The Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion This is one of the most popular exhibits on the whole showground. And it’s not really a big surprise. Once you step inside the three huge canvas pavilions, you will be overwhelmed by sixty amazing Cornish food and drink producers. Only delicacies lovingly made in Cornwall are allowed in, so you are guaranteed a mouth-watering array of fantastic produce. Many shows have food halls but none that we know of can put together such a display of sumptuous food and drink from a single county. It is a real celebration of the ever-growing produce industry right here in Cornwall. Don’t miss your chance to try and buy some of the best food around. Plus there’s also chance to rest your legs and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea and a slice of cake; it’d be rude not to!

It’s a show all of its own, with the lake as its main feature. There’s a daily programme of interesting demonstrations that take place in, on and around this calm oasis. The Cornish Cowboy, Dan Wilson, presents his practical horsemanship demonstration. Dan works with horses daily and will show you how he deals with a myriad of vices with almost instant results. The Sheep Show is entertaining and will teach you all about these creatures. Ferret racing, bird of prey flying and the Dog & Duck Show are among the numerous displays not to be missed.
Music and dance Two official music stages – Kelly’s of Bodmin and the Western Morning News – complemented by the BBC Introducing stage within the BBC Radio Cornwall Theatre – offer a real variety of musical acts on each of the show days. So much music, it’s a festival in itself! The Cornwall Festival of Dance, found on the flower show lawn, is where you can enjoy dance performances covering styles from belly dancing to modern dance – and everything in between. Morris dancers take to the showground avenues on the Saturday.

The Main Ring Headline entertainment acts, hot competition and agricultural tradition are enjoyed in equal measure by the show-goers who flock to enjoy all that the main ring has to offer. This year the equine stars and stunt riders from the BBC’s Poldark series will perform an all-action horseback show. Katy Cropper, the first female winner of One Man & His Dog, will show off her unbelievable sheep dog handling skills in tandem with her 13 year-old daughter Henrietta. The RAF Falcons drop in again on all three days. Plus you can expect show jumping classes and inter hunt-relay heats and final to set pulses racing. The grand parade of prizewinning horses and livestock are always a real spectacle.
The Flower Show A well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s best, the flower show is well worth a visit. Venture inside the cavernous marquee and you’ll be amazed by the numerous floral exhibits that will greet you. The trade section exudes quality, colour and style. There’s also the demonstration theatre with a programme packed with great themes and valuable advice on various aspects of horticulture. All the exhibitors will be pleased to talk about their own area of expertise and of course, more than happy to sell you some of their wonderful plants to take home.

The Steam Fair The bustling traditional steam fair takes you back a few generations; soak up the nostalgia, sounds and smell of the era! Enjoy the rides and fairground pleasures of yesteryear – fun for all ages. But there are also impressive static displays with rare machines from workhorse steam engines to vintage tractors and implements. A full, varied and fun day is guaranteed, but if you’ve got an extra day or two to spare, you can enjoy everything that’s on offer at a slightly more relaxed pace. Cornwall’s finest Championing the fantastic local producers who have put Cornwall firmly on the foodie map.
W
e all know Cornwall is famed for its stunning coastline, thriving art scene and beautiful harbour villages. But it’s also rightly being celebrated more and more as a fantastic foodie destination with fabulous produce. The Duchy is dotted with independent farms, artisan producers, and craft breweries creating award-winning food and drink that’s in high demand, both nationally and further afield. From a thriving fishing industry to dairy delicacies, we really do have it all! One success story is strawberry specialists, Boddington’s Berries. The farm near Mevagissey draws on the south coast’s mild climate and fertile soil to produce its berries. Now in its third generation since opening as a market garden in the 1940s, the family have added delicious, quality preserves with a high fruit content to their fantastic range of products. Supplying fresh strawberries and conserve to wholesalers, caterers and retailers, you’re bound to come across Boddington’s popular strawberry conserve at hotels, restaurants, shops, garden centres and holiday parks. It’s the perfect ingredient for the ultimate Cornish cream tea. Another heart-warming tale is that of the Cornish Gouda Company, the brainchild of Giel Spierings, the youngest son from a small family dairy farm. Due to poor milk prices, he returned home from school one day to
find a ‘for sale’ sign on the farm gate, and so decided to produce cheese in hope of saving his parents’ farm. Out of adversity came triumph, utilising the whole farm to produce the delicious cheese, from the pedigree animals – all born and reared on the farm, right down to the feed, made using the best crops to produce the best cheese. Ranging from four months old to over two years, Cornish Gouda is everything from smooth and creamy to a strong, rich flavour with crystals that melts in your mouth. Nothing beats a proper Cornish cider to accompany a fine cheese, except perhaps a large glass of red wine. Either way, we recommend a visit to Polgoon, a family-run vineyard, dedicated to producing awardwinning artisan Cornish ciders, wines and juices on its farm in Penzance. Visit the onsite shop and deli to discover a range of local produce as well as Polgoon products. You can also visit Polgoon for a vineyard tour and tasting, giving a fascinating insight into the activities of a working vineyard and orchard. Open seven days a week, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, Sunday 10.30am to 4pm. Even better, you can order Polgoon products online, where you’ll find a range of gifts and hampers. But this is just a small selection of some of the incredible produce coming out of Cornwall right now. So head to the Royal Cornwall Show to discover more.
