he Lizard is known and loved for its landscape and community. Windswept shores and craggy coves please those in search of some Cornish ‘vitamin sea’, whilst verdant Cornish countryside, woodland and long stretches of coastal path appeal to adventurous types hoping to lace up their boots and explore. To whet your appetite for adventure, you’ll find a selection of our favourite beaches from page , a look at the Lizard’s incredible marine wildlife page , and an insight into the myriad species of butterflies and moths that you’re likely to find here page . One of the key themes in this year’s guide is how we might all do our bit to help protect our most beloved landscapes for future generations to enjoy. From a conversation with Sandy ulfrey of Wildlife roundswell about local efforts to ‘re-wild’ areas of the peninsula page , to how we can all play our part in the fight against climate change page , we discover this year that there are things we can all do to ensure the Lizard, and the wider world around us, remain as beautiful as they are today. We also take a look at the work being done by Cornwall A B and its Monumental Improvement roject page , which seeks to ensure that our most precious sites of archaeological interest are preserved for generations to come. Unsurprisingly, such a rich tapestry of land and seascapes inspires a wealth of local artists, as we discover on pages , and . In fact, so potent is the creative spirit here that even a national lockdown couldn’t stop local community theatre group, week layers, from filming and releasing a brand-new ‘Zoom’ based production, The Village Hall Murder, as we discover from page . When you add to this a wealth of superb brands and businesses covering everything from outdoor adventure to bespoke kitchen designs and fabulous homewares, and whether you live on the peninsula or are here on holiday, this guide quickly becomes the ultimate handbook for making the most of your time on the Lizard. ...happy reading!

From farm to fork The Amiss family farm the land on the most southerly point in England, the Lizard village. Cattle are reared and grazed on the rich pastures of the beautiful but often windswept Tregullas Farm. Peas and vetches that have been specially planted as pollinators are rotated with grass, chicory and plantain, demonstrating that sustainable farming can indeed benefit the environment. Next door to the farmhouse, you will find a fabulous farm shop and

RE-WILDING THE

LIZARD Founded in 2019 with the aim of taking action to promote the welfare of the Lizard’s wildlife, Sandy Pulfrey introduces Wildlife Groundswell.

W

hat is Wildlife Groundswell, and what exactly does it do? “We started on 29th September 2019, and our aims are two-fold,” explains Sandy Pulfrey, one of the group’s founding members. “Firstly, we want to encourage people to take whatever action they can to make the Lizard more wildlife friendly. Even if this is a plant in a pot, a small garden, a number of acres, or parts of a farm such as hedgerows, it is almost always possible to do something to support wildlife. “Our second aim is to use friendship and social contact to spread what we are doing, so together we will be able to link up corridors of land across the Lizard that enable the free flow of wildlife.

“Given that part of our aim is about spreading through social connection, this side of things has largely been put on hold since March 2020,” says Sandy, referring of course to the Coronavirus pandemic. She explains: “Social connection with face-toface communication, is the best way of having a conversation and sharing ideas,” adding “over a cup of tea and a piece of cake works best!”

ABOVE Allowing land to 're-wild' itself is what Wildlife Groundswell is all about BELOW Vipers bugloss, a wildflower that pollinators love

Interested to find out more, we ask Sandy what the response has been locally since the inception of Wildlife Groundswell. As expected, it’s been very well received, and not just by locals. “We have had a good response from local people and regular holidaymakers who come to visit,” explains Sandy. In fact, despite the di culties presented by the pandemic, there has nevertheless been lots of interest from people across the peninsula. What’s more, we learn that as well as working with local farmers, particularly those who farm organically, Wildlife Groundswell is in constant conversation with the partners of fellow Lizard organisation, Linking the Lizard, which include the National Trust, Natural England, Cornwall AONB, and Cornwall Wildlife Trust, among others. Linking the Lizard is a group of organisations that are interested in the same aims of Wildlife Groundswell, that is, how to support the Lizard’s wildlife. “We offer the chance for communities and individuals on the Lizard to become involved,” continues Sandy. “If we can work together to support what we are all trying to achieve, we’ll be much more effective than small-scale individual activities.” So what advice would Sandy give to locals who want to get involved, but who perhaps don’t have lots of land to work with? “Anyone who has access to a bit of earth, whether this is a plant pot, a garden, or five acres of land, can do something,” she reveals. “You don’t need to own acres of land, as anything that encourages insects and wildlife is helpful, even if you only have a small back garden. Our aim, is to make it as easy as possible.”

Some of the things we can all do include mowing less frequently and allowing buttercups, daisies, dandelions and clovers to flower, even in just a small area. Avoiding pesticides and artificial fertilisers is another, as is leaving a small area of your garden to do its own thing – to ‘re-wild’ itself. You could also build a log pile or prunings pile for wildlife and bugs to inhabit, and if you have room, why not plant a fruit tree? Even one in a pot is okay – it’s free food, not just for the wildlife, but for you as well! Allowing nettles, ivy or holly to grow is great for butterflies and moths turn to page 42 to read more about the species found on the Lizard), and if you have the space, making a small pond provides drinking water for birds and insects, and a home for many other bugs. Even an upturned bin lid sunk into the ground will do the trick!

