The historic stone mansion, which was built in four stages and completed in 1811, was the birthplace of Samuel Haldeman, who became a prominent and respected scientist and scholar largely through self-study and made significant contributions in the fields of zoology and linguistics, according to www.explorepahistory.org. Samuel was the eldest of nine siblings. His younger brother Horace served in the Mexican and Civil wars, and their younger brother Paris traveled west by wagon to the California Gold Rush. “SERVING THE AREA 46 YEARS R012480
While danger was gathering ’round New York, and its inhabitants were in mute suspense and fearful anticipations, the General Congress at Philadelphia was discussing, with closed doors, what John Adams pronounced, “The greatest question ever debated in America, and as great as ever was or will be debated among men. The result was a resolution passed unanimously on the Second of July - “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States. “The Second of July, adds the same patriot statesman, “will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to Almighty God. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forth forevermore. The glorious event has, indeed, given rise to an annual jubilee but not on the day designated by Adams. The Fourth of July is the day of national rejoicing, for on that day the “Declaration of Independence, that solemn and sublime document, was adopted. Tradition gives a dramatic effect to its announcement. It was known to be under discussion, but the closed doors of Congress excluded the populace. They awaited, in throngs, an appointed signal. In the steeple of the State House was a bell, imported twenty-three years previously from London by the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania. It bore the portentous text from Scripture: “Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof. A joyous peal from that bell gave notice that the bill had been passed. It was the knell of British domination. Yankee Doodle It’s one of the oldest popular songs around, dating back to 1500. Farmers sang it in Holland. An English version poked fun at one of England’s military leaders - Oliver Cromwell. The Italian version made light of the men’s clothing style of the day. When the British came to fight the Native Americans in the mid
1700s, the Colonists sent local forces to help. A professional British army surgeon took one look at the strange garb of the American forces and wrote a poem. The men from America seemed so untrained. They couldn’t resist poking some fun. The words had a rhyme to them, and with a little experimenting, British regulars were able to put the new words to that same old tune. But the Yanks liked it too. Americans, with the gift to laugh at themselves, started singing it, and soon the whole country was humming or whistling that simple tune. Then, when the Revolutionary War came, American soldiers made it their song by using it in the camps, on the march, and before going into battle. Written by the British as a joke, it became a song they regretted. One British General in the midst of war said, “I hope I never hear it again. But they did! In particular, they heard it at Yorktown during the surrender of the British army to General Washington. And, as the Americans played that one song “Yankee Doodle over and over, a defeated enemy stacked their arms. Advice from Ben Dr. Benjamin Franklin was not really a doctor; his title was one of those first honorariums given to a man of great achievement and reflects the impact he had on his age. Here are seven ways Benjamin Franklin would suggest you consider to be seen as one with a brain and a social wit. 1. Elevate, not desecrate. Never use cutting humor, dissect theirs. 2. Keep your humor light, fun, open to participation. 3. Reflect your humor to show you row your own boat. 4. You row merrily, and you attract others to you. 5. As you deflect bitterness, fear, answers appear. 6. Your summary encapsulates the situation and hints that the best way out may be to back up to where we went wrong, once we all clearly agree what that was. 7. Elevate, even exaggerate, achievement. Mock an obvious folly but with a twist. If attacked, return their volley as a mirror. Joke of the Week The Fourth of July weekend was approaching, and Miss Pelham, the nursery school teacher, took the opportunity to tell her class about patriotism. “We live in a great country, she announced. “One of the things we should be happy is that, in this country, we are all free. Trevor, who was a little boy in her class, came walking up to her from the back of the room. He stood with his hands on his hips and said loudly, “I’m not free. I’m four. Food for Thought “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him. -Abraham Lincoln Have a great week, everybody!

AHEDD has announced the appointment of Brandy F. Burnham to president of the private, nonprofit organization, which was founded in 1977 to meet the employment needs of people with disabilities and the business community. Burnham, who began her tenure on June 4, succeeds Rocco Cambria, who held the position since 1983 and was instrumental in founding the organization 41 years ago. Burnham was selected after a national search. A graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Harrisburg Area Community College, Burnham began her career as a support teacher and behavior specialist at Forbush School, where she taught in the areas of academics, vocational preparation, social skills, and behavior management. Her career path, which includes years of learning and case management support for students, youths, and adults with disabilities, led her to several positions with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry. For more than five years, she held the position of director of the Bureau of Workforce Development Administration.
