“The community looks forward to Winterfest,” said Ferne Silberman, describing the annual Mount Joy event. “It’s really a community event, and so many groups come together to make it happen.”
Winterfest will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, along Main Street in Mount Joy, from Market to Barbara streets.
This year’s event features an earlier start time than past years, and it will also showcase an expanded area.
“The road has always been closed down to Barbara Street, but we’ve never had anything from the clock down to Barbara Street,” said Linda Eberly, event volunteer. “This year, we’re adding a holiday market that’s going to be in that area.”
The market will feature at least 15 vendors, all specializing in unique goods.
“These are artisans with handcrafted items,” Eberly shared. “Most of them are local, and they will sell jewelry, pottery, painted gourds, wooden items, candles, glassware. It’s all quality items and a variety of items.”
Winterfest will also host a food court set up on Delta Street with overflow onto East Main Street.
Participants will include Blue Stone Bakery, Bube’s Brewery,
Noel’s Café, Piper Belles BBQ, Rotary Club Fry Wagon, Savory’s Pumpkin Funnel Cakes, Spud Muffin, The Donut Guys, Two Cousin’s and the Mount Joy Lions Club. Local restaurants within the event area will also be open during the day, as well as Mount Joy retail establishments.
JB Hostetter & Sons will provide tables and chairs in the food court area.
The Reist popcorn wagon will give away popcorn at the entrance
to the holiday market, and Santa Claus will greet children and hand out treats at Sheetz Funeral Home. He will be joined by clowns creating balloon art.
Additional children’s activities will be staged at Mount Joy Church of God and will include a petting zoo, featuring Valais black-nosed sheep and alpacas; a Little Shoppers area for children to purchase cash-only gifts; face painting by Faith Outreach Center; a train layout; a RAISE28
prize wheel; a Bible2School giant prize snowman; a Fellowship of Christian Athletes penguin craft; and Little Notes music and instruments for kids to play.
Members 1st will also sponsor a coloring contest. Coloring pages can be picked up at the Members 1st table at Winterfest.
The festivities will also feature a variety of entertainment for people of all ages.
“The music lineup is terrific,” said Silberman, who is the event

For the past few weeks, a group of budding entrepreneurs at Marticville Middle School has been putting its creativity and teamwork to the test. Students in Elizabeth Ortega’s autism support classroom have embraced the role of small business owners, preparing for their debut at the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13’s Holiday Student Bazaar. Operating under the name The Spectrum Studio, these young creators have crafted a collection of one-of-akind handmade keychains and vibrant tie-dyed T-shirts, all ready for sale at the event on Thursday, Dec. 5. The bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the IU13 Conference and Training Center, 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. Several of the seven students in the class are nonverbal, but they use pictures and communication devices to share their enthusiasm for their projects. Pointing to the beaded keychains, Zayvion Jones showed off his favorites, while Nesha Hopstetter said she loves making keychains from silicone beads and shrinky dinks.

chair. “Susquehanna Stage is going to perform musical selections from ‘Frozen.’ We’re also bringing back children’s choirs from the local churches.”
The main stage, located in front of the borough office, is sponsored by Guardian Barriers and will feature entertainment beginning at 1:30 p.m. Groups in order of appearance will be Ukulele Uprising, Trinity Lutheran Church children’s choir, Guitars on Main, Susquehanna Stage, Mary Mother of the Church children’s choir, SweetLife Music, Sandy Heisey on the keyboard, Donegal Rhythm Singers and Donegal Alumni Band.
The alumni band will lead the crowd from the stage to the Rotary Clock for a carol sing-along followed by a tree-lighting ceremony. Chris Silvestri from Members 1st, the event’s major sponsor, will serve as master of ceremonies for the tree lighting, which will end the evening.
The Mount Joy Borough Police Department will hold a Toys for Tots gift drive located at Marietta Notary, and Fire Department Mount Joy will have apparatus on-site.
Tables from nearly 50 local nonprofit organizations, school groups
and churches will be set up throughout the downtown area. Many of the groups will sell items as a fundraiser for their organizations. Mount Joyarea businesses will also have stands with promotional materials, prize wheels, drawings and giveaways.
Silberman and Eberly noted that it takes a large group of volunteers to pull off a successful event. Event leadership is made up of people from the Rotary Club, Lions, Kiwanis, Voyage Mount Joy, Friends of Donegal and Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, along with other volunteers.
In addition to Members 1st, event sponsors include Gold Sponsor The Gathering Place.
Eberly noted that organizers received positive feedback when they moved last year’s event earlier in the day, and they decided to build on that this year, starting even earlier.
“Winterfest is a great community event for people of all ages,” she said. “It’s a great time to come out, support local organizations and businesses, get in the holiday spirit and have fun.”

