Summer is here and that means regatta season is now in full swing! Things kicked off with Savills Regatta and we were there to catch all the action as it unfolded. We also met up with Marcus and Freya Pomeroy-Rowden, who were in Falmouth for the annual Classics rally, for our cover story. This inspiring couple built their own replica 18th century lugger, Grayhound, and have set up their very own cargo route, transporting French wines and Cornish ales and cider under the power of sail. Returning to the regatta theme, we relive the recent Sea Salts and Sail Festival, then follow this with a round-up of the upcoming events across Cornwall, including Falmouth Week, Fowey Week, and the inaugural Islands’ Regatta on the Isles of Scilly. We also shine a spotlight on the fantastic work of the RNLI, the everyday heroes who work tirelessly to keep our coastline safe, and the sailing charity Turn to Starboard. Our sail-in destination for this issue is St Mawes, an idyllic sanctuary on the Roseland, where time truly stands still. We take a look around Falmouth Haven, the gateway to accessing our world-class sailing waters, stock up the galley with a delivery of fresh seasonal fruit and veg from Food Box Farm, and then moor up at Mylor Yacht Harbour to eat at Castaways.

There’s plenty to enjoy off the boat too, so we step ashore to review some stunning homes by the sea currently on the market, as well as waterside retreats to escape to with Helpful Holidays, and much more.

NEWS & VIEWS Innovation in outdoor cooking from Cornish company Anevay Nothing says summer like long days on the water, stopping where the fancy takes you to cook dinner and enjoy the evening sunshine. Redruth-based outdoor retailer Anevay has launched a new lightweight version of its Horizon Stove, essentially an eco-friendly barbeque that was designed to help reduce carbon emissions and protect the three billion people who still cook on open fires. Small enough to stow on your boat or in the car ready for a day of good weather, the Horizon runs on foraged fuel, so once you’ve picked a location you can send the kids off to gather kindling while you relax with a glass of wine. The Horizon was designed in the spirit of Anevay’s ‘leave no trace’ philosophy: it won’t
burn the ground and is smokeless once lit, making it perfect for campsites or even a spot of wild camping! Anevay 01872 870 839 www.anevay.co.uk
The view from Falmouth Haven: Safety tips for smooth sailing The warmer weather is now upon us, bringing with it the welcome flock of families to the marina over at Falmouth Haven, including many who are new to the water. With this in mind we have the following advice to ensure that everyone stays safe afloat. As the saying goes, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”. Be aware of tides, weather conditions and note emergency contact numbers. Lifejackets are a must along with first aid kits, checking your vessel is seaworthy and that your engine is running effectively. Familiarise yourself with any commercial shipping, local byelaws and speed limits. Lastly, inform
someone on shore of your plans for the day and take time to brief your crew. Should the worst happen, be acquainted with your man overboard drill, placing a ‘May Day’ call and firing a flare. If you witness someone in difficulty, exercise caution and call the emergency services. Equip yourself with the necessary knowledge, keep a clear head and stick within your capabilities – happy boating!
Creekside dining at Mylor Bridge’s The Lemon Arms The Lemon Arms is a popular, family friendly traditional pub in the creekside village of Mylor Bridge. In the fine weather we’ve been enjoying recently, it’s the perfect place to follow a morning sail in the world-class sailing waters of the Carrick Roads with a refreshing pint or glass of wine in the bar or beer garden. In fact, why not take root and stay for lunch too? Everything on the menu is locally sourced wherever possible, with tasty new seasonal dishes frequently arriving from the kitchen, courtesy of Head Chef Chris Oakes and the team. This month, they have gone shellfish mad, as Landlord Jonny Pearce explains. “Currently we’re flying through fresh local crab and lobster”, he says, “which we get straight from our Mylor lobsterman. Other popular dishes include the local scallops and wild, handpicked mussels – all the better with a bit of sunshine!” The Lemon Arms Lemon Hill, Mylor Bridge TR11 5NA 01326 373666

