The Camel Estuary and its surrounding coast and countryside is a truly unique location on Cornwall's north coast. The estuary itself has a venerable history, being used since Roman times as a safe haven from the wild waters of the Atlantic. By the 18th century, Padstow, which lies at the mouth of River Camel, was the second largest importer of coal in Cornwall after the maritime hub of Falmouth. The estuary is now designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and provides a habitat for many bird and wildlife species that include otter, bats, dormice, kingfisher, little egret, marsh orchid and marsh marigold. One of the best ways to explore the estuary itself is to cycle or walk along its banks via the Camel Trail. Following a disused railway line from Padstow to Wenfordbridge, it stretches some 18 miles along a largely traffic-free trail.

Venture further afield, and this area of Cornwall reveals a host of incredible beaches. The seven bays of Porthcothan, Treyarnon, Constantine, Booby's, Mother Ivey's, Harlyn and Trevone are a glorious collection of sandy beaches that are typical of this northcoast playground. Think world-class surf breaks and endless opportunities for days in the sun and on the sand. Head further north and you'll discover coastal-chic Polzeath, picturesque Port Isaac and historic Tintagel. Explore to the south and you'll find the surf city of Newquay with its vibrant vibe.

Copperfish Distillery has been developing its darker side of spirits with the launch of Copperfish Black Rum. One for the curious or adventurous, this incredibly dark rum starts with a fermentation of selected cane sugars and molasses in their harbourside distillery.

After distillation this premium Cornish distilled rum is aged in a black sherry cask to develop its unique colour and flavour. It’s bottled at a navy strength of 57% alcohol volume to really enhance its full deep and dark flavours, while giving a nod to our local nautical heritage. Try it in a ‘Copper the Morning’ cocktail with an equal measure of Manzanilla sherry and a half measure of falernum with ice and orange peel. Cheers!

OF WOOD

Did you know that Britain was once a wooded isle with over 98% of the land covered in trees, and that now, only 2% of that ancient wild wood survives? This startling statistic lies at the core of Plant One Cornwall, a registered Community Interest Company solely focused on putting trees in the ground for the benefit of us all. Working with private landowners and the community, as well as partnering with businesses such as Post & Beam, Plant One Cornwall aims to restore and revitalise the ever-shrinking temperate rainforest – a habitat found here in the UK that is thought, by many, to be more endangered than its tropical counterparts.

HOME 12 | CAMEL ESTUARY
Sustainability, carbon offsetting and ensuring a future for our planet’s green spaces are all paramount to the business ethos for Post & Beam.
ABOVE é The wood used for the sun deck creates striking organic lines RIGHT  Vast exposed wooden beams used at The Studio

Also known as the ‘Celtic rainforest’, this truly special habitat is becoming increasingly rare, its importance lying not only in its ability to act as a ‘carbon sink’, but also in the fact that its lush conditions are home to rare plants, lichens and fungi, as well as an array of unusual animals.

Led by Carl Rowlinson and Rai Lewis, Plant One understands that management of new woodland is as, if not more, important than physically planting trees. This is something that the founders of handcrafted timber building company Post & Beam, Tim Simpson and Tom Jubb, know only too well. “Because of the high value of land in the UK, this becomes difficult to address with private landowners. If a woodland fails, then so does the carbon offset sold with it. Plant One can pinpoint the exact planting location of the trees we purchase,” says Tom, and when you consider that a typical Post & Beam client is indirectly planting approximately 10 to 20 trees via Plant One Cornwall, this partnership is a significant force for good, supporting the rewilding of our countryside and the revitalising of the Celtic rainforest which has, perhaps, never been more important.

Some 90% of the raw material used by Post & Beam is oak, sourced from the sustainably managed forests of northern France. “French commercial oak forests are so well managed and have been for more than 300 years,” says Tom. “In partnership with the forestry management in France, we replant the equivalent of all the trees that we use in our projects.” Timber is a fantastic building material as it stores C02 for the life of the building. However, says Tom: “We also feel that it is our responsibility to encourage and promote non-commercial rewilding and native woodland creation here in Cornwall. We do it because we recognise the long-lasting effects of re-wilding, and the importance of carbon offsetting in securing a stable, green environment for future generations.”

With a determination to carefully curate the most vibrant, chic and contemporary wares for our homes and gardens, WOW Cornwall’s expert advice on the many brands in their extensive collection has proven vital for those looking to arrange a dream home, and one range of furniture in particular is turning heads when it comes to idyllic interiors.

Here in Cornwall, we are surrounded by the coast and the idea of coastal living, and WOW Cornwall’s Newlyn Collection reflects just that. Celebrating both nature and neutrality, the Newlyn Collection brings rural greens and soft grey hues to your interior, working well in any home that hopes to bring Cornwall’s beautiful blend of coast and country inside.

