Keep your dog safe with the Adder Pack

With adder bites in dogs on the rise, it could pay to be prepared when you are out walking with your four-legged friend. All adder bites require urgent veterinary treatment, but to make all the difference to your dog’s recovery, it’s important to act fast.

The Adder Pack provides you with all the necessary information and equipment needed to administer immediate first aid. There is also a clear and concise ‘what to do’ guide to walk you through the worrying period between the time of the bite and arriving at the vets. With the Adder Pack in your pocket, you and your pooch can enjoy outdoor adventures with the kit that all dog owners should have, but hopefully will never need!

For more information contact adderpacks@outlook.com or visit www.adderpacks.com

Getting the best of the beach

We all want our dogs to enjoy the beach as much as we do, so Kernow Veterinary Group have let us in on a few things to make sure they stay safe while doing so. On particularly hot days, our furry friends are susceptible to heat stroke, so it is recommended you avoid the beach altogether. If the beach is busy on a cooler day, a good ‘leave it’ cue can be very helpful to avoid picnic poachers and frisbee

thieves! Lastly, remember to watch out for local wildlife, and if your dog is a water baby, be mindful of strong currents. By keeping the local vets’ details on hand, and with a few beach essentials, our dogs can play safely in the sun.

3TRENALE COURT HOLIDAY COTTAGES

Trenale Court Cottages is a firm favourite for a few famous furry faces. Pictured here are Taffy ‘Chicken’, the doggy star of the final Doc Martin series 10 filmed in 2022, with the late Dodger (centre) ‘Buddy’ in previous Doc Martin series, and TV star Paddy (left). They enjoy the comfort of the cottages, the private gardens and enclosed paddock, along with the delightful walks from the door to Tintagel village with its pubs, shops and castle. They also like the many coastal walks on offer and to dip their paws in the river walking to St Nectan’s Glen waterfall!

Reasons why 5

OF THE BEST DOGS LOVE THE FALMOUTH HOTEL

Five reasons why the Falmouth Hotel should be top of your list for a dog-friendly stay.

4HISTORY

1LUXURY

Often referred to as the ‘Grande Dame of Falmouth’, Falmouth Hotel’s luxurious and relaxed atmosphere means you’ll be looked after by a team that understands how dogs are very much part of the tribe. The hotel has many dog-friendly rooms that boast wonderful sea views. Dogs are also allowed out and about in the hotel grounds on a lead, so it’s really a no-brainer to bring your waggy-tailed friend along!

2LOCAL BEACHES

This area of Cornwall couldn’t be better for playing on the sands, with Gyllyngvase beach right on the doorstep. Dogs are permitted before 10am for a cool, early-morning walk or for a balmy evening stroll any time after 6pm in high season. After September 30th, when the temperature has dropped a bit, you and your pooch have the run of the shoreline 24/7. Grab a rug, a picnic and enjoy!

3PUBS

Falmouth town itself has a plethora of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and restaurants for refuelling on your Cornish adventures. Inside the Falmouth Hotel’s Castle Beach Bar & Brasserie, you can expect locally caught fish and grass-fed local meat to grace the menu. And, of course, there are Cornish pasties, cream teas, and local ice cream in abundance.

Endless miles of walks stretch from either end of the seafront promenade. Turn left out of the hotel and you’ll discover the historic Pedennis Castle. Or walk a little further into town to the Prince of Wales pier where you and your pup can catch the St Mawes Ferry across the bay to explore the Roseland Peninsula. Head right and the South West Coast Path towards Mawnan Smith winds past Maenporth beach, around Rosemullion Head and on to the banks of the Helford.

5PET FRIENDLY

Last but not least, and our favourite reason for staying at the Falmouth Hotel, is that you don’t have to leave anyone behind. With the best available rates on offer, and a small additional charge for your pup per night, it’s never been easier to holiday with your pooch!

While Cove UK cannot guarantee this income, it is a good indication for those looking to see

TOGETHER Adventure

At St Michaels Resort, there’s no need to leave anyone behind.

The words “Yes, we are dog friendly!” have become a bit of a catchphrase for the friendly reservations crew at St Michaels Resort, and with good reason; dog owners country-wide continue to yearn for a comfortable break on the majestic Cornish coast with their four-legged friends in tow. Time and time again, visitors have found themselves greeted with a dog-friendly welcome as St Michaels proves the perfect launchpad for relaxing (and occasionally epic) adventures together across the beaches, coast paths, woodlands and gardens of south Cornwall.

The hotel takes inspiration from its Cornish coastal setting and boasts airy, sea-view rooms with lots of light, deep beds and crisp cotton sheets, perfect for relaxing after days out exploring. When you’re not out and about, the attentive staff will truly go the extra mile to make every stay special for their guests – both two and four-legged. And for a truly indulgent visit, why not treat yourself in the top-of-the-range spa?

A variety of dog-friendly bedrooms are available across the resort, with designated space in restaurant and bar areas too. Canine guests checking into beach residences or resort bedrooms will each enjoy snacks, a blanket, a dog bed and bowl. Many of the one, two and three-bed beach residences managed by St Michaels

are available for pet stays, with deep balconies and lots of floorspace for a lazy evening stretch to follow a day of sniffing out beaches and coast paths!