NEWS & VIEWS Discover Cornwall’s lakes

Veterans sail around the British Isles
We all know about Cornwall’s beautiful coastline, but perhaps less well known are the array of activities, watersports and wildlife to be enjoyed on our scenic lakes. With this in mind, Caffe Nova along with South West Lakes Trust have some great family ideas for those hot summer days at local parks and reservoirs near you. At College and Argal Water Park just outside Mabe Burnthouse near Falmouth, there are lovely facilities with ample parking, walks around two reservoirs, children’s play and picnic areas, and coarse fishing on Argal Lake. Caffe Nova is open
every day offering breakfast, light lunches, homemade cakes and great espresso. Stithians Lake is another great choice for camping, watersports and as a base for walking, with children’s play areas, fly-fishing and a warm welcome at Caffe Nova. At both locations Caffe Nova can cater for your private party or function, be it a barbeque, birthday or even a wedding! Look out for Family Fun Days coming soon and have fun on the lakes! The Round Britain Challenge 2016 sees a team of up to 38 veterans and crew sail 2000 miles around the British Isles on a 92-foot wooden gaff-rigged replica schooner. Despite a rather tricky start… the engine broke 6 miles out of Falmouth and they had to be towed back in by the RNLI… the ‘Spirit of Falmouth’ is now back on schedule and, as I write, is up in Stromness in the Orkneys so just over half way round They have travelled anti-clockwise around Britain stopping at major ports and places along the way. It took them six days of continuous sailing, four hours on and four hours off to make up the time they lost sitting in Falmouth waiting for engine parts. With a core crew of six including their own experienced Yacht Masters, ‘Spirit’ is then joined by crewmembers for shorter sections of the journey; all of whom have been affected by military operations at some point. The blog makes fascinating and humorous reading. See page 48 for learn more about the fabulous charity Turn to Starboard. Turn to Starboard www.turntostarboard.co.uk/ round-britain-challenge-2016/
Murray to represent GB SUP team The International Surfing Association, World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship (WSUPPC) takes place in Fiji, 12th to 20th November. It features four disciplines, with one country becoming Gold Medal National Team. This year a very proud Cornishman, Alex Murray, has been selected to represent Great Britain. A delighted Alex tells us: “I am extremely proud to be one of only two men to have been selected to represent
Great Britain in the surfing category. Living in Cornwall from an early age really developed my passion for watersports and the sea. My family and I live in St Kew and I work in Rock. I am currently training hard by surfing as much as I can at Polzeath and other beaches across orth Cornwall.” Good luck to Alex and all the team! Walking around Falmouth Haven on a bright summer’s morning it’s not difficult to find Grayhound. Even with sails furled, the 108ft three-masted 18th century replica lugger is truly one of a kind, rising tall above all else in the marina. And even in an historic port celebrated for its rich maritime heritage and Tall Ships Regatta, such a visitor is no everyday occurrence. This vessel is one that turns heads and the pontoon is a hive of activity. People come and go, some working or delivering supplies, others simply passers-by, who, like me, have been drawn in to admire the fascinating boat. Grayhound, owned by Marcus and Freya Pomeroy-Rowden, is in Falmouth to participate in the annual Classics rally – a brief stop over from the hectic schedule, having just completed a cargo run from Douarnenez, Brittany, trading Cornish ales and cider for French wine. She is shortly to head off again to Nantes on the Loire River. Seizing upon this short window in
Falmouth, I catch up with Marcus in the cockpit for a quick coffee. Marcus exudes warmth as he sits relaxed, effortlessly recounting the story so far. Marcus grew up on the river Dart with a passion for traditional boats; in his early 30s, he built Veracity, a replica 32ft Cornish fishing lugger. Later, whilst on his travels around the world, Marcus met his future wife Freya, a like-minded soul who shared his love of life under sail, and together they dreamed up a plan to make such a future a reality. Enlisting good friend and acclaimed traditional boatbuilder Chris Rees (who also built Spirit of Mystery for last issue’s cover star Pete Goss) they embarked on building their very own lugger. Marcus felled oak trees from his mum’s fields to construct the hull and, over a period of two years, the mighty ship gradually took shape. The result is Grayhound: a 5/6-scale replica of its 1776 namesake, built just a
few miles or so from the original shipyard in Cawsand Bay. Along with their young son, Malachi, Marcus and Freya now sail Grayhound around the world – Marcus as skipper, Freya as chef, also taking care of operational logistics. They are a rare anomaly: professional seafarers who actually get to enjoy life with the family. As many who choose a life at sea will testify, it’s not generally attuned to domestic life, often involving long stints away from loved ones, punctuated by brief breaks at home – the Marcus with his son Malachi

simple solution is make the boat your home and take it with you. They are joined by a small professional crew, and a rotation of adventurous individuals who sign up for day sails and ‘working holidays’, eager to experience life under sail on an 18th century cargo ship. So who wants to go on holiday to work? Well, as it turns out, quite a lot of people actually! “It has been received very well”, says Marcus. “It’s an activity, just like a skiing or cycling holiday, so there’s a physical element that attracts those who want to get stuck in and try something new. But, unlike skiing, there’s also a purpose other than purely the enjoyment itself – the teamwork and sense of camaraderie; achieving something under their own power.” You’re getting a one-of-a-kind experience. But, even more, people are buying into a story; a narrative
with its own unique allure – a window into another world. “Forget climbing Everest or a walkers’ retreat – the ocean is where you really find yourself.” On Grayhound, you’ll find no distinction between crew and guests – “There’s no ‘you and us’. Once aboard, we’re all crew.” This is not a cruise ship; you’ll be mucking in, living in close quarters with your new companions. You don’t need any prior sailing experience, so it’s not just for the salty seadogs out there. Everyone has value to add, each extra hand helping to lighten the load. You get the sense that this is where Marcus comes into the fore; in the teaching and bringing out of people’s individual skills. He is perfectly complemented by Freya, a very able seafarer in her own right, who keeps fellow travellers well fed with delicious food prepared in the galley, often fresh

fish caught off the stern. Malachi, who has grown up on board, excels at keeping everyone’s spirits up, cracking a smile and teaching you about the boat. They specialise in sustainable shipping. As founding members of the Sailing Cargo Alliance, Grayhound is one of a few boats today transporting cargo around the world under sail and the very first registered on their French trading route, carrying out eight to ten trips per year. Everything about the boat is carefully considered right down to the last detail. Take, for example, the traditional wooden
pegs or ‘treenails’, used in construction of the hull. But this is not just some quaint or slavish devotion to authenticity – it serves a genuine purpose. The treenails will last a good 100 years or more, compared to the iron equivalents, which might only last 15-20 at best. This is indicative of the entire ethos of the boat – it’s beautiful undoubtedly, but it’s functional too; it has to work practically, be sustainable, and operate with the smallest impact on the environment possible. These values hold true not just to Marcus and Freya and their boat; but to everyone they choose to work with, across the entire supply chain, from the construction to its everyday operation. They believe in fair transport and trade; challenging everyone from the wine producers through to the end user to
be more accountable for exactly what and how we consume, and the impact it has on the environment. They avoid using the engine wherever possible… and she can certainly sail! The cannons ominously poking out of the hull remind us that this vessel had a purpose. She was originally a privateer ship, built for speed to catch other ships. With the sheets up it’s quite a sight, the distinctive lugsails covering around 3500 square foot of canvas. A large barrel of whisky sits lashed to the bow, which Black Mountain is paying them to sail around the world. Apparently it adds a considerable value to the whisky to have been aged naturally in the barrel on an 18th century lugger. So will Marcus and Freya get to sample the fruits of their labour? Marcus grins, “I’m sure we’ll get the angel’s share!”
HAVE A GO! Visit www.grayhoundlugger sailing.co.uk for the boat’s full schedule and to book a place on the next available voyage. It’s one journey you won’t forget in a hurry!

