Well, the summer holidays have flown by in a flash and the kids are back to school. But just because September is upon us doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy the great outdoors! So, we suggest a few ideas to get out and about across Cornwall. Head to Heartlands for a day out, sign up for volunteering to gain vouchers into popular attractions, enjoy a surf, or perhaps enrol the children at Bev-Lyn Dance School. September also brings the inevitable back-to-school checklists: smart haircuts, bright uniforms, re-stocked pencil cases, shiny new shoes... but one thing that’s essential yet sometimes overlooked is a regular sight test. As the Reid & Gordon Opticians team in Truro remind us, visual health plays a vital role in our all-round development. Once again, Lizzie of Little Kitchen Magicians provides another tasty recipe to make together with the children. This time of year, there’s a bountiful suppy of juicy blackberries to be found across Cornwall, so we have a go at Lizzie’s delicious blackberry and apple crumble. Bookworms returns, too, with a selection of reads from the bookshelf, including a classic from one of our favourites, Michael Morpurgo. Enjoy!

Volunteer across Cornwall and enjoy fun days out Would you like your family to be able to go out together more often? Do you or your children do great things for the community or want to get involved in some capacity? Well, keep reading! If someone in your family aged 11-19 wants to do volunteering, help others and earn credits, they can spend them on great family days out. The concept is simple: “for every hour you give to your community, you earn one Time Credit, which you can then bank and spend on an activity of your choice, or alternatively, gift to another person or donate to a community group or charity.” If, for example, they help at a sports club, you could all go to the Eden Project. Or maybe they walk dogs at an animal rescue? The whole family can be rewarded by going out for dinner, or booking surfing lessons for when the sun’s shining. So, if you’ve got super helpful and kind children, siblings, relatives or friends, why not ask them to sign up for Timebanking Your Way? There are lots of different rewards they can choose from and they’ll be helping lots of other people across Cornwall, as well as being able to get great experiences for you!

Celebrating 10 years of skullduggery at Bombadingas Bombadingas in Pool has long been keeping fitness fun for young adventurers, with its fantastic pirate-themed indoor soft play area for the under nines. They’ll have hours of fun on the slide, in the ball pit, and squeezing through the spider’s web, with plenty of opportunities for climbing, spinning, running, balancing and sliding around the course. Delve into the dressing up box to dress like a real pirate, and the little powdermonkeys can let off steam in the separate baby area with its own ball pool. Meanwhile the older kids will love laser tag in Skullduggery. Even more reason to visit, this September sees the launch of the Sunday carvery, from 11am to 8pm, from 18th. Tuck into the hearty bounty at only £8.25 for adults, £6 for children under 13 and £4.50 for threes and under (which includes entry into soft play). Pre-walkers go free, with high chairs available. Always make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Don’t let the summer fun end at Heartlands
Dancers create Olympic opening ceremony
The summer holidays are over and it may be time to go back to school, but there’s still plenty of autumn sun to enjoy and fun to be had at Heartlands.
Over 60 dancers from all over west Cornwall and one student from the Ascension Islands came together for an amazing week of dance and drama at the 12th Bev-Lyn Dance Summer School in Redruth.
Whether it’s a quick visit after school on a sunny afternoon or a whole days’ worth of fun at the weekend there’s always something new to explore on the 19-acre site, which includes the best free adventure playground in the south west, five beautiful gardens, three great lawns, an interactive educational exhibition and an action-packed schedule of autumn events including Nerf battles, theatre productions and much more.
This year’s summer school had a theme of ‘Rio’, culminating in the students’ own Olympic opening ceremony performance. Doing five workshops a day in jazz, flamenco, drama, choreography and gymnastics, it was an intense and exciting week. The starting point was a Latino theme, ranging from rainforest sustainability, to samba, synchronised swimming and Brazilian folk tales. “What I love about our Summer School is that students, having gained excellent results in their ballet, tap and modern exams, get to experience a whole different side of dance and theatre”, says Principal Melissa Glover. “Seeing them working together across the age ranges, letting their hair down, being creative and forging new friendships is so inspiring.” The dance school is now looking forward to launching its musical, Peter Pan, on 3rd September to be performed in May 2017.
For details of classes contact Melissa Glover on 07783 327410, email melissa@bevlyndance.co.uk or visit www.bevlyndance.co.uk
And after all that excitement if you’re looking for somewhere to have a quick coffee or something to eat, the award-winning Red River Café is open daily, serving delicious, freshly made, locally sourced food. On Friday and Saturday evenings it transforms into the Red River Grill where all kids eat half price before 6:45pm, so it’s the perfect family friendly restaurant for an evening out. Heartlands is open 363 days a year and is free to enter so you can always visit for as little or as long as you like!

