The concerts will feature Lara Hoggaard’s “Personent Hodie (“On This Day), Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria, Glenn Rudolph’s “The Dream Isaiah Saw, Dan Forrest’s “Festive First Noel and “The Work of Christmas, and “A Musicological Journey Through the 12 Days of Christmas. The concerts will conclude with the chorale’s traditional finale, “Silent Night, sung in the round by candlelight. Performances will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, at 8 p.m. at the High Center; Saturday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown; and Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4 p.m. at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg. A 15-minute prelude will be presented by the Messiah College Faculty Brass prior to each concert.
“Singing the Dance of Life will be the theme of the spring concert series. The repertoire ranges from chant and other selections from the Renaissance and Baroque eras to a mix of works by modern and classic composers, including standards from the American Songbook. Guest artist Dr. Todd Goranson will accompany the chorale on saxophone. Performances will take place on Friday, May 10, 2019, at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, and Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the High Center. Both concerts will start at 8 p.m. A pre-concert recital will be presented by Goranson beginning 15 minutes prior to each concert. Also this season, the chorale will join the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Messiah College Concert Choir, and the Messiah College Choral Arts Society for two performances of “Gloria by Francis Poulenc on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, 2019, at the Forum in Harrisburg. To purchase tickets or subscriptions, readers may visit www.susquehannachorale.org or call the Messiah College box office at 717-691-6036. Subscriptions may be purchased through Wednesday, Oct. 31. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more people. Pictured on front: The Susquehanna Chorale has announced its 2018-19 concert season, titled “The Susquehanna Chorale: Make It Your Tradition. The season will include the Youth Choral Festival, Candlelight Christmas concerts, “Singing the Dance of Life spring concerts, and performances of Francis Poulenc’s “Gloria.

Efforts To Preserve Land Tract Continue A significant opportunity was recently presented to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna. A plot of land, part of historic Soldiers Field where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training between 1885 and 1935 is being offered for sale to the Pennsylvania Chautauqua. Troops trained on Soldiers Field for service in the SpanishAmerican War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-to-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. Many postcards still exist picturing the soldiers and their daily lives while stationed at the field. On July 20, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land which will benefit the Mount Gretna community in various ways: by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities such as walking and fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas and Rails-to-Trails linkage; providing educational opportunities and programs such as tree identification, nature experiences and historical markers; and by providing periodic overflow parking for Mount Gretna’s many summer cultural activities and programs, as well as for area
businesses. Today, Mount Gretna is still visited each summer by thousands of people from throughout southcentral Pennsylvania, the U.S. and overseas. To date, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua has received nearly $850,000 in pledges from those who view the purchase of this portion of Soldiers Field as a unique and perhaps last-chance opportunity to protect and preserve this tract of land. A unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Board of Managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation.
ABWA Chapter Plans Meeting The Blue Mountain Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) invites the public to its monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. at the Dodge City Restaurant, located on the corner of Paxton and Cameron streets in Harrisburg. The speakers will be Seberina and Kelvin Pittman, representing a health insurance company. The evening will also include networking and dinner. For reservations or more information, readers may call Sharon Geary at 717-233-3250.

Neighborhood Hi, everyone! It is officially Autumn! Ahhhhhhhhtumn! Oh, how I love thee, Autumn! Prayer Heavenly Father, help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us, Lord, that the homeless person begging for money in the same spot every day who we feel should really get a job is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge ... and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love. At 7 p.m., the parade route will proceed north on Race Street, left onto Water Street heading west, then left onto Union Street heading south. The parade will disperse just before Karn’s Market. A parade route map and registration information is available at www.kiwanisclubofmiddle town.com. Random Thought If I had a dollar for every time I thought about you, I would start thinking about you. Recipe of the Week Easy Autumn Pear Cake Ingredients: 4 ounces (1/2 of 8-ounce package) cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup sour cream 1 egg 1 package (2-layer size) yellow cake mix 7 tablespoon butter, melted, divided 1 can (15 ounces) pear halves, drained, sliced into 1/2-inch slices 1 package (3 onces) lemon flavor gelatin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Beat first four ingredients in large bowl with mixer on low speed just until cake mix is moistened, stopping frequently to scrape side of bowl. Add 1/4 cup butter; beat on medium speed 2 min. (Batter will be thick.) 3. Spread batter onto bottom of 13-by-9-inch pan sprayed with cooking spray. Arrange pear slices over batter, pressing lightly into batter to secure. Sprinkle with dry gelatin mix and cinnamon. Drizzle with remaining butter; sprinkle with nuts. 4. Bake 40 to 45 min. or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Tip of the Week Fill an ice cube tray with coffee and freeze to make ice cubes you can use in your iced coffee drinks. It won’t water the iced coffee/iced latte down when they start to melt!

