this classic solution. Not only do shutters add to your home’s kerb appeal with their elegant and classic look, they also bring numerous benefits including light and privacy control, thermal and sound insulation, ease of maintenance and an added level of security to your home. In response, national business Shuttercraft has opened its latest location in sunny Cornwall with local specialists Paula and Alan Hibbens taking up the helm as owners and directors. This means that, although a part of the national network, Shuttercraft Cornwall is an independently owned and operated family business. Based in Newquay, Shuttercraft now offers a range of made-to-measure shutters in a variety of materials and styles. The shutters are custom made and measured, fitting perfectly in any window shape, including in older houses where the floor and wall levels may have shifted over the years. These shutters also fit any style, looking fantastic in period homes, converted factory apartments, modern new builds, barn conversions and even contemporary business suites. Paula explains: “Shutters are really versatile, as well as offering practicality, they can transform a room allowing the light flow to be adjusted during the day and with the changing seasons. Shuttercraft’s leading brand of premium plantation shutters are beautifully designed, and when combined with professional installation, it’s easy to see why they are so popular.” Indeed, the ever-popular full height shutters provide maximum control over light and privacy levels while café styles bring a dash of French chic. Shutters are even an excellent solution for feature windows of all shapes and sizes from arched and angled to circles and octagons. The timeless styles and enviable flexibility are reason enough to update your home with some fabulous new shutters.

f course, with so much to choose from we had no idea which collections or pieces to tell you about so we reached out to the people in the know. The team over at Julian Foye, one of Cornwall’s top furnishing retailers and stockists of ercol, were more than happy to shed some light and have come back to us with one of their favourite ranges, which acts as the perfect introduction to ercol. The Originals is a range of timeless classics designed by the company’s founder Lucian Ercolani during the 1950s and 1960s. Lucian founded ercol in 1920 in the heartland of English furniture making, intent on designing and producing beautiful and honest furniture. Indeed, the enduring designs are still as relevant today as they were when they first went into production, keeping contemporary through the addition of new colours and timbers.

The first piece deserving of our time is the studio couch. An iconic design from the late 1950s, it was originally created for dual function as both a large sofa and an occasional single bed. Made of beech and elm, with distinctive steam bent arms, this is a timeless piece of furniture that will work with any theme as it comes in a wide choice of fabrics, wood finishes and colours. First launched in 1958, the butterfly chair is still a breath of fresh air today. With its distinctive curved bent plies, reminiscent of the profile of a butterfly’s wings, the butterfly chair is one of ercol’s most iconic designs and goes wonderfully with the plank table. The butterfly chair boasts voluptuous curves that create an intrinsically eyecatching chair. The inherent springiness in the bent plies of the seat at the back and the sculpted recessed shape, as well as the moulded wing shaped back, make this chair very comfortable indeed! The pinnacle of Windsor chair making, the chairmaker’s chair is a demonstration of the team at ercol’s enviable skills. All aspects of this beautiful chair, such as curved, arched back and the four spindles separated by a double bow, work together to make a supportive and comfortable chair, all while maintaining a timeless and stunning design. The chair is available in your choice
of lacquer finish, both of which protect the timber while allowing the beauty of the natural grain to show through. Of course, you can always choose one of the fabulous paint finishes to give your room a pop of colour! As a progression of the Windsor chair, the love seat offers a large, outward shaped elm seat, moulded for comfort. The bent beech chair bow is an attractive and unique shape, reminiscent of its Windsor heritage while the turned lists that structure the back and tapered legs give this piece a distinctive ercol feel. Coupled with the plank table or used as a standalone piece, this unique love seat will be the focus of any living space. The Cosenza range of stylish upholstery with its retro undertones is the perfect accompaniment to the Originals collection. Deep buttoning in the back cushions creates a beautiful style and unbeatable comfort. And, if you look closely, you will see the ercol standard of show wood oak legs in the under frame.

Made to last
Wind is a constant aspect of Cornish life so we’ve been on the lookout for ways to contend with our beautiful but breezy county.
C
ornwall is known for many things; we have an incredible coastline, beautiful countryside and, when the weather is good, beautifully clear and fresh air! Of course, these factors aren’t without their downsides. Our fantastic westerly aspect, when combined with our naturally windy county, means we are often the first port of call for Atlantic wind and rain. While we might shrug off these occasional windy days, our gardens are not so hardy. Just take a look at your wooden garden fence and consider the struggles it must go through. Wind and rain are an unfortunate enemy of our dutiful garden fences. The rain slowly washes away the often water-based paint, dampness eventually leads to rot where the wood comes in contact with the ground and wind acts as a constant bully trying, and eventually succeeding, to push your fence to the ground. Of course, these problematic fences mean we spend our beautiful summer days buying replacement fences, painting them and then erecting them so that we can have our most valued privacy. We sympathise greatly with this common plight, as we understand that people want to be out in their garden with an ice cold drink in hand, not a paintbrush or a hammer. Luckily, the good people at Tintagelbased Colourfence Cornwall have found an innovative solution to our fencing needs. Colourfence is a new fencing system made from pre-painted Colourbond steel, one of the most advanced steel products in the world. It’s guaranteed not to rust, warp or peel for 25 years and can withstand winds up to 130mph, giving you peace of mind and more time to enjoy your garden!
Olly Dalglish, Director of Colourfence Cornwall, has been operating the Colourfence franchise for over three years now and has noticed a real difference in the market. “We’re noticing a real shift in people’s attitudes towards a more low-maintenance future,” he begins. “Our fences need no costly maintenance and are more of a ‘fit and forget’ solution for fencing. We’ve installed over 200 fences across the region at properties of all shapes and sizes, and in the medium-to-long term, a Colourfence will save you money and time over any wooden fence.” Made with Cornwall’s buffeting gales in mind, Colourfence combines sturdy and long-lasting attributes with a beautiful range of colours to ensure your garden is protected with style and ease.

SUMMER HOME We take a look at the fantastic range of heating available from Rointe.
C
ornwall has been lucky enough to have a few sunny days recently but unfortunately that doesn’t mean we feel the heat everywhere we go. Indeed, when there is a granite wall between you and glorious sunshine you won’t be sitting in flip-flops and a sundress! Of course, this doesn’t mean you are doomed to sit in chilly rooms until the summer heats up enough to warm our Cornish homes. The installation of an efficient heating system ensures stable and soft warmth for your home or business, giving the ambience of a summer’s day. Research has shown that the ideal temperature for a home should be 21°C, as this offers an ideal comfort with the added benefits of lower consumption costs. Heating expert Rointe is in agreement with this comfortable temperature and has strived to ensure this temperature is maintained while taking careful consideration of various other parameters such as ensuring heat is delivered without hot or cold draughts, a stable temperature with minimum fluctuations and making sure moisture in the air stays at a healthy and comfortable level.
With all of these aspects in mind, Rointe designed a range of radiators and towel rails that are specifically designed to maintain absolute comfort and wellbeing while also offering savings on electricity through energy efficiency. The range of products also comes with complete control, one of the reasons that Rointe is becoming one of the UK’s favourite heating brands. You can control your heating anytime and from anywhere with Rointe’s connect app, which can be easily accessed by any smartphone, tablet or PC. Program your heating to activate only when you need it, whether for your home, office or business, all controlled from one location. Why waste money heating your home when you aren’t there? The app also shows you real-time statistics such as the daily, monthly, and annual usage as well as how much you’re saving. This delivers a control of your heating like never before. So, bring the summer into your home even when it doesn’t feel like it outside and take a look at these fantastic and controllable heating systems.

