Our cover story on page 10 is all about the exciting new Vikings exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. These warriors of the seas made a huge impact on life in the UK and beyond 1000 years ago and this exhibition, which launches in March with interactive elements, has plenty to engage and educate children (and grown ups!) of any age. If you’re a budding entrepreneur and need some inspiration for starting a small business, read the story of Little Nelly on page 18. This children’s clothes shop in Falmouth is going from strength to strength. Finally, we team up with children’s publisher Buster Books on pages 7 and 8 with join the dot and word search actvities. You can also win three of these fun books on page 4. We hope you enjoy this issue, and do get in touch with your feedback, thoughts and ideas for Easter.

Meet the seal pups at Gweek
Win activity books Buster Books is offering one lucky reader the chance to win fun activity books to keep children entertained on wet winter days. Turn to pages 7 and 8 to get a taste of some of these activities with word searches and join the dots. Buster Books offers a range of titles for children, all designed to develop their cognitive skills while they have fun! www.busterbooks.co.uk Enter via the Cornwall Living website: www.cornwall-living.co.uk
Explore the great outdoors
In January and February the seas are rough. It’s also the time of year when seals pups begin to grow up following mating season in September. The combination of baby seals and huge seas means that the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is very busy looking after between 40 and 60 washed up pups at this time of year. They have been separated from their mums and need plenty of care to get them back to full health so they can return to the wild where they should be. Half term is the perfect time to visit Gweek and see these beautiful creatures for yourself. It’s an experience children will remember forever. www.visitsealife.com/gweek

Art workshops this month
There’s nothing kids love better than getting creative in art workshops. In Feburary, there are plenty of opportunities for youngsters to develop their talent. The Royal Cornwall Museum is offering family fun printing workshops for children age 7 and under on 17th February morning and afternoon. On 19th February there’s a screenprinting workshop for children age 8 and over with printmaker and designer, Dena O’Brien, which includes all the materials and a T-shirt as part of the £12 fee. Booking is essential as places are limited. enquiries@royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk
Tate St Ives is family-focused this half term with its Art Base activities. This is a chance for kids to experiment with art activities, and the February focus is on photography. So if you have a budding photographer in your family, get involved. No booking is required, although it may get busy, and its free for under-18s. Then there’s Tate Super Sunday for families. (It’s free to family members, but adults must accompany a child to gain free admission.) Here you can investigate art, get creative, explore the galleries and have lots of fun being imaginative. www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-st-ives
Cornwall Air Ambulance unveiled its two new helicopters in mid January, and you also have the chance to see them up close this month too. On Saturday 21st February, the team at Air Ambulance Headquarters (between Newquay and St Mawgan) are opening their doors to enable you to go behind the scenes in the hangar, see the helicopters and meet the lifesaving crew. These helicopters offer state of the art technology. Not only are they huge (the Octopus team went along to check them out), they have no tail rotor; these choppers blow out hot air instead to keep stable. It’s well worth a visit and the crew can explain in detail to children how the operation runs. There will also be refreshments and activities on offer too. Doors open at 11am until 4pm. For more information, call 01637 889926.
Singalong and Let It Go! This is storytelling, live music and plenty of laughs in a show for everyone age 3 and upwards on 26th and 27th February. On 4th March, let it go with a Frozen singalong. HFC is offering an excited audience of young Elsa and Anna princesses the opportunity to see Frozen with lyrics on screen. (The lyrics are of course for the accompanying adults as the kids know every word from the popular Disney movie!) There’s a free fun pack so you will be able to get involved and sing with your children in a memorable event. This one is for ages 5 and upwards. www.hallforcornwall.co.uk

Hall for Cornwall is offering a range of activities to children over half term and beyond. First up is The Snail and the Whale, a performance from Tall Stories, the creative team behind The Gruffalo.

MEET THE
V I K I NG S Young explorers will love the new Viking Voyagers exhibition at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Here’s why.
Who doesn’t quake at the sight of a Viking warrior? With so much history currently being brought to life on our screens, a visit to this exciting new exhibition is right on target for young audiences keen to experience a little Viking history up close.
The British Museum, National Museum of Denmark and many more. The state of the art show has taken years to develop. But what did it mean to be a Viking? And how did they manage to conquer far and wide 1000 years ago?
Viking Voyagers opens on 20th March and features internationally significant artefacts, exploring what’s behind the popular myth of the bloodthirsty raiders. It brings together a host of examples from
The answer is maritime mastery. Ships and boats were vital to Viking expansion as these intrepid Nordic warriors explored and colonised. They were invaders and migrants, and seas and rivers were the highways
and byways to amassing huge wealth and power through raiding and trading. So the Vikings set sail down through the Atlantic’s icy waters to Newfoundland and Iceland and even down to the warm Mediterranean to Istanbul and as far East along the river Volga as Ukraine and Russia.

