Famed for its leisurely walks along the creek as it meanders its way through the village, Mylor Bridge is also home to the Lemon Arms. Spend a day exploring the amazing riverside and rural walks along the Fal River, before stopping by the Lemon Arms and refuelling. The team here have built a reputation for a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The chefs provide a seasonally changing food menu that’s outstanding value for money and one which really celebrates the depth and quality of the region’s amazing produce. The front of house team is always happy to help you find your perfect tipple from the bar. Whether

Down on the farm

Tregullas is the most southerly farm on the UK mainland. Family run, the grass-fed sheep and beef suckler herd thrive on the lush pastures which are kissed by the sea breezes and overlook the ocean. The family also run a thriving farm shop selling their own meat, vegetables and lots of local groceries. You can even pick up your daily newspapers or a magazine alongside your farm favourites before stopping off at their delightful traditional tearoom for a light lunch or a Cornish cream tea.

The family has been very busy over the last year, working on utilising their wool crop. Wool is a fabulous sustainable product, but trading raw fleeces has become uneconomical in the current climate. Innovative as ever, Tregullas now have

A curation of Cornish memories

Spread across three floors and five exhibition halls, The Museum of Cornish Life in Helston houses one of the county’s largest collections of social history. Inside, you’ll find artefacts linked to Cornish domestic life, mining, education, farming, and archaeology – a collection that, combined, comprises thousands of everyday objects from ages past. Visitors can also explore displays that celebrate Helston’s most renowned people and events, including Henry Trengrouse, an inventor whose work helped to save

thousands of lives at sea, and of course Flora Day, the town’s annual festival celebrating the coming of spring. All held within an historic market building, with regular workshops, talks, special events, and a temporary exhibition space, at the Museum of Cornish Life, there’s something new to see every time you visit. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with free entry for all.

Cornish charity introduces Bereavement Super Heroes

A new set of superheroes have arrived at Cornwall Hospice Care in the form of toy cats, dogs, dinosaurs and rabbits. They’ve been beautifully made and donated to the Cornish healthcare charity by a company called ‘Scamp and Dude’ and they’ll be used by the Bereavement Counsellors at Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices.

“A colleague flagged the company up to me,” says Ange Bunt. “I’d never heard of them but when they sell a toy, they also give one away to where it might be needed. They’ve already sent us 23.”

The toys are dressed in a cloak that has written on it ‘a superhero has my back’. Each has a pocket in to which you can put something special like a picture, a shell or a note from a loved one. The characters also have a label

that says ‘superpower button’ that you can press while thinking positive thoughts.

“I’ll be using them as part of my ‘teddy therapy’,” adds Ange. “They’re toys that can be given to children by terminally ill parents or grandparents that’s from them. You can add perfume or after shave and the recipient can hug the character and feel the love and memories of the person who’s died. They give a lot of comfort and, of course, anyone can have one, it’s not just about leaving a gift for a child. Memory boxes are special but you can’t hug them, these are very personal and tactile.”

Pulling on the threads of connection

Whether it’s the colourful forms of a boat against nature’s backdrop or the play of textures in quaint harbours, Chloe loves to paint bold compositions in vibrant colours that complement modern interiors. Her paintings often find their way into the homes of boat owners, where they evoke memories of adventure, nostalgia and the communities of Cornwall.

Using acrylic and mixed media on wooden panel, ‘Threads of Connection’ (pictured) captures four colourful boats tethered together in Coverack Harbour. The piece hangs in the home of one of the boat’s former owners and brings back wonderful memories of time spent growing up in Coverack.

To meet Chloe and to see her work in person, visit Coast Colour Canvas Gallery at Roskilly’s Farm from 1st June 2024.

Sand betweenYOUR TOES

Whether you’re bringing your dog, a bucket and spade, or just a good book, the Lizard has a beach for everybody.