ummer is almost here, which means our weekends will be spent relaxing in our gardens, our mornings spent enjoying that first sip of coffee on the patio before work and our evenings indulging in some al fresco dining to make sure we are soaking up as much sun as we possibly can! With these balmy summer days in mind we’ve decided to look around to see if we can find those garden additions that turn your outdoor area into your everyday living space. A browse at Patio Furniture, a familyrun business located in the Rustic House showroom in Par, will show you an extensive collection of teak garden furniture that immediately feels as though it’s beckoning you outside! The collection features an array of teak benches, tables, chairs, luxury sun loungers and steamers, all of which add a touch of style to your garden. Indeed, with the range of colourful parasols and cushions you can add a splash of colour to your garden so that even on a cloudy day you can look outside and see something vibrant and joyful. Teak is exceptionally hard wearing and is sure to provide you with many years of enjoyment, no matter how the Cornish elements decide to test it! Left untreated, the teak will weather to a beautiful soft grey, but for those who prefer to maintain the wood’s original golden honey colour, just follow our top tips!
The first tip is one we are all familiar with: read the instructions carefully! The instructions on the treatment are thorough and will ensure your furniture stays looking its absolute best. Secondly, make sure that the wood is clean and dry before application. However, if you’re treating old furniture it’s always best to sand it down first to ensure the surface is smooth and free from paint, varnish or grease. Next, ensure you work the treatment into all the corners and joints. And finally, add two coats for good measure! So, armed with these essential tips, you can browse the Patio Furniture collection with the comforting thought that this outdoor furniture will look good in your garden no matter the weather in Cornwall!

THE GREAT OUTDOORS We discover how local company Anevay is helping get more people outside in the fresh Cornish air.

ornish wood burner company Anevay has recently undertaken a project with the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) to provide woodburning stoves for 20 bell tents spread over nine YHA sites. The Fintan stoves fit the bill perfectly. CEapproved and DEFRA exempted for burning in smoke-free zones like London, the Fintan is designed to keep small spaces cosy. Inspired by the idea of bringing the outdoors inside, Anevay designed this range of stoves to share the sense of adventure that comes from lighting fires and cooking in the woods with a wider audience. The five stoves in the range do just this. From the lightweight Horizon stove, a portable smokeless rocket stove that you can stow in the boot of the car or take with you on a sailing trip ready to jump out at the nearest beach for a quick dinner, to the Fintan stove, perfect for keeping a garden office or a man cave nice and toasty. Who doesn’t feel a little thrill every time they light a fire, bring it life and cook on it? Many of the Anevay team have been guests of the YHA’s accommodation before while adventuring in the UK, so they were thrilled
to be working with them on this project. Holly Carberry from Anevay says: “We’re all about encouraging people to spend time outdoors; time spent in the woods is time well spent in our book! We love what YHA are doing and were happy to work with them every step of the way to make sure the process was seamless.” Indeed, at the top of Anevay’s mission statement is the idea of encouraging everyone to get outdoors more, whether it’s an afternoon in the back garden or a week in the woods. With this in mind, these stoves are designed to be easy to use for anyone, including kids! Anevay works with lots of forestry schools and outdoor education centres that aim to get kids out in the wild, exploring and taking risks safely. If you are interested in spending a little more time outside then take a look at Avevay’s website as there is a host of outdoor tips along with the full range of fabulous stoves.

From anti-steam to surveillance, Cornwall Glass specialises in making bespoke mirrors to reflect your requirements.

F
rom reflections in still pools of water, to polished metals and volcanic glass, mirrors have become part of our every day lives, whether we’re brushing our hair, doing our make up or checking the progress of our most recent gym campaign. What’s more, coming in all shapes and sizes, they’ve long adorned the walls of our homes, reflecting light and giving the illusion of space. Nowadays, mirrors can easily be produced to look vintage, coloured or decorative. What’s more, they can even be embellished or sandblasted with designs and patterns to create a product that, somehow, seems so much more than just a mirror. Perhaps the grandest example of wellknown mirror glass is the Mirror Gallery in the Palace of Versailles, with some 350 enormous floor-to-ceiling mirrors reflecting the exquisite palace gardens. While Cornwall Glass is able to provide this scale of mirror, the team can also produce bespoke mirror designs in silver, blue, pink, gold and green, and even vintage mirror glass to whatever size and shape you require. Using Computer Numerical Control machines, they can take any design, convert it and cut into the glass, meaning you can add one of these stunning, custom
creations to any part of your home. It’s not all vanity, though. Mirrors are often found in dance studios and gyms. They can provide support in visual, creative and learning environments and are great for technique training in dance and gym settings. They’re an ideal addition for any home gym too, giving the illusion of space and light while adding an element of visual critique to aid with technical performance. And it doesn’t stop there; mirrors can be fitted with anti-mist heat pads for use in bathrooms; two-way security mirrors and curved mirrors are often used for surveillance, and garden mirrors, which are becoming increasingly popular, help add interest and depth to your outside space. Cornwall Glass’ extensive range of framed contemporary, Art Deco, vintage and modern mirrors can be viewed at their Truro and Exeter branches, where you’ll discover a team on hand that’s happy to help find the best solution for you. So why not pop in and see for yourself how you can transform any space?

hen we meet Julie, to get the lowdown on the new range of e-bikes from Scott, she tells us: “Being a complete cycling newbie and of an age when the words Facetime and Instagram virtually induce a coma, you can imagine what went through my mind when someone had the idea of me taking a ride around the Cornish coast on an e-bike, complete with all the new techno gadgetry – I nearly fainted! “However, after two to three minutes with the helpful Triathlon Store team, I began to feel at one with this incredible form of pedal power. While e-bikes aren’t a new concept, the latest ones from Scott are a pleasure and really simple to use. They use power units from Bosch or Brose, so you know they’re top quality!” How does it work? “A quick press of a button, but electric cycle power is not a complete let off – you do have to put in some effort, but the electric motor assists you when you want it and the harder you pedal, the harder it works for you.” What was the best part of the trip? “Taking to the hilly Cornish coast roads on two wheels with 50-plus year old leg power is a daunting task, but what a joy electric pedal power is! The ability to reach numerous high points and savour breathtaking views really
made it a trip to remember. “The route, which included the Hayle estuary, St Erth, Carbis Bay, Tregenna Castle and St Ives for lunch, before following the coast to Zennor and crossing the moors to Marazion, was simply spectacular. “I loved exploring the less-travelled open roads; stopping off at various eateries and discovering new photo opportunities. This has got to be one of the best ways to get around and take in the sights of Cornwall!” So, how did the bike measure up to the challenge? “Very well, although after 34miles I was flagging, but the bike still had 20 miles of range left, so I selected the turbo power option which gave a gleeful boost, right at the end of the journey. Honestly, you can’t fail to grin from ear to ear after you’ve used one of these machines!” So, if you’re keen to experience the majesty of Cornwall from the seat of one of these incredible e-bikes, but you’d like to try before you buy, be sure to get in touch with Triathlon Store, Hayle and book your demo trip.

