PROUD TO BE PART OF
With the holiday season gathering momentum, it’s time to create your essential summer checklist: sun cream, hats, and (of course) a copy of Kids Love, as usual packed with ideas for family adventures! Days out across Cornwall, a tasty recipe and summer page-turners... you’ll find them all in the following pages. Camel Creek Adventure Park presents its ‘Summer of Science’ (page 8), promising to both educate and enrapture the little ones. All the family can make a splash at Retallack’s wacky waterpark (page 7). And why not pay a visit to Newquay Zoo to meet the exotic inhabitants, from zebras to lions (page 17). We love open-air theatre and, in our completely impartial view, nowhere does it better than Cornwall! Find out what’s happening at Trebah Garden’s fabulous amphitheatre (page 10). It’s barbeque season, so we enlisted a little help from our favourite chef, Lizzie of Little Kitchen Magicians, to cook up some summer sizzler burgers (page 18). They are homemade and support our Cornish farmers and producers – what’s not to love? And in ‘Bookworms’, we suggest some more great reads from the shelf (page 15) – so, when not out exploring, you can find a spot of shade and delve into a good book. Whilst you’re out and about across the Duchy, keep a look out for copies of the brand new 2017/2018 edition of our handy pocket-sized Kids Love Cornwall Living guide, with yet more ideas to plan your day out at a glance. From all of us here at Kids Love, have a fantastic summer!

New business adventure for mum, with help from Outset Cornwall Marine scientist and mum of two, Rhiannon Pipkin, has just launched a fun new craft business, inspired by spending quality time with her children thanks to support from business start-up experts, Outset Cornwall. Feltosaur on Tour, a noneedle dinosaur craft kit that conforms to British toy safety standards is a totally safe activity for young children to engage in as they create their own unique felt dinosaur. While searching the Internet for new business start-up support, Rhiannon came across Outset Cornwall. Impressed by the fully-funded advice and guidance provided, Rhiannon tells us: “I was really blown away by the level of support on offer. Going to workshops and being surrounded by like-minded people was really helpful, as they were all enthusiastic and supportive, with amazing ideas.” Outset Cornwall is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, DCH and the Outset Foundation.

Judy Scrimshaw’s latest book is hot off the press! Morgowr and the Leatherback Turtle is the latest tale from Judy Scrimshaw, recounting the adventures of Morgowr (Cornish for ‘sea giant’), our legendary Cornish plesiosaur. In this eagerly anticipated sequel to The Ballad of Morgowr, our returning hero rescues an adult leatherback turtle off Lizard Point, who is in distress from eating jetsam, mistaking a floating plastic bag for food. This leads her onto an epic Caribbean adventure with a flotilla of plesiosaurs, a submarine volcano and endangered hatchling turtles! Written in rhyming verse, the book introduces a moral about the dangers of flotsam and jetsam, alongside additional fact pages for older children and adults. Morgowr and the Leatherback Turtle officially launches on Saturday 22nd July from 1pm to 2pm at the Festival of Children’s Literature Story Day at Kestle Barton, Manaccan, Helston. The festival itself is open from 10.30am to 4pm and admission is free, so we look forward to seeing you there!

Going underground at Poldark Mine With the recent heat wave that we’ve experienced, you’ll no doubt be looking for family days out that provide a bit of shade from the sun. One of our favourites is a trip to Poldark Mine, set in four acres of riverside woodland and gardens on the River Cober valley. Cornwall’s only complete underground tin mine, just outside of Helston, really is unique – an exceptionally well-preserved piece of Cornish heritage that offers the chance to discover more about your history, with fun and education in equal measure. Explore the underground labyrinths and caverns, learn about tin production, marvel at the mighty mid-century beam engine and explore the museum and open-air exhibits. The underground tours are considered to be “one of the two most atmospheric mine tours in Europe,” by the former chairman of English Heritage, perfect for getting those ‘wow’ reactions from the kids. What’s more, a brass band plays at the mine most Sundays from 2pm to 4pm, ensuring your experience of Cornish heritage is accompanied by wonderful traditional music. Up-to-date details can be found on Poldark Mine’s Facebook page.

