PROUD TO BE PART OF
Welcome
From the Editor
to the Autumn edition of Cornwall Living!
As the heady days of summer turn to the mellow fruitfulness of autumn, now is a great time to enjoy the county in a more peaceful guise. The summer throngs have dissipated back to school, leaving empty beaches and quiet clifftops. The intense heat of the summer sun turns to a gentler warmth, perfect for dog walking or gentle strolls through the winding streets of one of Cornwall's towns. With that in mind, this month's cover feature (from page 23) and our retail special feature (page 73) look at some great places to shop across the Duchy. While some high streets might be struggling, Cornwall's independent businesses have learned to be agile over the years, meaning there are many boutiques, galleries, emporiums and markets just waiting to be discovered.
A trip into town is also an excellent excuse for sampling some fine food. The Falmouth Hotel's Sunday roasts are a must (page 66), and after a walk browsing Falmouth's streets, why not reward yourself with a hearty lunch by the bay? Or, if you happen to be in the harbour town of Porthleven, which boasts a plethora of unique shops and galleries including the ever-popular Porthleven Jewellery Workshop (page 75), be sure to book a table at Kota or its sister restaurant Kota Kai (from page 70) for some much-needed sustenance.
If your walls are in need of some artwork then this issue we are delighted to showcase some exquisite Cornish art. From page 82 we visit Penwith Gallery, St Ives and Atishoo Gallery, St Austell, as well as meeting renowned artists Kurt Jackson, Emily Penfold and Steve Slimm. Their work is as diverse as it is beautiful and means that wherever you are in the country, or indeed the world, you can have your very own artwork to remind you of Cornwall.
We are once again looking forward to visiting the Cornwall Home Improvement and Self Build Show that will take place over the weekend of the 7th and 8th of October at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge (from page 31). Showcasing everything you might need for your self-build venture, including renewables, interiors and gardens, there will be qualified and experienced experts from all sectors of the home-improvement industry on-hand to answer your questions and hopefully provide the solutions you need to ensure your dream project completes on time and on budget! With the addition of a separate Homeware Market and Food and Drink Market, not only can you sample some delicious food and drink, you can also take some gorgeous Cornish lifestyle products home with you.
...happy reading!

Perfect perennials for your planting plans
This summer saw an explosion of colour at Trevena Cross with the greatest display of perennials the centre has ever seen, all grown on site in its 35-acre nursery. They came into beautiful bloom thanks to the dedicated team at Trevena Cross who worked hard to create colour-coordinated displays that showcased not only the variety of perennials available but how they worked in combination. If this has inspired you to think about planting your own at home, there is no better time than right now.
Owner of Trevena Cross, Graham Jeffery explains: “Autumn is perfect planting time –showers begin to moisten the warm summer soil and provide perfect conditions for new roots to become established by next spring. It’s a great time for planting trees, shrubs

The days may be getting shorter, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend less time in your garden. In fact, the changing seasons give the gardeners among us plenty of fresh jobs to do, from clearing weeds and debris to fertilising planting areas. Afterwards, sit back to admire the transformative effect the new season has had on your outdoor landscape.

Pup season at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary
With pup season on our doorstep, staff at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary are prepping their hospital, ready for another busy winter! Last year, the marine rescue charity based in Gweek, near Helston, treated 50 grey seal pups with an incredible 86% release rate. This year, the team are expecting just as many, if not more pups, to arrive at the sanctuary throughout the season, which normally runs from September to March. On average, it costs the charity £3,000 to put a pup through its rescue, rehabilitation and release programme, which includes everything from vet bills to food supplies and equipment. Funds from every visit to the sanctuary go towards funding this vital conservation work, ensuring our Cornish grey seal population remains strong and healthy. If you can’t come and visit the sanctuary in

person, you can donate via their website to help support them in their mission to rescue these pups. If you see a seal pup on the beach, beachgoers are advised to keep dogs on leads and children away. Do not approach the seal or try to chase it back into the sea if it is stranded. Make sure you get in touch with the Cornish Seal Sanctuary or call the British Divers Marine Life Rescue on 01825 765546 if you think a pup is in trouble.

Staying sustainable this September
This month Cornwall Hospice Care have launched ‘Sustainable September’, to get the people of Cornwall thinking about how they shop. It’s not just about promoting the environmental benefits of shopping second hand either! The charity will explore repairing, restyling and repurposing fashion and furniture with handy tips and videos being shared across their website, social media and in store. Get involved through their recreate challenge! Cornwall Hospice Care will be giving away materials of unsaleable donations in all 30 of their shops and inviting you to get creative by following three steps.
Firstly, collect your textiles or paper from your nearest Cornwall Hospice Care Shop. Then create something useful, beautiful or fun! Lastly, share it by tagging @chcshops on Facebook and Instagram. Head of Retail at Cornwall Hospice Care, Frazer Hopkins, explains: “We are, by our very nature, a big recycler of fashion and furniture here in

Cornwall as we offer the opportunity for people to both purchase and donate second hand items. Every year we sell over 1 million items, offering each a chance at a second life and potentially diverting from landfill.” He continues: “We are striving for more with sustainability being recently introduced as one of our charity’s core ambitions and we are constantly working towards improving our practices in realistic ways. We are very excited about our Sustainable September campaign as a chance to communicate our commitment with the people of Cornwall. We hope generations from Bude to Penzance will get involved.”

Getting out of town, with Slickers Dog House
As restrictions lift on our favourite local beaches for our doggy friends, now that summer is drawing to a close, autumn adventure is calling out to us. It’s times like this that many of us turn to brands like Slickers to get our furry best friends kitted out for a summer of fun, but as we all know, popular destinations like Padstow come with busy streets and crowds of other like-minded adventure seekers.
Based in the heart of Padstow, the Slickers team know that avoiding the squeeze in small Cornish towns like this, especially with your pooch in tow, is something that many of us doggy-owners will bear in mind. This year, Slickers is delighted to announce the opening of its brand-new ‘Out of Town’ store!
The essence of Cornwall at Camelot Castle
Tucked away from the crowds of Padstow itself in a nearby industrial estate, Slickers Out of Town is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, so you can access everything Slickers has to offer without having to deal with the Padstow crowds, not to mention the parking!
So, why not head over to Slickers Out of Town, Unit 4F, Trecerus Industrial Estate, Padstow PL28 8RW for all your doggy essentials, and maybe the odd extra special treat from the ever-expanding range?
For more information email admin@slickersdoghouse.co.uk or visit www.slickersdoghouse.co.uk
The Camelot Castle Hotel is situated overlooking stunning views of Tintagel and has a commanding presence itself, sat above the rugged Cornish clifftops. Perfect for short stays, the Victorian castle has a variety of stunning rooms to suit all visitors in addition to its Golden Age bar and restaurant.
In honour of the beloved British tradition of ‘a cup of tea’ the hotel offers an abundance of freshly baked scones and delectable cakes as part of their famous afternoon tea. This, alongside lunch and coffee, can be enjoyed in the Explorer’s Tea Room and with the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, it truly is infused with Cornish magic.