not going to find the typical spares you need in the average chandlery. “We make everything!” beams Marcus. Grayhound can also add ‘filmstar’ to her CV, having already racked up some impressive movie credits. What’s even more remarkable is that the films have come to them – another quirk of owning such a unique period vessel. They filmed scenes for Mike Leigh’s ‘Mr Turner’ in Cawsand Bay. Ron Howard’s ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ was a healthy combination of right-placeright-time, and speculative opportunism on Marcus’s part. “Basically, we sailed into the filmset and got a part!” says Marcus, turning to Malachi with a smile: “We got to dress as pirates, didn’t we!” On an Atlantic crossing, and aware that filming was happening off the Canaries, they sailed closer to get a better look at the action. Whereas most boats would perhaps be told politely to buzz off, they were offered a week’s filming. The film is set in 1820, so being a 1776
replica vessel the timing was absolutely perfect for authenticity. After a quick tour, it’s time to let Marcus get back to work, leaving just a tiny bit jealous of this lifestyle they’ve created. It’s a phrase that gets bandied around all too often, but it seems they really are the physical embodiment of living the dream. Marcus, however, laughs at the lofty sentiments. “Not to be too poetic; it’s just about living life that supports the family and allows us to stay together, supporting ourselves in a way that’s friendly to our environment.” Although, of course, that’s easier said than done. Not everyone can actually do this kind of thing. It takes a unique set of skills, attributes and experiences to bring a project of such scale into fruition – thankfully one that Marcus and Freya clearly possess in spades. Grayhound’s very existence is helping to keep traditional skills alive, from the building to the sailing itself. “Sailing teaching today is so formatted to the point where people lose the ability to work outside of a prescribed system or procedure”, says Marcus, a keen advocate of practical application. This includes many other skills associated with the age of sail – whipping, splicing and so forth. Much of the kit aboard is bespoke. After all, when you own an 18th century privateer, you’re

SAVILLS REGATTA
FLYING A HULL
All the news and results from this year’s thrilling Savills Regatta on the Fal estuary.
In our last issue, we previewed Savills Regatta 2016 with Jonathan Cunliffe, Head of Savills Cornwall, eagerly anticipating the big day. We’re pleased to report that this year’s event on the Fal estuary proved to be yet another great success. Held on Monday 13th June at Mylor Yacht Club, it’s already gone down as the best yet. Teams came from as far as London and the Midlands for the event, which has now become a popular part of Cornwall’s watersports and social calendar. Co-sponsors Brewin Dolphin entertained the guests before the racing, with a guest talk given by legendary round-the-world adventurer (and last issue’s cover star) Pete Goss, while Camel Valley wine was served with delicious sushi supplied by Bango Kitchen of Falmouth. Thankfully, the morning rain cleared in time for the race start, with a good breeze in the 15-20 knot range. A record entry of 54 yachts came to the start line in classes for IRC, IRC Half Tonners, Handicap cruisers, Firebird multihulls, Falmouth Sunbeams and the traditional Falmouth

Working Boats. Pete Goss made a guest appearance racing on Soza and the fleet was greeted by a flypast by one of the Merlin squadron just before the start. The spectators watched the race from two enterprise boats chartered through Fal River, supplying warm Cornish pasties and cream teas. Brendon Fitzgerald from Fitz Marine Photography whizzed around on a RIB taking shots of the race as it took place. The Firebird multihull class scorched
round the course and Pete Stephens took the honours, with all six boats ‘flying a hull’ at some point in the race. Duncan Adams won the IRC division 1 in Vindscreen Viper for the second time, while the Laser 28 Encore was the clear winner in IRC 2, again for the second time. Five half tonners took the opportunity to get some practice in for the forthcoming Half Ton Cup, with Paul Pullen’s Miss Whiplash winning comfortably in the end.
SPONSORS Jonathan and the Savills team would like to thank their event partners, Stephens Scown and Brewin Dolphin, as well as all the sponsors and supporters: • Country Life magazine • Ancasta Yacht Brokers • St Austell Brewery • Stacks Property Search • Mylor Chandlery • Dead Man’s Fingers • Engine House Media Spectators viewed the action from the water courtesy of Fal River Ferries

E class was won by Paddy Fox’s Bristolbased team aboard Merlin, while John Cruise took the honours in U class. In the Sunbeam class, Neil Hopkins’ Mary was the sole survivor from four entries, and Arty Williams’ Winnie won the colourful Falmouth Working Boat class. Again this year, there were six Shrimpers racing, with Pelican taking the gun. Challenging conditions ensured it was an another exciting event. Back ashore Stephens Scown hosted a party for the skippers and crews after the packed prizegiving. With Tribute in barrels and Dead Man’s Fingers rum providing ‘Dark and Stormy’s and caterers from ‘Food Glorious Food’ handing out Caribbean style canapés, it was a sailor’s paradise!
The combined entry fees and raffle proceeds raised over £1500 for the Cornwall Community Foundation. Raffle prizes were kindly donated by The Cove, Camellia Interiors, Bango Kitchen, Paul Jackson, Cusgarne Organic Farm and Wine in Cornwall. “Thanks to our sponsors and the competitors”, says Jonathan Cunliffe, “the event has grown far beyond our wildest dreams when we started it in 2007. It is great that people keep coming back, but also that it is attracting new teams for the first time, and from other parts of the UK.” Jonathan continues: “As always, we must also give a special mention to our hosts Mylor Yacht Club who organised the racing and whose staff and race officials were fantastic.” The bar has been set extremely high for the next Savills Regatta in 2018, so we look forward to another fantastic event. Congratulations to all who took part! Savills Cornwall 01872 243200 truro@savills.com www.savills.co.uk

WATERSIDE RETREATS Escape it all with this selection of beautiful cottages by the water available to book through Helpful Holidays.
Castle View
Gazing out to sea puts hustle and bustle behind your back, out of sight and out of mind. You forget your worries, kick off your shoes and scrunch the sand under your toes – it’s joyous! British seaside holidays are enjoying a glorious revival. Just look at the 2016 Sea View print created by fashion designer Cath Kidston – it’s a nostalgic celebration of seagulls and sailing boats (with the odd jet ski dodging 1950s fustiness). Helpful Holidays, the award-winning West Country holiday cottage specialists, let a huge range of welcoming houses, cottages and apartments beside the sea and on riverbanks. Jackie Dawes of Helpful Holidays says, “Our waterside cottages are more popular than ever this year. Parents are recreating treasured
childhood holiday experiences with their own families: timeless memories of carefree sandcastling, rockpooling and splashing in the sun.” Helpful Holidays, who won the Feefo Gold Award for outstanding customer service last year, are seeking new waterside properties to add to the portfolio. The friendly team, with over 30 years’ experience, is pleased to hear from property owners interested in letting, and offer personal advice and support, effective marketing and great results. We’ve chosen some of our favourites currently let by Helpful Holidays, which are proving especially popular. Helpful Holidays 01647 434320 www.helpfulholidays.co.uk