Securing the keys to your new family home
So, you’ve found the dream family home. But buying and selling property is stressful. Finding yourself in a chain of transactions can feel as if you’re wading through mud while wearing shackles. Suddenly you’re waiting on people in different parts of the country, and finding out reliable information is tough. Stress is usually caused by two things: lack of control, and setting your heart on certain moving dates. The moving date will be determined by the slowest person in the chain. No matter how much other people want (or demand!) a certain date, if Bob in Newcastle still awaits his mortgage offer, it isn’t going to happen. The best way to keep your sanity is to be very flexible, and instruct a pro-active solicitor who will chase on your behalf.
For advice on any of the above issues and to discuss your individual circumstances, call Kevin Craner on 01288 353542 or visit www.sampson-solicitors.co.uk

This season, Novel English is offering a wide variety of authors and genres to choose from including Black Beauty, The Hobbit, Missee Lee, The Hound of the Baskervilles, novels by Henry Treece, Tom’s Midnight Garden, and The Secret Garden, plus the established famous writers courses, which includes Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and many more. MAKE A SPLASH! From excited little ones to energetic teens, there’s something for everyone at Retallack Resort & Spa this summer.
R
etallack Resort & Spa has everything you need to enjoy a family holiday. With luxury lodges large enough to accommodate the whole family, as well as those with nurseries and even one designed especially for families with twins, your stay is guaranteed to be comfortable. There are activities to keep children of all ages entertained, including ‘The Den’ kids’ club, with its full timetable of activities, as well as the soft play area and outdoor playground. And, if parents fancy some grown-ups-only time, make use of the babysitting service to enjoy a romantic evening where two’s company. But the real pièce de résistance is the huge, ‘total wipeout’ style floating inflatable Aqua Park – even bigger and better for 2017. Beloved of both children and the young at heart, it features a giant trampoline, catapult, water wheel, ‘stepping stones’ climbing wall, slides and lots more. Race your friends around the course, watch them wipeout, try and beat the obstacles and hurl yourself into the water – more fun than you could dream of! And for younger guests, the first session of the day is exclusively for 6 to 11 year olds and their parents or guardians.
The fun doesn’t stop there – why not carve up the lake at the Wake Park, give stand-up paddleboarding a try, roll around in a water zorb or surf the FlowRider? What better way to wear the little ones out? And after all that, you’ll be ready to grab a bite to eat at the Beach Café. If staying on dry land is more your cup of tea, enjoy a round on the pitch and putt course, or even a game of tennis. Why not enjoy a relaxing morning’s fishing in the site’s fully stocked coarse fishing lake? Really, there are many ways to enjoy a holiday at Retallack Resort & Spa, but not just for the kids – so why not book your break and let the team take care of the rest?

A show
BENEATH THE STARS Over the coming summer holidays, why not check out Trebah Garden’s full summer line up of outdoor entertainment?
T
rebah Garden, with acres of lush, colour-adorned walkways to explore, makes for a fantastic summer afternoon with the kids and this summer, Trebah is pleased to announce a full line up of live music, comedy and traditional theatre, including many family shows. Al fresco theatre has become a great Cornish tradition. It’s a brilliant way to get the whole clan together, whether it’s in the daytime or the evening; bring blankets, fizzy-pop for the little ones and wine for yourselves, and prepare for an exciting walk through the garden, before a performance under the stars. You won’t need a seat, as the Trebah amphitheatre has raised terraces and hireable back support cushions, and forget about bringing a picnic, too – Trebah Kitchen offers a different street food dish for each performance, but you’ll need to book in advance. With so much to see, do and explore, you might as well make a day of it, especially as
tickets are valid for garden entry from 2pm. You can even bring the dog, but be aware that four-legged friends are unable to attend the evening performances. Shows this season include those from award-winning local companies, such as The Emperor’s New Clothes from Illyria and The Third Policeman from Miracle Theatre. Or, if innovative puppetry sounds like something you’d like to see, be sure to catch the talented Smoking Apples. Daytime performances inlcude Craig from Squashbox, with his Curious Creatures show. Young families can look forward to Folksy Theatre’s Smartest Giant in Town, which brings the characters of Julia Donaldson’s famous book to life, just before the school holidays come to an end. For full details of the coming season and how to book, visit the Trebah Garden website.

