Transitions - Petra Under New Leadership BY ANN MEAD ASH
n Jan. 3, Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, held a special service during which a new senior pastor took on the mantle of leadership. After nearly 40 years helming the church, senior pastors Lester and Erma Zimmerman retired, and Brian Coles became the new lead pastor. Brian and his wife, Tracy, first joined the Petra ministerial staff as student ministries pastors in 2016. Tracy now serves as Petra’s local outreach pastor, and Lester will move into an expanded role providing leadership and oversight to the Hopewell Network of Churches to which Petra belongs. Noting Petra’s long history in New Holland, Brian, who grew up in Phoenixville, referred to the church’s initial service in a local
The couple served the independent church from 2008 until 2016. Gradually, Brian and Tracy felt God moving them in a new direction. “We both sensed it was time for us to transition from our previous church,” said Brian, who noted that the couple began the interview process, completing their assignment in Moorestown only a few days before beginning work at Petra. After relocating to Brownstown, they began overseeing the middle school and high school ministries at Petra, soon dividing the middle school program into sections for fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades and creating a young adult ministry. “The Lord was really blessing what we were doing, and we were growing and enjoying the community here,” said Brian, who added, “We fell in love with the area and the people of the church.” See Transitions pg 6
Winter Bible Study Series Announced BY ANN MEAD ASH
“I truly believe that my greatest joy in life, and my greatest responsibility, is to be the best wife and mom I can be,” said Annie Friedrichs, a member of the Change of Pace (COP) leadership team. COP is a seasonal Bible study program sponsored by Friendship Foundation, Inc. “COP has given us a great opportunity to come together and open God’s Word to gain the wisdom and understanding He offers,” continued Friedrichs.

fire hall in January of 1983, which attracted between 50 and 80 people. The service was the beginning of a journey of growth and commitment. “The storyline of Petra is the story of a changing church,” said Brian. “They were changing, moving, and evolving for 38 years.” That openness to growth, Brian pointed out has resulted in a wellgrounded entity. “The interesting thing about Petra is that it is such a stable piece of the local community,” he noted. “It is an honor being involved in that.” Brian and Tracy, who is originally from the Williamsburg area, met while both were attending the University of Valley Forge located in Phoenixville. Brian earned a degree in pastoral counseling there, while Tracy’s degree is in elementary education. “Our first pastoral role was in Moorestown, N.J., at Maranatha Christian Fellowship,” said Brian.
Teens, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like to meet with other young people who are going through the same thing, activities offered by the Coping Kids & Teens Program of the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, the bereavement program for Hospice & Community Care, might be right for you. Coping Kids & Teens is run by children’s services counselor Diane Kulas. The program has been around for 25 years, so hundreds, if not thousands, of youths have been helped by its individual and group support offerings. “Being in a group and knowing there’s another kid who went through this makes them feel like they’re not alone,” Kulas explained. During the pandemic, Kulas and her staff members have been focusing on offering individual sessions via Zoom and over the phone. They have been meeting with children and teenagers after school and during the evenings. To combat Zoom fatigue, the professionals have
dropped off art materials and games for future sessions at clients’ homes. “The best way to get (young people) to talk is to engage them in something they enjoy,” Kulas remarked. The Family Support Series is a six-week program offered in fall, winter, and spring. Due to the pandemic, sessions are being held online. Families gather via Zoom, then break into age-specific groups.

“(Blood) is definitely a need at any time of the year, but with everything going on with COVID, it’s at a critically low level,” said Strasburg Borough Police Department (PD) Officer Robert Burns, explaining why he is excited his department is participating in the Bleed Blue Challenge. “Anytime you can inject an amount of fun … and drive up the amount of blood in storage … it’s better.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite 202, Lancaster. Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations involved, you’d assume that you’d do even better (this year),” she said.

Encouraging blood donations is “a no-brainer,” Millersville Borough PD Lt. Jeffrey Margevich commented, adding, “It saves lives. That’s the whole key.” “Donating blood is an interesting way to help the community,” Pequea Township PD Chief John Michener remarked. “You never know who you might be saving. It could be your own (life) or your family member’s.” To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lanc astergeneralhealth.org/lgh/our -services/blood-bank/about -us/blood-drives.aspx or by calling 717-544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and not have received tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717-544-0170, option 2.

Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola. “Sermon on the Mount” by Jen Wilkens will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays from Jan. 25 through March 22. The same study will be offered on Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. from Jan. 28 through April 1. Child care will be offered for the Thursday morning session. The second study, Family Life’s “The Art of Parenting” by Dennis and Barbara Rainey, will meet Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. from Feb. 4 through April 1. The “Sermon on the Mount” study will encourage participants to think differently about what it means to be a follower of Jesus and how following Christ challenged Christians to find joy in the words of Jesus. COP Central facilitator Noel Connell notes that the Sermon on the Mount includes the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and a discussion of religious devotion, ambition, and relationships. “It seems rather timely to be studying about being a peacemaker, being salt and light in a dark world and also our relationships with others,” said Connell. Connell added that rather than dividing the sermon, the author has set up the study so that participants will consider the whole sermon to
world we live in. “The Art of Parenting” is a video-based study designed to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring 40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the subject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “We have an obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord.” They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. CV Hoops Look to Reverse Sluggish Start BY LEAH SINTIC
Last Wednesday, CV boys’ basketball faced an undefeated Warwick squad, and were dealt a 65-22 blow. The loss comes as the third in a row for the Bucks, a trend they are looking to reverse as they head into the depth of the season. The Warriors got ahead early and stayed there, but the Bucks refused to go down without a fight, putting together a strong second quarter effort, led on offense by Austin Wertz who finished with eight points. On Saturday, January 16, the Bucks suffered a 66-59 setback against Lancaster Mennonite. The close contest came down to the final quarter with free throws playing a major role in the outcome. With both teams in the bonus, the final minutes were marked by trips up and down the court to trade free throws. Both teams shot well, but unfortunately for the Bucks, the Blazers saw more opportunity and netted 21-of-25 in comparison to the Buckskins’ 12-of-16. “Currently we are sending teams to the foul line a little more than we would like,” noted head coach Jim Shipper. “Defensively we are getting better. It is a work in progress to get us to where we need to be. We will continue to work to improve our man-to-man defense.” Eighteen points from Wertz kept the offense on pace with the Blazers, including Wertz capitalizing on six-of-seven trips to the line. An addition, 11 points from Luke Rumbaugh and seven from Titus York gave the team options on the attack. It is expected that with a few tweaks the team will be functioning at an even higher competitive level soon.

Conestoga Valley’s Luke Rumbaugh hits a jumper over E-town’s Lukas Pierson for three of his team-high 10 points in the Buckskins’ 5633, Section Two loss to the host Bears on January 14.
“I feel the offensive rhythm and flow is getting better each day,” added Shipper. “We put a few wrinkles in with the offense and I was pleased to see the boys execute and score within those changes.” Limited practice time and constant fluctuations in the season schedule do not help when it comes to conditioning and game-preparedness, but that won’t stop the Bucks from pressing on. “We are making strides and I believe we are starting to form our identity as a team,” Shipper concluded. In an 56-33 loss at Elizabethtown the prior week it was Rumbaugh and York that led the CV offense with 10 and eight points, respectively. WRESTLING CV grapplers experienced split results in recent league matchups, falling 42-30 to Manheim Township on the 20th, but triumphing by two points in a close battle over Cocalico the prior week. Township churned the early momentum in Wednesday’s clash hosted by the Bucks, but despite being down, CV started to come back sparked by consecutive falls from Robby Swift at 160 and Nate Kirchner at 172. Jonathan Lopez (285) was another CV highlight, pinning his opponent at 5:12, but the early deficit was just too large to overcome. The Buckskin matmen earned their first league victory the previous Thursday, pulling off a narrow, 32-30, triumph over Cocalico on January 14th. Every bout and point proved crucial in the two-point win, making it a high-stakes event for veteran and new players alike, and the evening featured three key victories for freshmen grapplers

top five totals of the day. Haley Jack’s 578, Jocelyn Ross’ 576, and Annabel Whitton’s 563 all surpassed Lebanon’s high series of the day, a 530 by Mark Fake. “We have added a few new faces that are helping us compete in Section Two and definitely complement our returning bowlers,” noted head coach Douglas Davidson. “The motto has been thus far to continue what we started, and by all means have fun.” RIFLE The rifle team hosted Garden Spot last Tuesday and fell behind the Spartans 494-490. CV’s Wyatt Stauffer nailed a 100 to lead the Buckskin effort. Edison Stauffer put up the Bucks next highest score with a 99, Adam Zook posted a 98, Sierra Land a 97, and Grady Ray a 96. While the Spartans also had only one 100, supplied by Leksi Bender, the remaining Spartan top five all shot 98 or 99 to pull away with the win.

for the 215-pound showdown, in which Lopez also earned three points by decision to capture the final lead. “There was a little pressure on Ander Rider to come in clutch for us and he did-and so did Jonathan Lopez when he pulled out the final bout of the night with a winning decision,” acknowledged Turner. “We’re young, but we showed a lot of heart.” BOWLING CV bowling continued their hot streak, rolling over Lebanon, 7-0, last Tuesday for their second league sweep, giving them the distinction of the only Section Two team without any losses on their record in the second week of competition. Up and coming talent was on display as freshman high-roller Ryan Muckle once again won the day with his 214-203-253 series, totaling 670. The impressive performance was infectious for CV. The Eagles responded, pulling in a collective 12 points in the subsequent three duals, giving Cocalico the 30-26 edge headed into the final two bouts. CV’s Zander Rider came up big for the Bucks, wrestling up a weight class and earning three points by decision to bring the Bucks within one and set the stage
