The clocks have gone forward, the Easter holidays are here, and hopefully the sun will grace us with its presence too! We’re here to offer a few ideas to get out and about with the family this Easter. The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is always well worth a visit, with lots of cute critters to meet, from penguins to otters, not forgetting the seal pups, of course. We look ahead to Truro Festival, which is always a highlight of the calendar. Also in this issue, you’ll find another tasty recipe to try out with the children, courtesy of Little Kitchen Magicians. We introduce two exciting new items: ‘Book worms’, featuring some timeless classics from the bookshelves, and ‘Let’s create’, where we test our talents making a funny bunny face mask. Finally, check out the What’s On pages for lots more ideas of fun things to do over the holiday. So whatever the weather this Easter, rest assured there’s plenty to keep the whole family occupied. Enjoy!

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch at the Minack Join Mr Grinling performed by Craig Johnson (Squashbox & Kneehigh Theatre) and Mrs Grinling, Sharon Andrew (Scary Little Girls), and the newly-formed Minack Youth Theatre for a delightful musical adaptation inspired by the much-loved children’s story. Performances are from 29th March to 1st April at 7pm, with a 2pm matinee on 31st March. Mr Grinling the lighthouse keeper tends his light come rain or shine. Every day Mrs Grinling makes him a delicious lunch and sends it out across the sea to the lighthouse. But Mr Grinling isn’t the only one who enjoys the tasty food. Some greedy seagulls keep stealing his lunch! Can Mrs Grinling come up with an ingenious plan to make sure the lighthouse keeper gets his lunch? “We are delighted with our first ever Minack Youth Theatre production!” says Minack Director Zoë Curnow. “Over the past three months the children have worked alongside a professional production team including Director John Brolly and Musical Director Ben Sutcliffe (Rogue Theatre & The People’s String Foundation) to create their own unique performance and perform on our world famous stage.”

Family fun at The Park, Mawgan Porth With the days getting longer and the sun returning, it’s time to get out and enjoy the fabulous Cornish coast again. What better place to do so than The Park at Mawgan Porth, a fantastic family resort on the north coast, close to Newquay and all its attractions, from the zoo to the aquarium. This Easter, there’s a range of wonderful events for kids staying at The Park to enjoy, from nature club to beach craft, plus amazing facilities including indoor and outdoor pools and outdoor play equipment. Why not book now for your next holiday or, if you’re not tied to term-time, take advantage of a spring getaway? See the website for current special offers. But non-residents can also enjoy many of the onsite facilities throughout the school holidays too, including the Park Café, swimming pool, sauna and steam room. Why not make the most of the ‘swim and dine’ offer for only £10 (£5 kids) at selected times of the year? And, with so many great facilities onsite and a dog-friendly beach a short stroll away, it’s an ideal destination for out-of-season pre-school breaks, or perhaps for grandparents to spend quality time with the little ones, giving parents a brief rest too!

St Animate at Truro Cathedral Budding young filmmakers take note... you could be about to receive your lucky break! Use your imagination and craft skills to bring the tales of Cornish Saints to life using stop motion animation. Truro Cathedral is running fantastic workshops this Easter, from 4th to 6th April. Two sessions run each day (10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm) in the Cathedral Office, 14 St Mary’s Street. Ideal for children aged 7 to 11, they’ll love putting their creative talents to the test, while learning about our fascinating Cornish heritage at the same time. And once they’ve made their mini movie creations, you’ll get a chance to enjoy them too. Animations will premiere on Friday 8th April in the Truro Festival Marquee. Who knows? We might be witnessing the next generation of big film directors before they hit the big time! The sessions are fantastic value too, at only £4 per session. Places are limited are likely to fill up fast so we recommend booking now to avoid disappointment!

Explore Telegraph Museum Porthcurno’s new exhibitions Porthcurno, 1870. The most connected valley on the planet. Fast-forward to 2016, and discover where the roots of modern communication began. Travel to the edge of land, and meet the pioneers of global communication who made long distance messaging possible. Explore the new ‘Valley Tales & Trails’ temporary exhibition this April, and find out how Porthcurno’s role in shaping modern communication affected the local landscape and community. Be guided by stories of Porthcurno’s lasting legacy, and connect the outdoor landscape with the richly told stories. Imagine the buzz of pioneering communication in 1870, to the technical training college that continued here until 1993. This small Cornish coastal village changed the way people connect across the world. Wander around the coastal valley as part of the ‘Valley Trails’ element. Let the inspiring stories guide you on a path around one of Britain’s most beautiful and historically important coastal villages. Explore the ‘Valley Tales’ inside the Museum, and visualise how the valley looked when the training college was at its peak. In 20 years, the landscape in Porthcurno has changed phenomenally. From April, pick up your trail map from the Museum’s reception. The ‘Valley Trail’ is free, and the indoor ‘Valley Tales’ exhibition is included with Museum admission.

