Members of what may soon be Boy Scouts of America Troop 82 watched as Abram Shrom (center) prepared to sign a new unit application for the group during the Troop 83 Court of Honor, held on Dec. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Leola. Troop 82 will function alongside Troop 83.
Conestoga Valley High School senior Lyndsey Nedrow was involved in a scouting program when she lived in Canada as a child. When the triplet moved here, she was surprised to learn that she and her sister, Lauren, could not take part in the same Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program as her brothers Ryan and Austin. Undeterred, Lyndsey attended meetings, merit badge outings, and campouts along with her brothers and her father, Mike, who is an assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 83. Now, Lyndsey, Lauren, and eight other young ladies are preparing to transition to forming their own BSA Troop 82, which will function alongside Troop 83. At the Troop 83 Court of Honor held on Dec. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Leola, Abram Shrom,
West Earl Lions Club member, signed a new unit application to further the process of creating the troop, which plans to begin meeting on Sundays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 11 N. Church St., Brownstown, in February. The troop will be open to girls ages 11 to 17 who wish to pursue the Eagle Scout rank. The West Earl Lions Club serves as the chartering organization for Crew, Pack, and Troop 82. The Lions have been supportive of Brownstown-area youths since 1958. Venturing Crew 82 has been active since April 2018. During that time, members of the crew have performed more than 200 hours of service, hiked, fished, canoed in Maine, and attended a variety of BSA training programs. The members have split logs with saws, staffed two summer camps, and spent a See Troop 82 pg 9

YMCA from pg 1 training classes in some form beginning in early February. The YMCA at New Holland, located at 123 N. Shirk Road, New Holland, will offer four classes, including a nutrition class. The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lancaster, will hold five classes, and the City Center YMCA, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, will offer eight classes. Beckett noted that the atmosphere of a small group is more conducive to students’ reaping healthy rewards. “With (large) group classes, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd and not receive that individual instruction,” Beckett said, adding that personalized training can be expensive. “This is a nice middle zone for individual attention, (while still offering) the group atmosphere of camaraderie.” The YMCA at New Holland will offer Body Sculpting 101 on Mondays at 11 a.m. beginning Feb. 11. Beginner Bootcamp will be offered on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. beginning on Feb. 14. Eat Well, Eat Smart will be offered on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 20. Beckett noted that the New Holland location has the advantage of offering a kitchen where class members can learn about macronutrients, which he said include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. “(Students) will learn how to swap certain ingredients to make recipes healthier,” said Beckett. The fourth New Holland class will be Introduction to Olympic Weight Lifting, and it will be held on Thursdays at 6 p.m. beginning on March 7. “Olympic lifts are getting popular, and people are trying them and performing them incorrectly,” explained Beckett. “They’re not getting the most benefit from the exercise if they’re not using proper form.” Beckett noted that the class will break down the technical exercises to teach the skills students need to perform the complex movements correctly. Lampeter-Strasburg will offer Fierce, Fit, Fabulous on Saturdays at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 2 and Tone, Tighten, and Train Tabata on Mondays at 6 p.m. beginning on Feb. 11. Beckett explained that Tabata involves 20 minutes of activity punctuated by a brief rest. “The idea is to increase your anaerobic capacity,” he said, adding that anaerobic activity is higher intensity than aerobic. Lampeter-Strasburg will also offer Ab Attack on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 21 and Ready, Set, Run on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning on March 2. Barbell Basics will be offered at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning March 12. Classes offered at City Center will include Aquatic Boot Camp on Mondays at 7 a.m. and Strongman Training on Mondays at noon, both beginning on Feb. 4. Tabata Jump will be offered on Mondays at 9:55 a.m., beginning Feb. 4, and Anaerobic Training for the Everyday Athlete will be offered at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning on Feb. 5. Running Strong will be offered on Tuesdays at 6 a.m. beginning on Feb. 5, and Unfinished Business, a class that will focus on making holistic life changes in diet and exercise, will take place on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 5. Body Pump Basics will be held on Thursdays at 4 p.m. and Triathlon Training will be held on Thursdays at 6 a.m., both beginning on Feb. 7. Classes are open for registration with special early bird pricing, which gives a 10 percent discount on class fees for both members and nonmembers, available through Thursday, Jan. 31. Bucks Fall to Bears Despite Strong Bench Play by Leah Sintic
Tuesday’s trip to Elizabethtown ended in their sixth league loss, a pattern the Bucks are working hard to turn around. Getting behind early in the first quarter, the Buckskins succumbed to a 70-39 defeat while visiting the Bears. Despite gathering momentum to outscore the hosts in the second and fourth quarters, the difference proved to be insurmountable, but that didn’t keep the Bucks from giving their all. Energy from the second string gave the Bucks a surge of momentum, lead by Will Stone’s nine points, complimented by another seven from sophomore Luke Rumbaugh. Ten different CV players contributed to their point
total, evidence of a well-dispersed offense. “While Elizabethtown was a tough game for us, we were happy with the effort that kids like Ethan Wertz, Luke Rumbaugh, Will Stone, and Sawyer Shertzer brought to the court off the bench,” credited head coach Brad Herr. “We need this energy to permeate all facets of our program as we move forward.” The previous weekend, the Bucks lost a close non-league battle 65-52 to Red Lion. Though the Bucks were outscored 25-15 in the first, they fired back with two strong quarters, before Red Lion pulled away in the fourth. Both teams shot well from the line, 70 percent for CV and 76 percent for
Red Lion, but it was the three-point baskets that sealed the fate of the contest. While the Buckskins dropped in five from downtown baskets, Red Lion amassed 11 triple point buckets. Ethan Bredeman tallied 15 points, Parker Graff netted 12 including fourof-four from the line, and Jordan Ransing added 11. The Buckskins are faced with an uphill battle as they enter the second half of their season with a current record of 2-10. “We continue to focus on the fundamentals in practice, and our players have maintained positive attitudes through our struggles,” explained Herr. “It’s important for us to appreciate the value of competing every day, whether in practice or a game. Learning how to give our best effort for thirty-two minutes and putting four good quarters together is key.” With a stretch of three league competitors-Warwick, Ephrata, Lebanonlined up next in the schedule, the Bucks will have plenty of opportunity to prove that effort and heart. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Learning to get back up after you’re knocked down is just one of the life lessons wrapped into athletics,
and it’s one the Lady Bucks are having to embrace after a double dose of setbacks last week. Tuesday’s 57-29 league loss to the Elizabethtown Bears, put the CV ball club at an overall record of 3-10 midway through the season. Despite falling behind 13-4 in the first quarter, CV continued to battle down to the final buzzer. The Buckskin tenacity was most noticeable in their composure during trips to the line. Lead scorer Kenzie Reed gathered over half of her game total nine points going five-of-six in free throws. Ashley Andrew followed suit with a four-of-five showing, and freshman Jeriyah Johnson sank three-of-four during her turns at the line. The previous Saturday the Lady Bucks fell 56-28 to West York in a non-league match. Reed once again led the offensive efforts with eight points, supported by Lauren Thrush with seven and an additional five chipped in by sophomore Chassidy Henriquez. WRESTLING With only McCaskey on the docket last week, the CV matmen poured their energy into the Wednesday’s

