am hugely fortunate to call Cornwall my home and in doing so get to experience the Duchy all year round. The wilds of the first months of the year can see storms rage and it's best to hunker down in front of the fire with a good book and watch the waves. Come spring, the Duchy bursts into life with endless fields of early daffodils and woodland glades bursting with bluebells. Through the summer, Cornwall basks in the sun's rays as they kiss the sand and surf creating a heady combination of holiday bliss. So, what of this time of year? This has to be one of my favourite seasons and it's a wonderful time to explore and experience the county's quieter side. This month, Ysy Lees has been exploring some of our favourite winter stays. From chic hotels and coastal boltholes to luxury lodges and family-friendly cottages, turn to page 19 for some winter wonderland escapes. It's not too late to book for 2023, with last-minute bookings and short stays seeing a surge in popularity, a few dream days away in the Duchy could be just a click or a call away! As I write, Black Friday is just around the corner, so we caught up with leading electrical supplier HBH Woolacotts to find out about their high-end TV and HiFi deals launching this month. If you're a film buff or a discerning music lover, be sure to turn to pages 31 and 39 where we showcase some amazing products and deals. No run up to the festive season would be complete without sampling some fine food and drink. Chef patron, Jude Kereama joins us this month (from page 50) with tales of autumn foraging and festive flavours. Christmas at Kota and Kota Kai is served with a little extra spice so, if you fancy some feasting with a difference, be sure to book up! We've also been sipping on some top tipples courtesy of Cornish Rock Gin. Their unique and fun flavours are the ideal addition to any Christmas cocktail cabinet. Turn to page 52 to discover your perfect serve. As the gifting season is also upon us, we've been on the search for a little 'something special' to give your nearest and dearest. For creatives, our art focus from page 57 will inspire and delight; show you care with an exquisite piece of jewellery from Porthleven Jewellery Workshop (page 67); or visit Fowey Christmas Market (page 64) for a seasonal shopping extravaganza featuring some of Cornwall's finest makers & creators. ...happy reading!

Got to

Experience A FAMILY DAY OUT ON TWO WHEELS AT THE NATIONAL TRUST’S LANHYDROCK ESTATE With bikes for all ages available to hire, including those with child seat, tag-along and trailer attachments, the National Trust-owned estate at Lanhydrock is waiting to welcome families hoping to explore its winding woodland trails on two wheels. There are lots of trails to choose from, depending on your ability. The easy Lodge trail, for example, is a 1.5-mile long, well-surfaced route flanked by a mixture of English woodland and conifer trees, suitable for trailers, tag-alongs and disability bikes. Four moderate trails – named Bazley’s, Walter’s, Hard and Timber – prove an exciting test for keen mountain bikers, and The Saw Pit – a dual-slalom track – provides the estate’s most difficult ride. With tightly packed rollers, jumps and banked corners, it features two tracks running side by side, making it the perfect opportunity to race friends and family.

On Monday 2nd October 36 cyclists set off from St Mawes, Cornwall to ride to MontSaint-Michel, France, raising money for healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. Many were taking part in memory of a loved one, including Chris, who explains: “My wife Lesley died in November and spent her last few days at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle where the team were unbelievable. They were really fantastic looking after her and so it means a lot to me to do this with her brother who’s also riding for the charity.” Jane Appleton, Co-Event Director, says: “It was an incredible week of adventure with inspirational people who have blown us away with their determination to not only cycle the 278 miles, but to ensure our hospices are there for those patients and families that need them.” Also cycling alongside the people taking part was Oli Hoare, Co-Event Director: “When we departed from St Mawes this group had

raised an extraordinary £71,000 and as the challenge went on, even more generous donations came in! We can’t wait to see how high the total reaches in the coming weeks. I’d like to add a big thank you to everyone who took part and to all those who’ve supported our amazing cyclists.” For more information call 01726 66868 or visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk

Fishing for wellness, with Tight Lines

A new addition to the Cornish

Josh Portas

wellness scene

In the picturesque embrace of Cornwall, where sea meets land in an awe-inspiring dance, there’s a company on a mission. Tight Lines Community Interest Company (CIC) has been quietly but resolutely casting hope and healing into the hearts of local communities, one line at a time. Tight Lines isn’t your typical angling organisation. Beyond the thrill of the catch, they’ve set their sights on an even more profound reward: mental well-being. Recognising the growing challenges to mental health, they’ve become pioneers in a unique form of therapy: angling. With a backdrop as breathtaking as the Cornish coastline, they’ve created an oasis of calm and connection, helping people find solace and strength amidst the serene waters. Free ‘fishing socials’ and drop-in angling events have seen smiles reappear on faces touched by the trials of life.

Harbour, they’ve cast a network of support that’s proving transformative. But the journey doesn’t end here. Recognising that mental well-being is vital not just in the community, but within the workplace, Tight Lines is pioneering ‘Corporate Wellness Days.’ These events invite Cornish businesses to invest in their employees’ mental health, environmental stewardship, and personal growth. Tight Lines CIC is showing us that the path to wellness can be as simple as a day by the water, surrounded by the beauty of Cornwall, and the caring embrace of a community that understands that sometimes, a little time spent by the shore can reel in a world of wellness.