When it comes to high streets, Cornwall has some fantastic ones. Beyond its breathtaking beaches and historic landmarks, the Duchy also offers some excellent shopping experiences. Shopping local and supporting independent businesses not only benefits the retailer but also means that your purchases hold more meaning. From bustling markets to artisan boutiques and local merchants and makers to shops selling home essentials, join us as we embark on a journey through Cornwall's best shopping towns, where retail therapy abounds.
Where better to start than Cornwall’s cathedral city? Truro blends urban sophistication with Cornish charm. Its majestic centrepiece, Truro Cathedral, overlooks a shopping scene that's a delightful mix of independent stores and specialty boutiques. The pannier market, dating back to the 19th century, offers a traditional market experience with stalls selling everything from fresh produce to antiques. Truro's Lemon Street Market is a hidden gem for artisanal crafts, Scandi-inspired homewares and gorgeous clothing, while its ever-popular farmer's market on Lemon Quay offers an array of Cornish produce in the heart of the city.
It's also well worth driving the few extra miles to nearby St Austell where you’ll find Griggs Country Store (magrigg.co.uk). Discover more on page 77. This incredible emporium is a veritable treasure trove and also boasts a fabulous restaurant so you can refuel after your retail spree. HBH Woolacotts (hbh-woolacotts.co.uk), one of Cornwall’s leading electrical retailers also has a superstore in St Austell, so if you’re in need of a new appliance this couldn’t be more convenient.
Known for its nautical heritage, and in more recent times as a thriving university town, Falmouth’s streets are lined with an array of independent boutiques, art galleries, and craft shops. The town's vibrant arts scene is
showcased in galleries such as the Falmouth Art Gallery, while the Falmouth Arts Centre offers an exciting program of exhibitions and workshops. Falmouth’s weekly Market on The Moor – which is held every Thursday and Saturday from March to December – is well worth a visit as is the Tuesday farmers market. At the other end of town, on Discovery Quay, just in front of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall, you’ll find Discovery Market on most Fridays, where independent traders come together for a plastic-free collection of food, drink and craft stalls. One of our favourite streets for a mooch is the old High Street. Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of boutiques, homeware and lifestyle shops –The Grey Lurcher is a must-visit – and cafés lining the steep street, which also gives way to hidden courtyards, housing more retail gems.

At the heart of the town, Wow Cornwall
From south coast to north, the Camel Estuary has some surprising retail finds. Wadebridge itself is a flourishing town, which enchants with its riverside tranquillity and diverse retail scene. The town's independent shops have a variety of offerings, from fashion and interiors to artisanal food and drink, showcasing the region's creative spirit. At the heart of the town, Wow Cornwall (wowcornwall.co.uk) offers a wide range of home styles, carefully chosen and with sustainability always in mind. Out-of-town shopping comes courtesy of Hawksfield where an enviable collection of like-minded businesses offer retail therapy for those who prefer their shopping experience to be a little calmer. Just off the Atlantic Highway, home accessories, fashion, beauty and gifts can all be found in the tranquil surroundings of Jo & Co Home (joandcohome.com). Stock up on artisan treats from The Arc or grab a coffee from Strong Adolfos before visiting Finisterre’s outlet store for a fashion fix. Or, keep the petrol head in your life happy by looking at the rare, retro and exotic vehicles at Bespoke Traders.
No shopping trip to the north coast should be without a visit to Padstow. Perhaps more famed as a culinary haven, it also some fabulous boutique finds. Wander the winding streets to discover charming boutiques and galleries that showcase local crafts, fashion, and contemporary art. Renowned glass artist, Jo Downs (jodowns.com) has one of her galleries here. This colourful and friendly space nestles between Rick Stein’s Deli and Gift Shop and never disappoints. Whether it’s a piece of glass art to take home or a gift for someone special, the vibrant colours reflect the nearby coast and countryside. Padstow
Further down the coast, Newquay is a cosmopolitan town known for its surf culture and has a host of surf and streetwear shops at every turn. If you can’t make the journey to Cornwall, but still want to stock up on some surf goodies, then online store 10 Over Surf Shop (10oversurf.com) is the place to go. Venture slightly out of town to Porth, and you’ll find one of Cornwall’s most exciting boutiques. Roo’s Beach (roosbeach.co.uk) combines designer beach-chic with expertly curated staples – there’s even a coffee and plant shop on site… it’s hard to leave! Similarly, Nansledan also provides an out-of-town retail experience that is as eclectic as it is exciting. This flourishing community is one for the sustainability conscious shopper and along with tempting cafés, you’ll also find vintage fashion at Love of Lemons (loveoflemons. co.uk) and cult brands that are kind to the planet at &Kin (andkin.co.uk).
Ocean explorers are also well-served by heading west, where Hayle hosts Down The Line surf shop (downthelinesurf.co.uk). Now in its 30th year of trading, there’s nothing the guys here don’t know about the surf. Experts in wetsuit fitting and with a range of demo boards and hire equipment available, you’ll be out on the water in no time. They also stock a wide range of surf clothing brands so you’ll look as good out of the water as you do in it! No round up of retail therapy would be worth its salt without a trip to St Ives. The town's narrow cobbled streets are brimming with studios, showcasing everything from ceramics and glasswork to contemporary paintings, reflecting its heritage as an artist’s enclave.