Recent changes to Cornwall beach restrictions for pets have made daily walks a breeze too, with high season walks on popular beaches (including Gylly beach) permitted before 10am and after 6pm, and there are no restrictions in place between October and April. When your furry friend has explored all of Gylly beach, try Helford Passage for walks along the river’s beaches and fields, and maybe even a visit to Trebah Garden. Slightly further afield lies Kennack Sands on the Lizard Peninsula, one of the few year-round dog-friendly beaches. Make sure you head to the second beach along, which is clearly sign posted and a perfect sandy beach for dogs to explore off the lead!

5 THE LEMON ARMS

Mylor is the perfect spot for a creekside walk, a tucked-away haven for wildlife waiting to be explored. It is ideal for nature lovers looking to stretch their legs while enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the area with their furry friend. One of our favourite strolls is from Mylor Bridge, along Mylor Creek and then around to Restronguet Weir and back. We recommend refuelling at the Lemon Arms after working up an appetite on this relaxing circular walk. The team have a brilliant menu of pub classics, a daily specials board, local ales on tap and to top it all off, a dog-friendly beer garden for your sleepy hound to rest their legs!

OF TOWN

Slickers has been busy selling top-quality dog products from its shop on Padstow’s North Quay high street, but did you know it has a second location on the quieter outskirts of the town? Continuing to sell all your doggy essentials, Slickers’ Out of Town store can be found in a nearby industrial estate and is open every Friday to Monday. Get hold of everything you need without having to beat the Padstow crowds and parking!

The products include a range of dog slings and carriers, which seamlessly blend quality with strength, style and comfort. These are perfect for keeping young pups by your side or helping older dogs keep up on those long walks. They’re not just for small dogs either – if your four-legged friend weighs up to 6kg then the medium carrier is a great size for them. Their large slings can even carry up to 12kg and evenly distributes the weight of your pooch!

Alternatively, explore the large range of grooming products on offer at Slickers. From fur baby cologne to thinning scissors, the eco-friendly and sustainable

products will help keep your dog looking and smelling beautiful. You could even treat them to some coconut mint toothpaste and refreshing citrus shampoo!

So, why not pay a visit to the Slickers Out of Town store at Unit 4F in Trecerus Industrial Estate for all your top-quality doggy essentials, and maybe even a treat for your furry friend?

ONLY THE

Nestled just off the Atlantic Highway at Hawksfield amongst the rolling green hills, newly refurbished wooden-clad barns house a new home for Bella’s Pet Boutique (BPB), named after Jaclyn and Craig’s Boston Terrier Bella. After she passed away in early 2021, they decided to open BPB in her honour. Bella’s younger sister Phoebe, also a Boston Terrier, is now there to sample and quality test all the glorious items they stock; from collars and coats, to toys and treats, they really do have all you could ask for. And not just for dogs, but for cats and humans too, so you can match with your furry friends all year round. Especially with their top-of-the range Dry Robe selection, you can kit the whole family out with only the best coverage for all seasons.

Their dedication to finding cool, classic, quality products for dogs and cats that are both fun and functional is what makes them one of Cornwall’s goto stores for pet supplies. This is, in part, because they are proud to be the only stockist of George Barclay dog beds in the county, a British brand famous for luxurious, functional and long-lasting products, with

an array of colours and sizes in stock, meaning you’re sure to find a bed for your bounding buddy.

Tried and tested by their own pooches, they would never stock something that they would not, or have not, used themselves. This ensures they can deliver honest, professional advice on everything they have to offer, which includes their popular range of BioThane-made collars, giving a durable, waterproof and most importantly mud-proof finish for those messy pups, big or small. Not to mention the range of Italian harnesses that sit nicely across the chest, taking pressure away from the trachea and spine and giving your dog style, safety and comfort when out exploring the world with you.

The team at Bella’s Pet Boutique provide the best care and attention, so even the most nervous of canine customers will be met with love and patience in order to make it the best shopping experience for all involved. Stop by today at Hawksfield A39, St Breock, Nr Wadebridge PL27 7LR. FOR

3OLD MULLION INN

As you wander idly through the quiet village of Mullion, you’ll likely spot the traditional thatched roof of one of the Lizard Peninsula’s most iconic establishments. This pub has been providing a genial welcome to the weary traveller since the 16th century. Inside, it offers guests five en-suite rooms, all of which provide cosy and comfortable, dog-friendly shelter for a night of rest after a day exploring the Lizard. Downstairs, the chefs remain busy preparing a menu of delicious meals, drawing on local produce and catering to all dietary requirements. A doggy menu keeps the pooch well fed too, so, if you’re looking to rest and refuel during your exploration of the UK’s most southerly peninsula, the Old Inn, Mullion comes highly recommended. www.oldinnmullion.co.uk

4THE BLUE PETER INN

You’ll find the Blue Peter Inn nestled within the beautiful seaside town of Polperro, amongst ancient smugglers’ cottages right next to the harbour. Situated just a stone’s throw away from the Prince of Wales pier, Finn Mcouls is a proudly dog-friendly pub in the beautiful coastal town of Falmouth, and home to pub dog, Loki.
