Lititz Springs provides perfect setting for Christmas in the Park

Two hundred and sixty-nine years ago, members of the Lititz Moravian Church gifted the 3 acres of land that would become Lititz Springs Park to the citizens of what would become Lititz Borough and Warwick Township. It’s a gift that’s been giving ever since.
So, in keeping with that spirit of giving, it is very fitting that Lititz Springs Park hosts the tradition-laden Christmas in the Park.

“As a park board, we talk about the function and the purpose of the park,” said Kellye Martin, a Lititz Springs Park Board (LSPB) member and the chairperson for Christmas in the Park. “The park is supposed to be used for respite and celebration, and we think (Christmas in the Park) is a perfect use of the park. For me personally, Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. (Christmas in the Park) is a great time to bring the community together.”
LSPB’s 30th presentation of
its annual Christmas in the Park celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The rain date for the hourlong event has been set for Saturday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m.
The event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

The festivities for Christmas in the Park will revolve around the bandshell and will begin with pre-event music from master of ceremonies Bob D’Imperio at
6 p.m. Local historian Cory Van Brookhoven will provide some historical perspective on the event, followed by a Christmas blessing from Michelle Deibler, chaplain at UPMC Lititz, and the lighting of the town Christmas tree by Mayor Tim Snyder. For members of the Lititz Garden Club (LGC), every season is a growing season. For LGC members, gardening isn’t a hobby or a passion; it’s a way of life.
Apparently, there is something very spiritually moving and satisfying about coaxing and nurturing life from a seed planted on the same planet that we all inhabit.
“When you’re gardening, you’re connecting with the earth,” said Sallie Rihn, who’s been LGC’s secretary for 15 years. “It’s creative. I actually read that there is good bacteria in soil, and it aids in our feeling good. It’s like when you’re doing any creative project, and you see something beautiful come from it. It’s fulfilling.”
A social club for gardening enthusiasts of all backgrounds and levels of experience, LGC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. The informal meetings are designed to bring together like-minded individuals with similar interests in an educational setting that stresses a sharing of ideas and experiences.

Chorale plans winter concerts
The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster will presents its winter concert program, “See Amid the Winter’s Snow,” on Sunday, Dec. 1, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street; and Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. All performances will take place at 4 p.m., and a reception will follow the Dec. 8 concert.

Founded in 1994, the Heritage Chorale of
Lancaster is a volunteer, nonprofit group of singers dedicated to excellence in the choral art form. With a repertoire spanning the 16th through 21st centuries and encompassing both a cappella and accompanied works, the chorale has performed at Colonial Williamsburg, Longwood Gardens, the Washington National Cathedral, and churches and historical institutions throughout the Lancaster County area. The chorale presents two programs each yearone in the spring and one at Christmas.

speakers and hands-on activities. During the summer months of June, July and August, tours of private and public gardens sometimes take the place of those regular meetings.
“We are a welcoming group,” said Rihn. “People with all interests in gardening are welcomed and encouraged. We encourage everyone to come together and share in the fun of gardening. The main thrust of our club is educational learning. We’re mainly focusing on native plants.”
LGC is made up of 56 members, mainly from Lititz, but also from Manheim Township, Ephrata, Akron and the city of Lancaster. Many LGC members are older than 60, and many are women.
Most of the LGC members maintain and nurture their own gardens at home, everything from vegetable
gardens to flower gardens, from fruit gardens to spice gardens, from English cottage gardens to shade gardens.
“(The members) clearly have a passion for (gardening),” said Rihn. “We do have some members who don’t garden because they don’t have the space, but they want to learn. We do have a large number of couples. We definitely have people who are knowledgeable, but we consider ourselves enthusiasts because there’s always something new to learn.”
“I can simply get lost in (gardening),” continued Rihn. “I’ve spent up to eight hours in my garden in the spring sometimes. It’s a rebirth. It’s a stress buster. I like nature and wildlife, and it’s fun to see what’s out there. Gardening is a big part of me.”

from an educational nature program of the Lititz Public Library in 2005.
While it focuses on the art and science of gardening, as well as the educational experiences of its members, the club does engage in a few community outreach initiatives.
“I don’t know too many gardeners who have complete success,” said Rihn. “I
think it’s fair to say that it’s hit or miss. But that’s the fun of it. If it doesn’t work, you get to put in something new. If you were able to plant perfect gardens, you wouldn’t have garden clubs. In that way, it’s kind of a support group.”