10 | WILD LIZARD COVER FEATURE

epending on who you ask, ‘the beach’ can mean many things. It can mean suiting up and braving the cold in pursuit of the winter swells, just as it can mean breaking out the parasol and drenching yourself in sunshine with nothing else to do but bask. It can also mean searching the rockpools for living treasure, scouring the shoreline for sea glass, or giving your canine companion a chance to stretch those legs and run truly free. Fortunately, the Lizard Peninsula is as diverse as it is beautiful, which means that whichever definition best describes your beachy idyll, there is a stretch of shoreline here just waiting for you to explore.

We’ll start with some hidden treasures. Dollar Cove, for example, just a stone’s throw from the popular sands of Gunwalloe's Church Cove, is named after the silver dollars that have occasionally washed up over the years since the nearby wreck of a 17th century ship. Situated just a short hop from the nearby National Trust car park, whilst visitors are unlikely to strike silver nowadays, there is still the chance of a good haul of smooth and varicoloured sea glass, the hunt for which can absorb hours and is a great way to keep little ones engaged. For curious kiddies, low tide reveals a number of rockpools, teeming with life and providing a fascinating lens into Cornwall’s coastal biodiversity.

Just a stone’s throw from Dollar Cove, Gunwalloe's Church Cove provides a very large stretch of sand for families dreaming of days spent throwing frisbees, playing cricket and damming the gentle stream. A small café behind Dollar Cove offers a selection of refreshments (what is a beach day without an ice cream?) and with lifeguards patrolling between 10am and 6pm from 13th July and 1st September, it’s a safe spot for family swims too. Moving further south, just a ten-minute walk along the coast path from Gunwalloe, you’ll find Poldhu. At low tide, this is another long stretch of sand that’s great for families. With parking almost on the beach and the popular Poldhu Beach Café situated just off the sand, serving hot food, refreshments and beach gear, you needn’t laden yourself down with more bags than your arms can carry. Add to this the Dan Joel Surf School giving beginners the chance to try their hand at riding Cornish waves and you and yours are sure to sleep well when the day comes to an end.

Continue in the same direction and eventually you’ll come to Mullion Cove, then after that, Polurrian. The small stretch of sand at Mullion Cove, found within the walls of Mullion’s rugged Victorian harbour, is dog friendly all year round, great if you’re looking for a sandy stomp with your pooch. Onto Polurrian and, whilst there is a dog ban in place between 1st July and 31st August, 10am to 6pm, there is a large expanse of fine golden sand here that will be a dream come true for anybody hoping to spread out and sprawl beneath the sun. In fact, when the sun is out and the seas are calm, you could be forgiven for forgetting that you’re in England! A lack of facilities by the beach may not suit everybody and with lifeguards only patrolling on weekends during the summer, it’s well worth being wary of the water if going for a swim. Still, it’s a beautiful beach to visit and popular among those seeking a day by the sea away from the summer crowds.

Another spot for those seeking some quietude is Housel Bay. Reached by a 15-minute walk along the coast path from Lizard Point, the scenery here is staggering. The cove you’re looking for can be found at the bottom of the rugged serpentine cliffs and, whilst the stretch of white sand here is comparatively small, it is absolutely stunning, offering swimmers the chance to enjoy the most unimaginably clear turquoise waters. High cliffs provide shelter

from the prevailing westerly winds, making it a lovely sheltered spot for a picnic and a dip, but be warned: the cove does get cut off during higher tides, so be sure to check tidal conditions ahead of your visit.

No self-respecting guide to the Lizard’s beaches would be complete without at least a mention of Kennack Sands. Split into two, known as Kennack ‘East’ and Kennack ‘West’, if a family day by the sea is what you’re looking for, then look no further. Firstly, it’s conveniently serviced by a car park and two cafés, meaning you can take a short stroll from your car to the sand without the luggage necessary to feed the masses! It’s a popular beach for surfers too, with frequent breaks of four to five feet, which in turn makes it a great spot for those who enjoy the spectator sport that comes with watching the waves roll in. During the summer you can often spot basking sharks swimming docilly out in the bay, a spectacle for visitors of any age, and with so much sand on which to build, dig and play games, parents can rest assured that their little ones will burn off any and all of that excess holiday energy. Dogs are also welcome at Kennack Sands, except during July and August between 10am and 6pm, when a seasonal dog ban is in place.