It is well established amongst locals and visitors alike that one of the best ways to see the Camel estuary is by foot or by bike. One of the most popular routes is the aptly named Camel Trail. This route, which utilises the tracks of a disused railway, follows the waters of the estuary closely, making it perfect for enjoying the beautiful scenes. While the South West Coast Path follows the River Camel from Pentire Point to Rock and then from Padstow to Stepper Point, there is also an established route that many literary enthusiasts will enjoy. The Sir John Betjeman Walk is a gentle stroll covering the area where Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, lived towards the end of his life. You can even visit St Enodoc Church where he is buried.
ON THE WATER Whether you are a water baby through and through or someone who likes to bob along without getting wet, the river Camel presents the ultimate opportunity to push the boat out. While Rock is famed for its variety of watersports and sailing, the entire area provides plenty of opportunities for aquatic fun. Waterskiing and wakeboarding provide an adrenaline-fuelled blast while kayaking and paddle boarding offer the chance to glide atop the turquoise waters and bask in the serenity of your surroundings. Sailing then provides the ultimate escape, as with only the water beneath and the sky above, you can truly get away from the quirks of daily life.
NATURE The calm atmosphere, large areas of salt marshes and the inter-tidal reefs make this lush estuary ideal for wildlife. Ornithologists will enjoy the plethora of birds that can be spotted throughout this bounteous area, such as waders, mute swans, peregrine falcons, the occasional migrant osprey, teal, little egrets and kingfishers. Within the waters, you can spot flounders, salmon, sea trout and the occasional basking shark or bottlenose dolphin at the mouth of the estuary. The estuary is also a conservation area for sea bass, otters and bullheads so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. While there are some hides you can use to watch the wildlife from, the estuary is lucky enough to boast fantastic views and wildlife spots throughout its winding path.

PLACES TO VISIT If your time in this stunning section of Cornwall is limited there are a few spots you should definitely set aside time to see. The picturesque harbourside village of Padstow is a complete delight in every way. The harbour provides lovely views while the village itself is considered one of Cornwall’s top foodie destinations, with restaurants serving fish fresh from the area. Take the ferry over to Rock and you can enjoy the impressive expanse of sand the town is known for. Daymer Bay is another stunning beach in the area, boasting superb views across the estuary. The Camel estuary is also known for its golf courses, from Trevose to St Enodoc, boasting views that are so breathtaking you’ll forget about the ball mid-swing. Using only Cornish strawberries, Boddington's jam and local Trewithen Dairy clotted cream, cream teas here are always served on vintage China. These pair delightfully with loose-leaf tea, which is sourced from Tregothnan estate, the home of the first England-grown tea.
Having found a new home overlooking the Camel estuary, this year’s Rock Oyster Festival is set to go off with a bang and the best part is, it’s now easily accessible by foot or bike, thanks to the nearby Camel Trail. To encourage this eco-friendly option, the organisers are promoting to donate £1 to a local charity for each bike ridden to the event.
On a hot day, the in-house range of milkshakes makes a fantastic alternative to ice cream and, even if you’re gluten free, you’ll find that lunch at The Old Tea House always hits the spot. So, if you’re out and about in Wadebridge and looking for a cosy spot to recharge, pop into The Old Tea House. The team will even keep the kids busy with colouring books while you take a load off, afternoon-tea style!
So what can you expect? Taking place on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th July, there’s a full programme of fantastic family entertainment planned, as well as a line up of non-stop music, including Electric Swing Circus and its hugely-popular fusion of ‘20s swing and electro beats.

A place by the sea WORDS BY

We’ve found a way for you to get your Cornish holiday fix without having to worry about the bookings!
P
eople who love Cornwall but don’t live here often get their fill of our beautiful coastline by either buying a second home here or by coming down for a holiday. But what if you wanted the best of both worlds? What if you wanted the experience and atmosphere of a holiday but with the freedom of coming whenever you wanted and without having to worry about availability? Well, have you considered a caravan by the sea? No? Let me paint you a picture! You wake up in your caravan with all the comforts of home around you before going for an early morning walk on the stretching golden beach. Watch as the dog runs excitedly in and out of the rolling waves and the children surround themselves with sandcastles galore! You can then return to the fabulous park and enjoy the fantastic amenities on offer such as an indoor and outdoor pool, amazing eateries and on site fun – it really is the perfect blend of soothing nature and unbeatable activities. Perran Sands is a top example of a haven for all. Indeed, the community feeling felt amongst the owners is a huge draw, with owners’ events and parties such as wine clubs and a summer ball acting as a brilliant way to get to know your holiday neighbours! In fact, we discovered a little known secret: Perran Sands holds monthly activities for owners that can range from abseiling at
Lusty Glaze cove in Newquay, to canoeing at Golant near Fowey, horse riding on the beach and bushcraft for the young ones. And if this isn’t enough then you can enjoy target shooting, archery, aqua jets, aqua gliders, a roller disco rink, a gym, paddle boarding and a surf school on site! Of course, this might all sound terribly tempting but what are you supposed to do with your lovely luxury caravan for the months of the year when you’re not enjoying it? Luckily, the clever team at Perran Sands have thought of a cunning plan! When you aren’t in your holiday home Perran Sands will let it out to other visitors looking to enjoy the sun and sand. Not only does this mean your caravan will feel loved all year round but you will also receive an income to help offset the costs of your piece of paradise!

While away countless hours just looking out of the window at Men and Mor
We explore some beautiful stays in St Ives, Manaccan and Polzeath. Men and Mor, St Ives St Ives remains one of our favourite Cornish holiday destinations. With cobbled streets lined with boutique shops and galleries, fantastic restaurants and cafés overlooking
the harbour and colourful fishing boats bobbing in azure waters, it’s a location that never ceases to amaze. Staying at Men and Mor you can enjoy uninterrupted views of this characterful harbourside town, which are breathtaking at any time of year. The cottage, which sleeps up to eight guests, has been lovingly renovated and tastefully modernised, leaving a beautiful space in which to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The cottage is ideally situated between St Ives’ picturesque centre and the stunning, golden beach of Porthminster. You can spend your days lounging on the near-white sands of the local beaches, bathing in the crystal clear waters or exploring all of the nooks St Ives is hiding. Overlooking Porthmeor beach is the incredible Tate St Ives, an iconic art gallery with an ever-changing array of exhibits as well as constant collections. So whether it’s culture, beach-life or browsing you are after, this is the perfect place to be. But the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. By night St Ives comes alive with seafood restaurants and open fronted bars. The surrounding area is certainly worth a visit as well, with the delights of west Penwith and Land’s End close at hand.

hen we look at a watch, what do we see? Obviously with any half decent watch we see the time but what about a watch that is more than just a timepiece? Take a Patek Philippe watch for example. When you look down at the carefully crafted face you see hours and hours of dedicated design and craftsmanship. Look closer still and you will see years of gradually perfected designs and innovations and when you look from afar you see a watch of timeless style that is built to last. Indeed, it’s for these, and many more, reasons that Patek Philippe can look back on an uninterrupted legacy of 178 successful years in business, with 2017 seeing several significant anniversaries. These anniversaries have prompted this Genevan manufacturer to craft commemorative watches that recall significant events and offer the perfect opportunity to find an ideal addition to your wrist. In 2017, the Aquanaut collection is celebrating its 20th birthday by presenting the Ref. 5168G in 18K white gold. With a diameter of 42 mm, it introduces a new ‘Jumbo’ size in Patek Philippe’s sports chic segment. The second debut in the Aquanaut range is the exclusive Ref. 5650 in white gold with only a mere 500 limited edition watches endowed with the latest technical advances. Launched over 15 years ago, the Patek Philippe Advanced Research program stands out with two major innovations. The first one is the Spiromax® balance spring with a new geometry. The second innovation relates to flexible mechanisms made of steel, which results in a time-zone setting mechanism that reduces the number of parts from 37 to 12. It’s not only thinner but also works without lubrication and wear and in a world first, both innovations are integrated in the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650.

Patek Phillipe is also celebrating the 40th anniversary of the world-renowned 240 movement. Introduced in 1977, the ultra-thin, self-winding calibre 240 movement has established itself as one of the mainstays of Patek Philippe’s success. In 2017 the manufacturer presents various models that showcase its versatility with designs that range from skeletonised faces and rose and white gold designs to remarkably graphic dials in ebony black with contrasting finissage. These anniversary editions are a perfect example of the beauty and originality of Patek Philippe and are the ultimate addition to your life and style.

