Each participating older student is paired with a younger student from another class and spends time throughout the year practicing reading to his or her buddy. On occasion, Book Buddies also participate in activities in other subject areas. On Oct. 25, Kate Korsak’s thirdgraders and Janelle Dukes’ firstgraders at Kunkel Elementary participated in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activity together. Londonderry Township Boy Scout Troop 97 hosted Bainbridge Troop 162 to participate in the international Boy Scout Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA). JOTA allows Scouts to connect from the United States and overseas by using amateur radios. This growing annual event involved more than 1.5 million Scout participants from more than 160 countries in 2017. With the guidance of Tim Lehman, Steve Hensley, and Karl Gardener, the Scouts went through a series of interactive stations. They were taught basic principles of radio operation and learned how to build radio antennas by soldering wire onto cables. They learned how to find transmitters with butterfly antennas. The Scouts

made their own tripods from which they hung their antennas, since tripods can provide better radio reception when positioned properly. The Scouts used the transmitters to contact fellow Scouts as far away as South Carolina and even communicated with Scouts in the Netherlands. Next year, they plan to build their own tower out of poles in order to get even better reception with their antennas. Communication during JOTA typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication take place, such as video communication and digital communication, which is much like sending a message on a smart- Scoutmaster Tom D’Auria (right) teaches Xavier phone but transmitted by radio Derr about circuit boards as Scouts earned See Scout Troops pg 2 their electronics merit badge.

Middletown Dominates in District Semifinals

and raced 71 yards for Middletown’s lone non-Lopez TD of the game. A missed PAT attempt made it 34-0 and kept the mercy rule running clock on ice for a few more minutes. Yet another quick Wyomissing three and out gave the ball back to Middletown for another crack at a mercy rule running clock. The Blue Raiders would not falter this time as Lopez turned a bad snap into his fourth rushing touchdown of the game, this one an 80-yard score that made 41-0 and capped his 208-yard game. With the game in hand thanks to a 41-point lead, a running clock and only 14 minutes of game time remaining, Myers went to his bench to close out the contest. That allowed Wyomissing to find enough footing to produce all four of their first downs while taking their offensive output from the negative (-28 yards) to their final tally of 16 yards. That production, however limited, also led to Wyomissing’s only visit to the end zone, a one-yard Jason Gartner score with 3:37 remaining in the game. Up next for Middletown is a trip to Lebanon where the Blue Raiders will tangle with Bermudian Springs in an attempt to win their third straight District 3-3A title. Kickoff is set for 7pm on Friday November 16th at Cedar Crest High School.

no points but as they would all night the Middletown defense stepped up. The Blue Raiders forced a quick three and out then enjoyed a bad Wyomissing punt that put another score just 36 yards away. A 22-yard Ash to Joseph competition covered most of that gap but it was a Lopez plunge that put points on the board. The five-yard score came with just over two minutes remaining in the opening frame and gave Middletown a 14-0 lead. The teams traded possessions through the tail end of the first and most of the second quarter with little to show for the efforts. In fact, when Middletown fielded their third punt of the second quarter at their own 49-yard line with just 22 seconds remaining in the half, most figured a quick kneel down would send the game to intermission with the Blue Raiders up by just two scores. Myers and his squad had different ideas even after a Lopez rush was stuffed for no gain on first down. The Blue Raiders were undeterred, calling timeout with three ticks remaining on the clock and the end zone still 51 yards away. Myers dialed up a screen pass towards the home sideline with Ash soft tossing to Lopez who took care of those 51 yards in a hurry. “We knew there was only a couple of seconds left on the clock and we wanted to see how far we could get

Total domination. There simply is no other way to describe Middletown’s 41-6 triumph over Wyomissing in their District 3-3A semifinal clash last Friday, November 9th. Despite a rainsoaked evening turning Middletown’s War Memorial Field into a pit of mud, the Blue Raiders managed to rack up 497 yards of offense while holding the Spartans to a measly 16. “Our defensive coaches grind as hard as anybody. They put a lot of time in, looking at stuff and getting our kids ready, said head coach Brett Myers. “There is pressure applied all week in practice on the defensive side of the ball. We put them in a lot of bad case scenarios during the week and they responded. A lot of these guys have experience, they’ve been through a lot. That preparation was on full display as 22 of the Spartans 37 offensive snaps went for no gain or a loss of yards. That left Wyomissing with a paltry 0.43 yards per play average with eight of their 10 drives ending in a punt. Add in three sacks plus a first quarter Chis Joseph interception and you get a game that never felt as close as the score. Middletown’s offense handled their part of the domination behind a stellar game from Jose Lopez. The junior dynamo accounted for 259 of Middletown’s 497 yards while scoring five of their six touchdowns. The dominance was on display on the game’s opening drive with Lopez taking his third carry and the team’s fifth play to the house. “A Classic “Our New Family Tradition! The score saw Lopez bust through the right side of the line and race 48-yards for a 7-0 lead just 2:23 into the game. Wyomissing’s ensuing drive lasted all of three plays and spanned just two minutes but Middletown was unable to capitalize on the failed Spartan possession. Making that failure even worse was a bigtime completion on the Blue Raiders’ first snap of that possession. Scott Ash picked up 84 of his 192 yards with a single completion to Tim Wagner but Wyomissing was able to push Wagner out of bounds at the four-yard line. n at The Amish Experience Theaterm A few failed rushes, a penalty and two ’”‡•‡–• incomplete passes ended the drive with

