In late summer and early fall of 2019, Occupational Development Center (ODC), 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, presented the first Olivia S. Stoner Awards. The organization has designated that two awards, named for one of ODC’s founders, will be given each year. “One is to go to an individual or group of individuals and another to a business, explained Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC. “The awards will be given to those who embody the spirit and vision of Olivia Stoner, said Mueller, adding that recipients will be recognized for reflecting Stoner’s commitment to creating a better life for individuals with disabilities. At the end of August 2019, the first award was given to Benjamin and
Mignon Bowman. Now in their 90s, the couple has supported the work of the ODC, and its participants, for more than 50 years. Ben first became involved in the early 1960s as a member of the AMBUCS, which raised funds for ODC. In 1965, when Ben was heading up Wickersham Construction, the company built the second addition to the ODC building. Wickersham built the third addition in 1984. In the 1980s, Ben served as board president. “(The Bowmans) have been big supporters (of ODC), said Mueller of Ben and Mignon, who have been generous with both their time and finances. Mignon is part of the ODC Auxiliary that raises money for the organization. “They are a sweet couple, and are still active with ODC in a variety of ways. The second award was presented in October 2019 to Kinsey’s Outdoors in See ODC pg 5

Postal Service Shares Snow Removal Tips Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers
receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home - can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. All guests will receive a printed photo of themselves on the red carpet and a goodie bag of snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. “The impact that it makes is tremendous. Night to Shine is so special not only for the guests but for their families, too,” stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” “This is the only time that a lot of the parents will get to see their kids dressed up like this. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them,” continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them.” More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancast er.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. for people with special needs. Night to Shine is one of several ministries led by the foundation established by Tebow, a former professional quarterback and current professional baseball outfielder and college football analyst for the SEC Network. This year’s Lancaster Collaboration of Night to Shine will be held from 5:45 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, in Olympic Hall at Spooky Nook Sports, while hundreds of other events are hosted simultaneously by volunteers at sites around the world. People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at www.gbclancast er.org/night2shine by Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission is free. The Lancaster Collaboration originally hosted Night to Shine at Grace Baptist Church of Lancaster before relocating to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church last year. According to Ketchum, 270 guests attended in 2019, and organizers are projecting 370 guests for 2020. Donations are still needed to support Night to Shine. “One hundred dollars covers one guest and their buddy, plus all of the activities that we offer,” Ketchum said. Guests will be greeted by friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage,

She remained an integral part of the organization into the early 1980s. “(Stoner) served on the board and was very active in what was being done (at ODC),” said Mueller. “She was a forwardthinking, proactive, and strong woman who really had a vision for ODC that was ahead of the times.” Stoner’s interest in founding ODC was tied to a nephew who had developmental disabilities and did not have many opportunities in the 1940s. “She didn’t like (his) options,” said Mueller. “Who we are (as an organization) today is based on her vision.” The Stoner Award is unique, so ODC sought an item to exemplify the Stoner vision by working with the glass blowers at the Stiegel Glassworks in Manheim. group makes comforters that are distributed to disaster survivors and refugees by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) as well as to homeless people by shelters in the Reading area. A comforter is made from a top pieced from squares that typically measure between 4 and 8 inches per side and a solid backing, together sandwiching quilt batting or a heavy piece of fabric. The three layers are tied together with knots made from strong thread. The comforters are finished by binding the edges, and they measure 60 inches by 80 inches, large enough for a twin-size bed. A sewing factory in the Ephrata area closed a few years ago and donated a wealth of unused material to the sewing circle. Volunteers cut the fabric into squares, which Weaver organizes into groups for quilt tops. Weaver’s mother, Ruth Bruckhart, sews the tops, and then Weaver assembles the