AT THE HELM
In conversation with Anthony Scrivener of Ocean Falmouth about business, bikes and the new BMW 7 Series. Born in Lichfield, Anthony began his career as an apprentice technician, cutting his teeth at Volkswagen Audi before qualifying as a skilled technician for Jaguar Land Rover. Life hasn’t always been ‘BMW’ for Anthony and his formative years in the automotive industry gave him a wide grounding across a number of marques. As we chat it becomes apparent that Anthony is a very driven individual and it wasn’t long before he had his sights firmly set on a management position. “I was very lucky that my line manager at the time prepared me for a role in management. As soon as a position came up I was ready to make the move – I’m indebted to him,” explained Anthony, and it is clear that this early experience has shaped the way Anthony manages his
Ocean team today; always keen to give his own employees the same opportunities he was afforded. By the age of 27 Anthony had his first dealership in Merry Hill, Dudley – a 27 car showroom and 150 used cars kept him busy. A move to south Wales saw him running Bridgend Ford, at the time one of the largest volume businesses in the area. A chance conversation with an old colleague on the drive home one night was the catalyst for his move to Cornwall. “The owner of the Ocean BMW group rang and asked me if I fancied moving down to Cornwall to manage Ocean Falmouth. I had to ask him where it was to which he replied, ‘Look at the very bottom of the map of the UK and you’ll find it!’ My daughter Isabel was three at the time and it was a big decision, not for me to move to BMW, because I knew and loved the brand, but uprooting my daughter from where she was born was difficult,” explained Anthony. “In fairness I took her back to south Wales last year and she

LIGHTER. LEANER. STRONGER. Anthony’s car of choice is the new BMW 7 Series, this is the ultimate luxury car for the discerning driver. It goes without saying that having the best mode of transport makes the journey an experience rather than just a way of getting from A to B. Whether that be a custom-made yacht slicing through the waves or your car of choice, for the discerning buyer a mix of cutting-edge technology, high end design and gadgets galore make for the ultimate ride. BMW have always recognised the need for a balance between luxury and style and retailer Ocean BMW in Falmouth, sailing capital of the south west, certainly know class when they see it.

remembered nothing so I needn’t have worried!” Anthony has never looked back and loves his lifestyle in Cornwall. It’s been nine years since he made the move and living in Porthleven means he has the ultimate work-life balance. Anthony muses: “I adore Porthleven and now wouldn’t want to live anywhere else – it’s magic. Living in Cornwall offers a lifestyle for my daughter that I would have loved to have had when I was a boy. School didn’t interest me at all, the more sport I did the happier I was. Sport gave me the discipline, drive and determination to achieve and want more. I did finally do a degree in automotive retail management at Loughborough University but that was much later in life.” The love of sport has never left Anthony and now cycling is his passion. “I was 50 last year and sitting around the dinner table at Christmas I made the resolution to get fit and do a ride for charity.” After completing the London to Paris ride in aid of Cornwall Air Ambulance in 2015 there was no stopping
him. As we go to print Anthony will be taking part in the Children’s Hospice South West Ride For Precious Lives for the second year running, an annual 205-mile, three-day cycle challenge that takes in the south west’s three children’s hospices, Little Harbour near St Austell, Little Bridge House near Barnstaple and Charlton Farm near Bristol. As we sit in the new Ocean Falmouth showroom it is clear that Anthony not only loves his life in Cornwall but also his work. “I love it,” he confirms, “I love everything about it, but what’s not to love? I have the best retailing set up in Cornwall as far as our industry is concerned, I passionately believe I have the best product and my third shining light is the people that work with me as they are all driven, professional and fun to be around – when you’ve got all of those, life is rich.” Ocean Falmouth Falmouth Road, Penryn TR10 8AD 01326 375100 www.oceanfalmouthbmw.co.uk

REGATTA SEASON
Regatta
TIME Serious racing to parades of sail, regatta season is lots of fun on the water, in the water or just near it!
words by:
Mandy Milano
From salty seadogs to dedicated landlubbers we all love the sight of boats of all shapes and sizes in full sail. The wind carrying the sound of shouted orders in a strange language across the water: “tacking”, “ready to gybe” or a yelled “starboard” as two boats get a bit too close for comfort. Cornwall is almost surrounded by the sea and we take our competitive sailing and watersports seriously, even if just for a few hours, a day, or a weekend race from the Helford to L’Aberach. The coast is dotted with sailing clubs and harbours and most will have some kind of
summer regatta; some purely sailing but many including family-friendly events and evening entertainment. We’ve already kicked off the season with events like Savills Regatta (see page 20) and the impressive sight of the historic vessels that visit Mousehole for the Sea Salts and Sail Festival in early July; where scores of traditional wooden vessels, rigged with spars and tan sails, line the harbour wall. A truly impressive parade of sail to stir the heart of even the most hardened landlubber. We take a look at a few upcoming regattas taking place in the Duchy.

Falmouth Week Regatta Friday 5th to Sunday 14th August Always a highlight on the calendar, for sailors, locals and visitors. There’s a comprehensive sailing programme and each day is hosted by a different local yacht club with racing in Falmouth Bay and the Carrick Roads. There’s a huge range of boats included, from the classic Falmouth working boats, gaffers and Cornish shrimpers to modern multihulls, one designs and cruising yachts providing plenty of colour and excitement on the water. But if you’d rather enjoy the action on land then there is plenty going on in town and on Events Square with lots of music, food and craft stalls. The Red Arrows make an appearance mid-week and there is the spectacular firework display on Friday evening. Plenty to keep everyone happy and entertained. www.falmouthweek.co.uk
Henri Lloyd Half Ton Classics Cup Monday 15th to Friday 19th August This prestigious event is a real coup for Flushing Sailing Club (FSC); previously held in places like Cowes, and St Quay in France. FSC Event Manager, Dave Owens explains: “We are expecting up to 30 boats from across Ireland, Europe and England. The boats are 30 foot long, classic, racing machines, generally sailing with seven crew. The racing will be close and hard fought, providing some terrific spectator sport around Falmouth Bay.”
Don’t miss the annual carnival procession or the wonderful music every night, whatever the weather, on Town Quay. For the competitive there are sailing, raft, rowing, gig and swimming races. The Red Arrows make an appearance mid-week, and there are two fantastic firework displays and, of course, lots of sailing. www.foweyroyalregatta.co.uk
The Islands’ Regatta Friday 26th to Monday 29th August The Isles of Scilly is the place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend. The first Islands’ Regatta will see a flotilla of classic and traditional boats sail into St Mary’s harbour from Falmouth. Including the Spirit of Falmouth, a 92ft wooden schooner operated by the charity Turn to Starboard. With plenty of sailing, a non-stop shore-side programme, a display from the Red Arrows and a visit from a Royal Navy Type 23 frigate.

