The Pennsylvania National Guard recently held its annual Guard Day at the Capitol to showcase the mission and capabilities of the Pennsylvania National Guard to state legislators, staff, and visitors through numerous displays. House and Senate resolutions proclaimed May 23 as National Guard Day in Pennsylvania. The event served as an opportunity for Pennsylvania National Guard leadership and members to interact with state lawmakers. The day began with a breakfast meeting with Maj. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general, along with other Pennsylvania National Guard senior staff and dozens of legislators and their staff. During the meeting, Carrelli thanked the legislators for their role in supporting the Pennsylvania National Guard and talked about the positive role the Guard plays in the
commonwealth. Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard live in every community and work as teachers, police officers, firefighters, students, nurses, and more. Guard members representing a variety of units and functions of the Pennsylvania National Guard set up displays in the rotunda. Soldiers and Airmen explained to legislators, staff, and visitors their roles in the 19,000-member force, the third-largest Guard in the nation. When the House and Senate were called to session, several outstanding Guard members were recognized for their accomplishments on the House floor. Also honored by the House were Chief Warrant Officer 2 Erik Roberts with the 28th Infantry Division and Chief Master Sgt. Keith Lloyd with the 201st RED HORSE, 111th Attack Wing.

Scouts from pg 1 The next adventure took Scouts to the Susquehanna River as preparation for a weeklong canoeing trip in Ontario, Canada. The Scouts paddled along the shoreline of Hill Island, where they practiced their strokes and paddling techniques. They also went fishing. Troop members then headed south to North East, Md., to attend Camp Rodney summer camp. The camp is located along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Many of the Scouts took advantage of their extensive merit badge programs and took courses on astronomy, space exploration, robotics, electronics, game design, and electricity. Others spent their time with courses in bird study, swimming, forestry, fishing, insect study, nature, camping, canoeing, climbing, oceanography, lifesaving, and shotgun and rifle shooting. Hands-on art courses included basketry, music, pottery, and sculpture. The Scouts spent
their evenings at Camp Rodney honing their cooking skills by making unusual desserts. The troop ended the month with community service at the Geyers United Methodist vacation Bible school. The Scouts set up games over the course of the week for more than 40 participants. They did water relays, obstacle courses, gaga, and water balloon games. Other planned summer events included Northern Tier High Adventure canoeing and fishing and camping in Atikokan, Ontario. A trip to Gettysburg including a ghost tour, battlefield hiking, and camping is also on the schedule, and Middletown National Night Out and Guppy Gulch High Adventure Water Park and camping in Delta will round out the summer. For more information on Troop 97, readers may call Kevin Little at 717-944-1957 or Ted Pauley at 717-944-2766. Troop 97 is sponsored by Londonderry Fire Company.