Alternatively, if you’re happy wandering along the sand with your pooch on a lead, then why not head a little further up the coast to Coverack?

You need only keep them on the lead in June, July and August; for the rest of the year, they can run free, bounding along the sand and shingle as you admire the shimmering seas, gazing out towards the notorious Manacles reef where many ships have met their end during Cornwall’s seafaring history. Distinctive natural walls frame the beach; in fact, according to Geography South West, it is one of few places in the world where those interested in geology can see a fossil ‘moho’ – the boundary between the Earth’s upper serpentine mantle and the crust beneath. Lined with quintessentially Cornish cottages that perch on the hills overlooking the water, Coverack is a haven for traditional beach goers; kayakers and swimmers can often be found capitalising on the calm waters here, as can parents, who are left free to relax and enjoy some adult conversation whilst the kids spread out and play on the sand.

These beaches offer just a sample of what the Lizard’s coastline has to offer. Lace up your boots and walk along the peninsula’s coastal paths and you’re sure to stumble across more of the area’s beautiful hidden gems. When you do, take some snaps and share them with us here at Cornwall Living! We’d love to see where your Wild Lizard adventures take you – share your snaps and intrepid tales with us on social media @cornwalllivinguk.

Read, Watch, EXPERIENCE

The Lizard provides sanctuary for an array of wildlife, with sightings of native and migratory species common. Gunwalloe Church Cove is a great example, where the reed marshes towards the back of the beach provide a habitat of national importance to both local and migratory birds, including rare but often very colourful bee-eaters.

BRINGING YOUR DOG?

Dog owners should always check for any bans on canine companions before walking on their local beach. However, bans on many beaches run between 10am and 6pm, leaving you free to enjoy the beach before the crowds arrive and after they’ve departed. What’s not to love about that?

WATCH

HUNGRY?

All that sea air is sure to work up an appetite. Fortunately, the Lizard is host to an array of fantastic eateries. For just a flavour of what’s on offer, check out Coverack Bay Hotel on page 21, Fat Apples Café on page 25 and Dan Dan the Lobster Man on page 37.

EXPERIENCE

Home of the renowned Cadgwith Singers and one of the Lizard’s most traditional fishing villages, the pebbly beach at Cadgwith is well worth a visit. The Cadgwith Cove Inn is right next to the beach too, serving an excellent menu of home cooked treats. It’s also dog friendly!

SECRET LAKE On the

Hidden just a few miles south of the Helford River, a hive of accessible activity is bubbling away in the privacy of an abandoned quarry.

Off a quiet country lane, it’s a jaw-dropping moment coming down to the secrecy of Trevassack Lake, leaving locals wondering why they’ve not been before and holidaymakers coming back for more. Welcome to a new, exciting community hub of watersports, holidays and lakeside café open to everyone!

Owned by Cornish charity Children’s Sailing Trust, the activities are run by CST Experiences; sailing, paddlesports, wild swimming, events and venue hire for birthdays, group meet-ups and even accessible weddings are on offer, with well-being classes such as yoga and pilates held in the lakeside function room, plus the whole site is wheelchair and SEND-friendly.

Just a stone’s throw from the water, Trevassack Holidays is CST’s collection of six accessible holiday properties, with hot tubs set in each deck. Stay a few days and enjoy sunsets over still waters, or book longer and take lessons to earn an RYA qualification on the river – guests get 15% discount on watersports!

