to Kids Love Cornwall Living...
Having two young children of my own, I’ve decided that Cornwall is really just one big giant playground! From rockpooling and sandcastle building to sealife spotting and cycle trails there is always something to keep the little ones entertained. Packing up a picnic and heading to the beach with buckets, spades and surfboards in hand is the perfect way to have a fun-fulled family day out that doesn’t cost the earth. Cornwall is also home to a variety of museums and subtropical gardens and has a wonderful heritage just waiting to be explored. So, if the sun’s not shining there are still plenty of fun days out to be had. All that adventuring is sure to work up an appetite and there’s no shortage of child friendly, relaxed places to eat across the county along with lots of tempting ice-cream parlours, bakeries, delis and plenty of local pasty makers for a lunch on the go. With so much to see and do, we have done the legwork for you and over the coming pages have collated some of our favourites for you to enjoy – in no particular order! We hope or handy guide gives you some inspiration for creating a great family day out, whatever the weather!

olidaying in the high season can get expensive, which is why an out-ofseason break can make your money go much further. With this in mind, Holiday Cornwall recommends the Maenporth Estate, just along the coast from Falmouth and offering plenty to see and do locally. On site, you’ll find two all-weather tennis courts, a children’s play area and the Leisure Centre, where you can enjoy an indoor heated pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. There’s also pool and table tennis, free of charge. Falmouth is a hub of activity and makes for some wonderful exploration during low season. La Mouette, which overlooks Carrick Waters, and Phenests, which is close to Swanpool beach, each offer fantastic accommodation for your out-of-season escape. Why not try a ghost walk at dusk, snooze on Gylly beach in the sun, or get out on the water and make the most of an array of watersports? Even on rainy days you can explore Pendennis Castle or the National Maritime Museum!
And then there’s Porthallow, a tucked-away hamlet on the east coast of the Lizard peninsula. Book a boat trip to snorkel with basking sharks, or dive over the Manacles Reef; this is ‘proper’ Cornwall – idyllic, peaceful, with windy, leafy lanes and patchwork fields fading into coastline, all of which can be enjoyed with the whole family from your base at the dog-friendly Rainbow Cottage. The Helford River is a small resort on the Helford river, perfect for families or retired couples. There’s an onsite heated outdoor pool, while the beach is only moments away. Be sure to visit the Ferryboat Inn for fresh seafood, and hop on the foot ferry across to Helford Village and wonder in Daphne Du Maurier’s footsteps along Frenchman’s Creek. Finally, the Holiday Cornwall team suggests trying Mawnan Smith for a taste of traditional Cornish life. Here, you’ll love their 18th Century thatched cottage accommodation located in the heart of the village, or choose Querle, a beautiful house with stunning views of the Helford River.

Escape to the north coast
Sands Resort Hotel enjoys a stunning location on the north coast between Newquay and Padstow, with plenty of reasons for families to pay a visit.
J
ust a short walk from the hotel you’ll find Porth beach, ideal for rock pooling, while Watergate Bay is just five minutes away by car. Wetsuits, bodyboards, windbreaks and buckets and spades can all be hired from the hotel free of charge! If you’re looking for a little more action, there’s plenty onsite to keep you entertained, from minigolf and Foot Golf, to indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a maze, tennis courts, croquet, football and basketball! For those feeling more energetic, the playgrounds and zip wire are perfect, and younger ones will love the bouncy castle and soft play area. One of the best parts of a holiday at Sands Resort is how little you need to bring with you. Indeed, you can enjoy a range of conveniences free of charge, including prams, kiddie carriers, body boards, wetsuits, bucket and spades, windbreaks, bottle sterilisers and warmers, as well as high-chairs, pool towels, hairdryers, cots and linen. There’s even free parking and WiFi too! While spending time with the whole family is, of course, the draw of a Cornish family holiday, parents deserve a little time to themselves, which is why Sands Resort offers kids’ clubs and a jam-packed entertainment schedule during the holidays, so that parents can leave the little ones in the hands of qualified child carers and activity leaders while they make the most of the more grown-up facilities,
including a spa and steam room. Choose the early family supper and later, you could be enjoying a couples-only dinner whilst taking advantage of a free babysitting service. Finally, after a fun-packed day by the coast, you and yours can unwind in a stylish two-room family suite with sea or garden views. These beautiful rooms are the perfect antidote to relax, rejuvenate and prepare to do it all over again the next day!