Secret SANCTUARY
The idea that every man should have his cave or shed has moved on, with the arrival of the Garden Hideaway.
It all started with Calum White’s desire to have the perfect creative studio space away from the hustle and bustle of home life, more than just a shed. As a result he designed and built his first Hideaway, unveiled to great acclaim. Since then he’s been working in a north Cornwall barn with fellow craftsmen Richard, Nathan and Steve to create Garden Hideaways – extraordinary individual buildings that every garden should have. These are not mass-produced garden sheds or summerhouses but bespoke buildings built to each customer’s specific needs and designs, whether it’s a home office, garden room, family annexe or hobby retreat. Focussing on longevity, sustainability, quality and usability, the Hideaways are built to the highest standards as mobile ‘tiny cottages’ that are fully functional and complete in every way. The team’s desire is to create a unique, special space away from the main house that’s comfortable, welcoming and useful throughout the year, yet beautiful and gentle on the eye to complement any garden... and it works! The signature featherboard walls under a shingle roof means that the Garden Hideaway merges into any garden and becomes a special part of it! Until you’ve been inside a Garden Hideaway it’s impossible to really
comprehend its unique quality of tranquillity and beauty. As Calum explains, “We love having visitors so we can hear their first reactions. Spontaneous exclamations of ‘Wow!’ or ‘Gosh!’ are the usual responses that show the visual impact our Hideaways create on first sight.” The real secret to the superb quality of a Garden Hideaway is drinking lots of tea. As Calum admits, “We’ll all drink tea together several times a day. This gives us opportunity to constantly reflect, discuss and perfect the crafting of your Hideaway to make it special for you.” These bespoke retreats can be mobile or sited in your garden to suit your purposes, but consideration needs to be given to some factors. Firstly, how you want to use it? Perhaps, it’ll be a sewing or reading room, or maybe an office. Mostly though it’s about multiple uses. Also consider the amount and direction of sunshine in your garden and how much sun or shade you want in your tiny cottage. What you want to look at, or keep hidden from, in your tranquil moments? Your tiny cottage can have windows and doors in any elevation. Finally, do you wish to grow plants up and around your cottage? These give colour and scent in the summer, adding to the tranquillity of your space. So if you want something truly special for your garden, forget the shed idea, grab your teabag of choice and go meet Calum. You’ll be impressed.

Based in Hayle, Cornwall, although originally from Stoke-on-Trent, the Chown family have been involved in manufacture of china for over 50 years. We are one of the few producers in the UK who hand print silk screen fine bone china and have over 30 years experience in printing ceramics. We hand print, decorate and kiln fire to your specification so that you have unique tableware, this may be a particular design, crest or the name of your vessel. Once your design is set up it is then converted to film so that the image can be exposed onto a silk screen, a
screen is made for each colour, the colour then being printed through the relevant screen. Our screen printer, Stewart Chown, is an expert on ceramic colour and is one of very few ceramic screen printers in the UK. When your design has been printed it is coated with a transfer medium and left to dry before being applied to the china by our highly skilled lithographers. The tableware is then fired at a minimum of 850 degrees celsius which fuses the ceramic colour into the glaze of the bone china, this gives the vibrance and durability that fine bone china is known for.
Fine bone china is strong and long lasting and the quality will compliment your boat or home. A full design service can be provided if required, in addition to those boat owners who know exactly what they require.

A HIDDEN GEM Sail into Castaways, a delightful bistro in a beautiful setting in Mylor Yacht Harbour.
Tucked away in the north western corner of the Fal estuary lies one of Cornwall’s best kept secrets. Mylor Harbour is just a few miles from Falmouth, easily accessed whether by car or boat. With sweeping views across the Carrick Roads towards Trelissick House it combines the hustle and bustle of a busy marina and boatyard with the beauty and serenity of the striking south Cornish coastline. Often thought to be the preserve of the
yachting and fishing communities, Mylor is surprisingly welcoming to everyone, hosting a choice of restaurants and abundant waterborne activities; the perfect setting to enjoy a refreshing drink or meal overlooking the gently bobbing boats on the water. In the midst of it all sits a true gem: Castaways is an Italian influenced bistro perched on the old naval quay with stunning views across the harbour and beyond. It offers a wide ranging choice of