The cherry on the lake? The waterside café that reopened for 2024 as Trevassack Lake Café. Here, you can enjoy a little TLC with artisan coffee and cakes, indulge in

gourmet deli brunches or cooked-to-order lunches with a view, open to the general public with everyone’s favourite chef, Andrei, at the helm. Sit inside and dine, eat al fresco on the lakeside deck or brunch at a picnic table on the beach. In doing so you may just find your new favourite eatery! And what’s not to love? Not only is it set beside the shimmering ‘secret’ lake, all profits from your visit will go towards the charity. As a not-for-profit organisation, bookings with CST help support the work of the charity set up by John Green MBE in 1997. He wanted every child to experience the freedom of sailing on the Helford River – that glorious, life-affirming feeling of carving paths through open water, tacking and gybing with a twitch of the rudder and now, thousands of children have taken the helm, working towards their RYA accreditations with pride on both the river and the lake.

TOMORROW

Taking its impact on the environment seriously, Trevena Cross is sowing the seeds for a green and prosperous future.

DID YOU KNOW?

Trevena Cross Nursery’s growing area spans a jaw-dropping 35 acres of land and is maintained by the entire nursery team, who are continually propagating, potting, weeding, watering and organising an incredibly – and increasingly – diverse selection of plants.

Unlike many nurseries, Trevena Cross has the scope to present outstanding, eye-catching plant displays all year round. In fact, the team grow thousands of plants in the nursery at Trevena Cross, meaning that visitors always have their pick of myriad, show-stopping displays. With so much to choose from, it’s also easy to visualise your own garden landscape and how you might improve it, whether you’re looking for rare specimens or simply wish to spruce up your garden.

will help to future-proof its place in the community. But their vision goes further than power; the site also supports the natural ecosystem, with bird boxes and wildlife habitats aplenty, as well as absorbing its fair share of carbon dioxide through the continued production of plants.

Looking to add a tropical touch to your garden?

Trevena Cross is known and loved for its superb collection of larger specimens, including palm trees, olives, citrus, bay and other showstoppers.

As a visitor nowadays though, it’s no longer enough to simply have lots to choose from. As we become more aware of the impact that our purchases have on the environment, it’s more important than ever that we buy from businesses that take their own impact seriously. This is something that Trevena Cross owner Graham Jeffery has done for nearly 50 years. “It’s long been an ambition to become self-sufficient and as ‘off-grid’ as possible,” he explains. “For several years we’ve had our own water supply and have installed biomass boilers in the nursery and the garden centre, to handle all of our heating requirements. But now we’ve taken another big leap forward, having installed a large array of solar panels.”

In actual fact, Trevena Cross now generates enough of its own electricity to power the entire site, which Graham and the team hope

In doing so, it’s able to offset enough carbon to justify sourcing larger specimens, including palm trees, which the newest addition to the nursery is named after. The Palm Tree Bistro, as it’s called, is set to open in March 2024. Set amongst the palms and other subtropical plants, an undercover area will provide a space where guests can settle down and easily lose an hour or two. The new bistro will offer a taste of nature at every level too, from decorative plants giving a nod to the selection available in the shop, to a number of Trevena Cross’ own home-grown ingredients making it into carefully crafted dishes celebrating quality local Cornish produce.

AT THEwater’s edge

The Bay Hotel, Coverack is a place of peace; a luxury retreat where guests can take the time to relax and unwind.

Combining ocean-inspired décor with a warm Cornish welcome, the hotel occupies an elevated position just above the beach. The 14 bedrooms exude understated elegance, each with its own individual style, but all with the comfiest of beds made up with the softest Egyptian cotton linens. Such is the hotel’s proximity to the sea, a morning dip is often the order of the day before a hearty Cornish breakfast, which can be enjoyed on the terrace if the weather’s fine. Those looking for a little more independence can enjoy a self-catering stay in the hotel’s new Sea Pod, with its own garden, well-equipped kitchen, bathroom and large double-bedroom. All are welcome to The Bay, including man’s best friend, who even get their own welcome pack on arrival at reception containing some tasty handmade Paws for Cake biscuits and a voucher for Scoffs Doggy Ice Cream.