07/04/2021 16:23

LIFESTYLE

For larger garden visitors such as hedgehogs, you could make a hole or passage in your fence to serve as a wildlife corridor. Onto the actual machinery you use to maintain your garden, and Sandy recommends trying to garden manually wherever possible. This, she explains, is much more precise and has the added benefit of zero carbon emissions. If you’re planting, then it’s worth taking time to research the most insect/bug-friendly plants, as is making your own compost. If you don't have the space for a bin then buy locally made compost ask the Council recycling depot). If they can't supply then buy peat free – peat bogs are an endangered habitat for rare species and large quantities of CO2 are released when they are dug up. If the peat is from abroad, then even more carbon has been produced getting it here. Next is to make sure you include a seat somewhere in your garden, so that you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour, and after that, spread the word! The more of your friends and family that you can inspire to follow your lead, the more freedom our wildlife will have to roam, survive and thrive. And ultimately, in a world where more and more of our wild spaces are being encroached upon every day, welcoming creatures great and small to make themselves at home in our own back gardens, is surely something we can all get on board with.

ABOVE You'll be amazed at the variety of creatures that even a small patch can support  LEFT Without our pollinators, we would be without food!

Cornwall has a big plan for the next ten years: we aim to be carbon neutral by 2030!

T

his goal is by no means an easy achievement, but if you love the beaches, the cliffs, the coves, the blue seas, the pure air, the bird life, and the beautiful countryside here in the Duchy, then you can help. Why? So that it’s just as great next time you visit! Now for the technical bit… The blanket of gases around the earth is getting thicker and trapping in more heat, just like a duvet. This is our fault; with industrialisation, we’ve burnt too much fossil fuel. The polar ice is melting fast, which is a ‘double whammy’. White ice reflects sunlight and dark sea absorbs it, so the more the ice melts, the more the sea warms – a vicious circle. This brings us to climate change – caused by more heat, water and energy in the whole system. Melted ice (fresh water) floats on top of salty sea water and affects the way the oceans purify the air. So, the sea – which usually absorbs and stores carbon dioxide (known as a CO2 sink) – is now acidifying and all of this tampers with

the earth’s weather systems. Similarly, trees also absorb CO2, but as a species we have chopped down uncountable numbers in the past 200 years, which further contributes to the problem. Add to all of this the plastic rubbish thrown out by us, which collects in huge islands in the oceans, and the situation becomes even worse – a ‘triple whammy’, you might say! The good news is that it’s not too late, and we can make a difference – every single one of us. If you would like to help, here are a few ideas of how you can do it. Firstly, use cafés and pubs that use mainly local and seasonal foods. It will often say ‘local’ on the menu, but if not, just ask the staff when you order. You can also buy local crafts and local foods as presents for your friends and relatives back home, rather than souvenirs imported from across the globe. Choose foods with less packaging, or with paper or cardboard packaging refill your plastic water bottles with the help of the Refill app (lookout for the blue droplet sign on shop windows); you can even buy milk in

refillable glass bottles a trip down memory lane for many of us! Whilst you’re staying on the Lizard, another thing you can do – which is really quite easy – is to stay local. The Lizard has to be one of the most beautiful parts of Cornwall, with footpaths, cycle trails and acres of beauty spots full of natural life, many of which lie far from the madding crowd. Check out southwestcoastpath. co.uk for walks, and you’ll find plenty of great walking books in the local village stores, post o ces, gift shops and caf s. Next, and this is an obvious one that applies during your holiday and back home, is to switch things off. This includes lights, televisions, mobile phones and tablets once they’ve charged. If each one of us does this, added up it will make a massive difference, and will even save you money on your electric bill. That’s a win-win! Of course, a holiday on the Lizard wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the beach, or a stroll in the countryside, after all, it’s why most people come here! It makes sense, then, to respect, protect and enjoy them. Put any litter in a bin and when you can, recycle it. Unfortunately, if litter on the beach isn’t cleaned up, it will inevitably wash out to sea again with the next tide, causing untold damage to marine life. Why not do a mini beach clean (keep a plastic glove in your pocket, or use a dog-poo bag as a ‘glove’) and pop it in the waste bin? You could have a competition to see who can find the most colourful or interesting pieces of plastic flotsam before you bin it. If you like, you can even make arts and crafts from the pieces you pick up – another win-win! If you find yourselves bored on a rainy day (unfortunately, it does happen from time to time here by the sea!), then why not check out a new clip on YouTube titled 'Cornwall Climate Stories – under the surface', which shows the effects of climate change on Cornwall's marine life. You could also

DID YOU KNOW? According to the first global scientific review, more than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered. Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates a 30% rise in carbon dioxide levels in the ocean. According to BP, in 2018, renewable power consumption grew by 14%, still only providing 9% of the world's energy.

review your carbon footprint at wwf.org. uk, or take a look at energysavingtrust. com where you’ll find advice on how you can save energy and contribute to the fight against climate change in your own home. Alternatively, why not sign up to climateemergencydeclaration.org and find out what you can do to help? Unfortunately, holidays cannot last forever, but that doesn’t mean that when you get home you can’t continue to ‘do your bit’. Once we get past the horrors of Coronavirus, if you drive to work, how about checking out liftshare.com, which will save you money on fuel and help the planet. Yet another win-win! You could also take a look in your garden and perhaps make a small patch ‘insect friendly’. For help in doing so, look up the Bee Kind app. Alternatively, why not build a shallow pond? Just a scrape of earth will do – no need to roll in the diggers or spend lots of money! For inspiration, visit buglife.org.uk, rspb.org.uk, or look up Froglife’s Wildlife