Spa culture within the UK has long been associated with that of luxury, but across the Nordic regions going to the spa is part of everyday life, with wellness and selfcare a top priority. Owner and Founder of Kernow Springs, Martin Dean, explains: “As a company, we have been providing our alternative outdoor spa solutions across the south west for ten years now and to celebrate we’ve launched our very own Nordic Spa! Our aim is to promote the proven benefits of hot and cold immersion therapies as part of a daily routine right here in Cornwall – a family friendly space, away from screens, as part of the growing community at The Saltbox in Wadebridge.” Complete with reception area, private changing rooms, and hot and cold showers, clients are invited to soak in the huge wood-fired hot tub, plunge into the cold water dip tank, rest in the wood fired sauna, and repeat... Make sure to use code CH8888 for 25% off your first booking! For more information call 07779 374017 or visit www.kernowsprings.co.uk/nordic-spa

Something special for someone special

Klimek Jewellers have some very exciting news for their customers. As they approach their 26th anniversary in Truro, Bettina has decided that it really is time she retired and will be taking a back seat. However, with an Employee Ownership Trust, the three ladies who have been helping Bettina to run the business over the past few years will become the new owners and are wanting to continue to offer all their customers the same expert level of knowledge and service. Bettina will be a Trustee and will still have valuable input. Many people will already know Nicola McKeown who has been with Klimek for over ten years and will take on the role of director of the business. Nicola is a qualified gemmologist, pearl graduate and registered valuer and has a wealth of product knowledge. The new management trio will be completed by Helen Hooper who has been with the company for

five years, and Helen Lee, who joined three years ago from a jewellery business in Wiltshire where she gained many years’ experience. In September, they all attended a jewellery trade show in Italy and are looking forward to showcasing their wonderful new collections which will be ready for Christmas. You will always be assured of a warm welcome at Klimek Jewellers, where you’ll find something for everyone from their comprehensive stock. Falmouth Flooring comes to Truro

When Brett, along with partner Michelle, started the company back in May 2021, he’d already spent many years as a ‘manin-a-van’, fitting flooring for other suppliers in and around the Falmouth area. So, when he decided to branch out on his own it was only natural to begin on home turf. The company progressed and quickly achieved a glowing reputation – Falmouth Flooring was born! They wanted to be able to offer a one-stop service so that support could be offered from start to finish, helping customers plan and achieve their vision. To further this ambition, they branched out into kitchens in 2023, offering a full-measure, design and quotation service. What’s more, they can take on both commercial and domestic contracts. For more information call 01872 713090 or visit www.falmouthflooring.co.uk

t is well known locally that with the colder temperatures comes a sense of peace, quiet and tranquillity here in the Duchy. Our landscape is blanketed in frost and the sunny coastal destination transforms into a winter wonderland of twinkling Christmas lights, roaring waves and sweeping sunsets. For those visiting from afar, it becomes an entirely different yet magical playground waiting to be explored and dotted with the perfect hideaways to escape the chill. I would even argue that Cornwall is more captivating when the defiant cliffs jut onto empty beaches than in the hot heady days of summer. Peacefulness isn’t the only difference winter brings, but also the desire for quick or lastminute escapes to the Duchy. At Cornish Escapes (cornish-escapes.com), the agency has had a wonderful summer of bookings and while it continues with steady stays throughout winter, the company also receives a large number of last-minute reservations. Guests are no longer looking to be tied to week-long stays with Friday or Saturday changeovers, but instead prefer short stays with flexible arrival days which is exactly what Cornish Escapes offers. From romantic getaways in secluded rural cottages to family holidays by the stormy coast, a stay during this season is guaranteed to be relaxing yet adventurous. The team is a group of family-run local experts who offer a personal service and have lived here for over 20 years, providing them with a deep knowledge of Cornwall. They truly believe there is nothing quite like exploring the land during winter to take advantage of the quiet cobbled streets and crisp coastal walks. Of course, there is much more than the beautiful landscape on offer to explore around one of the many properties belonging to Cornish Escapes. Visit galleries such as The Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives without the too-close-for-comfort crowds and stressful travel. If you’re feeling particularly brave, take a dip in the water for a surfing lesson or swim before ending the day by the fire in one of many traditional pubs. If you prefer to stay on land, pull on

your skates for a session on the ice rink at the Eden Project which, despite being a fantastic visit all year round, is particularly festive for families during winter. For an extra touch of magic, don’t forget to say hello to Santa in December when he comes to visit St Ives on the lifeboat. At Old Lanwarnick (oldlanwarnick. oldlanwarnick. co.uk), ), the sentiment remains the same. The team here has also noticed a trend leaning towards more last-minute bookings and shorter stays, suggesting a desire for quick escapes from everyday life. That doesn’t mean that the rest of the year is quiet; despite a few empty cottages during the school-holiday period compared to being fully booked the previous year, Old Lanwarnick has been much busier in spring, summer and autumn than it was in 2022. Overall, 2023 has been

very fruitful for the multi-awardwinning holiday accommodation so far, while the upcoming season offers dog owners the opportunity to explore the land without limitations. Go for a stretch on Tregantle or Lan Sallos beach, then warm up in your hot tub or around the wood burner with a hot drink. If you want to venture a little further, there are a plethora of activities to do within a 15-minute drive of Old Lanwarnick from horse riding and tasting the local cider at Cornish Orchards to visiting Carnglaze Caverns and the Monkey Sanctuary. Make the most of the beautiful wintery wonderland by going on a walk across the South West Coast Path or from your cottage door through the nearby woods and along the river to Looe. With holidaymakers wanting their Cornish holiday to be as easy and hassle-free as possible, Old Lanwarnick has created an electronic guidebook with the aim of having everything you could need within your property from itineraries and suggestions to EV chargers for your electronic car. A hot tub is also to be added to Hob Nob cottage as well as a dog agility course for your four-legged friend, and clay pigeon shooting in the future. Discover more on page 45. For a real taste of warm and welcoming luxury, Penventon Park Hotel (penventon. co.uk) in Redruth combines originality with sophistication. While many come for the picturesque beaches and clear waters of summer, Penventon and the surrounding landscape come into their own in winter. The crisp air and quiet gardens make you feel as though you have Cornwall to yourself. After a busy period of guests making the most of post-lockdown stays, Penventon has steadied back to a more regular season of repeat guests returning to the in-land hotel, impressed by the lively restaurant and bar, Leisure Club, plush interiors and spa treatment rooms. Because

