Halloween at Heartlands
Heartlands is not only a slice of Cornish history – it’s also a World Heritage Site. Across the 19 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds are the stunning botanical gardens and interactive exhibitions, crowned by an iconic engine house. A trip always makes a fantastic place to explore with the family. But if you dare to pay a visit at night-time with the children, be prepared to be spooked at the Haunted Halloween Ball on 31st October. The bash, happening at the Visitor Centre from 6pm to 8.30pm, promises to be a night to remember. With tickets at just £7 per child, this won’t give you a fright! And for this the kids will get the chance to test their dance moves at the disco, enjoy fun games, and experience some scary and creepy animal encounters. There’s also a pumpkin carving competition, so get to work and bring your creation for a chance to win the top prize. All this is hungry work, so they can tuck into the ghoulishly delicious snacks. Booking is essential to avoid disappointment, so get your scariest costumes sorted and grab tickets while you can.

Dressing up and more at the Cathedral Truro Cathedral’s Summer Fun for children and families is drawing to a close and with kids going back to school, the Education Department is busy preparing for school and class visits to the cathedral. They’ll be sorting out the dressing up gear, the various trails they offer and the learning packages. If you want more information about school visits to the cathedral, Education Officer contact Lizzie Arthur on 01872 276782 or lizziearthur@trurocathedral.org.uk. Colin Reid of Truro Cathedral explains some other things to look forward to on the horizon: “We’ll also have our ‘Messy tables’ on the first and third Saturday of the month with a range of Arts and Craft materials available from 11am to 2pm. During October half term (26th to 30th October) we’ll also be putting on some great art and activities for families and children as well as a range of spotter trails.” Check the website or give them a call for more details.

Amazon inspired art at Eden Anyone who has ever visited The Eden Project will tell you that it’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen before. A feast for all the senses, it’s a fantastic family experience all year round. And if you’ve never made the trip, Autumn is a great time of year to visit as the beach begins to feel less tempting. Coming up from 17th October is an exhibition featuring the paintings of contemporary Falmouth-based painter, John Dyer. John is celebrated for his vibrant pieces, awash with colour, a childlike sense of wonder, and always a touch of mischief. For his latest muse, he’s turned to the rainforest. John explains: “In 1989 I spent some time in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil and it was this expedition as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society that made we want to paint and to paint amazing plants. My Amazon connection is still very live at the exhibition of my new ‘Spirit of the Rainforest’ paintings at the Eden Project.”

Celebrate the spirit of the River Tamar A special festival in October celebrates the River Tamar, which flows through the heart of the Westcountry. Head to the National Trust’s historic Cotehele Quay – always a fun place to visit with the kids – on 10th October from 11am to 4pm. The event showcases local produce, artists and community groups based along the Tamar, along with conservation projects to safeguard the river’s future. Over the summer, the community have been invited to share their photos and stories, to paint their own interpretation of the River Tamar. Creations collected during the roadshow will be brought together for a special animation, reflecting what the River Tamar means to people.
Get your glow on! Back by popular demand, Boconnoc Country Estate hosts Glow in the Park 2015 on 17th October. The 5km fun run, open to anyone over the age of eight, is the ultimate night-time party fun! Head through the Glow zones wearing high-viz clothing, head torches, glow sticks and anything else that glows! Discover the many zones including the Foam Party, UV Bubble zone, Fluorescent Park, the Twilight Zone and Rainbow Road. Electrifying light shows and energising beats will carry you around the course. Don’t worry about running in the dark. The course has guide lighting, marshals at all waypoints and medics onsite. At registration you’ll receive a free glow headband. After completing the course, enjoy the live music and light shows. Glow in the Park is open to all abilities and offers everyone (children aged 8+) the opportunity to dance, walk and run together in a safe, friendly and fun environment. Event organiser Ben Mason says: “We have created a fun night out for people to dress up in their Glow and party, with a fitness element too and at a great venue. It’s going to be a fantastic night.“ The event raises money for charities including Penhaligon’s Friends, Get seen for Unseen, Cornwall Air Ambulance and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Visit www.glowinthepark.co.uk for more details
Each of the tales from the riverbank will be brought together in a bid to capture the spirit of the Tamar and encourage people to support the waterway for generations to come. The ‘Make Your TaMARK’ campaign, spearheaded by the Tamar Partnership, aims to protect and improve water quality and wildlife in the river. A great day out for all the family, the festival is set to include storytelling, displays, talks and the chance to find out how to get involved with water-based activities including canoeing, gig rowing and fishing.

