With spring on the horizon, it’s time to get out on the water again! This month, we suggest a whole host of ideas for exploring the coast, and also for bringing a piece of the coast home with you. I was lucky to chat to double Olympic champion and all round national treasure, Helen Glover (page 10) about what makes her tick and happy memories of growing up in west Cornwall. Mandy meets Mark Sansom, who provides a revealing insight into a day in the life of Falmouth’s Harbour Master (page 32). We take a tour around some stunning waterside properties currently on the market with Savills Cornwall (page 15), as well as some beautiful places to stay in by the sea (pages 35 and 37). Dan shines a spotlight on the inspiring everyday heroes of the RNLI (page 44), who have just launched a new fundraising appeal for the Falmouth station in its 150th year. Mandy takes a look back at Porthleven’s recent Great Baulk Auction (page 28) to raise money for the Fishermen’s Mission. Our sail-in destination for this issue is Mylor (page 16), offering the perfect spot to stop for lunch at Castaways. And, finally, when not out exploring the coast, you’ll also find plenty of ideas for the home. Enjoy reading!

NEWS & VIEWS Tamsin Mulcahy scoops prestigious award for her tireless work at Cornish charity, Turn to Starboard Based in Falmouth and using RYA sailing courses to support Armed Forces personnel who’ve been affected by military operations, Turn To Starboard does wonders to help them gain perspective on past events and focus on a successful future. Tamsin Mulcahy, who has played a key role as Operations Manager in Turn to Starboard’s growth, was recently crowned one of the first ever winners of Cornwall 30 Under 30, a scheme aimed at highlighting the region’s brightest young talents. Tamsin says: “I feel humbled and honoured. It’s fantastic that young people who choose to stay in the region have been positively recognised for their
achievements.” Shaun Pascoe, Chief Executive of the charity, praises Tamsin’s calm authority and experience as a sailor (including two transatlantic voyages!), explaining: “Tamsin plays a key role in maintaining relationships with our major funders, enabling us to support those affected by military service on a positive path for their future.” Congratulations to Tamsin, from all of us here at On The Water. Keep up the good work! Turn To Starboard info@turntostarboard.co.uk www.turntostarboard.co.uk www.premiermarinas.com
Comprehensive refurbishment of facilities at Falmouth Marina begins The work, which began in earnest in February, is scheduled to be complete by the end of May, in time for this year’s boating season. The new facilities will be modelled on the five-star, luxury facilities provided by Premier throughout most of its group of marinas. In Falmouth, they will include 11 spacious, unisex cubicles complete with underfloor heating and eco-friendly showers. There will also be a large family room and a spacious cubicle that is fitted with disabled facilities.
Mark Evans, Falmouth Marina’s Manager, says: “We are really pleased with the work so far and we’re looking forward to bringing our berth holders the luxury standards experienced across the rest of the Premier group.” The work represents a significant investment into the refurbishment of the Marina. See page 42, which showcases UpperDeck Restaurant and Bar – a great example of the work so far. Falmouth Marina www.premiermarinas.com

It’s typical of the custom and unique sailing yachts that we’ve come to expect from Rustler. Based in Falmouth, the yacht presents an ideal opportunity for those wanting to explore the south coast. What’s more, Rustler will happily deliver and collect the vessel to many other UK locations, meaning you can explore a range of cruising areas around Britain for the maximum amount of time. Sailing icon Ben Ainslie prepares for America’s Cup The Pandora Inn on Restronguet Creek, a 13th century waterside pub, is not only home to great food. The eagle-eyed will notice the golden post box embedded into the thick walls celebrating the Olympic victories of Great Britain’s most decorated sailor, Ben Ainslie, who learnt to sail on the beautiful river inlets that surround the pub. Having achieved so much on the Olympic stage, Ben has turned his hand to that other great international competition, the America’s Cup, now heading up his own team Land Rover BAR (Ben Ainslie Racing). Ben recently caught up with Mark Chisnell to talk about the challenge ahead this summer. “We’re going to have ups and downs, for sure… We’re under no illusions of the challenge ahead. I think the big thing with this team is just how incredibly quickly it’s grown in the three years since we decided to try and build an organisation and a team based on the challenge of winning the America’s Cup.” Good luck to Ben and all the team this summer, although a final thought from Ben suggests they may not need it: “If you see an opportunity then just absolutely grasp it and run with it, because you don’t know if you’re going to get it again.” Land Rover BAR land-rover-bar.americascup.com
Award-winning Falmouth yacht designer Henry Ward launches visionary project: Time Presenting an insight into the future, this fascinating design for a 66-metre explorer yacht from Penryn-based designer Henry Ward, in collaboration with BMT Nigel Gee, takes a fresh look at the boundaries that can be challenged as our technology and expectations expand. The design includes a detachable lodge on the aft end for shallower areas of water, a pool with 190 square metres of decking – revealed as the lodge detaches – as well as an on-board, autonomous drone that can carry up to four for supply runs or further
exploration. We spoke to Henry, who told us: “My inspiration for the project was to design a yacht that stood out from other explorer concepts. “The floating lodge was a driving factor behind the design – I feel guests should be able to have some alone time while exploring the globe and be able to go that extra mile where the mothership cannot reach.” Henry Ward www.henryward-design.com
Lights, camera, ambulance On a mission to capture all 237 RNLI lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland using Victorian photography and an ambulance, Jack Lowe is headed to the Isles of Scilly, camera in hand. This project, which will be the first complete photographic record of every single lifeboat station and crew on the RNLI network, will reach its climax as Jack and Neena – Jack’s ambulance and mobile dark room – get hoisted by a crane aboard the Gry Maritha and sent on their way to St Mary’s Lifeboat Station. The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company responsible for Jack’s transport offered to lend a hand after seeing his images of Penlee, their local lifeboat station. Neena, a decommissioned NHS ambulance purchased on eBay, provides Jack with the dark room he needs to use
‘wet plate collodion’ – a Victorian photoprocessing method that allows him to record some absolutely stunning images on glass. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing the finished project! RNLI www.rnli.org/news