An exclusive three-storey waterfront house surrounded by stunning panoramic views.
Cormorant House is a beautiful, commanding property set on the edge of the River Fowey, in the tranquil and picturesque village of Golant. This village is a formally designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the stretching countryside views from the balcony certainly prove why. As you approach the property’s designated parking spaces from the sloping drive, you will find the entrance to the breathtaking property. Alternatively, walk up the steps to the side of the house where you can take in the view from the spacious paved terrace and enter the house via the second floor.
Step inside, and the home's true beauty is revealed with airy and spacious open-plan rooms, decorated to a high specification. The top floor of the three-storey property is entirely occupied by the vast main bedroom, comprising a walk-in dressing room and large en-suite bathroom with a freestanding bath and dual-entry shower. Walk down the bespoke steel and oak staircase into the living room, complete with dual-sided wood burner, and open one of its three sets of French doors onto the balcony. The house was designed by renowned architects and landscape designers, so added touches of luxury throughout like the air circulation/heat recovery system, Mandarin stone bathroom tiles and bespoke lighting make the property exceptionally stylish.
Downstairs are three further double bedrooms, all with beautiful views of the Fowey River to wake up to! The sleek contemporary kitchen is furnished with quartz worktops and Neff and Bosch appliances, creating the perfect space to cook and spend time with friends. If you venture further into Cormorant House you will discover its lower ground floor shower room, cinema room and multipurpose basement room to be used however you see fit. LUXURYWoodfired
A new generation of woodfired hot tubs from market leaders, Kernow Springs.
We all know Kernow Springs for their beautifully handcrafted woodfired hot tubs and saunas that grace all four corners of our county. Well, celebrating ten years of business, the dedicated team are now proud to introduce their new generation of Eco Tubs –The Woodfired Hydro Spa.
Business Owner, Martin Dean, explains: “Our traditional woodfired hot tubs have always been a popular choice – cheaper to run and much quicker to heat up than their electric, plastic counterparts. Simply soaking in a deep wooden tub is truly a unique experience in itself. However, listening to our customers has prompted us to design a new range of woodfired hot tubs that also include the luxury of a powerful hydrotherapy jet system for complete hot water therapy.”
Ten years of experience installing hot tubs designed to withstand coastal environments has taught the Kernow Springs team to use only the very finest quality materials. Unlike other companies, all of their metal work comes in 316 marine grade stainless steel as standard and all of their wood work is the finest quality Thermowood that holds a 25-year guarantee as external timber.
The entire range of Kernow Springs hot tubs and saunas are hand made by the team right here in Cornwall. Difficult access poses no problem for the skilled team, as they simply deliver in kit form and assemble on site without the need for expensive crane hire. No dealership, no middle man – simple. Available in a range of sizes from the cute twoperson tub right up to the popular family size eight-person tub, prices start from £3,299 + VAT, including free delivery and installation.
Kernow Springs will be exhibiting their new, unique Woodfired Hydro Spa, along with their fantastic Woodfired Saunas, at The Home Improvement & Self Build Show at The Royal Cornwall Showground from 7th to 8th October, so be sure to drop by for a chat with one of the team.

Keeping
COSY
As the days get shorter and we start to feel a chill in the air, we look at turning our homes into a place of warmth and comfort. If you are looking for a stylish and efficient way to stay snug this winter, why not consider an electric fire from Eden Hearth & Home? Whilst woodburning stoves and open fires may look more traditional, there are lots of added benefits to electric heating.
When you burn wood, oil, or coal to produce heat, you are burning a substance which, unlike electric fires, has an element of energy loss. Electric fire is almost 100% energy-efficient, as all energy turns into heat for your home with no energy loss from a chimney. A typical 2kw electric fire costs around 47p per hour to heat an average-sized room, and at just the simple flick of a switch! There’s also no time wasted chopping logs or cleaning up a mess after you’ve used it.
Instead, enjoy instant heat and warmth with minimal effort.
Eden Hearth & Home are sure to have an electric fire to suit your home and style. Choose from bespoke media fireplaces with space for your TV and sound systems, or a modern wallmounted model that doesn’t occupy any floor space at all. Or, there's a wide range of electric stoves in cast iron, timber or steel if your taste is more traditional! To have an eye-catching feature in your home, you can even dress it up with a hearth, wooden beam or fireplace.
The process of installing your beautiful electric fire or stove is also quick and easy. They can be installed in almost any setting near a plug socket, which makes them extremely versatile, unlike some other forms of heating. Alternative methods can be costly to install, and most traditional fireplaces are tied into chimney breasts, restricting the location of your fire.
HOME 38 | CORNWALL LIVING Install an energy-efficient appliance in your home with Eden Hearth & Home this autumn.
ABOVE Your fire, your way
Technology has also meant that manufacturers have been able to recreate the flame in a realistic, warm and cosy glow, so it looks just like an open fire in your own home! For optimum tranquillity, there are a whole host of fuel beds and flame options available at Eden Hearth & Home – choose from logs or coal to enhance your gas fire experience. This, paired with the added technology of app controls and the use of Google or Alexa, means electric fires have become a desirable addition to many homes. Enjoy the aesthetic and warmth of a real fire with the ease and convenience of an electric one.
With so many choices, choosing the right fire can be a daunting task. However, a gas fire provides cosy ambience and real flames, available in a range of stylish designs, and a great heat source for anyone who needs an instant boost of heat in their home, whether you have a large or small property. Take advantage of up to 98% energy efficiencies on many fires available to buy today, over burning wood or coal which can waste energy.
Another thing to consider when choosing your fire is safety, particularly with children or pets in the house. With a gas fire, you don’t
have to worry about falling embers or sparks and you can turn the appliance off instantly at the switch of a button. All of Eden Hearth & Home’s recommended manufacturers work to the highest industry standard, giving you more reason to sit back and relax.
The misconception that a gas fire is expensive to run has also been addressed thanks to modern building technology. This technology has allowed manufacturers to develop new gas fire engines that take in less gas and give out more heat which provides you with the most efficient solution to heating your home. If you would like to discuss which electric or gas fire might be best for your home or are simply after some more information, then pop into the Eden Hearth & Home showroom at Goonhavern Garden Centre, Truro. The friendly team will be happy to give you all the guidance you need!

WINDOWS Winter-ready
Heading into autumn, we all know how hard it is to bite the bullet and switch on our heating, especially with the ever-rising energy bills. As the seasons change and the temperature begins to drop, it is important our homes remain our sanctuaries and stay warm through the winter. Luckily, Philip Whear Windows and Conservatories is offering a range of energy-efficient glass to keep your home insulated and your heating bills low!
Philip Whear provides top-specification glass, with an exceptionally low ‘U’ value which means less heat transfer and increased insulation. This double glazing, with the addition of a reflective coating, is a particularly efficient choice for your windows as it bounces long-wave heat back into your room. Just as it protects you from the winter chill, the glass also keeps the warmth in!
Philip Whear’s sealed glass units have 20mm of cavity space, which contains argon gas. Denser than air, argon gas improves thermal insulation, especially when used in combination with a low-emissivity coating. This brings the temperature of your otherwise chilly windows up to that of the inside of your room.
Coupling this energy efficient glass with a warm edge spacer bar (the material that holds
the two panes of a sealed unit together) reduces the heat loss around the perimeter of the pane, which is what typically leads to condensation around the edges of a window. Philip Whear also offers toughened glass as standard which adds a safety element. The glass is much harder to break and if for any reason it does, the glass crubles into beads rather than shattering into shards. If required, the team can provide laminted glass for additional security, whilst protecting your home from damaging UV that fades furnitre, wallpaper and pictures. Not only are these products energy efficient, but they can provide you with longer term savings due to reduced energy consumption, keeping the heat inside your home. If you are looking to keep your home warm and energy-efficient this winter, why not get in touch with Philip Whear?