Walking in memory
Remember a loved one with Cornwall Hospice Care’s Woodland Memory Walk.
N
ew for 2018 is the Woodland Memory Walk for Cornwall Hospice Care, a special family event that allows the whole family to remember a loved one. The event is taking place at Trelissick Gardens in Feock on Saturday 15th September. The walk, which will start just before dusk, promises beautiful views of countryside, woodland and river. Walkers will have plenty of opportunities to remember their loved ones throughout the evening, walking along the softly lit woodland route and at the end of the evening, will be able to light their personallydecorated candle bags. Clare Bray, Cornwall Hospice Care in Memory Fundraiser, tells us: “We are looking forward to seeing families from all over Cornwall at this special event. It will be a wonderful occasion to celebrate the life of those you miss.” Registration for the Woodland Memory Walk 2018 is £20 for adults and £15 for children aged 5-15. Under 5s are free, and family groups of up to five can sign up for just £45, provided at least two of the group are children between 5 and 15 years old. Registration also includes your t-shirt, on
which you can write the name of the person you are remembering, as well as a candle bag for you to decorate. Find out more and sign up on the Cornwall Hospice Care website.

WAYS
to discover
Cornwall’s Cornwall
mining heritage
In the 19th century, Cornwall became home to the global industry of mining for minerals such as tin, copper and coal, with its rich stretches of coastline and pockets of ore lying beneath seabed. It’s fascinating to learn that some mines, such as those on the ‘Tin Coast’, stretched almost a mile out to sea, beneath the very bedrock of the Atlantic!
If your kids love nothing more than mounting up on two wheels, then taking on a stretch of the Engine House Trail is the perfect way to spend a day. Winding its way through 13 Cornish towns, from Hayle to Bissoe, there are hundreds of historic landmarks to see, from Gwennap Pit – a Cornish amphitheatre made famous by the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, to the Carn Brea Monument – built to commemorate local baron, Francis Basset, a member of one of the region’s most important mining families, famous for his good working conditions as well as for marching his mining workforce all the way to Plymouth, to bolster the defences against the French and Spanish invasion.
mine and 2 levant beam engine
This National Trust site offers visitors the chance to explore the various ruins of Levant mine. Follow in the footsteps of the miners who once worked there, hear the tales of the Edwardian miners and discover the site’s secrets. Learn how the history of this mining site took a tragic turn in 1919, as the man-engine failed after a link snapped, killing 31 men and heralding an end to the mining of the mine’s deepest levels.
Tim Green

And, by exploring the various visitor centres and abandoned engine house ruins, dotted all around the Cornish landscape, there’s plenty to be discovered.

Despite the name, Wheal Prosper was anything but prosperous. It is, however, a stunning place to visit. The iconic engine house on Rinsey head – with uninterrupted, panoramic views over the Atlantic – is a fantastic spot for a picnic, and the adventurous types can even climb inside the ruin. Further along the coast path you’ll find more dilapidated ruins, but be sure to stay safe and look at these from a short distance.

Geevor Tin Mine is the country’s largest preserved mining site, where visitors can go underground and experience a real, 18th century tin mine. The Hard Rock Museum tells the story of Cornish mining, while the many other buildings, with their magnificent mining machinery, provide a fascinating insight into the industry. The world, during the 19th century, relied on Cornwall for its mining technology exports and at Geevor, you’ll begin to understand why!
Dennis White
3 Geevor tin mine
If you’re near Helston or the Lizard, be sure to visit Poldark Mine – the only complete tin mine in Cornwall that’s open for underground guided tours. Mining here dates back to Bronze Age, so it’s definitely one for those budding ancient-history buffs!
It’s likely that your kids will want to give surfing a go, particularly when the sun’s out, so why not head down to St Agnes, one of the north coast’s most popular surf spots, before exploring the local coast path and seeing what heritage it has to offer? Wheal Coates is arguably one of the most iconic engine houses in Cornwall and, upon visiting the spot and seeing it for yourselves, it’s easy to see why. Get there just before the sun goes down and experience one of the finest sunsets you’re ever likely to see! KIDS LOVE 2018/19 | 29

