Where does the time go? It seems that Easter has barely passed and already it’s half-term! So we’re back to provide a few more suggestions to keep the family entertained. From Kernow Adventure Park, a wonderful freshwater watersports centre, to the Swamp Circus summer camp, we’ve got it covered. We also look at group activities to help build children’s self-esteem, social skills and physical stamina, including martial arts and percussion workshops. Budding young dancers will be delighted to hear that Italia Conti, the prestigious dance school with alumni including Pixie Lott and Naomi Campbell, is coming to Penzance. And we take a look at the fabulous new Amphitheatre at Trebah Garden, bringing a whole host of outdoor performances to enjoy this summer. Tasty Treats returns with a trio of delicious smoothies to create with the kids, courtesy of HYLI: simple to make, healthy and delicious too! Book Worms is back too, as we review a selection of popular reads, some with a Cornish slant. And last but not least, check out the What’s On pages for lots more ideas of fun things to do over the next few months. Enjoy!

A lake with a difference Hidden in a 21-acre site around a disused granite quarry, Kernow Adventure Park is one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets. A tranquil freshwater lake provides the setting for an on-water inflatable assault course, open water swimming and wakeboarding. Ideal for family days out and thrill-seekers alike, you can enjoy the activities whatever the weather. With its own beach, this is a little oasis and a safe playground. There are no tides, no rip currents, and definitely no jellyfish! Plunge into tranquility beneath the imposing, vertical cliff faces in this sheltered sanctuary. Have a go at cable wakeboarding, an exciting sport using a cable tow system to pull you across the lake while riding a board (like a snowboard). There are two cables, both with floating features, a skate park on water allowing riders to perform tricks without any danger of landing on hard ground. Why not take on the water assault course Kernow Wipeout with water slides, balance beams, a giant floating trampoline, climbing wall and more! The new clubhouse, with a licensed bar and ample seating is the perfect place to relax with a drink or meal and enjoy watching the action and stunning views.

Protecting your FAMILY In spite of today’s healthier lifestyles and improved medical technology, it’s a shocking fact that on average, almost 47 adults die every day (aged 18-44 years) according to the UK Office for National Statistics, in 2013.
I
f the unthinkable happened and your partner died, quite apart from the emotional turmoil of the bereavement, how would your family cope financially? Even with a Life Assurance policy in place to help pay off your mortgage, if there are children to provide for, how would you cope with the demands of everyday necessities, such as food, clothes, utility bills, childcare or additional expenses like holidays and birthdays? If you think these costs may not add up to much, then consider the findings from the LV= Cost of a Child report, January 2015. The survey looked at the cost of raising a child to the age of 21 and approximated this figure to be over £229,000 – equating to more than £200 per week! That’s a significant sum to find should an income stream end due to the untimely death of a parent...
Family Income Benefit gives you peace of mind If you’re a parent with young children, Family Income Benefit is a specific plan that provides a regular, tax-free, monthly (or annual) payment for your dependants. The idea is that it should be arranged to pay out until your children have grown up, so it’s well-suited to those with young families and is often taken out over a 10 to 20-year term or whatever is appropriate for your children’s ages. Harris Begley Independent Financial Advisors have offices throughout Cornwall and can give you specialist advice about protecting your family’s needs to give you peace of mind for the future. Become the performer you’ve always wanted to be as Italia Conti comes to Penzance!
T
Join in!
Classes will be available to all ages from 2 years up and there will be links to the main school in London for any budding performers.
wo sisters from Penzance are bringing Italia Conti, the world’s oldest performing arts school, to Cornwall this September. Italia Conti has been producing incredible talent since 1911, boasting alumni such as Pixie Lott, Naomi Campbell and Russell Brand. The sisters, Charlotte and Ella Gilling, are excited to be collaborating with such a prestigious institution. Charlotte says, “We are both incredibly excited to be working with Italia Conti as well as bringing opportunities to Cornwall that are traditionally only available in London. As a family, we have strong links to the school so we are looking forward to bringing its name and values to the south west.” The sisters have extensive experience within the arts. Charlotte recently graduated from the University of East London with an Urban Dance degree and Ella, who currently studies at Italia Conti, featured in CBBC’s The
Next Step. The siblings have already made great strides in the arts in Cornwall with their Penzance dance school, Believe, which runs a charity summer dance workshop and show every August. Charlotte and Ella are convinced that all aspects of the performing arts help to build confidence and self-esteem so, whether someone is a beginner or has previous experience, everyone is welcome. The Italia Conti Associate School will be opening on 17th September. Classes will be held on Saturdays between 9-5 during term-time, covering various aspects of dance, acting and singing, with the option of taking exams (ISTD, LAMDA).