SLEEK style
There are several benefits to choosing shutters over blinds, particularly as we head into the chillier season, and Cornwall-based company Just Shutters has a range of options that could be the superior choice for your home this autumn.
As the days get colder, heating bills rise and quite often homes remain cold. Shutters, however, act as great insulators by reducing heat loss. Just as they keep out the sweltering heat in summer, they banish the chill from your home in autumn and winter. The cold air remains trapped between your shutters and windows, keeping your house warm and energy-efficient! If you order your shutters now, they can be fitted in time for the dropping temperatures towards the end of the year, just in time to keep your home cosy and insulated.
Despite the chillier autumn temperatures, the glint of fresh Cornish sun can still present an annoyance from your living room or bedroom. In addition to being great insulators, shutters are also a brilliant method of light control. They are able to keep your room nice and bright while skirting the intensity of direct sunlight.
It’s not just our eyes that stay protected either, but our homes. Keeping the heat in, but the persistent glare out, stops those annoying spots of sun bleach on our furniture and floors. This means no more patchy marks
on your sofas, wooden tables, or sideboards. They are also a great means of privacy without having to sit in a dark room with your blinds completely pulled! With shutters, you can enjoy the sun without compromising your comfort or your home.
If you are interested in replacing your blinds with an insulating alternative, why not get in touch with Just Shutters, your Cornwall-based shutter specialists, to get them in time for autumn?

Be in control of your heat and environmental impact this winter, with the latest smart technology from Wendron Stoves.
When it comes to providing the most efficient and innovative products on the market, Wendron Stoves has led the way in Cornwall. As a technically savvy company, they serve as a solution to addressing our expectations and concerns surrounding environmental consciousness and impact. While it can be challenging and often costly to address the environmental issues of today, there are solutions out there that can help us and the environment. So, why not face the problem head on and take a look at what Wendron Stoves has to offer, particularly as we approach the colder season?
HOME 46 | CORNWALL LIVING
Wendron Stoves’ commitment to giving their customers the perfect product against evolving environmental needs has resulted in some innovative solutions over the years. From ensuring that all installation engineers are HETAS qualified to sourcing wood-pelletburning stoves, the team are keen to challenge themselves to evolve and adapt for the future. This is why you’ll now find stoves in the range that incorporate smart technology via electronic control systems. Once the preserve of electric and oil-fired heating, complex controls are now available for the modest wood burner too. This means that we can use the technology we’re all familiar with, from our mobile phones to our tablets, to control our wood burners and mitigate several issues as we head into autumn.
There are a host of benefits to this, starting with minimising our impact on the environment. By exercising control over the heat from our burners using an electronic control system, you can achieve the cleanest combustion possible. As a result, you are actually getting the most from your wood! Start by setting the desired room temperature on your smartphone to prevent overheating, and when you’re not using your woodburning stove, the air supply is automatically closed. This stops the hot air in the room travelling up your chimney and being wasted. You can still light your cosy fire as usual, but this means you have the ease of letting the system control the air supply for you. If you change your mind and the room is too hot or cold, you still have the flexibility to adjust the temperature by simply using your smartphone. Finally, when it’s time to restoke, you’ll receive a notification on your phone, just as you do with any other App.
Currently, the market is being led by HWAM, from the small Danish town of Hørning. “HWAM® SmartControl™ allows
you to regulate the temperature level in rooms heated with a wood-burning stove directly with a phone or tablet for the first time ever. Wood-burning stoves are essentially put on an equal footing with other heating methods; you are no longer restricted to electric heaters if you want to easily regulate your room’s temperature. Chief Executive Officer of HWAM, Stefan Hvam Pederson, explains: “This is a notable step ahead compared to all existing remote-control systems, where you just follow combustion and need to go all the way to the stove to try to regulate the heat.” He continues, “The new technology gives the user a fantastic level of comfort as it does not allow the room to get too cold or too hot –not even if you are engrossed in a good book or an exciting football game! At the same time, you can take delight in the documented certainty that you’re lighting the stove in the most eco-friendly way possible. The method makes it possible for you to save up to 50 percent of your firewood, simply because you take better advantage of it. This brings an additional benefit – cleaner air in both your house and your neighbourhood.”
Wendron Stoves’ strong relationship with HWAM, after several years of trading, means you will receive the highest-quality product and after-market service possible. This control system also means no more getting up and down to put the next log on the stove or constantly having to change the thermostat in your home!

The team at Pumphrey and Weston use the finest sustainable, locally sourced materials to create beautiful shepherd huts using traditional techniques and modern methods. The founders, Mike and Byron, are involved in every step of the build and are dedicated to making the perfect hut for you to relax in or work from. From home offices and mobile catering to cosy and efficient living spaces, these shepherd huts can be used for almost anything!
Just one business that decided to offer these beautiful huts as accommodation is Moonshadow Luxury Shepherd Huts, where you can escape to the remote Cornish countryside for a night under the stars.
Owners Helen Read and Sarah Turner explain: “The moment we visited Pumphrey and Weston on site we fell in love with their ethos, ethics, sense of humour and enthusiasm. The whole team are professional, friendly and terrific craftsmen. It was also important to us that we used a local Cornish company. Mike and Byron were a joy to work with – they understood our needs and timelines, and the delivery was great fun – seeing the hut (Stargazer) arrive on site was spine tingling. The customer service has been superb.”
There are lots of things to love about the shepherd huts from Pumphrey and Weston, but for Helen and Sarah, it’s the quality: “The
huts are extremely well crafted with every attention to detail. It’s a bit like being on a boat, but on land, as every single inch of space has been well thought out to provide maximum comfort and luxury.”
Pumphrey and Weston shepherd huts are going down well with guests too! Helen and Sarah aimed to provide beautiful and unique holiday accommodation for discerning travellers, so they’ve also added wood-fired hot tubs, a Bedouin tent and a fire pit. They told us: “The feedback we get from guests is outstanding, who love the hut, location and romantic ambience. Our reviews have been outstanding.”
If Pumphrey and Weston’s shepherd huts sound like the perfect working space or accommodation for you, why not get in touch via their website? The team would love to hear from you.