Guide to
G N I B B A R C isit ornwall Matt essop
Who can catch the biggest crab? There’s only one way to find out! So, why not give it a go by following our essential tips...
NORTH COAST Try Port Isaac and Padstow. The harbours here provide plenty of crabbing opportunities. SOUTH COAST Fowey is the perfect place to spend an hour or two catching crabs on the riverside, as the boats come and go up the river.
isit ornwall Matt essop
WEST COAST Cadgwith, on The Lizard, is a traditional fishing village, where edible crab, lobster and monkfish are still landed. Porthleven is a great spot too – the extensive harbour walls are usually home to legions of eager crabbers.
How to do it •
Find a suitable spot on the harbour wall (be careful now, harbour walls can be dangerous, so take care).
•
Tie your bacon onto your line (crabs love the rind best), tinned sardines or any old fish head you happen to have lying about.
•
Drop your line in the water and wait. The shore crab, the most common in Cornwall, needs a little coaxing – about five minutes should do it.
•
Raise your line, it should feel a little heavier, and observe. Clustered to your now half eaten bait should be a few happy crabs munching away, or you might need to wait a little longer.
•
If you want to keep your crabs in a bucket for a while to look at, only put a few in at a time. They don’t like crowds, and make sure you place your bucket in the shade – crabs are not used to the sun.
•
After you’ve observed their quirky antics, carefully place them back into the water. They are not edible so please don’t try them on the barbeque, simply let them go back home!
Did yo u know? The shore crab, which loves bacon, is an opportunistic scavenger that can grow up to:
3 incHes!

1 Sandcastle building
PRAA SANDS Ideally situated between Helston and Penzance, Praa Sands is a superb spot to perfect your sandcastle skills. With the beach stretching out to nearly a mile in length, there is enough sand for even the most ambitious children. Flat seas during the summer months also make Praa Sands optimal for paddlers or burgeoning surfers, and with a restaurant, shop and café all located beach side, all you need to do is turn up, lie down and relax.
2 South Coast Sun
PORTHCURNO For those families who fancy a picturesque beach, emerald green seas and nearby entertainment, Porthcurno is surely the number one choice. Located three miles from Land’s End, Porthcurno is fantastic for families as its narrow beach head ensures you can always keep an eye on the kids whilst enjoying the sun yourself. The Minack Theatre is also carved into the nearby cliffs – so why not make a day of it?
3 Rockpooling
MAWGAN PORTH Moving north, four miles outside of Newquay you will find Mawgan Porth beach. If your family wants to escape
inevitable summer crowds, then Mawgan Porth may be the beach for you. An abundance of rockpools and even a large stream running down the south side of the beach provide hours of entertainment for the little ones and if you think your dog would like the sound of this, as an added bonus Mawgan Porth is dog friendly all year round! For more rockpooling ideas, turn to page 39.
4 Easy Access
PORTHMINSTER If a scenic coastal train ride which stops just outside a beach sounds right up your street, Porthminster is perfect for your family. Hop off the train at St Ives and enjoy a short stroll to this family favourite. Porthminster truly has something for everyone; whether you’re a swimmer or a shopper, this Blue Flag beach has all the ingredients for a great family day out!
5 Endless sands
PERRANPORTH With its golden stretches of sand, award-winning waters and plenty of family facilities, both onsite and nearby, Perranporth is the archetypal Cornish beach. Located close to many popular holidays parks on the north, you can really lose yourself on this stunning slice of Cornwall. KIDS LOVE 2018/19 | 39

Come and play... Teddy bear’s picnic
At Bodmin & Wenford Railway If you’re looking for a day out for the whole family, where you can include the grandparents, bring the dog and have fun whatever the weather, pop along to Bodmin & Wenford Railway where you’ll journey back in time. Here are just a few ways to make the most of your visit. Appreciate the steam engines Some of the locomotives here are over a century old and you’ll learn that the driver and fireman have to work hard just to make sure their engine can pull the train up the steep Bodmin line! Go and see the engine up close when you pull into each station and ask the crew to have a look up on the footplate.
Crayons and creativity Pick up your free activity colouring sheet and pencils from the shop before embarking on your journey. It’ll keep the little ones entertained as you follow the route and complete the puzzles, ticking off the ‘Eye Spy’ checklist.
History and play Learn about the railway’s history and operations with displays in the Exhibition Coach and Platform Store. You’ll find a dressing up box – perfect for a photo opportunity – and kids can even build their own railway with the Big Jigs Railway toy box!

Guide to
Rockpooling Cover your feet, grab a net, and venture into the shallows when the tide has retreated. At first the pools might look empty, but keep still and beneath the water the marine life will soon spring into action. Here are a few watery stars to look out for...
TOMPOT BLENNY – Distinctive red eyes and red tentacles protrude from its head like a stylish hat. VELVET SWIMMING CRAB – Bright red eyes, bright blue banding on its legs and covered in dark hairs, this aggressive little creature packs a mean punch with its strong pincers. PIPEFISH – As its name suggests, this fish is long and thin and, like seahorses, the male pipefish carries the young in his brooding pouch. COMMON PRAWN – These are transparent so you can see all their internal organs as they dart around the water in frantic, jerky spasms. SNAKE-LOCKS ANEMONE – Bright green with purple tips, this elegant creature has a sting in its tail; its tentacles are used to stun passing fish.

