I Love You Natty Nine-year-old big sister Mia Goleniowska, from Cornwall, has published a ground-breaking book to help other children who become siblings to a child with Down’s syndrome. Mia, who lives with her family near Truro, found it difficult to understand why her baby sister Natty had to spend time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Treliske Hospital, Truro, when she was born. Natty was born with Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down’s syndrome, which was accompanied by a heart condition. Her parents, Hayley and Bob, did not know that their new baby would have the condition before she was born, so the whole family went through a steep learning curve of what life would be like with a child with additional needs. Hayley writes award-winning and internationally renowned blog, Downs Side Up. When she discovered notes and poems around the house written by Mia to her little sister, she collected them, soon realising that they were the basis for a ground-breaking book. Mia’s drawings and family photographs complete this beautiful first introduction to Trisomy 21, which has been endorsed by eight leading UK charities.
This July head to the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro and you can take part in the Festival of British Archaeology free family event on July 19th ‘St Piran: Cornish Man of Tin’. They will be re-enactments and lots of craft activities throughout the day. Drop in, no booking required. Normal adult admission applies.
The book I Love You Natty is available from Amazon at £5.99 + P&P ISBN 978-0-9929251-0-9
There are also free weekly ‘Make and Take’ activity sessions for families during summer holidays (26 July – 30 August). Tues for under 5s and Thursdays for over 5s. Booking recommended on 01872 272205 enquiries@royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk. Normal adult admission applies. www.royalcornwallmuseum.org.uk

Can we come back tomorrow? Flambards hit the headlines earlier this year after being put up for sale … there followed a flurry of Facebook activity with people posting their childhood memories of the theme park in Helston. Now, under new management, what’s it like … we sent Hollie Nicholls and family to find out for us. ‘Ferdi is awesome’ – head to Flambards and the chances are you’ll be greeted
by Ferdi on arrival and given top tips for planning your day. All the children loved meeting him, having their picture taken and getting a sticker – keep your eyes peeled for him. All the staff are very friendly and work hard to make sure you have a good time, we really liked the super friendly birthday announcements over the loud speakers. The log flume ride is an all-time favourite and never fails to disappoint and there is a whole area dedicated to rides for smaller children who can run around and enjoy to their hearts content … just be sure to expect the kiddies to want to go on the rides again and again! A great thing about the park is the variety; from rides to bring out the thrill seeker in you to children’s face-painting and indoor play … plus the endlessly fascinating Victorian village – you’ll always spot something new.
The best thing since Speciality baker Baker Tom’s cafe at his Bakery in Pool, near Redruth, is the perfect place to pick up the freshest loaf, pastry or cake fresh out of the baker’s ovens. The cafe also offers great breakfasts and daily lunch specials. Located 5 minutes’ drive from Heartlands, and just off the A30, the cafe is also a great stop-off to pick up pasties and sandwiches for a day out. Open Monday to Saturday: 8am to 4pm. Baker Tom’s Bakery Cafe, Wilson Way, Pool, Nr Redruth, TR15 3RT. Changing table and highchairs available.
The numerous additional indoor play areas are great as they give the children time for free-flow play in a safe environment to break up the day. It also gives the grown-ups a chance to grab a well-earned drink and sit down. Flambards has a different feel about it and we really liked it. www.flambards.co.uk
Picnic and a play … don’t mind if we do Everyone loves a picnic and everyone loves a play … this summer grab your friends and family to combine the two as Miracle Theatre hit the road with a brand new show. The Tempest has been whipped up and given Miracle’s offbeat style with plenty of humour to boot. The show, recommended for those aged 8+ although all are welcome, is touring across the south west’s best outdoor venues. Grab a rug, blanket and picnic and snuggle down to enjoy one of the best outdoor experiences around.