MAKING A Discover heart-warming stories this Easter at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

ì ABOVE Apricot the otter and penguins ê BELOW A rescued seal pup

S

et in 42 acres on Cornwall’s beautiful Helford estuary, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary really is a must-visit this Easter. With stunning countryside, incredible river views and, of course, the stars of the show themselves, this is a family day out that all will be talking about for many months to come. The array of furry friends are guaranteed to put a smile on your face, whatever your age – not just seals, but also sea lions, otters,

penguins, ponies and more. In fact, there are so many reasons to pay a visit – it’s heart-warming, educational, exciting in equal measure! Pup season for grey seals is during the months of September to February. So far this season, the sanctuary has rescued 61 grey seal pups. A pup may need rescuing for many reasons, from malnourishment after being separated from its mum, to more extensive injuries that require medical attention. A female grey seal pup rescued this season, Kerplunk, had a serious bite wound causing a broken rear left flipper. Sadly, the flipper had to be amputated. But luckily for Kerplunk, vet Paul Riley (who previously performed on another seal pup, Silkie, back in 2007) was able to successfully operate. Kerplunk has since learnt how to adapt her swimming style and was released back into the wild successfully in February this year. The sanctuary is also a permanent home to a community of adult seals, who for various reasons cannot be released back into the wild. A popular resident grey seal is Ray, who even has his own Facebook page! Ray was rescued from ê BELOW Kerplunk

Widemouth Bay in 2001 at approximately three weeks old. He was a malnourished pup showing some abnormal behaviour for a seal – he was chasing the public up and down the beach wanting to play! When he first arrived, it was apparent his behaviour was a little different to the other pups. First he was seen bumping into the side of the pool when he was in the nursery pool which suggested his sight was not in the best condition, he then started shedding his coat leaving him almost completely bald. It was found that Ray has an under-active thyroid, which was why he was bald, and therefore would have to be on treatment for the rest of his life and become a resident at the sanctuary. He also became quite cross eyed and showed some odd behaviour of rocking up and down like a rocking horse. The team discovered that Ray had a minor degree of brain damage, which explained a few of his not-so-seal-like behaviours! Ray has become a firm favourite with both visitors and the animal care team! Zoe Morris, Animal Care Assistant, says: “Ray is such a character. As well as his rocking horse impression, Ray likes to do pirouettes in the pool, roll around on the poolside and also carry around a buoy under

his flipper – as if he has a handbag! Ray also likes to stop the animal care team during pool cleaning and follow the hose wherever it goes and likes to have the water squirted in his mouth and onto his face! Being at the sanctuary now for a few years, Ray has also found a love interest in our oldest seal at the sanctuary, Sheeba. You will often see them lying together on the haul out or swimming together around the pool!” The sanctuary is home to 11 resident grey seals, five common seals and four sea lions from all over the world. It currently holds the most diverse collection of pinnipeds in the UK. So why not pay a visit to meet them all, along with the resident otters, penguins, ponies, goats and sheep! Daily interactive talks and feeding presentations make this a great day out for the family. Hear dramatic rescues and the residents’ stories brought to life! Don’t forget to check out the sanctuary’s website for fantastic 2016 events.

Look out!

Events will also take place in venues around Truro including Waterstones, Truro Library, Truro Cathedral, Truro Arts Shop, The Royal Cornwall Museum and Hall for Cornwall, so keep a look out for more details.

he city’s annual cultural festival, funded and delivered by Totally Truro Business Improvement District (BID), takes place from 2nd to 9th April, and is set to bring a hive of creative, cultural activity to the city over the Easter holidays. Inspired by the imagination and vibrancy of the people and places in and around Truro, this family festival is brimming with events to entertain, entice and excite all ages! From art and craft workshops to exhibitions, storytelling to puppet shows and pop-up theatre to dances in the streets, there’s something for everyone. Being the main hub for the festival, the marquee on Lemon Quay opens from 10am to 4pm each day with a café and regular workshops featuring illustrators, comic book illustrators, manga artists and makers suitable for children and adults. All workshops are £2.50, with no booking necessary. There will also be free storytelling on offer Monday to Friday afternoons in the marquee, in conjunction with Waterstones, followed by a free craft workshop based on

