Raiders Earn Third Championship Berth by Eric Pyles

tangle while the previous two meetings were quarterfinal tilts. If you are a fan of Middletown “They have some really good football, rest assured, you are not players and a good program and stuck in a sports themed version of Bill they play really hard. Today we Murray’s Groundhog Day nor are you were luckily enough to come out on experiencing Deja Vu. Instead your the other side of it,” said head coach feelings of familiarity stem from the Brett Myers. “Don’t want to take fact that your Middletown Blue anything away from them because Raiders are making their third straight they played extremely well, they trip to the PIAA-3A title game. could have quit but they did a great job. We just have some guys that have been in this situation before and I think that helped today.” The familiarity in high pressure situations worked in Middletown’s favor nearly from the opening whistle. Scranton won the coin toss and elected to receive which set the stage for a Blue Raider defense that was ready for the spot light. A quick Cavalier three and out, that produced just one-yard, setup what should have been a routine punt from Scranton. Only the snap was not routine and sailed over the punters head and into the end zone. Adonis Taveras beat Scranton’s Aiec Buttner to the ball for a 7-0 lead just 32 seconds Photo by Cheri Sine into the contest. The junior standout picked up the first of two scores on his fifth carry, this one covering 59 yards, to give Middletown a 14-0 lead after only eight and a half minutes. The Blue Raider defense continued their first half dominance, forcing another three and out, but the offense was unable to capitalize thanks to a few miscues. Those miscues came after the drive started with a 52-yard Scott Ash to Lamar Ventura completion that took Middletown from their own 26 to the Cavalier 22. A bad hand off, coupled with an illegal procedure penalty, killed the drive, which ended with a Photo by Cheri Sine missed 33-yard field goal attempt, Middletown’s Adonis Taveras takes on Scranton Prep blocker leaving the game 14-0 early in the Daniel Belardi during last Friday’s PIAA semifinal meeting at second quarter. Despite the setback, the defense Middletown picked up their invite to Hershey Park Stadium for the title bout opposite Aliquippa courtesy of a 35-21 victory over Scranton Prep last Friday. The two-touchdown win over the Cavaliers marks the third straight year the Blue Raiders have ended Scranton’s season on the turf of Bethlehem’s BASD Stadium, although this year was a semifinal

continued to answer the call by forcing the first of four turnovers on downs. This time Scranton was able to piece together a small drive totaling 52 yards before the Blue Raiders flexed their muscle but the result was still a scoreless possession for the Cavaliers. A holding penalty stalled Middletown’s ensuing drive but once again the Blue Raider defense was up to the challenge, forcing another three and out that was highlighted by Odell Green’s sack. With the first half clock winding down, Middletown used their quick tempo offense to march down the field for a 21-0 halftime lead. A few Lopez runs got the drive rolling but it was the passing game that stretched the lead. Ash hit Richie Sykes on back-to-back plays for a quick 45 yards. The final completion was a 23-yard TD and came with 57-seconds remaining before intermission. Scranton’s decision to receive the game’s opening kick provided

advantage of that opportunity on the second play of the half. Sykes broke free from a Scranton tackler and raced 60 yards for a 28-0 lead just 46 seconds into the third quarter. “High school football is a game of momentum and we seemed to have a lot of that at different times,” said Myers. “ They obviously got a little bit of a swing there and we have to improve on finishing games for next week but momentum dictates the game and we had it most of the game.” Middletown’s defense continued to shine, keeping it a 28-0 game by ending two straight Scranton drives with fourth down stops. Unfortunately, the offense began to sputter, picking up only eight yards in between the two Cavalier turnovers on downs. The offensive struggles continued on Middletown’s next drive of the third stanza which ended on a fumbled snap in Cavalier territory. Scranton wasted no time capitalizing on the Middletown mistake as standout QB Leo O’Boyle hit Michael Grady for a 70-yard score on the first play