Helen Glover and Heather Stanning on a London 2012 victory parade
We catch up with the European, world and double Olympic rowing champion, Helen Glover, to discuss growing up around Penzance, her love of pasties, and what it takes to be number one.
A comprehensive list of the accolades bestowed upon Helen Glover would need an entire magazine devoted to it. So here are just a few highlights: the world number one ranking in her sport, multiple record breaker, two Olympic gold medals, three-time world champion, and MBE (for services to sport, personally awarded by the Queen in Windsor, no less).

The girl with the golden touch
“No matter what your goal is, surround yourself with good people and go for it!”
And, like the Queen, Helen has also featured on a postage stamp; she has even had a new hybrid of fuchsia named after her. It’s fair to say she has officially reached national treasure status. Of course, it’s oodles of talent, hard work and determination that have got her here, but to those who know her well, she’s simply the inspirational girl from Penzance who dared to dream big.
Hailing from a sporting family, Helen, along with her rowing partner Heather Stanning, broke an Olympic record when they won gold at their first Olympic games in London 2012 – the first gold for Team GB at the games. (If you’ve visited Penzance in recent years, you may have noticed a gold post box outside the Dock Inn on Quay Street commemorating the occasion.) Since that historic day,

the duo remain unbeaten, going on to break countless records and rack up more silverware, culminating in another Olympic gold at Rio 2016 last summer. The pair have well and truly put British women’s rowing on the map, inspiring the next generation of aspiring athletes. Recently married to TV voyager Steve Bracknell – in a fairy tale wedding at the appropriately named Pisky Cove, near Marazion – we catch up with Helen, as she enjoys some well-deserved time off, to discuss an enchanting childhood exploring west Cornwall, her achievements to date and future plans. Helen recalls growing up in and around Penzance. “I loved it,” she says. “My dad has an ice cream shop, Jelberts in Newlyn, and our childhood was spent eating ice cream, pasties, seafood and clotted cream (not all together!) and just exploring the beaches and countryside. We would take long family clifftop walks, no matter what the weather!” Fondest memories? “Probably days at Gwithian sand dunes. I have so many places I want to see and challenges I want to do, and I feel I can use my physical training to go on some great adventures one day!” Helen offers her tips to those with dreams to follow. “I think that no matter what your goal is, surround yourself with good people and go for it! Support network is crucial, from the obvious people we see every day, be it coaches or colleagues, to friends and spouses and siblings. An unconditional and patient support network is crucial for achieving a goal.” But life is not all training and competing, with no time for fun, as Helen explains. “I love the outdoors so whenever I can I will kayak, climb or paddle board. When in full time training and too tired, this often leads to my husband Steve just paddling me around in our canoe!” And having decided to take a year out from formal training, this year will see more time devoted to more leisurely – yet no less active – pursuits. “I spent new year in Australia with my husband as he was working there for a month. This got 2017 off to a great start with diving, cycling, trekking and canoeing! Hopefully there’ll be more of the same for the rest of the year, plus running the marathon and finding more adventures!” One thing is certain, whatever Helen turns her hand to next, you can be sure that she’ll be making waves. WATERSIDE PROPERTY
LIFE BY THE WATER Savills Cornwall has a wealth of experience in handling the marketing and sale of waterside properties, and the team are delighted to present three houses that are currently on the market and offer ideal homes by the water. In a county with almost 700km of coastline, it is unsurprising that many people living in Cornwall will spend much of their free time on the water around our varied and spectacular shores. In all of their forms, boats have been a part of the Cornish lifestyle for as long as the county has been inhabited. These days however, there are fewer mining barges and pirate ships, and more fishing boats, motorboats and yachts. The south coast of the county is particularly associated with sailing; the creeks and inlets of the Helford and the rivers Fal, Fowey and Looe provide endless opportunities for exploration, with jaunts to further flung destinations often beginning at one of the harbours or marinas dotted along the coast. Occupying commanding positions overlooking the water, Chy-an-Mor, The Moorings and Quay Cottage are located in the sailing heartland of the Carrick Roads, between Falmouth and Truro.
CHY-AN-MOR Chy-an-Mor (The Shore House), guide price £2,750,000, is a four bedroom house in a world-class setting with direct water frontage, a swimming pool, jaw dropping views across the Carrick Roads and is surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens and a paddock. The house, located on Restronguet Weir, has a private slipway and a mooring (by licence), ownership to mean low water and is in a sheltered position, ideal as a base for nautical adventures. Chy-an-Mor represents a rare opportunity to acquire a unique, private home in the heart of south Cornwall. THE MOORINGS The Moorings is a beautiful Victorian terraced house occupying a waterfront location in the centre of St Mawes, with a guide price of £1,950,000. Boasting southerly views over the water, the property has been tastefully refurbished and is one of the few properties in St Mawes to enjoy private

