The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of Harrisburg/Central recently announced that its 2018 MDA Shamrocks fundraising program raised over $50,000 to help free children and adults from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related muscle-debilitating diseases. From February through the end of March, more than 30 local grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants participated in the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day fundraising program in which customers purchased an iconic paper MDA shamrock at checkout. Each shamrock was signed by customers and displayed in each store, symbolizing strength, independence, and life for MDA families in the community. The preserved land includes aircraft flight paths that if developed, would restrict important training activities and disturb potential residents. The team also burns an average of 2,000 to 3,000 acres per year to establish and maintain native grasslands which also provide realistic military training areas for soldiers. Regularly conducting burns helps reduce the build-up of “fuels” and reduces military training delays caused by unplanned wildfires. Diakon Reports Local Benefit Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries had a more than $20 million community benefit last year. The nonprofit organization, which locally operates Diakon Youth Services and Diakon Adoption and Foster Care, with an office in York, recently released its 2017 community benefit report detailing an overall impact of $20.071 million. The figure represents charitable care provided within Diakon’s senior living communities and its range of child and family services, as well as free public educational sessions, the provision of free meeting space for community groups, service as a clinical training site, and veterans’ assistance-related education. Regional community benefit amounted to nearly $500,000. Community benefit refers to the way Diakon makes a difference beyond direct service and speaks to Diakon’s particular concern for those with lower incomes or other limited resources. Quantification of community benefit was done in accordance with national guidelines developed by the Catholic Health Association of the United States, particularly in terms of social accountability for Continuing Care Retirement Communities. For more details, readers may contact William Swanger at 717795-0308 or swangerb@ diakon.org.

Younger children are welcome to watch a VeggieTales movie inside the church, where free child care will be provided during the movie showing. According to pastor Daryl Heistand, the community picnic is a tradition that began in 2008 and has been growing ever since. “It’s a way we can bless the community and get to know people,” Heistand said. Claire Lynch and her band will perform bluegrass music at the festival. Music legends David Bromberg and Rory Block will return to central Pennsylvania with a host of other acoustic music performers as part of the Susquehanna Folk Festival. The event will take place on Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry. Bromberg plays a mixture of bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz and other styles. He is known for his ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time, a technique he learned from blues icon the Rev. Gary Davis. Bromberg has collaborated with well-known musicians, including Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, and Bob Dylan. He co-wrote the song “The Holdup” with Beatles member George Harrison, who played on Bromberg’s self-titled 1972 album. Block, a noted blueswoman, released her latest album, “A Woman’s Soul,” on July 6. The album delivers a deep blues tribute to Bessie Smith. Block is known as one of the most powerful acoustic blues performers alive today. Additional performers will include bluegrass great Claire Lynch Band; David Holt, a traditional American musician and host of PBS’ “State of Music”; Trian, a Celtic group; Texas swing group The Quebe Sisters; and Liz Carroll. Many local acts will be featured, as well, as part of

the Emerging Artist Showcase. In total, the festival will feature more than 70 musicians and workshop presenters. Attendees are encouraged to bring acoustic guitars, banjos and other instruments to join in the many jam sessions planned. All stages for the Susquehanna Folk Festival are indoor or under tents. The festival grounds are handicappedaccessible. Tickets also include access to dance, music and art workshops, along with children’s activities. Attendees may learn to play slide guitar from Block or take part in a swing dance class while dancing to the music of The Quebe Sisters. Children’s activities will include juggling taught by the Give and Take Jugglers and a jug band instrument activity led by Slim Harrison. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.JulyFolkFest.org or call 800-8383006. Admission is free to children age 12 and under. More information and the full schedule are available at the aforementioned website. Pictured on front: David Bromberg (right photo)will be among the performers at the Susquehanna Folk Festival, slated to take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. Rory Block (left photo) will perform and lead slide guitar workshops during the festival.

Hi, everyone! Rain, rain, go away, come again some other day! Do you remember chanting that as a kid? I need some more sunshine! I mean, I like rain, but summer is slipping by too fast! Bill His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of profound and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can’t find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can’t blame him for

what he’s going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man’s cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can’t even hear anyone breathing. The minister can’t even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won’t be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control, he says, “What I’m about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget.” “Be careful how you live. You may be the only Jesus some people will ever meet!” BFB A Big Fat Belated birthday wish goes out to Colleen Boyle of Lower Swatara Township! Her cake-day was July 14. Recipe of the Week Avocado Chicken Salad Easy, delicious chicken salad with lemon dressing, plenty of avocado, bacon and corn. For even more protein, add two hardboiled eggs.

Ingredients: 2 large cooked chicken breasts shredded or chopped 2 large avocados 1 cup corn from 1 cooked cob 6 ounce lean bacon cooked and chopped 1/4 cup chives (or green onion), chopped 2 tablespoons dill, chopped, or to taste 2 hard-boiled eggs, diced. This is optional. Lemon Dressing: 3 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon sea salt or to taste 1/8 teaspoon black pepper Directions: 1. Dice or shred the chicken and place in large mixing bowl. 2. Peel and pit 2 large avocados, slice into bite size pieces and add to the bowl. 3. Add 1 cup of cooked corn, toss in 1/4 cup chopped green onion, chopped bacon, and the fresh dill. 4. Add dressing ingredients to a small bowl and stir to combine. Drizzle over your salad and toss to combine. Tip of the Week To anyone who is allergic to poison ivy ... I have learned a very helpful and useful trick! All you need are brown paper bags and apple cider vinegar. Cut the bag in strips as big as the spots you’ll be covering and soak those strips in the vinegar. Simply apply to the areas and allow to air dry (about 15 min). You will see, physically, the oil being pulled from the ivy spots! It is amazing! Really a good hack if you’re prone to the itchy red monster. Thank You Thanks to Fred Auch of Londonderry Township for the piece about the guy named Bill! I love you, Fred Auch! Thanks to Todd Tezak of Royalton for the Random Thought! My granddaughter is good at this. Ha ha ha! Thanks to Lauren Davis of Lower Swatara Township for the tip! That tip may come in handy sometime, I am sure! Food for Thought God gave us memories, that we might have June roses in the December of our lives. -James M. Barrie Have a great week, everybody!