of this location, the hotel is less sunshinedependent and doesn’t face the impact of a milder summer which should reflect into the winter season. Famous for its majestic, crashing waves, it would be an oversight to pass up the opportunity to visit Portreath Beach or immerse yourself in the peaceful birdsong and crunchy leaves of Tehidy Woods during your stay. If the warmth and cosiness of the hotel is irresistible, then indulge in a spa day, an evening of cocktail-making with friends, or a Murder Mystery Dinner in the Grand Ballroom. Penventon has a variety of winter offers, from its best-selling Girls Night In stay with Prosecco, films and face masks to a January Sparkling Stay and Dine to kick the new year off right. Just as Old Lanwarnick is hoping to offer guests everything they could possibly need, the team at Penventon has also noticed the expectation of standards increase over the years and have refurbished its stunning rooms as a result. After noticing a rise in demand for more experience-led holidays and dog-friendly accommodation, Penventon also offers ‘fun dine, not fine dine’ experiences for more informal eating as well as spacious dog-friendly bedrooms where furry friends can stay for free. The future of Penventon promises 2,000 bottles of Cornwall’s largest and finest wine selection and a complete garden restoration, working towards a more sustainable future for guests. Another advocate for greener accommodation is Wooda Farm Holiday Park (wooda.co.uk). Wooda has catered to the sustainable preferences of guests in the last few years by installing solar panels, using lowenergy lightbulbs and sourcing local produce to ensure an environmentally friendly future at the properties. Despite a slight drop in numbers after the post-pandemic boost, it has still had a fantastic year with new visitors discovering the beauty of Bude. With a range

of accommodation to suit all budgets in light of the cost-of-living crisis, the increase in last-minute bookings comes as no surprise when you consider the location. Not only does Bude become more magical during winter but the retreat is within reach of Widemouth Bay, the perfect place to stretch your legs, hot chocolate in hand and lively dog by your side. The seaside town is home to cosy pubs, family-friendly cafés and fine dining restaurants featuring locally caught fish for visiting foodies. Although the campsite closes during the winter, Wooda’s holiday cottages and luxurious eco-lodges remain open all year as the perfect base for an out-of-season escape. This time of year is just as magical if not more mesmerising and full of marvellous memory-making moments as any other season. The picturesque nature of the region, with its stunning landscapes, charming villages, and rich cultural heritage, takes on a special quality during this season that makes it perfect for those seeking unique and tranquil experiences and allows for a slower-paced getaway. Stay entertained in the games room, indoor badminton court, or explore the sheltered Nature Trail before washing off muddy paws in the outside dog shower. et in an incredible location, The Fitzroy is a collection of one, two and three-bedroom apartments with stunning panoramic views of Falmouth Bay and the historic Pendennis Castle. Designed by award-winning architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, The Fitzroy’s design is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional grand hotels, such as The Falmouth Hotel and The Royal Duchy Hotel on Cliff Road. The development rises to five storeys and has floor-to-ceiling glass windows, giving the building a glazed exterior and letting in plenty of natural light.

The Fitzroy features a beautifully furnished communal lounge, landscaped gardens, a guest suite to host your loved ones and a Lifehost on hand five days a week to help when needed. Seaside living is at its finest at The Fitzroy, where residents are able to explore and enjoy the generous grounds' numerous areas for relaxing outdoors and taking in the fresh, Cornish sea air (not to mention the views). The shared lounge is perfect for welcoming guests or catching up with neighbours over a coffee, enjoying the views across Falmouth Bay from the expansive windows.

Now available to reserve off-plan, The Fitzroy comprises 34 stunning apartments, all drenched in natural light and opening out onto spacious balconies where you can gaze out to the Atlantic on a summer’s evening or wave watch from inside. The large kitchens are fitted with ample overhead storage and timber-effect worktops, while the bedrooms all have space for double beds. The modern, part-tiled bathrooms have mirror-fronted cabinets and a spacious walk-in shower. Your home at The Fitzroy will be a blank canvas to make entirely yours, and all homes are pet-friendly for those bringing their fourlegged friends with them. Step outside your apartment to the stunning communal grounds, which were inspired by Falmouth's 19th-century tradition of collecting tropical plants brought back from expeditions overseas. Drawing on this history of seafaring and discovery, the gardens host a variety of coastal and exotic plants, providing a haven for wildlife and a beautiful area to relax amongst nature. Areas of Cornish walling form a series of nooks and crannies with sheltered seating outside for you to bring a book, enjoy the fresh air with a friend or simply sip a coffee in the crisp winter air. Situated on Cornwall's south coast, Falmouth is a bustling town with plenty going on, from local events and festivals to an unending selection of restaurants and pubs offering fine dining and delicious dishes for every taste. There is also a plethora of boutiques, cafés and shops lining Church Street and Market Street for you to peruse including clothing stores, quaint coffee shops and even a cocktail bar or two. The sailing and surfing scene attracts people from all over the UK to the Cornish coast, with beautiful beaches and never-ending waves providing hours of entertainment for those who like to spend time in the water. The town is also renowned for its rich artistic heritage.

