Troop 97 Explores Canadian Waterways Londonderry Township Boy Scout Troop 97 recently took a High Adventure camping, canoeing, and fishing trip to Ontario, Canada. Upon their arrival in Minnesota, the troop visited the Mall of America to eat and take a stroll after sitting on the long flight. The group then learned about the history of Minneapolis during a tour of the Mill City Museum. The Scouts also viewed waterfalls. After touring the local sights, the Scouts spent their first night at Blue Sky Adventure Base Camp in Minneapolis. The evening included a pizza party, rock wall climbing, sporting events, and a movie. The next morning, the group departed at 7 a.m. to travel seven hours by van to the next base camp in Atikokan, Ontario. The town serves as one of the main entry points into Quetico Provincial Park.
The group of 16 troop members split into two crews, each with its own interpreter. One crew planned to take the Call of the Loon 60-mile trek through lakes and woods, while the other crew planned to take the Chrysemys Picta 51mile trek on riverways with picturesque waterfalls. The groups became familiar with their maps, charted their courses, were fitted for oars, and packed their food and supplies. After another night’s sleep and one last shower, the two crews parted ways for the next six days. Part of the adventure was portaging, carrying the canoes and equipment over land in order to get to the next waterway. Sometimes the portages were short treks through shallow water, but other times they involved more strenuous hiking. One portage was a two-and-one-half hour hike through a quarter-mile of waist-high mud. See Troop 97 pg 4

Chatter Hi, everyone! Happy August already! The lazy hazy days of summer are now into the last unofficial month of summer, so let’s make the most of it! God’s Days There are two days in the week upon which and about which I never worry - two carefree days kept sacredly free from fear and apprehension. One of these days is Yesterday. Yesterday, with its cares and fret and pains and aches, all its faults, its mistakes and blunders, has passed forever beyond my recall. It was mine; it is God’s. The other day that I do not worry about is Tomorrow. Tomorrow, with all its possible adversities, its burdens, its perils, its large promise and performance, its failures and mistakes, is as far beyond my mastery as its dead sister, Yesterday. Tomorrow is God’s day; it will be mine. There is left, then, for myself but one day in the week - Today. Any man can fight the battles of today. Any woman can carry the burdens of just one day; any man can resist the temptation of today. It is only when we willfully add the burden of these two awful eternities - Yesterday and Tomorrow - such burdens as only the Mighty God can sustain - that we break down. It isn’t the experience of Today that drives men mad. It is the remorse of what happened Yesterday and fear of what Tomorrow might bring. These are God’s days. Leave them to Him. life stress-free? Recipe of the Week Milk Pie Delicious! Mix sugar, flour, and salt in pie shell with your finger. 2. Add the cream (half-and-half is fine). 3. Finish filling crust with milk. 4. Sprinkle with nutmeg. 5. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, then 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Tip of the Week Serve tacos to children in small mugs (or coffee cups) so they can hold the mug to eat them and avoid making a huge mess! Fact of the Week One of the earliest uses of sunglasses was in about the 12th century in China, where they were said to be worn by judges to conceal their expressions while presiding over court. Joke of the Week I went down the street to a 24hour grocery store. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door. I said, “Hey! The sign says you’re open 24 hours.” He said, “Yes, but not in a row!” Thank You Thanks to Ann Hursh of Lower Swatara Township for the Random Thought! Good question! Food for Thought Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. Have a great week, everybody!