G OURMET We catch up with all the latest news from some of our favourite chefs, eateries, hotels and pubs!
EXCLUSIVE ALE, FRESH
pizza and live music, at Sennen Just in time for the summer season, the team at Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove have unveiled their new Surf Den bar – a relaxed, outdoor bar that’s perfect for beach lovers, wave-chasers and, indeed, anybody who enjoys a thirst quenching drink, chilled DJ sets and freshly baked pizzas, all with the stunning view of Sennen’s crystalline waters. Incredibly passionate about quality, the team uses only the finest, local ingredients when custom-making your pizza. What’s more, each one is made fresh in front of you – even the homemade thin crust, but don’t be offended if they don’t share their secret ingredient! Combine one of these with the signature ale, Head Launcher – crafted exclusively by Skinner’s Brewery – and you’ve got a beachside dining experience that ticks all the boxes. So, next time you’re out exploring the reaches of west Penwith, why not stop by?
gossip COELIACS REJOICE, Britain’s favourite seaside dish is waiting for you
It’s good news for all coeliacs as Fraser’s Fish & Chips in Penzance is proud to serve coeliac accredited gluten-free fish and chips everyday alongside its traditional fish and chips. The significant investment into the kitchen, processes and training means that Fraser’s can genuinely say that its fish and chips are gluten free, as separate cooking processes ensure there is no cross-contamination. Whether you choose to eat in the fresh, fun and fabulously bright restaurant or out of the box while perched on the beach or on the prom or whether you are enjoying your food with friends for a special occasion or with

family as part of a fantastic day out, we think Fraser’s hits the spot! Kids love it too, with their meals served in a beach bucket with a spade, which means the beach bag gets replenished at the same time! The Fraser’s team are proud to call themselves fish and chips fanatics, which is obvious as happy tummies and big smiles can be seen everywhere during your visit. Summer is all-but upon us and it’s time we started making the most of the wonderful fresh produce that makes this county a nationwide foodie favourite. St Ives is great for this – especially with a trip to local chocolatiers, I Should Coco. ‘Your chocolate – your way’ is the team’s motto, but what does that mean? Well, they’re inviting you to take part in chocolate workshops, where you can try your hand at crafting your own chocolate creations, for yourself or as a gift. Even if you just want to see what it’s all about, why not pop in and experience all the tempting tastes and smells? From chocolate dipped strawberries to fresh cream truffles, what better way to satisfy that sweet tooth?

DINE in peace this summer When the sun starts to shine, people often flock to the coast, spending the day on the beach and following it with a meal in a lovely coastal restaurant. Well, that’s the plan at least. Often the coast is so busy that finding a table can be nearly impossible. With this in mind, we have a cunning solution! Why not try heading inland where there are some hidden gems that get overlooked by holidaymakers? One such restaurant is the two AA Rosette Rosewarne Manor, located in the delightful
countryside and just five minutes from Hayle and the coast. Delightful a la Carte and bar meals are served in the restaurant, which overlooks the extensive gardens, while al fresco dining is available in good weather. Enjoy excellent service with fine food in an unhurried environment. Open Wednesdays to Sundays. ROSEWARNE MANOR Gwinear Road, Connor Downs, Hayle TR27 5JQ 01209 610414 www.rosewarnemanor.co.uk

Penrose KitchEn Penrose Kitchen is a light and airy restaurant, serving
some of Cornwall’s award wining produce; from Primrose Herd pork to fish from Wing of St. Mawes; which could be enjoyed with a crisp white Rioja or an artisan Rebel Brewing real ale. “The initial greeting was so warm and welcoming that we all took an instant like to Penrose Kitchen and the service levels were absolutely amazing throughout the entire evening. Whilst the menu was a little limited in breadth, every base was covered with something for each of us; my wife, son of 15, daughter of 9 and me! The presentation of the food served was stunning and the quality of the ingredients and cooking far exceeded our expectations. It’s not often that you discover great food, great service and in a great location whilst away from home but I am delighted to say that Penrose Kitchen and the team delivered on every count!” Testimonial (Tripdvisor)

gossip JUST A FEW REASONS to try Stein’s Fish & Chips in Padstow… Being both a restaurant and takeaway, Stein’s Fish & Chips in Padstow is perfect, whether you’re fresh off the Camel Trail or simply taking in this quintessentially Cornish fishing port.
Sumptuous sundaes
at The Square Deli & Ice Cream Emporium If you and the little ones have been out and about enjoying the recent bout of sunshine, no doubt they’ve been tugging at your sleeves and begging for a Mr Whippy. But ice cream isn’t just for kids and nowhere is this more pertinent than The Square, Porthleven.
The chefs know a thing or two about tasty fish and chips and according to them one of the tricks is to use beef dripping. While making the batter crispier, sealing in the fish’s natural flavours, it also yields the tastiest chips – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. What’s more, the team chips more than 1.6 million potatoes a year, as well as using 5.4 tonnes of peas a year in their homemade mushy pea recipe.
While the chefs favour Atlantic cod, for both its superior flavour and firmness, they also offer some great alternatives, all year round, including lemon sole, mackerel and many more. There’s also a great kids menu, making Rick Stein’s a true family favourite. STEIN’S FISH & CHIPS South Quay, Padstow PL28 8BL 01841 532700 www.rickstein.com
Fresh air and food at The Lemon Arms The sun is shining, Cornwall continues to deliver an incredible backdrop to your summer and you have the whole weekend ahead of you, what will you end up doing? Well, how about embarking on a wistful creekside walk with nothing but the calm waters and peaceful air around you, before settling down in a beer garden to enjoy the sun’s rays and the taste of something cold and refreshing. The Lemon Arms in Mylor Bridge is the perfect location for a summertime walk followed by a delicious refuelling.
All made on site using only the freshest, local ingredients, the ice cream menu here is perfect if you want to enjoy something just that little bit special. The strawberry flavour, for instance, is made using homemade strawberry puree, which is added to the ice cream base during the freezing process and then rippled through it at the end. How does that sound?
The menu is filled with locally caught fish, farm-fresh meat and truly Cornish veg. Wash all of this down with one of St Austell Brewery’s iconic ales and you’ve got the ultimate way to while away your weekend. Indeed, pop in on a Sunday and you can sit down to a fantastic and evercomforting Sunday roast, leaving you refreshed and ready for your week ahead.
From chocolate and crunchy caramel and Cornish-cream vanilla to orange and dairy-free pina colada, there are plenty of options to tempt your taste buds. There’s also a long list of toppings, including old-reliable flakes and fudge sticks, which really round off the experience.

Prepare to get hooked on this new menu What do we love most about the summer? Is it the hotter days, the longer and lighter evenings or getting down to the beach and spending a day amongst sand, surf and sun? Or perhaps we love making the most of everything summer by indulging in some al fresco dining with some tapas and an ice cold drink one balmy summer’s evening. Hooked on the Rocks overlooking Swanpool beach and Falmouth bay is here to provide you with this ultimate end to a day. With a new menu featuring pork belly with white beans, chorizo and tomato; duck breast with sweet potato, red onion and coriander salsa;
Thai green curry with fragrant rice and mini spring rolls; ceviche of salmon with shaved fennel and orange; fresh crab and lobster straight from the tank, you and your taste buds will be spoilt for choice! fter getting a taste for fine dining over the past year, when my turn arrived for our office’s favourite event – the Foodie review, I was intrigued to see what Truro has to offer. Having heard great things about Gravy Boesti, my partner and I excitedly drove to the city, keen to taste what all the fuss was about. We were pleasantly surprised as soon as we walked in; the interior décor is contemporary and understated, turquoise walls adorned with a selection of original artworks and brightly coloured furniture creating the perfect atmosphere. Warmly greeted at the door, we sat down, ordered drinks and eagerly looked through the menu. One thing I never appreciate – however my partner as a pescatarian always does – is the variety of fresh and local vegetarian and pescatarian dishes on the menu. She was pleasantly surprised that she had as much choice as I did! After some heated debate between us (until I was eventually told in much unkinder words to make up my mind), I finally ordered. Confit duck leg, caramelised baby onions, potato rosti served with a light veal jus and a goats’ cheese and red onion marmalade tart with a balsamic dressing to start, followed by fillet of hake, line caught mussels in a white wine and saffron

