Lady Booters Pushed to Qualify for Districts by Eric Pyles

As the regular season winds down the Middletown girls’ soccer team continues to fight for their playoff lives. After a two-win week, the Lady Raiders are 6-8 and sit 14th in the District 3-2A rankings with three games remaining. Middletown has some ground to make up with those three remaining make-up games as only the top 10 2A teams qualify for the district playoffs. Middletown picked up some of that ground on October 8th with a 3-2 overtime win over Pequea Valley. Camryn Russ, who assisted on Middletown’s first two scores, netted the game winner in the 98th minute with help from Jocelyn Koser. Hayli Akakpo-Martin made it a 1-1 game early in the second half while Sarah Miscevish gave the Lady Raiders a

short-lived lead with her score in the 54th minute. Pequea Valley’s Brittany Shirk tied things back up with her 68th minute goal. Amanda Lee (10 saves) settled down after the Lady Indians scored the equalizer to secure the win for Middletown. The Lady Raiders needed just one overtime period to secure a 2-1 win over Susquehanna Township on October 9th. Once again it was Russ, with an assist from Koser, to the rescue as the junior accounted for both goals, netting the game winner four minutes into the first overtime period. AkakpoMartin provided the setup for Russ’ first goal that came with roughly 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Lee turned away six shots to secure her second straight overtime victory. “I would say that a lot of times, it comes down to heart, said head coach Tim Neff of the wins in overtime.

“Our girls have played all season with their hearts and I am glad they were able show that and have the success we did. To come out with overtime victories on back-to-back nights shows the character of the girls. I couldn’t be happier for them or prouder of them as their coach. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team was in action just once last week, topping Susquehanna Township 2-0 on October 9th. Caleb Spring earned his second clean sheet of the season with a two save effort. FOOTBALL The football team continues to roll toward the postseason with another lopsided victory. This one a 42-0 demolition of Trinity to please the homecoming crown on Saturday, October 13th. The Blue Raiders cranked out 419 rushing yards on their way to a 474-110 edge in total yardage and an easy win. Jose Lopez kicked off the fun with an eight-yard run just 2:21 into the game. Odell Greene, making the first of three trips to the end zone, made it 14-0 nearly six minutes later with a three-yard plunge. Green’s second trip, a 27-yard sprint, wrapped up the first quarter scoring with Middletown up 21-0. Richie Sykes covered 50 yards on his only score of the game, moving the lead to 28-0 with 5:06 remaining in the first half. Greene finished his active first half by hauling in Scott

Ash’s lone TD pass, a five-yarder that made it 35-0 just 26 seconds after the Sykes score. Tim Wagner finished the scoring with an eight-yard TD plunge that set the final at 42-0. Wagner added three catches for 26 yards to his 47 yards rushing but it was the three headed attack of Greene, Lopez and Sykes that powered Middletown to the win. Greene tallied 87 yards and two scores on his six carries, adding 21 yards and

another score on three receptions. Lopez and Sykes both cracked triple digits with Sykes finishing with a team high 114 yards on just four carries while Lopez tallied 103 yards with his 14 carries. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team was in action twice last week, dropping both games to fall to 0-14-1. Milton Hershey handed out a 5-0 loss on October 9th while on October 12th a visit from East Pennsboro resulted in a 7-0 loss. Natasha Manfred finished the week with 19 total saves. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team made the conversion from regular season to

postseason last week with their final regular season meet taking place on October 8th and the Mid-Penn Championship meet going down on October 13th. The Blue Raiders fell to both Mechanicsburg and Central Dauphin East in the final regular season showdown despite Will Brown posting a personal best time of 18:34. Zach Malay was the next Middletown runner to finish, crossing the line at 19:24. Jalen Rowley also posted a personal best time on the day, clocking a 19:30. Tanner Albright (20:47) and Jacob Buffington (21:06) rounded out the top five. Angie Hernandez led the

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition short-staffed Lady Raiders with a time of 24:25. Casey Eckert (26:19) and Bankshita Devkota (38:06) followed Hernandez. The Blue Raiders traveled to