One of the defining characteristics of painted wood furniture is its use of contrast, used to highlight the unique features of the furniture. The Newlyn Collection is no exception, its contrasting shades of green, grey and natural wood allowing their contemporary design to really sing.

Our favourite aspect of the Newlyn Collection is its ability to help you bring the outdoors in, not only enabling you to create a beautiful garden room full of life and colour, but giving you the tools you need to realise that sophisticated ‘house in the country’ feel throughout your home. The two-door cupboards would

make a great addition to a traditional, shaker-style kitchen where more storage space is required, as would the extending dining tables. Or, if you need a place to toss your keys when you enter the front door and a handy place to slot your shoes, the console tables provide a modern and versatile update to a country classic. And whether your kitchen centres around a breakfast bar or the aforementioned Newlyn dining table, you’ll find a fabulous choice of stools and chairs, from sink-into seats with plush upholstery, to gorgeous, hand-woven rope seats.

In terms of style, there’s a feeling of handmade craft that exudes from each piece. The cornicing and panelling of the two-door cupboards is a great example, as are the hand-woven rope seats and elegant spindling of the dining chairs and bar stools. For those who believe that beauty is born from simplicity, the Newlyn Collection is sure to impress.

FOR THE FUTURE A design

Discovering how sustainable architecture has created an incredible ocean-side home.

ARCO2 pride themselves on wellconsidered, site-specific sustainable architecture that provides the user with health and wellbeing benefits and low running costs. Their designs, although modern, use traditional local materials to work in harmony with the landscape as well as the environment. ARCO2 believe that a sustainable lifestyle, coupled with ethical sustainable architecture, should not be a ‘style’, but embedded in everything we do, no matter who you are or what your business is.

Situated high above one of the most sought-after bays on the north Cornish coast, Mawgan Porth, ARCO2 were commissioned to replace an existing dwelling that was no longer fit for purpose with a contemporary, highly sustainable home that would make the most of the ocean views at every turn. ARCO2 were chosen by the clients in part for their passion for high-quality architecture in Cornwall, but also due to the fact that they design ‘healthy’ buildings built around the lives and needs of their clients.

The build was a ‘fabric-first’ construction. By maximising the performance of the components and materials that make up the building fabric itself, before considering the use of mechanical or electrical building services systems, helps to reduce capital and operational costs, improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. With a complex design, Director of ARCO2, Nathan Davis, explained how some of the challenges were tackled: “The use of 3D design software helped us to overcome most construction related complexities at the design stage. Thankfully, the main contractor (Billy Fullerton, Dan Hatfield and Ben Rushton of Lion Park Construction) had an exceptional eye for detail, taking great care and attention throughout the entire construction period. We had a close working relationship with them, with weekly meetings in order to keep the detailing on track. Each and every meeting was solution-led with Billy investing his time into bringing solutions rather than problems.

HOME 16 | CAMEL ESTUARY
 ABOVE Elements
Mark Ashbee

“The steel frame installation was a lengthy and painstaking process as they had to be millimetre perfect to enable a multitude of junctions to meet correctly. Cold bridge and airtightness detailing had to be detailed and then rehearsed on site. Again, Billy had exceptional foresight in working through details with us ahead of the construction programme. As outside and inside elements required continuous insulation as part of the ‘fabric-first’ approach, this required a further considered approach. Due to the elevated location, it often experienced 70+ mph winds and rain which the build team took in their stride at each and every stage of works.”

Due to its ocean-front location, the aptly named Elements gifts the occupants with a view of the sea from every internal living space; although ARCO2 were careful to design the building so no two were exactly the same, making each vista unique due to exterior treatments and framing. The glass bridge and opening roof combination to the main entrance foyer also provides an architectural experience that is fitting of the of this coastal location.

Working very closely with the clients, Nathan and his design team were able to realise their vision down to the finest of details: “The clients were entirely engaging from start to finish; being blessed with such accommodating, kind and open-minded clients has made this project a pleasure to work on. All building projects come with

unforeseen challenges, and it’s these that are a true test of a professional working relationship. In this case, despite some tricky problems that would need to be solved, the clients remained focused on their goal of achieving the highest quality family home with supreme architectural interest.”

Discovering a new side of Cornwall with Karen Colam’s immersive tours and detailed local knowledge.

It’s perhaps no accident that the story of long-established tour company, Poldark’s Cornwall, and Owner and Founder Karen Colam, find themselves in this issue of Cornwall Living’s Camel Estuary. Formerly the owner of the famous Rock-based boat company, Cornish Crabbers, Karen followed her move west to Perranporth in 2006 with a spot of research into the back story of Poldark and its true historic roots, a story that had captivated her during its first TV adaptation in the 70s and led to her moving to Cornwall in the 80s.

