When high school directors consider fall plays, their minds may turn to the possibility of staging a show with a healthy dose of suspense. “I was looking for a murder mystery comedy,” said Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director. “Murder’s in the Heir” by Billy St. John met Wagner’s qualification, but the show also includes a chance for audience members to participate and help determine the outcome of the play. “It’s kind of like the game Clue, where every (character) has a weapon and a motive,” said Wagner of the drama, which will be staged at the school, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15 through 17. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. each evening. See LCHS Play pg 6
The cast of the Lancaster Catholic High School production of “Murder’s in the Heir” has been practicing the interactive whodunit for presentations on Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 15 through 17, at the school.

Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. The light show will feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. Poole Forge from pg 1 Santa, as well as photo opportunities on Sunday afternoons. Organizers envision the new marketplace as a small Christmas village featuring decorated sheds made by local builders. “Vendors will rent space in the sheds,” explained Vicki Owens. Maryann Oestreich added that a variety of local crafters and artisans have been invited to display their wares. Among the vendors who have signed on to take part are those who make horseradish, lemon curd, jellies, pottery, and repurposed clothing. Organizers hope to have a maker of toys on-site as well.
Local neighbors will bring homemade refreshments such as cookies to be served in the West Tenant House. A Chinese auction including items donated by local vendors will be held in the same location. Live music during the event will be provided by a group of area flute players, a brass group made up of Garden Spot High School students, and other local musicians. Owens has lined up a number of area businesses to fill the mansion and basement of the Paymaster’s House with specially decorated themed trees. “Some highlight their businesses, and some just do something really beautiful,” explained
Ekdahl. Oestreich said many of the beautified trees are unique. Among the many businesses that will decorate this year will be printers, a builder, a landscaper, window and door sellers, two savings banks, a design and interior decorating business, a therapeutic massage practice, an audiologist, an optometrist, an insurance agency, a personal trainer, and a local publisher. A local dentist who usually decorates the tree with teeth will participate this year, as will a glass blowing shop from St. Peter’s Village. Nonprofit organizations that will take part include Laurel Dance Studio, the Poole Forge Garden Club, the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society, and more. Poole Forge features a renovated 18thcentury Welsh Ironmaster’s Mansion, so

after work on the opera began. The opera was inspired by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.” The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the piece. The piece also features

Navarro performed two seasons ago with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of one of his other works. Concert from pg 1 Things,” a free concert in the round featuring Jamanis on violin and Veri on piano, will be held at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Main Auditorium. The idea for the title came about when Tony Brill, LCHS director of Fine and Performing Arts, explained to Jamanis and Veri that they would be in the center of the audience on the auditorium floor. “It will be a much more intimate concert, and I love that because there’s more audience interaction,” said Jamanis. Veri likened the setting to inviting the audience into the family living room, and she compared the musical selections to a buffet dinner. “This is special (because it is like) putting all the things you love to eat on the menu, and whether they go together or not, we are (serving them),” she said. Mother and son noted that choosing the music for the evening was like taking a walk down memory lane together. “We will be doing Beethoven’s ‘Spring Sonata,’” said Jamanis, noting, “I grew up listening to that in the living room at home.” Jamanis and his mother recalled how a family friend and his wife would join them for dinner and afterward the friend would play the piece with Veri. “I remember this as a kid (under) 8 years old,” Jamanis said. Veri recalled that the piece became a tradition. “No matter what we played (that evening), we ended with the ‘Spring,’” she said. “It was like our signature (song).” When discussing playing the “Romantic Pieces” of Dvorak, which the duo will play at the concert, Jamanis remembered playing them at Harriet Brisk’s house when he was in middle school. “Harriet was a family friend and important member of the Musical Arts Society,” explained Veri. “She would have house concerts for young people,” added Jamanis. Together, Jamanis and Veri will play Wieniawski’s “Scherzo Tarantelle.” “(The music) is supposed to (be reminiscent) of a spider,” explained Jamanis. “The ‘tarantelle’ is the dance you do after you are bit by a spider.” Each of the musicians has selected a solo piece by Bach to perform. “I am going to do the ‘Chromatic Fantasy,’” said Veri. “It’s a favorite (of mine) and a great work.” Jamanis will play Bach’s “Chaconne,” a piece that has become a sort of signature for him. “It has been part of my repertoire for years (because) it feeds my spirit, and it symbolizes the arc of life (for me),” he said. Both performers are especially excited about the concert setting. “It is like putting your arms around the audience,” said Veri, and Jamanis added, “There is no fourth wall in this.” There is no cost to attend the concert. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LCHS Fine and Performing Arts program. Readers who have questions may call 717-509-0310 or email tbrill@lchsyes.org.

audience members may vote by secret ballots, which will be gathered at intermission, to determine who the killer is, and the cast will stage the rest of the play based on the results. According to Wagner, the ensemble cast of 13 has been rehearsing nine different endings, among the other unusual twists and turns in the play. In addition to learning the nine endings, Wagner noted that members of the ensemble are learning to be on stage for long periods of time without lines to say. “Remaining in character and tackling line delivery to make the lines funny (is a challenge),” said Wagner. “There is a lot of humor, but it is subtle humor so if the students can bring their characters to life, the audience is (more likely) to understand the humor.” Wagner hopes that audiences will enjoy the opportunity to take part in something that focuses on entertainment value. “It’s about letting the audience escape and laugh,” said Wagner, who added that cast members are already having fun with the show. “The students love it,” she noted, adding that the students are bonding over the experience. “It’s a team-building play,” she added. The plot revolves around dictatorial Simon Starkweather, played by Isaac Schwartz. Each of Starkweather’s heirs has a reason to do away with the ancient billionaire. In 1964, Starkweather invites his family and employees to his mansion so he can announce the contents of his will. First, Lois van Zandt, Starkweather’s lawyer, played by Natalie Knox, tells the group the will leaves a fortune to Starkweather’s niece Fiona, played by Bernadette Fertal; her son Jordan, played by Xavier Miles LeFevre; Starkweather’s great-niece Paula Thompson, played by Bronte Spidaliere; and Starkweather’s grandson Simon III, also played by Schwartz, as well as to his many servants. Then the lawyer announces that within hours the document will become invalid. The heirs and staff - the butler, played by Oliver Klemmer; the maid, played by Maddi Lewis; the cook, played by Jami Ely; the housekeeper, played by Gloria Cao; and the handyman, played by Aaron Kern - are not happy, and when the lights go out, Simon is discovered murdered. Simon III enlists the help of detective Mike Davis, played by Jim Mikulski, to determine the identity of his grandfather’s killer. Miss Withers, the nurse, will be played by Adeline Hibshman, and secretary Kathy Collins will be played by Aria Yang. Lily Bauer will play the usher. When the first half of the play ends,