Program to explore 18th-century rebellion
LancasterHistory has announced the return of the History Happy Hour. The program will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Proof Lancaster, located on the lower level at 30 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the main program will begin at 6 p.m. LancasterHistory’s Stephanie Townrow will lead a discussion about the Whiskey Rebellion.
In August 1794, President George Washington sent Lancaster lawyer Jasper Yeates to western Pennsyl-
vania. Yeates’ mission was to negotiate with a group of angry frontier settlers who were engaged in violent resistance to the new federal tax on whiskey, an event now known as the Whiskey Rebellion. Unable to find a peaceful solution, Yeates encouraged the president to send federal troops to suppress the insurrection, setting a precedent for the federal government’s authority to respond to political resistance with force.

Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center and a doctoral candidate at the University of Delaware. She applies a deep knowledge of early American food history to local history, uncovering ways that Lancaster’s history intersects with major events in the early republic.

“People bring blankets and snuggle up with their families. And we keep it moving,” said Martin. “It’s always a nice small-town feel, with charm, innovation, fun and unexpected things.”
“My favorite part is, if we’re able to get a special appearance by Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, just seeing the joy on everyone’s faces,” she added.
Nearly 1,500 individuals are expected to attend.
“This is one event in the park where I do see a lot of familiar faces,” said Martin. “It’s mostly residents of Lititz and Warwick Township, but we’ll have some people come in from Ephrata, Manheim Township and Lancaster.”
Christmas in the Park is one of 12 events that Lititz Springs Park hosts annually and just one of two staged by LSPB. Traditionally, Christmas in the Park, which was established
in 1994 to celebrate the rededication of the Nativity creche in the downtown’s square, is Lititz Springs’ final event of the calendar year.
“We see the beauty in the space, and we see the uniqueness of its position in the middle of town,” said Martin of Lititz Springs Park. “It’s mostly flat and there are amenities there. It can be a blank slate for events, and it can be personalized in how it’s used. The park board is entrusted to make sure the grounds are preserved and to make it available to the next generation. We have this great park and the question becomes, ‘How can we use it to benefit the town as a whole?’”

Ware Center to host music, art, and more
Activities will take place at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on First Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall, local brass musicians will present TubaChristmas, performing traditional Christmas music arranged for tuba-family instruments such as the tuba, baritone, sousaphone, and euphonium.
The annual concert, which once took place in Ewell Plaza, frequently features multiple generations of tuba players wearing extravagant holiday costumes.
TubaChristmas was first conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, who was born on Christmas Day in 1902.
Today, TubaChristmas concerts have become a holiday tradition across the U.S., honoring the players, teachers, and composers of tuba-family music.
The Lyet Lobby will
be the site of a newly expanded Holiday Maker’s Market featuring the handmade crafts and wares of local artisans. Previously open for limited hours during First Friday, this year, the Markers’ Market will be open for extended hours on Dec. 6 from noon to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In the Regitz Gallery, a reception will celebrate the opening of the exhibit “Stolen Views II - New Lancaster Scenes” by local plein air artists. The exhibit will feature recent artworks created throughout Lancaster County by a local group of artists who meet every week to paint¬†en plein air. The exhibit¬†will be on display until Friday, Jan. 31.