SWITCH FOR THE SEASON
With the future in mind and energy prices uncertain, more people than ever are switching to air-source heating. We speak with Neil Rollinson of GreenGenUK to find out exactly what we can do about the fluctuating cost of fuel like oil and gas.
“Air-source heating is the ideal renewable upgrade for anyone looking to replace their existing fossil fuel boiler,” says Neil. “Disruption is minimal and with the £5,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme available, the upfront costs of installing a heat pump are now similar to that of oil or gas systems.”
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £5,000 lump sum towards the cost of installation, providing upfront funding to homeowners looking to install renewable heating. Neil explains: “Here at GreenGenUK, we deal with the application and then the grant money is deducted from what the customer pays. With homes needing to meet just a small number of eligibility criteria, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open to everyone.”
Air-source heat pumps completely replace the original system, supplying all of a property’s heating and hot water. When running with radiators, modern heat pumps installed by GreenGenUK achieve in excess of 400% efficiency. Not only does this create a carbon saving of several tonnes a year, but this makes them very affordable to run. On
top of this, your property will avoid high and low temperatures and have a heating system better for its fabric while creating a more comfortable living environment. Air-source heating seems like the obvious choice!
Neil, who’s worked with GreenGenUK for almost a decade, tells us a little bit more about the process: “The key to all heat pump installations is design. We start with a heat loss calculation that forms the basis of our proposal. A well-sized, well-installed heat pump is key. We offer free advice, free surveys and free proposals to anybody considering making the switch. We aim to keep our customers fully informed and to make the upgrade to renewable heating as stress free as possible.”
Cornwall-based GreenGenUK is among the South West’s leading sustainable energy experts. Contact their team of experts today to discuss the options for upgrading your home with renewable heating!

Family-run, and with a wealth of experience and knowledge of the local area, the Shore Stays team are certainly pros when it comes to holiday letting, with a reputation for taking the best care of their properties and guests.
“The reliable care and attention we give to managing properties on the north coast of Cornwall is second to none because it really is a true passion of ours,” says Sara. “As a family run business, we offer years of experience and take a personal approach to caring for each property for total peace of mind.
“We appreciate the time and care that has gone into creating each beautiful property, and it’s our mission to protect it for the owners while sharing it with others who will appreciate it just as much as they do. Whether it’s for long periods of time or just a few weeks, owners just need to let us know the times of year they would like to share their property and we do the rest. We make regular visits to each house and cover full inspections at changeover as standard, fixing any issues ourselves before new visitors arrive, as we have a super maintenance team on call 24/7!”
Shore Stays' top priority is to establish a great relationship with their owners so they can feel 100% confident that their home is being well cared for; from the finer details such as cleaning products and lightbulbs right through to re-decoration. “We’re proud to use local contractor Terry Harris & Sons, and our maintenance team all live locally, so are contactable 24 hours a day for both owners and guests alike,” adds Sara.
The team's property portfolio has a simple recurring theme; coastal locations that are close to the beach and offer a little slice of comfortable luxury. REVOLUTION A craft
In conversation with Brewing Director, Georgina Young, we delve into what makes St Austell Brewery’s signature cask ales the top beverages we all know and love.
Having been founded in 1851 by Walter Hicks, it’s safe to say that St Austell Brewery knows a thing or two about brewing, with over 150 years of practise behind the well-known Cornish brand. Georgina Young, Brewing Director of this long-standing establishment, gives us a glimpse into the brewery’s rich history, and an exciting insight into the inner workings of exactly what goes into the uniquely delicious cask ales we enjoy today.
“Back in 1851, it was only cask beers they were drinking,” Georgina begins, “and although we’ve much-improved the process since then, the basic elements remain the same; it’s all entirely natural. Using malted barley and hops grown on British fields, fermented with yeast and natural Cornish water known for its ‘soft’ qualities, the end result is something we’ve been working on for a long time, and it’s something we’re very proud of.”
Bottled and kegged beer is known for being fizzier than cask ales. This is because carbon dioxide is added in, whereas in cask ales it forms naturally. Over a sevenday process, yeast converts the natural starches and sugars found in the barley into alcohol and flavour compounds. Most of
the yeast is then removed, but a little is left behind to continue to work its magic in the cask down in the cellar, giving the beer its natural body and a slight tingle.
One of the latest additions to the St Austell Brewery collection is Anthem, a golden pale ale brewed with 100% British ingredients. A combination of four hop varieties brings the beer’s mango, peach, apricot and melon flavours to the forefront, and at 3.8% Anthem is a truly delightful tipple. “Where cask ales may once have been associated with an older generation, with a traditionally earthy and bitter taste,” Georgina continues, “today’s hops breeding programmes mean bigger, fruitier flavours are entering the craft beer market, appealing to a much wider audience."
With a strict quality system that means Master Cellermen in pubs across the south west ensure flawless maintenance and delivery from cask to glass, St Austell Brewery is proud to deliver the perfect pint every time, so make sure to try it for yourself on your next visit to the pub, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Keeping itLOCAL
Words by Jude Kereama
One of the greatest things about being a chef in Cornwall is the incredible produce that we can gather from within our great county. As restauranteurs, we have a fantastic array of suppliers that I use almost daily. We use the same suppliers that we have used for years, as we know they always send us the best produce that they have at the time. We are also lucky to have day boat fisherman who bring in line-caught fish, lobsters, crabs, squid, and organic farms that supply us with the best vegetables in season. So, where can everyone else find the same kind of quality that I use in my restaurants? Well, we use Warrens Butchers of Launceston in our restaurants, who just so happen to have a shop that is open to the public just off the A30 at Pennygillam estate. It’s like walking into the Willy Wonka of the butchery world; they have so many different cuts of every animal available for you at the counter. You can see the different breeds of cows that have been butchered and are hanging in a dry-age cabinet right before your very eyes.
FOODIE 70 | CORNWALL LIVING
Guiding us around the Duchy, Jude Kereama lets us in on his favourite places to find the very best Cornish produce.
Tregew Food Barn market is another fantastic place to go to find butchers, various farmers, fishmongers, shellfish suppliers, vegetable suppliers, cheesemongers, winemakers, distillers, roasters, and many other producers of fine ingredients. There is even hot food and drinks available to have while stocking your bags with all the goodies!
There is also Trevaskis farm (which I love to go to), Gear farm, Trevalyan farm, Cusgarne organic farm shop, Newlyn fish market and various fishmongers around Newlyn, and as for Cornish meat, there are plenty of other local butchers I use like Dales in Helston, Retallack in Lizard, and Brian Etherington in Scorrier.
On top of this, there are plenty of little farm stalls selling the best produce of the day, which is very cost-effective and delicious. In Porthleven, we are particularly lucky to have Origin coffee roasters right on our doorstep where we can have ground coffee or whole beans that have been roasted on site to take home. We are also blessed with local butchers and day boat fishmongers dotted around the county, brimming with fantastic produce.
Picking up local beverages in Cornwall is also a treat. We’re spoiled with local cider producers like Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm, Cornish Orchards, Polgoon Vineyard, St Ives Cider and many other cideries where you can just pop in and have a tasting. For beer, there’s incredible producers like Sharps, Verdant, St Austell Brewery and Skinners, not forgetting Shoals Brewery in Porthleven, where you can also try and buy in their tasting rooms. There’s a whole host of breweries like St Ives Brewery, The Bearded Brewery, Harbour Brewery, and many more that produce the most wonderful craft beers.
Distilleries like Loveday, Wrecking Coast, Tarquins, Caspyn, Trevethen, Mounts Bay, Pocket Full of Stones, Rosemullion and Crusty Juggler Rum are producing the most fantastic spirits, while Cornish wine has well and truly been put on the world map by Camel Valley Winery, closely followed up by Knightor, Trevibben Mill, Bosue Vineyard, Looe Valley, and Polgoon to fly the Cornish flag for wines. With such an incredible abundance of ingredients and suppliers all around us here in Cornwall, the question begs to be asked, why look elsewhere?