Pond Visualiser app. With just a little bit of effort, you can turn your garden into a sanctuary where insects and other creatures will thrive. Insects are the basis of our food chain; in fact, without pollinators, we would be without food! Other things you can do include planting a tree, even just a little one, or a few if you have space. The more the merrier – they all soak up carbon dioxide. You could also plan to reduce buying things that you don’t really need. This, of course, is a tricky one, but it’s one worth thinking about, be it food, clothes, cosmetics, or gadgets that we ‘must have’ because the neighbour has one. The list is long, and when you get down to it, you might be surprised about the items you don’t really need. The key is to be honest with yourself: is your last ‘must have’ purchase sat in the back of a cupboard somewhere? When enthusing about your fabulous Cornish holiday to your friends back home, remember to tell them about all the good

green things you are doing and have in the pipeline. We all want the Lizard to be as fabulous as it is now in 20 years’ time, but to make sure this happens, it really needs you on board. A small ripple really does make a big wave, and in the words of Paul McCartney’s Frog Song: ‘Win or lose, sink or swim. One thing is certain, we’ll never give in. Side by side, hand in hand, we’ll all stand together…’

NURTURE BY NATURE

Over the course of the pandemic, not only has Kernow Adventure Park’s Aquapark expanded, so too have its outdoor facilities.

D

espite the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic, Kernow Adventure Park have nevertheless adapted. Working hard over the winter season, the team have been busy laying turf, concreting, and prepping for the season ahead, creating new outdoor areas for spectators, and picnic spots for participants to enjoy after their session. They have also increased the size of the Aquapark, which is now bigger and better than ever before! Putting risks into consideration, Alex and co have now built a beach-like effect for customers to walk in and out of the water, instead of using a dock. This is for the customers who aren’t as confident to jump in, allowing them to get used to the temperature of the water. “Our approach to outdoor adventure has changed,” explains Alex, “as we are accommodating for all ages and all abilities. This means we’ve had to adapt, as those not as strong or new to the water, we’ve had to reassure and help them feel as comfortable and safe as they can. We want people to feel reconnected with nature, and be able to enjoy the adventurous side. It’s all about making sure customers feel fulfilled, and leave with their expectations met. “Our vision is to create an enjoyable, but safe surrounding here at the park,” Alex continues, “making sure that not only are our in-session customers enjoying themselves, but also spectators. Here at Kernow Adventure Park we have adapted to

this different lifestyle, and have created new rules and restrictions for people to still enjoy themselves. We’ve put in place a rule of six on the Aquapark, and made sure everyone is sticking to social distancing measures. With these new rules,” says Alex, “our customers have felt safe, but also enjoy themselves!” Activities here can be enjoyed from the age of six. This includes paddle boarding around the tranquil lake, jumping into the water off the Aquapark, riding a wakeboard around the quarry, or feeling the adrenaline on the Ringo. These activities are for everyone, from total beginners, to experts, and Alex and the team offer coaching and a brief before each session. At Kernow Adventure park, the team works hard to make sure customers understand the rules, so everyone can enjoy the activities. On arrival, you feel welcomed and relaxed, due in part to the beautiful landscape, but also the approachability of the team. And when the day comes to an end, Alex explains: “Customers always leave with a smile on their face.” Along with his team, Alex goes above and beyond to make sure everybody enjoys their time at Kernow Adventure Park, ensuring their expectations are reached to the highest level.

A banner YEAR

Despite the struggles we have all faced over the past year, Julie Oats and the team at The Grey Lurcher in Falmouth have remained incredibly busy.

S

howcasing a carefully curated selection of contemporary gifts and homewares, if you're planning a day's retail therapy away from the Lizard, the Grey Lurcher in Falmouth also stocks a variety of cards, gift wrap and French soaps, along with a selection of shaving products. It has proven a big hit among new and returning customers alike; so much so, that despite the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the past year has been a momentous one The Grey Lurcher. “Returning from the fi rst lockdown,” explains Julie, who owns the store, “an amazing opportunity presented itself. A property that we had always loved had become vacant on the High Street; number 20 was up for rent and as our lease was about to end, we went for it. After establishing ourselves on the street, the new shop would enable us to move to a more prominent position.” Of course, moving in the height of summer was something of a leap of faith. Nevertheless, Julie and co spent a couple of weeks renovating in preparation for the big move. “Paint brushes were the order of the day,” laughs ulie, who explains that within a couple of weeks, the new premises was re-decorated and ready for stock to be moved in. “We moved in August and we haven’t looked back since, and interestingly,” she continues, “because we

were in the same shop that had stocked Annie Sloan paint many years ago, our paint sales went up.” But it’s not just a new move that kept The Grey Lurcher team busy during 2020. Locked down again in November, they decided to open a pop-up shop at The Old Market in Chacewater – an amazing food and plant market, right in the middle of the village. “That worked so well that it has now become one of our permanent outlets,” says Julie. “We are open daily in the market, and happy to drop any products from the Falmouth shop there for you to collect.” Keen to keep up their momentum, the team’s outlook for the year ahead looks as busy as the year just gone. As Julie says: “We haven’t been resting on our laurels during this latest lockdown either, and the spring will see the launch of our brand-new website ” This means you’ll be able to access the wonderful array of products that are currently only available in store. To make sure you’re among the fi rst to hear about its launch, be sure to follow The Grey Lurcher on social media.