Archpriest to speak at Advent retreat
Transfiguration Orthodox Church, 26 Copperfield Circle, Lititz, will offer its annual Advent retreat on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The speaker will be the Very Rev. Archpriest Andrew Stephen Damick, presenting on the topic of “Salvation and the Unseen World.”
Damick is a priest in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America and chief content officer at Ancient Faith Ministries. His books include “Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy,” “Arise, O God,” and “An Introduction to God,” and his podcasts include “The
Lord of Spirits” and “Amon Sûl - Tolkien and Orthodox Christianity.”
This Advent marks a milestone for Transfiguration Orthodox Church. Damick kicked off the parish opening in 2015, and now, nearly a decade later, he will return to lead the retreat in the newly expanded and renovated sanctuary. The church, which recently completed a major expansion project, now features an extended worship space and fellowship area, located within the Warwick Center. To honor this milestone and give back to the wider community, attendees are invited to bring nonperish-
able canned or boxed food items for donation to the Lititz Warwick Community Chest.
The retreat aims to offer an opportunity to prepare for the Christmas season, creating space for spiritual reflection, learning, and a deeper understanding of salvation. All are welcome to attend, and no prior experience or affiliation with the Orthodox Church is necessary.

Church to dedicate new sanctuary
On the weekend after Thanksgiving, the congregation of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Lititz will dedicate its newly renovated sanctuary.¬†After the church’s founding in 1904, the congregation began worshipping in rented rooms in Lancaster until the completion of its first church building, located at Plum and Clay streets, in 1906.¬†As membership grew, the decision was made to move to Lititz, and the current facility was completed in 1993.¬†The original plan was to utilize a multipurpose room for worship and add a permanent sanctuary at some point in the future.¬†That plan never materialized, so the decision was made in 2023 to refinish the multipurpose room as a permanent sanctuary and complete needed renovations of the building.
The new sanctuary has been turned 90 degrees on its original footprint to face east, with the arrangement of the organ, pews, baptismal font and altar designed to guide the eye toward the cross suspended above the altar. The original brass cross is now fitted into a custom-made wooden frame that better fits the space.
Many local contractors, architects, designers, and craftsmen contributed to this project, managed by Arthur Funk & Sons Inc. of Lebanon.¬†New HVAC systems were installed by Clark Inc., wooden pews were crafted by Miller Church Interiors of New Holland, kneeler cushions were fabricated by Stump’s Upholstery Design, and the pipe organ was refurbished by Brunner & Associates, to name a few.

congregation since October 2019, and the English District bishop, the Rev. Jeffrey Miskus, will lead a service of dedication on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. An additional service and celebration will take place on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Cavod to present “The Unplugged Christmas Carol”
When Grace Mae Bell had the idea to “merge a classic story with contemporary issues,” she had a few goals in mind. “I wanted to combine the modern-day reality of our tech-driven lives with Dickens’ timeless Christmas tale,” said Bell, who has always loved “A Christmas Carol.” “I wanted to highlight the importance of reconnecting with our loved ones and the true meaning of Christmas through the powerful medium of dance.”
Bell’s vision will come to life at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New
Holland, with the presentation of “The Unplugged Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6; 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7; and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. The show features Aaliyah Lapp dancing the role of Eva. The Ghost of Christmas Past will be played by Naomi Grace Byers. The Ghost of Christmas Present will be played by Hannah Stoltzfoos, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come will be danced by Isaac Baloche. Meghan Miller will play Carolyn, a character whose role is similar to that of Bob Cratchit in “A Christmas Carol.” In the 7 p.m. show on Dec. 7, the lead role of Eva will be danced by understudy Araunah Boll. To modernize the story, Bell has placed Eva in a contemporary setting, where she is a corporate leader living her life at the whims of her phone. On Christmas Eve, Eva is invited to church, but chooses to focus on her work. Exhausted, she falls asleep at her desk and dreams of the three Christmas Spirits who guide her on a journey of transformation, where she must face the emptiness of her tech-driven life.
Although Bell has directed a number of productions, this is the first
time she will oversee a show she wrote herself. To give dancers of all genres a chance to participate, Bell has incorporated a number of dance styles, including contemporary, ballet, lyrical, and tap. The story is told in dance, with the only dialogue provided by a narrator.
Bell’s cast of 46 features mostly teenagers, but ages range from 8 to 20. The two acts of the show include multiple scenes, with 13 dances per act. “One of the biggest challenges was seamlessly integrating the various dance genres while staying true to the story line,” said Bell, who added, “Opportunities for growth and creativity have ultimately made the