EXPLORING PENWITH GALLERY
Penwith Gallery has been an institution for artists and art lovers since it opened its doors in 1961 and is home to the Penwith Society of Arts, founded in 1949 by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Bernard Leach among others. It was here that several of the founders ran summer schools in painting and drawing, creating a centre for the arts right here in Cornwall. The society exhibits a year-round programme in the members' gallery alongside two additional spaces showing works by society members, associates and artists in Cornwall and further afield. All pieces are for sale in association with the Own Art scheme, so no matter your budget you can get hold of your favourite piece. This association with so many progressive and influential artists has given the Penwith Society a unique place in British art history.
The gallery is open from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday for you to browse and purchase the beautiful pieces on display.

Capturing sand and sea
Cornwall-based artist Gemma Lessinger is mesmerised by the sea and her textured artworks reflect the wild, powerful and healing properties of time spent by the ocean. Her aim is to bring these beach memories to you in your home, while also being as sustainable as possible, focusing on re-purposing and up-cycling other people’s waste into her treasure.
Gemma can turn your beach memories into something you can not only see, but feel in your home. She does this using these two unique elements; sand and re-purposed materials. Sand is collected from the exact beach your memory is from, with each location giving different colours and size of grain, creating a completely bespoke look with each piece. Gemma also up-cycles other people’s waste to create another dimension of texture in her work, using off-cuts of
fibreglass from surfboard manufacturing, driftwood, fabric and beach plastics in her work. She also up-cycles, taking old surfboards destined for landfill, using them as canvases, and turning each into a piece of wall art.
Various original artworks are available for sale on her website, along with limited edition prints, created in Cornwall on sustainable bamboo paper. Commissions of all kind are welcome, from painting on classic canvas to re-purposed surfboards, and are the perfect bespoke gift to celebrate a big occasion, from birthdays to weddings and anniversaries. Gemma also teaches painting workshops once a month, helping others to re-purpose waste into art.

A little piece of the Cornish sea
Owner and founder of Waves Gallery in Porthleven, Mike Lacey, has been capturing the essence of the ocean for over a decade. Working from his base in the fishing village of Porthleven, some of his best-known spots to snap the sea include Praa Sands, Kynance Cove, Porthcurno, and of course, the reefs and clifftops of Porthleven.
The gallery itself stocks striking splashbacks so you can bring a touch of Cornwall’s
ocean world to your home. The finished results are waterproof, UV protected and easy to clean, making them perfect for your kitchen or bathroom. What’s more, you aren’t restricted to standard sizes or proportions! Simply give Mike and the team the measurements you require and they will create a bespoke backdrop, made to measure for your space.

Incorporating over 60 paintings from public collections such as the Tate, the Walker Art Gallery and private collections, Penlee House Gallery & Musuem is exhibiting Lamorna Colony Pioneers. This exhibition is an overview of the colony, from its founding just after the turn of the 20th century to the 1960s. Elizabeth and Stanhope Forbes both used the valley as inspiration for students at their painting school in the early 20th century. Between 1910 and 1920, the reputation of Lamorna as one of Cornwall’s leading art colonies grew due to the presence of Samuel John ‘Lamorna’ Birch, Laura and Harold Knight and Alfred Munnings. All of these artists went on to become leading Royal Academicians. Don’t miss out on this exhibition running until the 30th September!

An exhibition you won’t want to miss
UNDER THE SURFACE
The River Fowey becomes the latest subject in Kurt Jackson’s new exhibition.
Kurt Jackson has spent well over 40 years working on, next to and along many different watercourses, painting and drawing, following and observing these dynamic and enigmatic waterways. For his newest exhibition, Jackson focuses on the River Fowey, one of Cornwall’s most iconic rivers, tracing its route from the source high up on Bodmin Moor. From here, it weaves through farmland and wooded valleys across the county until it meets the sea in the sheltered deep-water estuary by Fowey town.
Over the last few years, Jackson has truly immersed himself in the elements on a beautiful, diverse and richly rewarding journey to create this series of paintings, simply titled The Fowey. Jackson says: “I am not alone in thinking and dreaming about rivers, let alone working with them. Rivers are places we find emotive, they carry our memories, feelings and histories.” To quote the environmental campaigner and journalist George Monbiot: “Through Kurt Jackson’s stunning and gorgeous paintings, we derive a sense of what rivers once were and can be again. We can feel the flow and power of these magnificent living systems, their latent force and demand for freedom, the hint of what they want to be.”
Kurt Jackson goes further, stating: “Rivers serve as borders, transport routes, food, water and energy sources. But they are more than that – they have a life of their own and support more life and lives than we could ever imagine. Maybe more importantly, they are on the front line of the environmental and climate crisis.”
For The Fowey, the Jackson Foundation Gallery has partnered with Friends of the Earth, a pioneering charity that works to protect people and planet. For the duration of The Fowey exhibition, the gallery will host Transforming Tomorrow, a photographic exhibition telling the story of Friends of the Earth's most iconic change-making campaigns. Kurt Jackson’s The Fowey and Friends of the Earth’s Transforming Tomorrow will run until February at the multiaward-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just. Why not pop down to have a look at this beautiful collection of artworks?