roducing two to three plays a year at week illage hall the week layers is a theatre group based on the Lizard with more than members and supporters. The group normally plays to sell-out audiences and is known and loved for taking on both classic favourites such as Pygmalion, On Golden Pond and Private Lives and exciting new plays such as Harvey and Habeus Corpus. As with many live performances up and down the country, the Coronavirus pandemic has put paid to the week layers usual calendar of live events. etermined not to sit idly by, and missing the camaraderie of their fellow actors, after a chance conversation between Mandy Rolleston the roducer and Aline Turner, the Chair, the group recently undertook a remote oom production of The Village Hall Murder. Aline enthuses: “It was week layers’ very talented mma hillips a technical whizz kid who agreed to direct and edit.” Another member, avid Ivall, agreed to write a murder mystery play that would

be suitable for remote filming under lockdown conditions. “He had written Pirates of Trebah for us a few years ago,” explains Aline, “so we knew and loved his style. ne of our very loyal followers, Mike reen, wrote and performed the special atmospheric and moody original score for us.” Interested to know more about how it all worked, we ask whether it was a format that will still be popular once government restrictions ease. “Stuck at home with little to do it is not surprising that people have found a new way to communicate,” says Aline. “ ust over a year ago few of us had ever heard of oom and now it’s a word in everyday use. “Whilst rehearsals over oom were a lot of fun and a great success,” continues Aline, “it soon became obvious that the uality achieved by actually recording by oom was greatly affected by the limitations on internal microphones and cameras.”

Instead, the group decided that recording the footage on i ads, cameras and i hones would achieve a better uality production. With each actor recording entirely in isolation, this resulted in careful planning and a massive amount of editing for irector, mma. Aline elaborates: “It can never be a substitute for the real thing, live on stage, but it has been a fun and fulfilling project during lockdown. Along the way, with our steep learning curve, we have discovered many positives and negatives in performing this way but ultimately we want our productions to be live on stage that is what we are all about. There were a total of people involved in the production of The Village Hall Murder, Aline reveals. “The actors, of course, but also mma hillips the irector, Mandy Rolleston the roducer, and our creatives helping with advice on set and costume. Many partners or bubble pals were roped in to do the filming too. “The hardest job of course was editing the many pieces of film, including the interspersing of the wonderful footage of local scenery which was filmed by mma.” Logistically then, it’s clear that pulling a production like this together is no small task, so we ask Aline how the sets, props and costumes were sourced and arranged. She says: “Most of the costumes and props were sourced by the actors themselves. We did of course hold creative meetings as we would for a stage production and if someone needed for example religious books, a yellow raincoat or a blue flashing light and did not have one, then the creatives team would arrange to post one, or for another actor to drop off only if genuinely passing by on an essential trip , with all items being sanitised or uarantined before posting or delivery.” When it came to rehearsals as well as practising on their own, the group was able to discuss on oom the characterisation and intonation, head movements, line of sight and other aspects of their role, just as in a normal on-stage rehearsal. mma and Mandy cleverly made use of oom ‘break out’ rooms so that multiple scenes could be rehearsed simultaneously while they moved from room to room to review and advise. “There was even a oom coffee break for our normal social chat half way through rehearsals,” says Aline. “We had to provide our own cake and biscuits, though The actors then made test films which were sent to mma and Mandy for review. Before the final filming took place, Mandy hosted a film workshop by oom and a second one on lighting a real revelation, according to Aline , to bring everyone up to speed, including their bubble pals and partners who were all roped in to help. “We could not have achieved it without them all,” Aline reveals. “When mma received the final recordings, she then spent hours editing them.

The process was very detailed and time consuming, but we are so thrilled and grateful to her to see the final results.” As restrictions look set to ease we are all looking forward to a time when we can once again go out and watch our favourite productions live. After all, nothing uite compares to the real thing The best way you can support groups like the week layers is to come out and see live theatre again once Covid restrictions allow. As Aline puts it: “Audiences are our oxygen and life blood.” At the time of going to press week layers’ fabulous production The Village Hall Murder has had , clicks and rising, with lots of messages of congratulations continuing to flow in. “If anything is going to excite and motivate groups like ours,” finishes Aline, “it is the positive response of our audiences, whether for an on stage production or this new foray into a ouTube production. So, be sure to go to gweekplayers.co.uk and click the ouTube link on the home page to watch their performance for free. estle Barton is an ideal destination for a family day out, or a blissful week of self-catering luxury amidst the tranquil, natural scenery of farmlands, sea coves and Daphne Du Maurier’s well-loved Frenchman’s Creek. Following an award-winning conservation and conversion project the beautiful old farm buildings were given a new lease of life in 2010, including an elegant gallery and adjoining garden landscaped by James Alexander Sinclair, with a wild flower meadow just beyond. First, let’s take a look inside the gallery. Kestle Barton: Rural Centre of Contemporary Arts, offers a programme of free exhibitions and a number of other events open to visitors each year, from early April to late October. Muddy boots and dogs on leads are always welcome. This season starts with a painting exhibition in the gallery by local artist, Ben Sanderson: Green at an angle (12th April to 13th June) – a body of works on canvas based on a residency at Trebah Garden. It is followed by another painting exhibition, featuring work by the late Jeffery Camp RA, titled Some People Dream A Lot (19th June to 5th September). This is later followed in the autumn with new film works by St Ives artist, Naomi Frears, from 11th September to 30th October.