Inspired by this stretch of coastline, JMW Turner visited the town in 1811 to capture the distinctive Cornish light in his depictions of Falmouth Harbour (the third deepest natural harbour in the world) and Pendennis Castle, the stunning historical landmark that stands defiantly on the Cornish cliffs. Falmouth's reputation as an artistic and cultural hub continues today, with galleries including Falmouth Art Gallery and the John Dyer Gallery hosting collections of local and international art. The town is the perfect blend of culture and heritage, combining history with a modern flair which all residents of The Fitzroy can enjoy showing off to visiting loved ones. Visitors can even make a weekend of it and utilise the purpose-built guest suite available at The Fitzroy, to make the most of their visit to your new home. With just six homes and one sea-facing apartment remaining to reserve off-plan, The Fitzroy promises to be a vibrant community for those enjoying life over 55 to relax in and spend their time exploring the coast and all it has to offer.

Celebrating SOUND

T

Looking back on another triumph from the south west’s largest independent electrical retailer.

he sixth installment of the Cornwall Hi-Fi Show has now been and gone, organised and hosted by HBH Woolacotts and held on 6th and 7th of October at the Royal Cornwall Showground. As the south west’s largest independent retailer, it’s hardly a surprise that the event was once again a huge success, well received by visitors, customers and exhibitors alike. Arcam’s new range of Radia 2-Channel was a huge standout; announced on 3rd October, the Cornwall Hi-Fi Show was the UK’s first public exhibition of the product. The Radia range succeeds in bringing Arcams award-winning audiophile expertise into a modern and stylish range of separates, at prices that are accessible to everyone including those looking for a reasonably priced but high-quality introduction to true Hi-Fi. Winner of the Adrian Dykes Award, which is presented to the best room at the show as voted for by visitors and HBH Woolacotts staff, Dali and Lyngdorf put on an incredible demonstration to show how traditional Hi-Fi can merge with modern technology to create fantastic-sounding music from the palm of your hand. The Dali Opticon speakers and Lyngdorf Streaming amplifier delivered a sound that many listeners didn’t believe was possible, streamed directly from a mobile phone. The Project Limited Edition ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ turntable was a very late addition, having only been announced the week of the show and the show sample only confirmed

the day before! A completely unique and one-off turntable that pays homage to the hugely popular album, it was truly a work of art and was very well received. Naim, making its first appearance at the show, was a huge positive in itself. Having been requested by visitors ever since the first show, HBH Woolacotts and Naim recently agreed a new trading partnership and it was great to have such a well-respected British brand at the show. Last but by no means least, the new range of Sony TVs was also a real winner; having only been launched recently, the brand-new A95L Master Series QD-OLED was on display in both the 55” and 77” versions, and the picture quality really does have to be seen to be believed. Despite the event being the pinnacle of Premium Audio in the south west, HBH Woolacotts stocks and works with these brands all year round. Premium audio spaces in Wadebridge, St Austell and Plymouth allow you to view, play with and listen to a huge range of products in a quiet and comfortable setting, with true experts in the industry on hand and ready to help.

THE PUZZLE We discover how a 200-year-old monkey puzzle tree from the Menabilly Estate is creating heirlooms for the future.

M

enabilly, on Cornwall’s south coast, has been the seat of the Rashleigh family since the 16th century. In more recent times, the house and its grounds became known for their connection with the acclaimed writer Daphne Du Maurier who lived there for 25 years from 1943. Graham Hawken, founder of Rustic House with his daughter Emily, continues the tale: “I am very fortunate to have been a longterm tenant on the Rashleigh Estate and privileged to have been allowed to walk in its extensive woods. The Rashleigh family were some of the foremost plantsman and collectors in the south west and there are tree specimens in the woods at Menabilly which are simply incredible. “One in particular always caught my eye; a mature monkey puzzle, or Araucaria araucana to give it its botanical name – a species very dear to my heart as I used to travel a lot to Chile where it’s the national tree. They take centuries to reach maturity and a few years ago this particular tree came down in a storm. Having been in the timber industry all my life, I knew this was a rare find and came to an agreement with Sir Richard to purchase the timber.”

The very top and bottom of the tree was sawn into rings while the remainder was cut longitudinally, giving unusually wide, long planks – some of up to four meters in length. “These are perfect for making beautifully tactile, live-edge tables, seating up to 12,” adds Graham, “unique in that they are made from a singular length. The monkey puzzle timber is available for bespoke commissions; we have selection of example pieces to view in our showroom including a spectacular hand-crafted, four-meter-long dining table.” Each piece of this amazing furniture is rooted in Cornish history and holds a unique literary connection. To discuss a commission, contact Emily Birtwhistle at emily@patio-furniture.co.uk.

PATTERNS Transform your home by making bold or simple statements with your selection of flooring.