INTRICATE illustrations
Emily Penfold is a British multidisciplinary artist, who graduated with a First-Class Honours degree from Central Saint Martins in 2018. Within her practise, she explores the fragility of life and celebrates its internal magic in all its forms. She challenges people to find light and positivity in the dark and is particularly inspired by views of life as a cycle rather than a linear journey. No end, just beginnings. Emily creates work that is beautiful yet thought-provoking.
Her series of exquisite original drawings in graphite, pen and ink emerged following a haunting trip to the Killing Fields in Cambodia. Through these drawings, she explores a subject that is both personal and universal. The juxtaposition of human skulls against vibrant colours creates a sinister yet hopeful vision, exploring our own human impression and everlasting presence. The remains of those now gone portrays our souls as a timeless essence.
In her more recent work, Emily has delved into the fragile dimensions of sea life, exploring the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Inspired by this powerful force of nature, the infinite sea evokes an unequivocal sense of both fear and calm. Its unpredictability can make you feel so fragile and alive all at once.
Like the sea, jellyfish have the power to simultaneously instil wonder and fear. Their sting is like an electric shock – a spark of nature’s energy. Just as these creatures can mesmerise, Emily’s light pieces do the same! She uses light and bold colours to highlight the hypnotic beauty of these translucent bundles of energy, like a ‘ghost heart’ pulsating through the water. They truly capture a moment in time with these captivating creatures.
Emily frequently exhibits across London, the home counties and Cornwall. Her client base continues to grow across the UK and worldwide, so if you would love a piece of her original artwork in your home, don’t hesitate to get in touch! Commissions are also available if you would like a unique piece from Emily.

6 EMILY PENFOLD
Turquoise Stinger by Emily Penfold
Delving into the fragile dimensions of sea life, Emily explores the delicacy of what lies beneath the surface. Jellyfish have the power to simultaneously instil wonder and fear. Their sting is like an electric shock, and yet they do not fail to mesmerise. In her original ink paintings, Emily uses bold colours to highlight the hypnotic beauty of these translucent bundles of energy.

10 FUSED GLASS BY CLAIRE HARRIS
Beach Scene by Claire Harris
In this beautiful piece, thin layers of glass are cut to carefully create the background image, before crushed glass, called ‘frit’, is added. The powdered frit creates the fluffy cloud-like look while course frit adds extra texture. Currently in its unfired state, this piece will gradually be heated in a specialist glass kiln to around 800 degrees Celsius, in a process that will take around 12 hours.

Cornish Surf Sunset by Martin Grimshaw
‘Autumn surf evening, warm salt dries on the skin, does the sun’s gold lack its lustre, until that is to it I whisper, tomorrow I travel, to kiss her again.’ The autumn sun and deep blue waves are truly reflected in this piece from Lizard Art, a co-operative of artists who live and work on the Lizard Peninsula and create a variety of styles and media. Like ‘Cornish Surf Sunset’ by Martin Grimshaw, many draw their inspiration from the wild Cornish landscape and the spectrum of light and colour it provides.

OF ARTDecades
Celebrating 20 years of growth and captivating art, Atishoo Gallery warmly invites us to pay them a visit this season.
Based in the beautiful Georgian village of Charlestown, Atishoo Gallery first opened in 2003, representing about thirty artists. 20 years later, they now display work by over 100 artists and designers. The gallery is owned and run by artists and picture framers Liz Hackney and Paul Clark, who support British-based artists and designers by sourcing beautiful art, crafts, jewellery and homewares from Cornwall to Scotland.
The gallery also has a large collection of paintings and prints by Liz and Paul themselves. They both work in vibrant colours, inspired by their Cornish surroundings, painting the harbours, beaches and countryside of Cornwall. Paul works in acrylic paint on canvas and is known for his starry night harbour paintings. If you look closely at his artwork, you will be able to spot people taking a dip in the sea and dogs strolling around the harbours. Liz also paints on canvas as well as paper, using tissue and collage to create texture, before going over these textures in layers of acrylic ink. She loves painting the cliffs, sea and sky, with bright turquoise waters and rugged cliffs.
All of Liz and Paul's artwork is reproduced as prints and cards, each framed in their
workshop above the gallery. Paul has been a bespoke picture framer for more than 25 years and frames for some of Cornwall's leading artists as well as the general public. He is known for his excellent attention to detail.
Recently Liz and Paul have been involved in collaborating with the owners of the Lady Daphne, a historic Thames barge moored at Charlestown harbour. In collaboration with local artist Claire London, they've held a number of pop-up art exhibitions below deck on this beautiful vessel which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
Atishoo Gallery is open year-round from 11am to 5pm on Tuesday to Saturday and on occasional Sundays and Mondays. Why not pay a visit to look at their incredible range of art and artists?

COLLECTIONSCaptivating
Exploring our shared connection to the landscape, with artwork by Steve Slimm.
In Cornwall, we are surrounded by ancient land, steeped in history, standing stones and a feeling of a long-forgotten culture. Cornish-based artist Steve Slimm has been expertly capturing the transcendental essence of this land for over 40 years, also forming connections with Dartmoor, Bristol Avon Gorge and more recently mid-Wales. The art conveys feelings as well as places, exploring the intimacy that exists between the observer and the thing closely observed with the eyes of the heart.
Each collection from Steve beautifully exhibits our Cornish landscape, and his latest collection Where There is Light, There is Also Shadow (which officially launches online this October with dedicated merchandise) is no exception. As with all of the collections, there is a sense of cohesion. Sunlight melts into the sky, shadows encompass their source and rather than a strict observation of the landscape’s minute details, you have a real sense of the feeling of the place. From water and creeks to churches and trees, each piece exploits the beauty of Cornish light and its everchanging effect on the land. The art has no desire to tell you what a place looks like, but instead
conveys the experience of being there, present in the moment, connecting us and our individual experiences to the landscape. Despite the same landscape standing before us all, this collection gives the viewer space to appreciate the light and shadow of our land while pondering our own unique connection to it.
If any of these pieces resonate with you, the originals are available to purchase on his website! Have a closer look at the beautiful nucleus of light encompassed by leafy surroundings in ‘Forest Blue’. Alternatively, explore ‘Liquid Light of Morning’ where the familiar colours and shadows of sunrise bleed into each other and drift away from the darkness of night. If it is high-quality prints you are after, you can also browse these alongside the expansive range of merchandise online.