Every approach to Kestle Barton is an adventure and adds to a magical day out; arrive by car, or by the foot ferry from Helford Passage and take a gentle stroll through Helford village and ancient woodland to find this oasis of peace and creativity. For those looking for the perfect Lizard retreat, at Kestle Barton there are three beautifully converted ancient barns, a lovely old Farmhouse, and an adjacent cottage, which are let on a weekly basis throughout the year based on two, four, six and eightperson occupancy. s n o i s s Pa PURSUED

Established artists Simon and Rebecca Jewell, live and work on the beautiful Lizard peninsula from their studios at home in the village of Mawgan.

S

ince getting married in 2001 they have pursued their passion for all things artistic. Working together gives them the opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and support each other in the work they do, helping one another to gain inspiration. Simon has always taken an interest in extreme weather which, he tells us, has become a real passion: “There is nowhere to run and hide down here so you just need to embrace the elements!” he says. “My work focuses on the untamed seas and the large open spaces of Goonhilly Downs,” continues Simon, who works in oils on large canvases building up layers of paint to give a real textural feel to emulate the ruggedness of the south west coast line. This year, he has been given an incredible opportunity to hold an exhibition in New Zealand, as well as solo exhibitions closer to home. Rebecca, meanwhile, paints contemporary botanical pieces, from large scale to small detailed works. “An important part of the process is to grow, pick and photograph the flowers I use in my work in order to capture the unique forms created by nature,” she reveals. “Spring into summer is always so exciting waiting to see what will emerge. very flower has its own personality from big blousy peonies, the intricate structure of a dahlia or the elegance of a rose.” Placing the flowers against dark backgrounds really makes them pop, but also using light backgrounds gives a sense of fresh air and calm, and as you look at one of Rebecca’s pieces, you can’t help feel as if you could reach out and pick the petals. Due to the pandemic, life for us all has changed considerably. That said, Simon tells us: “We are lucky to continue doing what we love. There will be no Open Studios in 2021 but we always welcome people to our studio by appointment.” They also welcome commissions and relish the challenge to create a bespoke work of art, so if you would like to discuss that special piece or find out about future exhibitions, be sure to give Rebecca and Simon of Jewell Arts a call.

KNOW YOUR

HISTORY! Extensive collections reveal a fascinating insight into times gone by, at Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life.

I

f you’re staying near Helston, you’re well set to discover the best that Cornwall has to offer. Indeed, just a short scoot up the coast, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping floor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order, town history, home

life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening, transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you’re staying in or near Helston and hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life comes highly recommended.

t the heart of the Lizard peninsula, on the road to St. Keverne, lies the timeless Trelowarren Estate, just a few miles from the tree-lined Helford river. As you drive through the woodland you finally reach the collection of old buildings and ancient walls. The gallery that has been home to Lizard Art since , is situated amongst the old converted stable barns, which also house a restaurant and a pantry selling coffee, lunches and afternoon tea a perfect location for a sunny afternoon escape. Lizard Art is a group of professional artists, some whom are members of the ewlyn Art Society and enwith associates, Royal hotographic Society, and the Royal West of ngland Academy, with many who teach throughout the south west; a high-quality mix with long-established members and exciting new ones. The group all work in various media and styles, from exciting seascapes that capture stormy weather to gentle water colours that capture the warmth of summer. ou’ll also find woodcuts and cyanotypes, picking out nature’s details, as well as jewellery, sculptures, textiles and abstracts which evoke the artists’ feeling of privilege to experience the ever-changing weather and history of the Lizard. ew to the shelves is the group’s new illustrated book, titled Lizard Uncovered, which features a compilation of words and images from each of the current members a real personal insight into the artists’ work and influences, a perfect gift for fellow creatives.

The gallery has tastes and prices to suit everybody, including collections of originals, prints and cards, and it’s manned by the artists themselves, which gives them the opportunity to share their enthusiasm about their own work and those of their colleagues, a real highlight for visitors keen to know more. But don’t just take our word for it ne recent visitor explains how the “amazing gallery” was “well worth the drive off the beaten track through the timeless Trelowarren Estate.” They continue: “The gallery has a very high standard of paintings, prints and cards to suit all tastes and pockets, and you will receive a very warm welcome.” isitors are welcome to buy or browse in the spacious gallery, which displays three seasonal exhibitions a year, plus a new special exhibition in ovember, which will showcase how the Lizard landscape has influenced and shaped the artists’ work. pen five days a week, from Wednesday to Sunday, am to pm, we highly recommended penciling a visit into your calendar.

ilver dollars, shipwrecks and scenic views; this stunning but short coastal walk near Gunwalloe, is a must for families hoping to while away a sunny afternoon. This one-mile route along the rugged Lizard coastline offers sensational views across Mount’s Bay to the Penwith Moors, and inland over Gunwalloe Marsh, a wildlife site of national importance. It’s also dog friendly, so your four-legged friend needn’t miss out on your day’s adventure! The walk begins at the National Trust car park next to Winnianton Farm, which was one of the largest, most important Dark Age settlements in Cornwall. According to the National Trust website, in 1086, the Royal Manor here owned more land than any other manor in Cornwall or Devon. Once a very important place, locals would come here to pay their taxes to the king, and for many years, local residents and archaeologists have seen archaeological features eroding out of the cliff. Dating between 600 and 900 AD, only one other settlement of this date has been excavated in Cornwall.