Newville on Saturday October 13th for the Mid-Penn Championship Meet. Brown clocked another personal best time of 18:28.09 to finish 112th in the 200-person field. Rowley (19:37.95)

and Malay (19:50.05) crossed the finish line approximately 13 seconds apart but Rowley was 163rd and Malay 168th. Buffington just missed the 20-minute barrier, finishing with a time of 20:01.59 which placed him 177th. Owen Wealand finished up Middletown’s scorers with a 194th place time of 21:37.46. Hernandez was the second Lady Raider to finish on the girl’s side, posting a 24:42.39 to Jaleena Marrero’s 23:18.31. Marrero’s time was good enough for 110th while Hernandez

finished 149th. Eckert was the final Lady Raiders to participate in the meet, finishing 157th with a time of 25:52.58. VOLLEYBALL The girls’ volleyball team was tripped up twice last week with losses to Big Spring and Trinity bookending the week. In between the Lady Raiders managed to take out Central Dauphin East by a 3-0 count. Katie Knaub collected six assists, two aces and two digs to help Middletown secure wins of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-11. Carley Dupes added five assists,

three kills and one dig to help out. Abbey Spagnolo (11 digs and five aces) and Cassie Ebersole (seven kills and one ace) provided additional support. Middletown nearly had another win last week as they fell to Big Spring by a 3-2 final on Monday. The Lady Raiders opened the match with wins of 25-21 and 26-24 to put the Lady Bulldogs on the brink. Unfortunately, Big Spring was able to fight back with wins of 25-19, 25-20 and 15-12 to steal the win away from Middletown. Courtney Shaffer did a bit of everything in the loss to finish with 13 digs, eight assists, two kills and two blocks. Spagnolo added 13 digs and three

aces while Lani Moore chipped in with 10 digs, five kills and four aces. Ebersole wrapped things up with seven kills and two aces. The Lady Raiders were not able to keep their October 11th clash with Trinity as close with the Lady Shamrocks posting wins of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-16 to collect the 3-0 sweep. Shaffer enjoyed an eight dig, five assist and one kill game while Knaub finished the loss with nine digs and two assists. Alexis Harmon added three digs and two kills with Spagnolo tallying five digs and two aces. Hannah Wilsbach collected a team high 13 digs.

Friends In Action from pg 1 water they desperately need free of charge. This causes people to pause and opens the door for conversation. “The water is so vital to their livelihood that when you offer something like that to them they want to know, ‘Why do you care?’” Johnston relayed. “Our objective is to come in and demonstrate God’s love through the gift of water. We want people to know we’re drilling these wells in the name of Jesus.” Well drilling in West Africa is one of the more than 10 construction projects currently underway by FIA in areas of limited infrastructure in six nations. The community is invited to learn more about the work of FIA at the organization’s 2018 Missions Banquet on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Red Lion Hotel, 4751 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring beef tips, lemon herb chicken, assorted desserts, and more will be served at 6:20 p.m. Guests will hear from keynote speaker Matt Durkee, an FIA field leader for well drilling in West Africa. Other stories from folks working on a water project in Vanuatu will be shared, along with firsthand accounts from the Messiah College student engineering team that is helping with a bridge building project in

Nicaragua. A performance art exhibition, a selfie station, prizes and giveaways, skits, games, and indigenous artifacts from Bolivia, Moldova, and Papua New Guinea will also be part of the event. To purchase tickets or sponsor a table of eight people for the event, interested individuals may contact 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@fiaintl.org by Friday, Oct. 26. Online registration is available at www.fiaintl.org/banquet. With headquarters in Middletown, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom, FIA assists in facilitating and equipping mission work by partnering with Christian believers around the world. Proceeds from the banquet will support the cost of projects like well drilling in West Africa. “I would call it a very positive and encouraging evening. I always hope that it’s refreshing for people to pull away from all the politics and things that we face every day and learn about all that God is doing,” said Johnston. “We love God-sized projects. We like to know when we’re done that it has God’s imprint and fingerprints all over it. You never know which way God’s going to work.”

This September, for only the second time in the 39 years of the Falmouth Goat Races, organizers had to cancel the event at the last minute due to rain. While it was obviously not an outcome Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy PuttHower had hoped for, the incredibly rainy conditions made it necessary. “We want to say thank you to those who helped with the goat races,” PuttHower said. Every year, members of the Falmouth Civic Association send letters to the entire community seeking support for the annual event. All the names of businesses and individuals who have donated are listed in a special section of the event program. Since this year’s event was canceled, Putt-Hower wanted to make sure those who gave still received acknowledgement and recognition for their generosity. On Oct. 1, the old Falmouth Goat Races sign that stood at the corner of Falmouth Road was replaced with a new version thanks to the generosity of local business owners from Conoy Township. “It’s just a big group of people that helped,” PuttHower said. “Our other sign was getting all dilapidated.” Another recent donation included a