mouth-watering dishes to suit all ages and tastes; from locally landed fish to Cornish steaks as well as pizzas and pasta dishes. Lighter bites, including a most delicious crab sandwich, are also available. The bistro is located at the start of a delightful walk from Mylor to Flushing and dogs are made most welcome with treats often offered to our well-behaved four-legged friends. Castaways East, a pub, situated in the old naval mess hall adjacent
to the main Castaways bistro is taking on a Spanish theme for the upcoming season. The team will be offering Mediterranean dishes of paella and tapas, washed down with Spanish wines and sangria, as well as a selection of local and craft beers. Castaways East is now open for the summer season, so give it a go!
Weddings in Mylor Both Castaways and Castaways East are available for weddings, corporate events and private parties. The highly experienced team of chefs love working with the happy couple to produce your perfect menu. Parties in excess of one hundred people can be catered for, while Castaways East can play host to more intimate gatherings. Natalie and Phil chose Castaways as their venue of choice to celebrate their big day in June last year. “We just wanted to say a massive thank you to the whole of the team at Castaways”, says Natalie. “You all did such an amazing job. The room looked amazing, the service was prompt, nothing was too much trouble… I could go on and on!” Phil adds: “We had the best day ever and without all of you it wouldn’t have been possible.” Whatever the time of year, and whatever the occasion, a trip to Mylor is always worthwhile and you can be sure of a warm welcome in Castaways or Castaways East. FARM TO FORK The freshest fruit, veg and produce delivered direct from Food Box Farm.
Many dream of escaping the hustle and bustle of London for Cornwall, surrounded by miles of beautiful coastline, perhaps buying boat or having a go at watersports. But unfortunately for many it remains just that: a dream. For Tara and Gareth the new owners of Food Box Farm, however, the calling was too great to resist, and they eventually took the plunge. Following many great holidays to Gwithian in west Cornwall,
enjoying the extensive local Cornish produce on offer, an opportunity came up that was simply unmissable and they moved down this year with their two boys. But London’s loss is our gain, as Food Box Farm continues to showcase the fabulous produce grown, reared, baked, brewed and caught right here in Cornwall. Relocating the businesss from Gunwalloe to Long Rock in Penzance, Tara and Gareth have created a new website, and take great pleasure in discovering new local suppliers to call on. “When in season we source local veg and fruit from producers within west Cornwall”, explains Tara. “Strawberries from Hayle; courgettes, rainbow chard, cherries and peppers from Gulval; and new potatoes, spring cabbage and cauliflower from Leedstown. Veg is cut in the morning and on your table in the evening.” But it’s not just fruit and veg, as Gareth continues: “Our Essential Meat Boxes are always popular with locals and we provide a service to marinas, campsites and self-
catering cottages delivering our special boxes, such as the barbeque boxes, cream tea boxes, freshly-made curry kit boxes and breakfast boxes in various sizes.” You’ll also find delicious homemade pies, rare-breed free-range hens’ eggs. Meanwhile, the bakery provides a wide range of wonders freshly-baked to order, from soda bread right through to a traditional Victoria sponge cake, not to mention excellent pasties for those after a true taste of Cornwall. Food Box Farm provides a fantastic service to west Cornwall delivering veg boxes, weekly shop boxes and many items direct to customer’s front doors, free to all TR postcodes when spending over £30. So if you fancy sampling some delicious local produce, and steering clear of the big supermarket chains, why not try something new and give it a go! CHARITY
FALMOUTH
Mandy meets Shaun Pascoe of Turn to Starboard, the inspirational sailing charity helping war veterans adjust back to life at home.
You may have noticed the beautiful Spirit of Falmouth, a 91ft traditional pilot schooner, out on the water but not known that it is owned by Turn to Starboard, a Cornish charity with a national remit to work with veterans, who have been affected by military operations, helping to get them back on track with their lives. I went to meet its founder and Chief Executive, Shaun Pascoe, who knows first hand what it’s like trying to readjust to ‘normal’ life after serving in a war zone.
Shaun, who founded Turn to Starboard

Background Shaun joined the Air Force in 1997 and went on to become Commander of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT): small teams of highly trained medics who fly out to the frontline in Chinooks to rescue and treat medical emergencies. The hugely personable Shaun explains, “Apache helicopters were used to clear the ground ahead of us… but the Chinook is much faster so, to get to the wounded as quickly as we could, we often arrived first with no cover

whatsoever… that certainly concentrates the brain!” Shaun is extremely candid about his experience and it’s obvious why he is such a popular speaker, being invited to talk all over the country. “I served in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and had four sorties to Afghanistan, with lots of small sorties in between. It was after my second posting that I started to find things really difficult, feeling lost; I was displaying all the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”
The charity During his last year in service Shaun did the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore course and Cruising Instructor. “Within two weeks of sailing I just started to feel in a better place,” says Shaun. So he turned down a job with
GET INVOLVED There are many ways to get involved with the charity. See the website for more details. Shaun’s biggest concern is that there are veterans suffering alone in Cornwall who know nothing about Turn to Starboard. If you know of someone… or if you would like to volunteer, just get in touch.
the NHS to concentrate on setting up Turn to Starboard. “I had an office at home and started to present to major charities, I just wanted to do the right thing!” It’s testament to his determination and charm that he has all the major veterans’ charities on board, including Help for Heroes. He’s had tea with Prince Charles and the Prince’s Trust gave Spirit of Falmouth to the charity; there is an impressive list of trustees too, with Air Marshall Sir Dusty Miller KBE as Patron, and Stephen Dash, MD of Dash (South West) as Chairman. Large international companies like International Paints and the Yacht Company are also keen partners, Rustler Yachts are helping them with another boat hull and Dorian Smith from Tresco gives them a cottage on the island and hosts them on their training sails to the Isles of Scilly.
Why it works “Once you are on a boat you have to deal with things in a different way; a group of guys who don’t know each other but have had similar experiences. It’s all about attitude, values and behaviour.” Shaun explains. The charity offers veterans anything from a cup of coffee and a chat, a day out on a boat with their family, to the full Yachtmaster course and everything inbetween. Shaun continues. “One young boy told me: my dad came back from Afghanistan then when we went sailing he really came
back; he was laughing for the first time.” Shaun has many such stories: another is of a veteran who hadn’t been outside his house for four years because of PTSD and who’s now doing his Yachtmaster. “Don’t get me wrong this is no magical alternative cure,” Shaun tells me, “we insist that our veterans fully engage with their treatment, but it definitely helps. And it is just the right thing to do!”
Time off There hasn’t been much time off while setting up the charity, but since discovering the solace of being at sea, it’s no surprise that Shaun has recently bought his own ketch to sail. He has six children aged 25 to 13 who all get involved, along with his wife Clare, he tells me: “She has been there for me through it all. She is a very wise and beautiful lady.” He loves watching his son play rugby for Truro. “There is a group of dads, and mums, who stand on the touchline who are very special to this charity. It wouldn’t be here without them, whatever the obstacle or whatever we needed… they came up with an answer or the goods. It’s a very special club!” Turn to Starboard 01326 314262 info@turntostarboard.co.uk www.turntostarboard.co.uk