What to do
Get involved: Interactive displays invite you to experience Viking life. Climb aboard a full scale replica of a 14m coastal cargo Viking ship, from 11th century Denmark. Touch and feel: The iconic Viking small boat, a six metre Norwegian faering, built by boat builders from Falmouth Marine School, is the centrepiece of a ‘touch and feel’ boat-builder’s yard. Visitors can hold tools and materials used to design these clinkerbuilt ships with their shallow drafts.

Visions of horned helmets, unkempt beards and fearsome raiding fighters carried by longships that were dragon headed war beasts come to mind when thinking of Vikings. Surprisingly, they were a little more sophisticated in their tastes than you might think, even wearing jewellery and combing their hair. Many were entrepreneurs, using smaller boats and ships to do business and seek new opportunities far from their Scandinavian homelands. The history of Britain and Ireland was transformed by the impact of Viking

raiding and colonisation and we still use their words in our everyday language. What began as small encampments up river grew to be Viking towns such as Dublin, which for a time was the centre of the European slave trade. Cornwall was very much part of the Irish Sea world, and the exhibition will reveal tantalising evidence for Vikings in Cornwall. This show invites you to encounter these Norse voyagers and the people and things they met along the way, contrasting the mayhem of the raiders, pillagers and ransackers with the resourceful trader, boat builder, craftsman and family man, woman and child.

e c i o V e l Litt Children are at the centre of the work of the Family Courts: their needs come first in cases about divorce settlements and the effect on them must be considered within injunction applications. Cases about arrangements for children hinge on their welfare. But what voice do children have? They may certainly make their presence felt at home loud and clear, but what about within the Family Court? It is often very stressful for children when their parents disagree, so the courts try to protect them from disputes wherever possible. A judge can speak to children directly, but that is rare. Usually if the court wants to hear from the children it will ask a specialist CAFCASS case worker, who then reports back. Often CAFCASS will be asked to indicate what outcome they think is best for the children. Even meeting with CAFCASS can be stressful, so the court does not do this lightly.
} Jo Stone of Stephens Scown LLP
When deciding a case about children’s arrangements a judge must consider a child’s ‘wishes and feelings in light of his (or her) age and understanding’. (Some kids want to eat nothing but sweets, and never go to bed; that does not make it best for them!) The court must get a feel for how much weight to attach to what they say they want. A child’s voice is usually heard from around age 9 upwards, but there is no fixed point. The older a child, the more their views make a difference
Some top tips to help protect children are:
Jo Stone is both partner and head of family law at Stephens Scown LLP in Truro. The team was named Private Client and Family Law Team of the year at the British Legal Awards 2013. Jo is rated as a Leader in his field by independent legal guide, Chambers. To contact Jo, simply call or email. 018 72 265100
solicitors@stephens-scown.co.uk www.stephens-scown.co.uk
Don’t tell them one parent is taking the other to court. If they are aware, put it neutrally: “Mummy and Daddy are working out what we think is best for you, and the wise man (judge) is helping.” Don’t let them overhear adult conversations. Avoid letting them know what you would want them to say – it’s a pressure they really don’t need.

F O SHOP R E WOND We meet Katy Lazenby who founded Little Nelly, her under-5s emporium, with the support of Outset Cornwall.
How many times have you searched for the perfect present for a child and been disappointed? Beautiful handmade toys for the under-5s or stylish babygrows can be hard to find, an experience which inspired Katy Lazenby to start a business to plug the gap. Little Nelly is a stress-free shopping environment for parents with small children and buggies featuring a range of gifts. “We provide beautiful clothes, timeless toys and delightful gifts for babies and toddlers. I am a showcase for products from a range of companies who all share an emphasis on innovative and ethical design,” Katy tells us. Starting a business was a brave decision for the busy mum, so she searched for local support which Outset Cornwall was happy to provide based on Katy’s thorough research. “I was confident in my business idea and vision but had no idea how to make it a reality,” says Katy. “I noticed there was an information session that evening and my partner persuaded me to check if there were any places. I went along and realised there was great support out there.”
Katy says that the programme was informative in focusing her vision, enabling her to make it a reality. “I learnt practical accounting tips, which was helpful and I really enjoyed the weekly contact with like-minded people and the buzz of ideas.” “Without Outset I would have not been able to produce a worthy business plan, cash flow charts and forecasts that meant I was eligible for a start up loan,” adds Katy. “Every question I had was greeted with a really considered and helpful reply from my mentor Ian and I felt very prepared.” This support has given this entrepreneur mum the confidence to drive her business forward, and with 10 years experience before having her baby as a manager of a bookshop, she’s able to ensure her customer experience is seamless. “I’ve always loved retail and I would now like to expand into older children’s clothing and toys,” enthuses Katy. “I have already found a demand for these, and I am working on an online shop so I can sell nationally. I would like the shop to host some pop up events and am in talks with a Baby Photographer too!”