P
enair is an 11 to 16 mixed academy based in the heart of Truro. We catch up with Headteacher, James Davidson, to discover more about the school and its ethos. “Our purpose is to create a caring learning community where everyone is valued for who they are and encouraged to reach their full potential and go beyond what they expect from themselves,” explains Mr Davidson. “We believe school life must be a positive and memorable experience that will ensure our students have rewarding and successful lives and are fully prepared for the future.” Penair nurtures the strong ties it has made with its partner primary schools and works closely with them throughout the year to ensure a smooth and supportive transition to Penair. As Mr Davidson tells us, excellent communication is the foundation on which the school philosophy is built. “For the children we welcome outside of the designated area who have not benefited from our comprehensive range of transition activities, our support team have structures in place to give you peace of mind.” Penair’s latest Ofsted inspection has recognised it as a good school, and views Penair as a courteous community, with proud pupils who understand the importance of fundamental British values. “Our caring ethos makes Penair a safe and
happy place to learn, and our students thrive in this supportive environment,” adds Mr Davidson. If you’d like to discover more about Penair, the school has organised an open evening on Thursday 21st September, from 5pm to 8pm, where parents and children have the opportunity to speak with staff and students and take part in a range of exciting and engaging activities, as well as viewing showcase lessons.

ONE SILVER SUMMER
Rachel Hickman
THE PIRATE BLUNDERBEARD
Amy Sparkes & Ben Cort
A beautifully realised, fairy tale romance, One Silver Summer is the debut novel from emerging talent Rachel Hickman, inspired by her family’s annual visits to the Roseland. This moving comingof-age story, set in an authentic and atmospheric Cornish landscape, follows heroine Sass as she encounters her first true experiences of loss and love. No stranger to children’s publishing, Rachel has worked with many of the greats, including Roald Dahl, and set up her own acclaimed publishing house, before stepping into the limelight.
This fun-loving pirate takes you on an epic adventure in which the ‘Worst. Pirate. Ever.’ tries to win the Pirate of the Year Award. To accomplish this, he only needs to fight an enormous sea monster, beat his brother at something and find some hidden treasure… simple! A rip-roaring read that the children will love, featuring lively illustrations from Ben Cort, follow the larger-than-life pirate’s journey and see how he fares.
AN YNYS DHU
MORGOWR AND THE LEATHERBACK TURTLE
(TINTIN IN CORNISH)
Hergé
Judy Scrimshaw
The perfect book for those who would like to practise reading in Cornish and learn some new words and phrases. The story follows renowned hero, Tintin, as he embarks on yet another adventure, but this time translated into our very own Cornish language! The translation is brilliant and the story superb, and with the illustrations, even if you don’t understand every word, you won’t get lost!
Morgowr, the legendary Cornish plesiosaur, returns in this epic new adventure from Judy Scrimshaw. Morgowr rescues a distressed leatherback turtle, before embarking on a Caribbean adventure featuring baby turtles, a flotilla of plesiosaurs and a submarine volcano called Kick ’em Jenny. A beautifully illustrated and written rhyming tale for children and grown-ups.

ith the arrival of summer comes the inevitable question of what to do to keep everyone suitably amused. While the beach beckons, there are many other exciting adventures available, such as a visit to the ever-enthralling Newquay Zoo. So why not join the team on Safari this summer holiday? Grown-ups can relax with a yummy Prosecco cream tea at just £7.50 before heading out to tackle the maze and Tarzan trail. Don’t forget to swoop by and say hello to the Ural owl before whizzing down the slide. Spot the zebras in the paddock and see if you can count their stripes! Don’t forget to make a stop at Lemur Island where you will meet some furry friends, the ring tailed lemurs. You might even catch them having their lunch; their favourite is peas and sweetcorn. W
ith the arrival of the summer holidays and the recent heat wave, it’s well and truly barbeque season – so we spoke to our favourite chef, Lizzie of Little Kitchen Magicians, who shared her recipe for delicious homemade Cornish beef burgers. “Homemade burgers are much healthier,” says Lizzie, “and making your own provides the perfect opportunity to support your local butchers or farm shops, such as Trevaskis or Brian Etherington.”