N

ever have there been so many options available when it comes to raising the appearance of the rooms in your house than now. And that’s before you even get round to choosing the furniture! Looking at the flooring market in 2023 you’ll find a plethora of suppliers and products to excite, but also possibly leaving you a little overwhelmed with the sheer amount of choices available. However, help is never far away. Here at Cornwall Living we’ve been busy investigating the options and ways to make the most of your budget and vision. One company that has consistently satisfied expectations is South West Carpets in Newquay. A benchmark brand for the team is Amtico – founded in 1964 it has been striving to be the UK market leader in luxury vinyl flooring ever since; always innovating, always creatively de rigueur. One of the latest ideas to come from the brand, now successfully put into practice, is giving customers the option to mix up different laying patterns. By doing so, you can really transform a room, making your home unique and personal. Whether it be a small bathroom or the whole of the downstairs of a house, utilising the space and giving it that special feel can really say something about you. Be creative by introducing design strips between tiles, such as broken bond laying or shipping deck and even parquet. Amtico has

recently launched new patterns within its Décor and Signature range to help you release your inner designer. And what’s really good news for the homeowner here, is that between the ranges there is a uniform level of thickness, meaning you can maintain the flow from room-to-room, in the same colour but with a different laying pattern. To get those creative thoughts flowing, here are a few of your laying options; large parquet, herring bone plank, herringbone tile, Versailles parquet, strip-wood, boardwalk, wicket plank, basket weave, pave stone, hex, broken bond, uniform block, gable parquet small, castle weave, keystone small, arc small, the list goes on! GreenGenUK’s Neil Rollinson explains why now is the perfect time to replace our heating systems.

W

hile energy prices are still an uncertainty for many of us, the switch to air-source heating seems to be on the rise. We speak with Neil Rollinson of GreenGenUK to find out why there is no better time than now to make the change, following recent changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). The scheme, which provides a subsidy for heat pump installations, has just increased the grant by 50%, just in time for winter, as Neil explains: "The announcement that the BUS is being increased from £5,000 to £7,500 is great news for customers and the industry. The increased voucher amounts really bring the costs of installing an air-source heat pump in line with the costs of installing oil or gas. With lower running costs, lower carbon emissions and a comfier way of heating your home, it's hard to argue against installing a heat pump now." The BUS offers a £7,500 lump sum towards the cost of installation, providing up-front funding to homeowners looking to install renewable heating. Air-source heat pumps completely replace the original system, supplying all of a property’s heating and hot water. When running with radiators, modern heat pumps installed by GreenGenUK achieve in excess of 400% efficiency. This makes them very

affordable to run while creating a carbon saving of several tonnes a year. On top of this, your property will avoid high and low temperatures while creating a more comfortable living environment that is better for its fabric. Neil, who’s worked with GreenGenUK for over a decade, explains: “As far as renewable subsidies go, the BUS scheme is one of the easiest to access. You need to install through an MCS-approved company (like us) but most homes will meet the scheme's criteria without any changes. GreenGenUK deals with the applications on behalf of our customers and the £7,500 is deducted from the customer's costs. We offer free advice on all of this and quotes to match. For anybody whose heating system needs replacing or modernising, or for anyone building their own home, air-source heating could now be the most cost-effective heating system to install.

The five-star luxury self-catered holiday cottages are a home away from home for humans and pets alike, and ideally located a few miles from the beach and popular destinations such as Looe, Polperro and Fowey, and a half-hour drive from the Eden Project. Lovingly converted, the six cottages have stood on this site for hundreds of years, each full of history with stunning original features such as vaulted ceilings and flagstone floors, as well as the more modern addition of EV chargers. Today, they provide families, couples and groups just like you the chance to get away from the stresses of everyday life and enjoy some much-needed pampering while on holiday in Cornwall. he Lizard Peninsula is at its most rugged and elemental at this time of year, offering endless views of wild and untamed storms rolling in across the Atlantic. After a crisp coastal adventure in the cool winter sunshine, you may well find yourself drawn to indulge in some of the best food and drink the county has to offer, and the Polurrian on the Lizard is home to just that. Where a getaway means making the most of the coast, here you can step out on the coast path before retreating to ringside seats in Polurrian’s Vista Lounge for some truly captivating ocean views. Between storm watching and peaceful contemplation in front of calm waters, the southwest-facing aspect makes this an ideal spot for soaking up spectacular sunsets too. The milder Cornish climate brings surprising contrasts of its own, with camellias often bursting into bloom in December and daffodils peeping out soon after the New Year. The bird life is plentiful too, from guillemots, peregrines and the Cornish chough to murmurations of starlings taking to the sky at dawn and dusk. On calmer days, stroll across deserted beaches enveloped in low sunlight, the perfect place for snapping dramatic shots of the expansive coastal landscape. The view is just as captivating at night too; the lack of light pollution in this untrammelled pocket of the

country makes for some remarkable star gazing. Back at the hotel, swim, gym, or simply soothe away any stress with a pampering Elemis treatment in the Health Club. Further nourishment can be found from the tempting dishes being served in the Vista Lounge and Restaurant. Enjoy a selection of Mediterranean-inspired cooking to transport the palate to warmer climes while the dining experience remains rooted firmly within the Duchy with its 20-mile menu. Alternatively, enjoy an afternoon tea for every taste; whether you prefer sweet, savoury, or vegan treats accompanied by cocktails or mocktails there is something for everyone. Afterward, retreat to the comfiest of beds and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wind and waves crashing against the shore outside.