down the field, said Lopez before dishing out some praise. “My lineman did everything really, I just ran, ran behind them. They had some real nice blocks. Those nice blocks coupled with nice running from Lopez made it a 21-0 game at the break. The Blue Raiders, for all intents and purposes, put the game away in the first four minutes of the second half. An onside kick to start the second half caught the Spartans off guard while Middletown’s recovery of that kick further deflated the Wyomissing side. Lopez covered 28 of the 46 yards needed to convert the drive to points with the payoff coming on a twoyard plunge with 8:08 showing on the third quarter clock. Another quick Wyomissing three and out put the ball back in Middletown’s hands with just under six minutes remaining in the frame. The drive started poorly as a bad first down snap pushed the Blue Raiders back to the Spartan 29-yard line. That proved to be an easily overcome obstacle for Middletown as Richie Sykes took a second down handoff

Hi, everyone! Here we are in the middle of November already! Next week is Thanksgiving! I’m so excited! I am doing the family Thanksgiving dinner this year. I love when my family gets together to celebrate. Life flies by so fast, I want to spend as much time with my loved ones as possible. Plus I want to be a part of my granddaughter’s, nieces’, and nephews’ memories when I go on before them. My grandparents and parents sure made a lot of memories for me to reflect on as I get older, so I want my younger family members to also have cherished memories. So this is one of the reasons why the holiday season is so important to me. I’m so thankful for my family. Be Thankful For Everything Imagine that starting tomorrow the only things that remain in your life are the things for which you thank God: The alarm didn’t go off! Where did the alarm clock go? Oh, I forgot to thank God for it. Well, I’ll have to be late for work. Work? Did I thank God for my job? Oh well, I guess I won’t have to worry about being late for work; I don’t have a job any more. But I did thank God for my meals. At least I won’t go hungry. What’s this in the mail? An eviction notice! Oh no! I forgot to thank God for my home! And the telephone has been quiet all morning. Oops, no telephone. Well, I’ll use a pay phone. Where’s my car? What happened to my pocket change? Who was I going to call anyway? Oh, I’ve never thanked the Lord for my friends. Well, at least I have my health. Have I ever thanked the Lord for my health? There are so many things in this life for which we fail to thank the Lord. Your talents, your family and friends, the beauty of creation, all of these and much more are gifts from your heavenly Father. Today ask God to give you a thankful heart and acknowledge your dependence on His good gifts. Happy Birthdays Happy birthday to Fran Ierley of Londonderry Township! Her cake-day is Nov. 14. I hope your day is as nice to you as you are to others, Fran! Happy birthday to Dawn Noon of Middletown! Her cake-day is Nov. 15. I hope your day is beautiful like you, Dawn! Love ya!

The current HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, auctioneering class, instructed by Charlene Caple, will hold its Student Auction on Sunday, Nov. 18, at Cordier Auctions and Appraisals, 1500 Paxton St., Harrisburg. The auction is open to the public. A preview will begin at 11 a.m., and the auction will begin at noon. The student auction is the climax of the semester, providing students with experience in all facets of auction operation. Students had their first experience on the auction block selling apple pies at the National Apple Harvest Festival in Biglerville in October. That auction raised more than $2,000 through the sale of 11 pies. Proceeds went toward Hospice of Central Pennsylvania. Many of the bidders were former auctioneering students themselves. On Nov. 18, the class will sell a variety of items collected by students for the occasion. Lots will include Christmas tree bears, which are being sold to benefit the York Polar Bears hockey team. Last year, the class raised $2,100 to support the team, which gives youths with physical or

intellectual disabilities a way to learn and experience the sport of ice hockey. Students will also bring a variety of other collectibles to the block, including an 1853 $1 gold coin, comic books, toys, and sterling silver jewelry. David Cordier, founder/owner of Cordier Auctions and Appraisals, is an alumnus of the HACC auctioneering program. This year, the students include a mother and daughter, as well as a father and son. The group includes students from across the state, ranging in age from their early 20s to late 50s. For more information about the auction, readers may visit www.CordierAuction.com or call 717-731-8662. Pictured on front: The auc-