Weaver noted that she does a lot of the work at home because her responsibilities at her family’s greenhouse business often prevent her from attending sewing circle meetings. “We do this on the offseason,” Weaver remarked. “Our vocation doesn’t allow vacations, so I do staycations at home. I tie comforters in our basement. It’s so therapeutic. I just love it.” Bruckhart is 82 years old and a prolific sewist. In 2019, she sewed an all-time high of 343 quilt tops for the sewing circles at Hammer Creek and Hernley Mennonite Church. “It’s a special outlet for her,” Weaver remarked. When Weaver learned about the opening of Providence Shelter and saw pictures of the whitesheeted cots, she felt compelled to contact Water Street Mission. The sewing circle prefers to send
dark-colored comforters to MCC relief efforts because they tend not to show dirt. That left an assortment of lighter-colored comforters that had not yet found a home. “We thought it would be good (for them) to go to a place with a washer and dryer,” Weaver said. In all, the group had 77 comforters available, so Martin and Weaver delivered them to Providence Shelter. As an additional service, they asked to make the beds. “For Erma and me to go in there, it was so rewarding,” Weaver said, noting that seeing the comforters put to use was one of the highlights of her life. She added that the shelter, which was created in a renovated warehouse on the Water Street Mission campus, is clean and inviting. “We created Providence Shelter so those experiencing homelessness can feel God’s protective care
in their lives,” said mission president Jack Crowley. “We want guests to see how God has seen ahead to their time of need and actually used the generosity of our community and partners to prepare Water Street for their arrival, providing more than beds and a place to sleep, but an environment that reflects our spiritual need for love and dignity ... a space that can reinspire hope in the hopeless.” Content developer Che Jimenez noted that the mission had estimated it would spend $3,000 on bedding for the shelter. “The quilts saved us all that money as well as added a personal touch to our beds,” he said. “Right now, we are still accepting twin bed sheets that we need on an ongoing basis.” Readers are welcome to visit https://wsm.org/make-an -impact/donate-goods/ to learn how they can contribute to Providence Shelter.