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional, and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible. Healthy sight can contribute to a healthy start in life. A child’s visual system develops over the first few years of their life. Amblyopia (lazy eye) is best treated before the age of four but continued improvement can be made up to the age of seven; after this critical period, perfect vision cannot be achieved. Amblyopia and squints are evident by the age of four and may be detected by the parent, health visitor or a teacher, but if they are not picked up and if a child has an uncorrected refractive error it will impact on the child’s ability to perform well at school. It may also hinder the child in later life to enter certain professions where good eyesight is a prime requirement.
The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted (hypermetropic) which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if a refractive error is not properly corrected there is a risk of permanently poor vision. Children’s eyes, as well as their visual needs, differ from those of adults in a number of important ways. A child’s immature visual system is more prone to irreversible damage. It’s therefore important to have your child regularly assessed by a registered optical professional. The main childhood eye problems relate to improper development of the visual system. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (squint) and uncorrected refractive error (short sightedness [myopia], long sightedness and astigmatism) are the most common. They are also all related. If a child has a
squint, or if one eye has a significantly different refractive from the other, this will lead, if uncorrected, to a lazy eye. The less dominant eye is effectively ‘switched off’ and does not develop properly. The child accommodates to use the eye which is least long-sighted which leaves the other eye with reduced visual acuity. In the UK all children under-16 and those under-19 and in full-time education qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test. Remarkably only 22 per cent of under-16s have ever had a sight test. So why not book in a test with Reid and Gordon in Truro now?

SEAL SURFER
Michael Morpurgo
Michael Foreman
Set in the midst of World War One on the Isles of Scilly, off the Cornish coast, this book tells the story of Gracie and Daniel who befriend the Birdman – a man who lives alone on one of the islands. As their friendship grows, he warns them of a dreaded curse that looms over one of the nearby islands. As the children fight against time to stop the curse, they question whether it’s really real. A story of adventure and sometimes danger, this book will keep you gripped from beginning to end.
When a little boy witnesses the birth of a baby seal in the cliffs near his home, it sparks the beginnings of a wonderful friendship. One day the boy gets in trouble whilst out surfing amongst rough waves, but his friend is there to save him – making their bond unbreakable. Join the boy through this touching tale of friendship between a boy and a seal who both love the sea. The story takes its readers on journey of discovery, of friendship and the power of the sea, accompanied by wonderful illustrations.

Take an exciting tour through the history of Cornwall’s iconic Bodmin Jail.
or an exciting and educational day out this year, why not head to Bodmin and visit the historic county jail? No one wants to find themselves behind bars, but as the kids head back to school to learn about the Victorians and find themselves (as part of the National Curriculum) learning about crimes of the past and why people were and still are jailed, nowhere offers more of an educational experience than Bodmin Jail. Whether your children are budding designers, would-be planners or creatively minded, seeking a career in writing or filmmaking, Bodmin Jail promises to inspire, inform and enlighten them and contribute towards an even brighter future! What’s more, with the team now offering tours and talks that both align with and support OCR, EDEXCEL, AQA, INSPIRE and National
Curriculums, you know that the information your kids are getting is spot on! Not often will an educational trip grab the attention of your little ones; with captivating and new exhibits, including the UK’s only fully-functioning execution pit, it’s not just the kids that’ll find themselves absorbed by the fascinating history of this jail. Dating back to the 18th century, Bodmin’s lockup is well known for spooky ghost tours, gruesome exhibitions and enthralling educational activities. And you won’t go hungry either! Head to the canteen and you’ll find that the team don’t serve any ordinary prison food; having cooked for personalities including David Bowie, Nancy Sinatra, Prince Charles and Israel’s former Prime Minister, Head Chef Paul Scott’s menu promises something to tickle everyone’s taste buds, with delicious dishes including Cornish hake loin steak with Cornish asparagus and lemon cream sauce and creamed mash potato – not quite the gruel you were expecting!

his is a yummy family recipe, especially for those who love foraging for hedgerow blackberries. It’s a great way to use the bountiful supply of juicy berries that we have in Cornwall at this time of year. It’s also a lovely recipe to support and include local Cornish produce such as butter from Trewithen Dairy or apples from Trevaskis Farm – if you don’t have an apple tree!