specially now, after a frantic summer, a rejuvenating spa break by the sea – breathing in the fresh ocean air and seeking solace from the luxurious comfort of sub-tropical gardens – probably seems like a prospect too good to be true. Then again, why should it be? At St Michaels Resort, you can tuck yourself away from the hustle and bustle and hide from the incoming autumn chill in the south west’s largest Hydrotherapy pool – heated to a cosy 35°C. Other enticing facilities include an outdoor barrel sauna, the world’s only Cornish sea-salt steam room, and a 12-seater hot tub with views across Falmouth Bay. Ease away from those familiar aches and pains as you relax amongst the bubbles of a Hydrotherapy Experience, before strolling to the Garden Kitchen or the Brasserie on the Bay restaurant for a relaxed dining experience overlooking Falmouth’s seaside gem, Gyllyngvase beach. Enjoy a decadent and delicious meal to nourish your body after a relaxing spa session, before heading back out to the spa and spa gardens for some well-earned rest and recuperation. At St Michaels, you can immerse yourself in the changing seasons. Revel in the serene beauty that autumn offers, inhale the salty

sea breeze of Cornwall’s wild shores, and watch as the colours of the sub-tropical gardens fade from vibrant greens to warm golden hues. Whilst you’re there, explore an impressive selection of treatments and offers in the luxurious spa. Each treatment is tailored to suit the individual for a bespoke experience. Pamper yourself with a soothing and revitalising facial, release the tension with a full-body massage, or drift into a meditative state with a scalp massage provided by a team of expert therapists. Can’t bear to leave? Then why not complete your experience with a short stay? St Michaels’ new Spa Garden Lodges offer uninterrupted privacy, allowing you to hide away in the sub-tropical gardens and enjoy a cosy evening nestled next to the woodburner. You might even decide to walk the short distance to the beach and enjoy a twilight swim.

inter WCOMFORTS Words by Jude Kereama

With a view that every season is exciting and new, Jude Kereama takes us through his plans for the coming season.

W

hen the autumn and winter season comes around and the battle to keep the central heating off as long as we can is lost, we start thinking about what changes we have to make to our menus. As it gets colder, we are looking for the food to be a little bit more warming and comforting to see us through the winter months. At home I love to make hearty stews, chowders, roasting joints, pies, ragus, soups, meatloafs, curries, bolognese (I can eat this even in summer), lasagne, tarte tatin, poached pears, crumbles, strudels, sticky toffee pudding, game – just to name a few things that I love to cook at this time of the year. We all seem to crave warmer, richer foods that stave off the winter months, and there’s nothing more comforting than a roaring fire while outside the winter storms come blowing into Porthleven and we have a big warming dinner on the table to share.

Jude Kereama

There’s obviously a change in the ingredients available too. At the moment we have lots of squashes, brassicas and root vegetables coming from our organic farms. The game season has started, and oysters are at their prime as well as mussels and other shellfish. Mushrooms are also plentiful, bringing their wonderfully rich flavours to our dishes, and I love autumn and winter lamb and venison. Autumn foraging is in full swing and we will try and pickle, freeze and dehydrate as much as we possibly can to get us through the darkest of months, with jars full of ingredients fermenting on the shelves too. Our December menu at Kota will encompass a lot of Christmas flavours within our incoming tasting menu. As always, the menu will be about the best ingredients at the time; every course will be a take on a dish you may have on the Christmas dinner table but twisted into something new. Even the mince pies have been tarted up with a grate of Yuzu (a Japanese citrus), ginger and a miso, Japanese whiskey butter. It was a pie I created for Kirsty Allsop’s Christmas Show that went down a treat. The wine list will encompass a few wines that will be warming as well as being picked to match every course, and you can expect some top cocktails too.

At Kota Kai, we have a three-course Christmas menu which is also a bit funkier than the usual stuff available for December. Most importantly, we have a roast turkey that will rival the best with all the trimmings, with the other dishes typically given a bit of Asian treatment, but are equally seasonal. We will also be serving mulled cider and warming our cocktail list up a touch with a little Christmas spice. The wine list will be warmer too with a few extra reds and some big whites coming on board. Kota Kai is a great place for a fun atmosphere and a Christmas party, so don’t forget to check out the Christmas menus online. We also have wreath-making classes and our ever-popular Asian Nights starting in November. Asian Nights have been a really fun night to come and dine at Kota Kai as each week we cook food from different countries around Asia. We are also looking to add Cobra beer to our offerings which is a fantastic beer to go with all Asian food, which I am very excited about. As usual booking is essential to avoid disappointment, we hope to see you over the next couple of months!

P

hew!! As the busy summer season draws to an end, the Cornish Rock Gin distillery and shop is now on a mission to carefully create enough of their much sought-after beverages for their Christmas adventures. Never ones to let the grass grow under their feet, the team are always on the look-out to expand their operation as well as enhancing their customer’s experience, which is why they’re adding three new rums into the mix – it’s going to be a busy few weeks! First up is Banana Blast, a lightly spiced concoction – this will be a definite favourite

with banana lovers. The second addition is Rhubarb & Ginger Twist, offering the discerning imbiber a fabulous sharp flavour ending with a wonderful, sweet aftertaste that incorporates a generous hint of ginger. Then, having taken note of many requests and to finalise the new releases, is the 57% strength white rum; a genuine, full-on, Navy-strength spirit called True Taste. All three are set to be on the shelves in abundance ready for Christmas. As if this wasn’t enough, beyond manning three shops in Wadebridge, Tintagel and Bude, the team will be preparing to attend a plethora of Christmas markets this season, which is good news for those who wish to sample the new offerings and stock up in time for the festive season. The first of these kicks off on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of December at West Point in Exeter, a multi-purpose indoor

glamorous glassware plus gift packs and hampers, the choice really is yours to make. Into the heart of the river

Internationally acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson spent the last few years immersing himself in the elements on a beautiful, diverse and richly rewarding journey to create his latest series of paintings for the stunning new exhibition, The Fowey.