Now a successful and engaging businesswoman, Karen offers the most indepth tours of the Duchy and wherever appropriate weaves in the history and locations of the Poldark saga to those who have fallen in love with it all over again. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of Cornwall, its history and heritage, coupled with her background in West End theatre make spending time with Karen entertaining as well as fact filled.

For the best all-round experience, guests stay at her award-winning boutique hotel, The Bolenna. Indulge in wonderful local food and soak up the repartee and welcoming atmosphere. An intimate dinner and overnight

stay at The Bolenna followed by a day of touring new and unfamiliar areas of Cornwall with Karen is a fabulous way to unlock more of the Duchy’s secrets. Set in a wildflower meadow away from the hustle and bustle of the beach and seafront of Perranporth, The Bolenna is renowned for it's incredbile food offering. Locals do much to keep this hidden gem a secret, but the word is out there and the food, wines, cocktails and atmosphere is so special that first timers at The Bolenna quickly become regulars. It seems that Perranporth is hot on the heels of the Camel Estuary as a foodie destination, but what it also has is Poldark and someone who really knows her stuff! To book a table or room at The Bolenna, call 01872 572751 or email eat@ thebolenna.com, whilst Poldark’s Cornwall tour information can be found online, via email, or over the phone on 07859 803737.

In high SPIRITS

Another exciting season begins for Cornish Rock Gin, with extra tipples on the horizon and a new home for their distillery.

What began life as an idea dreamed up on a dog walk across Rock beach, saw company founders George and Angie set up Cornish Rock Gin with a single classic gin. Fast forward some five years and Cornish Rock Gin is proud to start the 2023 season with eight wonderful gins, eleven very special rums and more to come later this year. As ever, all of their gins remain sugar free and contain the best and freshest natural ingredients they can source. The rums are very much designed for those with a sweeter tooth and make the most delicious instant cocktails.

In order to continue to keep producing such fabulous products, Cornish Rock Gin is moving to new, much larger premises in Wadebridge. Here, this will not only give them the space and capacity to produce and bottle more of their gins and rums, it will also allow them to have a trade counter plus a retail shop on site, so visitors can come and try their wide selection of tasty gins and rums. Not ones to stand still in terms of pushing the business forward, George and Angie will also be opening a Cornish Rock Gin shop on Fore Street, Tintagel. Discover the new store on the main street that runs the length of the town,

FOODIE 32 | CAMEL ESTUARY

where you can sample the fabulous selection of gin and rum at a full tasting station, with very knowledgeable staff on hand who can help you find that special tipple. You’ll also find them at the Old Post Office, Tintagel, on a Tuesday and Saturday, so whichever side of the street you’re on, you cannot miss them!

However, George and Angie will not be forsaking Bude, where their retail adventure started. The Cornish Rock Gin range will be available every Friday at the Farmers Market and every Wednesday and Saturday at the artisan market opposite the tennis courts. Watch this space, as a shop will be opening in Bude later in the season so gin and rum lovers will be able to visit every day.

One of the latest rums to join the fold is Cornish Perfect Plum. This could be used in a myriad of cocktails and, as the name suggests, it is just perfect on its own. George and Angie suggest serving it simply in a warmed brandy bowl – sit back, sip and enjoy! Another new rum is the Cornish Cinnamon Rock; a spicy rum lover’s dream that's fantastic with either ginger ale or cola, the choice is yours. Now let’s take a look at some of rums that are just perfect for making cocktails. Cornish Tropics Mango and Passionfruit makes an instant porn star martini, simply add a fresh squeeze of passionfruit and top up with either Champagne or prosecco.

Use Cornish Coconut Paradise for a really tasty and refreshing cocktail. Pop some ice into a rum tumbler, add a shot of Coconut Paradise and top up with pineapple juice. This Caribbean-inspired mix of coconut with pineapple is to die for! Another perfect cocktail idea, if you’re in need of an instant margarita, is to salt the rim of a cocktail glass, put in a shot of Cornish Devine Lime with Salted Caramel and top up with Fever Tree Mexican Lime Soda. A sip of this will transport you to South-American heaven!

We hear from George and Angie, as they take a moment out from their busy schedule of new openings: “We have also just launched three commemorative gins to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla, this May. All feature our bespoke illustrative label and come in a patriotic red, white and blue, perfect for a coronation celebration! We hope to see Cornwall Living readers at one of our venues or shows in the coming months. We can’t wait for them to taste our incredible range of gins and rums, and help them to pick the perfect product.”

CONNECTIONS

As Padstow Gallery celebrates its fifth anniversary, it is spreading the joy of art ownership one piece at a time.

