God Is Doing A New Thing Co-Pastors Lead Mellinger Mennonite

WEEKLY PROGRAM

By Ann Mead Ash

Asked how he and Roger Weaver became co-lead pastors of Mellinger Mennonite Church, 1916 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, Dan Cloyd immediately mentioned the prayer teams that were at work during the church’s pastoral search. “All during the search process, there was a lot of prayer going on, and the group that was praying said to the search team, ‘Maybe you should be thinking about two lead pastors,’” said Cloyd. On Sept. 1, 2019, Cloyd and Weaver began leading the church, leading and overseeing the church ministries, and taking turns preaching. Cloyd is full time at the church, while Weaver is half time. Cloyd oversees the church’s ministry of

congregational life and works with Danielle Hofstetter, who is minister to children and families. Cloyd also oversees administration of the inside of the building. Weaver oversees mission and evangelism, and he works with his wife, Brenda, who is director of youths and young adults. Weaver oversees the trustees who care for the building and grounds. Matt Fahnestock serves as minister of music. Cloyd is originally from Kansas, and he attended Oklahoma Wesleyan University before first venturing to Lancaster County as a Black Rock Retreat employee in the summer of 1984 between his junior and senior year. After graduating, he returned to work at Black Rock before becoming a Bible teacher at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS). He worked at the school until 1987, during which time Mellinger became his home church. In See Mellinger Mennonite pg 2

James and Teri Craft have a story to tell. The founders of The Novus Project and the authors of “Exposed: A Journey of Hope and Renewal,” they will share their story of how God brought healing and restoration to the tatters of their marriage when they speak at the one-day Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) marriage seminar and banquet. Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of RTCM, learned of the Crafts because they are featured in The Conquer Series, a strategic program to help men overcome addictions to pornography; Santiago uses the program to help RTCM students gain victory. 1987, he became a youth pastor at Manor Brethren in Christ Church in Millersville. He remained in that position until 1993, when he became the lead pastor of a church in Argonia, Kan. In 2000, he and his wife, Corene, helped a friend plant a new church in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In 2002, Cloyd returned to Lancaster County, performing construction work until he became a member of the staff at Living Faith Church of God, which met in the LMHS cafeteria. In 2008, he pastored the Lititz Wesleyan Church. In 2015, Cloyd took time off to help care for his father-in-law. He was contacted by the Mellinger search committee in the spring of 2019. Weaver has been involved with Mellinger for nearly 30 years, serving on

the preaching team for more than five years. He completed a three-year layperson’s educational program offered through the Lancaster Mennonite Conference called The Step Program in 2014. Weaver was surprised to be nominated for pastor, and he was unsure of taking on the role. “I always saw myself serving as a layperson,” said Weaver, who has worked in masonry most of his adult life. “I never saw myself as serving in a (pastoral) role.” As time passed and the search committee continued to return to Weaver as a candidate, he began to see things differently. “It became evident that the Lord was leading in this, and it was humbling and scary,” he said. When the search team asked the two

men how they would feel about serving together, both responded favorably. Looking ahead, the two pastors have been examining the concepts of community, connection, authenticity, identity, and growth. “We feel like there are some key basics the church ought to be about based on Scripture,” noted Cloyd, who added that loving God, loving neighbors, and preaching the Gospel to all the world are among those. “We want to focus on the basics (because) if the church can do these things well, we will be a healthy church,” he said. Mellinger Church holds Sunday school each Sunday at 9 a.m., with worship at 10 a.m. Emmaus Road Café, located on the church property, holds Lifetree Café events as a regular outreach ministry. Triple Tree Church meets in the café as well. The Parent Preschool Center, with more than 40 years of ministry, is housed on the lower floor of the church. Readers who would like more information may visit www.mellingerchurch.org.

Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Friday, Feb. 7. Seminar doors will open at 7:30 a.m. The seminar will include a continental breakfast and a cold buffet lunch, and it is scheduled to end at 3:30 p.m. The banquet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Couples or individuals may register to attend the seminar or the banquet or both. A discount will be offered to those who register by Wednesday, Jan. 15. Table sponsorships are available as well. The Conquer Series was developed by Dr. Ted Roberts, a Foursquare minister. The Crafts became involved with the series after James was exposed for his sexual addiction while the couple was serving at a church in Hawaii. James thought he would take his secrets to his grave, and before they were exposed, Teri had no idea he was struggling. In trying to control his life, James said that God pointed out to him that he was not in control. He confessed to his wife and three daughters, and the family began packing to leave Hawaii. Packing, however, was only the

beginning. The journey of healing began when James’ daughters came to him and hugged him, and the couple started to see God’s grace in the middle of the pain and anger. They began to focus on allowing God to restore their brokenness, putting their entire lives into rebuilding the family. The Conquer Series helped James understand what was happening in his mind and impacted his movement forward away from addiction. In 2014, Santiago worked with Petra Church in New Holland to bring Roberts to Lancaster County. Roberts taught a seminar at the church and then served as a speaker at a banquet for an addictions ministry Santiago was directing at the time. In his work at RTCM, Santiago strives to help individuals who have turned to addictions often to overcome a past trauma. The ministry aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Santiago uses The Conquer Series with the clients at RTCM because he says Roberts’ book “Pure Desire” addresses the principles