sauce with wilted spinach and confit rump of local lamb, dauphinoise potatoes, carrot and swede mash and a rich veal jus – with desserts to follow later, if there was room… (there’s always room). One feature I love about Gravy Boesti is its open kitchen, a brave move for any restaurant I feel, and I love to see the skill and effort that goes in to what I am eating. Both our starters were, simply put, fantastic. Taking my responsibilities seriously, I selflessly declared the need to also try my partner’s starter – and I can confirm this was as good in quality, taste and presentation as mine. The bar had been set high with the starters, but the main course more than lived up to expectations. Everything on my plate was there for a reason, every ingredient complementing each other exquisitely. Both meals were again presented as beautifully as one might expect, but as an added bonus, the portions were more than healthy in size and neither of us left a morsel – it was all needed, all eaten and all delicious. As our plates were swiftly cleared, the head chef and owner Ashley came over and chatted to us about our meals. This small but personal touch added a lot to the experience. After working in the hospitality industry for a number of years, service is something I always
look out for, and is something I find can make or break a meal, no matter how good the food. Gravy Boesti has cracked this. The whole team were nothing but helpful and pleasant throughout and the service we received gave the restaurant a personal, approachable and friendly atmosphere that took away any of the pretentiousness that one may associate with such good food! This, we learned, is Ashley’s aim – he wants Gravy Boesti to be accessible, whether you are celebrating something special or are just looking for something to eat after shopping in Truro – everybody is welcome. Finishing the meal with desserts (I said there was always room) was, as ever, an inspired idea. The gooeyness of the warm chocolate fondant with homemade vanilla bean ice cream bordered on ridiculous and the crème brûlée with shortbread biscuits and damson compote had spectacular texture and taste. We both left with appeased appetites and large smiles – what was not to be happy about? We had a delicious, easy-going three-course meal and I had a very easy review to write!

A roaring SUCCESS
The Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show was a huge success, allowing Cornish businesses and visitors to meet, connect and share in a great weekend. visitors the chance to work with specialist local companies in the home and garden sectors. We continue to turn away big nationals so our local economy can grow and I am pleased our visitors are contributing in the same way by shopping locally. I would like to thank all that supported the event and we look forward to our next events coming up in September and October.”

n Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April, Cornwall’s premier home and garden event took place at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge. Over the last seven years, the event has grown rapidly and this year didn’t fail to impress. All of us here at Cornwall Living are proud to support such a fantastic event alongside Pirate FM and sponsors Cornwall Woodburners. Recognised for its exceptional interior goods, gardens, renewable services and self-build assistance, the event drew crowds from across the county and beyond to discover what Cornwall has to offer. This year saw around 3,800 attendees, and over 140 of the region’s top makers, designers and suppliers come together under one roof to offer an extensive selection of home and garden products and services, which included associate sponsors Duke Stone of Cornwall and BJ Taylor Construction and Groundworks. Catching up with Marketing Manager Katie Parcell, we discover just how successful the event was: “There was such an amazing atmosphere in the venue, I was so pleased to see so many smiles from visitors and exhibitors. It was great to welcome new companies into the mix and I hope it proved just as beneficial to them as it did to the returning clients. Overall a fantastic turn out for the show with plenty of happy visitors.” Once again, the ever-popular ‘a bite of Cornwall’ food and drink market and café was thoroughly enjoyed by all, with the delicious artisan produce making quite the impression. This year also saw the homeware and interiors market grow with more wonderful regional designers and makers. Indeed, it was so popular it looks like it will grow again for 2018! Home Show Managing Director, Andrew Weaver, adds: “Each year the event has increased its awareness and popularity across the region. We take pride in offering

Are you making full use of your local pharmacy? As our GPs become ever more inundated with patients, we’re asked to visit our pharmacist to help alleviate the high demand. Of course, pharmacists are more than happy to help! We catch up with the team from Reeds Pharmacy in Truro, who tell us that the best use of pharmacists is not just when there’s an emergency as they can help with your regular, everyday care too. Nobody wants to take chances with their children’s health. The team at Reeds Pharmacy can help with a lot of childhood ailments: although they will need to see the child in some cases. There are even a few medicines they can supply free of charge for children under a local NHS scheme for some cases of conjunctivitis, impetigo and nappy rash. Of course, there’s more to good dispensing than just handing over a pack of tablets. Adults who start a new medicine may qualify for the NHS new medicine service with extra support to get the most from their new prescription, and in an NHS medicines use review you can discuss how best to use your prescriptions. This is separate from the clinical review that your GP does and can only be done by the pharmacy from which you collect your medicines.

Get the kids excited about Cornish heritage at Poldark Mine If you need a way to keep the children entertained in a fun and interesting environment, then a visit to Poldark Mine might be just what you are looking for! A fantastic day out for the entire family, Cornwall’s only complete underground tin mine, just outside of Helston, really is unique. An exceptionally well-preserved piece of Cornish heritage, a visit to Poldark Mine is a chance to discover more about your history, with fun and education in equal measure. Explore the underground labyrinths and caverns, learn about tin production, marvel at the mighty mid-century beam engine and explore the museum and open-air exhibits. The mine is set in four acres of riverside woodland and gardens on the River Cober valley. The underground tours are considered to be “one of the two most atmospheric mine tours in Europe,” as said by the former chairman of English Heritage, which makes them perfect for getting those ‘wow’ reactions from the kids. Look out for upcoming events at this magical example of Cornish heritage.

Fun and foam Sailing charity Turn To Starboard will be hosting a family fun day on Sunday 9th July, with a bouncy castle, face painters and an ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition. Teams can still sign up for the contest, which will feature rounds of inflatable jousting and a foam-covered assault course. The event at Malpas Park in Truro, which will run from 11am to 5pm, will be held in aid of this charity, which helps veterans affected by military operations by taking them sailing. “We are looking for teams of ten to enter the contest to get wet, whacked and walloped and take up the challenge of being the Turn To Starboard It’s a Knockout Champions of 2017,” says organiser Neil Triggs. “The contest will be an ideal team building and bonding exercise for local businesses, groups or sports teams as well as raising funds for a good cause. Many service personnel who sail with us have experienced hostile conditions on operational tours and often have difficulty readjusting to normal life. Turn To Starboard offers individuals the chance to spend time with likeminded people while learning new skills to help start new careers.” For those who aren’t competing, a funfair, hot food stalls and a beer tent, sponsored by Skinner’s Brewery, will provide plenty of fun.

Olympic medalist visits Polwhele House Polwhele House, near Truro, welcomed the World Champion rower, Frances Houghton, for the morning in order to inspire and educate the children on competing at a high level. Houghton won silver medals at the 2004, 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games and was part of four World Championship-winning crews in the quadruple sculls. Of course, Houghton is no stranger to competing at a young age, having first made the junior team in 1995 aged 14, and she finished fourth in the quadruple scull in her first World Rowing Junior Championships just a year later. Headmaster Alex McCullough was happy to host Frances, saying: “Having such an illustrious career from such a young age is so inspiring for our children here at Polwhele House. We encourage our pupils to pursue a range of sports, fully appreciating all the benefits to be gained from competing, including fitness, motor co-ordination, teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie.” Polwhele House educates children between three and thirteen, including pre-preparatory and preparatory classes. Polwhele House offers a range of sports facilities, including a sand school and stables in order to allow the children to train and compete in equestrian events.