access to the water, owning the foreshore in front of the house and a licenced mooring. The south-facing terraced garden descends to the foreshore and provides a suntrap that is perfect for entertaining or for simply sitting and watching the world go by. QUAY COTTAGE Situated in a conservation area and bordered by the National Trust woodland of Trelissick, Quay Cottage is wonderfully secluded and peaceful. The recently modernised and beautifully appointed waterside home has creek frontage extending to mean low water and its own timber jetty. With a guide price of £800,000, Quay Cottage is a natural choice for anyone searching for a Cornish bolthole in close proximity to the water and a short drive from Truro. Sail along a scenic river and visit the pretty waterside village of Mylor.
W H E R E TO G O WHERE TO MOOR? You can book your mooring by going onto the Mylor Harbour website and completing a form. They will then come back to you with all the information you’ll need. If you have a draft of over 2m take extra care when approaching Mylor at low water. WHERE TO EAT? Refuel at the same time as your yacht at one of Mylor’s fantastic eateries. Café Mylor is directly above the marina and boasts a delicious array of food and drink with a lovely view of the harbour. Or, perched above the Carrick Roads estuary is the secluded hideaway Castaways, a fantastic blend of Italian-style cuisine, quality seafood, a range of drinks and more stunning views. WHAT TO DO? Mylor Harbour is home to a collection of watersport activities, including windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, wake/skiing, and coasteering. You can also explore the beautiful river and all of the riverside villages, hidden creeks and waterside pubs it has to offer.
Positioned at the entrance of Mylor Creek, and just off the beautiful Carrick Roads, sits the peaceful village of Mylor, which offers a lovely spot to moor and enjoy a relaxing break. While the village itself is a charming place to potter about, the real pull of this essential Cornish destination is the surrounding natural beauty of the creek. Immerse yourself on the water with picture-perfect banks on both sides and the rolling countryside stretching behind. It’s a true illustration of the serenity and calm that Cornwall has to offer. And with the surrounding wildlife boasting a host of waterbirds, waders and the odd kingfisher,
these waters are perfect for nature lovers and ornithologists alike. You can continue to enjoy the idyllic scenery by pulling on your walking boots and heading along the Mylor Creek Walk, a relaxing stroll along the banks of the creek and the surrounding countryside that offers superb views of the Carrick Roads and the Roseland peninsula. The river, while beautiful, has a very interesting history due to its size, depth and position. If you were to sail along it in the previous century you would have been more likely to pass a battleship than a yacht, as the size and depth make the

BOATHOUSES
We speak to Carpenter Oak Cornwall about realising your dream space through the use of bespoke, oak timber framing. In 2014, the longstanding Devon-based timber framing company, Carpenter Oak, wanted to offer Cornwall the same quality of craftsmanship and personal service that it was internationally known for, but in a self-contained, locally-based set up. So it was that Carpenter Oak Cornwall was born. Based in Lelant, near St Ives, the Cornish arm of Carpenter Oak has been designing and raising timber framed structures all over the country, with jobs including Rick Stein’s The Cornish Arms and the recently completed gallery at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. With so many miles of coastline, Cornwall has proffered many projects on the water’s edge, from remodelling and extension work,
to new builds. However, as is the nature of the land on the fringes of our coasts, the footprint of waterside projects can often be limited and often, steep inclines and other surrounding buildings need to be taken into account before undertaking a job. With this in mind, if you, like many others, want to get more out your coastal home, you’ll be pleased to know that the Carpenter Oak team are extremely well versed when it comes to opening up a property’s space. On first meeting the team, it’s clear that this is a company that prides itself on using the right people – not only those who buy into the ethos of keeping things local, but those who have the necessary skills required to maintain a high level of craftsmanship,
where hand tools and more traditional methods are favoured over machine work. What’s more, having been involved in projects both traditional and more contemporary, the business has identified the need to offer a complete build package alongside its timber framing service so that, if needs be, the team can handle the entire process for you! Tom Jubb, Carpenter Oak Cornwall’s architectural services and design consultant, explains: “We’re here to help anyone considering putting a timber frame at the heart of their project. We’ll visit the site, discuss plans and offer a variety of options, from designing and raising a frame, to completely managing a new build solution. We pride ourselves on keeping the clients’