dual and were rewarded with their fifth league victory, topping the Red Tornados 54-6, to keep their league record unblemished. “It was a team effort from arrival to departure,” reflected head coach Trent Turner. “The guys are wrestling with a team focus and are committed to hard work and heart-and it’s showing in their performances.” Keaton Fischer got momentum churning at 113, winning his bout by a 6-4 decision to give the Bucks the early 3-0 lead. Isiah Gannt (182) and heavyweight grappler, Yodhe Desta each picked up a fall in the victory, the fifth of the season for each of them. Andrew Dariychuk’s 20-9 major over Noell Montanez at 132 put CV in front, 13-3 and set the stage for six straight wins. Austin Rider posted a tech fall at 138, David Dariychuk won by forfeit and
Taylor Sheaffer’s 5-1 decision at 152 extended the lead to 27-3. Josh MacNamara pulled out a 4-3 thriller over Andrew Vogerlbacher at 160, Conrad Dillman won by disqualification and Isiah Gannt closed the individual victory streak with a 37 second fall over Ntihemuka Ndahiriwe. McCaskey quieted the CV crowd with a decision at 195 but the Bucks responded with a decision by Leo Marente (220), Desta’s fall, and a forfeit victory. “McCaskey was a scrappy team and we had to work for each individual win and were pleased to walk away with the victory,” added Turner. “Each one contributed to the achieved outcome.” This week holds a highly anticipated showdown as the Buckskins are slated to face off against the Penn Manor Comets, the only