production stronger.” She pointed out that two big ensembles involve younger children. One is an emoji number, where dancers pop out of devices as emojis. “The emoji number is fun,” said Bell, adding that there are a few dances in the show that offer comedic relief in what is an intense story.
Bell’s cast members have been rehearsing on weekends since September. Over the weekend of Nov. 8, 9, and 10, the dancers experienced a breakthrough involving a particularly difficult dance sequence. “One of my favorite moments is when we have a challenging dance number,” said Bell, who pointed out that when cast members work together as a supportive team, they are likely to overcome the challenge. “(Those times are)
rewarding to the cast and myself and a testament to their hard work and dedication,” she said. “That’s been fun to see the growth in the students.”
Bell hopes audiences will enjoy the combination of the holiday favorite danced in a modern setting and relate it to their own lives. “It’s a unique blend ... an experience that goes beyond mere entertainment to offer a meaningful reflection on the importance of connection in today’s digital age,” stated Bell. “The dynamic dance performance combined with the powerful narrative makes a captivating and heartwarming show that I hope will resonate deeply with today’s audiences because it reflects the challenges many people face in our tech-centric world.”
Exploring the world of pincushions
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will host an event focusing on Amish and Mennonite pincushions on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. at its Collections Feature program.

expression and a way to channel creativity into the domestic sphere. The pincushions in the Mennonite Life collection are colorful, detailed, elaborately patterned works of art. The Collections Feature will explore the rich history and cultural significance of the craft.

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction announces totals
The 47th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction, held at the Lebanon Valley Expo on Sept. 27 and 28, raised a total of $388,829.
Notable sales for individual auctions were highest quilt, double wedding ring star, $1,450; wooden barn set from the Marty Witman estate, $1,300; handmade dollhouse from the Marty Witman estate, $850; 1840 seated Liberty half dollar, $500; 1902 Liberty gold coin, $920; and highest themed basket, “Family That Plays Together,” $675.
The auction, held in cooperation with Atlantic Northeast and Southern District of the Church of the Brethren, which began in 1977, has raised more than $19 million for disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the United States and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support disaster relief trips throughout the year.
Next year’s auction is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27, 2025.

Students and professionals to present “The Nutcracker”
Seventy-four students from Lancaster County and beyond will join professional dancers from around the world on stage in five performances of “The Nutcracker” ballet from Friday to Sunday, Dec. 6 to 8. Viktor Yeliohin directs the production, which will be presented at Lancaster Mennonite High School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. A special performance for local students will take place in the morning on Dec. 6, and the production will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Two shows will follow on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 and 6 p.m., with a final matinee on Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
Tchaikovsky’s “Nut -
cracker” dates back to 1892 when it was performed for the first time the week before Christmas in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet then traveled to England in 1934 followed by the United States in 1944; 2024 marks 80 years since the production came to the U.S. In addition, Yeliohin is celebrating his 30th year directing the show in Lancaster. His students have been preparing for the performances for more than seven months.
“The Nutcracker” follows Clara’s magical Christmas journey through the Land of Sweets and beyond. This year, Gianna Fasano from Lampeter-Strasburg School District and Maggie O’Connor from the School District of Lancaster will star as Clara. This year marks Fasano’s 11th year and O’Connor’s ninth year in the show.