Youth, Injuries Play Roll in Lady Bucks Success by Leah Sintic

senior, battling through a tumultuous early season. Last Wednesday they took a hit from a league opponent, in a narrow 33-28 loss to Elizabethtown. After falling behind 21-11 in the first half, the Buckskins had a strong second half, out-scoring the Bears 17-12 led by Laela Robinson’s 10 points, but fell just short of a full comeback. In addition to many new faces on the roster, the CV club welcomes head coach Bill Moore to the helm. New to Conestoga Valley, but certainly not lacking in experience, Moore brings 23 years of coaching expertise to the table and is excited about the potential at CV. “It is currently the year of injuries for us,” acknowledged Moore, yet choosing to focus on the positives. “These players have been great to coach. They come to practice every day and work to get better. Our record is not indicative of how hard they are working.” While still missing a league win, the squad keeps pushing in hopes of improving that 0-6 streak in Januaryand getting their full roster healthy enough to compete. Having already clashed with Penn Manor twice this season, the CV girls narrowed the deficit in their second meeting, falling by merely nine points, 45-36, at the Solanco Holiday Tournament on December 28. Sophomore Taylor Hehnly scored nine points for the Bucks, while Alexis Goldsborough and Robinson each added eight. In the first showdown with the
Comets, the Bucks slipped 45-33; this time it was the team’s lone senior, Savannah Byers, pacing the CV offense with nine. “Savannah has been a great role model for the other players,” praised Moore. “She is asked to do different things this year and has stepped up to the challenge every time.” The Lady Bucks got a taste of victory in a nonleague match early on, a well-balanced 50-30 besting of Kutztown in the consolation game of the Fleetwood Tip-Off Tournament on December 7th. CV outplayed Kutztown in threeof-four quarters, received point contributions from eight athletes, and had three players hit double digits. Robinson led all scorers with 16, while Destiny Ellerbe and Hehnly supplied matching 11s. Hehnly also led the team the previous evening with a dozen points in the opening contest of the tournament, a 64-29 loss to William Allen High School. WRESTLING Setting their sights on repeating and exceeding last year’s Section I title achievement, the Bucks embarked on the 2019-2020 season and got things off to a mixed start with a 3-3 run in the early season. Last Wednesday, the Buckskins notched their third league meet, taking down McCaskey at home, 41-32. CV was trailing 12-3 after three bouts, but Jayden Fryberger, at 145 pounds, and Taylor Sheaffer at 152, strung together back-to-back pins to put
CV back in the driver’s seat, 15-12. Though McCaskey earned points in four subsequent bouts, a pair of forfeits stifled their attempt at a resurgence, and the Bucks capitalized on the necessary points with Jesse Lonon’s pin at 285, and a technical fall from Trent Ruble (106). Despite graduating a talented group of seven seniors last season, the Buckskin roster boasts a formidable lineup and early season highlights included a collective 17th place finish at the Panther Holiday Classic in large field of 43 teams. Returning grapplers Conrad Dillman and Keaton Fisher turned in especially noteworthy performances at the event with Dillman claiming sixth place at 182 pounds and Fisher earning eighth at 126. “You need to wrestle well to place,” noted head coach Trent Turner, pointing out both athletes’ improvement from the previous season. Last year’s 17-4 record sets the bar high, and the Bucks proved they were ready from the get-go with a 51-18 takedown of Manheim Township midway through December to open league competition. On December 17th, the CV matmen took a hit to their league record, falling 42-21 to Hempfield, but retaliated quickly, overcoming Warwick, 38-24, just two days later and hoping to turn the lessons learned into additional fuel for the season. “The team responded and beat a competitive Warwick squad,” pointed out Turner. “This season is a new team with its own identity and new kids having to buy into the core covenant of Brotherhood, Hard Work, Heart, and Respect.” RIFLE After three setbacks to open the season, the Buckskin rifle club gained some traction and picked up a pair of wins, and have hit the midpoint of their season with a record of 2-5. Last Thursday the team was dealt a pair of losses slipping behind Manheim Central 495-486 and succumbing the day before to a near perfect Ephrata
effort in a 498-487 loss. On January 3rd the CV marksmen kicked off the New Year outshooting Governor Mifflin 486-476. Witmer and Habecker led the pack with a pair of 99s, while Madeleine King (97), Edison Stauffer (96), and Wyatt Stauffer (95) rounded out CV’s top five. Just before the holiday hiatus, the Buckskins honed in on their first league win, outshooting the Wilson Bulldogs, 484-481, on December 19th. The overall consistency of the Buckskin club achieved the win, with Witmer, Grady Ray, Edison Stauffer, and Sierra Land each registering identical 97s, and Montana Habecker getting the job done with a 96. A 490-486 loss to Elizabethtown opened the league portion of the season, with CV’s Dana Witmer registering the only perfect 100 for either team in the dual, though it was the Bears depth that allowed them to claim the team win. Montana Habecker took a turn at the helm leading the club with a 99 in a mid-December loss to Garden Spot, 492-485. “There are great kids on the team who really want to be good. They are just great kids to be around,” described head coach Hank Oxendine. SWIMMING Eager to dive into the start of league meets last week, CV swimmers faced an early week weather postponement, making Thursday’s competition at Lampeter-Strasburg the first league showdown. For the boys, the start of league meets was a rewarding one, as they notched their first team win, 82-67. “We have a great group of boys who work hard and have fun,” noted head coach Barb Raasch, pointing out several swimmers’ willingness to participate in any event for the good of the team. TJ Conlin and Micah Leaman pulled in two wins apiece; Conlin taking the 50 free (25.1) and 100 free (56.09) and Leaman the breaststroke 1:10.02 and 200 IM (2:10.58). the 500 free at 6:00.42 and Joshua Proch took the butterfly in 1:00.91. Teaming up for a relay win, Leaman, Ethan Proch, Dhurv Marwaha, and Conlin got the job done in the 200 free in just 1:53.33. For the girls the night went in favor of Lampeter-Strasburg, 117-53, with only veteran swimmer and captain, Sarah Marston, registering an event win, clocking a 1:03.08 in the butterfly. “Lots of new names and faces that are working hard to become stronger and better swimmers,” encouraged Coach Raasch. Before the holiday, the girls worked through their December schedule going 1-2 in nonleague competitions. December 19th’s matchup against McCaskey produced a slew of individual wins as well as two relay victories to seal an overall 89-65 Buckskin success. Raasch raked in the first place points with individual wins in 100 butterfly (1:02.23) and 200 IM (2:17:58) and was a part of both relay wins. Nina Kramer, Jordan Holmes, and
Ashley Nolt joined Raasch to win the 200 medley with a time of 2:06.64, and in the 400 free Marston, Holmes, Kyla Pham and Raasch put together a 4:06.38. Other top times included Marston’s double success in the 100 free (56.05), and 200 free (1:59.04). Nolt cruised to a win in the 50 free (29.2), and Holmes 1:06.6 in the backstroke. BOWLING Still in the hunt for their first headto-head win in league matchups, the Buckskin bowlers were knocked back last week in a pair of losses to Penn Manor (7-0) on Thursday and to Warwick (7-0) on Tuesday. Freshman Haley Jack rolled her best series so far this season with a 526 against Penn Manor. While not an overall victory, the club’s hard work gained some game wins on December 13th, led by a 640 series performance from Robbie Jack against the Lebanon Cedars, 5-2. Jack, a junior, strung together a three-game run of 232-204-204 to cap the night with a 213 average and boost the Bucks.