PENNYSAVER other undefeated LL Section One opponent. The critical match will determine which team will continue their season with their perfect record intact. SWIMMING Last week in the pool, it was the CV boys’ turn to claim an all-inclusive victory, marking their second consecutive league win, sweeping every event in their 109-34 triumph over Lampeter-Strasburg. The points poured in with several CV swimmers claiming multiple first place finishes. Sheldon Hertzler took the 50 free (24.27) and breaststroke (1:08.66); Auden Block earned top times in both the 200 free (2:01.76) and backstroke (1:00.25), and Nick Lynam claimed the 500 free (4:52.53) and 200 IM (2:04.57). Micah Leaman’s 54.56 in the 100 free, and Joshua Proch’s 1:00.84 butterfly clinched the final two individual events for CV. All individual event winners were also contributors in the three CV relay wins, joined by Felipe Garate and Robbie Krasinski. “I hope all the CV swimmers continue to work hard and push themselves towards personal best times throughout the season,” commented head coach Barb Raasch.
The girls meet came down to depth in the relay events, with L-S managing to edge out CV with a final score of 89-79. CV’s Karli Raasch pulled in the points for the Lady Bucks with top times in breaststroke (1:12.82) and the 200 IM (2:16.32). Sarah Marston also won two events with a 2:04.9 in the 200 free and a 1:03.08 in the butterfly. Freshman Jordan Holmes contributed another first-place finish with a 1:00.09 in the 100 free. L-S was able to nab the top spots in two of the three relays, but CV’s quartet comprised of Raasch, Homes, Marston, and Avery Heisey was able to surge ahead in the 200 free to win the event with a time of 1:50.31. “With a rather small team this year for both the boys and girls, we will struggle to fill the lanes in all events. We also need to stay healthy,” explained Raasch looking ahead. “I am confident that with a healthy team and lots of commitment and hard work at every practice, we can send more kids to the league meet at the end of the season this year.” RIFLE After an early week setback, the Buckskin rifle team retaliated
with a 596-594 outshooting over Manheim Central. The match came down to the wire, extending to the sixth shooter. The Buckskins were led by perfect 100s from Chase Miller and Montana Habecker. Dana Witmer, Alex Stoudt, Darren McGallicher, and Garret Yoder each nailed a 99 to give the team the consistency needed to come out on top. With only Elizabethtown boasting a flawless record (7-0), the race for rankings within the rifle field display a tight battle heading into the latter half of the season. CV currently holds a record of 5-2 which matches Manheim Central in the race for second. “The league has a lot of parity this year, and there are a lot of matches left in the season,” emphasized CV head coach Hank Oxendine pushing his team to reach their full potential in each match on the schedule. CV’s 496-492 loss to Ephrata last Tuesday might have been a disappointment, but the team hopes to channel the frustration into growth and future success. “It was a tough loss against Ephrata,”
acknowledged Oxendine. “Ephrata shot extremely well, with several of their shooters shooting personal bests in the match.” This time it was Witmer and Habeck-

er to lead the Buckskin efforts with a pair of 99s, while Madeleine King, Stoudt, and McGallicher each registered 98s. “We need to take a step back and refocus our practices on the
fundamentals and really stress the mental aspects of the sport,” elaborated Oxendine. “We cannot allow this setback to derail the positive gains we have made thus far.”

MLK Breakfast This year’s theme, “Why We Can’t Wait: Achieving Economic Equity,” will be championed through Bryant’s address. Bryant is the founder of Operation Hope, a nonprofit financial inclusion organization, and he was previously named one of Time magazine’s “50 Leaders for the Future.” He is an entrepreneur, an author, and a philanthropist. “The 2019 MLK Breakfast Committee, chaired by Phil Wenger of Fulton Bank and composed of local businesspeople, nonprofit partners, and community volunteers, felt that John Hope Bryant’s passion for achieving economic equity would be impactful for the 31st annual breakfast,” said Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County chief development officer Kristy Aurand. Crispus Attucks is a program of CAP, and it strives to be a leader in efforts to ensure equity for all people who call Lancaster home, Aurand said. “As we honor and celebrate the great achievements of Dr. King, we recognize our responsibility to live his legacy,” Aurand continued. “We are looking forward to (hearing) a message (from Bryant) that encourages urgency in eliminating barriers to economic equity in our community, along with guiding principles on creating systems change. We hope attendees will walk away enthusiastic about continuing this important conversation and ready to roll up their sleeves and work with us toward advancing economic equity.” There is a cost to attend the MLK Breakfast, and reservations are required. Folks may purchase tickets by calling 717-394-6604, ext. 125, or searching for the event at www.eventbrite.com.