needs and aspirations at the forefront of every step, so you’re always in safe hands!” Project Manager and Carpenter Oak Director, Tim Simpson, along with carpenter Ben, hails from Cornwall. Through working with the firm, the pair have realised the advantages of being based in their home county. Indeed, Tim tells us: “By staying local, we’ve cut costs for our clients, made relationships with local businesses and gained the trust and support of the community that we live and work in.” He goes on: “Due to the nature of the work that we do, being local to a project has huge advantages. With each design being completely unique, the details need to be thought through very carefully and
such a complex process is only made more difficult when working far from base. Being able to regularly liaise and meet up without the hassle of being far away has become a massive asset to what we do!” So if your existing property needs remodelling, you’re looking for a plot to build on or are even seeking a complete rebuild, contact Carpenter Oak Cornwall to find out how a timber framed structure can make the most of your available space while taking in the best of the stunning surroundings. Cockwells’ 9.5m Limousine Tender
Those of you who keep up with On The Water may remember when we took a look at superior yacht builders, Cockwells and its team of master boat builders. Ranging from the classic to the modern, Cockwells is deservedly renowned in the industry for the supreme quality of build and individuality in every boat the team lays their hands on. Lovingly and individually made, no boat is the same, with expert craftsmanship and attention to detail oozing from every inch. What’s more, while heritage certainly feeds into what the team does, they’re adept at infusing modern technology and design into classic and traditional builds. Recently, the impressive company scooped an international industry award for ‘superior super yacht tender’, at the prestigious ShowBoats Design Awards 2017, for its Limousine. The 9.5 metre vessel, built to tender an 88-metre superyacht, is testament to Cockwells’ versatility in delivering exclusive custom builds without compromising an inch on quality or seaworthiness. With a top speed of over 30 knots, the Limousine boasts a sumptuous saloon of soft leather and a warm wood comfortably seating up to 12 guests.

The hardworking Cockwells team A well-deserved award for Dave
Cockwells Founder and Managing Director, Dave Cockwell says: “We are thrilled to have won this highly contested category of a truly global industry awards scheme, especially one that included such excellent tenders from Compass and Aston Martin. “This award is testament to our winning partnership with renowned naval architect, Andrew Wolstenholme, as well as the skill and ingenuity of our in-house team of designers, technicians and craftsmen. Their capacity to custombuild, in exquisite detail, to the precise requirements of our growing client base
is second to none and I’m proud to share this award with them.” Every aspect of the Cockwells building process, from the sawing of raw timber to the stunning finish of a boat’s interior is expertly undertaken. The team are incredibly passionate about what they do and boast an absolutely incredible portfolio. They love a challenge too and when we spoke with them back in our second issue, they informed us that taking on the jobs that other boat builders deem impossible is what they love doing the most! And, as new members join the Cockwells ranks in what is fast becoming a highly
modernised industry, the seasoned artisans work alongside them, teaching them the craft that makes the company stand out from the crowd, reinforcing its ethos of being a traditional boat builder in an increasingly modern world. From beds and sofas to the best shade for achieving that indoor, coastal feel, Julian Foye can help you and your tired home décor start afresh.
The team at Julian Foye always have ears to the ground when it comes to interior style. Indeed, when we recently caught up with them, they informed us that this year’s colour of the year, as announced by Pantone, is greenery, which we’re told is a refreshing and revitalising shade that symbolises new beginnings. According to Pantone, Greenery reflects the flourishing foliage and lushness of the outdoors. In particular, it works well in dining and sitting rooms. The first colour of the year to ever be selected by Pantone was cerulean blue. Even today, it’s a popular choice with the Julian
Foye team, who love nothing more than the coastal-inspired. In fact, in Cornwall, with its vast coastline and light-filled properties with white-washed interiors, the coastal look appeals to many. In particular, those who escape the city and spend their downtime relaxing on the coast tend to actively seek out properties in which the décor matches the sand and sea surrounding them. What coastal style does is bring the ambience of the Cornish outdoors in. Cerulean blue, which bridges the gap between azure and sky blue, has calming qualities that make it an ideal foundation on which to base a

