District Provides Special Learning Activities Middletown Area School District elementary schools are provided with a variety of teaching resources through Title I funding. Reading specialists at each school have a resource library full of games, activities, and manipulatives that children may use to practice a wide scope of reading skills. Students can sign out games

for two weeks and select a new one when they return the borrowed item. By sending resources home, the district aims to help parents stay informed of what skills their child is learning at school and thereby

strengthen the partnership between home and school. The kindergarten teachers at Fink have taken this idea of partnering with parents a step further. April Hughes and Anastasia Cerritelli have created their See Learning Activities pg 12

Coming Together For Christmas TreE-town By Chelsea Peifer

This year, the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce (EACC) is spearheading a collaboration between numerous local businesses and organizations to focus holiday efforts under one brand: Christmas TreE-town. EACC executive director Heather Hohenwarter said that the initiative will highlight the many events that take place in the Elizabethtown area during the holiday season. “The idea behind Christmas TreE-town was to curate the many existing events under one banner,” Hohenwarter explained. “It made sense to create a central source of information for families racing to check things off their hectic holiday to-do list, like ‘visit Santa,’ ‘see Christmas lights,’ and ‘buy teachers gifts.’ So why not do it all in charming Elizabethtown?” A website for Christmas TreE-town, www.christmastree-town.com, recently See Christmas TreE-town pg 4

Blue Raiders Claim 3rd Straight District 3 Crown by Eric Pyles

You can change the venue and you can even change the opponent but for the third straight year the result remained the same. The venue change came with District 3’s decision to move football title games away from Hershey Park Stadium to a high school facility to give the game more of a regular season feel. Cedar Crest High School’s Earl Boltz Stadium earned the nod for this year’s November 17th 3A title bout between Middletown and Bermudian Springs, where the Blue Raiders earned their third straight 3A crown with a 42-20 victory over the Eagles. “It’s great, it’s great for the kids. They have come a long way. This group lost three games their freshman year of high school football so to come out and be leaders on a district championship team, that is great for them,” said head coach Brett Myers. As was the case during Middletown’s semifinal victory over Wyomissing last week, the Blue Raiders used a Jose Lopez powered rushing attack coupled with a dominating defense to cruise to a comfortable win. This week Lopez made four trips to the end zone while accounting for 210 of Middletown’s 289 rushing yards. The defense racked up 10 tackles for loss and picked off three passes, returning one for a second quarter score, all of which help limit Bermudian to 269 total yards and pushed Middletown to a 22-point championship earning win. Despite the outcome Middletown was a bit shaky in the early stages of the game. A stalled game opening drive for the Blue Raiders put the Eagles in position to strike first. Bermudian responded with a 12-play drive that reached the Middletown 19-yard line and appeared headed for the end zone. That changed with a botched Bermudian handoff that was followed by Cole Senior dropping Chase Dull for a three-yard sack. The resulting third and long attempt was stuffed, leaving Bermudian to attempt a 43-yard field goal that sailed wide right, leaving it a 0-0 game. Middletown did not waste the second opportunity to put the first points

This one covered 40 yards and gave Middletown a 7-0 lead with 2:07 remaining in the opening quarter. The energized Blue Raider defense forced a quick three and out to put the ball back into Lopez’s hands. The junior standout did not disappoint, needing just four plays and 69 seconds to make it a

Lopez took over from there, covering the final 52 yards on three carries, including his 45-yard jaunt just 21 seconds into the second quarter that made it a two-score game. COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition Middletown with 10:15 remaining in the half. The Blue Raiders turned to their passing game to push the lead to 21-0. Scott Ash, who finished with 136 yards for the game, went two for two on the scoring drive with Lamar Ventura turning a short second completion into a long touchdown. Ventura took a simple screen pass 73 yards for a score after some nifty moves that included a broken tackle around his own 40-yard line. Bermudian Springs was able to crack Middletown’s defensive dominance on their next drive, making it a two-score game and putting the Eagles within striking distance for a short while. Dull opened the drive with a 33-yard completion to Kolt Byers that set the Eagles up with first and goal from the four-yard line. Three plays later, Dull squirted through the bodies for a one-yard score. A missed extra point made it 21-6 with 7:44 remaining in the opening half. An exchange of punts by the teams setup Middletown’s next defensive strike. The Blue Raiders’ second punt of the sequence gave Bermudian the ball at their own 22-yard line. On their first snap the Eagles took a deep shot but Chris Joseph came away with the ball, scampering 43-yards for a 28-6 lead. The interception turned touchdown came with just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter and proved to be the final points of the half. Middletown managed to force another one play, one turnover drive from Bermudian to kick off the second half but the Blue Raider offense was unable to capitalize on the fumble recovery leaving it a 28-6 game. The Eagles changed that on the second play after forcing Middletown’s turn over on downs. Dull hit a streaking Domenic Florea who outran everyone on his way to an 80-yard score. The successful extra point made it 28-13 with 9:02 showing on the third quarter clock. Middletown turned to Lopez for the counter and once again he answered. Six carries and 45 yards later Lopez was in the end zone for the third time, this one giving Middletown a 35-13 lead near the midway point of the third quarter. Another exchange of punts provided

