Hope Inspire Love now has headquarters to fight human trafficking It’s about the organization. It’s about the mission. It’s about the people. It’s not about bricks and mortar. But a building provides the structure that can bring everything together. Hope Inspire Love has a new home. It’s a space that the local human-trafficking opposer can call its own.

“This is for us to provide more services,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s president and CEO. “We want to grow our programs. This is just how we’ve evolved in the community. Now our name is on the side of a building. People will walk by and say, ‘What’s Hope Inspire Love about?’ Having a brick-and-mortar building will cause people to want to get involved, to get behind it. This

Members of the Hope Inspire Love team slice the ceremonial ribbon at the organization’s new office.

“Having an actual location where people can come to, it’s just so great,” added Thurston. “We want to have a safe place where our community can come and heal. We’ve already had people come in and say, ‘I’ve been looking for you.’” The move to 1380 Harrisburg Pike culminated a nearly two-year search for Hope Inspire Love. Some of the $65,000 raised at the organization’s inaugural Hope for Freedom gala in June of 2023 was used to fund the relocation and to purchase furnishings. “ A f t e r C O V I D, w e paused and asked ourselves, ‘Is this what we really want to do?’” said Thurston. “We wanted to be right outside the city. is the launch pad to make it happen.” On Dec. 13, 2023, Hope Inspire Love hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at its new digs at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event was attended by about 100 community members, clergy, volunteers, board members and individuals whose lives have been directly or indirectly affected by human trafficking. “ The atmosphere was wonderful, because it was beautiful people coming together to support one cause,” said T hurston. “There was a certain energy there. We’re not a home. We’re a place where people can come and get services. It was really neat because people were asking how they could get involved.” Before settling into the 1,100 square feet at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Hope Inspire Love had no real office space. Most of its face-to-face work was being performed at coffee shops or libraries or churches. “After COVID-19, we went remote,” said Thurston. “We have not had a permanent home since 2020. It was very tough. It kept costs low, but we were seeing that people didn’t know how to find us, and we couldn’t help them.”

It has an open floor plan, and the intake office in the back can be utilized for connecting in the future.” Hope Inspire Love’s new office space also represents a milestone in the organization’s process of progress. “At the beginning, we were so focused on education,” said Thurston of

the organization, which was founded in 2017. “We probably thought about the office originally 10 years ago. I never thought it would happen in year six. But we can’t do this alone. What’s blown us away is that we now have three fulltime staff members and over 50 volunteers. We are so grateful and so thankful for a great community.” For additional information on Hope Inspire Love, go to www.hopeinspire love.org.

FCA from pg 1 “We are looking for volunteers and for coaches willing to have character coaches (help out),” added FCA’s Kyle Martin, who works with students at Lampeter-Strasburg , Conesto ga Valle y, and Solanco high schools. Adam Burns, FCA area representative with Pequea Valley and Ephrata high schools, noted that the job of a character coach is to serve the coaching staff team in any way he or she can, and that a volunteer need not be proficient in a sport to be a character coach. Character coaches are asked to aid the head coach with a focus on social and emotional development of student-athletes. Objectives include encouraging athletes, working to create a positive culture, and helping to develop leadership characteristics in athletes. The first year of serving usually involves building relationships, followed by working to develop leadership skills. “If the door opens to spiritual conversation, that’s awesome, but the sole purpose is to serve,” added Burns. Burns also noted that character coaching may look different depending on the specific sport and the players. He pointed out that Diana Roth, who is the FCA representative for ELANCO and Cocalico school districts and Lancaster Mennonite High

School, is also a character coach for the Garden Spot girls’ soccer team. “It’s a team of girls with an all-male coaching staff,” explained Burns. “(Her ro l e ) o p e n s d o o r s fo r girls when they’re going through stuff. She is there to be on the bench and develop relationships.” Burns recalled that one of his first experiences as a character coach for the Pequea Valley baseball team was to oversee six students who needed to complete schoolwork to be academically eligible to play. “We would have had to forfeit three games the following week because we would not have had enough players (if the work was not completed),” Burns explained. Martin noted that his experience has included working through emotions with a student who was benched by a coach due to a class disruption. He has also worked on character development with team leaders. “The way you react to things on the field can change anyone’s perspective,” he said, noting that in one game an opposing team p l ay e r m a d e a n i n a p propriate gesture as he crossed home plate. “How do we respond to that as a team?” he asked. “ We don’t want to emotionally react. We want to take a deep breath and respond.” Swarr said that the FC A volunteer process includes an application and a 30-minute training video. “It’s an introduction to FCA’s discipleship strategy,” he said. “Ideally, (volunteers) meet regularly with the local staff people for resources and advice.” Burns added that character coaches are asked to be at each home game and to try to be at practice once or twice a week for 30 minutes as their schedule allows. F C A has chapters in nearly ever y L ancaster County school district, and the organization is eager to meet individuals who would like to serve as character coaches and team coaches who are open to taking part in the program. Not only is it one of the top sporting events in the United States and one of the most important golf tournaments in the world, but it’s also going to provide an economic boom for the area. The 2024 U.S. Women’s Open will prove to be a win-win for the Lancaster Country Club, Manheim Township and Lancaster County. The U.S. Open is coming to - or, more accurately, returning to - the Lancaster Country Club (LCC) in five months. Apparently, the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) last trip to Lancaster in 2015 was so successful, everyone involved thought it would be a good idea to do it again. “It’s huge. Huge isn’t the proper adjective,” said Josh Saunders, Lancaster Country Club’s director of grounds. “You don’t have to be a golf fan to come out and support your community. People are going to come from all over to witness this event. It’s not a feather in (the LCC’s) cap. It’s a feather in the community’s cap. The community has embraced the event.” During the week of May 27, 2024, many of the finest players in the world will descend upon the LCC, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, and its par-70, 6,600-yard layout to decide the championship of United States women’s golf. Players will play practice rounds on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of that week. The four-round, 72-hole championship tournament will begin on Thursday, May 30, and conclude on Sunday, June 2. “With 25 years of experience and the help of my staff, we’re going to put on the best show possible,” said Saunders. “It’s been a lot of

planning. We’re all excited, and it’s exciting for the community. The Lancaster Country Club is committed to championship golf. I think that’s appealing to the USGA and one of the reasons they’ve come back. We’re going to be able to hold more people, the players are going to have an extremely different experience and it’s going to be a much more exciting venue compared to 2015.” The USGA estimates that the U.S. Women’s Open will inject more than $30 million into the local economy for businesses like restaurants, hotels and shops. In 2015, when the 70th U.S. Women’s Open was contested at the LCC, more than 134,000 spectators attended, a U.S. Women’s Open record total that still stands today. “I t will have a huge economic impact,” said

More than 134,000 spectators attended the U.S. Women’s Open at the Lancaster Country Club when In Gee Chun won it in 2015.

Saunders. “Just the number of people coming to town and spending money. It will mean millions and millions of dollars for the local economy. As a club, we really don’t get a lot of it. This is our gift back to the community. We want to get people into the community to see what Lancaster is all about.” “Women’s golf has taken

off over the last nine years,” Saunders continued. “Tournament prizes have almost tripled. There are more women playing golf. These players are really good. They hit the ball just as far as the average male, and they’re consistent. They don’t get off line. The players love the golf course. The players love playing in this atmosphere.”
