With autumn upon us, it’s nearly time to think about Christmas – and Cornwall Hospice Care’s Santa Series Fun Runs are fast approaching... But, until then, we still have Halloween and Fireworks Night to get excited about! There are lots of spooky happenings and ghoulish adventures occurring across Cornwall, from Heartlands to the Eden Project, as well as the haunted castles of Tintagel and Pendennis. There’s some magic happening in the kitchen too... Lizzie of Little Kitchen Magicians returns with a hearty pumpkin soup – so you don’t need to waste a bit when you carve a lantern this year! Bookworms is back with more bedtime reads, including a few recent bestsellers, Jill Murphy’s fantastic new picture book, and a fabulous mythical adventure from rising Cornish talent Judy Scrimshaw. Last but not least, we have a go at making a pirate’s hat – an example of the many fun children’s craft activities organised at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall in Falmouth, perfect on those very occasional rainy days we encounter here. Enjoy!

Autumn is a great time for buying a local veg box “It’s a well-known fact that locally-grown produce is the freshest and tastiest you can get and at this time of year the choice is so exciting”, explains Louise from Healthy Boxes. “Right now there are so many seasonal veg on the farm to choose from, like the colourful squashes and tender sweetcorn. The vibrant kales are at their best and root vegetables are all ready for harvest too.” What’s more, all this can be delivered for you to convenient hubs in the area, including schools, offices or a local café, for example (a full list is available online). If there’s not a hub near you, why not contact Louise to set up one yourself? Louise is offering you a free veg box if you do! Check out the full selection of produce, local meats and Cornish dairy products on the Healthy Boxes website now. And while you’re there, check out the popular Christmas range too.

Wheelie good fun at Rollers Roller Disco! It may be getting ever more autumnal outside, but fear not – it’s time for some wheelie good and well-earned fun! If you’re looking for the perfect place to get the kids and their friends or all the family together, then look no further than Rollers Roller Disco – and you better get your skates on! With an onsite café, daily food specials, a well-stocked bar and coffee served all day, there’s a little something for everyone. The kids can roll rings around each other while you kick back and watch from the balcony upstairs, but don’t feel like you can’t get involved, the rink is suitable for all ages. What’s more, Rollers Roller Disco throws birthday parties for children, families and adults, with party packages to suit everyone. As autumn makes an appearance and winter approaches, the indoor rink is great for keeping warm and dry at the same time as zooming, boogying and burning off energy!

An exciting new chapter for Granny Moff Books Granny Moff Books is a publisher of beautifully realised children’s books, written and illustrated by local talent, Judy Scrimshaw. Each of Judy’s stories is based in Cornwall and includes a few words or phrases in Cornish. The Ballad of Morgowr is the first of a series of adventures about our legendary sea monster, first sighted in 1876 in Falmouth Bay. ‘Morgowr’ is Cornish for ‘sea giant’. The ballad is a long poem, with storyboard illustrations throughout. Launching this October, The Little Red Egg introduces Morwenna Pendragon, the first Cornish dragon for many a century! This little dragon will also have her own series of adventures around and beyond Cornwall. Both books are in rhyme and aimed at lower-to-mid juniors, although they are fully illustrated so that young children can follow the story too. The three Morgowr the Sea Giant books have the three stories within the ballad written for younger children; they are also part-colouring books. Look out for author Judy at a range of fairs and workshops across Cornwall over the coming months, as well as the highly anticipated Morgowr and the Leatherback Turtle, due for release in time for Christmas!

What’s volunteering and should I give it a go? Volunteering – or giving up your free time to do things for other people or charities – is a fantastic and rewarding way to help make the world a better place. It’s something that children can get involved with too. There are many ways in which you can volunteer. You could walk a dog at the local animal sanctuary, or help raise money for something in your town. And with Timebanking Your Way, you can get rewards for helping others. Every hour’s volunteering earns credits, which you can spend with local businesses or give to other charities. So when Jackson helped out painting his local community centre, he spent his credits on a voucher for surfing lessons. Lydia, meanwhile, is saving her credits from fundraising for the RSPCA until she’s got enough to take her family on a day out. If you think you or your children would like to volunteer, get in touch with the team at Volunteer Cornwall now, to learn more about the process.

Call 07729 680758, email roset@ volunteercornwall.org.uk or visit www.volunteercornwall.org.uk and search ‘Your Way’ for more details

Explore the past at Poldark Mine If you’re stuck for ideas to keep the kids entertained this autumn, why not pay a visit to Poldark Mine? A great day out for all the family, Cornwall’s only complete underground tin mine, in Wendron just outside of Helston, really is something unique. An exceptionally wellpreserved piece of Cornish heritage, a visit to Poldark Mine is a chance to discover more about your history – fun and educational in equal measure. Explore the underground labyrinths and caverns, learn about tin production, marvel at the mighty, mid-19th century beam engine, explore the museum and open-air exhibits. As you may well have guessed, the mine was used for underground filming for the BBC’s recent Poldark adaptation.

Little Monsters’ Ball at the Eden Project Get your fancy dress on and join the Eden team for an evening of ghoulish fun, including a spine-tingling disco, fire acrobatics, tasty treats in the cafes, and an ice rink to chill you to the bone... The spooky party takes place on the evening of Saturday 29th October, with tickets at £7 per person (under 3s go free). There are plenty of horrors in store, including two spine-tingling discos: Rave-A-Roo in the Doom Tent and DJ Spookmonster Mash in the Olive Grooveyard. Marvel at the fire dancing and acrobatics, witness a creepy crawly bugfest with The Wild and Deadly Show in the Moonlight Yurt, and explore the trick or treat trail around the Biomes. But that’s not all, with other activities including face painting, ice-skating and getting up close with creatures of the night (additional charges apply for some activities). Look out also for the amazing pumpkin carving demonstrations at Eden over half term, and pick up the techniques so that you can create your very own spooky Halloween lanterns.