Using a food processor, mix pepperoni with a few sprigs of fresh rosemary and blend until it forms a pastelike consistency. Mix the pepperoni paste

with some softened butter and carefully rub in into the turkey trying to get under the turkey’s skin as much as possible without pulling it off. Bake turkey as normal. Fact of the Week The name hippopotamus comes directly from two Greek words - hippos and potamos - and literally means “river horse. Cool! I want a river horse for Christmas! Joke of the Week The strong young man at the construction site was bragging that he could out do anyone in a feat of strength. He made a special case of making fun of one of the older workmen. After several minutes, the older worker had enough. “Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is? he said. “I will bet $100 that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that out-building that you won’t be able to wheel back. “You’re on, old man, the braggart replied. “Let’s see what you got! The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding to the young man, he said, “All right, dummy, get in. (Don’t mess with old men; they’re smarter than you think!) Thank You Thanks to my buddy Francis Kasper for the joke! Old men are awesome! Food For Thought As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn’t supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it’s harder every time. You’ll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You’ll fight with your best friend. You’ll blame a new love for things an old one did. You’ll cry because time is passing too fast, and you’ll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you’ve never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you’ll never get back. Don’t be afraid that your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin.

Have a great week, everybody!

Orchestra To Present “Jazz Voices”

STEM Activity from pg 1

Third-graders Savannah Scheideler (left) and Rachael Symonies counted pumpkin seeds.

Nathan Mulkerin, a first-grader, looked for seeds in the goo from a pumpkin.

seeds. After graphing their predictions, students worked with their buddies to gut their pumpkins and dig for seeds in the slimy goo. For ease of counting, students grouped the seeds into piles of 10, which also gave them the opportunity to practice the skill of counting by 10s. Students were surprised to discover that the size of the pumpkin did not have a direct effect on the number of

its seeds. Students found that two small pumpkins had more seeds than a much larger one. Teachers explained that there are many variables that affect the number of seeds in a pumpkin, including genetics, the amount of time on the vine, weather factors, and farming practices. The students also discovered that pumpkin goo is a great skin moisturizer.

Community Place Grand Opening Set For Nov. 17 By Chelsea Peifer

A grand opening celebration for Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. Area residents are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony, enjoy light refreshments, and take self-guided tours of the remodeled building. Formerly owned by St. Peter Parochial School, the two-story brick building was converted into a centralized space for numerous social service providers in the Elizabethtown area, thanks to a collaboration between the United Churches of Elizabethtown Area and various community members, organizations, and businesses. United Churches president Derrick McDonald will speak at the grand opening celebration, and other local dignitaries have been invited. According to Doug Lamb of United Churches, a capital campaign for the project began in May, the property was purchased in July, and remodeling began in August. Generous donations of time, finances, and labor made the project possible, and Lamb noted that more than 300 people came through the building at some point in the remodeling process to help with everything from electrical wiring to painting and other trades. “One of the exciting things about (the grand opening) will be all the volunteers having a chance to see what it looks like now,” remarked Lamb. The lower level of the building is now home to Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, which moved into the space in late October. “The clients love it,” Lamb relayed. “It’s a wide-open space and a lot easier to use.” Formerly located on Market Street, the food pantry is open on Wednesdays to Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment only. More information on how to receive services or volunteer is available by contacting 717361-8149 or etowncupboard@gmail.com.

The upstairs of Community Place includes a community conference room along with office space for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). Project leaders had hoped to use the space for as many social service programs as possible, and that goal is already rolling along. Tabor Community Services will offer free financial counseling to anyone by appointment at Community Place. Transfer General Education Development (GED) classes will be offered by United Churches in the community conference room, and that space will also be available for various groups in the community to use by appointment. Plus, Bear Bags, weekend meal bags offered to Elizabethtown Area School District students in need, will be assembled at Community Place. The house adjacent to the large brick building will be used as the winter shelter operated by ECHOS. Lamb noted that several upgrades still need to be made to that facility, but the main building is about 90 percent complete. “We still have ongoing projects, but it’s well on its way,” summarized Lamb. Phase two of Community Place on Washington includes adding a building to the property to allow space for additional social services. Lamb said that several local groups have expressed interest in that space. “That’s a dream,” Lamb stated. “Our capital campaign is underway, and we’re looking for people to partner with us for that.” Ideally, Lamb would like to get things in motion to break ground for that new building in the summer of 2019. To learn more about or make a donation toward Community Place on Washington, interested individuals may visit https://communityplaceetown.org/.