From the car park, turn left along the road, before climbing the stile opposite the farm entrance, onto the coast path. Here, you can look over Dollar Cove, which takes its name from the cargo of silver dollars from the ship San Salvador, which sank in 1669. Heading north up the slope and away from the beach, follow the coast path running inside the fence. Keep an eye out for sand martins overhead, which nest in the eroding cliffs on your left. Be sure to keep an eye out for Gunwalloe Marsh too, which runs within the valley of Gunwalloe, along the back of Dollar and Church Cove; this reedbed is one of Cornwall’s largest and an extremely important habitat for birds. Among others, you may be lucky enough to spot breeding species including the rare Cetti's warbler. Other birds use the reedbed as feeding grounds, particularly during the spring and autumn migration, when species like the swallow and house martin congregate to feed on airborne invertebrates.

Next, walk through the stile and continue up the slope, where the path widens as you meet the fields stretching across Halzephron Head. From here, continue up the path, around the headland, and then take a moment to look back at ollar Cove. Behind the farm buildings you can see Gunwalloe Marsh stretching inland. As you turn your back on that fabulous view and continue onwards, you’ll be glad you did, as spectacular views now open up across Mount’s Bay towards Loe Bar, orthleven and St Michael’s Mount, with the moors of enwith rising in the distance. Cornish choughs visit the flower-rich cliffs beneath you to feed, and you may even be lucky enough to spot a passing kestrel, raven, or a peregrine falcon, all of which patrol this wild coastline. Further along the coast path you’ll eventually reach a small car park next to the main unwalloe road. Here, you can choose to return to the main National Trust car park where you began via the road, or re-trace your steps to ollar Cove on the coast path. When you get back, there’s the option of a short, additional route too!

The Church of Winwalloe shelters behind a huge pre-historic cliff castle, and was originally established in the 6th century by a Breton saint of the same name. The buildings visible today were built in the 13th century, with a distinct separate bell tower in the cliff itself. The beach here, aptly named Church Cove, nestles to the side of the church. With a stream running through the sand and plenty of room for little ones to roam, if you thought ahead and packed a picnic, this is the perfect place to enjoy it.

A MONUMENTAL Ensuring that our most precious sites of archaeological interest are preserved for generations to come.

n January 2020, the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) launched the Monumental Improvement project, an initiative to help stabilise 40 scheduled monuments across 10 of the 12 AONB sections, which are listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register or classified as vulnerable. This ambitious project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, Cornwall Council, the National Trust, and the Cornwall Heritage Trust, aims to tackle the current limited understanding of scheduled monuments in Cornwall as sites of national archaeological significance. The 40 sites span over 4,000 years of Cornish history, with some scheduled monuments predating the pyramids. Iron Age hill forts and Neolithic settlements feature alongside Medieval motte and bailey castles, whilst some sites have iconic associations with the writer Daphne Du Maurier, composer Richard Wagner and the legendary King Arthur, making them unrivalled for their national uni ueness. The project is currently working to identify a programme of work needed to help stabilise the monuments. Working closely with the Cornwall Archaeological

Unit, the team are evaluating the condition, threats and vulnerabilities at each site in order to gain a better understanding of their function and develop a long-term management plan. The project is also undertaking an ecological appraisal which will help inform future works by advising on the biodiversity at each monument.

This sits alongside the Cornwall AONB's wider objective to understand more about the state of biodiversity in its 12 sections, helping to inform future management plans for the conservation, restoration and enhancement of the landscape. The long term goal of the Monumental Improvement project is to equip local communities with the skills and knowledge to manage and maintain the monuments, so it is hoped that the archaeological management plans and ecological appraisal will provide a vital framework for this. If successful in the next round of funding, across the lifespan of the project there will also be increased physical, sensory and intellectual access to the sites, and the production of interpretation as part of an outreach and visitor information programme. Cornwall is an international visitor destination, and through the wider promotion of these scheduled monument, sites it is hoped that visitors will benefit from a new, fresh perspective of the county. Monumental Improvement is striving to develop links with local communities and create new partnerships, providing opportunities for volunteers to be an integral part of a regular programme of maintenance

W DID YOU KNOW? The Cornwall Butterfly and Moth Society sponsors scientific research at Exeter University in Cornwall to study butterflies and moths. It also gives help to Cornish landowners to enable them to improve their lands for the benefit of our wildlife, and even gives grants and donations to other charities.