A handmade Cornish Christmas If you’re planning a visit to the ever-popular Made in Cornwall Christmas Fair at Truro Cathedral this December, you’re sure to encounter an incredible array of talented crafters and makers, one of which will be Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles. From Friday 1st to Saturday 2nd December, 10am to 5pm, Mel will once more present her impressive work as one of the only tile makers whose work is authenticated as an official Cornish product by Trading Standards. The quality of her work speaks for itself, having recently won the Best Hand-Crafted Tile Company at the SME Enterprise Awards for extensive expertise and skill, dedication to customer service and client satisfaction with an on-going commitment to excellence and innovation. What makes this achievement even more impressive, is having won it four years running! Cornish-

made and exquisitely hand-carved, Mel uses ancient 13th century inlay techniques so that each tile is individually hand carved as opposed to painted, creating beautiful images held eternal in earth and time, while keeping the techniques used centuries ago alive in today’s art. This Christmas, alongside her already impressive collection, Mel is offering beautiful bespoke Christmas decorations, a token of the festive period with a sentimental touch. Choose your favourite colour and style, add a name and Mel will create a unique bauble for your Christmas tree. Each piece takes two weeks to make, so book early to avoid disappointment! For more information email info@melchambers.com or visit www.alchemytiles.com

“Rivers are places we find emotive,” Jackson says, “they carry our memories, feelings and histories. Maybe more importantly, they are on the front line of the environmental and climate crisis.” To quote the environmental journalist George Monbiot, “Through Kurt Jackson’s stunning and gorgeous paintings, we derive a sense of what rivers once were and can be again. We can feel the flow and power of these magnificent living systems, their latent force and demand for freedom, the hint of what they want to be.” Kurt Jackson’s The Fowey will run until February at the multi-award-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just. Emily aims to challenge people to find light and positivity in the dark and is particularly inspired by views of life as a cycle rather than a linear journey. No end. Just beginnings. Bonnie, based near Porthleven, takes inspiration from the beautiful coastlines of west Cornwall. Her work resembles an oil painting, although it’s made up of layered plastic waste, fishing gear, wrappers etc; all washed ashore to create intricate collages that depict the location. BRINGING BACK THE Santa’s Grotto returns for another special Christmas at Trevena Cross Garden Centre.

...we just hope we can live up to, or better still, exceed visitor expectations and memories of the Grotto!

F

or the first time since 2019, the locally renowned and magical Trevena Cross Santa’s Grotto is back at Trevena Cross. A visit to the grotto in December had become a Christmas tradition for many families across west Cornwall before the COVID pandemic hit, and only now are the team at Trevena Cross in a position to re-introduce this popular community attraction, having adapted their festive plans for the past few years. Garden Centre Manager Nick Hann explains: “We have tried our best to harness the Christmas spirit at Trevena Cross over the past few years, ensuring that there has still been something for families, with free festive photo opportunities, lots of snow and even a glimpse of Santa last year. This year however, we are excited to bring back something we know has been missed amongst our visitors – our Santa’s Grotto! Building it from scratch, we are investing a lot of time, money and spirit into its creation and we just hope we can live up to, or better still, exceed visitor expectations and memories of the grotto!” Trevena Cross will re-establish its partnership with the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard to host the grotto over the first three weekends of December and the 20th to the 23rd of

magic

December. In return, it will make a sizeable donation to the club for its own nominated charities. Complementing the magical grotto, which will need to be pre-booked online (visit trevenacross.co.uk), will be an undercover 25-stall food and craft market on the first three weekends of December, combining delicious produce and locally made traditional and contemporary gifts and crafts. If you can’t wait until December, beautiful lights and decorations will inspire your festive senses following the seasonal transformation in the shop at Trevena Cross, plus an eclectic range of gifts are ready to kickstart your Christmas shopping. Outside, a huge selection of UK cut and pot-grown Christmas trees will descend on Trevena Cross between the middle and end of November, including the popular £25 non-drop Nordmann Fir (up to six feet tall).

TREASURES

Explore a trove of new designs, reimagined pieces and handmade jewellery.

P

orthleven Jewellery Workshop has been busy working on new designs and with Christmas around the corner there is no better time to take a look at its beautiful wares. The shop, nestled in the heart of Porthleven overlooking the iconic harbour, not only has a range of beautiful new designs but a plethora of second-hand jewellery in stock which still looks brand new. By purchasing a piece of second-hand jewellery, you are not only helping to give the piece a new lease of life, you are also getting a lot more for your money. Choose from gold rings set with precious stones and bracelets, to bangles, earrings and much more, as a treat for yourself or the jewellery lover in your life. The talented team at Porthleven Jewellery Workshop even make opal necklaces in their workshop on-site. If you are looking for smaller stocking fillers, there are also plenty of stunning silver pieces on offer starting from as little as £5. In addition to necklaces, bracelets and earrings, browse a range of German-built watches from Bauhaus, Zeppelin and Iron Annie, including both quartz and automatic movements. Instead of a new piece of jewellery, why not surprise a loved one by taking a treasured piece of theirs to the workshop for a repair or redesign? The business is established not only as a reputable team of jewellers with reasonable prices but also with a quick turnaround for repairs. Its speciality is to utilise customers’

old, unworn, dated gold jewellery and redesign it, converting it into something completely different and contemporary to treasure for many generations to come. Porthleven Jewellery Workshop is run by Paul and Clair Pennington and they pride themselves on being a proper family-run business with both of their children working in the workshop and the jewellery shop itself. The future of the pieces on offer here looks bright; their son David has even decided to take on the trade and become a goldsmith. He has been producing lovely pieces for the last three years now, continuously coming up with new ideas and designs for lucky customers.

CARING FOR At Cornwall Medical Group, exemplary patient care is at the forefront of its services.