the theme of the book. The festival is thrilled to announce that Light Theatre is bringing its sell-out show, The Magic Beanstalk, to Truro Library on Saturday 9th April. Beautiful hand-carved puppets and amazing experiments are used to retell the classic story of Jack and the Giant who lives through the clouds and over the rainbow. The show, designed for children between the ages of 5 and 11, is a unique blend of theatre and science made in Cornwall by a team who have worked alongside Kneehigh Theatre, The Little Angel Theatre and The Eden Project. The production links directly to the UK Primary Curriculum in English, Science, Design and Technology, Art and Design. Tickets are £7 adult, £5 under 14, and family ticket (two adults and two children) £22 and are available from www.crbo.co.uk or Tourist Information Centres across Cornwall.

Riveting reads from the bookshelves Celebrating some timeless classics that literally jump off the page… in fact, three of them are headed for the Cornish stage this spring!

5 MINUTES’ PEACE Jill Murphy

GANGSTA GRANNY David Walliams and Tony Ross

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Jill Murphy’s muchloved family favourite, Five Minutes’ Peace. A tale that parents everywhere can relate to, Murphy recounts one mum’s challenge to enjoy a brief moment of peace in an ever-so-bubbly bath. So far the series has sold over five million copies, and with the release of this beautifully illustrated special edition, no doubt many more children and parents will fall in love with the Large family. Jill Murphy, who lives in Cornwall, is also the author behind the spell-binding Worst Witch series, a big hit with older children.

The number one bestseller from David Walliams, who has taken the children’s literature world by storm, teaches us never to underestimate our grandparents! Funny and touching in equal measure, Gangsta Granny is delivered with Walliams’ typical eccentricity. Whether your children love the book already or are new to the story, they’re bound to have a fantastic time at the stage show, headed to Hall For Cornwall this spring (13th to 17th April).

WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury

THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER’S LUNCH Rhonda and David Armitage

Winner of the Smarties Prize in 1989, this wonderful book has captured the hearts of many. The story of a dad and three kids on their hunt to find a bear is an essential addition to any bookshelf. Fans of the book will love Michael Rosen’s Bear Hunt, Chocolate Cake and Bad Things, a ‘hands-on, interactive and walkthrough story trail’, at Camborne College in May – not to be missed!

Another timeless classic; with the upcoming adaptation coming to the Minack, we thought it time to revisit this magical book by Rhonda Armitage, brought colourfully to life with husband David’s vivid illustrations. The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch tells the story of Mr Grinling’s daily challenge to save his lunch from pesky seagulls (a trial familiar to many!). Turn to page 4 to learn more about the stage show.

Step 3

Step 1

Step 2

Take the piece of coloured card in the colour of your bunny’s fur and draw or print the outline of a bunny head on it. Ask your grownup to cut out the head shape.

Draw on eye holes where your eyes are and cut them out.

Draw some ears and a nose on a different coloured piece of card and cut these out. Cut each pipe cleaner into three for the bunny’s whiskers.

Step 4

Step 5

Step 6

Ask your grownup to make some holes in each side of your mask by pushing a pen through the card into the rubber. Then glue on your ears, nose and whiskers.

Cut out two small white rectangles for your rabbit’s teeth and glue them on. Then you can draw the mouth on top of the teeth with a thick black pen.

Cut two pieces of string long enough that you can tie them around the back of your head and thread them through the holes on either side of your mask.

Fabulous

FISHCAKES

Fun to make together and delicious too!

W

e’ve teamed up with Lizzie Heath’s Little Kitchen Magicians for this great recipe to involve children of any age. This tasty fishcake – crispy outside yet soft middle – is a delicious family dish; and, as a 10-year-old told Lizzie just this week, “These are the best fishcakes ever!” “Not only is it fun and colourful”, says Lizzie, “it allows kids to explore local foods, ask questions about food origins, strengthen fine motor skills and, very importantly, create cooking memories with parents, grandparents, siblings or friends.”

Meet Lizzie

Little Kitchen Magicians provide healthy, fun and educational pop-up cookery workshops for children aged 2+, families and parents with weaning babies, preschools, primary schools and more. With two children of her own, Lizzie aims to inspire and educate children and families about healthy eating. Little Kitchen Magicians deliver Cornwall Healthy Schools ‘Cooking in the Curriculum’ teacher training and are a Children’s University ‘Learning Destination’. Lizzie does birthday parties (aged 4+) too!