For one-of-a-kind gift items and some delicious food, stop by the annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Peter Catholic Church. The event will be held at the church’s Parish Center, Second and Union streets in Columbia, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will also run on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We have handmade items made by women of the parish, basket (giveaways), and White Reindeer items,” said Claire Storm, event volunteer. “The White Reindeer table contains gently used and new items for purchase.”
Saturday’s festivities will feature the items for sale, and Sunday’s event will include a full-course dinner, served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The dinner menu will include ham, scalloped potatoes, a vegetable, a roll, coffee, tea or water, Storm said. “Desserts made by parishioners are also available for purchase,” she stated.
The dinner is open to the public and will be available for eat-in or takeout.
The bazaar is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women, with assistance from the men of the parish. Proceeds benefit missions of the church.
The bazaar also offers a way for the church members to connect with the community, Storm said, inviting everyone to attend.
“It’s a perfect time to purchase Christmas gifts, enjoy a reasonably priced dinner and socialize with friends and family,” she said.
Cash or checks will be accepted at the bazaar and dinner. Tickets for the dinner may be purchased in advance at the church office or at the door. For more information, search for “St. Peter Catholic Church” on Facebook.
Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.
“Proceeds support the parish activities as well as worldwide initiatives,” Storm remarked. “Funds were recently sent to the diocese of Asheville, N.C., to aid those affected by the recent hurricane and also to aid the poor in Haiti. Locally, we support Off the Streets and Our Lady of the Angels School.”
Joanne White will speak on the topic “Without a Net,” which will focus on trusting in the Lord with all of one’s heart, soul and mind. Joanne is married to Gene and lives in York County, where she is involved at LCBC York. She is a graduate of Manheim Central High School and is retired from Kellogg’s.
During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
Karen Walty, a senior at Donegal High School, was the first-place winner of the 2024-25 Voice of Democracy (VOD) essay contest, sponsored by Mount Joy VFW Post 5752. Karen will soon advance to the next round of judging at District 9.
Karen was presented the award by George Leyh, VOD chair for the post. She also gave a speech at the annual Veterans Day assembly at Donegal High School on Nov. 11. Coming in second place in the essay contest was Gianna Burns, and third place was awarded to Dharma Hain.
Created in 1947, the VOD scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for students in grades nine to 12 that annually provides more than $2.5 million in scholarships. Awards are given for winning essays at the post, district and state levels. The first-place national winner, named after a competition featuring all the first-place state winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American

As they string the beads and color the keychains, they are doing much more than just making crafts.
“There are so many good skills they learn from this,” Ortega said. “They learn to handle the money, work on the budgeting and prepare all the items.”
Participating in the bazaar is the perfect fit for student Cole Hartman, who was hard at work making a SpongeBob SquarePants design. He’s been practicing his favorite school subject in preparation for helping to run the business. “I like to do math,” he said. “It’s fun.”
Ortega’s students will be among hundreds throughout Lancaster County who will offer their homemade items for sale at the bazaar.
“We have well over 300 participants and approximately 40 mini businesses,” said Doreen Unton, coordinator of job training services for the IU13, who noted that a similar event is held in November in Lebanon County. “We set up the Conference and Training Center using the perimeter of the room and three rectangle groups so that customers can walk around easily to see merchandise. … It is usually loud and busy but happy!”
The bazaar began after the IU13 established a grant program to support teachers in setting up classroom mini businesses, she said.
“The primary goal of a mini business is to teach students job skills,
social awareness and work ethics in a practical, class-based setting,” Unton explained. “By managing a classroom business, teachers can provide direct instruction on work responsibilities, specific job skills, production processes, quality standards and employability skills. … Running a mini business offers students valuable insights into business operations and entrepreneurship. Each experience, including facing low sales, becomes a learning opportunity.”
Unton noted that the bazaar is a win-win for both shoppers and students. “As a customer, from the moment you walk into the building on the day of the bazaar, there is an energy and buzz of excitement,” she shared. “Students are smiling and telling you all about the craft they made, and shoppers are happy to browse for treasures. The events have also become a reunion of sort for past students and staff. People are hugging, laughing and engaging with the students. It’s a wonderful atmosphere, and I guarantee that visitors will leave the event with a smile, full heart and lots of goodies!”
For the students and staff, the event represents the culmination of their hard work. “Now they get to set up their display of crafts and sell them to customers,” Unton said.
“They get to practice social skills, sales skills, math and so much more. And they get to do a little shopping
at the other vendors.”
Sales from the mini businesses directly benefit the classroom, with funds used for student incentives, donations to charitable causes or even unique initiatives such as a class sponsorship of an Alaskan Iditarod dog race team.
Proceeds from The Spectrum Studio will be used to fund community-based outings and field trips.
“I’d like them to go to a restaurant, practice ordering their own food and paying for their own food,” Ortega shared. “We want to go bowling or go to the movies. We want to give them opportunities to practice those kinds of skills.”
Unton encourages people to visit the bazaar to pick up one-of-a-kind items and see the students in action. “Ask them what they made and how they made it,” she said. “If you purchase something, allow them to test their math skills and customer service skills. Oftentimes students blossom in this environment when they are outside the classroom and can interact with people. … By attending, you will help reinforce and demonstrate public support for our local area students and make the event impactful and memorable for them and their teachers.”
For more information on the bazaar, visit www.iu13.org and go to “All Events” under the “Events, Workshops & Classes” tab.

Winner from pg 5
university, college or vocational/ technical school.
Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each department’s first-place winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
The VOD program is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ contest criteria and is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a three- to five-minute essay based on an annual theme.
Historically, the theme, which is annually chosen by the VFW
commander-in-chief, is purposely kept broad in scope to allow the participant flexibility in interpretation to encourage originality. Since the VFW is a patriotic organization, the annual theme is always related to patriotism. The theme this year was “Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?”