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Middletown Edition from scrimmage, making it a 28-7 game with 27-seconds remaining in the third. Another stalled Blue Raider drive chewed up the final few seconds of the third as well as the first few seconds of the fourth while moving the Middletown fans closer to the edge of their seats. A solid punt by Avery Williams backed Scranton up and put the Cavaliers 73 yards from the end zone. O’Boyle did lead his squad down the field but the 12-play scoring drive chewed up valuable clock, giving the senior’s six-yard TD pass to Brendan Colleran that came with 7:47 remaining in the game a bit of a hollow feel. Any chance the Cavaliers had of a comeback ended on Middletown’s ensuing drive. Despite the Blue Raiders’ tallying just 41 yards and a turnover on their previous three possessions, they only needed two plays on this drive to secure their spot in the PIAA-3A title game. After a first down run from Green that

went for no gain, Lopez put the game on ice with an 80-yard scamper that highlighted his 221-yard game and made it 35-14 with just under seven minutes left to play. O’Boyle managed to lead Scranton to one final score, this one an eightyard strike to Colleran, but it came with a mere 48 seconds remaining in the game and only served to set the final at 35-21. As for the match-up with Aliquippa, the Blue Raiders are hoping this is the year they can clear the District 7 hurdle as all three of Middletown’s title game opponents Photo by Cheri Sine have hailed from the same district. The first title game appearance, Ethan Miller blocks on an extra point during the Raiders’ 35-21 back in 2016, ended with the Blue PIAA 3A victory over Scranton Prep last Friday in Bethlehem. Raiders holding silver medals while Beaver Falls hoisted the championship hardware. In 2017 it was Quaker Valley taking home the state hardware. The Blue Raiders look to reverse the trend on December 8th with kick off for the 2018 title game set for high noon in Hershey.

has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they were made with skim milk or whole milk. If it is skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

melted and mixture is well blended. Stir in vanilla. 3. Pour into prepared pan; spread to cover bottom of pan. Cool 5 minutes. Top with sprinkles. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan. Cut into 40 small Christmas tree shapes with 1-inch cookie cutter. Tip of the Week Don’t struggle with dough sticking to your rolling pin. Instead, roll out your dough between two sheets of waxed paper. This method will eliminate the sticking problem. Fact of the Week Santa Claus! Everyone who knows about him probably also knows at least one other of his nicknames, including Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, Pere Noel and, of course, Jolly Old Saint Nick. That last one is not just a nickname. The mythical figure of Santa Claus has its roots with Saint Nicholas, an actual saint. Bilingual Christmas celebrators may also know that Santa means saint in Spanish. Saint Nicholas was a Greek bishop living in what is now Turkey. He was a devout man, but also very rich because, as legend tells, he inherited large sums of money when his parents died while he was young. Nicholas did not flaunt his wealth or keep it for himself. Instead, he was very generous with it. The legend goes that he once dropped bags of gold down a chimney to a poor but religious family that could not afford dowries (money paid to the groom) for its daughters, who therefore could not get married. These bags of gold accidentally landed in stockings that were hung by the fire to dry, and a tradition was born that holds up centuries later. Joke of the Week I heard some strange chatter from the spice cupboard mid-December. But it was just the season’s greetings. Food for Thought Christmas Gift Suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect. - Oren Arnold Happy Holidays, everyone!

Merry Christmas month, everyone! Oh, please let this month go slow! I want to savor every last minute. I want to listen to Christmas carols and look at all the beautiful Christmas lights! I want to give gifts and receive gifts (not gonna lie)! I want to bake cookies and make fudge and candies! But, most of all, I want to feel the love of Christmastime and reflect upon the real meaning of Christmas. Holiday Eating Tips 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can - and quickly. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you will need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape of Santa, position yourself near them and do not budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. The are like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you are never going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it is loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards. 10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you have not been paying attention. Reread these tips; start over, but hurry. January is just around the corner. Remember this motto to live by: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather the goal should be to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, eggnog in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “Woohoo! What a ride!”