For more information visit www.edenproject.com

The mine is set in four acres of riverside woodland and gardens on the River Cober valley. What better place to enjoy a day out than in the great Cornish countryside? The daily on-site tours are considered to be “one of the two most atmospheric mine tours in Europe” in the words of the former chairman of English Heritage. Look out for upcoming events and exhibitions at this jewel in the crown of Corning mining.

On 29th October, it’s the Heartlands Haunted Halloween Ball, which includes a spooky disco, ghoulish snacks, eerie games, frightful entertainment and creepy crawly critters courtesy of Mark’s Ark Wildlife Encounters. Heartlands has one of the best displays in the south west and, along with the giant bonfire and other entertainment, it’s an evening not to be missed. Heartlands also has markets, theatre productions, an autumn trail, craft workshops and one of the best adventure playgrounds in the south west. WIPEOUT

I

What could be more fun than bouncing, sliding and leaping from a 60-metre floating bouncy castle, style circuit?

f you’re looking for some fun with the kids this half term then a visit to Kernow Adventure’s Park Wipeout circuit is a must. Free-fall slides, trampolines and narrow slippery platforms make up this fantastic, floating obstacle course, suitable for age six and above – one of the best ways to spend an hour messing about on the water. There’s room on the platform for up to 30 people and there’s always a minimum of one staff member on hand to every ten slip-sliding clients. At Kernow Adventure Park, there are no tides, no rip currents and certainly no jellyfish, just a 150 metre natural swimming pool of amazing

water quality, surrounded by 35 metres of granite cliffs, with a café that overlooks the lake for post-Wipeout hot chocolates. Booking is essential, which you can do very easily online. The park will be closing for Wipeout sessions at the end of October, with wakeboarding runing until the end of November. This is your last chance this year to book in for some amazing watery fun!

More riveting reads from the bookshelf Escape the autumn wind and curl up on the sofa with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book. MELTDOWN!

ZOG AND THE FLYING DOCTORS

Jill Murphy

Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

Meltdown! is the latest creation of the much-loved, awardwinning author and illustrator Jill Murphy, best known for her Worst Witch series and the wonderfully observed Large family. Echoing Mrs Large’s endless quest for peace from the little ones, this newest venture follows Ruby, an excitable young bunny, who goes grocery shopping with her mum, with typically hilarious/disastrous results. Murphy possesses that wonderful, rare gift – delighting children and parents in equal measure with her colourful, unvarnished accounts of everyday family life.

Continuing on the dragon theme, this recently published picture book by everyone’s favourite duo (The Gruffalo / Stick Man) is the long-awaited sequel to Zog,, the popular tale of an accident-prone dragon. Zog and his friends fly to the rescue of a distressed unicorn, a sneezy lion and, yes, a sunburnt mermaid! As we’ve all come to expect, Scheffler’s vivid illustrations are the perfect foil for Donaldson’s rhymes, helping to bring them to life in glorious colour.

THE BALLAD OF MORGOWR

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

Judy Scrimshaw

Morgowr is a mythical ‘sea giant’, a plesiosaur living in the waters around Cornwall, featured here in the first of many adventures. Another Cornwall-based author-illustrator, Judy lovingly brings Morgowr to life with beautiful illustrations and captivating rhymes melding history and fantasy in a fabulous read. Produced entirely – and yes, even printed – right here in Cornwall, Judy is helping to keep the dialect alive, by introducing Cornish words in each of her books. Look out for her equally enthralling Morwenna Pendragon adventures too.

Ransom Riggs

The older readers will lose themselves in the enchanting world of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Already fast turning into a modern children’s classic, and the first in a series, this delightfully odd story was recently turned into a film by the godfather of gothic, Tim Burton. While the home is actually set on a remote island off the coast of Wales, parts of the film were filmed right here in Cornwall, including at Caerhays Estate and Porthluney Cove.

Join Cornwall’s biggest charity Santa Series for Cornwall Hospice Care.

hristmas is as much about the buildup as the big day itself and with lots of excited energy to work off what better event to take part in than a festive Santa Run? In fact, you don’t have to run because there’s also surfing Santas, cycling Santas, walking Santas and even elves and reindeers. This year the Cornish charity that cares for patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families is holding events in Bodmin, Wadebridge, Padstow, Newquay, Truro, Falmouth, Helston and Marazion. Dr Debbie from the charity says it’s good to have fun. “Our aim is to help our patients feel better for as long as possible so they can

enjoy time with their family and friends”, says Debbie, “so this is a golden opportunity for you to have a jolly time in the run up to Christmas. The money you raise will be used to help pay for the medicines and support our patients need. So thank you for helping us at this special time of year.” All you need to do is sign up online and you’ll receive a festive Santa suit, or for Bodmin you can opt for a Rudolph outfit and for Padstow and Falmouth the elf costume may be more to your liking! Mums, dads, children, grannies and grandpas can all run, jog or walk the routes and your reward will be a Christmas medal and a delicious mince pie. There are even prizes for the best festively dressed dogs!