$1,000 gift from MetEd’s FirstEnergy Foundation, which Putt-Hower said will most likely be used to add more playground equipment to Governor Stable Park, 101 Governor Stable Road, Bainbridge, where the goat races take place. According to Putt-Hower, when the goat races first started they took place on the baseball field on Governor Stable Road. Fast forward to 2018, and the location is no longer simply an athletic field but a popular park that the association has been able to enhance with a pavilion, bathrooms, and a playground. The Falmouth Goat Races are a longstanding tradition that began with a joke. According to Putt-Hower, a group of oldtimers was sitting around the village store discussing life’s misfortunes and bad luck at the horse race track. Each person owned goats as family pets, and someone made a remark that they might as well bet on the goats instead. That was all it took to spark an idea for Ken Brandt, who got to work placing advertisements for a goat race in Falmouth, listing a phone number for his friend who had made the joke. Still to this day, the Falmouth Goat Races take place on the last Saturday of September, and they continue to draw crowds from across the state and beyond

the borders. In addition to hosting the goat races, the association plans and hosts an Easter egg hunt each spring that Putt-Hower said draws approximately 300 children. It also purchases and distributes flowers to all veterans at the Falmouth Memorial Day Parade. Having to cancel this year’s event means that now the civic association members are brainstorming ways to raise funds for next year’s race. Typically donations are received at the goat races, so without that source of income, members are considering other ideas such as sub sales. Putt-Hower would like to design and sell mugs commemorating the beloved goat races, but at this point details are still in the works. Individuals interested in making a financial donation to the Falmouth Goat Races or the Falmouth Civic Association may call Putt-Hower at 717-367-6801. Pictured on front: Falmouth Civic Association president Nancy Putt-Hower (left) accepted a donation from Karen Baxter of MetEd on behalf of the FirstEnergy Foundation. Fire Company To Observe Halloween R021175

women knelt in a pond to scoop water into eight-gallon containers to carry on their heads. Meanwhile, across the 500foot pond, cattle sauntered through to relieve themselves and an alligator perched on a fallen tree while birds cleaned its teeth. “People walked 2 to 3 miles to find this dirty water. Then they would let it in pots and have to scoop the top off when they used it, because it was that dirty,” explained Johnston. He mentioned that in some areas the water would be teeming with insects to the point that the water did not stop moving. “That was my introduction to how desperately (the people of West Africa) needed clean water and why they get sick,” Johnston said. With such a high percentage of illness being waterborne, he noted that giving people access to clean water gives them a much better chance of survival and health. After the need was presented to and approved by the board, FIA started drilling wells in the Ivory Coast before transitioning to Ghana. Work began in Burkina Faso in 2006, where FIA continues to serve. According to Johnston, many people in West Africa often feel no need to hear about another belief system until they see FIA volunteers drilling

Linglestown Fire Company will be out and about on Trickor-Treat Night on Thursday, Oct. 25, to pass out treats to children.

While traveling around the area, the firefighters will strive to ensure the children celebrating Halloween are having a safe and fun night.

numerous door prizes will also be available. A silent auction will feature at least 20 items to bid on. The set admission fee per ticket will include nine cards per game, 25 games, and five specials (all included in the packet). The auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cash or personal check will be accepted with valid driver’s license for payment. Credit cards will be accepted for the silent auction only. As a returning feature for this year’s event, baskets will be available for sale during intermission, separate from the bingo and from the silent auction activities. All children must pay admission and be accompanied by an adult. The doors and the kitchen will open at 11 a.m., and bingo will begin at 1 p.m. The bingo will be a nonsmoking event, and the facility is handicapped-accessible. For tickets or more information, readers may call 717236-5999. Tickets will also be available at the door. Businesses and individuals who are interested in sponsoring the event may call 717-236-5999 and leave a message. All donations are 100 percent taxdeductible. Harrisburg River Rescue and Emergency Services Inc. is a nonprofit organization. Harrisburg River Rescue and Emergency Services is a self-sufficient, 100 percent volunteer organization that strives to provide community-based, high-quality, cost-effective water rescue and emergency services for the residents of the southcentral Pennsylvania region. Whitehead Foundation. In 2012, Emily became the first child in history to be treated for her cancer using her own re-engineered T cells. After relapsing from her bout with leukemia, Emily entered a clinical trial at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where she underwent this radical new therapy. She almost died and was on life support for two weeks and in a coma, but the doctors at CHOP fought to keep her alive while they addressed the side effects from this new treatment. Emily fought hard too and awoke from her coma on her seventh birthday. Detailed medical tests revealed she was cancer-free. Six years later, Emily’s story continues to inspire people as doctors and researchers have built on Emily’s case and now the same treatment is being used to save the lives of many children and adults. The Food and Drug Administration gave its approval to the new treatment in the summer of 2017 so that it could go nationwide and help save the lives of more children. Since then, it has been used internationally. Today, Emily is a healthy and cancer-free 13-year-old. Her family established the Emily Whitehead Foundation in order to help fund more innovative treatments in fighting childhood cancer. Emily has made appearances on various news shows and