the segue to Middletown’s next big play. This one took place early in the fourth quarter and came in the form of Joseph’s second interception of the game. Joseph was unable to make it two-for-two with a second defensive touchdown but his return did give Middletown the ball deep in Bermudian territory. Lopez needed one play and three seconds to cover the 11 yards that gave the Blue Raiders a 42-13 cushion with 9:18 left in the game. Bermudian managed one final scoring drive that ended with Dull hitting JJ Talley for a 31-yard score but that

only reduced the final margin to 42-20. Up next for Middletown is a PIAA-3A quarterfinal showdown with last year’s PIAA semifinal opponent, Photo by Cheri Sine Conwell Egan. Chatter Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Some Thanksgiving Words of Wisdom Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgivings. Gratitude helps us to see what is there instead of what isn’t. It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude. It’s gratitude that brings us happiness. To live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven. Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. Trade your expectations for appreciation and your whole world changes in an instant. Gratitude turns what we have into enough. Sincerely giving thanks not only helps us recognize our blessings, but it also unlocks the doors of heaven. Life is full of give and takes. Give thanks and take nothing for granted. Be kind, be thoughtful, be genuine. But most of all BE THANKFUL. A Thanksgiving Forecast... Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder. During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy. A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator. Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone. Be Thankful! Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don’t know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character. Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary, because it means you’ve made a difference. It’s easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings. (Author Unknown) Black November When I was a young turkey, new to the coop, My big brother Mike took me out on the stoop, Then he sat me down, and he spoke real slow, And he told me there was something that I had to know; His look and his tone I will always remember, When he told me of the horrors of ... Black November; “Come about August, now listen to me, Each day you’ll get six meals instead of just three, And soon you’ll be thick, where once you were thin, And you’ll grow a big rubbery thing under your chin; And then one morning, when you’re warm in your bed, In’ll burst the farmer’s wife, and hack off your head; Then she’ll pluck out all your feathers so you’re bald ‘n pink, And scoop out all your insides and leave ya lyin’ in the sink; And then comes the worst part,” he said not bluffing,

Shop Small Event Set The ninth annual Small Business Saturday will take place on Saturday, Nov. 24. Dedicated to supporting the diverse range of local businesses that create jobs, boost the economy, and enhance neighborhoods around the country, Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: getting more customers. Shop Small is a nationwide movement to

support small, independent businesses and call attention to the valuable and distinct contributions they make to their communities and the economy. Shop Small celebrates small businesses ranging from retail stores and restaurants to fitness studios and salons, and everything in between. The Shop Small movement was spurred by the widespread participation in Small Business Saturday. To learn more, readers may visit www.shopsmall.com.

“She’ll spread your cheeks and pack your rear with stuffing.” Well, the rest of his words were too grim to repeat, I sat on the stoop like a winged piece of meat, And decided on the spot that to avoid being cooked, I’d have to lay low and remain overlooked; I began a new diet of nuts and granola, High-roughage salads, juice and diet cola; And as they ate pastries, chocolates and crepes, I stayed in my room doing Jane Fonda tapes; I maintained my weight of two pounds and a half, And tried not to notice when the bigger birds laughed; But ’twas I who was laughing, under my breath, As they chomped and they chewed, ever closer to death; And sure enough when Black November rolled around, I was the last turkey left in the entire compound; So now I’m a pet in the farmer’s wife’s lap; I haven’t a worry! So I eat and I nap; She held me today, while sewing and humming, And smiled at me and said: “Christmas is coming...” Happy Birthdays First for this week, a special happy birthday to my wonderful aunt Leslie Herneisey of Londonderry Township! We all wish you many more years of a blissful life together! I love you both! Threads of Hope Are you in need or do you know anyone in need? Threads of Hope has a large selection of clothing and shoes available. There is also a limited selection of Christmas items. The monthly giveaway will be on Black Friday, Nov. 23, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church at 64 Ann St. in Middletown. Christmas Bazaar St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 121 N. Spring St., Middletown, will hold a Christmas bazaar and indoor yard sale on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The kitchen will be open for breakfast snacks, lunch, and bake sale items. In addition to yard sale items, there will be a Christmas shop and a silent auction. Everyone is welcome. Random Thought Extended family Thanksgiving gatherings are like sitting around with living, breathing forwarded emails. Recipe of the Week Leftover Turkey Casserole Ingredients: 1 (6 ounce) package dry bread stuffing mix 1 (16 ounce) container sour cream 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of celery soup 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix 2 (14.5 ounce) cans French-style green beans, drained 2 cups cooked, chopped turkey meat Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Prepare stuffing according to package directions. 3. In a medium bowl, mix the sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery soup and dry onion soup mix. 4. Spread the green beans in a 9by-13-inch dish. Top with a layer of turkey. Pour the soup mixture over the turkey. Top with stuffing. 5. Bake in the preheated oven 30 minutes, or until browned and bubbly. Tip of the Week Use your coolers as warming drawers! Line the cooler with aluminum foil, add some folded towels and fill it with hot dishes as they come out of the oven. (But use common sense here and don’t melt your cooler.) Food for Thought Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; Give thanks to Him and praise His name. -Psalm 100:4

Have a great week, everybody!