room’s design. However, similarly to green, if certain shades of blue aren’t used with care, they can create a cold feel. While this isn’t a problem during the summer when the sun beams through the windows, with rental periods extending over the winter and spring months, a cosier décor is often called for. Cerulean blue, when used alongside grey upholstery, can result in a fresh, calming look that’s cosy and inviting, even on the dullest of days. So, if you’re a holidayhomeowner looking to get the most out of your investment, coastal style is certainly something to consider. Recently, the Julian Foye team has been busy visiting furniture shows and ordering the new ranges that’ll feature in the company’s showrooms this year. Modern and natural were two of the main themes during their search and lighter, grey-coloured woods are certain to make an appearance. You can also expect to see more furniture made from reclaimed wood, as well as surfaces that are inspired by nature and built from eco-friendly products. In fact, whatever style, purpose or material you have in mind, when you walk into one of the Julian Foye showrooms, you’re guaranteed to find something to suit your needs. For instance, perhaps you work from home and need a space in which to focus;
or you want to make room for the kids to do their homework. If so, incorporating a study area into your home can really pay dividends. It doesn’t have to be an entire room, indeed many who don’t have a room to spare simply choose to devote an area to the cause, with the simple use of a desk and storage unit. There’s a wide range of options to achieve just this in the Julian Foye showrooms, so why not get yourself there and check it out for yourself? Maybe you’re looking for a leather alternative that can stand up to the test of children and pets. If so, Aqua clean upholstery is the perfect solution, as it can be wiped clean with just water – you can even get biro pen stains off! The invisible coating on the fibres of the fabric simply won’t compromise the surface of the fabric, meaning it’ll still provide that cosy feel while giving you the peace of mind you need when investing in a beautiful new piece of furniture. One of the most – if not the most – important pieces of furniture you’ll ever invest in is your bed. This is where you find sanctuary after a busy day and, often, is one of the only places you can get some true peace and quiet. Julian Foye specialises in supplying pocket-sprung beds with natural fillings. So, visit the showroom and try beds that have been sourced from many options
to provide the best in comfort and value. With independently working springs, your new mattress will conform and adjust to your body contours, allowing you a restful sleep, every night. For in-depth advice on your interior scheme, just pop in for a free consultation with one of Julian Foye’s designers and create your fresh start. CAMPING ON THE Get the most out of camping near the coast with small space wood burners from Anevay. We all know a British summer almost always means some rainy days and if you’re camping in the great outdoors, the weather can be a real dampener. What’s more, after a day filled with hardcore watersports or exploring Cornwall’s waterways, it’s great to be able to settle down on the water’s edge and enjoy dinner at dusk, provided you have permission, of course! Fortunately, Anevay has the solution – the company’s amazing portable wood-burning tent stoves are the perfect solution for soggy feet and damp spirits! If you’ve found a suitable spot by the coast, bring the outdoors in with a small
space wood burner; whether you’re looking to kit out a garden yurt or a summer house, the Traveller and Fintan stoves from Anevay are the perfect way to stay warm on a summer camping trip or a chilly winter. These great little burners are designed for cooking as well as heating and are easily portable so can be used on your camping trip as well as keeping your summer house warm. You can even use this stove in your van to stay warm on chilly surfing trips. So for a great trip, whatever the weather, always make sure you have a roomy canvas tent with enough space for all your kit. Canvas tents help regulate
Coast temperature so you won’t wake up baking in your sleeping bag if it’s a sunny day. A tent stove is an essential item for any camping trip. You can use it to dry wet clothes after getting caught in a shower or splashing around in the shallows or to make hot chocolate and snuggle up in the evening with a good book. Even a sunny day in the UK can mean a chilly night! For a happy family all round, always bring some hot chocolate and marshmallows – a great way to round off a glorious day spent outdoors or on the water. Be sure to keep a deck of cards or a board game handy for entertaining on rubbish days to pass the time. It’s all about bringing the sense of adventure indoors, whether you’re cooking in a bell tent or your conservatory, so you don’t need to rely on the weather to have a great time indoors. Crowds gather to own a bit of Cornish history at Porthleven’s Great Baulk Auction.

Porthleven is world famous for its stunning fishing harbour, the clocktower, and the waves photographed soaring over the tower and the harbour during severe storms. The baulks are the huge blocks of wood (they weigh about two tonnes each) that are lifted by crane to block the gap into the inner harbour where the boats shelter. Watching them being lifted in or out of the gap is mesmerising, and listening to the hugely evocative noise of them bumping and rubbing up against each other during bad weather is a not to be forgotten moment on a dark night when the seas are rough. But after the storm on 5th February 2014, the harbour was badly damaged, windows smashed, buildings flooded, the old lifeboat

