ARRIVING LATE?
Chatter Hi, everyone! That was quite the hot spell we went through last week, wasn’t it? You probably didn’t see me much around town last week, because I not only hibernate when it is cold, I also hibernate when it is extremely hot out! I am a big sissy-whiner when it comes to extreme temperatures. Give me anywhere between 45 degrees and 85 degrees and I am just fine though. Oh yeah, and low humidity too. I don’t ask for much! You Are Wonderful The following true story captured our heart. It happened several years ago in the Paris opera house. A famous singer had been contracted to sing, and ticket sales were booming. In fact, the night of the concert found the house packed and every ticket sold. The feeling of anticipation and excitement was in the air as the house manager took the stage and said, “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your enthusiastic support. I am afraid that due to illness, the man whom you’ve all come to hear will not be performing tonight. However, we have found a suitable substitute we hope will provide you with comparable entertainment.” The crowd groaned in disappointment and failed to hear the announcer mention the stand-in’s name. The environment turned from excitement to frustration. The stand-in performer gave the performance everything he had. When he had finished, there was nothing but an uncomfortable silence. No one applauded.
Suddenly, from the balcony, a little boy stood up and shouted, “Daddy, I think you are wonderful!” The crowd broke into thunderous applause. We all need people in our lives who are willing to stand up once in a while and say, “I think you are wonderful.” Happy Birthdays First for this week, an extra special birthday wish goes out to my beautiful granddaughter, Shoshannah Miller of Hummelstown! Her sixth cake-day is July 12. I hope your birthday brings you as much happiness as you bring us, Shoshannah! Nana and Pop-Pop love you so much! Also a special birthday wish goes out to my great-nephew Aiden Donar of Middletown! His fifth cake-day is July 12. I hope your day is full of really cool presents, Aiden! Aunt Sissy and Uncle Kevin love you! Happy birthday to Darius “DJ” Jerome of Middletown! His cakeday is July 11. I hope your day is packed full of awesomeness, DJ! Happy birthday to Fanny Thompson of Royalton! Her cake-day is July 11. I hope your day is lovely like you, Fanny! Happy birthday to Donna Keefer of Royalton! Her cake-day is July 11. I hope your day is full of everything and everyone that makes you happy, Donna! Happy birthday to Stan Bell of Londonderry Township! His cake-day is July 11. I hope your day makes you feel like a king, Stan! Happy birthday to Brandon DeArmond of Middletown! His

God’s Clothes Closet God’s Clothes Closet at Evangelical United Methodist Church will be open on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 8 a.m. until noon at 157 E. Random Thought Each year it seems like there’s a little more ham in the ol’ hammock ... if you know what I’m sayin’. Recipe of the Week Easy Dinner Hash This recipe serves two, but it is easily scaled to fit the number of people being served. Just double everything for four people, triple for six, etc. Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 8 ounces bulk Italian sausage 1 potato, peeled and diced 1/4 onion, chopped 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese Directions: 1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the sausage, and cook until crumbly and just slightly pink, about 5 minutes. 2. Stir in the diced potato and onion. Continue cooking until the potatoes are tender and have lightly browned, 10 to 15 minutes. 3. Once the potatoes are tender, stir in the mixed vegetables until hot. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 4. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese before serving. Tip of the Week Clean your old cookie sheets with a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Just mix enough to make a wet paste and spread it on your cookie sheets (I even mix it right on the cookie sheets). Let it sit for a while (about an hour) and then use a nylon scrubbie to clean. They will look nice and shiny when you’re done! Thank You Thanks to Ann Hursh of Lower Swatara Township Office for the Random Thought! Love it! Food for Thought It is not what you gather but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived. Have a great week, everybody!

The newest Harrisburg falcons were recently banded in a livestreamed educational event attended by local students and hosted by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Pennsylvania Game Commission at the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg. Talking with students from Pine Grove High School and St. Stephens Episcopal School, DEP secretary Patrick McDonnell noted the symbolism of having a thriving peregrine nest on top of the building named for an influential pioneer of modern environmentalism, Rachel Carson. Game Commission biologist Art McMorris led the team in bringing the nestlings in from the 15th-floor ledge. He weighed the birds, inspected their health, and banded them. A Pine Grove
student recorded the weight and band code for each. The peregrine falcon was removed from the federal Endangered Species List in 1999 but remains federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is listed as endangered in Pennsylvania and protected under the Game and Wildlife Code. Sixty-eight falcons have now hatched since the nest was installed at the Rachel Carson Building in 1996.