From world-class sailing waters to Falmouth Haven’s excellent facilities, Falmouth really does have it all, both afloat and ashore.
With a rich maritime history, and close relationship with the sea, Falmouth has long been a popular destination with mariners. Over the years, the bustling port has evolved and now prides itself as being a place of inspiration to sailors, artists, explorers, musicians and boat builders, to name but a few. Home to a host of local galleries, fabulous eateries, chandleries and boat specialists, artisan and mainstream shops as well as numerous attractions, including the National Maritime Museum and the historic Pendennis Castle, Falmouth is now most definitely a place
worth spending a while and Falmouth Haven’s spectacular location enables visitors to stroll off their boat, straight into the town centre. On your arrival into Falmouth Haven you’ll be greeted by a team member who will welcome you to Falmouth and ensure you have all you require – including your Falmouth Havencard. After a few days at sea, many sailors will embark and wish to head straight for a good hot meal and Falmouth doesn’t disappoint. cosying up for a romantic meal for two, you will be spoilt for choice. Once tummies are full and appetites are satiated, take a stroll down the high street, stocking up on provisions and browsing for local curios. Enjoy a waterside drink before heading back to your craft and falling into a lazy slumber. With so much to see and do, it is advisable to plan ahead. If you fancy getting under the skin of Cornwall’s maritime history then a trip to the National Maritime Museum is a must. Its popular Viking exhibition includes a full-scale replica of a Viking ship and many rare antiquities whilst more modern

displays enable visitors to get up close and personal with Olympic boats. After all the action, head to the café for a refreshment or take a stroll around Discovery Quay which boasts an enviable array of shops, restaurants, businesses and cafes. The town itself is a network of lanes and alleys, centred around ‘The Moor’ – a once marshy tract of land that now serves as the town’s focal point. It is here that you will find the town’s library, the award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery and the 111 steps of Jacob’s Ladder, named after a prominent local businessman who commissioned the steps to
connect some of his terrace properties with his businesses premises in the town. Hire a bike and explore the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty which gently frame Falmouth. Soak up the breathtaking Cornish coastline from Pendennis point or head around the corner to Gyllyngvase beach. Overlooked by Henry VIII’s Pendennis Castle, the beach is home to Gylly Café where you can sit and soak up the vista whilst indulging in a home cooked meal. With Falmouth considered as one of the best sailing waters in the UK, it’s no surprise that the town and its surrounding areas are home to a host of boat repair and marine service industries. If your yacht is in need of repairs then there is no better place to be holed up. Broken sail, minor collision, gel coat repair? No problem. Need to stock up on specialist provisions before departing? Your only difficulty will be choosing where to go. And don’t forget, the friendly team at Falmouth Haven are always on hand to point you in the right direction and ensure you get the best out of your stay. Shining a spotlight on the inspiring work of the RNLI, with a look at some of the stations across Cornwall.
Arriving at The Lizard Lifeboat Station is like stumbling upon a top-secret base out of Thunderbirds – in every sense. We’re privileged to climb into a small metal cage hugging the sheer cliff and slowly descend 50 metres or so, to reach the ultra-hightech, wave-shaped building, cleverly concealed in the natural, rocky Kilcobben cove below. Entering the building does nothing to dampen this feeling. Taking centre stage is a 31-ton, £2.7 million, state-of-theart vessel, flanked by a veranda set over three levels, with uniformed personnel occasionally scurrying into various side rooms. The station’s huge metal doors open wide onto the waves below, framing a matchless view across the Channel and Celtic Sea. The imposing, self-righting, allweather Tamar Class lifeboat sits poised on a purpose-built pneumatic pivot, waiting for the signal; ready to slide down the slipway into the depths below.
words by:
Felix Rowe
The station’s very existence, in this remote, tricky-to-access location, is a testament to human endeavour. From the fundraising, to the design and build, right through to its operation – almost everything about it represents a huge feat of engineering, from the large scale down to the tiniest detail. We’re here on a sublime Tuesday evening to witness its launch for a routine training exercise. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Ned Nuzum, greets us warmly, introducing us to Coxswain, Andrew Putt, Chairman, Dr Chris Cuff, and resident photographer Geoff Squibb. As he shows us around, Chris speaks with pride of the station and crew. “The kit has to be right – no corner cutting”, he says. “If we’re sending crews out to sea, often in challenging conditions, we need to provide them with the best kit possible.” The new station is the latest in a long line to have operated out of The Lizard over the years. Lifeboats of the peninsula

still hold the RNLI’s record for the largest number of people rescued in a single operation. In March 1907, lifeboat crews from Cadgwith, Coverack, Porthleven and The Lizard rowed out for a staggering 16-hours straight to rescue 456 of the passengers and crew aboard the liner SS Suevic, having foundered on the rocks, close to Lizard Point. Of course, the Lizard Lifeboat Station is but one of 237 lifeboat stations across the UK, and the 15 across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly – an essential pillar of our coastal communities. In conjunction with the 200+ lifeguarded beaches, they work tirelessly to keep our shores safe and educate us on sea safety, ensuring we can all enjoy the water while staying out of harm’s way. Each station, its craft, operational approach and crew members themselves are cleverly adapted to suit the specific environment and unique geographical anomalies they face – from the launching
method, right down to the type of antifouling paint used on the hull. So, in the same way that the Lizard’s station design is informed by its remote location, other stations are finely tuned to their respective settings. The boats at Penlee, for example, are moored in Newlyn’s comparatively deep harbour, whilst the St Ives station utilises a recently commissioned, purposebuilt launch and recovery system enabling the crew to operate the Shannon Class lifeboat directly from the extensive flat beach, regardless of the state of tide. Smaller craft and RIBs are used to access shallower water and rocky inlets that the larger boats can’t reach. Being a charity, fundraising plays an integral role in enabling the RNLI to continue operating. The RNLI relies critically on donations and the generosity of others. Penlee is currently appealing to help build a new station, creating more crew space, a dedicated training room, as well as a

visitor centre to highlight Penlee’s rich heritage. You can help by visiting: www.rnlipenleelifeboat.org.uk/appeal While crew have traditionally been largely made up of fishermen, these days the recruitment pool is surprisingly diverse, as Chris explains. “The RNLI is a ‘broad church’ organisation, encompassing members from all walks of life.” As I discovered on an exercise with Penlee last autumn, a typical crew might consist of a doctor, a chaplain, a fisherman, an armed forces veteran, a