Hendra Holiday Park’s Family Campout
The laid-back camping lifestyle has always been somewhat of an aspiration for me. While I like to think of myself as someone who can effortlessly carry off the tousled, just-out-of-bed look, with nature-loving children running around me, the reality has always tipped in favour of frizz and tantrums. But practise makes perfect so with the oh-so-trendy camping bug in my sights, and the loan of a tent large enough to sleep my sister’s family as well as my own, I signed up for the Family Campout at Hendra Holiday Park in Newquay. Billed as a weekend of camp fires, games and barbecues, this annual experience attracts families from around the South West, and as well as newbies like us, pulls in seasoned campers for a slice of staycation fun. Arriving late Friday afternoon we quickly slipped into holiday mode and with cousins Jago (5) and Amelie (3) bursting with excitement we soon forgot that we were merely an hour from our doorstep. First-time experiences were being ticked off in a frenzy by our young campers, from walking to the toilet block in their onesies to snuggling into their sleeping bags, it was one big adventure.
We woke on Saturday to blue skies and sun so made the most of what Newquay does best; family fun. The morning was spent at Dairyland Farm World which is always a favoured spot for Jago and Amelie who dashed from one play area to another, stopping in-between to say hello to the resident parrot and to feed the lambs. Pleas to try out the Oasis Fun Pools found us back at Hendra in the afternoon where the sunshine had turned the outdoor pool into a scene reminiscent of the Mediterranean (not bad when you haven’t even crossed the Tamar). Inside and the flumes, jets and bubbles busied us for the rest of the day before we joined fellow campers around the fire to toast marshmallows, burn sausages and to enjoy an evening of family entertainment.
of its energy is generated by its adjacent solar farm) and was treated to a highlights tour of the five-star facilities.
The popular Mark’s Ark Wildlife Encounters was on hand to offer up yet more firsts for our younger campers, with Jago and Amelie daring to stroke a snake and a hairy spider. Then came family games from the outback before our action packed day was round off perched on hay bales enjoying live music Aussie style. As we decamped the following morning there was time to jump on the Land Train which toddles around the Park and we learnt about Hendra’s impressive green credentials (80%
.........................
While I still can’t claim to be a back-tobasics kind of girl, I came away from the two night Family Campout feeling like I’d spent a week on holiday. Amelie and Jago meanwhile haven’t stopped asking when we can go back. Our mini doorstep adventure has moved me one step closer to becoming a happy camper but most importantly it has given Amelie and Jago a much loved taste of simple, outdoor living. COME & SEE THE GRUFFALO SHOW CLASSIC CHILDRENS’ STORY COMES TO THE STAGE
THERE’S NO END to the re-creation of scenes from Frozen at our house, my 4 year old belting out the songs with a preference for volume over quality whilst the other sits and creates stories and scenes with his lego … arts and culture as a pastime of choice comes naturally to children. Think stories, hearing them, watching them and making them, painting, creating sculptures, acting out scenes - this natural lean towards creativity is an important part of children’s development as they explore the world around them. Entertaining children with songs and stories is all part of introducing them to new ideas or explaining the world around them.
There is something very magical about taking children to arts events, whether it’s the cinema, a gallery, museum or the theatre. “To see my children engrossed in watching a live show is priceless, I’ve seen them completely absorbed for 2 hours which is a joy, and then, unexpectedly, weeks later they will mention the show again, or start acting out a scene … they have obviously taken it all in and the value lies well beyond the time in the theatre itself.” Mary Each year Hall For Cornwall offers a real wealth of live theatre shows and activities for children, ToddlerTango, for example is a weekly dance and movement session for children aged 2 to 4. This 45 minute class aims to harness children’s creativity and imagination
through wiggling and boogieing with professional dance company Cscape. This July the brilliant theatre company Tall Stories return with their wonderful production of The Gruffalo live on stage. This monster family show is a hit musical stage adaptation of the award winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Audiences will meet a wheeler-dealer Fox, an eccentric old Owl and a maracashaking, party mad Snake! Mouse can scare these hungry animals away with tall stories of the terrifying Gruffalo, but what happens when he comes face to face with the very creature he imagined...? Voted the nation’s number one bedtime story by BBC Radio 2 listeners, The Gruffalo has been performed to well over a million people worldwide and has even hit the small screens in a star-studded TV animation. The Gruffalo is the perfect family treat with plenty of songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3+ and their grown-ups. Watch a sneak preview online at www.gruffalolive.com The show lasts 55 minutes with no interval but you won’t be frowned upon if you need to take a toilet trip during the show and there’s no need to sit dead still – although the chances are they will – they won’t be able to stop themselves … and neither will you!

“My two children love everything about a trip to the theatre from the chance to dress up, to the ice-cream in the interval. They have been going since they were two or three and never fail to be captivated by the lights, the music and the feeling of being involved, be it at the panto, a childrens’ TV show or the ballet. Next up surely has to be one of the big musicals!” Sarah

Go to Jail! Don’t pass Go, don’t collect £200, yes Monopoly life is a tough lesson to learn, but what of real prison? Dig out your stripy pyjamas and head to Bodmin Jail to find out! Can you imagine it there? Being hung! Sounds horrible, though if you are a little curious, because why wouldn’t you be? You can see the only working execution pit in the UK, and yes it’s as horrible as it sounds,The ‘Long Drop’ as they called it. In olden days they used to show executions to the public and the crowd would delight in seeing a criminal hang; but the sad truth is that not all convicts were actually guilty! You see, people weren’t as nice then as they are now; in actual fact some were vile, and the criminal justice system in those days was even worse, with no fool-proof way to find out if people were guilty. Many innocent people were sentenced to terms in prison or even execution. The first prisoner to be privately executed was a woman called Selina Wadge, who is said to still haunt the landings of the prison, so watch out! Lucky that was all a very long time ago, and if
you visit now, all that hardship is just a distant memory. Bodmin Jail has two different kinds of accommodation you can explore and play inmate in. You’ll find a Civil Wing – for your average everyday criminal, who mostly spent their time being cold, hungry and alone. Then there’s the Naval Wing - for your military kind of criminal; here the prisoners would undergo a hard physical regime before being returned fit for active service. It’s a GREAT DAY OUT!
