Kids love Stick Man and he will be at Eden this half term. There’s plenty on offer with a Stick Man trail, Stick Man inspired craft workshops, a Poohsticks challenge and film screenings throughout the day. Older children can learn survival techniques and Crocodile Joe returns to Eden with his mini beasts and menagerie of snakes – get up close if you dare! And, of course, all the wonder of Eden’s biomes, the Rainforest canopy walkway, and the final chance for some ice skating. Also in this issue, take the children cycling at the National Trust’s Penrose Estate near Helston with no traffic to worry about, or park the car and walk along the coast path to Cadgwith. We have a delicious flapjack recipe to help keep the kids energy levels up during your half term outings and check out the What’s On pages for lots more ideas of fun and interesting things to do over the holiday.

Much ado about Shakespeare On the 400-year anniversary of the death of The Bard himself, William Shakespeare, the Royal Shakespeare Company is doing something very special in commemoration. From the 10th to 14th May, the RSC is bringing A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Hall For Cornwall along with 29 young pupils from Launceston College as part of its national effort to get more young children involved in the arts.
Prior to the performances, members of the RSC will visit the schools involved to rehearse and prepare with the children, learning their lines together, teaching them a fairy song and a specially devised dance routine. Jacqui O’Hanlon, RSC Director of Education, says: “2016 is a very special year as we celebrate the legacy of a man whose work, 400 years on, is still studied and performed the world over. There are so many ways that schools can join in our celebrations throughout 2016 – big and small – but we are thrilled that for the first time schoolchildren from all over the UK will get the chance to appear alongside RSC actors on a touring production.”

Make connections at the Telegraph Museum Porthcurno With its recent appearance on the BBC’s Great British Railway Journeys programme, there’s never been more interest towards the Telegraph Museum Porthcurno. Showcasing the vibrant history of telecommunications in the West Country, the Telegraph Museum will entertain from dad to daughter. With demonstrations to take part in, informative talks and interactive installations all through the museum, there’s plenty to keep the family entertained. Cornwall played an impactful role in the world of telecommunications with some of the first transatlantic cables coming to shore at Porthcurno. The museum holds many exhibits displaying the history of communications from Morse code and wireless communication to secret World War II tunnels and highlighting how Porthcurno became “a hub of high-tech global communications; a Victorian Silicon Valley”. By the end, fourteen undersea cables connected it to every corner of the globe, making Porthcurno one of the most connected places in the pre-Internet world. Be surprised and inspired by Cornwall’s hidden history!

e were delighted to chat to David Page, owner of Porthleven Cycle Hire. “The Lizard is a fabulous place to get out on a bike. I was lucky enough to grow up in Helston and have always cycled a lot. You see so much more of the unique scenery: every route seems to have glorious sea views, and it’s healthy! My favourite route is through Penrose, but you can’t beat a trip across Goonhilly Downs to Roskilly’s. You really feel you
deserve that ice-cream or cream tea after a good bike ride!”
Off Road
The stunning National Trust property at Penrose in Helston has routes to suit all abilities. Trails encircle Loe Pool creating a spectacular 8-mile loop with some stunning coastal views. The routes have been graded and colour coded by difficulty to help you explore. There’s a wide, family-friendly trail,

There is the Stables Cafe, with some terrific pubs and eateries in Porthleven, or the famous ‘Spingo’ ale at the Blue Anchor in Helston for some well-earned refreshment. “We are moving our cycle hire base to the boating lake in Helston to make access to Penrose easier to reach for our cyclists. Cadgwith &
POLTESCO A great family walk with plenty to see. This walk is 2.6 miles.
A
walk over tranquil heathland with spectacular views between two picturesque fishing coves. A colourful shingle beach at Carleon Cove dams a small pool where trout can be seen jumping to catch flies. Although this walk is not buggy friendly, it’s ideal for families with older children with varying terrain and a beach about mid way. An hourly bus service from Helston serves both ends of the route, so why not leave the car behind for the day The Coast Path passes through spectacular cli and managed for wildlife with the help of some four legged friends The National Trust has Shetland ponies who help to keep the cliffs above Poltesco in tip top condition for a host of rare species, including tiny dwarf rush and twin headed clover. ook out for heath spotted and early purple orchids. 1. In the car park in Ruan Minor take the path beside the village hall, turning right on the road and then bear left after the corner shop. 2. After the village shop, carry on ahead beside the chapel to take the footpath dropping downhill, crossing the footbridge and continuing along the path to come out on the road beyond. 3. Turn left on the road, go over the bridge, and then take the footpath on the left a moment later, going through the gate to
follow the path along the hedge and past the car park down to Cadgwith. 4. Turn left to walk through Cadgwith and uphill to Corner House. Turn right to follow the South West Coast Path. o past the old lookout hut and along the path worn by centuries of walkers to the stile at the top. Crossing it, follow the right hand hedge, taking another stile to carry on uphill to the headland above ildown Cove. 5. Carry on along the Coast Path past Enys Head, turning right after the kissing gate to drop gently downhill to Poltesco. 6. As the path descends to Poltesco, turn right down the steps and cross the bridge to take the path on the right for a gentle tour of the remains of the serpentine works. 7. Follow the path through the remains of the serpentine works and on to the beach. Walk up the rock slipway to join the Coast Path above. Turn left downhill, past the old forge and back to the bridge. Climb the steps and turn right up the path, past Carleon House and follow the track over another wooden bridge to join a lane heading left. 8. Turn left again opposite Poltesco House and follow the lane Poltesco ane over the bridge, past the mill and steeply uphill past illstone Cottage.