station (now an art gallery) lost its roof, and the strength of the water tossed big chunks of granite into the road and moved the huge canon. Worse still, two of the baulks protecting the inner harbour broke and others bounced out. Ten boats were lost and equipment damaged. Overnight fishermen lost their livelihood. The community rallied round clearing up and raising muchneeded funds. I spoke to Julian Waring from the Fishermen’s Mission. “The people of Porthleven have been amazing; Leigh, landlady of the Atlantic Inn, was the first to start fundraising events, raising thousands of pounds to help the fishermen. And if it hadn’t been for the quick action of the Harbour Master things could have been a lot worse. Caroline Quentin’s painting Another painting from Heather Howe
But we still needed to raise yet more money for the Fishermen’s Mission.” Then one morning on his way to work Julian came up with the idea of the auction; to use the baulks to raise money for fishermen in need. So he set about getting them cut into chunks for sculptors and furniture, and slices for artists of all kinds, local and internationally recognised. From Dame Judi Dench and Dame Carol Ann Duffy (the first woman Poet-Laureate) to Naomi Frears, David Hosking and Mark Surridge, all acclaimed artists, everyone approached has willingly agreed to feature or produce a piece of art. Julian took me for a look at some of the pieces to be auctioned and they really are beautiful.
On February 5th this year they marked the anniversary of the storm by projecting images of the art onto the wall of the Bickford Institute (the clocktower building). From 5th to 10th March the work was exhibited at the Lifeboat Station gallery as a preview before the auction itself, conducted by David Lay on March 18th in a marquee on the Harbourhead. All of us here at On the Water send our hearty congratulations to the auction’s organisers, those who bidded and everyone who turned out to support this fantastic cause. If you wish to lend your support to the Fishermen’s Mission, contact the charity now to see how you can help. porthlevenbaulkauction
SUPPORT The Fishermen’s Mission provides a lifeline of welfare and support for fishermen and their families. It includes emergency assistance, compassionate welfare, practical support and covers the whole of the UK coastline. They spend 88p in every £1 donated on providing services. DREAMS
Explore the reaches of Cornwall’s coastline in luxury with Cornish chauffeur firm, Duchy Cars.
Cornwall has a lot to offer those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Whether your interest is simply lying on the beach and soaking up the Cornish sun, getting out on the water to get your sailing fix or throwing yourself into the wealth of watersports that are available all over the coast, it’s sure to be well catered for. The kick-back lifestyle of seaside living, on its own, tends to bring visitors back time and time again! In fact, it’s quite possible that the only thing stopping you from visiting this gorgeous county and exploring the
reaches of our coasts is the drive. Not only can it take an age to wade your way through the busy motorways of high season; when you arrive, the roads can be frighteningly unfamiliar. Fortunately, the team at Duchy Cars understands all of this and appreciates the difference it makes – being able to get around in comfort. What’s more, with a transfer service that can get you to airports, marinas and stations all over the UK, you can take the stress out of the worst part of your trip with just one phone call! So, rather than drive all the way, only

to find yourself bogged down with the rest of the holiday traffic, why not hop on a quick flight to Newquay airport and let them do the rest? Specialising in business chauffeuring and long distance luxury travel, particularly for those wanting to make the most of a coastal retreat to Cornwall, this impressive, local business has been driving clients to and from their holiday air and seaports since 1995. Having previously employed cars from BMW, Lexus and Audi, when we spoke to owner, Steve, he delightedly announced
the most recent addition to the Duchy Cars fleet – a Tesla Model S, the futuristic looking, electric car from SpaceX entrepreneur, Elon Musk. Being the first business in Cornwall to register a Tesla as a private hire vehicle, this new addition is a massive step towards lowering Duchy Cars’ carbon footprint. Steve explained: “A few taxi companies in Cornwall already use pure electric or hybrid vehicles. The problem is, many require charging more than once a day and their range, even with a full battery, can be as little as 20 miles. This, of course, is
not what you want when you’re looking to explore Cornwall, from coast to coast, with only a limited amount of time at your disposal. The Tesla does away with such issues which is why, for many reasons, it is absolutely top of its class!” So, whether you’re a couple wanting to get around in luxury and style, or a group looking to get from A to B in as organised a fashion as possible, Duchy Cars will see to it that every mile is made as easy as can be and now, they can do it at as little cost to the environment as possible. What’s more, at the heart of the professional chauffeur service lies an ethos of discretion and courtesy, with plenty of combined experience working with a variety of clients, from senior managers and directors to VIPs and celebrities! So, if you want to avoid the stress of being behind the wheel in Cornwall but don’t want to compromise on comfort, style and punctuality, give the Duchy Cars team a call! TALES OF THE SEA Mandy meets Falmouth Harbour Master, Mark Sansom, to discover how he landed such an unusual job.
Mark Sansom, Harbour Master
Don’t be fooled by the slightly austere uniform: white shirt, black tie and epaulettes… the man wearing it is charming, warm and friendly with a wickedly dry sense of humour! Mark greets me with a big smile; it is to be the first of many. As befits the Harbour Master his office has a stunning view out over Falmouth harbour. We chat about how he ended up in the role… something that still seems to mystify him and, like many, he puts it mainly down to luck!
BACKGROUND Mark’s parents ran a hotel in Tintagel, where he got his lifelong love of Cornwall and surfing. But, at 16, it was off to sea as a deck cadet with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. “I remember I was paid the princely sum of £840 p.a. out of which I had to provide all my own uniforms. But it was considered a great privilege to be accepted!” He spent ten years as Deck Officer. “My favourite trip was
words by:
Mandy Milano when I worked on the support tanker for the Royal Yacht. The Queen was attending the Commonwealth Games so joined the Royal Yacht in Australia. We sailed back across the Pacific stopping at all these amazing islands… it was extraordinary… many were hardly visited at the time.” He pauses, “We played tennis and football against the islanders and I remember one match where the tennis court was invaded by hundreds of enthusiastic islanders: we had to stop playing!” He is full of stories: trips to the Falklands and others best told after supper with coffee and brandy; which get more colourful as he tells me of his time working for the Sultan of Oman’s Royal Yacht Squadron. At the time the Sultan of Oman was rapidly modernising the country, building roads, public hospitals and schools, but some villages were remote so ships and boats were the best way to visit. Before he left the UK for Oman, Mark had met his wife-to-be, Kim, who also went out to the Oman to work in a hospital.