Nina Kramer turned in a 6:27.62 to finish third in the girls 500yard freestyle for the Buckskins during their 117-53, Section Two loss to Lampeter-Strasburg last Thursday at the L-S YMCA.
Just before the holiday break, Jack continued to heat up the lanes, knocking down a series season high of 684 (203-246-235), in a 7-0 loss to Elizabethtown. Fellow junior Annabel Whitton collected the most CV pins in the first league match of the season, a 5-2 loss to McCaskey on December third, where Whitton put together a 180171-184 to lead the Bucks with a 535 series. “Taking those points from McCaskey and Lebanon took a team effort and will continue to take a team effort each match to compete,” encouraged head coach Doug Davidson. “I love the CV bowlers; I would not want to coach any other group. They are so eager to learn and improve in the game.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL Buckskin boys’ basketball is also still seeking their first league victory, taking their most recent setback in an 80-60 loss to Elizabethtown last Wednesday. Though not a win, there was abundant effort demonstrated from the Buckskin side. Will Stone poured in 21 points, Austin Wertz went sixof-six in free throws, ending up with CV’s second highest point total with 14, and Bradley Stoltzfus contributed 10 points. Despite a rough start to the league portion of their schedule, the club has responded with tenacity finding success in several non-league matchups in December. On the 27th, the Bucks earned a holiday win hanging on to top Solanco, 43-42. Collectively, the Bucks shot 10-of17 from the line, and it turned out every one of those additional points was necessary to seize the win. Wertz contributed half of the team’s free throw successes and accumulated a total of 17 points to lead CV to victory. Just before the holiday break, the Bucks picked up a 61-46 win over Oxford High School on the 23rd, where junior Luke Rumbaugh was unstoppable from downtown, netting six three pointers and gathering 23 points. Stone and Wertz also made big offensive contributions with 15 and 14 points respectively. On December 20th CV played in their lowest scoring clash so far this season, a 39-38 heartbreak loss to Hempfield, in which the Bucks got behind early down 22-14 at halftime, but fired back to outscore the Black Knights 24-17 in the latter half, but came up just a point shy. The first of CV’s triumphs was an 83-45 season opener over Kutztown, in which four Bucks notched double digits, Gabe Matos and Wertz with 16 apiece, Stoltzfus 14, and Stone with 13.