A PIONEER
in its class The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer adds a sporty edge to the family car.
U
sually in this magazine we focus on all things that kids love, so it may come as a surprise that this sporty new edition from the experts at BMW has found its way into Kids Love Cornwall Living. While, admittedly, this looks to be a car for the discerning sports enthusiast, the new 2 Series Gran Tourer is a family car infused with just a touch of style. As you approach your new BMW, you’ll pinch yourself as you remember that it’s not a sports model; from the trademark twin kidney grill at the front, shortened front and aerodynamic silhouette, to it’s inclined windscreen and wide profile, this car will forever remind you that, thanks to the 2 Series Gran Tourer, having to choose between practicality and style is a thing of the past. Inside, you’ll find a wealth of storage options. There’s room for up to three child seats, with an ISOFIX system built into the second row. And, if you’re carrying more legs than luggage, the third row sacrifices nothing when it comes to headroom for rear passengers. With so many on board, ride comfort can often deteriorate, however the intelligent BMW xDrive four-wheel drive system, in conjunction with Dynamic
Stability Control, makes every trip a smooth sail, on even the trickiest terrain. Utilise the standard BMW navigation system; park distance control and iDrive system – designed to make navigating your intuitive digital dashboard a breeze. Sink into the outstanding upholstery as you soak up the usual comforts and commodities that you’d expect from a manufacturer of such high calibre. All of this, in a car designed with the latest space creating technology, makes the 2 Series Gran Tourer a true pioneer in family transport. BMW stand for comfort, style and uncompromising performance, to which this car testifies. If dynamic appearance combined with unprecedented storage and functionality speaks to you, then you too can be part of an automotive revolution. Take one out for a spin and you’ll see that, as a family car, the 2 Gran Tourer Series is truly at the top of its class.

THEATRE Trebah Amphitheatre: a unique performance space set against the stunning coastal backdrop of an award-winning Cornish garden.
J
oin the audience this summer at Trebah Amphitheatre for a vibrant programme of family theatre! The season begins with a visually stunning stage version of Antonia Barber’s classic Cornish children’s story The Mousehole Cat on 27th and 28th May. Using hand-crafted puppetry, as well as a talented team of actors, the drama tells the story of how the west Cornwall village of Mousehole is saved from desperate famine by the brave actions of fisherman Tom Bawcock... and his faithful cat, Mowzer. Expect battles with the fearsome Great Storm-Cat, seven sorts of fish and lashings of stargazy pie! Throughout the summer Trebah Amphitheatre hosts a series of free events for garden visitors aged 5-11. Introduction to the Arts starts with harpist Eleanor Turner performing her stunning new work, Raindrops Shine Like Pearls, on 25th June. At the end of each performance Eleanor welcomes young audience members on to the stage to play a kid-sized harp. Little Trebiggan bring their Cornish tale, Wennie and Jago’s Giant Adventure, to the stage on 30th July. A fun-filled introduction
to the beautiful Cornish language, this puppet show is sure to delight kids and adults of all ages. Squashbox Theatre perform their tangle of puppetry, storytelling and live music, Tales from the Trees, on 30th July. Kids learn how to identify different trees, discover the wonder of photosynthesis, gasp at deadly carnivorous plants and watch flowers growing before their very eyes. As Cornwall based Illyria celebrate their 25th year of open-air touring, they bring Roald Dahl’s heartwarming and comic story of Danny the Champion of the World to life on stage. One night, Danny awakes to find his father has not returned from a night of poaching. Fearing that his father may be in danger, Danny sets off to rescue him. Soon Danny finds himself masterminding the most incredible and exciting plot ever attempted against the evil local landowner Victor Hazell!

Right riveting reads for kids of all ages Crazy kids, fabulous facts, toddler tantrums and the scary sea. THE STORM LION OF PENZANCE
THE WORLD’S WORST CHILDREN
Troon Harrison
David Walliams and Tony Ross
Set in Victorian times, this is the story of Tom, a boy terrified of the sea. When poverty forces his widowed mother to move them from the English countryside to find work in the fish-sheds of Penzance, Tom is confronted by his worst fear. He draws comfort, courage and strength from the statues of the lions on Penzance promenade but when a fierce storm sweeps his uncle’s fishing boat from its moorings, Tom’s character is tested to its limits.
The latest release from bestselling children’s author David Walliams introduces five gruesome girls and five beastly boys in ten cautionary stories. The world’s worst children include TV super fan Sofia Sofa, so stuck to the sofa that she might well turn into one; Dribbling Drew, whose dribble gets him into terrible trouble; and Blubbering Bertha, a girl who tells terrific tales and bawls her head off. A collection of fabulously funny, mightily mischievous tales, illustrated in glorious colour by the wonderful Tony Ross.
PIP AND POSY: THE NEW FRIEND
A CHILDREN’S HISTORY OF CORNWALL
Axel Scheffler
Peggy Burns
A brand new book in the popular series about the dramas of toddler life created by Axel Scheffler. Pip and Posy are having a great day at the seaside, digging in the sand and collecting shells. While Posy has a nap, Pip makes friends with a boy called Zac, who has lots of fun toys and beach gear. When Posy wakes up, she finds that Pip is more interested in playing with Zac than her. This is a gently funny story about navigating friendship and being kind, even when every bone in your body is telling you to scream with frustration!
Starting at 500BC, this brilliant all round history of Cornwall is full of fantastic facts, photos and things to look out for as you travel around. Have you ever wondered what it would have been like living in Cornwall when the Romans arrived? What was it like working deep underground in the tin mines? Written by local authors in conjunction with educational and local history experts, this book recounts some of the weird and wonderful traditions that exist as part of our heritage. With a helpful timeline, fun imaginary accounts, cool old photos and amazing top facts, you’ll discover things you never knew about Cornwall!
