The Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society has announced that the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat is again sailing. The boat returned to sailing for a cruise with a “Princess” theme on Aug. 20. The boat’s family-focused cruises typically sail every other Monday, but the previous two dates had to be canceled due to high waters. On Aug. 20, more than 60 girls gathered at the riverboat’s docks, ready to board for the first family cruise in over a month. golfers really appreciate how well it is run,” Sturgis said. The tournament will feature a four-person scramble format. Registration will open at 12:30 p.m., and play will commence at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Participation is limited to the first 120 golfers. To register in advance as a single player or a team, interested individuals may email chelsea.bright@hopewithin.org; call 717-367-9797, ext. 303; or visit www.hopewithin.org and click on the Events tab. Corporate sponsors are also needed. Prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place teams, plus individual prizes will be given for hole-in-one, longest putt, longest drive for male and female, straightest drive, and closest to the pin. Players may also opt to purchase three mulligans for a nominal fee. A post-tournament catered meal and brief awards ceremony are set to begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. Individuals who would like to support Hope Within but forego the golf competition are welcome to sign up for the dinner only. Attendees may bid on a variety of silent auction items, including gift baskets and gift cards to area businesses and attractions. “We’re really trying to put together a unique selection of things that appeal to men and women, families, and athletes,” noted Sturgis.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Hope Within Ministries, which operates a community health center at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. The faith-based center provides free primary health care to medically uninsured individuals from Lancaster, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties, as well as low-cost mental health counseling services. Sturgis said that the organization’s counseling center has been booming and additional funds are needed to continue serving the increasing number of people seeking services. Mental health counseling is provided on a self-pay, income-based sliding scale fee with no other eligibility requirements. Hope Within staff and intern therapists offer a scope of therapeutic services, including individual, couple, family, premarital, and marital therapy. Hope Within is in the process of partnering with two area colleges that offer master’s-level counseling programs in order to obtain more counselors and be able to expand and accept more individuals who are in need of mental health services. “We want to be a place of early access to help,” explained Sturgis. “The wait can be long to access care. Time and cost are significant barriers, and we want to remove those and save lives.” To learn more about Hope Within, readers may visit www.hopewithin.org or call 717-367-9797.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition -
Christ Church United Church of Christ (UCC), 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, has been a part of religious and civic life in Elizabethtown since 1743. To celebrate its 275th anniversary, the congregation has planned a series of events dubbed “Inspiring a Legacy of Faith” on Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 9. “Like our Sunday services themselves, all are welcome,” said the Rev. Dr. Galen Russell III, lead pastor of Christ Church. “We want to see all our friends and neighbors here to celebrate with us.” The weekend of events will kick off with a family movie night at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 7 with a free showing of “I Can Only Imagine” outside the church under a large tent. Refreshments will be available to purchase. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the public is invited to a Legacy of Faith Festival at the church from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Food, games, live music, children’s activities, and commercial and craft vendors will all be part of the fun. To learn more about renting a vendor space for the festival, interested individuals may email kisstwink@gmail.com or dikretzing@gmail.com or visit www. etownucc.org. Following the festival will be the Christ Church 275th anniversary dinner buffet and program at 6 p.m. Dinner will feature a menu of pork loin, potatoes, steamed seasonal vegetables, and dessert. The Lancaster Brass Quintet will present a concert, and guest speakers will include Andy Lang, executive director of Open and Affirming Coalition of the UCC, and the Rev. Dr. Monica Dawkins, conference minister for the Penn Central Conference UCC. Video greetings by the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, president of the UCC, will be presented, as well as a slideshow. Tickets are available for a set fee and must be purchased in advance at the church or by calling 717-367-1208. Children age 9 and younger may attend free of charge. On Sept. 9, the community is invited to attend Spirit Sunday, with worship and Faith Formation at 9 a.m., fellowship at
10 a.m., and worship at 10:30 a.m. Russell’s sermon will be on the topic of “Inspiring a Legacy of Faith.” A portion of the proceeds from all of the weekend’s events will benefit Community Place on Washington, a collaborative effort between United Elizabethtown Area Churches and community members, organizations, businesses, and social service providers to establish a centralized location for community services to serve those in need. This summer, individuals from Christ Church helped in the renovation efforts that are currently underway for Community Place on Washington. “This church has always had outreach to the local and wider community as one of its backbones,” remarked Russell, adding that church members have taken part in a mission trip every year for the last 15 years. The trips intentionally rotate between local, national, and international efforts. “Our congregation is blessed to be a part of this community and have been since we first started meeting in 1743,” stated Russell. “Our involvement with the Community Place on Washington reaffirms our commitment to the future of Elizabethtown. That’s what we mean by inspiring a legacy of faith as we go forward.” Russell also emphasizes Christ Church’s vision to practice the belief that all are welcome and to make that widely known. That vision, Russell said, coincides well with the church’s motto: “No matter who you are or where you are in life’s journey, you are welcome here.” “We truly strive to practice that,” enthused Russell. Pictured on front: The Rev. Dr. Galen Russell III, lead pastor of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown, invites the community to join in celebrating the congregation’s 275th anniversary. Community events are planned for Sept. 7 to 9.