DISCOVER MORE How can you help? To help protect the habitats that support these beautiful creatures, Keith suggests planting native wildflowers in gardens and fields. “Nettles, sorrel, violets, scabious and many grasses are all eaten by the different species of local butterflies and moths. For tree-dwelling species, you could plant oak, elm, hop and alder buckthorn."

ith its unique range of landscapes, including heathland, coastal and woodland, the Lizard supports an abundance of wildflowers and other plants that are loved by butterflies and moths. We ask Keith Wilson of Cornwall Butterfly and Moth Society, to tell us more about the myriad species that call the Lizard home. He begins by saying that the word ‘home’ is perhaps the wrong term. The Red Admiral, for instance, is one of the most common butterflies during the summer, and yet it is, in fact, a migrant that flies here from abroad. “Some years we get many migrant butterflies and moths,” he says, but explains that even when they are sighted and recorded, “we don’t truly know where they were born.” So, if it’s not home, what is it about the Lizard that attracts these majestic creatures? “Species which are known to breed in west Cornwall, such as the Brimstone and Silverwashed Fritillary, travel long distances and probably breed on the Lizard,” Keith continues. “The Lizard also attracts many migrants and this may simply be due to it being a peninsula. They may just stop at the sea and accumulate in the coastal areas. Those butterflies and moths which don’t travel far may benefit from the excellent climate of the Lizard and the variety of habitats will suit a variety of insects. “The Lizard is a wonderful place for humans to live and visit,” Keith continues,

but reveals that the reality is that “butterflies and moths may simply be looking for the ideal climate and suitable plants to eat.” If you’re out and about exploring the Lizard during the warmer months, you need only walk a little slower and keep your eyes open, and chances are you’ll spot a variety of different species, including the aforementioned Red Admiral, Brimstone and Silver-washed Fritillary. To give yourselves the best chance of spotting them, Keith suggests striking out on the coast path, which is rich in wild flowers and enjoys a sunny climate, therefore supporting large numbers of these wonderful creatures. Better still, why not sign up to Cornwall Butterfly and Moth Society? With no fees and a friendly welcome for all, Keith explains: “We have a very simple approach to membership: companionship, fresh air and exercise, interesting wildlife talks and the opportunity to help our butterflies, moths and other wildlife to survive.”

David Roberts, Master Instructor at Kennack Diving, discusses his experiences of the wonderful world beneath the waves of the Lizard.

A

according to Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the Duchy is home to some of the richest marine wildlife in the UK, from tiny rare colourful corals, to megafauna including dolphins and basking sharks. The coastline of the Lizard is no exception, in fact, having dived there for more than 25 years and completed more than 5,000 dives, David Roberts, Master Instructor at Kennack Diving, says: “I can honestly say that the marine life on our doorstep is truly world class.

“It is colourful, surprising, spectacular and incredibly diverse. From the smallest, fascinating, vibrantly coloured Nudibranchs [a group of marine molluscs], all the way up to some of the ocean’s giants, like seals, dolphins, whales and basking sharks, the world beneath the waves is full of wonder. “I have had so many amazing encounters with playful seals, diving cormorants and gannets, and huge, endless and shimmering shoals of mackerel, bass and sand eels,” David continues, “but some of the most memorable

encounters have been with Cephalopods octopus, s uid and cuttlefish . ou can hover just above the sea bed and watch them change colour, shape and texture right in front of you, and all the time they’re studying you with their amazing, knowing eyes.” The waters surrounding the Lizard are dotted with countless reefs and hidden coves that provide the perfect conditions for myriad species to thrive. That said, with so many hidden dangers lying just beneath the surface, thousands of mariners have been tragically wrecked around the Lizard peninsula, and in fact, many consider the Lizard to be the biggest trap for vessels in British waters. What’s more, given the peninsula’s geographical location – jutting into the channel to welcome seafarers to England – it has also seen its share of wartime casualties. From a diver’s perspective, these wrecks provide fascinating sites for exploration, and David recalls “one dive in particular that I will never forget”. “It was on a dive out of the fishing port of Cadgwith, diving on a World War One wreck called the Bellucia, which was torpedoed and sank in July 1917. As we were diving around the boilers, we were suddenly visited by a

bottlenose dolphin. It proceeded to swoop and swim around us and our bubbles, and over the coming minutes we saw it catch and devour a large pollack. During our safety stop at the dive’s end, it even playfully nibbled my fins To complete a truly magical day, the dolphin then swam alongside us all the way back to Cadgwith, riding the bow wave of the boat.” These stories are far more common than you might think, and there are lots of ways in which to appreciate the Lizard’s magical marine life for yourself. The obvious way, is to book in with Kennack iving a five-star dive resort run by David. With a full range of PADI courses, from beginner all the way up to assistant instructor, plus guided dives, air fills and equipment hire, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve dived before or not; with David’s help, you can immerse yourself in the Lizard’s world beneath the waves and experience the life there for yourself. For beginners, Kennack Diving offers introductory ‘taster’ sessions in the pool, and even trial dives in the sea. But diving isn’t for everybody. Instead, why not grab a snorkel and explore the Lizard’s hidden coves from the surface? On the right day, you’ll be amazed at the sheer clarity of the water and just how much you can

see – not to mention the variety of colourful creatures there are swimming beneath you. Alternatively, you could always hire a kayak. This is another great way to explore the waterways surrounding the Lizard, and it has the added benefit of keeping you dry for the most part, anyway If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, then exploring the rockpools that line the shores of the peninsula is a sure-fire way to found any number of marine dwelling creatures, and it’s one that the kids will absolutely love. Another way is to simply keep a pair of binoculars handy. “Whilst walking the coast path,” David explains, “it’s always worth taking time to stop and take a look through binoculars, if you can. If you’re lucky, you will hopefully see seals, dolphins, porpoises, whales, and even leaping blue-fin tuna ” His top tip is to look out for diving sea birds, especially gannets, as they’ll usually be attacking bait balls, which means that other predators are sure to be around. Ultimately, however you choose to experience the Lizard’s amazing flora and fauna, it deserves our respect. After all, we all want to be able to continue enjoying it for years to come, and the simplest way to help ensure that happens, as David says, is to “look but don’t touch”. Taking your litter home with you is also crucial, and why not keep a bag in your pocket so that you can take home any small pieces of plastic or rubbish that you find on the beach? To find out more about how you can help respect and protect the Lizard and ensure it remains its beautiful self for generations to come, turn to page 17.