here your child goes to school is one of the most important decisions you make as a parent, and one that no doubt has kept you awake at night on at least one occasion. One of the first steps to deciding if a school is right for your son or daughter is to go along to an open day. You can see the facilities for yourself and walk around the campus. You can talk to the teachers and get a feel for their passion for their subject and how well they communicate with their pupils. You can meet current pupils and see how happy and confident they are. We talk to Dr Glenn Moodie, Headmaster at Truro High School for Girls to get some insider advice: “I think it is the most important decision a parent makes for their child and probably has the biggest impact on that child’s life. Independent schools are an increasingly popular choice for parents. Many offer bursaries and most are probably more affordable than people would imagine. At Truro High the result is a fantastic mix of girls from all walks of life around the world who will form friendships that will last for the rest of their lives.” Glenn explains that an open day is an important part of the decision making process and should help you draw up a short list of favourite schools. But it’s important to follow up with a tour on a normal day, when you can get a real feel for the school and how it operates. Trust your instincts; you will probably get a gut feel that it is the right school for your son or daughter. “And”, he says, “talk to parents of pupils to get first hand experience and recommendations. We get quite a few families moving down to Cornwall,
who decide on the school first and then find a home that suits the commute to it. A good school will be happy to put you in touch with parents to talk to. At Truro High we have even set up playdates for prospective pupils who are new to the area.” Don’t be tempted to pigeonhole your child too early on. Glenn explains: “Just because you wanted to be a train driver or a doctor when you were 10 doesn’t mean you will still have that ambition at 16 or 18. Make sure you get an all round education that will prepare you for whatever you decide to do. Most independent schools excel at this with a broad range of sciences, languages, music, drama and sports plus a host of extra curricular activities as well. Make sure you ask for a list at open day.” Check too how your child will fare if they are ‘just okay’ at music or sport. Are they destined for a life on the sidelines? The best schools cater for the fun players as well as the future Wimbledon champions. For more information on independent schools and a full list of those in Cornwall you can search on the Independent Schools Council site www.isc.co.uk or for a full list of all schools in Cornwall go to www.cornwall.gov.uk/education.

estled in the hills between Mevagissey and St Austell, The Seahorse is a fantastic indoor attraction with an wonderful range of things to do for all the family, no matter what the weather. The Seahorse has not one, but two, indoor swimming pools. The fun pool offers two slides and a waterfall feature while the lap pool is a fantastic choice for parents or serious swimmers. Have a dip, then carry on the fun at the amusement arcade. Head up to the first floor to find a twotiered soft play zone that the little ones will absolutely love. After working up an appetite – if you can drag them away from the fun – pop over to the Seahorse Café and Restaurant, a large, spacious restaurant with stunning views over Mevagissey Bay, serving fresh, daily specials and home-cooked meals. But the fun doesn’t stop inside. Step outside to make use of the newly resurfaced adult and children’s tennis courts, with racket and ball hire included in the price. Seasonal opening times operate, so before travelling check the website first for up-to-theminute times. Parking is no problem at The Seahorse too, and the cost of your ticket can be redeemed against purchases in The Seahorse.
The Seahorse can be hired for evening functions, including charity events, birthday parties, and even weddings. It’s particularly great for kids’ parties, offering a range of options. The professional team will be brimming with fun and energetic ideas to lead the party from start to finish, ensuring each and every guest experiences a truly special birthday party. Keep an eye on the website and Facebook pages for upcoming events over the next few months, including children’s musical sing-alongs and Christmas grottos. There’s a Swim Disco every Friday after school. Friday 30th October promises a Fireworks Spectacular (only £1 entry per person), while the following day is a free Halloween Party. There are prizes for best fancy dress, so get creative! Add to this party games and meal deals, and there’s all you need for a great time.

Safeguarding
YOUR FUTURE Jo Stone of Stephens Scown gives his advice on protecting your property investment.
A
s property prices increase, we see more families clubbing together to house three generations: a couple, their children and their elderly parents. Often the parents have sold their own property to help fund the purchase, perhaps with an annexe in which they will live rent-free. Frequently, it’s bought in the name of the couple only as an advance on inheritance. But if the couple then divorce or separate, where does that leave the parents? They are faced not only with the emotional strain of living with a couple going through a separation, but the loss of their home and investment. With the law of Equity, parents may have a claim if they put cash into the property or have paid for improvements; or if
they have acted to their own detriment (for example, sold their previous home) because of promises made.
Top tips
• Write it down: if there’s an arrangement,
record it in writing. A formal trust deed is the best answer so that all know where they stand • Don’t be shy: elderly parents should seek independent legal advice at an early stage and be prepared to intervene in a child’s divorce or separation • Keep paperwork: bank statements showing what has been paid are vital • See a specialist: this is a tricky area of law and an experienced family lawyer committed to finding a constructive solution is best placed to help

Doing time at BODMIN JAIL A great day out and an educational experience at the historic jail.
N
o-one wants their children to end up in prison; unless, of course, it’s a daytrip to Bodmin Jail! Here they’ll enjoy an exhilarating, yet educational, experience of what life behind bars was like in a bygone era. After visiting these historic and formidable buildings in the heart of Bodmin, it’ll be a memorable day they won’t forget about in a hurry. As well as seeing the many exhibits, cells and fascinating paraphernalia on a tour of the jail, they’ll learn about its interesting
history too. Bodmin Jail is ideal for school trips from primary age upwards, catering for parties of varying sizes, age groups and curriculum levels. For juniors, why not head to Bodmin Jail for a creative writing workshop? It’s an awe-inspiring location to stimulate the next generation of budding crime and historical fiction writers, while getting a mini history lesson at the same time. For pre-GCSE groups, activities at the jail can be tailored within the core curriculum, including sessions on Citizenship (dealing with Crime and Punishment), as well as ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’ or ‘It’s a Small World’ from the Inspire Curriculum. Activities can also tie in the Victorians: Evolution and Progress, Change and more. So if you’d like to motivate the kids with something a bit different or need one-to-one assistance with a project, call the team. It’s an amazing resource, right on your doorstep.