P

robus Surgical Centre has been providing NHS specialist day-case surgery under local anaesthetic in a primary healthcare setting since 1995 and is the foundation of the private practice, Cornwall Medical Group (CMG). CMG prides itself on ensuring you receive the best treatment and care at every step of your journey, with an outstanding team of surgeons, doctors, nurses and patient coordinators. Here, the team understands the importance of getting yourself back on track and living a pain-free life; at Probus Surgical Centre you can have procedures from ganglion cyst removal to cataract surgery as well as cosmetic appointments in a safe and friendly environment. Recently, Probus GP Surgery and Probus Surgical Centre have built an extension to their flagship site in Probus. The Lowenna Wing will allow the GP Practice, Surgical Centre and CMG to provide even more healthcare services, including a new community pharmacy. The Probus Group model is a true blueprint for the level of care that every patient deserves, which is reflected in recent patient satisfaction results, with Probus Surgical Centre averaging over 99% in its post-operative surveys. Quality of service, as evidenced by its outstanding accolades, is second to none at CMG. Probus Surgical Centre is justly proud to be a leader in the south west when it

comes to ophthalmology, housing innovative ophthalmic equipment in modern and well-equipped operating theatres. These are complimented by single-occupancy recovery rooms and a luxurious post-operative rest room where you can recover in peace. Be seen quickly and sit back knowing you are in safe, professional hands with your private or NHS treatment. Probus Surgical Centre carries out over 6,000 NHS procedures every year alone. More important than any piece of equipment is the team of staff waiting to take care of you. They are dedicated to ensuring you have the best possible outcome to your treatment and do everything with a smile, putting you at ease at a time that can often be worrying. Whether you're after minor cosmetic or aesthetic procedures, solutions to joint pains, medicated weight management or surgical procedures, Probus Surgical Centre with CMG will put you at the very centre of its care ethos.

SMILE WITH If you think your smile is missing something, then dental implants could be the answer.

Through every step of the procedure, I found everyone involved to be professional, efficient, extremely caring and just good fun.

W

e all know the importance of feeling confident in our smile, but sometimes the most microscopic of blemishes can feel like glaring flaws. When it comes to replacing teeth that are missing or not working properly there are several options to consider, however, one option in particular stands out above the rest. For many people dental implants are a popular, long-term solution that have not only restored numerous smiles, but boosted confidence and improved quality of life, offering benefits that other replacements like dentures or bridges simply can’t. Whether you want to replace a single tooth or a complete smile, one of Portman Dental Care’s clinics in Launceston, Truro, St Austell, Wadebridge, or Carbis Bay can help. Mike, one of the clinic’s clients, explains: “My treatment and welcome was outstanding from my initial consultation. Through every step of the procedure, I found everyone involved to be professional, efficient, extremely caring and just good fun. I am delighted with the results and the follow-up care.” Unlike removable dentures, an implant is placed into the jaw, the bone growing around it to create a stable base. Topped with a crown (false tooth) that’s matched to the shade, shape and size of your remaining teeth, dental implants are a natural-looking and comfortable

solution to get your teeth back to looking beautiful. Another of Portman Dental Care’s recent clients, Carol, says: “I am now on my third implant; the first two are perfect and it’s great not to have the big gaps between my teeth anymore.” As long as they’re cared for properly and checked regularly, implants can potentially be a lifelong solution, meaning you also don’t need to worry about removing them to eat or sleep. Dental implants stimulate the jaw just like natural teeth, preventing the jawbone from shrinking which is a common occurrence after losing a tooth. They can also restore your bite and allow you to chew properly, so you will never have to miss out on enjoying your favourite food again. Unlike some alternative treatments, dental implants are less likely to compromise the health of your other teeth. While it all might sound just too good to be true, the friendly team at Portman Dental Care are on hand to answer any questions and guide you through your journey back to a confident smile.

ith views of Mount's Bay, Land’s End and the Isles of Scilly on a clear day, Bartinney Nature Reserve consists of Bartinney Hill and the surrounding heathland and patchwork farmland that Cornwall Wildlife Trust has acquired since the 1990s. Bartinney Castle, at the summit of the hill, is an Iron Age enclosure surrounded by remains of ancient field systems, settlements and a circular structure believed to be an amphitheatre of sorts. The site’s earliest structures are thought to date from the Bronze Age. The name Bartinney (or Bartinè) means ‘the lighted eminence’, or ‘the hill of fires’ (Bretanow in the Cornish language). At the start of August 2023, Cornwall Wildlife Trust launched an appeal to raise the funds to secure an additional 53 acres of land neighbouring the nature reserve, to create more space for wildlife. The appeal was a success and thanks to the generosity of Cornish businesses and members of the public, the proposed area of lowland heathland, a habitat rarer than tropical rainforests, has now been added to the site ready to be restored and protected. It will become a vibrant habitat for many species including nightjars, grayling butterflies, adders and numerous bees. Bartinney Nature Reserve supports many of Cornwall’s rare and threatened wildlife species. These include

the Tormentil nomad bee, one of the UK’s rarest bees, only recorded at 12 sites around the UK. Plenty of wildlife can be spotted at the reserve during the winter months. The short-eared owl, unusual amongst owls as it prefers to be out and about during the day, is usually seen here in winter as it escapes the colder temperatures of northern England, Scotland, Scandinavia and beyond. Measuring around 35 to 42cm in length, this owl is mottled yellowy-brown above, paler underneath, and has dark circles around its yellow eyes. As with all owls, a group of this species is known as a ‘parliament’. Other special birds to spot at this time of year include snipe and woodcock. It's a great place for a walk and for spotting such amazing creatures. If you're planning a visit with furry friends, please ensure your dog is under close control.