Hi, everyone! I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! It has been beautiful out, hasn’t it?! I don’t even mind the occasional rainstorm in the summer; I actually like them. I remember sitting on the front porch with my nan (Fleta Pilsitz) whenever we would have rainstorms. No television or radio playing, just the sound of the rain pelting the roof and the streets. It was so peaceful. If I close my eyes, I can remember that smell. The heat and the dust from the sidewalks made a musty sort of smell, but it was pleasant to me. Still to this day, I love sitting out on the porch while it is raining. It’s like a time machine that transports me back to the easier, slower-paced days. 20 Things I Remember about Growing Up in Royalton in the ’70s 1. Spending all day building a fort with my friends Donald and Jeff down by the river. 2. Waiting to hear my name called at the end of “Romper Room.” (It never happened, Miss Marsha!) 3. Stargazing on a blanket in my backyard. 4. Listening to Casey Kasem’s Top 40 on WKBO while lying in a docked boat at my grandma’s boat landing. 5. Worshipping Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, Frankie Valli, and Elton John. (Yes, I was boy-crazy). 6. Going to one of the four penny candy stores in Royalton: Bob & Romaines, Sides Store, Helms, and John Bryan’s. 7. Drinking a 10-cent pony bottle of Coke from the corner store and then taking the empty bottle back in the store to get five cents’ worth of penny candy. 8. The old man named Harold at Bob & Romaines who would give me a whole handful of red fish when I only had a nickel. 9. All the neighborhood kids getting together after dark to catch lightning bugs. 10. Catching little tiny hoptoads over on Poplar Island. 11. Popping tar bubbles on the hot roads in the summer and having blackstained feet all the time. 12. The Ice Cream Man. 13. Bud the Meat Man coming to the house once a week to sell meats, cheese, produce, and candy from his truck. 14. The Kiwanis Fair at the end of August that marked the end of summer to children. (I loved watching and listening to the bands that would play on a flatbed in front of the Quonset hut and the cows under the pavilion and the amusement rides and the art
competitions inside the hut.) 15. Being able to throw ball or flying disc in the street because there weren’t as many cars back then. 16. Playing mother-may-I, tag, hide-nseek, hopscotch, red rover, Simon says, and red-light/green-light. 17. Sledding down Allen Street hill and Water Street hill. 18. Ice skating on the creek. 19. Going across the aqueduct bridge to the sock hops and outdoor concerts at the Rescue Fire House. 20. Listening to the carillon playing hymns from the Royalton Church and seeing the big reddish-orange neon cross glowing at night. I feel extremely blessed for growing up where I did. So much so, that I made Royalton my home in my adult life so my children could experience the same kind of childhood I did. Hurray for small communities with big hearts! Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Joyce Shenfeld of Royalton! Her cake-day is July 19. I hope your day is absolutely perfect, Joyce! Happy birthday to Kelly Kreiser (the younger one) of Royalton! I hope your day is sweet like you, Jackie! Happy birthday to Brad Baxter of Royalton! His cake-day is July 20. I hope your day makes you feel like a king, Brad! Recipe of the Week Easy Slow Cooker Chicken for Two This recipe can be doubled for a family of four! Ingredients: 6 boneless skinless chicken thighs 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon paprika 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning salt and pepper to taste 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon cooking oil 1/2 cup cooking sherry (or broth) 1/4 cup chicken broth 1 cup frozen peas and carrots 1 (5.1-ounce) box of Parmesan Cheese Pasta Roni (and the ingredients to prepare it). Directions: 1. Place the chicken thighs on a plate under-side up. 2. Mix together the mustard, poultry seasoning, and paprika in a small bowl. 3. Brush mixture on the undersides of all the thighs. 4. Flip the thighs on the plate and salt and pepper them. 5. Sprinkle flour all over top of the thighs. 6. Meanwhile, in a skillet heat the oil. 7. Once the oil is hot, place the thighs in the oil flour side down and sprinkle all remaining flour from the plate on top of the thighs. 8. Once the thighs become golden, flip them in the skillet (or browning slow cooker) and cook for 1 minute. 9. Remove the thighs from the skillet and place in a 4-quart slow cooker. Pour the sherry and broth into the skillet to remove any bits. 10. Pour the liquid from the skillet over the chicken. 11. Cook on low for 4 hours. 12. About 15 minutes before serving, prepare the Pasta Roni per the box instructions, adding the peas and carrots during the first step. 13. Serve the chicken over the pasta and veggies. Joke of the Week If you need a laugh, then read through these children’s science exam answers.
Q: Name the four seasons. A: Salt, pepper, mustard, and vinegar. Q: Explain one of the processes by which water can be made safe to drink. A: Flirtation makes water safe to drink because it removes large pollutants like grit, sand, dead sheep, and canoeists. Q: How is dew formed? A: The sun shines down on the leaves and makes them perspire. Q: How can you delay milk turning sour? A: Keep it in the cow. Q: What causes the tides in the oceans? A: The tides are a fight between the Earth and the Moon. All water tends to flow towards the moon, because there is no water on the moon, and nature hates a vacuum. I forget where the sun joins in this fight. Q: What are steroids? A: Things for keeping carpets still on the stairs Q: What happens to your body as you age? A: When you get old, so do your bowels and you get intercontinental. Q: How are the main parts of the body categorized? (e.g., abdomen.) A: The body is consisted into three parts - the brainium, the borax, and the abdominal cavity. The brainium contains the brain; the borax contains the heart and lungs, and the abdominal cavity contains the five bowels, A, E, I, O, and U.. Q: What is the fibula? A: A small lie. Q: What does “varicose” mean? A: Nearby. Q: Give the meaning of the term “Caesarean Section.” A: The Caesarean Section is a district in Rome Q: What does the word “benign” mean?’ A: Benign is what you will be after you be eight. Fact of the Week Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of a dense orange clay called “pygg.” When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as “pygg banks.” When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a bank that resembled a pig. And that is how the “Piggy Bank” originated. Thank You Thanks to Francis Kasper of Middletown for the joke! I liked those kids’ answers! Thanks to Donna Louer of Middletown for the Food for Thought! Amen! Food for Thought “If you have a Bible, OPEN IT. If you open it, READ IT. If you read it, BELIEVE IT. If you believe it, LIVE IT!” Have a great week, everybody!

Since 1993, the fundraising event has generated more than $869,000 in total contributions to the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation (PFAF), a charitable organization supported by PFB. PFAF funds a variety of projects, including six Mobile Agriculture Education Science Labs, the Ag on the Go program and the weeklong Educator’s Ag Institute for teachers working with students in prekindergarten through 12th grade. Through PFAF programs, children learn about farming, the environment, and nutrition. PFB has more than 62,000 member families, representing farms of every size and commodity across Pennsylvania.
