Christmas is such a magical time for children. As I type, my own two little ones are busy practising for their nativity and carol concert, filling the house with merry tunes. Their Christmas lists have been written and we are counting down the days on the advent calendar with excited anticipation. The tree will go up shortly and they will take great delight in decorating it (while I desperately try not to rearrange the decs into some semblance of order!). This issue we have some great ideas to keep the little ones happy over Christmas from festive produtions to Santa days and more. Baking with children over the holidays is fun and fills the house with the glorious smell of spice and warm dough – turn to page 100 for a recipe you can all enjoy making and eating. If the excitment gets too much then why not get cosy in front of the fire with a good book... need some inspiration? Turn to page 99 for some of our favourites. Happy holidays!

Beat the property chain bullies Being in a chain of property transactions is stressful, so the last thing you need is the added burden of a chain bully. You may have encountered one; they’ll abruptly issue demands and expect everyone else to fit in with what they want, when they want it. Worse, they’ll often threaten to withdraw if they don’t get their own way, wasting everyone’s money.

St Ives in December… there’s nothing like it!
Chain bullies cause a great deal of stress and upset for clients, but there is a simple solution. Their power comes through contacting people directly or via an estate agent. Therefore, you should make it clear that you’ll only communicate via your solicitor and, if necessary, block their number. When faced with taking on a solicitor, unreasonable demands usually turn out to be nothing but hot air.
The festivities begin on Super Saturday when Father Christmas arrives by boat to meet the St Ives Mermaid in his Winter Wonderland Grotto on the Wharf. It’s also the launch of the popular Town Treasure Hunt, and voting for the Best Shop Window Display begins, both of which are great fun for everyone. Buy unique and unusual Christmas presents at the bazaars and craft fairs taking place around town and, for true family entertainment, book your tickets for the KidzRUs pantomime’s Jack & the Beanstalk, and the Boathouse Puppet Theatre’s Three Little Pigs.

Mowzer’s back for Christmas! Cousin Jack’s The Mousehole Cat is back by popular demand, returning to Mousehole this Christmas.
T
his festive season, Cousin Jack’s present a magical puppet and live action production of Antonia Barber’s classic children’s story, The Mousehole Cat, at the Solomon Browne Memorial Hall, Mousehole – the village’s former pilchard works. Following a sold-out Christmas residency last year, Mowzer is back by popular demand. Cousin Jack’s Artistic Director, Guy Watson tells us: “Enthusiasm and feedback for the show was so great that we just couldn’t stop Mowzer making a return journey home again this year.” He adds: “The show was so popular with educators in the audience wanting to bring some of our magic to their school that we had to create new children’s workshops this year! All of these have now been snapped up, but do register your school’s interest with us for next year!” This year’s adaptation features many familiar faces, including Mowzer of course, in the safe hands of the hugely talented Bec Applebee, while Bryher Flanders returns as the most loveable Cornish fishwife Dolly, who steers the audience through Mowzer and Tom’s epic adventure. New for this year is a folk driven live acoustic soundtrack, taking influence from traditional Cornish songs performed by local musician, Richard Trethewey.
Families will again have time to marvel at Mousehole’s spectacular lights display, before taking their seats to hear how this west Cornwall village was saved from desperate famine by the brave actions of fisherman, Tom Bawcock, and his faithful cat, Mowzer. Based on a well-known Cornish legend, Antonia Barber’s uniquely heartwarming story is sure to warm the cockles of your heart, almost as much as a hefty portion of stargazy pie! The Mousehole Cat runs from 17th to 31st December, and this year, on 24th and 31st December, Cousin Jack’s have also included two relaxed performances, perfect for adults and children who might benefit from a more relaxed environment, or are uncomfortable with sudden lighting changes or loud noises. These are, of course, open to everyone.

THE MOUSEHOLE CAT
Antonia Barber and Nicola Bayley With the play adaptation returning to Mousehole this Christmas (see page 96), not to mention the wealth of other productions taking place across the Duchy (see this year’s Christmas cover feature from page 16), we revisit this children’s classic. A wonderful story to enjoy throughout the winter months, and any other time of year, is The Mousehole Cat. This truly iconic story speaks to the Cornish soul as the sea is captured perfectly in both the artwork and the story. Whether you are reading this again or sharing it for the first time with a loved one, this book is the apex of Cornish storytelling. So, why not wait for a particularly stormy night and experience this book as Tom Bawcock would have, amidst Cornish wind and rain.
DUFFY’S LUCKY ESCAPE!
Ellie Jackson and Liz Oldmeadow Starring Duffy the sea turtle, this book is aimed at 3 to 10 year olds and highlights the dangers faced by turtles as a result of plastic pollution in our seas. The book is based on a true story about a turtle, Duffy, who was rescued, rehabilitated and released after eating plastic in the ocean. Working with Surfers Against Sewage, #2MinuteBeachClean, Marine Conservation Society UK and Fathoms Free, each of whom support her book, authors Ellie and Liz aim to teach children about the increasing problems of plastic pollution through the use of an engaging narrative and wonderful illustrations. Cornwall leads the way in terms of beach and ocean care and this story is a wonderful example of the lessons that we could all learn from.
CORNISH TALES
Eric Quayle, illustrated by Michael Foreman Perfect for entertaining adults and children alike, this collection of stories wonderfully captures longlived, but often unheard of Cornish legends. Readers will find themselves transported to a Cornwall that’s far from the modern world, with a backdrop of beautifully illustrated scenery that rounds off the charm of these captivating tales.

hristmas is a time when we often over indulge. This little recipe, however, while absolutely delicious, is a healthy alternative to those traditional gingerbread biscuits, as Lizzie and her little helpers have reduced the amount of processed sugar. Even still, her kids absolutely love both making and eating them, and we know yours will too. Be sure to make plenty though, as you'll need some left over to leave out for Father Christmas!