Guests can enjoy the finest foodie fayre at Hevva, the hotel’s restaurant. Named for the rousing cry of the huers whose job it was to watch for the tell-tale signs of pilchard shoals, it’s fitting then that the menu here features fish and shellfish in abundance, much of it

sourced from Coverack’s local fishing fleet. Lobsters and Cornish king crab couldn’t be fresher, supplied by Lew who lives just next door, while local hake, line-caught mackerel and Fal oysters all grace the dinner menu, which is carefully curated for seasonality. While dogs are not allowed in Hevva, guests with four-legged friends are welcome to dine in the lounge bar, on the sunny terrace or simply relax amongst the nodding agapanthus in the gardens.

The Bay is a South West Coast Path passport stamping site, such is its proximity to this well-trodden path which is perfect for when it’s walkie time. Or, tide dependent, Coverack’s dog-friendly beach is just a ball throw away!

After a day out and about exploring all that the area has to offer, you're sure to need to refuel, and we can highly reccomend a visit to The Bay Hotel, Coverack.

Spend a cosy night in Honeysuckle Hut

rriving from Devon ten years ago, Jaccie, Ed, Hector and Phoebe took ownership of a courtyard of old farm buildings just up the hill from Porthallow. Having not done anything like this before, as a family they worked tirelessly over a single winter (on a shoestring budget) to bring the old buildings back to life. The café was opened in 2012, hoping to attract walkers from the South West Coast Path. Today, with local support and enthusiasm combined with visitors from near and far, the footfall has grown and grown to the point that Fat Apples now welcomes over 20,000 people a year.

The café menu focuses on home-cooked, freshly made daily salads, crab in season, homemade burgers, sausage rolls and a variety of delicious savoury tarts and cakes. There is also a full breakfast menu, all of which can be enjoyed in the pretty outdoor seating area, or undercover in the café if the weather is inclement.

The site itself is unique, with a wild camping area in the woods which is just a five-minute walk from Porthallow Cove. With space for about ten tents, the wood smoke and quiet space instantly relaxes

campers, evoking the magic of childhood. For those who prefer a little more home comfort, the off-grid Honeysuckle Hut nestles in the woods or, for a bed and breakfast option, you’ll find the delightful Rose's Loft on the converted top floor of the original milking barn. Connecting with nature is easy here and with little to no light pollution, late-night star gazing is a must.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, Phoebe, who trained as a horticulturist at the Eden project, has just written a children’s Cornish adventure story based in the Fat Apples ancient woods, while Jacci has documented the Fat Apples family journey on how they re-started life by setting up their rural café dream, entitled the Future Is In Coleslaw They are currently looking for a publisher to complete this part of the dream!

HEARTA community’s

Situated in the heart of St Keverne, the parish hall is the cultural hub of this lovely Cornish village.

Up and down the land, village and parish halls are the beating heart of rural communities. They provide the meeting point for many a club, WI gathering, amateur theatre production, celebratory supper, council meeting, wedding breakfast or physical training class. The list goes on. They represent an inclusive space and bulwark against the erosion of country life, particularly as traditional stalwarts like pubs and post offices are falling by the wayside. Far more than just the bricks and mortar from which they are constructed, they are an integral part of the the idea of what constitutes village life and as such should be nurtured and cherished and, above all, used on a regular basis.

In St Keverne, the parish hall is just such a space; one of over 400 similar community buildings that can be found in Cornwall, from Sennen in the west to Linkinhorne in the east. The present building came into service in 1979 after the previous one was demolished in 1977, being deemed unfit for service. Run by a committed team of volunteers the hall is totally self-supporting via fund raising

events and money generated by hire fees. It is accessible to everyone, with facilities and access points adapted to be all-inclusive under the Equality Act of 2010.