of sexual addiction. “I ask (clients) to tell me what a chapter was about, what (they) learned, how (they) can apply that in (their lives),” said Santiago. “That helps them (because it) starts transforming them from the inside out. I want them to develop accountability. I use (the series) because it’s effective.” Santiago emphasized that the seminar can be useful for couples that are experiencing any kind of marital strife. “(They may ask) ‘Is it how we communicate? How we manage our finances? Childhood trauma that we haven’t addressed?’ It could be anger, verbal or physical abuse, or emotional abuse,” said Santiago. “There are all kinds of things that can be wrong in a marriage, and (the seminar) will address all of that. Our desire is to encourage and strengthen marriages.” Groups are welcome, and table discounts will be available for larger groups. Tracey Jones from pg 1 then attended Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., for a year before earning an associate degree at the New Mexico Military Institute. She received an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She finished with a Bachelor of Science, graduating as a commissioned officer and working on fighter jets. She served in the first Gulf War and the Bosnian War, and she lived in England, Italy, Germany, and Turkey. She followed her service career by working for Applied Materials in Austin, Texas, while she earned a Master of Business Administration in global management from the University of Phoenix. When LBC instituted its doctoral program, Tracey decided to earn her doctorate. She entered the program at the end of August in 2015. Unfortunately, the timing was tumultuous. “I had just been through a shift with the business and lost my older brother,” recalled Tracey. “I came into it really broken.” Rather than becoming discouraged, Tracey found solace in her studies. “The dissertation program was a source of inspiration and encouragement and camaraderie,” said Tracey. “When you’re hurting as a leader (and) you talk to other leaders, and they say, ‘Keep the faith. We’re going through (this too),’ it is a sense of great comfort.” Tracey’s dissertation was titled “Leader Emergence in an Organizational Crisis - A Case Study of Follower Self-Efficacy.” “Selfefficacy (means) motivation,” explained Tracey, who, as part of her research, studied a merger that almost did not occur. “In the merger, 90% of what went wrong could have been seen with due diligence,” she said, adding that she had a revelation about halfway through the program. “(I realized that) if you don’t have See Tracey Jones pg 6

self-motivated followers, (it doesn’t matter) if you’re the greatest leader in the world,” she said. “Leadership is a dance. I learned that leadership is not as important as finding good followers.” Going forward, Tracey hopes to use what she has learned to work with organizations that are thinking of going through a merger. “I’d like to do premerger counseling,” she said. “(A merger) is a professional marriage,” said Tracey who plans to marry in early 2020. “I would love to do organizational reconnaissance, and tell (companies) which employees are on board, which need to get on board, and which will never get on board. As human beings, we don’t always see the big picture.” LBC’s doctoral program students can complete the 30-credit program in as little as two years. Courses are delivered in a blended format, offering the flexibility of online education and the benefit of only one three-week residency component. Students complete the program in a cohort community of about a dozen students. Tracey took part in the fifth cohort. Information about the program and application materials are available at www.lbc.edu/capital/academics. Applications are currently being accepted.

Ephrata Cloister from pg 1 Ephrata’s fourth-grade students have taken a new approach to discovering the town’s history. During their visit to the Historic Ephrata Cloister on Oct. 11, 2019, students gathered materials for a cornerstone project encouraging local residents to visit the Ephrata Cloister. Back in their classrooms, students created brochures, posters, and videos inviting people to see the place where Ephrata began. Models and games were part of the museum that Akron Elementary students

built in their classrooms, using the Ephrata Cloister as the subject of each exhibit. At Fulton Elementary, Bekah Zook, Stella Patterson, and Alyssa Campalans, students in Mr. Needleman’s class, enlisted the aid of their families to hold a bake sale. Each item sold came with a brochure about the museum, a short explanation of the students’ visit, and the things waiting for other visitors to discover. During the bake sale, the students raised $86, which they donated to the Historic Ephrata Cloister to support the site’s programs.

Pictured on front: Ephrata Cloister historic site administrator Elizabeth Bertheaud (back) joined fourth-graders (front, from left) Bekah Zook, Stella Patterson, and Alyssa Campalans to receive donations from their bake sale, held to promote visitation to the Historic Ephrata Cloister as part of the students’ cornerstone project.

“It’s that time again for our Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike,” said group representative Carl Kanaskie. “This is a very special year for us because it marks our 10th anniversary, which we’ll celebrate with (additional) unique prizes.” The event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Lancaster County Central Park. Participants and spectators may park for bus pickup at 826 Eshleman Mill Road, Lancaster. Race-day registration and check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the park’s Pavilion 22/Kiwanis Lodge. The race will start at 10 a.m. Dogs on leashes are welcome to accompany their owners in the race. The course will follow the same route as last January, winding through the park on well-maintained trails with some hills. Kanaskie described the 5K as a “fun run” that awards a plethora of prizes. Distinctive prizes and colorful ribbons will be given to the overall top three male and female finishers; the first-, second-, and third-place winners in different age and gender categories; and the first three finishers of any age group who race with their dogs. There also will be a packet pickup prize as well as door and dog prizes for this milestone-year event. A registration fee has been set and may be paid on race day. Those who register by Friday, Jan. 17, will pay a discounted fee. Advance registrants may pick up their race packets on Jan. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods in The Shoppes at Belmont, Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. A total of 234 runners and hikers registered for the 2019 Polar Bear 5K, Kanaskie reported. Scores of volunteers also were on hand to oversee the event, and 47 well-behaved dogs either ran or walked with their owners. The Polar Bear 5K is the Sierra Club Lancaster Group’s major fundraiser. The group uses the proceeds to support local efforts to end global warming, which is credited as the reason polar bears and other creatures are at risk of extinction. The funds will help finance the group’s popular “green project” grant program, which has awarded grants of up to $500 to 44 Lancaster County organizations over the past four years. Race proceeds will also sustain the group’s free-to-the-public outdoor activities and educational programs. The Sierra Club is a national organization with each state having its own chapter. The Lancaster Group, one of 10 groups in the Pennsylvania Chapter, has about 1,500 members. For more information, online registration, and forms, readers may visit www.lancaster sierraclub.org and click on the Polar Bear 5K tab, email sierraclubevent@gmail.com, or visit www.facebook.com/sierraclublancaster.