Cambria’s official retirement date is slated for Friday, July 6. In addition to his 41-year career at AHEDD, Cambria has served on state policy planning committees and councils through which he has expanded services to people with disabilities in Pennsylvania. He has provided organizational consulting and technical assistance to organizations in five U.S. states and conducted statewide training workshops and seminars addressing topics of job readiness, development, placement, and training of individuals with disabilities. Prior to AHEDD, Cambria worked at the Pennsylvania ARC, directing the statewide On-The-Job Training program while coordinating training and employment activities. Based in Camp Hill, AHEDD strives to serve communities as a catalyst in the employment and development of people with disabilities. Additional information may be found at www.ahedd.org, http://twitter.com/AHEDDATWORK, www.facebook.com/AHEDDATWORK, and www.linkedin.com/company/ahedd/.
Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 veterans service commission members (from second from left) Bernard Weisser, Bob Nikolaus, Mitch Heim and Sue Zeamer, along with Doug Sigman (far left) from American Legion Post 372, announced that the Elks raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation included funds contributed by Post 372. The Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 has announced that it has raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation was the result of several fundraisers and donations from fellow fraternal organizations like the American Legion in Columbia, which contributed $2,000. The fundraiser was championed by the Columbia-Middletown 1074 Elks veterans service commission and Sue Zeamer, a veterans service commission member and ambassador for Mission 22. Three veterans started Mission
22 because of their personal battles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The organization provides information to veterans to help them heal from the effects of war, to families to help them provide support to their loved ones, and to communities to guide them on how to fight for veterans. To learn more about Mission 22, readers may visit www.mission 22.com or contact the Elks by searching for “Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074” on Facebook or calling 717-684-6851.

East Hanover Elementary School fifth-grader Herth Patel is the individual champion in Lower Dauphin’s annual 24 Challenge math competition. Herth was joined by four other top finishers to represent the district at a regional competition. Those students are Praveen Prabakar, a fourthgrader at South Hanover Elementary; Morgan Forrester, a fifth-grader at South Hanover Elementary; Victoria Irwin, a
fifth-grader at Conewago Elementary; and Max Cherny, a fifth-grader at Nye Elementary. In addition to individual honors, fourth- and fifth-graders compete for bragging rights for their schools. This year, Morgan Forrester, Rishi Reddy, Praveen Prabakar, Kayden Robitaille, and Rithvik Reddy won the trophy for South Hanover Elementary School. Nearly 70 fourth- and fifthgraders competed in the districtlevel competition, which is based on the 24 Game series of math games that challenge students to turn four numbers on a game card into the number 24.
Lower Dauphin School District students (from left) Herth Patel, Praveen Prabakar, Morgan Forrester, Victoria Irwin, and Max Cherny were the top five finishers in Lower Dauphin’s 24 Challenge math competition.
Pet Photo Contest Posted The 23rd annual pet photo contest will be held at the Elizabethtown Fair this year. All pets are eligible. Photographs should be dropped off at Waggin’ Wheels Pet Supply, 709 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown, from Mondays through Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Photos may also be sent to 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue, P.O. Box 549, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 or dropped off at the fair office on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. The deadline for entry is Aug. 18. Photos must be 5-by-7-inch or 8-by-10-inch. To ensure good visibility, vertical 8-by10-inch photographs are recommended. Photos must fit in an 8-by-10-inch space. If more than one photo of the same pet is submitted, both photos must fit in the 8-by-10-inch space. Photos may be cut to fit and stapled or taped to the display.
The owner’s name, address and phone number, as well as the pet’s breed and name, must be indicated on the back of the photos. Entries are limited to two per family. Photos will be on display for voting throughout fair week. Attendees may vote for their favorite photos for a nominal fee. Gift certificates will be awarded to the people who submitted the three pet photos that receive the most votes. It is recommended that photos be picked up on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the pet photo display following the announcement of winners. Any photos not picked up at this time will be available for pickup at Waggin’ Wheels Pet Supply. All photos must be claimed by Friday, Sept. 7. Proceeds from the pet photo contest will benefit the 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue and the Elizabethtown Fair. For more information, readers may call Gail at 717575-3160.