Mark, on duty in Falmouth Harbour Mark, off duty with his daughters
Eventually the two decided it was time to leave for home, albeit a little reluctantly. Mark joined the Ministry of Defence as a salvage and mooring officer. He explains: “I didn’t know such a job existed, apparently it was a hangover from the Second World War. When I joined it mainly involved looking after heavy moorings for naval vessels and navigation buoys and occasionally searching for crashed aircraft. It was a really interesting job and I was given an unparalleled opportunity to make a wide range of operational decisions. It’s the same as being Harbourmaster; my role here is making decisions.” LIFE NOW Mark was working in Plymouth, close to the sea and his beloved Cornwall. But when the Ministry of Defence decided to send him to Bath he applied for and got the job of Deputy Harbour Master, later becoming Harbour Master. “It’s absolutely fascinating,”
he explains with enthusiasm, “such an unusual job!” He pulls an old yellowed booklet from a shelf: Falmouth Harbour Act 1870. “This is still relevant today. Harbour Authorities are governed by different laws and have certain duties and powers…” He grins, “But no; as Harbour Master I can’t marry people! Generally, whatever I think I’m going to be doing on a day often goes out of the window, as we have to respond to whatever happens out there...
“Everything from oil spills, to fires onboard; collisions, to visiting royalty or the arrival of the Tall Ships!” One such emergency was the arrival of Hurricane Floyd back in 1993 that destroyed all the pontoons and dragged all the moorings. “All I had was a sextant. I lined up the new pontoons on a particular house in Flushing. Some people did think I was barking!” Other highlights include Endeavour visiting in 1997, the Tall Ships in 1998 and the Queen visiting at the start of her Golden Jubilee; Mark was her tour guide for her trip across the harbour. You get the very strong feeling that he really loves his work and his life in Cornwall. “I’m delighted with the way opportunities have arisen… I’ve been lucky. Being Harbour Master is so totally absorbing and challenging I have no need to look elsewhere, and Cornwall is home!” Falmouth Harbour www.falmouthharbour.co.uk

Based in Hayle, Cornwall, although originally from Stoke-on-Trent, the Chown family have been involved in manufacture of china for over 50 years. We are one of the few producers in the UK who hand print silk screen fine bone china and have over 30 years experience in printing ceramics. We hand print, decorate and kiln fire to your specification so that you have unique tableware, this may be a particular design, crest or the name of your vessel. Once your design is set up it is then converted to film so that the image can be exposed onto a silk screen, a
screen is made for each colour, the colour then being printed through the relevant screen. Our screen printer, Stewart Chown, is an expert on ceramic colour and is one of very few ceramic screen printers in the UK. When your design has been printed it is coated with a transfer medium and left to dry before being applied to the china by our highly skilled lithographers. The tableware is then fired at a minimum of 850 degrees celsius which fuses the ceramic colour into the glaze of the bone china, this gives the vibrance and durability that fine bone china is known for.
Fine bone china is strong and long lasting and the quality will compliment your boat or home. A full design service can be provided if required, in addition to those boat owners who know exactly what they require.