Cody McSherry from pg 1 Diatonic Open at the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration, a competition open to both professional and amateur musicians of any age, for the second consecutive year. He also placed second, also for the second consecutive year, in the event’s main competition, the Leavenworth Open, which was open to both professional and amateur musicians of any age playing accordions of any type. McSherry also scored first place in the duet competition, where he teamed up with friend and accordionist Emmanuel Gasser of Ontario, Canada. The two did not even have an opportunity to practice together until two days before the competition. McSherry has been playing the accordion since the age of 6 and the diatonic accordion since the age of 8. On the piano accordion, each key or button plays the same note whether the bellows are pulled or pushed. On the diatonic accordion’s bisonoric button box, each button plays

two notes - one when the bellows are pulled, and a second when the bellows are pushed. To play the correct note, a player must push the correct button, but also move the bellows in the correct direction. The two types of accordions also differ in their arrangement of the buttons. On the diatonic accordion, the buttons are arranged in an order based on chords rather than alphabetically like the notes on a piano keyboard. The button box is best known for its strong association with folk music of Slovenia, Austria and Germany. In the U.S., it is known for its use in Cleveland- style polka music. At the Steelton Button Box Bash, McSherry will be joined by some big names in the button box world, including composer and musician Ron Pivovar of western Pennsylvania, William Hayes of Virginia, David Bey of North Carolina and Jeff Dermes, a wellknown musician from Steelton.

Hi, everyone! September is basically just hours away! We are in a new school year already. My granddaughter just started first grade! Add that to the fact that my little baby boy will be 30 in less than two weeks and there you have it ... time is flying by like the wind, and I just cannot grab onto it. I want to hold onto “now just a little longer. I need to follow my own constant advice and savor each moment. I am always on the move, going somewhere or doing something, and I truly believe this makes time seem like it is passing by faster and faster. I need to sit on the porch more. I need to go for walks down by the river. I need to lay on

More than half of repair calls are for systems that are not properly maintained. Most HVAC repairs, including those expensive after hour calls, could be prevented with regular seasonal maintenance. Call Leo Kob Company for a Preventative Maintenance Agreement (PMA) to make sure your heating and air conditioning units are running at peak efficiency. You will receive a thorough cleaning and complete checkup of your system to ensure that it is safe and fully operational. You will also receive a 10% discount on all parts and labor for any other HVAC service call during the time the PMA is in effect.

a blanket in the backyard and look at the clouds. I need to pop tar bubbles with my toes. I need to sit in a boat and read a book. I need to look at old pictures and reminisce. I need to talk to my parents more often. Seize the Moment Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible. How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn’t suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word “refrigeration mean nothing to you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched Jeopardy on television? I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, “How about going to lunch in a half hour? She would gas up and stammer, “I can’t. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain. And my personal favorite: “It’s Monday. She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together. Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect! We’ll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Stevie toilet-trained. We’ll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We’ll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college. Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of “I’m going to..., “I plan on... and “Someday, when things are settled down a bit. When anyone calls my “seize the moment friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord. My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It’s just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy. Now ... go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to ... not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going

to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry-go-round or listened to the rain plopping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask “How are you? do you hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Have you ever told your child, “We’ll do it tomorrow, and in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say “Hi? When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift ... thrown away. Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over. 7 p.m. at Londonderry Elementary School. Random Thought Parallel lines have so much in common. It’s a shame they’ll never meet. Recipe of the Week Delicious Banana Muffins Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 large bananas, mashed 3/4 cup white sugar 1 egg 1/3 cup butter, melted Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat muffin pans with nonstick spray, or use paper liners. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. 2. Combine bananas, sugar, egg, and melted butter in a large bowl. Fold in flour mixture, and mix until smooth. Scoop into muffin pans. 3. Bake in preheated oven. Bake mini muffins for 10 to 15 minutes, and large muffins for 25 to 30 minutes. To test if they are done, muffins will spring back when lightly tapped. Tip of the Week Avoid using cold eggs and butter when baking. Sure, you know to bring the butter to room temperature, but it’s just as important for eggs - otherwise the mixture won’t emulsify properly. If you’re short on time, microwave cut-up butter on low in 5-second intervals, checking in between, and place eggs in a bowl of warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. Fact of the Week The word “nerd was coined by Dr. Seuss in his book “If I Ran the Zoo. Joke of the Week Husband: “The weather is so lovely today. Shall we go out for a quick jog? Wife: “Ha ha ha, I love the way you pronounce ‘Shall we go out and have a cake’! Food for Thought A good life is when you smile often, laugh a lot, and always realize how blessed you are for what you have.