BEAUTY AND THE BEACH

Lazy days with sandy toes or adventure hikes and crashing waves on the Lizard peninsula.

T

he Lizard peninsula is home to a number of alluring havens and beautiful beaches, so we have decided to share our pick of the best so that you too can enjoy them. Kynance Cove is on the eastern side of Mount's Bay and has been showcased nationally as a jewel in Cornwall’s crown. You can swim at low tide in clear azure waters, head to a secret bay opposite Asparagus Island, and discover rock pools and caves. It is very easy to run out of superlatives when describing Kynance, but it must be said that timing is crucial when planning a visit to this incredible beach. Time your adventure in conjunction with low water, where there will be a lot more sea shore for visitors to enjoy, as high tide at Kynance makes it almost impossible to spend any time on the golden sands. With an ecofriendly café nearby, Kynance has been dubbed Britain's best beach by many and it is not hard to understand why. A beach which is accessible at both low and high water, Kennack Sands lies on the

east coast of the Lizard peninsula. There is a rocky outcrop that splits the beach almost in two (east and west) and low tide provides ample room for those classic beach games. The rock that splits the beach is called the Caerverracks and the hill above is Carn Kennack, with a path up and over Carn Kennack allowing access to the east beach. This area is a designated nature reserve, perfect for wildlife lovers and the ideal coastline for walkers. Popular with families, this beach is also an excellent surf beach and at night can provide good fishing. Lankidden Cove is not a beach that many will have visited. The little cove can be found a good mile along the stunning coast path from Kennack Sands and is not the easiest to reach, purely due to the sheer footpath down, but we assure you that every single step is worth the effort when you get that first glimpse of tur uoise water, white sand and imposing, jagged coastline. Swimming at Lankidden is possible, although with no lifeguard we urge you to take extreme care. We are told that the

snorkelling here is sublime, rivalling the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean. The walk down however, can put many off, leaving a little more beach for those who endured the hike as a reward. Another favourite here at Cornwall Living is the hugely popular beach Poldhu Cove. With easy access and a car park just across the road, this sandy beach with emerald green water is just perfect for families. A westerly facing beach on the coast of Mount’s Bay, these sands are also popular with the surfing community making it perfect for those looking to dip their toes into the sport. There is a café on the beach (poldhu.yolasite.com) which offers snacks and drinks which is peace of mind for families with young children. Close to the beach, upon the cliff top, is a site of historical interest, where a huge technological advancement took place in 1901, when Thomas Barron sent a wireless transatlantic signal from Poldhu Wireless Station, to St. John’s in Newfoundland, which was received by Guglielmo Marconi.

For the explorers in the family, Dollar Cove is a must visit. Named after a 17th century Spanish ship wreck, alleged to have been carrying silver dollar coins, this beach is steeped in folklore and archaeology. A pebbly beach giving way to clean sand, if you head down after a storm, keep your eyes fixed to the sand as you may find something shiny Gunwalloe Church Cove has easy access, a large car park and sits outside the shelter of Mount's Bay, exposing it to the Atlantic swells and allowing for surfing and kayaking. The church here was known as the 'Church of the Storms'. With plenty of surf running through, swimming can be a little trickier here, and although a lifeguard service is operational during the summer, caution should still be taken whilst bathing. A freshwater stream running through the beach is just perfect for paddling with little ones.

IN SAFE

hands

Less than ten minutes from Helston in the sleepy Cornish village of Breage, you’ll find Happy Dogs Day Care and Boarding.

W

hether you live down here and have a busy working schedule, or are holidaying here on the Lizard and unable to take your dog to particular ‘human only’ attractions, it can be di cult knowing what to do. What’s more, the thought of leaving man’s best friend at a kennel for the day whilst you’re out having the best of times can often be too much to bear. This is where Happy ogs ay Care and Boarding comes in. Founded by ackie Warden, Happy ogs has nurtured a sterling reputation among locals and holidaymakers alike who want to ensure that their furry friends are placed in the ultimate Cornish canine care. It could be that you're taking a day trip, or that you're off on holiday and need a boarding service to take care of your favourite pooch. Whichever it is, ackie does it all, taking her four-legged guests on multiple walks every day, throughout the year. In fact, whether it’s down to Longrock beach looking out to St Michael’s Mount, or in the fields and meadows surrounding Breage, it’s a fair assumption that in Jackie’s care, your hound will be having a more adventurous time than you!

“The thing I love about my job is watching the dogs interact and socialise,” Jackie explains. “Their relationships change and develop I have a steady stream of regular dogs that come in for day care, as well as boarders whose owners go away. The regular guests soon become fast friends and now, when they arrive in the mornings and see their mates, they’re always really excited!” For Jackie, building relationships with animals is not only a passion, but second nature, something in which regular clients have found themselves able to place their trust. It seems that no matter how weird, whacky, excitable or calm her waggy-tailed guests are, the way in which she interacts with the many and varied characters in her care never fails to bring out the best in man’s best friend.