The internal area benefits from the usual wealth of good facilities, including a substantially sized main hall which can accommodate up to 200 people for weddings, theatre groups and special events; committee room, licensed bar, servery, kitchen (complete with full sets of crockery, cooker, microwave, fridge and the ubiquitous urn). As such, it makes for the perfect space in which to hold your function.

WELL SPENT An evening

A restaurant, distillery, event space and more… Introducing the Inn & Still in Helston.

After a two year renovation by Rebuild South West, which supports long-term unemployed people to gain new skills, return to work or volunteer, the Inn & Still in Helston is now one of this traditional market town’s go-to destinations.

For foodies, the kitchen serves a delightful and ever-changing menu for guests seeking to satiate the kind of appetite that a day exploring the coastal reaches of the Lizard can muster. The bar, meanwhile, serves an extensive rum collection and cocktail menu. In fact, if you hadn’t already guessed, the Inn & Still is exactly that; a place to rest weary feet and refuel, as well as a distillery, home of the popular Bucca Rum, Conger Vodka and Balmaiden Gin, all featuring in various tipples on the tempting cocktail menu.

You can experience all of this inside, enjoying the intimate atmosphere by the woodburner or outside in the beer garden, basking in the glow of the firepit. You can also host your event here, be it a hen do, birthday, christening, or even a business meeting, with

facilities including a projector, private outside space and, once business has adjourned for the day, the bar!

Already one of area’s most popular social spots, the Inn & Still team refuse to rest on their laurels. In fact, drawing on their experience and knowledge in the field, they will soon be launching their own Gin School – a chance for anybody (over the age of 18!) to learn about botanicals and discover the history of distilling, before making their own gin to take home.

Add to all of this a regular schedule of live music, quiz nights and an ever-changing food and drink menu, not to mention the Sunday roast menus that continue to prove a hit amongst locals and visitors, and an evening at the Inn & Still in Helston comes highly recommended.

CREATIVE Co-operatively

Discover

Situated on the timeless Trelowarren Estate, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lizard Art is a co-operative of 14 artists hidden away in a beautiful courtyard of ancient buildings. The Stable Yard Gallery continues to be a hub of activity as the artists display a new exhibition three times a year, in spring, summer and autumn, so there is always something new for the returning visitor to appreciate. Also in the courtyard is the Flora café, open for drinks, snacks and meals, with indoor and outdoor seating amidst the palms providing a relaxing ambience.

After a scenic drive through the estate, an eclectic mix of various styles and techniques is presented in a spacious, airy gallery, encompassing representational and abstract paintings, from exciting seascapes that capture stormy weather to gentle water colours that embrace the warmth of summer. Housing a varied collection of originals, prints and cards, the gallery is run by the artists themselves, which gives them the opportunity to share their enthusiasm about their own work and those of their colleagues – a real highlight for visitors keen to know more. Amongst the collection you’ll also be able to find work from the gallery’s Associate craft members,

which include gorgeous serpentine works, fascinating ceramics, glass, textiles, baskets and jewellery.

For 2024, Lizard Art is planning an early season Little Picture Show commencing on Thursday 28th March. Featuring a collection of delightful smaller pictures hung as a mixed exhibition around the gallery, ideal for those smaller spaces one might have at home, after which the artists will have a rehang for their annual display of new work in the Spring Exhibition.

This year, Lizard Art welcomes Chris Tuff (christuffphoto.com) to the co-operative. As a freelance producer, director and writer, the co-operative is very much looking forward to exhibiting alongside his atmospheric photographs. They’ll also be welcoming back Rebecca Jewell, with her beautiful botanical paintings.

OF CHOICE

A place to relax in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Passing through the quintessential Cornish village of Mullion, the road will straighten out before turning and dipping down to the wonderful cove situated at the end of Nansmellyon Road. Halfway along this journey to the sea you’ll find Trenance Farm Cottages – 12 first-class holiday lets comprising one, two and three-bedroom holiday residences – a base from which to explore the southernmost peninsula in the UK.