SEASIDE SPLENDOUR We catch up with West Country cottage agency, Helpful Holidays, which has just added 18 new, by-the-sea properties to its portfolio.
With an impressive collection of around 700 West Country cottages already on its books, this family-run agency continues to go from strength to strength. In fact, Helpful Holidays recently cleaned up at the prestigious British Travel Awards, winning two customer service awards and ranking in the top three UK medium-sized cottage agencies! So, what sets Helpful Holidays apart from the crowd? With friendly support, flexible terms, local knowledge and experience at the core of what the team does, as well as a varied range of properties to suit all needs,
you can be sure to find what you’re looking for, whether it’s a cosy bolthole or a place to gather the whole gang. Take Bonny Alva (pictured above and below), for instance – a roomy new addition to the team’s portfolio, overlooking St Austell Bay. With fantastic watersports available in the bay, including banana rides and wakeboarding, as well as boasting four bedrooms and a tranquil veranda with 180-degree sea views, it’s sure not to disappoint. Then there’s Orchard Lodge, just 800 yards from Boscastle’s harbour.
With close proximity to the coast and five en suite bedrooms of beautifully finished accommodation, this property is an ideal base from which to lace up your boots and head out on the coast path. Perhaps being close to the famous surf break of Praa Sands is your idea of an escape. Just two miles from Praa Sands and within reasonable kayaking distance of Rinsey and the engine house remains that stand sentinel on the cliffs, The Hayloft puts you in prime position for some on-the-water exploring! Would a combination of quietude and access to seemingly untouched areas of the Cornish coast be more your cup of tea? If so, consider Treveth – a bright and airy retreat on the edge of St Agnes, also a popular surf spot. Within easy reach of the beach and the local pub, Treveth is perfect for a quiet escape from the stresses of everyday life. So, why not let this impressive holiday cottage agency live up to its name? If you have a property and would like a free appraisal of its letting potential, or if you’d simply like to find out more about the company’s huge, by-the-sea portfolio from the Helpful Holidays experts, be sure to get in touch. The beauty is in the simplicity Expert craftsmanship and exquisite attention to detail
THE GOOD LIFE Passion and tradition flow through every expert piece of craftsmanship in the Good Life Joinery workshop. Good Life Joinery, since moving to a new workshop last year, has gone from strength to strength. We caught up with the founder of this successful oak framing and joinery firm, Stuart Bowman-Harris, at his busy workshop just outside Camelford. There’s clearly a mix of modern and traditional styles being crafted with the items on the workshop bench. Currently being made was a sleek kitchen with stainless steel worktops, a very large oak staircase and a painted bookcase and
cupboard unit. Intrigued to know what inspires the team, we asked Stuart, who explained: “I believe the main ingredient in good design is simplicity. The first thing I ask before designing an item, whether it’s a large oak-framed garden room or a piece of furniture, is how the customer wants to use it. “I have a small, very experienced workforce and we all agree with the principle that form follows function. Also, we’re all absolutely passionate about what we’re doing – we
love wood and making things out of it. Whatever it is that a craftsperson makes, if they love what they’re doing and believe in it, their love and belief shines through the final product. A product made on a robotic production line just does not have the same feel.” Stuart also encourages potential customers to visit previous jobs, explaining that “quite often, the thing that sets us apart from our competitors is much more obvious when you can get up close. Not only do you see the level of detail and craftsmanship that’s gone into the piece, the client can also find out first hand how we will work with them; relationships with our clients are very important to us.” To see Stuart and his team, visit the Cornwall Home & Lifestyle Show at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge, on 29th and 30th April. Or, if you can’t wait to get in touch, give them a call or drop them an email to arrange a visit to the workshop. They’re always welcoming and keen to discuss new projects. SPOTLIGHT
LIFESAVERS Celebrating its 150th year, RNLI Falmouth launches a fundraising appeal to help make much needed improvements to the station.
words by:
Dan Warden
All too often, the RNLI flies under the public radar and yet it would, by no means, be an overstatement to call them heroes. One need only review the events that took place on the night of the 1981, Penlee Lifeboat Disaster, where 16 lives – including eight RNLI volunteers – were tragically lost. In fact, only a few summers ago, a couple of friends and I found ourselves at the mercy of the RNLI. Our engine had cut out, refusing to restart, and we were being swept ever closer to the rocks lurking beneath the surface near Nair’s Point but,
once we made the call, the lifeboat was out to us in a matter of minutes. It’s hard not to be impressed when you learn that one of the volunteers had been gardening at his home when he got the call! Unfortunately, being a voluntary organisation means that sufficient funding can be hard to come by and, with specialist kit and vessels to maintain, this can be a real issue. This is why Falmouth RNLI has launched an appeal to raise funds – £100,000 to help improve its station, ahead of the arrival of the new Atlantic class, inshore lifeboat in 2019.
“… as a team of fundraisers we are eager to get the appeal underway…”

raise the funds needed to ensure the station is fit for its lifesaving purpose, both now and for future generations.” Paul Wickes, Deputy Chair of FRAC, explains the common misconception that the RNLI is one of the wealthiest charities in the UK. Indeed, he informs us: “It costs the charity around £460,000 a day to maintain the resource infrastructure of safe lifeboats, communications and stations. “95% of RNLI people are volunteers, just like the fantastic team at Falmouth. The state-of-the-art Atlantic 85 lifeboat will make conditions safer for the crew, ensuring more lives are saved for local and visiting mariners.” The appeal, just like the Falmouth crew, is all about local people supporting the community and what could be more of an achievement than beating its target in this, the Falmouth station’s 150th year? For more information about donating or running your own event, get in touch with the FRAC team.

First established in 1867 in response to a number of shipwrecks in the Falmouth area, the original station consisted of a wooden building in Falmouth docks and the first lifeboat was a double-ended, 33ft, 10-oared, self-pulling and righting sailing boat, built from mahogany. The current site is situated around a quarter-mile from the first, between Falmouth Docks and Pendennis Marina and the new lifeboat, for which the improvements are required, will replace the current Atlantic 75 lifeboat, ‘Eve Pank’, as she reaches the end of her operational life. Mark Killingback, Chair of the Falmouth RNLI Appeal Committee (FRAC) tells us: “While the charity is currently investigating the different options of how the station can be adapted, no final decisions have been made. However, as a team of fundraisers we are eager to get the appeal underway and, with a packed calendar of events to celebrate our 150th year, it seems the perfect opportunity to launch the appeal and start to