Are you aware of the new rules surrounding term-time holidays?
All aboard! At Bodmin General, a charming 1950s Cornish branch line station, you’ll be transported back to a time when travelling by train was a magical experience – perfect if you love Thomas, or have visions of the Hogwarts Express! There’s something special about the sights, sounds and smells of steam engines and heritage diesel trains, something that the whole family can enjoy – even the dog, for just £1 extra! Say hello to the friendly people you’ll meet; spot the driver and fireman in the engine; keep an eye out for the ticket inspector, or the guard blowing their whistle as you leave the station. One for the diary is the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, which will take place on 28th and 29th May, as well as the Fathers’ Day weekend. Families can also make the most of money-saving family tickets, and the half price and kids go free event on 28th and 29th October. Then in December, why not visit Santa By Steam?
The Supreme Court has recently ruled in a landmark case about parents who take their children out of school for term-time holidays. The outcome of this case means that even if your child has a good attendance record, you can still be prosecuted unless you have express permission for the absence.
For more information, timetables and ticket prices, call 01872 73555, visit www.bodminrailway.co.uk or email enquiries@bodminrailway.co.uk
The guidelines say that your child can only miss school if they are too ill to go in or you have gained permission from the school. Gaining permission means making an application to the head teacher who has to decide if there are exceptional circumstances that can justify the absence. If you take your children out of school without permission you can be fined and if you do not pay the fine you can be prosecuted and even receive a jail sentence.

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional, and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible. Healthy sight can contribute to a healthy start in life. A child’s visual system develops over the first few years of their life. Amblyopia (lazy eye) is best treated before the age of four but continued improvement can be made up to the age of seven; after this critical period, perfect vision cannot be achieved. Amblyopia and squints are evident by the age of four and may be detected by the parent, health visitor or a teacher, but if they are not picked up and if a child has an uncorrected refractive error it will impact on the child’s ability to perform well at school. It may also hinder the child in later life to enter certain professions where good eyesight is a prime requirement. The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted (hypermetropic) which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if a refractive error is not properly corrected there is a risk of permanently poor vision. Children’s eyes, as well as their visual needs, differ from those of adults in a
number of important ways. A child’s immature visual system is more prone to irreversible damage. It’s therefore important to have your child regularly assessed by a registered optical professional. The main childhood eye problems relate to improper development of the visual system. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (squint) and uncorrected refractive error (short sightedness [myopia], long sightedness and astigmatism) are the most common. They are also all related. If a child has a squint, or if one eye has a significantly different refractive error from the other, this will lead, if uncorrected, to a lazy eye. The less dominant eye is effectively ‘switched off’ and does not develop properly. The child accommodates to use the eye which is least long-sighted which leaves the other eye with reduced visual acuity. In the UK all children under 16 and those under 19 and in full-time education qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test. Remarkably only 22% of under-16s have ever had a sight test. So why not book in a test with Reid and Gordon in Truro now?

premiere screening at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth. It’s always a joy to visit this enthralling museum, set in a stunning location overlooking the largest natural harbour in Europe, and tonight proves another revealing eye-opener. The charity is the brainchild of Squadron Leader Shaun Pascoe, who spent 16 years in the RAF, operating in some of the world’s most dangerous warzones, as the Officer Commanding of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). MERT was tasked with flying into the battlefield, often under heavy enemy fire, to rescue injured service personnel. Deeply moved by his ordeals, Shaun turned to sailing as a way of readjusting back into civilian life. Amazed by the transformative effect sailing had, he vowed to use his experience to help others in a similar situation, founding Turn To Starboard. “I felt in a better place and it markedly improved my interaction with others, delivering a new sense of purpose, value and belonging,” explains Shaun. This ultimately culminated in the Round Britain Challenge. The film that captured the voyage is an inspiring story of teamwork; people – many of whom were sailing novices – uniting under a single goal. Parallels could be drawn between the experience of crewing together on a boat, and military operations: shared experiences, pulling together to solve the problems faced. Indeed, there were many challenges along the way – both physical and emotional. But, crucially, the central thread throughout is redemption and finding peace with oneself – a universal theme that we can all relate to. The sea has long played a fundamental part in Cornish identity, and it’s endlessly inspiring to witness a Cornish charity achieving so much through sail, providing both new skills and renewed optimism. Indeed, the film reveals another recurring theme fundamental to Turn To Starboard’s entire ethos: the notion of passing on the baton, handing down expertise, knowledge and skills from one person to the next.

Former Royal Marine, Dan Fielding began his journey with Turn To Starboard as a beneficiary and has since gone on to become a skipper in his own right, now training others. Founder Shaun continues: “We believe there is something immeasurable about seeing the world from the sea. Sailing promotes a can-do attitude, a sense of well-being and camaraderie amongst all who participate.” The documentary is a wonderful introduction both to the charity and the world of sailing itself. The smiles and solidarity at the Q&A session that follows the screening play testament to this, and the night finishes with the announcement that the Round Britain Challenge’s success will see it return this year. While, as Shaun is the first to concede, the charity offers no miracle cure, it provides, quite literally, a breath of fresh air, and the perfect environment in which to thrive. That is reason enough, to get behind this wonderful cause and to get out on the water too.

Hone your camera skills in Cornwall and abroad with Carla Regler’s professional photography workshops.
WORDS BY
DAN WARDEN
W
hether you live in Cornwall or enjoy visiting on a regular basis, there’s one pastime that allows you to capture the beauty of Cornwall with ease: photography. For photographers, Cornwall has become somewhat of a Mecca, with its rolling, hilly landscapes and dazzling coastal views. Wherever you are, there’s plenty to inspire the eyes of anyone with a camera in hand. Porthleven-based photographer, Carla Regler tells us that it’s all about being creative with the camera. Indeed, one look at her website and many portfolios shows that, time and time again, she has proven this. From the raging storms of the Atlantic as they throw themselves, in vain, against the walls of Porthleven to the beautifully still seas at Land’s End towards dusk, Carla’s ability to capture Cornwall in all of its moods is one we could all learn from. And why not? If you have a camera that you wish you could get more out of (I know I have!), Carla offers workshops to those of all abilities who’re looking to hone their skills. The best part is, they’re not just limited to Cornwall, as Carla offers clients the chance
to travel the world with her, capturing everything from the rolling savannahs of Africa to the snowbound reaches of Iceland, each in their own unique light and aweinspiring focus. This year, she’ll also be heading to the Isle of Wight’s Round the Island Boat Race, which she’ll be capturing aboard a private rib. Why not join her and learn a thing or two about capturing the moment – as quickly as it may pass – with what can only be described as professional precision? So, if you think your life through a lens could benefit from Carla’s expert tuition, get in touch. We see lots of photography here at Cornwall Living, but one thing we’ve learned is that anybody can take a picture – it’s in capturing the moment that the skill truly lies.