It is a walker’s paradise – with the South West Coast Path only a field away, you’ll be able to choose whether to head north to Poldhu to watch the surfers, or south to Kynance Cove. This beautiful inlet is bathed by turquoise waters and was chosen as the backdrop for several scenes in the recent Poldark series. For those wishing to explore a bit further, the tranquil valley of Poltesco is situated on the east coast of the Lizard, just out of Ruan Minor. Once a hub of activity there is evidence of medieval mills, 17th century pilchard cellars and a 19th century serpentine factory, all observable and reachable by the footpath down to the cove.

Unsurprisingly, with its hard rocky coastline combined with close proximity to the entrance to the English Channel, the peninsula has had a beacon of some description to welcome or warn seaborne visitors to these shores for centuries. The Lizard Lighthouse has evolved over the centuries and today is open to the public who wish to learn about this bit of Lizard history.

Set in 13 acres of countryside, Trenance Farm Cottages, a family-run business originally

established in 1981, has seen three generations guide it successfully through the years. It offers dog-friendly accommodation enhanced by an onsite swimming pool (open from late May to September) and games room stacked with all your favourites. There’s something for everyone at Trenance Farm Cottages, which is why so many families keep coming back year after year. It’s the perfect holiday destination. But don’t just take our word for it. They have a 75% repeat customer rate with one guest writing: “An amazing place to stay. We as a family have stayed at Trenance for at least ten years and thoroughly enjoy our stay there. The cottages are clean and comfortable, and facilities are good for families. The delights of Mullion are all within walking distance. Can't wait to go back!” The judges at South West England Prestige Awards were also so impressed by the family ethos that permeates the whole enterprise that they awarded Trenance with the title of Cottage Holiday Accommodation of the Year in 2022/23 and 2023/24!

THE OCEAN Art from

BISH ART is a unique and innovative artistic project that transforms plastic pollution into collages.

Bonnie Steward is the founder and creator of BISH ART. The name is derived from the rubbish she collects from her beach cleans which is subsequently used as the medium for her artworks. Bonnie’s passion for the environment and the beauty of nature comes from the scenic landscapes of west Cornwall, the place she calls home. BISH ART began when Bonnie was only 16 years old, after making a collage of Porthleven Clocktower from plastic waste she found in Porthleven's harbour and beach. “I have been beach cleaning for as long as I can remember,” says Bonnie, “and all my schoolbooks were dedicated to plastic pollution. I grew up in hospitality, so I would constantly pick up after others. From an early age I would use anything discarded to upcycle, including used bottle tops, broken tiles, beer mats, rubber, copper, scrap clothes, glass, and plastic waste. I wanted to use my art as a way of raising awareness of the plastic pollution and its impact on our oceans and wildlife.”

For Bonnie, creating her collages is like solving a puzzle that gradually comes together: “You never know exactly what will have washed up on the beach, but that’s all part of the challenge. I create collages from all the plastic waste that I find in the location that I depict. I do beach cleans regularly, often alone, sometimes with friends or community groups. I collect all kinds of plastic waste, such as crisp packets, fishing net, plastic wrappers, combs and tennis balls.”

When Bonnie has an idea for a collage, she visits the location, sketches the design and then beach cleans continuously throughout the creation process. “I clean the materials and sort them by colour and type, and then store them in my studio,” explains Bonnie. “I work on large scales, collecting rubbish, cleaning, arranging and layering. It is a process that involves patience, meticulousness and passion for the work I create. It’s a very time-consuming process that can take up to a year to complete, depending on the size and complexity of the piece.”