As part of its ongoing series of craft workshops, the Strasburg Heritage Society will offer a hearthside cooking workshop on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presenters Ann Lainhoff and Nancy Koch will teach the fundamentals of hearthside cooking. Following a brief introduction, participants will have the
- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping
Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

Being able to legally and comfortably operate a ham radio can open doors to friendship, an enjoyable hobby, and public service, Boone said, adding that ham radios can operate in areas where cellphones cannot. Two seconds after the first bomb was detonated at the Boston Marathon in 2013, the cellphone towers in a 20-mile radius were shut down. A network for 200 ham radio operators established communication between all the race checkpoints and the hospital. Twice a year, amateur radio operators - colloquially known as ham radio operators - set up their equipment out of doors and attempt to contact as many people around the globe as possible. “We’re practicing for emergencies,” explained Red Rose Repeater Association (RRRA) president Daniel Boone of Willow Street. “Disasters don’t know the seasons of the year.” Field days are 24-hour events in order to include amateur radio enthusiasts in all time zones, as well as to give individuals experience broadcasting during the day and night. The position of the sun impacts the distance radio waves travel, Boone said. “We have access to solar radiation reports,” Boone remarked. “The next thing you know, you’re talking to a guy in Israel on 5 watts.” “That’s like walkie-talkie energy,” explained RRRA board member Doug Rice of Lancaster. “Most (easily accessible) radios are 100 watts.” Radio broadcasting is licensed by the FCC, and that includes amateur radio operators as well. “If somebody would like to get a license, we would like to help them,” said RRRA vice president Leon Hess of East Earl. Although the RRRA does not offer exam preparation, it does assist in offering the tests, and it will refer people to training
classes in the region. The RRRA has many opportunities for those who become licensed. “For the exam, you use sponge memory. We don’t want to lose those people who get wrung out for the test,” Rice commented. “About half take the exam but never use it. When you start using the skills … (your knowledge) becomes more meaningful.” “It’s like getting your driver’s license and never using it,” Boone added. The RRRA leaders hope that newly licensed or inexperienced operators, as well as anyone with an interest in amateur radio, will participate in the Winter Field Day, which will be held from 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Welsh Mountain Community Center, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The event is sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association. The RRRA will have three stations set up, and licensed operators may use the equipment to contact other operators. Additionally, as part of its goal to welcome newcomers, several seminars will be offered during the event, and interested individuals may learn about safety and technical skills such as how to cut out interfering signals. Events like the Winter Field Day enable amateur radio operators to make connections without the pressure of a stressful
The fourth annual Lancaster County March for Life will take place on Friday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster. The event will include presentations by local ministries, videos, and live-streaming of speakers at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. The event will also include music and prayer throughout the day as well as a short indoor March for Life. Coffee and pastries will be provided
in the morning and lunch will be served in the afternoon. Those who wish to support the event but are unable to attend the March for Life in Washington, D.C., may attend the interfaith program for all or part of the day. The public is welcome to attend. New York City Marathon, and Boone is regularly stationed at mile 15 of the marathon. “We’re there to watch the runners make sure they’re not ill, not falling down - and the crowds, that nobody is causing trouble,” Boone said. There is no cost to participate in or attend the Winter Field Day. Visitors are welcome to drop in at any time during the 24-hour event, and they may bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight. Registration is requested so the RRRA can plan to have enough food ready for guests, and readers may email Rice at W3COB@arrl.net or call Boone at 717-406-6382 to register. Additional information about the RRRA is available at www.w3rrr.org.

Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they should be made to feel important and well cared
for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work as an RN or LPN. A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with

some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities
are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, teamlike attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller. “These careers require a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. They are both physically and emotionally demanding, and - at the same time endlessly rewarding,” said Focht.