| OUT & ABOUT
AND THE SEA
Tate St Ives is back and better than ever before, with incredible exhibitions and a summer filled with inspiration.
W
hen we think of St Ives there are a few iconic scenes that will always come to mind first: the characterful, cobbled streets, the picturesque harbour and, of course, Tate St Ives as it stands impressively above Porthmeor beach. So, dive into the two exhibitions about the ocean, landscape and ceramics studio and feel inspired for your summer by the sea. The coast and landscape are an endless source of inspiration and influence for artist Jessica Warboys. An interest in personal and collective memories related to mythology and landscape drives her work, which moves continually between film, performance, painting and sculpture. You can often see her combine these mediums so that the sculptures you see on display are also characters in her films. Her sea paintings are made with the sea on the beach. Warboys throws colour directly onto huge pieces of damp canvas, which are then submerged. This process allows the waves, wind and sand to shift and scatter the pigment, painting the canvas. The exhibition ‘That Continuous Thing’ looks at the ceramics studio, a place where tradition meets experimentation. Explore 100 years of ceramics with over 140 works from 50 artists from Europe, Japan and North America. The show begins in the 1910s and ‘20s, through the Californian clay revolution of the 1950s and ‘60s and ends with the playful ceramics of contemporary artists. Throughout the summer you’ll find a fantastic range of events from daily tours to family activities. A particularly special summer event is ‘Late at Tate St Ives’ on 16th June. Join the team after hours for an evening created by artist Naomi Frears. Hosted throughout the night by Dr Bramwell of Brighton’s The Catalyst Club, you can expect performances, film screenings, music and cocktails! If you’d like an afternoon of creative activities, investigating art and hands-on play, pop along to the ‘Family Sunday’ on 18th June, which is for families with children under 18 with all activities free with gallery admission.
On 14th October 2017, Tate St Ives will open the UK’s newest contemporary art space. The extension to the gallery will open with an extra 500sqm of space for temporary exhibitions. The original building will show the 20th-century artists who lived and worked in St Ives, demonstrating the role of the town in the story of modern art.
DISCOVER MORE The ‘Studio and the Sea’ is open daily from 10am until 5.20pm and will run until 3rd September 2017.

| ART n Cscape Art at The Old
Workshop, Charlestown
It might not be on your radar as a hive of creativity, but Charlestown is hiding some fantastic art, antiques and fabulous Cornish crafts.
S
ituated just outside of St Austell on Cornwall’s tranquil south coast sits the beautiful village of Charlestown. The picturesque harbour draws in visitors due to its idyllic and historical status and is also used as a key filming location for BBC’s Poldark. Venturing into the centre of the village you’ll find a treasure trove of arts, crafts and antiques in the form of three eclectic businesses, which turn this unassuming yet pretty village into a centre of creativity. The Old Workshop is a delightful historic building that is home to The Craft Kiln, Cscape Art and Sail Loft Emporium. Originally used as a gunpowder store, this characterful building is now home to a fabulous collection of all things inspired.
n The Craft Kiln
Sail Loft Emporium Packed with a huge variety of antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items, the Emporium is a haven for browsing. Search the numerous stalls and cabinet shelves for gems to adorn your home, gifts for any occasion or unusual additions to your collection.

Cscape Art Photographer Mick Blakey captures an abundance of atmospheric Cornish land and seascapes while his wife Sarah paints scenes of work and leisure. Her original style is perfect for depicting miners at work as well as life around the many local harbours. Amongst new products this season are fretwork by Jimagination, sculptured wire animals, paper cuts and lampshades.

Inspired by nature Proving that nature inspires creativity, we take a peek inside some of Cornwall’s unique design studios.
DISCOVER MORE Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, DCH and the Outset Foundation, Outset Cornwall provides a flexible programme of business start-up support, helping individuals explore their business idea through information sessions, specialist workshops and one-toone coaching.
T
he beauty of the Cornish landscape with its breathtaking vistas and striking coastline has long been the muse for many talented artists. Following in their footsteps, graphic designer Alison Bick and illustrators Jasmine Foster and Natalie Toms are using their own distinctive locations as the perfect backdrop for their creative work. After her children left home, Alison decided to refocus and to sell her own designed homeware, prints and greetings cards from illustrations that were inspired by her life in Cornwall and her love of flowers and nature. To be at the heart of this, she built her ‘shedquarters’ in her garden overlooking the stunning Gannel estuary in Newquay. With a modern, bright and airy feel, Alison’s studio is the perfect space in which to work and be inspired. Having always dreamed of owning her own shop with which to share her art, Jasmine completely fell in love with a quirky little building in Polperro. Once named the smallest shop in England, The Smallest Shop in Kernow now provides the ideal setting for Jasmine’s whimsical paintings. A recent visitor aptly remarked that it looked like a fairy’s workshop, which pretty much epitomises the magic of the location. Keen nature lover Natalie spent many summers marvelling at the tall trees and
little creatures in the fields behind her grandparents’ house. Given the chance to recreate an environment where her work could capture the wonders of nature, Natalie built her own studio, Thickets, in her garden in Lanlivery. Looking out onto a beautiful view of a neighbouring meadow and pockets of woodland, Natalie is able to observe the wildlife that so deeply inspires her illustrations. Not only sharing a passion for creativity, all three artists were also encouraged to start their own businesses after completing a business start-up programme run by Outset Cornwall. This really does highlight the inspirational county we are so lucky to live in, while also reminding people that our passions don’t have to remain a hobby, all we need is a little helping hand!

MAKING MINERALS
s e i r o m and me
While Cornwall is steeped in mining history, we now make our memories with time spent together in the sun.
S
et in 18 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, Cornwall Gold has been busy producing jewellery for almost 30 years, with one simple aim: making memories with jewellery that reflects Cornwall’s proud mining heritage, outstanding natural beauty and unique way of life. Pay a visit and you can indulge in some much needed retail therapy in the amazing showroom, before visiting the Cornish Pantry Restaurant. All ingredients used are sourced locally – from within a 20-mile radius of the kitchen, in fact – making any meal here a real local affair. The breakfast menu, which features all your early morning favourites, includes bubble and squeak and even an award-winning Cornish breakfast served on a tinner’s shovel! But don’t let the novel presentation fool you. Drawing on the site’s rich heritage, Cornwall Gold deserves recognition for being home to the last remaining tin mill in Europe. Tolgus Tin Mill is rich with history, providing the tin that features so beautifully in the site’s Tolgus collection – a bespoke range of jewellery forged from tin, combined with silver and gold.
For those of you who’ve ever wondered what it was like to work in the Cornish mining industry at its peak, guided tours through Tolgus Mill come highly recommended, offering a wonderful insight into the lives of the men and children who once worked there. You can also see a working set of Cornish stamps, thought to be the last in existence at over 150 years old! While Tolgus was undoubtedly safer than many of Cornwall’s underground mines, the tour tells the story of many of the working individuals once employed there, reminding you of how dangerous the work could still be. Conditions were noisy and wet; children were expected to follow the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers before them, being placed on duty in the slime

ADVICE |
LET YOUR
HOME
HELP YOU Matt Begley, retirement planning expert at Harris Begley, explains the importance of getting the right advice when it comes to releasing equity from your home.
W
hen the idea first came about, Equity Release meant you could achieve the finer things in life by releasing money from the very bricks and mortar of your home – a yacht, big holiday, new car! Now, it’s become much more than that, allowing individuals aged 55 and over to release money from their homes, either in the form of a lump sum or in regular intervals, helping fund their day-to-day lives. Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, Equity Release is now an invaluable tool when it comes to funding retirement, but there are some things you need to know before plunging headlong into a plan. For instance, there are two types of Equity Release that may apply to you, the first being ‘lifetime mortgages’ and the second being ‘home reversion’ plans. Lifetime mortgages This route requires you taking a mortgage that doesn’t demand monthly repayments. “Generally speaking,” explains Matt, “the loan and rolled-up interest are repaid by your estate when the last person living in your home (and on your plan) either passes away or is moved into care. Funds can be received either in a lump sum, or in smaller increments as a steady income.” Home reversion With a home reversion plan, however, your provider will purchase your home – or a part of it – allowing you to live there for the rest of
your life. “Taking into account your age and health, they will pay you with a tax-free lump sum, or you can again choose to receive regular payments. One advantage of such a plan is that you’ll be able to occupy the house with the same restrictions as if you still owned it privately,” continues Matt. Each of these categories offer many options, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages, which is why it’s crucial that you seek financial advice prior to choosing one. Without the appropriate advice, you may find that your tax position is affected, or indeed your eligibility for means-tested benefits or ability to move or to sell your home. It’s also important that your adviser has the relevant, professional qualifications. “Making the right decisions for your future can seem a daunting prospect and it’s essential that you take expert advice,” says Matt. “Harris Begley takes pride in offering a personal service that takes your individual circumstances into account.” Get in touch for a free, no-obligation initial consultation to discuss your requirements and plan for a brighter future.