Bonnie’s collages are inspired by the beautiful landscapes and wildlife that surround her, creating a contrast between natural beauty and plastic pollution. She aims to capture the essence and details of each location and its local wildlife, from places such as Porthleven, St Michael’s Mount and Wheal Prosper Tin Mine. “My work is all about creating something people want to look at, based on something we too often look away from,” explains Bonnie. “Through my collages, I aim to capture the beauty of nature, whilst addressing our shared responsibility to protect, restore and sustain them. I use the plastic waste that I find in the location that I depict, to create a connection and a contrast between the natural and the artificial. I hope to inspire people to look closer and deeper at my art. People are often amazed and intrigued by my art, and they appreciate the message and the purpose behind it. I have been able to exhibit my work in various venues and events, such as galleries, festivals and schools.”

One of Bonnie’s recent career highlights has been exhibiting alongside Kurt Jackson. She is currently working on a large piece depicting Church Cove, in Gunwalloe. This is a beautiful and historic location, where the church of St Winwaloe stands on the edge of the beach. She has been collecting plastic waste from this area for many months and is using it to create a collage that captures the charm and the character of this place. “I’ve been working on this piece for almost a year and I can’t wait to share with you the outcome, very soon.”

THE SEA Fresh from

Cornish seafood doesn’t get better than this; cooked and served on the quay overlooking the ocean from whence it came.

The harbour village of Porthleven has become something of a foodie destination, with a host of restaurants, pubs and cafés overlooking the boats bobbing in the harbour, each offering a taste of the sea. Porthleven’s small fleet of day boats can still be seen steaming out of the harbour on days fair and foul, returning to land their catch on the quayside which is eagerly snapped up by awaiting chefs for their ‘plat du jour’. Porthleven’s foodie establishments complement each other well; some are fine dining and some are family favourites, while others offer something unique. Perhaps none more so, than Dan Dan the Lobster Man. The converted shipping container, which is home to Dan Dan the Lobster Man, can be found right on the harbourside. Dan lands his

catch just yards away, which means the team are able to offer the very freshest seafood to locals and visitors straight from his boat to the plate. Promoting local, sustainable fishing is a high priority for the team who have formed a co-operative between themselves and the local fishermen, all of whom receive a fair price for their lobsters.

You’ll find super-fresh lobster, crab and prawn salads, sandwiches and seafood platters on the menu, all of which can be enjoyed at tables overlooking the harbour. Customers are free to bring along a bottle of their favourite wine with them to pop into one of the wine coolers provided. Family and local friends make up the happy team, always greeting customers with a smile and ready to help with seafood recommendations so that they can discover the freshest taste of Cornwall straight from the sea!

Those of us who enjoy live music and theatrical performances down here in Cornwall will be familiar with The Acorn in Penzance, and the news that the venue’s unique character is being carefully restored and enhanced is music to the ears.

Over the past six months, The Acorn team has been working hard to renovate the theatre’s downstairs much-loved Cabaret Bar. The stage was last used for performances in March 2020 but suffered water damage during the lockdown.

As a result of the renovation, the Cabaret Bar has been reignited with more jazz, more style and more glamour! Decorated in moody red and black, true to the elegance of traditional cabaret theatres, the bar is complete with a beautiful oak bar top, efficient new appliances and a fresh font with a range of mouth-watering local draughts for audiences to choose from.

The auditorium itself has been fitted with a shiny new floor and even more licks of paint, all of which add to The Acorn’s welcome.

The stage is now also open for performances, offering artists and audiences alike the chance to experience the intimate atmosphere of this cosy space. The team can’t wait for visitors to sit back, catch up with friends, enjoy their interval drinks and soak up the theatrical ambience of the new Cabaret Bar.

The Acorn is also installing a second staircase from the entrance foyer to the downstairs bar and facilities, which will increase accessibility, safety and ease for visitors as they make their way between pints and plays, songs and spirits! What’s more, new toilet facilities will be added to give the ground floor a fresh, modern remodel, improving the overall experience of nights out at The Acorn. With some exciting events coming up this year, this is a venue to keep on your radar.