COLOURFUL COASTLINE Cornwall’s
Cornwall Wildlife Trust is protecting and celebrating our rich coastline with volunteers like you!
When we think of our Cornish coastline, we picture rugged cliffs, sparkling blue horizons and gentle waves lapping onto never-ending stretches of sand. But what if some of the most beautiful sights could be found beneath the surface, in a world waiting to be discovered?
For example, the solar-powered sea slug whose distinctive chloroplasts on its wings, feet and head make it look like a sky full of glittering stars! Or the sea hare, a snail with ‘rabbit ears’ that takes on the colour of the seaweed it eats! Perhaps the most colourful of all, the rainbow sea slug, was only first spotted in Cornish waters last summer.
This is just some of the lesser-known wildlife thriving on our shores and being cared for by several skilled marine volunteer groups all around Cornwall’s coastline, thanks to Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The charity set up Your Shore Network, a network of eighteen community-led marine conservation groups that run beach cleans, surveys and events. The charity even trains its own beach rangers and young volunteers to take part in citizen science projects. The Shoresearch groups work hard monitoring the shoreline, while the Seasearch
groups spend time in the water surveying the seas and their Seaquest groups spot marine mammals out at sea from the coast. These groups collect data that monitors the health of Cornish waters and provides evidence of threats, calling on better protection for our valuable marine life.
All groups cater their work to a unique marine environment and run fun, interactive and educational public events and talks, helping to raise awareness of the issues surrounding our marine life and habitats while campaigning on their behalf. Anyone can get involved in these groups, even complete beginners!
So, if you are passionate about Cornwall’s beautiful marine life and ensuring its future protection, why not join Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s brilliant network of conservation groups? Simply get in touch via the website to be part of protecting your shore.

Following the recent increase in corporation rates on the 1st of April, we speak with Becca Blewett, Senior Associate at RRL (experts in everything accountancy from audits to not-for-profits) as she sheds light on some of the ways you can extract profit from your company, from salary (including benefits and bonuses) and dividends through to pension contributions.
Becca begins by explaining salaries: “Paying a salary is one of the most common ways of extracting profits. Every person with a taxable income below £100,000 has an annual personal allowance of £12,570. So, if you were to be paid a £12,570 salary from your company, you would not pay any income tax on this. Any salary between £12,570 and £50,270 would be taxable at 20%. Salary between £50,270 and £100,000 would be taxable at 40%. Any income over £100,000 would suffer higher tax rates as the personal allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 that your income goes above £100,000. Your personal allowance is therefore zero if your income is £125,140 or above.
“The other ‘stealth band’ of the highincome child benefit charge applies where one partner’s income exceeds £50,000. Directors are liable to national insurance contributions (NICs) on any salary in excess of £12,570. Employers secondary class 1 NICs are due to be paid on any salary in excess of £9,100 (for 2023/24). There may, however, be the availability of the Employment Allowance (£5,000 for 2023/24) which is set against the first £5,000 of employers NIC due.”
Becca continues by explaining more about employment allowance: “The employment allowance is available for any company (or group of companies) with more than one employee with an employers’ Class 1 NIC liability of less than £100,000. This means that directors could pay themselves £12,570 per year (or £9,100 if the Employment Allowance isn’t available) which counts towards their state benefit entitlement without paying income tax or national insurance contributions. Both salary payments and any employers NIC paid are tax deductible for companies, for

Words by Becca Blewett
corporation tax purposes.” However, unlike salaries, dividends are not liable to NIC but are still subject to income tax, albeit at lower tax rates, as Becca explains: “Dividends currently attract an allowance of £1,000 (for 2023/24), meaning you will not pay tax on the first £1,000 of dividend income. This is due to be halved to £500 from 2024/25. Dividends in excess of this £1,000 allowance will be taxed at 8.75% if they fall in the basic rate band, 33.75% if they fall within the higher rate band and 39.35% if they fall within the additional rate band. The company must also ensure that they have enough available distributable reserves to be able to declare the dividend. If spouses are shareholders, shared ownership can be robustly organised for both spouses to draw dividends tax efficiently (useful where the amount required to be extracted exceeds £50,270).”
Lastly, Becca kindly takes us through employer pension contributions, the most tax-efficient way of extracting profit from a company: “Thought should be given as to whether the directors need the cash to be readily available to them now or whether they can keep the funds locked up until they withdraw the pension. Like salary, employer pension contributions are an allowable expense for corporation tax purposes. Provided the contributions do not exceed the individual’s annual allowance they will also not be subject to income tax, making them
extremely tax efficient. These should always be considered where you don’t need the cash in your hands, and the business doesn’t need the funds.”
Becca leaves us with one last piece of advice: “It should be worth noting that when the Companies House reform comes into effect, filleted and abridged accounts will no longer be available for small and micro companies. This means that a profit and loss account will have to be filed (significantly increasing the available financial data available to the public) and the value of any dividend distributions would be visible to viewers of the accounts. Many owner-managed limited companies are considering extracting profits by way of salary, instead of dividend, as a result.”
Although the answer is not always straightforward and depends on circumstances, the friendly team at RRL are ready and waiting to offer you the advice you need, so why not give them a call?

A HELPING hand
In the midst of a housing emergency that calls for real change, Shelter is a charity that defends the right to a safe home by offering free local and legal advice, running an emergency helpline 365 days a year and leading national campaigns to fight for change at the top, plus much more.
Just one of the many people who faced a housing emergency was Sarah, who alongside her family was forced out of her housing association home after her mother sadly passed away. For the next three years, they lived in temporary accommodation, sometimes without light, heating, or hot water. Shelter began supporting Sarah when she got in touch with the charity to share her story. One of Shelter’s solicitors worked alongside her and made sure that the council officially recognised Sarah’s accommodation wasn’t suitable. Sarah is now in a safe, secure social home. Sarah explains:
“If I didn't get any help from Shelter, I probably would have ended up in another temporary accommodation. Then how would I live for the future? Now, I’m happy and secure. My son is overjoyed. I'm just really, really grateful to Shelter.”
Would you like to be a part of the positive change that transforms futures? You can have a direct impact on those struggling with housing by leaving a gift in your will to fund
the future of those left without a home. Shelter has partnered with expert will writing services to help you write your will for free! You can do this online or on the phone from the comfort of your own home, or by speaking face to face with a trusted solicitor.
By writing your will for free and including a gift to Shelter, you can give families like Sarah’s real hope for the future. This could help build a generation of new homes and affect the development of new rent reform laws. Right now, 101,300 households are still living in temporary accommodation in England, the highest level in almost 20 years. Your gift will give generations of families like Sarah’s the change they need.
If you are interested in Shelter’s free will writing services, why not visit their website for more information and be part of the positive change against the housing emergency?