ESCAPE WITH COMPLETE IMMERSION INTO YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OR TV SHOW WITH THE NEW LG SIGNATURE OLED TV
WINDOW TO
ANOTHER
WORLD
The first thing you notice about the innovative design of the TV is the razor-thin profile. The OLED panel, measuring only 2.57mm thin in the 65-inch model, can be mounted directly on the wall with only magnetic brackets, eliminating any gap between the TV and the wall. Up-firing speakers complete the sense of immersion along with unrivalled Dolby Atmos sound. This design of the W7 series invites the illusion of gazing out of a window instead of watching TV. The W7 OLED TV series builds on LG OLED’s revolutionary pixel dimming control technology, which renders perfect black without any light leakage to offer a limitless contrast ratio, with one billion possible colours. Featuring the latest version of LG’s intuitive webOS smart TV platform, viewers will have no trouble accessing premium HDR content online. With Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos integrated tightly into the newest OLED products, viewers will be able to recapture the magic of the cinema and experience their favourite movies with their original clarity, depth and imagination intact. If you would like to see this entertainment powerhouse in action then visit HBH Woolacotts’ St Austell or Bude showrooms.

We speak with Consultant Urologist at Duchy Hospital, Mr Matthew Hotston, about a groundbreaking new procedure for men.
DISCOVER MORE The UroLift procedure is available on a private basis at Duchy Hospital and costs £4,315. Interest-free finance is available, subject to terms and conditions, should you prefer to spread the cost.
ê BELOW
Mr Matthew Hotston, Consultant Urologist
O
ver half of men over the age of 50 will develop troublesome urinary symptoms that affect their quality of life. These include frequent trips to the toilet, getting up at night to empty their bladder and reduction in the stream of urine flow. As a consequence, men tend to significantly alter their daily lifestyle to accommodate this, such as avoiding travelling long distances, stopping drinking in the evening and avoiding places where there is no toilet. Similarly, the disturbance in sleep results in many feeling fatigued during the day. For the majority of men, the cause is an enlarged prostate gland. Mr Matthew Hotston, Consultant Urologist at Duchy Hospital, says that it is now one of the most common referrals he receives. For men with minor symptoms, simple lifestyle changes may be all that is required. However, for those with more bothersome symptoms, the options are regular lifelong medication or invasive surgery. Medication can be effective but unfortunately it can lead to significant side effects, such as reduced libido and erection/ejaculation problems. In addition, a significant proportion of men will still require surgery. The traditional surgical operation is the trans-urethral-resection of prostate (TURP).
This involves a long general anaesthetic, whereby the internal part of the prostate gland is ‘cored out’. After the operation, a bladder tube (catheter) is placed and the patient stays for two nights in hospital. The risks include bleeding, scar tissue formation and erection/ ejaculation problems. A new, minimally invasive, daycase procedure called the prosthetic urethral lift (UroLift) has recently been approved by NICE in the UK. It involves a short anaesthetic whereby tiny implants are placed into the prostate gland, drawing the lobes of the gland apart to improve the flow of urine. Patients leave home on the same day with no need for a catheter. The research shows excellent results in symptom improvement, early return to daily activities, and no erection/ ejaculation complaints. UroLift is a safe and effective alternative for men who do not wish (or are unable) to take medication for their urinary symptoms, or require surgery but want to avoid the potential risks associated with it. Mr Hotston is the first to offer this state-of-the-art procedure at Duchy Hospital.

UNCOVER THE
Step into history and discover a completely different world steeped in magic. WORDS BY
Annie Cowen
S DISCOVER MORE The museum is open daily from 1st April to 31st October. For a truly enchanting experience go to one of the candlelight evenings, which are open from 8pm to 11pm with last entry at 10.30pm and will be held on 3rd June, 22nd July, 5th August, 26th August and 28th October.
tanding on the north Cornish coast it isn’t hard to feel a sense of magic and wonder as the waves break against the impressive, weatherbeaten cliffs and incredible historical sites dot the landscape. But there is one location in particular that draws you in with promises of intrigue and history: the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle. Take a walk around the fascinating museum and marvel at the wisdom of our ancestors through a history that is more often glimpsed and hinted at than understood. The museum goes beyond the stereotype of the crone and the media horror stories to explore the real world of witchcraft and the magic-makers: the wayside witches and wise women, the cunning men, the traditional healers and charmers (many of whom still practise their magic today). The museum has been in Boscastle since 1960 and is deeply rooted in the magical landscape of Cornwall. The founder of the museum explained: “In this quiet corner of England there is a strange feeling. That is why
the Museum of Witchcraft is located here. One is standing on the edge of the beyond.” Peer into the beyond in the forest at night-time gallery where you’ll come face to face with piskies, tree sprites, green men, horned gods and goddesses. Find out about the power of sacred sites in the Cornish landscape and the connection of witchcraft with the sea. Normal mirrors might reflect this world but peering into a dark mirror may enable you to see into another world, time or place. Discover other ways people have tried to uncover hidden, unknowable knowledge such as Ouija boards, tarot cards, crystal balls and palm reading. Children find the museum particularly fascinating and many are surprised to discover how many objects in the stories they read have actually been used by real witches. For example, Harry Potter fans will be delighted by the collection of mandrakes, broomsticks and even a bezoar stone! So, whether it’s herbs and healings, spells and charms, amulets and talismans, protection magic or something a little darker, the museum has something to intrigue and inspire everyone! Head down to Boscastle and find out why this museum is one of Cornwall’s oldest and most popular.

T
he annual, three-day Royal Cornwall Show is truly a labour of love for Cornwall Hospice Care (CHC) Head of Retail, Mike Voyzey and his team. He tells us: “I can’t imagine us not being a part of the show. Our pop-up shop always does roaring trade and it’s in the same place every year, so people know where to come.” The event represents a great chance for Mike and co. to meet with those who help fund the care that the charity provides for patients and families affected by terminal illness. He explains that it’s what happens before and after the event that takes the time, “from erecting the marquees to moving all the donated stock to the Wadebridge showground in our vans and then shipping it all back out again afterwards. “It’s hard work for our staff and volunteers but it’s worth it, because it’s surprising how many come to the stand looking for a bargain or, if it’s cold and wet, for warm, dry clothes!” The show is also a chance to celebrate the success of the 31 charity shops that Mike oversees – the biggest charity chain in
Cornwall. Collectively, the stores provided a contribution of £720,000 towards the cost of care provided last year, something that Mike’s extremely proud to have been a part of. “Our staff and volunteers, as well as our many shoppers are making a huge difference to our charity, which needs more than £5 million a year to provide the specialist care we offer. What’s more, the money raised by our shops stays in Cornwall, benefitting our local communities.” If you’re attending the show, you’ll also find CHC Head of Fundraising, Oli Hoare on a smaller stand, offering cakes, promoting the charity’s new Great Cornish Cake Bake book and raising awareness ahead of the new Mount to Mont Cycle event that’s taking place this coming October. The show takes place from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th June and we’ll certainly be popping along to the CHC stands and it’d be great to see you there too!