If you’ve been lucky enough to meet Padstow Gallery’s founder, Liz Francis, you will know that she is passionate about showcasing the best of British contemporary art and artists: "I take immense pride in sourcing original artwork directly from our treasured selection of artists and makers. Fundamentally, we are about connections; connections to our artists, makers, people and the inspirational environment around us. We are a truly independent art gallery where everything we curate is handmade, from paintings to ceramics, jewellery to linocut prints, and more. I love what I do, the people that I meet, and the artists that I represent.”

Being based in Cornwall has influenced Padstow Gallery's style. The concept of 'edges' and 'boundaries', a celebration of the flora and fauna of the countryside, and the ruggedness of the Cornish coastline, where land meets the sky all inform the curation. "I love it when an artist takes a view and makes it their own. As someone who is not an artist (I can only take credit for the emulsion on the gallery walls!), I am captivated by the entire creative process. It excites me to catch a glimpse of that moment in time through the artist's eyes, just through marks on a canvas or board," says Liz.

While Liz’s talents lay with the vision and curation of the space, she is quick to credit the gallery’s success to the wonderful team of friends who help run the show with her, her amazing customers and, of course, to the incredibly talented artists who continue to support this little venture. “I simply couldn’t do it without everyone, and it is a joy to be celebrating our landmark fifth anniversary after what has been an exceptionally challenging time for all,” concludes Liz.

Cornwall Living readers are invited to join Padstow Gallery’s celebrations, exhibitions and events throughout the year, where guests will be able to meet the makers and enjoy a glass of bubbly or two! Further information can be found on the website or join the gallery’s mailing list for regular email updates. As Liz says, “we hope to see you soon.”

BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL All things

Time spent in and around the beautiful Camel Estuary means different things to different people. For many it’s the chance to escape the pressures of urban living, for others it’s all about the first-class seafood. But for nearly everyone, the area’s beating heart is in its white sands, blue waters, surf culture and abundant wildlife including, if you are very lucky, that magical dolphin sighting.

It is these same things that inspire glass artist Jo Downs, who established her very first gallery in Padstow in 2005. Her work has become synonymous with the Cornish coast, and each year she releases new collections

that reflect her passion for the beauty of the area. For 2023, she has launched a brand-new series of wall panels inspired by the ‘beating heart of Cornwall’; works inspired by gulls on the wing, fish shoals darting through rock pools, rolling waves, samphire and seagrass drifting in the current, golden sands and leaping dolphins.

Alongside these wall-mounted works is her newly launched Cornish Sunset collection of interior pieces, a bright new series inspired by beach walks on a warm spring evening. Beginning with the pure white of Cornish sands, Jo’s palette extends through the dazzling blues of the Atlantic Ocean, to

the golds and flaming reds of a sunset in a clear blue evening sky. “Cornwall offers endless inspiration to artists like me,” says Jo, “and capturing those inspirations in glass is what motivates me. Glass, as a creative medium, is so full of light and colour – it is perfect for expressing the unique beauty of the coastal landscape here. People who love my work love Cornwall, it’s as simple as that.”

One of the collections that people most love is Jo’s iconic Shoaling Fish installations – first inspired by a commission for an architectdesigned home in Padstow – that have graced Jo’s galleries since their launch in 2014. This year she has updated the range with a brand new colourway inspired by north Cornwall’s Harlyn Bay, just a few miles west of the Camel Estuary, reflecting the yellow dunes and blue waters of this lovely beach. The Harlyn colourway is the latest in a series of palettes and designs inspired by the picturesque Padstow coast, including her brightly coloured and ever popular Beach collection, which launched at her Padstow gallery nearly 20 years ago, as well as her Daymer Bay works, and her more subtle collections, which are inspired by the pink sand and soft dune grass of this pretty little beach.

Her Shoaling Fish designs have also developed over the years, from the original wall-mounted works to a spectacular range of multi-piece chandeliers, on show in her galleries and available as private commissions. And, inspired by Cornwall’s most famous sporting culture, this year also sees a new range of wall-mounted glass surfboards, in deep blue lagoon and dazzling sunset colour combinations. “It’s not possible to visit a Cornish beach without seeing a surfer out on the water,” says Jo.

“Not at any time of year, no matter the weather. They are as natural as sunlight on the ocean, and always a beautiful sight!”

In each of Jo’s five Cornish galleries, her big, beautiful wall-mounted works and chandeliers are the backdrop to smaller pieces like jewellery dishes and pretty tealight stands, all with the colours and patterns of the Cornish landscape running through them. “Not everyone has the space for large scale works,” says Jo, “so we always have smaller but equally lovely things on show. I want everyone who comes to my galleries to take home a little something of the Cornish coast.” To that end, Jo has created a range of jewellery, window hangings, individual Shoaling Fish, and new for this year, little glass fish magnets, “so that visitors can pin that Padstow postcard to their fridge, when they are far away and dreaming of Cornwall.”