Writing A Way Through Trauma By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Writeface, a local nonprofit organization that offers free writing workshops to veterans, has announced its 2019 winter/spring schedule. Folks do not need to be a writer or an artist to participate. Writeface strives to provide a safe space for veterans, in the company of other veterans, to explore their inner landscape by using proven writing techniques to become reacquainted with aspects of themselves that were lost in battle. “Our goal, first and foremost, is always to create a safe environment for veterans to explore and address any difficulty they may be experiencing in their present life that may have roots in the past,” said Annie Ginder, who co-founded Writeface with Scott Hower and serves as a facilitator. “The workshops we offer seem to naturally create a sense of camaraderie that many veterans say they haven’t been able to recapture in civilian life. (The) Writers on the Storm (workshop) specifically uses the metaphor of a storm in each of their classes to help teach specific writing and journaling tools that can be used for the rest of their lives to help manage
issues that come up in civilian life.” Starting on Thursday, Jan. 17, and continuing through Thursday, March 28, Writers on the Storm will be held at the Transitional Living Center, 105 E. King St., Lancaster. The workshops will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. No class will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14. Additionally, Writers on the Storm will be offered as part of Millersville University’s Lifelong Learning Institute, which will begin in March. For more information and to sign up for the workshop at the college, readers may visit www.millersville.edu/milli. Workshops for veterans will be held at the Columbia Creative Factory, 247 Locust St., Columbia. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 21 through March 25. The workshops will combine writing with different art media. Parking will be paid for by Writeface, and free lunches will be provided to all veterans who participate. For more information or questions, readers may contact Ginder at 717-799-0154 or annie.ginder@comcast.net or Hower at 717209-0410 or scotthower@aol.com.

- 1 cup Golden Barrel Organic Cane Sugar - 1 cup Golden Barrel Brown Sugar - 1 cup Golden Coconut Oil, solid state - 1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Extract - 3 eggs - 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 1 cup baking cocoa, sifted - 2 tsp. baking soda - 1/2 tsp. salt - 1/2 cup instant chocolate pudding mix (small box) - 2 1/4 cups buttermilk - 1 cup chocolate chips or chunks
Ganache - 8 oz. Dark chocolate, chopped - 1 cup heavy whipping cream (or chocolate chips) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with coconut oil and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

weekend in tents nearly every month since spring, according to Scoutmaster Erin Blank. The Eagle Scout rank is BSA’s highest award. Only a percentage of Scouts reach the rank, which is presented in a special Court of Honor. Lyndsey’s father and two brothers are both Eagle Scouts, but the creation of the troop did not allow enough time for her and Lauren to achieve Eagle status. Both girls have applied for extensions to pursue that rank while in college. According to Blank, members Jenna and Sarah Marston will probably also apply for the extension just before they turn 18. When Lyndsey was 14, she joined a coed Venturing Crew 1861, which is a Fife and Drum Corps, along with her brothers. Venturing Crews are formed to promote interest in a particular activity, and the curriculum focuses heavily on leadership and service. Taking part in the crew activities allowed Lyndsey to participate, but she wanted more. The girls of Venturing Crew 82 have been hard at work learning Scout-level skills, and they are making changes in preparation for Troop 82. “Our specific mission is to become a troop,” explained Lyndsey. “We are wearing the tan uniforms, and instead of being president, I am senior patrol leader. We are trying to create that foundation so there will be a place for (younger) girls to join.” The group members are looking forward to attending the 2019 World Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia in late July. Troop 82 will be all female, but it will be linked to Troop 83. “We will do events with them, and we share gear,” noted Lyndsey, adding that the leaders and members of Troop 83 have been very supportive of the fledgling Venturing Crew. On Dec. 17, Lyndsey led the posting of the colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the BSA oath and law at the start of the meeting, which was opened by Troop 83 committee chair Charlie Letteer. Two members of Troop 83 were recognized for rank advancements. Julian White moved up from Scout to Tenderfoot rank, and Harrison Booth moved from Star to Life Scout. Young people in the Brownstown area who are interested in Scouting may contact Blank at 717-799-0233 or Dan Dennis, Pack 82 Cubmaster, at 717-989-1906. Readers who would like more information about the new troop may visit https://bsa82.org.

tion Bible schools and Camp Good News at local churches. CEF of Lancaster County has 10 staff members and more than 300 volunteers serving in just about every school district in Lancaster County. The ministry has partnerships with more than 40 local churches.