Elizabethtown Fair each August,” Landis stated. “A casual observer may at first assume the livestock show is all about the animals in the ring. However, it is the young handlers who are the stars, exhibiting a wealth of dedication, love, knowledge, and courage as they raise, show, and sell their livestock.” “In a circle, one ring larger yet just as important, is the Elizabethtown community - families, businesses, and organizations that encourage, support, and celebrate our agricultural heritage,” Landis continued. The original cover painting will be auctioned off at 9 p.m. Additional items will include floral arrangements in dated crocks designed by local florists. Proceeds from the baked goods and arts and crafts auctions will benefit the Elizabethtown Fair. Arts and crafts auction donations are still being sought. Individuals who are interested in donating an item may contact Darlene Halterman at 717-367-0108 or drop off a donation at the Elizabethtown Fair office between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Aug. 18. Ralph Henry from Vision Resources of Central Pennsylvania received the UniqueSource Achievement Award from UniqueSource Products and Services on June 18 at an Embrace the Abilities event at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. Embrace the Abilities showcased the skills and talents that individuals with disabilities bring to the workplace. Henry was among 29 member employees who received the UniqueSource Achievement Award. During the trip, one crew decided to take a 3 a.m. paddle through the misty waters and morning fog to hear the calls of the loons. The group took a break on a beach on a small island where they fished, swam, ate, and slept. Group members woke at 9 p.m. to go on a nighttime paddle. The Scouts had vivid views of the galaxy, and they observed satellites orbiting the earth. The Scouts visited historical sites during paddling stops. One crew came across a 1944 prisoner-of-war camp that housed German prisoners during World War II. The Scouts also paddled onto the shores at White Otter Castle, a home built by woodsman Jimmy McQuat. Wildlife was plentiful during the trip. The Scouts spotted bald eagles, loons,
bears, and moose. Mosquitoes were abundant. Fishing was a favorite activity, with small mouth bass and northern pike being the primary catch. At the end of the trip, the two groups reunited and shared stories of their canoeing trips. Upcoming adventures for Troop 97 include camping, hiking, and a ghost tour in Gettysburg; a Middletown National Night Out Community Service project; Guppy Gulch High Adventure Waterpark in Delta; and a camping, hiking, and fishing trip in Poe Paddy State Park in Coburn. For more information, readers may contact Kevin Little at 717-944-1957 or Ted Pauley at 717-944-2766. Troop 97 is sponsored by Londonderry Fire Company.

The Pennsylvania National Horse Show (PNHS), presented by The Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund, has made significant changes for this year’s show, including increased prize money and an improved schedule. The 73rd annual event is set to welcome back the nation’s top horses and riders to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg, from Thursday, Oct. 11, through Saturday, Oct. 20. With an increase of over 30 percent in prize money for the Grand Prix, a star-studded field of international horses and riders can be expected for this year’s $132,000 Grand Prix de Penn National. Prize money has also been increased to $50,000 in The PA Big Jump speed competition. All Open Jumper competitions will be conducted under Federation Equestre International (FEI) rules, with four classes counting toward the Longines FEI World Jumping Rankings List. The 2018 PNHS will continue to host three North American League (NAL) Jumper Finals and two NAL Hunter Finals - all with increased prize money of $12,500 per final. The five NAL divisions include: Adult Jumper, Children’s Jumper, Adult Hunter, Children’s Hunter,
PUBLIC
and Low Junior/Amateur Jumper. This year’s show will also offer a new combined Amateur and Amateur-Owner Jumper 1.35m section and increased entry numbers for the Green Hunter 3’ and Green Hunter 3’3” Divisions. All hunter sections, including the Green Hunter 3’ and Green Hunter 3’3” will use USEF Points to determine acceptance. Points will be based on a horse’s best 15 shows during the qualifying year, Aug. 21, 2017, to Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018. For qualifying purposes only, points from both the 3’ and 3’3” sections during the qualifying year will be used and a horse may only enter one section. That section choice may not be changed after the closing date of entries. The PNHS is a premier equestrian event attracting the nation’s top hunters and jumpers and features many of the top names in the sport. During the 10 days of national competition, 1,400 qualified junior and adult competitors from the U.S. and abroad vie for more than $500,000 in prize money and eight national championships. For more information, updates, promotions, vendor information, tickets, and more, readers may visit www.panational.org or call 717-770-0222.

DAR Chapter Honors Business
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Harrisburg Chapter representatives Teri Fegley (far left), registrar; Lisa L. Lugovich (second from left), regent; and Shirley Hoffman (far right), member, presented an NSDAR certificate to Steve Jablonsky, general manager of Camping World Harrisburg, on June 14. The DAR group recognized the business for proper use and correct display and patriotic presentation of the United States flag. The business has displayed the American flag for many years, sending them for repairs when needed to ensure they are well maintained. The DAR’s mission is to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. In May 2019, the Harrisburg Chapter will celebrate its 125th year and the launch of a chapter history including biographies of more than 60 people involved in the Revolutionary War.