Fact of the Week Walt Disney’s “Frozen” is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen.” The names of four of the movie’s main characters - Hans, Kristoff, Anna and Sven - were intended as a tribute to him, especially when you say the names fast in that order. Joke of the Week A man sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog for Sale.” He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the back yard. The guy goes into the back yard and sees a mutt sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the mutt replies. “So, what’s your story?” The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, cause no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. “The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says “Ten dollars.” The guy says he’ll buy him, but asks the owner, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him for $10?” The owner replies, “Because he’s such a liar.” Food for Thought In order to see the rainbow, you must first endure some rain.

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 28, the live auction will begin and will feature various experiences and vacation packages, as well as the highly anticipated class baskets created by each class from kindergarten through grade eight. Elementary students will perform songs at approximately 7 p.m. MCCS director of development April Miller said that the students remain on stage while their class basket is auctioned off, which adds an element of excitement for everyone. “The kids cheer while people are bidding, and it’s a lot of fun for all of the people in the audience,” said Miller. On Sept. 29, the day will begin with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The silent and live auctions will start at 9 a.m. Sports memorabilia, getaways, amusement park passes, sporting event tickets, toys, home decor, tools, and outdoor equipment are just a

COLLEGE PLANNING STRATEGIES Planning for college is complex. What can students do to secure better college choices for themselves? How can you help provide for your child’s education without sacrificing your retirement savings or overburdening your child with debt? Reserve a place for yourself and a guest at a session hosted by Ray Stark, Financial Associate, and featuring Ron VanSteenacker, Regional Development Director, by calling 484-201-7368 or emailing ray.stark@thrivent.com. You may also register at connect.thrivent.com/ray-stark. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tue., Oct. 2, 2018, 7 p.m. Rosedale Church of the Nazarene 1901 Rosedale Ave Middletown, PA 17057

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, with additional prizes and giveaways available to all participants. Proceeds from the auction support the school’s operational expenses as it fulfills its mission to come alongside parents to educate children and youths academically and spiritually. According to Miller, 450 students are currently enrolled at MCCS, representing four counties and more than 80 local churches. Student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $180,000. “All of the money raised that weekend helps to support our school and our students,” explained Miller. “We want to glorify the Lord and thank Him for all He has done in our school already.” For anyone who may not be able to attend but would still to like to bid on items, or for those who want a sneak peek of what will be offered, the auction will feature online bidding and browsing at www.mccsauction.net. The website features detailed descriptions of each item up for bids.

Prevent Blindness, an eye health organization, has declared September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month to help educate the public on the need to protect vision while participating in sports activities. New annual data from Prevent Blindness shows that more than 33,000 Americans were treated for sports-related eye injuries last year. Eye injuries from any sport may include infection, corneal abrasions, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or a traumatic cataract. Eye injuries from water sports may include eye infections and irritations, and scratches or trauma from other swimmers. As part of September’s Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness has posted tips on buying sports eye protectors. Shoppers should always consult an eye care professional to get the best eye protection for their sport and lifestyle. Wearers of prescription glasses should ask their eye doctor to fit
them for prescription eye protection. Monocular athletes, those with only one eye that sees well, should ask their eye doctor what sports they may safely play. Athletes should not buy eye protection without lenses. Only lensed protectors are recommended for sports use. Athletes should make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes may cause serious injury. Fogging of the lenses can be a problem when a person is active. Some eye protection options are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Shoppers should try on different types to determine which is most comfortable for them. Shoppers should check an eye protector’s packaging to see if the item has been tested for sports use and if it is made of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate eye protection is the most impact resistant.
Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye guards from cutting the skin. Athletes should try on eye protectors to determine if they are the right size. The strap should be adjusted so it is not too tight or too loose. Athletes should consult their eye care professional to ensure eye protectors have a comfortable, safe fit. During Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness is offering printed materials to assist eye care professionals in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports. To request a free kit, readers may contact Angela Gerber at 973-882-0986, ext. 972, or agerber @libertysport.com. For more information on sports eye injury prevention or contact lens safety, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/sports-eye-safety.
World War II Roundtable To Meet The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will meet on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown. Alan Shapiro, who will celebrate his 94th birthday on Tuesday, Oct. 16, will be the guest speaker. Shapiro flew a variety of military aircraft, including the P-40 “Warhawk” fighter, the Waco CG4A glider, and the C-47 “Skytrain” transport. He was only 19 years old when he completed his first mission as pilot of a C-47. By the end of 1944, Shapiro
was flying supplies, including gas, ammunition, and howitzers, to Gen. George Patton’s units. On their return flight, their C-47 would sometimes be loaded with German prisoners of war. Shapiro and his crew also delivered supplies to ground troops during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Shapiro bought several planes of his own. He estimates that he logged approximately 3,500 hours of flight time. After college, he worked at an advertising agency, eventually starting his own, which he has directed for 60 years.
The Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for WWII veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.