THE DETECTIVE DOG
Julia Donaldson & Sara Ogilvie Peter’s dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. She is known far and wide for her talents, whether it’s finding a lost shoe or discovering which dog made a mess on the new gravel path, her gifted nose is always hard at work. One day, when Nell goes with Peter to school, they discover that all of the books are missing! It’s up to Nell and her nifty nose to sniff out the culprit!
THE FERRY BIRDS
Helen Dunmore & Rebecca Cobb This beautifully illustrated story from awardwinning author, Helen Dunmore, follows Jago, a small boy on a remote island missing his dad as he works away in Canada. When visiting his gran, Jago notices two turnstones who fly back and forth everyday leading to a magical dream where the birds fly him north to see his dad.
PIXIE AND PENROSE IN THE RED FLAG IS FLYING
Jools Hichens & Graham Hichens
The second book in the Cornish Pasty Peeps series, Pixie and Penrose welcome their Scottish friend Hamish and learn about being safe next to the sea. The book focuses on the warning flags seen at beaches and when is best to swim.
MY FRIEND WHALE
By Simon James THE BIG BIG SEA
Martin Waddell & Jennifer Eachus
Winner of the 2004 Hans Christian Anderson Medal, this beautifully silverwashed illustrated book portrays a bond between a child and her mother that makes the dark sea safe and calm, as they take an enchanting walk on a moonlit beach. They splash in the sea and sit on the shore and admire the distant lights of a far-off town as they “Remember this time. It’s the way life should be.”
This bittersweet tale makes us think about our place in the world and how we are caring for the planet and the creatures on it. Imagine how wonderful it would be if we had a blue whale as a friend, and then how sad it would be if that friend disappeared one night and never returned.

Following a former railway line, there are no major inclines, perfect for those who have recently become masters of two wheels or for grown-ups carrying precious loads.
This new 12km cycle trail which explores the slopes of the Cardinham valley is just as the name suggests; it calls for more than a little skill and courage. Setting the benchmark for single-track trails in Cornwall, the Bodmin Beast has keen mountain bikers and experienced off-roaders in its sights.

They capture the imagination and tug at the heartstrings – but perhaps mostly excitingly, Cornwall’s many and varied legends cast a whole new light on well-loved locations. King Arthur
NORTH CORNWALL
As the legendary birthplace of King Arthur, Tintagel Castle is the first port of call on the Arthurian trail, but the trail has many twists and turns, and takes followers on a journey through St Nectan’s Glen, Slaughterbridge and onwards to Bodmin Moor. Here the wild and rugged landscape is strewn with tales of Arthur’s adventures and at the mythical Dozmary Pool and the Lady of the Lake.
Giant Cormoran ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT
Whether by boat or by foot, the journey in itself to St Michael’s Mount is a mini adventure and waiting for you is a world of fanciful tales bursting with courage and heroics. Upon reaching the Mount you will discover an incredible land once trodden by giants, and one giant in particular named Cormoran. With a growling stomach he would wade ashore and feast upon cows and sheep that he stole from the villagers.
The Mermaid of Zennor ZENNOR
The most romantic of Cornish legends. The beautiful mermaid captures the heart of a local chorister. With love as his guide he turns to a life beneath the shore and leaving Zennor. As a lasting memento they carve a Mermaid Chair from wood which can still be seen in St Senara’s Church today. Listen carefully when you next visit Zennor – it is said that you hear the sound of the lovers singing together.
Giant Wrath
PORTREATH
In Portreath you can see the remains of boulders. These are said to have been the weapon of choice for a fearsome giant named ‘Ralph the Wrath’. Ralph the Wrath lived in a collapsed sea cave and had an appetite for sailors. He longed for their treasure and would attack passing ships and fill his cave with the loot. You can visit this cave, which is known locally as Ralph’s Cupboard.
Giant Bolster ST AGNES
The giant, Bolster, lorded over St Agnes, but love was eventually his downfall. In a bid to win over St Agnes, a beautiful local girl, he fell prey to her cunning when he tried to prove his love for her by filling a hole at Chapel Porth with his blood. Unbeknown to Bolster, the hole was bottomless and he bled to death. As a sign of this lovelorn tale, a hint of red still lingers on the cliff there.