cinematographer, amongst others, all united by a common goal, a respect for the sea and a passion for adventure. The flipside, however, is that new volunteers don’t necessarily have existing maritime experience to draw upon, necessitating intense training programmes and first-class facilities. Naturally, keeping up competency is essential – crew have to complete one exercise per month to ensure the entire roster is fully skilled, regardless of who is called upon on any given day. The Lizard’s Coxswain, Andrew Putt, who has been with the RNLI for 31 years, explains the qualities needed in volunteers: “Commitment without recognition; someone who’s keen to get up in the middle of the night to go to the aid of others.” It’s an inclusive spirit – whether man or woman, young or old, provided you can meet the challenging physical and emotional demands, you can become a crew member. They are the everyday heroes who risk their own lives to go to the aid of others. The plaque in the entrance to Penlee Station, commemorating the December 1981 crew of the Solomon Browne, who tragically died in a heroic rescue attempt, reminds us of the very real dangers faced over the years. But there are so many ways to make a difference, other than those at the sharp edge. As Ned emphasises, “If you want to volunteer in any capacity, whether boat crew,

prevent incidents before they happen. A visit to the local lifeboat station is a small reminder of the wonderful work carried out by the RNLI, the resolve of those involved, and how important it is for us all to get behind this indispensable national institution. Keep up the good work!
Now in its third year, the RNLI’s national drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water, aims to halve accidental coastal deaths by 2024 in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The campaign focuses on the dangerous unpredictability of the sea, highlighting dangers which get many people into trouble including cold water shock, powerful rip currents and slips, trips and falls near the coast. Visit RNLI.org/respectthewater to find info on how to stay safe. The charity also aims to implement effective drowning prevention strategies in the highest risk areas internationally, through influence, education, rescue and supervision.

Indeed, education is playing an increasingly important role in the RNLI’s strategy to

In the UK, there are an estimated 2.3 million people living with Coronary Heart Disease, with around two million people affected by angina (chest pains, the most common symptom of coronary heart disease). Many more have silent and undiagnosed coronary disease which affects both men and women, but often occurs earlier in men. It is one of the major causes of death in the western world, although modern treatments have produced major improvements in survival over the past ten years. Should your heart need a little more help than diet and exercise, you’ll be glad to know that treatments for heart disease have come a long way over recent years and many are far less invasive than you might imagine. Each depends on the type and

severity of the condition you have. In some cases, medication may be an option and certain drugs have been shown to reduce the risk of heart attack by up to a third. If medication isn’t enough for your condition, then Coronary Intervention is the next step. Increasingly, keyhole techniques are used instead of open heart surgery, and one of the most common of these is angioplasty with stent implantation. This is PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention) and it is now offered at Duchy Hospital in Truro, on a private basis. Duchy Hospital is Cornwall’s only private hospital and treats both Private and NHS patients. The hospital has recently undergone a multi-million pound

expansion which included a new Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, giving cardiologists state-of-the art facilities in which to perform these life-saving operations. The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory also has a laminar flow system, meaning the system frequently changes and filters the air so that it is classified as ultra-clean, which helps Duchy Hospital to maintain its incredibly low rates of infection; Duchy Hospital has had no occurrences of MRSA in the past six years. Consultant Cardiologist Dr Stephen Evans explains how the procedure works: “Under X-ray guidance, a fine tube is inserted usually into the wrist and then passed up to the heart. “The affected artery is located and a tiny balloon is gently inflated at the site of narrowing that is causing symptoms and potentially threating a heart attack. A stent mounted on another balloon is then deployed at the site of the narrowing to scaffold the artery and restore normal blood flow.” A stent is like a small spring, made from medical grade stainless steel. Stent implantation can often be performed as a day case and is a very effective treatment that is much less invasive than open heart surgery. DON’T BE FOOLED AGAIN Financial adviser Alan Powell helps us avoid the fake pension scams fooling millions. With the rules on pensions changing recently, we now have a lot more freedom in managing our retirement pots. We can enjoy pension benefits from age 55 and take up to 25% immediately as tax-free cash, enabling reinvestment in property or more favourable schemes. While this allows greater financial flexibility, it can also leave us open to potential fraudsters taking advantage of people’s eagerness to explore new avenues for generating future income. Alan Powell of Elite Wealth Management, an independent, financial adviser from Heamoor, is all too aware of the dodgy schemes out there. Alan tells us of a couple who had received advice from a Gibraltar based company regarding his two pensions. “The company offered to consolidate his pensions into a drawdown type scheme, pay him his tax-free cash and then invest the rest of the funds ready for when he needed his income.” However, on investigation, it soon transpired the scheme was a scam and the company wasn’t regulated as it claimed. “They would’ve been charged an extortionate 9% initial fee, 4% on going annual fee and would probably never have seen their funds again, as has happened to many other poor unfortunate trusting elderly people.”
Common pension scam warning signs are missed by nearly 90% of people, research by the Citizens Advice Bureau has found. We all like to think we can spot fraudsters, but many miss red flags such as high investment returns and cold calling. Scammers’ tactics are also shifting, moving towards other tricks such as ‘free’ reviews and ‘advice’. Gillian Guy, Chief Executive of the Citizens Advice Bureau, says: “It’s difficult for consumers to stay ahead of pension scams as they evolve. Many scammers use professional looking websites and leaflets to fool their victims into signing up to free pensions advice.” Its research also showed consumers aged 55-64 are most likely to take advantage of the pension freedoms and receive such calls. So what’s the solution? Only take financial advice from a trusted, regulated adviser such as Alan at Elite Wealth Management. Alan says: “I’ve personally come across two couples who nearly fell for this scam – please don’t be the next! I’d urge anyone wanting investment advice, or a review of their financial affairs, to only deal with a regulated financial adviser, from either a recommendation or a site such as VouchedFor or Unbiased.” Contact Alan now for bespoke, holistic and independent advice that you can trust.

TRIED AND TESTED Alan was recently named eighth best in the UK as well as ‘The Best in the South West’ in a supplement in The Sunday Times.
“I was very proud to get such a high rating. I’d like to thank all my clients for taking the time to write their reviews. Without them, I wouldn’t have the business I do today.”