has had the chance to meet numerous celebrities and government leaders, including visiting the White House in 2016 to meet President Barack Obama. In addition to supporting the Emily Whitehead Foundation, the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler will also benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central

Pennsylvania, which has a long history of funding successful treatments for pediatric cancer - including being a major force in the field of immuno-therapy. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or contact race director Tom Garrett at 717-315-7228 or tgarrett7@msn.com.

Chatter Hi, everyone! Ooooooh, I’m so excited! And I just can’t hide it! I’m about to lose control and I think I like it! (In the words of the great Pointer Sisters!) I love this time of the year! I like the build up to the holiday season almost more than the actual season! Each week just gets better and better! Keepers I grew up in the ’50s/’60s/’70s with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, T-shirt, and a hat, and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, the screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, leftovers eating, renewing‌ I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there’d always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer’s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any more. Sometimes, what we care about most

gets all used up and goes away ... never to return. So ... while we have it ... it’s best we love it ... and care for it ... and fix it when it’s broken ... and heal it when it’s sick. This is true ... for marriage ... and old cars ... and children with bad report cards ... dogs and cats with bad hips ... and aging parents ... and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special... And so, we keep them close! BFB This week’s Big Fat Belated birthday wish goes out to my brother-in-law! Dave Vandegrift of Lower Swatara Township had his cake-day on Oct. 13 and I missed it! Sorry, Dave! I hope your whole year is full of everything wonderful! Hugs! Random Thought Be the woman who fixes another woman’s crown, without telling the world that it was crooked. Recipe of the Week Halloween Fudge Ingredients: 2 packages Baker’s white chocolate, chopped 3/4 cup canned sweetened condensed milk yellow and red food coloring (10 drops yellow and 2 drops red) 12 fun-size candy bars (your choice), about 1 cup, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon Halloween sprinkles Instructions: 1. Line 8-inch square pan with foil, with ends

of foil extending over sides. 2. Microwave white chocolate and milk in microwaveable bowl on medium 2 to 3 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted; stir until completely melted. 3. Stir in food coloring until well blended. 4. Spread half the white chocolate mixture onto bottom of prepared pan. Sprinkle with chopped chocolate bars. Immediately top with remaining white chocolate mixture and sprinkles. Refrigerate 2 hours or until firm. 5. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into squares. Tip of the Week Freshen up wilted leafy vegetables by soaking them in 2 cups cold water mixed with 1 tablespoon vinegar for about 10 minutes. Rinse, dry, and serve! Joke of the Week It was autumn, and the Native Americans on the remote reservation asked their new chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a Native American chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the heck the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect wood so they would be prepared for it. But also being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is the coming winter going to be cold? “It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold indeed, the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. One week later he called the National Weather Service again. “Is it going to be a very cold winter? he asked. “Yes, the man at National Weather Service again replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter. The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later he called the National Weather Service again. “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold? “Absolutely, the man replied. “It looks like it’s going to be one of the coldest winters ever. “How can you be so sure? the chief asked. The weatherman replied, “The Native Americans are collecting firewood like crazy. Fact of the Week The smell of Crayola crayons is so familiar that it is one of the twenty most recognizable scents to American adults (ranking up there with peanut butter and coffee). The smell is so soothing to Americans that sniffing the crayons has been shown to lower blood pressure! Thank You Thanks to Marla Flynn of Royalton for the Random Thought! I love that. Thanks to Brandi Moyer McLaughlin of Royalton for the Food for Thought! Such true words. Food for Thought Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder. -Rumi Have a great week, everybody!
